You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After bugging Karel for a while about some Very Important Issues, you decided to finally head down to the dining hall and wait for Marianne to show up. And when she finally did, you saw that she's coming down with something and seems to be rather miserable.

But instead of going back to her room to rest, she fully intends to go on with her day as usual.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

A butler arrives shortly after you finish your story, bringing with him the day's breakfast: Waffles and orange juice... though Marianne shoots him a dirty look because she most definitely told them ahead of time that she has a sore throat and thus wouldn't be able to drink such a thing. Once a replacement glass of water is brought for the Princess, the two of you start eating.

Marianne really isn't in the mood for talking, so the only sounds you hear during your breakfast are of yourself devouring your food. You tried to restrain yourself, but it was still kind of embarrassing...

Once you're done eating, you follow Marianne out of the dining hall and to her usual first class of the day- Sir Gregory's lectures.

You spot Sir Gregory standing out side the room where he normally holds his lectures... but just as you're about to wave hello to him, you hear footsteps rapidly approaching behind you. Turning to see who's running towards you, you're met with what's become a commoon sight over the past month.

Elena's racing down the hallway at top speed with an excited smile on her face.

As she passes by, the self-styled "red meteor" waves to you.

"Hi Reinhooooooooooo!!!" she gasps as you casually pluck her out of the air mid-stride. Her legs keep going for a few seconds afterwards, and you hear Marianne laugh/coughing behind you thanks to this little display.
"Whoa there," you say, waiting until Elena calms down some before you put her back down. "What's got you so worked up?"
"Yeah, really," Sir Gregory says, shaking his head as he approaches the rest of you just as Reya catches up with his charge.

Reya used to constantly warn Elena about running around in the castle, but an entire month of having to deal with this has caused him to just give up.

"Umm... umm..." Elena starts to work herself up just thinking about whatever had her so excited to begin with. "I was visiting Mr. Niklaus since Karel said that he's weird and I wanted to find out how weird he is and he really is but then I said that I was gonna go over Uncle Vincent's place to play with Valerie today but then he started grumbling about him and I asked why and..." the little princess runs out of breath.
"Calm down," Sir Gregory says, patting his niece on the shoulder. "We won't know what you're trying to say if you end up fainting midsentence."

After catching her breath, Elena continues talking.

"So like Mr. Niklaus said that he got into a fight with Uncle Vincent and got beat up real bad and like the last hit made a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE crater and now it's a lake 'cuz it rained a lot!" Elena says, her eyes sparkling with wonder. "Was he just tellin' stories or did that really happen!?"

You can definitely understand why hearing about that would get her all excited.

"That was a long time ago, but it did happen pretty much like how you said," Sir Gregory says, nodding. "After the crater filled up with water, Arnaud released a bunch of fish out there ans now it's more or less a proper lake."
"Wow..." Elena gasps. "Umm, can we go there!?"
"What."
"C'mon I wanna seeeeeee~" the little princess starts swaying to and fro.

"Reya'll be with me!" Elena says, placing her hands on her hips. "And I can get Rana too if I have to!"
"Yeah, but..."
"And, umm... maybe Luciana will want to come too!" she snaps her finger.

Before you can say anything to the her, Elena runs off to do whatever it is that she does and Reya hurries after her. Both Sir Gregory and Marianne mutter complaints under their breath as the three of you enter the classroom.

Once you've taken your seats, Sir Gregory produces a letter and holds it up so both of you can see.

"What is that supposed to be?" Marianne asks.

"From how you're acting," Marianne coughs, "I'm assuming that it isn't bad news."
"Not at all," Sir Gregory replies. "According to this letter, Celestino's going to be easing up on the security on our border."

Neither you nor Marianne are able to hide your surprise.

"D- does that mean that Celestino finally captured the people behind that plot against him?" Marianne asks. "Are Luciana and the others going to have to leave now?"
"No, not quite," Sir Gregory shakes his head. "It looks like he's just lightening up on the border restrictions because he caught most of the attackers themselves. And since the border closing's done a number on Marconetti's economy, he's decided to let people enter and exit the country on a restricted basis."

You breathe a sigh of relief that Luciana won't have to leave... but then you also feel like kind of a jerk for being happy that she still can't go back to her home.

As the two of you enter the courtyard, you notice that it's oddly warm. Even though you definitely felt a pretty cold breeze coming in from outside when you opened up you window this morning, the temperature out here in the courtyard is downright pleasant. As such, you feel a little bit better about sitting here with Marianne in her condition.

She's still sniffling almost constantly, though.

Not long afterwards, Luciana arrives along with Takamaru, and she takes what's come to be her usual seat right between you and Marianne.

"I heard that Princess Marianne was feeling under the weather, so I brewed up some ginger tea with honey and lemon," Arnaud says as he places the set down on the table and starts pouring everyone a cup. "It should help with that sore throat of yours."
"Thank you," Marianne replies, sniffling even more because just breathing in the steam coming off the tea is causing her stuffy nose to unclog some.
"Just doing my job," he replies. "And I know how much you hate being sick..."
"Yes, I really do," she mumbles.

Once he's finished pouring your tea, Arnaud leaves the courtyard once again.

Fuck. I'm not sure.
Do we give Karel this push or do we at least give her one more day before we do it?
>>
>>35683486
yes
>>
>>35683486
>mention trying to get emilio to come over sir gregory's house today?
Ehh... emm... no.
Trying to get Emilio over there depends on if Karel's going over there and we don't have an answer from her yet.
Plus, we might want to use the pretense of "Karel coming over to inspect security for a future Emilio visit" in order to get us alone with Ariane and Greg to drop the reverse-trap bomb in privacy.
>>
>>35683519
>>35683486

I think we should mention that Karel's working on it, but that it's not certain. Could be today, could be tomorrow.

They all know how flaky Emilio is about group stuff so it'll make perfect sense to them.

>Plus, we might want to use the pretense of "Karel coming over to inspect security for a future Emilio visit" in order to get us alone with Ariane and Greg to drop the reverse-trap bomb in privacy.
That's a really bad excuse.
>>
>>35683486
>mention trying to get emilio to come over sir gregory's house today?
No. We need to wait on Karel's decision before moving forward with that, in any way.
>>
>>35683533
>>35683549
Ariane's house is probably one of the most secure locations in the kingdom.
>>
>>35683549
Is it?
People were saying yesterday how, from a non-Rein perspective, Ariane's a pretty random character to get Karel to open up to first. I can't think of any other excuse to get us, Karel, Ariane and Greg in a room alone, in a house that's also going to have Luci and Nico (and maybe now Emilio), all of whom have closer ties to Rein and Karel, that won't look awkward other than Karel security scanning.

>>35683578
just be like karel wanted to learn to cook
>>
>>35683578
Reinhold is always walking around in circles talking to everybody so getting someone alone doesn't have to look too weird. Since both Karel and Reinhold are fairly new to magic they could "ask her for a pointer" or something.
Or this >>35683589
>>
>>35683578
Just say Karel had some questions to ask and that Rein though Auntie Arian would be the best person to answer them?
>>
>>35683486

Since we didn't get clear answer out of her, and haven't talked to Emilio at all, pushing them long sounds like a very bad idea.

Kay, well, at least we can get a plan in order or something.
Still don't think we should mention >>35683486 though.
>>
>>35683578
This is the Reinhold who shows up at the house of a person he's met like once to ask for help baking a cake at night with a maid in tow.

Rein is long past the point of people even bothering to question his stranger ideas.
>>
>>35683624
This is very true.

I'd have liked to push on for a bit longer, but I'm tired and I have class in the morning so this is it for tonight.

The next thread will be on vWednesday night.

And now I take questions if anyone had any.

Lake Vincent got me thinking, is one man landscaping a fairly common thing?
Could/Have mages magiced up their own fancy mountains and rivers and shit?

Thanks OP! Was great read as usual.

Did they divert a river into lake Vincent? If not I doubt it would be a good place to bathe.

Hmm seems like it was a slow thread

That's a shame.

It was fairly routine morning in the castle. I appreciate the downtime but there isn't always a whole lot of conversation to be had. Calm before the inevitable storm. I don't think the borders are as safe as Celestino thinks they are.

Unknown.

I wouldn't call it "common," but it's definitely not unheard of. And there are some mages who make a living clearing out battlefiends of blast craters and the like, getting the land back to the way it was prior to said battles.

>>35683686
>Did they divert a river into lake Vincent? If not I doubt it would be a good place to bathe.
Yeah, it's connected to over and underground water channels.

>>35683687
>ETA on PGQ finishing?
The end is now in sight, and I should be done by December. I hope

And now I sleep. Thanks for playing!
