Stage 39: Heart is where the Home is.

It takes a lot to make you sick to your stomach, and right now, you're pretty far past sick to your stomach and somewhere on the border of 'wrecking Japan is okay if you catch the snake bitch in it.' Shoko and Genso are both kneeling before you, heads down as you stand before them, your tail lashing lazily. You can see the ephemeral power of their destructiveness in dim golden light around each of them, but they're no threat to you. In fact, if anything they're going to help you very well.

Shoko is finishing her tale, and her sweet, little-girl voice helps you relax. “Since then I have been maintaining the fucking palace under the fucking ocean in its small heaven. My grandfather has been guarding it damn carefully, and Yuuhi has been keeping the correspondence between the damn palace and the fucking kamuy and the damn kami open. She mostly telly them to fuck off, but it keeps the presence of Horobi right in their fucking face.” This is more like how oni talk, and it makes you wonder about Yui again.

“Well, I'm not Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado yet. And I won't be until I'm ready. But I will be one day, and when I am, I'll ask if you wish to continue in my service. Right now, I don't really think I have any authority....”

The powerful oni makes a sharp cutting gesture with his hand. “Silence, fool. You are the heir to Horobi's mikoto, so you are Horobi.” his voice is a basso-profondo growl that would make people outside the barrier think a bear or a tiger was somewhere nearby. “You will fucking give us our commands.” Which isn't really an order, it's how oni's ask for things.

[] Return to the palace and await my return.
[] What others of the staff are left?
[] I'll need to consult my spiritualists, before I can make any decisions.
[] How did you travel from there to here Shoko-san?
[] Avoid groups of trees more than sixteen in number – they have a tracking spell on them.

[+] Are there any other places of Horobi's you know of that are safe?

“Well, despite that, I'm still going to have to consult my own priestess and seer before I do anything that might piss of a kami or a kamuy, or break some kind of protocol I don't know about.” Genso-san looks mollified by your statement, and the fact that you're not bothered nor intimidated by him seems to sit pretty well with the great big Stone oni. “And just so you two know, groups of trees in this prefecture numbering sixteen or more have a spell that alerts people to the presence of me and mine. I don't know whether you count or not, but you're going to want to avoid....”

Shoko's head is down and and Genso is looking embarrassed, running a massive hand over his thin hair. “Well, it may not have caught onto you, so just avoid such places from now on. It wasn't crafted by anyone too powerful, but it is being used by one of Kinashut Kamuy's servants.” No need to confuse the issue by explaining Oba-san to them.

“I'll take care of the fucking trees, all right,” claims Shoko-san angrily.

“I have a sorceress taking care of the problem already. We don't want the spell ruined, we want it to work for us instead. I'm playing dangerous games and I have my family to take care of.” Shoko's gentle blue eye widens and Genso looks up, surprised. “Inari is with me, yes, so don't attract attention or cause trouble!” You slam your tail to the ground and the entire area within the barrier rumbles in reaction, alarming both of them.

Not to mention yourself. That wasn't even the power of Horobi, that was you waking the water that lies beneath the earth! One more weapon in your arsenal...
>>
>>35687501
Yes, we need some nookie power.
>>
>>35687551
“More importantly, how many of those who served Horobi are going to be willing to serve me now?”

Genso speaks up, and while the barrier removes language issues, it doesn't really help an oni sound any less like an oni. “The youkai ran, the fucking worthless shits, and most of the bastard oni sought service elsewhere or turned back to banditry or hid in the fucking mountains.”

Shoko sighs softly. “There's mostly a few youkai-children and oni-children and a few dragonnes and dragonettes. The bastard pure-blooded ones fucking ran off, without the power of a Kamuy to fucking leech off of.” She looks down and closes her eyes, folding her gloved hands together. “Fujitsu-san tried her very best to stay, though....she turned into a specter of herself and faded away. She was the only youkai who stayed.”

That doesn't necessarily mean she died though – youkai are hard to destroy. And you might have a way to bring her back, though it's undoubtedly risky. “What kind of youkai was she?”

The strange green skinned oni-girl looks up at you. “She was a mokumokuren.” A shoji-screen spirit, one that had been torn and had many eyes painted on it. Not especially strong to begin with, but the perfect secretary. Nodding you consider the last thing.

“How did you get from heaven to here, Shoko-can? You're a cloud rider, but that doesn't work in the ocean does it?”
>>
>>35687565
“It does for me, Ryukusa-sama. I'm a a Water oni-child, and I am expected to travel wherever I must.” That's useful – she could definitely be helpful, in a number of ways. At the same time, her and her father – oh, “grandfather” – being here leaves the temple or palace weaker by far. Though there is the shinobi Yuuhi, the fox youkai-child. On the other hand, she could be of use here too. Shoko seems to know her way around cities at least.

“Are there any other lands or holdings that are safe and protected? I have a promise to keep to some cat youkai.”

“There is a temple that now belongs to Ryujin-Oh, which hides a shrine to Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, on Hokkaido, in Oto Jinja in Setana. It is a well kept secret.” The shrine that Kiku-chan prayed to and connected to Horobi – to you – with. Sacrificing her own blood to you. You wonder if what was in that pit in Yomi received that offering....and promptly decide that you really have no business knowing that.

[X] Have her take Genso home and bring Yuuhi here – you need all the intel.

[+] Any tips on killing an actual Void Oni?

It doesn't take you long to reach a decision. Genso is powerful, but the only spirits you'll be dealing with are beyond even him or entitled to a duel with you alone. Sadly, as loyal and as powerful as he is, you need him back at that palace to protect the others still there. Except for one. “I may not really have the right to give you orders....so I am going to ask you. Genso-sama, I want you to return to the palace and protect the spirit-children there. I have very little doubt that Kinashut Kamuy may return and occupy or attempt to kill everyone when she realizes what I've become.”

He bows his head deeply, closing his eyes in respect for you, and it's a strangely familiar, a ~natural~ feeling.

You turn on the muscular oni-woman with the voice of a J-pop idol. “Shoko-san, I want you to take Genso home, but then come back. Here is the address – here is the key to the gate.” You had her your key, and resign yourself to braving the fierce Wan-wan and asking the landlord to make you another. Facing her again isn't going to be fun, but it's your own damn fault for not picking up more last time. “And I want you to bring your pretty fox-tail with you.”

Her cheeks darken to a rather lovely shade of sea green. “My what?”

“Yuuhi-san. I want you to being Yuuhi-san to me, because she will know everything I need to know to be able to save lives. Not just my families, but those at the palace.” Oba-san would never have left it alone like that, unless she was absolutely certain she had Horobi under her absolute control. With things moving as they are, it's only a matter of time....she won't leave it alone, even if she's....wait.
>>
>>35688134
If Oba-san IS Kinashut Kamuy, then she HAS to be possessing a human host. And as long as that's the case, she's limited in what she can manage in the spirit world. That doesn't make her any less dangerous, with the entirety of Clan Ryo to call on, not to mention the ties to Hojo Group and Clan Kaga, but it does mean you can worry less about the palace and the denizens there.

Which is strange, because realistically they're part of an entirely different life, a different....oh fuck it, who are you kidding. They're your people too, even if they don't know you. “Oh, how good are you at herding cats?”

The powerfully built oni snorts. “I ran an entire fucking household made up of people picked by that fuckoff Amako Zen, who seems a fucking whole lot like you. How good do you think I am, retard?”

You nods solemnly. “That sounds good, I think unleashing a mass of cat youkai on Hokkaido might be fun, especially if I can rebuild a shrine and make it a safe haven for them.” Genso is staring at you in shock, and Shoko giggles like a schoolgirl. Literally, she sounds about twelve.

“Genso-san, it may be unpleasant, but I must ask....how does someone like me fight a Void Oni, a true oni serving a kami, and win?” Shoko's sharp intake of breath tells you that she's worried more than her expression would if you were looking at her.

“Bleed the fucker dry. Get him kamidamned drunk and fucking chop his head off. Piss him off so bad he explodes.” His thunderous voice rolls through the Barrier like thunder, or the echoes of an earthquake.

You blink. “That actually happens?”
>>
>>35688151
“Against the fucking idiots, yes.” Damn, doesn't sound like that's an option. The first one though....yes, you can do that. You can do that well. “Turn his magic back on him and make it eat that motherfucker alive.” Also unlikely. But not impossible, depending on what magic he uses.

“All right. Thank you for your help. I will do my best to take care of everything and not bring trouble to your....no, our people.” You take a deep breath and let it out slowly; not a sigh, just accepting this burden.

Then Shoko is rising, as is Genso, who is still stooped over and bearlike, hiding his true statue. “At once, Ryukusa-sama! You can fucking rely on me, babe!” You bow to them both, and conjure another thick mist. As the Barrier fades, there's a moment where it can be peeked into, and that could be very bad. Shoko collapses her Barrier, and uses the fog to conjure a cloud for her and her 'grandfather'. They quickly fade from view and you disperse the fog, relaxing as the Shinjuku neon-lit night surrounds you once more.

X] Go see the Landlady and get some more keys. Damn it.
[] Take a look at Akari's letter.
[X] Walk back home, avoiding the spy-trees. You need to relax.

You start walking home, taking the routes you know will avoid too many trees in one place – and that includes those inside the interior habitats that were all the rage in some of the offices as well. It's a cool evening, rather than cold, and you quickly find yourself lapsing into that sort of thoughtful head-space where you're truly relaxed and not worried about all the terrible trouble you and your family are in. The neon glow of Shinjuku is reassuringly real, the mark humanity leaves in the ether maybe, and you notice a few cat youkai here and there, mostly in alleys, keeping to themselves.

It's a less complicated world than the one you were born into in some ways, but a much harsher, much harder world too. Spirit children's fortunes wax ans wane with those of Japan, and while some things have been harder, others are easier. All in all, Tokyo has been kind to you, and you wonder if the city-god is watching you make plans around her beautiful town with interest.
>>
>>35688635
As you get closer to home, you spot the lookouts immediately. A slow circuit nets you two cars full of foreign agents who seem to have no idea that your apartments exist but have a good idea you come around here. There is also a car containing the young Catholic priest, Father Cristobal Harris. He is looking intently at the edifice, apparently having penetrated the mystic protections. And totally giving away that he's waiting for you to enter. Stupid him, you don't have a key, ha! Wait....fuck.

Anyways, there's also an unusual number of police cars cruising the area – you've seen no less than three in the past fifteen minutes it took you to scout the closest ten blocks. You wonder if they're looking for something of if Taisho or Hojo are pulling strings. Not that it will help them. More importantly there aren't any of Anonimous or any unknown spies or watchers. You count yourself lucky for that – a real professional could cause you trouble.

[] Kidnap Father Harris and have a chat with him.
[] Steal an agent or two out of the cars and interrogate them.
[] Wreck the cars and surveillance systems.

[X] ….you know what, it might be time to speak to someone in charge of those foreigners.

….you know, Wakaba was supposed to take care of these idiots, but despite his ignorance....no, because of his ignorance, you think Father Harris might need a little warning about what he's up against.

Especially since it's pretty clear he's been placed here as bait for you to kidnap and then have a nice, reasonable discussion with, where he's supposed to convince you of the error of your ways and help him due to the fact Father Harris will actually be quite sincere about his misinformed beliefs, unlike his superiors who are clearly using the poor young man as bait.

Of course, it might work on a girl less interested in lilies than you are. Or less of a Yakuza. Or if you were as smart as everyone else thinks oni aren't.

Naturally, that doesn't stop you from killing all their cars' catalytic converters, radios, surveillance systems, computers, and everything else that makes a car go and a spy useful. Since poor Father Harris isn't using any of those, of course, it isn't nearly as much of a problem for him. You walk around his car and tap politely on his passenger side window, leaning over for him so he can see the ragged sleeves and cuts on your dress.

Father Harris rolls down the window, using the hand cranks, leaning over into the seat and looking up at you, genuine concern on his youthful face. “Good morning miss, are you in need of relief?” You don't even need water eyes to see how sincere he is. And he's noticed the cuts, and has no trouble looking at your face.

“Yes please, I need some help.” You step away from the car and cover your breasts with one arm, as he quickly exists the vehicle. In the distance, the foreigners are scrambling and trying to determine what is going on, but they're so far away they're meaningless for you and Father Harris has no clue about them at all. As Father Harris walks quickly around the car to help you you step a little further away from the car, and deprive him of any sanctuary. “But there's a problem, onii-san.”

He looks seriously concerned, especially seeing the damage to your outfit that the flying chains caused earlier, though you're healed thanks to Emi-sama's charm. “What difficulty are you having miss?” Such nice Japanese. And the poor fellow is totally concerned.

“Well, first, is you're not really looking at me, onii-san.” He's probably a little older than twenty, and he's definitely got that kindness they instill in young priests and monks before they become jaded. Or learn better. “You need to really look at me, onii-san.”

He looks terribly concerned, and studies you all over, only becoming more concerned by the tears and gaps in your clothing, especially your sleeves and the red marks along your left arm. “I'm sorry, I don't understand miss! Are you hurt, or is someone after you?” Oh Great Kami, if only you knew, you poor little man!

“No, onii-san....LOOK at me!” You glare at him and he blinks in confusion, and then starts looking more carefully....and you can see when it happens, when he stops looking at the human in front of him and sees the dragonette. “Glad we got that cleared up, Father Harris. Personally, I prefer you over the phone, you use too many formal words in person.” He takes a step back, but you're there, in his face, your hand taking his and turning him, a half arm lock and your other arm other wrapped about his chest. He starts to draw in a breath and then you leap backwards towards the building behind you, landing lightly on a windowsill and leaping to another building nearby, bounding leaps that shock him so badly that he forgets to scream.

By the time you make the rooftop, he's half panicked and shaking, and you gently let go of him and let him try and recover his wits. You open your water eyes as her struggles with what he is dealing with.

Water Eyes reveal the same as you saw before: a truly devout young man who is innocent and firmly believes in his cause, and while he has power, a measure of it, it's pure, undiluted by training or use. He's pretty much an earnest – and terrified – young man who is swimming with dragonettes and youkai.

You pat him on the head gently. “You'll remember in a few minutes, I'm sure, just keep breathing.” Turning around he scrambles into a kneeling position and pulls out a rosary, this one with a decorous cross in gold with little garnets and peridots on it. Probably meant to be rubies and emeralds, but he's young and probably it was a gift. “Hey now, if you try that with a real Japanese demon or youkai, it'll probably eat you alive you know.”

He nonetheless starts to chant in Latin, and you can sense the potent power surrounding him, calming him, even giving him a measure of protection. Not against YOU, unfortunately, but it would probably work on most lesser youkai. Calmer now, he looks at you, then you see him thinking back....there it is. He remembers. “You were near the house that exploded....in the freak rain storm....”

We have been told that fully supernatural entities outside of their native domains (including magic weapons) suffer an incredible level of depowering.
If a Seraphim tried to start something in Japan, it would find that it is quite a lot weaker here, than in Europe.

“I caused that rain storm. I'm the daughter of a dragon, I can do that. You and your friends have been very rude to me. Especially that little trick you tried over the phone.” He blushes deeply, and looks truly embarrassed. He is definitely neither happy about the deception nor about how he was forced into it, but he obeyed because it was his duty. Duty you can understand very well. “I'm not upset at you. Believe me, if I were upset at you things would have gone a lot differently. You just need to tell me where I can find your Monsignor Julian so I can tell him to stay away from my principle personally.”

“Your princi – you mean Kiki Kumatori? Ah, no, that's wrong, ah, Kumatori Kiki?” He looks, and is genuinely concerned for Kiki-hime's well being. “Really, we're just trying to help her. She's in danger, mortal danger. Her soul is imperiled and you must let us ~help~ her!” Yes, that's honest. He put far more emphasis on the helping part than the 'you must'. Looks like your primary assessment was correct – he's bait to get you to talk to him so he can convince you of reason.

[X] Right you silly priest, buckle up and hold on.

You keep your hand movements under control – he might misinterpret and for all the trouble he could be, right now he's just a scared young man. Your tail is a little harder to control, and he blinks as he catches sight of it swishing back and forth slowly. “You were misinformed. Kumatori Kiki is not more possessed than you are, by either your demons or anything spiritual from Japan. Her sister is a miko – a priestess – and there are two spiritualists with her almost constantly, one of them my own sister.” No need to confusing him by telling him the other is your co-wife. Co-husband? Second wife? You really need a chart. Your seer, in any case.

“Her father is concerned for her well being, and we have been asked to perform an exorcism on her, to safeguard her soul. Please, let me take you to the Tokyo Archdiocese, and-”

“The what?”

“Ah, Saint Mary's Cathedral in-”

“Stop.” You hold up your left hand and he glances at it then back to you....and then stares at your sapphire fingertips, claws, and the part of your palm that is also sapphire. You take advantage of it by lifting the smallest of your crystalline digits. “First, there is no way in any world that I am taking my principle to a public church. I don't have nearly enough security to cope with the spectacle that would cause, because she IS famous, not to mention devoutly dedicated to Shinto.” You lift your ring finger. “Second, given that she is by birth a creature half spirit and half human, an exorcism to cleanse her of her spiritual elements would do worse than kill her. It would destroy her soul in ways you don't even have words for in your language and I don't have time to teach them to you in mine.”
>>
>>35690610

That takes him back quite a bit. “Third, if you have no issue with me being half-dragon, then you really shouldn't have issues with her being half-dragon. Whatever evidence of possession you have is completely fabricated, because a half-dragon who is being possessed is obvious even to humans without power. They wreck small towns and slaughter dozens of people before they're put down.” Serious exaggeration in scope, though not in possibility – usually possession is cleverly hidden and used for more subtle things. But the amount of destruction they could cause is easily in the realm of a small township begin annihilated.

He's stunned, as though he expected you to capitulate easily, and probably even more stunned by your understanding of spiritual natures.

“Fourth and finally, since it is her father paying me and whom I personally took responsibility for her safety from, any further claims of 'her father is concerned' are immediately filed under 'lies I am being told'.” The poor priest looks totally defeated and very uncertain now. “And if you have any spiritual beings up here watching over you aside from your Jesus-kami or Mary-kami, you had better warn me right away because unlike you, I CAN kill spirits with impunity. Because that's part of my duty, both to her and to the kami and kamuy I serve.” Maybe stretching it just a little, but not inaccurate.

Also, better safe than sorry.
>>
>>35690635
“So....if your Monsignor Julian insists on seeing me, I'll come see him in person, in neutral territory, at a time and place of my choosing.” You consider for a moment, deciding on how far to take this. Father Harris is looking distraught, but not afraid, though it's clear you've made him seriously question his superiors. Water Eyes never lie.

Exorcism by miko or have a spiritualist kill the possessing force.
>>
[X] Give him a mild demonstration of your power.
[X] Help him up and take him to where he can catch a cab.
[X] Open the roof access door for him and let him go down on his own, with your appreciation.

You blink back the power and offer him your right hand. He notes the delicate sapphire scales along the back of it, but takes your hand anyways and you pull him onto his feet effortlessly, landing him gently. You brush his bottom off with your tail, and he blushes. “And in case you have any doubts....”

Keeping his hand in yours you walk him to the ledge of the rooftop, and glance at the sky. Overcast still, which is good. You look at him, and then point out the people standing around the burned out vehicles, talking on phones and trying to repair equipment. “Those are spies and mercenaries from a non-Japanese country. They were waiting for me too, and I've wrecked the surveillance equipment, their cars, and spotted all three of them. The other one is on the other side of the buildings over there.” You look at him seriously. “And now I'm going to make them miserable, because they annoyed me.”

He's shocked; it clearly hadn't occurred to him that being a bodyguard actually might mean there were threats to your principle. You gesture mildly and totally unnecessarily....the clouds open upon them, a rainstorm far worse than it should have been. They're scrambling to protect their exposed equipment and trying to find shelter from the downpour, which has wicked gusts the blast the interior of their cars, rain sheeting in the most inconvenient ways and spilling under eaves where they try and hide.

You give them the Ryukusa works, and they SUFFER.
>>
>>35691182
Father Harris is looking up, because the rain isn't anywhere near you, or him. “Mind you, this is just me being petty. If they'd actually managed to follow me, or if they'd caught one of my people....well, I'll pass on explaining what would happen. It wouldn't make you happy.” He looks at you, and he shivers a little, understanding exactly what you mean. “I'm glad we had this little talk. Please let your Monsignor know that no hard feelings, but he's not allowed to bother us any more.”

You walk him to the stairwell, disable the alarm, and tear open the door easily with your left hand. This earns you another stare from the bewildered young man, and you walk him into the building. “It's not that I don't appreciate what you, personally are trying to do, you know. You're just being misinformed by, oh, probably a number of people.” The stairwell is quiet and well lit, though, and you quietly and gently make the guard pass out by lowering his blood pressure a little before returning it to normal. Since he's three floors down, you and poor Father Harris pass by his unconscious body – which you pick up easily, to Father Harris' shock, eve after your previous demonstrations, and then gently lay out on the next landing, so he doesn't wake ~too~ stiff.

“I'll speak to the Monsignor, miss, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain all this to me.” you glance at him, but he's being honest. His earnest nature is very real, surprisingly, and he seems to have taken what you've said to heart. The fire exit from the stairwell leads out into the light rain you've let the storm dissolve into, and he sighs looking up at the sky. “I'm not sure how I will explain all of this to my superiors, but I'll do my best, miss....?”
>>
>>35691225
“Ryuu Ryukusa. Goodnight, Father Harris. I very sincerely hope we don't meet again. You really don't need to have the forces of the Shinto religion at your church's doorstep, especially since Kumatori Hojo's secretary really is a half-demon and might find it expedient for you all to be out of the picture.” You pull a gust of rain and wind and vanish before his eyes, ninja hopping to the towering walls of your apartment complex and landing lightly on the unlit top of the wall.

Well, that was....you're not sure what it was. But it was definitely.

[X] ….time to deal with Wan-wan and the Landlord.

As much as you'd like to go home and sleep....or not sleep....or maybe just cuddle....you really need keys and tokens so Wan-wan doesn't eat anyone you like. You'd really like to ask her for a little touch of extra security, but at the moment you really can't afford it. You should probably let him know anyways just for the sake of the other residents.

Yeah, not looking forward to this conversation at this time of night. But at least she never leaves the office. Not that you really want to go there....ah fuck it.

You leap down and land in the courtyard area, and you sense more than hear the pad of Wan-wan coming towards you. You take out another horse-hock and toss it onto the ground in front of you. Controlling your breathing and the instinctive terror the massive creature instills in you. Instills in anyone who sees it really. Wan-wan rounds the corner and you shiver, the massive beast casually taking half of the quarter ton piece of meat in one bite and chewing on it, the huge eyes watching you calmly.

There is way too much intelligence in that gaze for you to ever be comfortable in his presence.

“Have to see the Ooya-sama. I'll come in by the front gate next time, most likely. I can't promise, because of, well, my family.” Family. That could be an issue. You consider and then steel yourself and look Wan-wan in the eye. He swivels his massive head towards you, and bares his teeth slowly, though he isn't growling yet. “Kiki-hime and Akari-niji-chan, the Wood dragonette and the Stone dragonette are pregnant with my children, Wan-wan. Don't you dare scare them or hurt them. If you do, I'll tell Ooya-sama.”

Because there's not fucking much you can really do to Wan-wan yourself – if Ooya-sama hadn't come along when she did, you would have been Wan-wan chow.

The massive beast bares his teeth a little further....then relaxes. He leans closer to you....then sniffs you several times. He chuffs at you once and then goes back to tearing apart the horse hock you gave him.

The things you do for your family....

>Is it reasonable to assume that most of Hirobi's and Inari's equipment, their talismans, arms and armor, is basically still there, waiting for their owners to return? I mean, its not like the palace was sacked.

Yes and no. Some of their belongings will be there, but many more will have been sacrificed to them and made offerings to accompany them into Yomi. Others will have been stolen by the Kaga sorcerers that Knashut Kamuy and Pauchi Kamuy had brought to cause further trouble and prevent the attack from beign recognized as an assassination (not all of them were dutiful little clan boys and girls).

there are still likely a few precious things and great treasures that belong to Inari and Horobi, treasures to valuable to have been left unguarded, objects to priceless to be sacrificed. It's safe to presume that those objects remain.

Now, whether they can be used by the reincarnated persons is another question entirely.
