Okay, so I have the pastebin for the rules and stats here. The gist of the matter is that combat is largely going to be handled as a d10 roll low, where you need to roll equal to or below a certain skill rating. As always, I take the best of three rolls. I'm bringing back the old VMQ crit system where 10s will negate your best roll.

However, these rules can and will change or be tweaked if I see the need to, especially since they're largely untested.

RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/bECzgrjY

With that out of the way, on with the quest!

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

"The name's Lara! Lara Williams!" The girl says with a cheerful smile, her hand held out.

"Um, Karla. Karla Weiss." You respond, shaking her hand. You weren't quite used to other people being this up front with you.

"Weiss... that's a Belkan name, isn't it?" Lara leans her, her expression more curious than accusatory. Even so, it made you feel slightly uncomfortable.

>>35672072
All the infantry I've talked to loved it, because after its initial run, it could sit there and loiter.
>>
>>35672085
Bah, just copying and pasting it then

The A-10 is a great plane for what it was designed to do. However, what it was designed to do is obsolete in a modern environment.

The A-10 is actually the least survivable plane for CAS in this day and age. While yes, it is heavily armored, its fault lies in its obsolete design. The A-10 is designed for going low and slow, trying to soak up damage from enemy AA fire while taking out advancing columns of Soviet armor. However, that in and of itself makes it obsolete. By going low and slow, the A-10 exposes itself to enemy fire from both SPAAGs and MANPADs. It was taken down by both in Desert Storm. A conventional multi-role flies far above the engagement ceiling of both of those systems. Thus, the multi-role is more survivable because the best defense is avoiding being shot in the first place.

Further, the GAU-8 is useless for taking on enemy tanks. A 20 or 25mm gun will have the same effect on both soft and lightly armored targets as the 30mm. The A-10's main weapon for taking on the enemy is the missile. The Maverick missile, for taking on enemy armor. If you can bring that same weapon system on a different plane that is more survivable and can fill more roles than the A-10, wouldn't you?

I'd love it of we could pull a Pixy and pilot an F-15 and, sometime later, a Morgan.

Unfortunately, we already did the whole emulating Pixy thing in GBFQ.

Oh well, that just means we can pilot an F-14D, Mod it into a -Zipang- and then, hopefully, change to a Falken or Nosferatu.
>>
>>35671959
I want to say F-14 cause not saying it would be a sin but an F-16 or an F-15 would do.
>>
>>35672125
That's what the post number is, no clue why it didn't work.
>>
>>35672106
nah it hasn't done that much damage, sure it destroyed a couple airframes, but no fatalities.

its broken switches and gauges and canopies and landing gear and lights and rattled things loose and cracked the airframe, but that was all before they put mechanical burst limiters on it so it can't do that any more, it's why you only see SU-25's doing half second bursts, the gun is limited from doing more
>>
>>35672109
So could everything else they put over my head unless it was a shitty marine harrier or a -15, both of which guzzled too much fuel being useless.

>>35672197
>So basically, it's another piece of slavshit. Brilliant, I guess?
More like another piece of military tech during its trial run, you should see the reports from the F-111 and the UH-60's initial production batches and the problems they had keeping them in the air. Both were dropping like flies for the first couple years they were introduced.
>>
>>35672162
The Su-25 doesn't us the GSH-6-30, it uses the GSh-30-2.
>>
If it was possible to use it, I wonder if an XF-108 Rapier would be good. From my knowledge it seems to the the next gen F-4.
>>
>>35672209
Its performance in the real world has been... disheartening, to say the least. It's basically proof that aircraft like itself and the A-10 have no real place in a modern threat environment, because "hanging around for a while" while going low and slow, when the enemy has MANPADS and actual AA systems anywhere within 10 miles of it is a bad fucking idea.

But they're great at killing poorly equipped savages, sure.

Saying "BUT OTHER THINGS HAD PROBLEMS TOO" doesn't mitigate the fact that the SU-25 is an overhyped piece of shit that gets shot down fairly regularly in regional conflicts by any force that is even marginally equipped with MANPADS, much less serious air defense systems.

Not even the A-10 has suffered as many losses.

"Um, sure." You nod.

"Well, come on, then!" Lara hooks an arm around yours and basically physically drags you away.

"Have fun!" Samantha waves cheerfully.

"You don't have to drag me like this." You grumble.

"Sorry, sorry, it's just that we were waiting for a fourth pilot FOREVER. Now we've got a full flight!" Lara says happily.

"I thought Artemis had plenty of pilots." You say.

"Well, yeah, but not a lot are girls and the boss is apparently very insistent on keeping squadrons single sex or something."

"Wait, does this mean-"

"Yep! Artemis' very own all female squadron!" Lara chuckles. "Come on, I'll show you the others!"

With that, Lara brings you over a very nice looking barracks complex. It was actually hauntingly familiar, since it followed the standard Osean military barracks layout. Lara leads you inside to the rec room, where you see two other girls seated at a table.

"Hey! We got our fourth!" Lara says cheerfully, pulling you in with her. "How about we all get ourselves acquainted?"

"Ah, well," You blink, trembling a bit from mild stage fright. "I'm Karla Weiss. I guess I'll be flying with you all from now on."

"Wonderful!" One of the pilots, with long silky black hair smiles. She had the air of a noblewoman about her, or at least somebody who was exceedingly polite and tasteful. Looked to be Osean. "I'm Lilian Dupont!"

"Amy Gates!" The second pilot grins and salutes. "Nice to meet ya!"

"Hmmmm, a Belkan, huh? We certainly have a very colorful unit on our hands." Lilian smiles.

"You don't have any problem with that?" You raise an eyebrow. You've lived you whole life under Oseans giving you shit, even if they didn't mean to, so you believed were a bit justified in being a bit cautious toward her.

"Not unless you make it one." She says simply and curtly before taking a sip from a cup of what you presume is tea.

"Hmmmmmmmm." Amy glowers at you. "I'm holding my opinion on you."

It was actually a good choice. The F-22 is no slouch in BVR combat, and its stealth is by far the best. Further, in the only place where the F-22 is really in danger, the dogfight, it can outperform literally everything in the skies.

Majority of the Tiger II, Draken and Fishbed variants had shit tier radars that couldn't use BVR missiles and didn't even have built in chaff/flare dispensers. On the other hand the Phantom actually having a radar with range but shitty to no memory means you need 2 people to use it.

"That's... an interesting setup." You say. The Typhoon and F-15C were basically top of the line fighters, with the A-10 being a very good dedicated ground attack craft. That left your F-4 somewhere in the middle. However, you did notice one thing odd.

"Wait, how come you get so much better plane than me?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Because you need to earn it, silly!" Lilian chuckles.

"That's right!" Lara nods. "They're not going to just hand over an expensive plane to a new recruit like you, right?"

"You have a point." You concede. "I suppose I have to prove my worth in missions?"

"That's right!" Lara nods. "Actually, you came just in the nick of time! We're shipping out to Estovakia soon, so you'll definitely be getting into the action!"

But it isn't.

The current unit price(which doesn't matter) is $90 mil, which is cheaper than some of its less advanced competitors.
Further, its cost per flight hour isn't very high either.

Face it, the F-35 isn't that expensive. What WAS expensive was the program cost, but that is normal for modern military programs.

One thing I am not getting however, is that we're not a fucking new recruit. We were in the war. I guess it's company policy and all (as well as quest ramping up power levels) but it seems kinda dumb to give someone a plane they could possibly get shot down in because of lesser performance than a better quality one you already have.

If the cost of designing and building the plane, all the way up to where you finally start charging 90 mil for each one is astronomical, then the cost of each plane is astronomical, you cannot just treat alll that spending and debt and blown budgets as nonexistent the moment the first one rolls off the production lines.

You have to realize ALL modern projects have extremely high costs. Further, the price is expected to be 80 mil, which really is not astronomical when you look at its competitors. Like seriously, look up the cost of the Eurofighter or Rafale.
>>35673102
The research for the plane is expensive. The more you build, the more you bring that cost down. That's the burden of developing new things, the programs are REALLY expensive, but the product is not.

I'm well aware of that, but using that excuse to justify the stupidly high spending on the JSF program is retarded, you don't go spending trillions of dollars on every project, and you don't do that on something as relatively 'cheap' as a single seat airframe.
>>

"I'd like to break in my Phantom first. Make sure it's working right." You say.

"Sure thing!" Lara nods. "I'll make a call to the ground crew to get it up and running."

"I'm still uncomfortable with being treated like a recruit, though." You sigh. "I DID have actual combat experience."

"Circum-Pacific, right?" Lilian asks.

"Yeah." You nod.

"Well, that war was five years ago. Company policy is to treat all new hires as recruits so we can get a proper gauge of your abilities." Lilian continues on.

"Isn't that unnecessarily dangerous?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, look at it this way." Amy sighs, resting her chin in her hands. "We're mercenaries, not soldiers. Everything we do is motivated by profit, not patriotism. Why risk a super expensive plane on an untested pilot when you can just shove them into a cheap one, instead?"

"I guess you have a point." You concede.

You briefly wonder if you should ask what this Wolf guy is like, but you decide against it. True aces gauged each other in the only place it mattered: in the sky.

"Whoever he is, I'll find out for myself." You say as you make your way to the hangar.

"Should we get the others?" Lilian asks.

"At the very least, it's going to an interesting show." Amy shrugs.

"Hey hey hey, you shouldn't treat an aerial battle, even a mock one, as a gambling pool!" Lara sighs.

"Five bucks she doesn't even last thirty seconds." Amy slaps a bill on the floor.

"You're on." Lilian responds.

You ignore them and head off to the hangar, where your Phantom is sitting. Of course, being a newly allocated fighter, it was still painted a dull navy grab with no identifying marks. Very plain.

"Already figuring out how to paint it, right?" You hear a gruff voice.

"Um, maybe." You say, not wanting to admit it. "Excuse me, but are you-"

"I'm Bravo Flight's chief mechanic, which means I'm the guy taking care of your birds." Says a short, elderly man with a wrinkled face that resembled tanned leather. "You can call me Smokey."

"Okay... Smokey." You nod awkwardly. "So when can I get my plane repainted?"

"When you get ace!" Smokey grins. "Kills before joining up with us don't count, so you're gonna have to start from the bottom!"

Wonderful.

"All right, so is the plane ready to fly?" You ask.

"Just gotta hop in the cockpit and drive it out!" Smokey nods. "She's already loaded up to bear. Training rounds and missiles."

"UGMs, I assume?"

"Of course!"

UGMs, or Universal Strike Munitions, were the standard armament on any warplane. Small, light, and cheap, these missiles could engage both air and ground targets, making them extremely versatile. Their only drawback was that they didn't pack all that much punch compared to larger missiles, had a very short effective range, and their tracking systems weren't all that great. However, planes could carry ungodly numbers of them, which was why they were commonly preferred.

"All right, I'll be heading out, then." You say, slipping into a flight suit and donning a blank white flight helmet.

"Good luck! Don't die too fast! I got money running that you'll last longer than 40 seconds!" Smokey waves.

Ugh.

You drop into your Phantom's cockpit, going through the standard startup checklist. Satisfied that everything appeared to be in working order, you taxi out to the runway, where you see another aircraft idling.

It was a white F-22 with a bright red wolf's head painted on the side.

Well, now you know why everybody wasn't expecting you to win this.

The pastebin rules look have decent for actual combat.

But having a 10 override a 1 is retarded, a crit fail shouldn't override a crit success, especially on such a narrow spectrum as a single d10

It pretty much guarantees that we will do nothing but crit fail and we cannot possibly avoid a crit fail unless we roll two 1's every set of dice.

The rules would be actually usable if not for that crit fail shit.

>>35674445
A 10 does not override a 1, it just cancels the highest roll. Tht's not that bad.
>>
>>35674451
well seeing as Merc uses a different variation and ruleset for each quest using D20's he has its hard to figure out what the rules are in a new quest when he's said nothing about them
>>
>>35674149
"This is Bravo Four, taking off." You announce.

"Alpha One, taking off." You hear Wolf announce as well. He sounded... pretty damn young. Younger than you expected, really.

Both of your warbirds' engines roar as they push for takeoff speed. You take a glance to the F-22 at your side, but you can't see anything through that mirrored cockpit canopy. However, you're pretty sure he can get good look at you through your older clear canopy. You wonder if he was scrutinizing you, or just plain ignoring you. Eventually, both of your planes lift off from the runway and climb in the air as fast as possible. Sure, the F-22 was better than the F-4 in pretty much every way, but the Phantom was no slouch when it came to pure thrust.

"Alpha One, Bravo Four, this is Loki. I'll be your mission controller for this battle." You hear an unnaturally smooth and confident voice speak through your radio. "We'll be following rules for a standard training engagement. Both planes are only armed with cannons and basic missiles. The battle will be kept WVR, and will be concluded once one aircraft scores a positive kill on the other. If you feel something is wrong, you may disengage at any time. Is that clear?"

"Alpha One, copy."

"Bravo Four, copy."

"Alpha One, you'll head west while Bravo Four heads east. You will turn and engage on my mark."

"Good luck, nugget." You hear Wolf say, and you could tell it was not for your benefit, as his voice was dripping with a mix of mild condescension and self-confidence. Mostly the latter. Man, if you could shoot this guy down, it would make you feel very, VERY good.

"Good luck to you too." You reply curtly and your eyes dart around trying to figure out what to do. You can try flying high, that way you had room to dive in case Wolf tried to jump you. Plus, there was plenty of cloud cover to at least visually mask you.

Or, you could stay low, where his radar wouldn't be as effective, and he'd be forced to engage you low and slow, negating most of his plane's advantages. But, that left you extremely vulnerable to a diving attack.

Let me throw you guys an example of how I think this'll work:

Karla has a GUN skill of 7 and she has to roll under it to hit someone with a d10, lowest of 3.

We roll a 2,8,9. We take the 2, we pass.
We roll a 1,10,5. The 10 cancels out the 1 and we take the 5, we pass.
We roll 2,8,10. The 10 cancels out the 2, we take the 8, we fail.
>>
>>35674738
>being closer to the ground makes missiles less effective
Only works for surface to air missiles. In aerial engagements you damn near always want the height advantage, because you can trade it for airspeed or bleed it through aggressive maneuvers without fear of crashing into the ground.

>>35674500
>Go high.
>>
>>35674750
You nailed it.

Might want to have

We roll a 1,6,8. We take the one and Crit Succeed

>>
>>35674815
My (rather admittedly retarded) headcannon is that the missiles have a dual (And shitty because of it) IR/Radar head, which allows it to use both, in a reduced capacity of course, to filter as much interference as possible.

>>
>>35674500
You decide to take the fight low. It was dangerous, but it gave you the biggest edge to staying alive. You hand grips the control stick tighter as Loki begins to count down.

"Three....two...one... MARK!"

You immediately dive for the deck, heading as close to the ground as possible. If you were lucky, the ground interference would mess with both the radar and infrared sensors in Wolf's UGMs. You look at your radar, and then roll your eyes when you remember the Raptor has damn stealth features. Your radar wasn't going to pick it up unless it was very close, and at that point you might as well just eyeball it.

"Smart move, but that's not going to be enough to win."

Suddenly, your missile lock warning system screams as Wolf tries to score a radar lock on your plane. You raise your head and see that he's directly above and behind you in a dive to get right behind you.

However, despite how loud your warning system is shrieking, you never see any missiles actually fire off. You figure your plan actually paid off and his radar couldn't get a solid lock you. He doesn't even try shooting them off in IR mode, either.

Meanwhile, you maintain your course, waiting for him to get closer as he'll inevitably commit to his dive and settle for cannons. It's less actual prediction and more just gut feeling, but once you feel he's close enough you hit your air brakes, making sure stay above stall speed. This low to the ground, you did NOT want to stall.

You feel the distinct thuds and vibrations as several cannon shells slam into your Phantom's hull. However, you damage registration system doesn't mark you as shot down, so you're still in the game. You need to do something to turn the tables on Wolf.

You could risk a high G turn to try and get behind him, or at least get a firing solution. Or, you could power climb to get some altitude and then flip over. Worst case, he follows you and you engage him head to head. Best case, he tries to get some distance which gives you a precious few seconds to fire on him.

You gamble pays off, as your Phantom limps along in the air Wolf has no choice but to pick up speed, shooting past you in order to prevent himself from stalling. This gives you a critical window to attack. You could fire a pair of UGMs in IR mode. They'd be slightly less accurate, but this close, it shouldn't even matter. Or, you could try going for guns instead.

"Sure, I'll take that." You say, grinning at the thought of countless personnel on the ground losing their bets.

"All right. Loki, we're calling it here." Wolf says.

"Roger that. Exercise is concluded. Alpha One, Bravo Four, return to base."

Wolf's fighter banks and takes the lead, as you settle your Phantom just behind him. The landing is smooth and done without incident, considering you've done it over a hundred times before.

However, the moment you step out of the cockpit, you are literally dive tackled by Lara.

"Haha! You actually did it!" Lara laughs. "You actually survived a fight against Wolf!"

"Is that... something special?" You gasp as you try to get some air back into your lungs.

"He's like, one of the best pilots here, and you scored a hit on him in a Phantom!" Lara slaps you on the back, hard. "You got some real talent hidden there, it looks like!"

"I guess." You blink.

"It was certainly a surprising turn of events." Lilian smiles.

"You cheated out of five bucks." Amy grumbles.

"Now now, Amy, I think Karla here as amply proved that she belongs with us." Lilian says soothingly.

"Come on, let's go grab something to drink!" Lara grins as she hooks an arm around your shoulders.

"Well, it's customary to meet someone you've battled face to face, right?" You blink.

"That's Belkan honor for you." Lilian chuckles.

"Wait, what?"

"Ah, we're just old war buddies!" Lara laughs, hooking her arms around both you and Wolf and pulling the two of you close to her. "Fought the good fight saving Emmeria and all that, but Wolf was already a mercenary at that point and I only joined up with Artemis after."

"'Old'? Wolf sighs. "That war was barely a year ago."

"Anyways, don't let me keep you girls." Wolf laughs as he escapes Lara's grip. " I actually gotta see my mechanic about a certain faulty radar. Hopefully I'll see you in the skies!"

With that, Wolf makes his exit.

"So." You turn to Lara. "You said something about drinks?"

"Yeah! We got a club on base!" Lara nods rapidly. "Expensive as hell, but I just so recently acquired quite the windfall!"

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow. "Did you... bet on me?"

"Ah, well..." Lara laughs and scratches the back of her head. "I figured someone had to bet on your side, you know? I figured you'd draw him at the most."

I just realized that each Ace Style has their own set of challenges

Knight: Less access to high tier planes early on
Soldier: Average access to high tier planes
Mercenary: Easy access to high tier planes early on, but more difficult enemies

Mercenaries make the most cash while Knights make the least. The difficulty level of the foes are also scaled to each style, usually outnumbering you.

>>
>>35677221
Yeah, the middle path usually is the best of both worlds, but there's the constant need to balance who you finish off and who to spare to stay in the middle.
>>
>>35677006
"Why, thank you Lara." You say, giving a slight smile. One of the few genuine ones you've ever given. "That means a lot to me."

"Yeah, well, we wingwomen gotta look out for each other, right?" Lara laughs. "Come on!"

On the way to the club, you get into a small discussion with your fellow pilots and manage to ferret out their callsigns.

Lara was apparently called "Bloodstripes", or "Stripes" for short, due to how her plane is painted; dark blue with bright red stripes.

Lilian was called "Angel", considering how she always seemed to be where she was needed the most. She helped escort or cover other planes, which earned her nickname. Her Typhoon was white with yellow highlighting.

Amy was called "Magnet", due to her A-10 attracting all sorts of enemy fire. Her plane has the typical shark mouth, and was painted in a dark green woodland camo style.

"Do I get a callsign?" You ask, pointing to yourself.

"Not until you make ace." Lara shakes her head. "Until then, we're pretty much required to call you Nugget."

Wonderful.

The four of you finally reach the club, which is dimly lit and oddly smoky, but pretty well filled with people. You all get a private booth in the corner, where you're served your first round of beers.

Seconding >>35677333

Say, do we get to change loadouts for our aircraft?
>>
>>35677359
It's from AC Zero.

Ace Style comes with the amount of damage you deal on enemies and targets of opportunity.

Knight Style focuses on sparing unnecessary targets.
Mercenary Style is indiscriminate destruction.
Soldier works on a little of both.
>>
>>35677296
>Ask your wingmates what they did before joining up.
>>
>>35677359
"There are 3 kind of Aces. Those who seek Strength (Mercenary), Those who live for Pride (Knight), and Those who can read the tide of Battle (Soldier)."

Kind of like a "morality meter". The more Yellow targets (Usually fleeing aircraft, civilian targets, non military infrastructure, etc.) you shoot the more cash you get, and the more Mercenary you become.

You mean Knight since we already picked that first thread?
>>
>>35677404
Best thing about the styles is that they're all balanced in their own way.

Merc aces are usually outnumbered way more compared to other ace styles.

Knight aces are facing off against superior planes while they're usually stuck trying to get good planes

Soldiers are a mix of both worlds, and have to try to balance whether or not to spare a target to stay on the middle path.

"Anyways, what did you all do before you joined up with Artemis?" You ask as you take a sip from your mug.

"Well." Lara sets down her mug. "Considering I'm the leader of this little band, I guess I'll start off. I used to be in the Emmerian Air Force, so I fought against Estovakia a year or two back. Not much to say that you can't grab from a history book."

"Then why did you leave the air force?" You ask.

"Well, you could say that I got a bit addicted to the thrill of air combat. Or just flying in general." Lara smiles. "When the peace deal was signed, I resigned and joined up with Artemis, since the new Estovakian government contracted them to hunt down elements still loyal to the previous regime."

"I see."

"Well, for me, my family has traditionally been a very philanthropic one." Lilian speaks up, her voice still smooth and lilting. "We donated money to a number of charitable causes, such as hospitals, schools, orphanages, and more. But... I felt I had to contribute a bit more... directly."

"So you joined the air force." You nod. "How much did you see?"

"I was assigned to the Capital Air Defense force, so I didn't see that much action, besides repelling the odd air raid or patrol. After the war ended and my unit was disbanded, I immediately signed up with Artemis."

"Well, for me," Amy leaned forward, her face very red. Seemed like she was a lightweight, "this goes back to my childhood. Belkan War days."

"Oh." You blink, afraid to say anything more. You knew there were a lot of people on both sides who still couldn't get over that war.

"You see, my family was forced out of their home early in the war. They were part of a refugee convoy trying to flee the fighting when a Belkan unit started chasing them. Probably would have caught us if an if my Dad hadn't shown up."

(cont)
>>
>>35677765
No! The idea is brilliant... YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO CARRY IT OUT BUT THE REST OF US DO!
>>
>>35677772
"You father?" You ask.

"He was flying an A-10."

"Oh. OH."

"Yeah, well, something about the sight of that A-10 flying above us, keeping the Belkan tanks at bay... it was just burned into my mind, even as a baby. Unfortunately, Ustio doesn't really have a standing army, so a PMC was my best bet to fly one."

That dreamy look of almost childlike wonder on Amy's face was something very surprising.

You then tell them your story. About how you started as a nugget in the opening stages of the Circum-Pacific War, and the disaster at Sand Island. The atmosphere suddenly becomes very solemn.

"All right, how about one last round? For the guys who couldn't make it." You say.

Immediately, your squadmates know what you're referring to and nod. Lara orders on last round. Whiskey, this time, instead of beer. She fills out five glasses, leaving the fifth to sit on the table as an offering.

"To those that couldn't make it." You say, raising your glass.

"To those that couldn't make it." You wingmates murmur before downing their shots.

As you look over your fellow pilots, you get the feeling that you could trust them to watch your back. Hopefully none of you would join the ranks of the countless pilots you're toasting to...

It's also how the way each game presents the narrative.

AC4's narrative is the POV of a man who recollects his days as a young boy hanging around Yellow 13 and how much he respected Mobius 1 as a pilot.

AC5 is about a conspiracy theory

AC0 is in the form of a documentary. An interviewer doing a documentary about The Demon Lord by interviewing the pilots who flew with and against him.
