/tg/ - Traditional Games

Hey guys, I'm writing a story about Rapist Gerbils, and one of them is named /tg/.

In fact, all the Rapist Gerbils are named after different 4chan boards. And luckily for you, that means you not only get to contribute your own fanfiction of my story, but you're allowed to draw art of these Rapist Gerbils! Lucky you!

To help convince you to draw art and write about these Rapist Gerbils named after the different boards, I'm going to bump this thread for the next few weeks, so you get to watch the amusing antics of Rapist Gerbil /tg/ develop and evolve!

So, first order of business is: Which of the boards should /tg/ rape first? Or is he/she one of the gerbils that end up getting raped?

It's up to you to decide! What fun!
>>
Do they have to be rapists? Why not just cute gerbils that like to do cute things and just happen to be named after the boards?

Sort of like hamtaro, except 4chan.

4chantaro.

Young adult books (and films) are part of a relatively new genre and they speak to the young adult inside us all, the part whose identity is yet unformed, full of rage and fear and longing. They’re not great literature, which is fine, because they’re not designed to be. The new teen dystopias are profoundly romantic, full of doomed crushes and broody heroes in tight athletic suits, but they resist portraying love as the answer to the heroine’s problems. Kissing is fantastic but what Katniss Everdeen, Tris Prior and Paige Mahoney need is someone with pretty eyes to help them bring down the government. Don’t we all?"

There are clear reasons why this sort of story is appealing. The complete collapse of the narrative of what a secure future looks like for today’s young people and the grim messages about what the teenagers who grew up with Occupy and austerity have to look forward to as the planet heats up, the job market stutters, pension provision is depleted and the police get meaner have fostered a generational anxiety about how to cope with overmighty state power. These stories function both as manifesto and pressure release valve. They are escapist only in that they allow for the possibility of resistance. The message of The Hunger Games, like the message of The Bone Season, could not be starker: however much they make you fight one another, you must always “remember who the real enemy is”.

Also, what do we think the names and the characterizations of the others be?

As obvious as it is, I like the Pseudodragon being smug and aloof, partially because of the "Catlike" aspects of them.

I picture the Earth Elemental as naive and simple, but utterly honest. Looks up to TeeGee a lot.

TeeGee is firey and full of vim and a lust for adventure.

The slime is shy and a little cowardly, but fiercely protective of his friends. He just wants to live a quiet life, but keeps getting dragged into crazy adventures by TeeGee and the gang.

Teegee falling flat on her face, while dice pack only shows two 1s.
Teegee with her shovel thrust in the air, or in some other kind of heroric weapon pose.
Teegee burying a copy of FATAL in the ground.

That's stupid on a level I can't even begin to express.

This is way too cool to be any way associated with the "4chan House" thing, and more importantly calling a gerbil a dire rat still doesn't make any sense for the tan to own one.

In any case, /tg/ the gerbil is way too free-spirited and awesome to be anything other than a feral gerbil.
>>
>>35768646
It's also the Board-tan people trying to steal actually good ideas, and then shitting upon them by bringing them into their diseased universe.

Teegee loses almost all of what makes her cool if she has to be part of the stupid Winter Ball bullshit.

Mostly because it's trying to force a crew of monsters alongside a gerbil, which just doesn't make any sense.

I think gerbil and more gerbils is better than this weird attempt to make teegee a board-tan's pet. It's probably best to keep these things as separate as possible anyway.

The thing that makes a dire rat "dire" is its size (and ferocity).

Teegee isn't anything like a dire rat, since what separates Teegee from common gerbils is a degree of intelligence and a shovel.

I know you're really trying to push this idea, but it's just not really clicking. It's really an odd-man out scenario, which is weird considering that the odd-man is supposed to be the central figure.
>>
>>35769606
>cat sized

That's considerably smaller than a dire rat, which is dog sized. If you really wanted teegee to be a dire rat, then it would have to be the largest of the crew.

> If you really wanted teegee to be a dire rat, then it would have to be the largest of the crew.

Eh, if it's not clicking it's not clicking, but I'll support it with one last post.

I think to say that all that separates Teegee from a common gerbil is intelligence and a shovel isn't quite right. Most gerbils I've ever known don't really do too much in the way of adventuring. As far as ferocity goes, it's there in her personality.

>>35769700
I guess I'm picturing different "Small Dogs" than you. Cause a Dire Rat is described as the size of a small dog, and even with the category "Small" dogs can range from Chiwawas to Shi Tzus to Beagles. I was imagining it as a smallish Shi Tzu, which puts it about on par with a house cat in terms of size.

If you're still not feeling it though, her just being the Odd man out as a normal gerbil in the crew could work fine.

> Cause a Dire Rat is described as the size of a small dog

Basically, a dire rat's size category is small. That's where halflings, gnomes, and goblins fall into, and a "small dog" referes to pitbulls and collies rather than "large dogs" like mastiffs, and definitely not those "toy dogs" or "purse dogs" which are basically just rats.

A cat's category is "tiny," while an actual gerbi is "Diminutive," which is another shade smaller.

We could still have the microcosm world akin to The Borrowers, but have a mansion that's NOT associated with Board-Tans.

They could be free-roaming beings in the wild that stay away from a world dominated by larger species, such as The Secret of Nymh.

I don't think you understand what that means.

Actually, I think you do, but you just want to keep lying in order to create a false sense of legitimacy to your character, when you really need to keep in mind your own "none of this is canon" disclaimer.

I don't even understand how you think anyone is stupid enough to listen to your bogus claims that any of your board-tan stuff is native to any of the boards are widely recognized or accepted.

Just because you guys post this shit here doesn't mean it belongs here, nor is it particularly welcome.

>>
>>35770723
I think it really depends on where we want to go with these stories. Like you said, Redwall doesn't really utilize the sizes, but the other two are driven by the human influence on their world. I love it to death, but is that where we want to go with her?
>>

>things are capable of having legitimacy on 4chan; the criteria for which I am the sole keeper of
>if I don't like it, it's unwelcome on the board as a whole

I almost want to start armchair psychoanalyzing you. I'm getting both a 'spoiled only child' and 'spoiled youngest of many siblings' vibe.
>>
>>35770812
It's been YEARS since I'd seen it. I'd forgotten that it was an acronym.

Capcha: animsocide instructor. Spooky.
>>
>>35770823
I prefer the NIMH approach mostly because I think it makes for the most interesting world to explore. These tiny creatures banding together to deal with a world that is bigger and more dangerous than any of them could face on their own.

If we're not setting them in the 4chanhouse, then it gets even more intimidating because then it needs to be in the DnD Prime Material Plane with the Gel Cube and other monsters being present. And that place is scary as shit.
>>
>>35770897
In that case, how should they view the typical races? Does the scale make them out to be gods to them, due to their masterh of magic and technology, or are they more meta-aware of their place in the PmP?
>>
>>35770897
Why not use Planescape, but go full Kingdom Hearts with it?

From Sigil, you can also reach Cadia, CATastrophe, 2100s Seattle, Golden Sky Stories, hell, even Mouse Guard itself.

And if anybody wants to link it to the boardtans' mansion, that's why things bigger than should be possible sometimes enter and exit the doghouse in the back.
>>
>>35770960
Oh, I like this one, but it pushes her away from OC and towards insert fan fiction.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd prefer to write her in her own setting at first.
>>
>>35770960
Eh that just makes it feel generic. They should be from somewhere, and based on group composition, Prime Material and 4chanmansion are the only places that really make sense.
>>
What's the best wsy to post a story here? Should I copy/paste from a text file or post the text as s picture, or what? I've never put stuff up on 4chan before.

>>
>>35771112

>>
>>35771187
Sounds like a plan.

So let's fill in the group.

Whenever I make new characters, I give them a rough framework consisting of the following:

>3 quirks (mental or physical)
These are things that set them apart from others of their kind at a glance. In her case, yge scar is likely one of these, but she may also have odd habits or other distinguishing traits.

>2 motivations
What is it that this character hopes to achieve through her actions? Most, if not all of her actions should be oriented towards filling these goals in some way, be they vengeance, a desire for wealth and fame, or even petty things like "I want to see mountains".

>1 significant back story event.
This is why the character is a PC instead if an NPC. this life-changing event is often unpleasent for the character (father murdered, village burned down, got kidnapped, etc) and often spawns one or more of their motivations. (Avenge father's murder, acquire wealth to rebuild villiage, escape to get back home, etc)

So let's assign Teegee's character framework

One of the movitations should just be ADVENTURE! Or something to the effect of "live a good story." And she never quite gets the perfect story (in her opinion), so she keeps trying.

One of the quirks could be extravagent heroic posing, or older english (thou thine thee etc) use when things are getting serious and she's deep into story mode.

Back story event doesn't have to be traumatic. It could be something light hearted. Through bearing witness to so many of the games between /tg/, /m/, /co/, et. al. she had an inspiration moment and decides she is going to chase down the magic of tales first hand.
>>
>>35771382
I think a small cottage on the outer limits of a small town or village would a good home base. with a nearby field and forest for adventuring. A village would be large enough for the tiny group to explore without it becoming a huge mess that a city would bring. Though there could be a nearby City that could lead to the shock and awe of a settlement of that scale for them.
The owner of the cottage and there caretaker could be an elderly gentleman also possibly a child if wanted.

this shade of green good?

The problem with a pseudodragon is that it kind of outshines a hamster by a considerable degree.

Sort of like Drizzt and Wulfgar.
Wulfgar was supposed to be the main character of the Icewind Dale series, being the Human Barbarian champion, but Drizzt ended up stealing the spotlight by being an exiled drow.

I think that if Teegee knows a pseudodragon, that's alright, but as far as companions go, more common animals would be better.

A cat familiar, for instance, practically writes itself if the proud animal has to ask a hamster for assistance.
>>
>>35775774
we could just change 'pseudodragon' to 'lizard' and it would be the same thing, essentially, just different words
>>
>>35775743
Perfect.

>>35775804
>Lizard that is convinced that he is in fact a Pseudodragon.
>>
>>35775718
That's one of those things that makes someone less cool, not more.

Are you one of those guys who does that, and thinks they're cool by doing it? Be honest.

Because that's almost on the level of wearing a fedora and genuinely thinking you look cool when it's not 1920.
>>
>>35775862
yfw fedoras will pass from common fashion but still be in the public consciousness enough to be worn unironically in time for 2020.
>>
>>35775862
It's not that it makes her cool. It's that she THINKS it makes her cool.

She just wants to be the hero of a grand adventure and isn't necessarily sure how to do that. So she emulates metafictional characters to be a hero.
>>
>>35775919
as an idea this is kinda cool, but I'm not sure it wouldn't go over most people's heads and just end up looking dumb...

Unless maybe she gets called out on it and has to explain
>>
>>35775822
maybe the lizard is a bearded dragon and he thinks that means he's a real dragon.
>>35775862
it could be the one thing she does that all the others cringe silently at but wont say anything to her because they don't want to crush her spirit by saying it makes her look retarded.
>>
>>35775944
It's times like this I wish I could draw.
>>
>>35775822
>Lizard thinks it's a pseudo dragon
That's hilarious and adorable. Can I get a seconded on that?

>>35775862
It wasn't my suggestion. I'm just the guy who's trying to take everyone's ideas and hone them into a story. Whether it's "cool" or not is irrelevant, this is the character that is being created by the will of the thread, and if they want an accent I will write it as such. If they do not, then I will not. It's as simple as that.

That being said, we should reach a consensus on having or not having drama-induced speech habits.
>>
>>35775919
It's quickly turning down into lamer and lamer territory.

Rather than being a bright-eyed and naturally adventurous individual, you're turning her into some sort of knock-off imitator that's more irritating than endearing.

I mean, have you ever seen kids play before? They do the "Thou art bla bla bla" for about ten seconds before they lapse back into regular speech, and the notion that someone would, in times of duress, subconsciously start talking like some ponce from the worst kind of novel is as nonsensical as it is annoying.

Teegee is already cool. She's got a wicked scar. A shovel. Some lucky dice and mischievous grin.

THAT'S what should be inspiring her character, not your backwards notion that people who try to be cool are cool.
>>
>>35775969
>That being said, we should reach a consensus

This isn't some silly board-tan business. Go away and let this thing happen naturally instead of trying to force it just so you can make it in time for your ball.
>>
>>35776053
Hey guy. It's a fucking hamster.
>>
>>35776081
I'm just trying to figure out what the thread thinks this character should be like so I can write about her. I couldn't give fewer fucks about the board-tan ball thing.
>>
>>35776053
It's not a subconscious thing though. It's a completely purposeful thing.

You're right, the subconscious idea was kind of dumb, but it's an intentional act on her part to make a moment feel more "EPIC" in her mind.

When shit goes down, she's not gonna be Theeing and Thouing. But right as she steps through the door that Urf just battered down brandishing her mighty shovel? You can be that in that moment she's gonna throw around some faux flowery prose.
>>
>>35776116
You should make that decision yourself.
Figure out what you personally think is cool, and don't worry about what's canon or what's not.

If you write it, and something your wrote about seems cool, it'll carry on.

So make your own decision. Weigh what people are saying, but you should either have enough sense and taste to make your own decision, or you shouldn't be writing in the first place.
>>
>>35776081
>let this thing happen naturally instead of trying to force it
>while trying to force away the association with board-tan stuff that happened naturally

You forcing harder than anyone.
>>
>>35776116
If you write a personality well, that should be her personality. But I'd just go with a cheerful hamtaro style thing. No point getting too out there since it's gonna be a relatively small setting probably, and not a lot of characters for her to need to contrast to.
>>
>>35776053
>have you ever seen kids play before? They do the "Thou art bla bla bla" for about ten seconds before they lapse back into regular speech
I think that is what she does.
She does it to feel like an epic adventurer and only does it when she pictures herself filling that role
>>
>>35776185
>>35776235
This. When it comes to this kind of thing, the final arbitrators aren't the the posters in the thread, they're the artists and writers who make OC.
>>
>>35776165
>>35776249

This whole "she wants to be an epic adventurer!" is giving me all sorts of bad vibes.

I feel it should be a more Hamtoro type thing, just critters having fun and going on adventurers because they like exploring and trying new things, not some weird meta-force that demands that she must adventure.
>>
>>35776402
She just likes old stories of quests and adventures and glory. All she wants is to have awesome stories where she is the hero
>>
>>35776432
>>35776402
It's almost like Finn in Adventure Time before the show started going downhill.

She does actually go on adventures, she just also Idolizes the idea of being a hero. It's just a piece of characterization, not a driving force of any plot.

Gerbil Rapists 2: Hamtoro Adventures
>>
>>35776432
I'd prefer if she used the parts of those awesome stories that are ACTUALLY awesome, rather than the superficial aspects.

Rather than talking dumb sometimes, she could solve problems while referencing past heros she's emulating, like hanging onto the underside of some larger animal to escape detection (like Odysseus did in the Cyclop's cave) or using the flat of her shovel like a mirror to observe around a corner (like Perseus used his shield to observe Medusa)

I also find her attempting outlandish plans based on past heroes and having them fail spectacularly is definitely a much more interesting trait than talking dumb on occasion.
>>
>>35776611
why not both?
>>
So the thread is at the bump limit. Do we want to keep going with a new thread when it dies or will this just die with it?
>>
>>35776657
Because imitating the speech is the superficial aspect. The fedora of the gangster, if you will.

And, having a tacky habit like talking in a grandiose manner doesn't really fit the kind of rough-and-tumble kind of character that a hamster with a scar and a shovel is.

If anything, she would hit people who tried to talk to her in such a way with a shovel, and then reprimand them for making light of her heroes.
>>
>>35776705
This thread isn't even close to dead yet. Calm your tits.
>>
>>35776771
>Page 8 and not bumping.
Ok.
I mean I know we've got time left, I was just wondering.
>>
>>35776749
I figured with the Hamtoro design that it had an air of childishness to it. This isn't quite mouseguard
>>
>>35776808
That's why hitting someone with the shovel only makes a cute squeek noise but doesn't do any damage.
>>
>>35776928
It could KO them, but hitting something with a blunt object and causing unconsciousness is more innocent then hacking at their abdomin and spilling their guts out.

Familiars.

>all the cool kids have the most exotic familiars they could get
>then there's this dork with a gerbil
>the gerbil is cooler than him

this has serious potential

Not bad, but the large problem is what usually happens with familiars. They get overshadowed by their masters to the point where they get forgotten.

Even if the gerbil initially has more presence than her master, it would be hard to keep that as the status quo, but more importantly all the other masters would be far more important than their familiars, to such a degree that the identity of the familiars master would be more important than the species of said familiar.

It has some potential, but it's a little bit out there.
>>
>>35775919
I'd say that even in that case, a slipping accent doesn't really work. Either she always speaks like that, which could be fun but it's a bit overdone (think Marvel Thor), or she doesn't. Having her suddenly change speech patterns from time to time would be confusing for little gain, and/or need a lot of lampshade hanging.
>>
someone has to archive this
>>
>>35777477
The way to make the Masters not Outshine the Familiars is to not include them in the story. It's a Wizard School. Most of the time, they're just out at class. The Familiars all meet up when the Masters aren't there and go on adventures that way. The Masters never learn of the adventures and thus never get a chance to make them obsolete.

It also gives a great backdrop for tiny sized adventures to happen in. Wizard Schools are dangerous as fuck but simultaneously super friendly settings.
>>
>>35777477
As I see it, the masters need not even be a part of this, except for a bit of introduction (what I wrote in the other post). I haven't watched a lot of Hamtaro, but I seem to recall it worked like this... Humans were there, you saw them from time to time, but the show was all about hamsters fooling around. This would be the same in a more fantasy setting.
>>
>>35777719
>>
>>35777629
>>35777636
It works with ordinary humans, but wizards are wizards. Downplaying them and ignoring them raises the question of why making the critters familiars to begin with?

Also, in Hamtaro, Hamtaro's owner plays a fairly large part in the stories, as do some of the other owners. Being owned by someone makes them a fairly big part of your life, and the major reason why they actually get to have awesome adventures is because of the feral hamster Boss who maintains the clubhouse they all escape to.

Like I said before, it's not a terrible idea, and I'm just raising my concerns with it.

Personally, I don't like the idea of making them pets/familiars unless it's a necessity, and I don't really think it's a necessity like in the case of Hamtaro (you can't have a story about thirteen feral hamster in modern day Japan without people asking why they're not somebody's pets).
