You decide to read up a bit on Estovakia as you head for the briefing. You stop by the admin building, where you pick up a combat primer giving you a basic summary of Estovakia's history.

Apparently, Estovakia was one of the nations that got hit very hard when the Ulysses asteroid hit the planet. Large chunks of the asteroid pretty much demolished much of the country. In the aftermath, the government essentially collapsed, leading to multiple factions rising up to try and fill the power vacuum. Eventually, a group called the Generals assumed power and put the entire country under military rule. They enjoyed wide support from the army, and the transition of power was swift and brutal. Afterwards, the Generals looked to prop up their still ailing economy by invading their richer neighbor, Emmeria, starting the Anean Continental War. However, that was a whole different story.

What mattered was that despite early success, the Estovakians lost the war badly. The army (or what was left of it) subsequently overthrew the Generals and handed power back to the people. Now the new government was busy trying to rebuild the country, while large chunks of the country either broke off to form their own nations or otherwise stubbornly refused to recognize the new government. The most problematic were forces still loyal to the Generals that occupied much of northern Estovakia, as well as the eastern islands off the coast.

Also, it appeared that Yuktobania was funding this expedition. Apparently the Yukes had some fairly close ties with Estovakia before the Generals took over. You didn't really appreciate doing the Yukes' dirty work, but you were ultimately just a middleman.

"All right, now that we're all here." Samantha shoots one last glare at Lara before turning to the projector screen. "We will be beginning the briefing for today's operation."

Samantha hits a remote, bringing up a map of a mountainous region.

"This is one of Estovakia's northern provinces." Samantha explains. "There's a lot of rare mineral and ore resources in these mountains, which make a big chunk of Estovakia's imports. Unfortunately, they're controlled by General loyalists. Not only are they using the money from these mines to fund their rebellion, but these facilities are absolutely needed if Estovakia is going to recover economically."

"So how are we going to attack?" One pilot raises his hand. "That looks like rough terrain."

No, my problem is and always has been the B model. If the MUHREENS are that in need of their own aircraft, then it would have been just as easy to design and build a dedicated V/STOL aircraft than it is to try and squeeze that capability into a design for the other two services, ESPECIALLY one that you're planning to export to countries that may not even need V/STOL capability.

Your flight is next to take off, and you all begin heading north to the area of operation.

"This is Loki. I'll be your mission control and AWACs support for this mission." You hear Loki's familiar voice. "The paratroopers are already on route. Delta Flight, move in and sweep for any enemy fighters or AA assets. The AO is an internationally recognized no-fly zone, so you are free to engage any unidentified aircraft."

You can't shake the feeling that Lara sounded WAY too happy about that.

Well, that was nice and all, but that felt very reactionary. You check your map again. The immediate AO was too rugged for airfields, so any potential air assets would have to come from further north. Sure, you'd be farther away from Lilian and Amy, but you'd be in a position to intercept enemies long before they could be a threat to them.

You then see a pair of F-111s screech over the forest, dropping cluster bombs into the forest north of the landing zones, no doubt to clear out any enemy infantry hiding in there.

"Hey, Nugget, can you check something for me?" Lara asks. "I'm getting some intermittent contacts northeast of our position, but I can't make it out. Can you confirm?"

"Sure thing." You say as you fire up your radar.

With a frame of reference, you bank your fighter and crane your head in the indicated direction. Sure enough, you can see about four to six shapes in the mountain mist. Those had to be pretty brave bastards, flying low to the ground like that.

if I had to guess the MIGs are either a probing attack to see what we have at our despolsel or the felt that since most of our aircraft (aka delta) are mainly meant for air to ground strikes they could throw some cheap planes at them and cripple them enough that they wouldn't be able to brake there ground defenses letting them stop our ground troops.
