Part 17

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz. And you have just made history, for good or ill.

It was the day after your land mark speech that saw King Fulk deposed in a bloodless coup. He no longer wears a crown, though he still remains wed to the queen. Melisende is now undisputed ruler of Jerusalem, and you were her chief instrument in achieving this. You had received accolades from the assembled nobility, and invitations to visit or serve with all the lords save those most loyal to King Fulk. He remains in the palace, confined to his quarters and kept under careful watch. No longer was he allowed to wear the colours of Jerusalem, and all his Angevine loyalists had fled in the night to who knew where.

The Queen's Men had spent the last night celebrating, it felt as if all the city had been suddenly visited by a feast day. The streets overrun by a throng of young people cheering a cry for their restored queen. It was a day that would be remembered. And you had been caught up in that celebration as hard as anyone else, downing offered wine and ale while being cheered on by the noble elite of the Holy Land. Indeed, you could scarce recall a thing that had happened the night before....

You awoke alone, scrubbing filth from your eyes, your sheets all tossed about. You blinked and flexed your toes, feeling like the wrong side of a horse shoe. You pop your shoulder and groan. Your knuckles are all busted on your left hand and you wince to close it. When you climb out of bed you do so naked, and immediately stumble about looking for a basin of water.

You splash your face, bring some life back into you.

"Sweet St Anne," you groan.

How had you even made it back to your chamber last night? You tried to piece it together. All you remembered was a visit to a tavern house, a flashing grin and, possibly Solomon? There had been a fight, just a fist-fight. You could not recall with whom.

Ah well.

You dressed carefully. Where was Hugo to tend you?

You belted on your sword and managed to get yourself out of the room.

"M'lord," a woman blushed and dipped a curtsey as she walked by. Lord?

"Just a courtesy," a voice said. You turned and tried to fix your posture. The Queen came down the other way, her sister Hodierna beside her, the old soldier Theodore as well. "You haven't lucked into a lordship yet, scoundrel. Why you seem to do your best to avoid them." She spoke with a smile and a tender hand upon your shoulder.

So 56, average. Let's hope we didn't go overboard but damn must Wilhelm have partied hard. From the bottom of the dungeon to the hero of the Queen's faction in a single speech. Hope his stomach could take the sudden influx of wine and food.

You took a knee and groaned. It didn't much want to move.

"I'm afraid you find me in a poor state your highness," you said, "My skill at words don't quite match my capacity for drink. It seems all my talent is in my tongue." You crack a grin and Hodierna at least giggles, while Melisende just smiles.

"Not all your talents," she said, "I had a sight of that myself."

You feel a slight blush of your own come upon you.

"I don't suppose you've seen my squire?" you asked.

Melisende bid you rise and you did so graciously, though wobbly, she had to lend you an arm to get you upright. "He is with my son, giving us both a day to ourselves," she said, steadying you upon your feet. She took you by the arm as she waked. She was a beautiful creature, you though as you looked down upon her, a sly smile across her face. She had her hair gathered into two long braids that fell about her shoulders. She seemed of the habit to change her style often.

"I must thank you," she said, "You've won for me a kingdom in an afternoon."

You walked through the near deserted corridors. The throne room. She stood before it, smiling broadly.

"What should I do with my husband, you think?" she asked, two fingers pressed to her lips, "Mayhap a divorce, or exile perhaps. Please, share your thoughts."

"What about forgiveness?" you offered. Your answer brought a surprised blink from the queen. "He is still your husband, and in many ways a good lord. I think he also might love you, in his way. How could he not?" That brought they sly smile back to her face. You step up beside her and rest a hand on the arm of the throne. "Perhaps the Christian thing is the best course of action."

"Perhaps..." she all but purred the word, sliding up onto the throne. She considered you with her chin on her fist, leaning against the arm of the chair. "But it is such a shame that I do not love him," she said, "Though I have not disliked my wifely duty."

She leaned back in her chair. "No, if I'm to keep him it is for the sake of France and Anjou. Do not think I was serious about this talk of divorce and exile, twas just a pleasant musing." She sat a proud monarch on the throne, still considering you. You had to admit, with her poised such upon the seat of power, a small diadem about her head, all the cool grace of her bearing, you were no small part aroused.

"Now you are due a reward," she said, "And I have a few gifts in mind, but I might be vouched for one small other thing." The she tilted her head a side, "Just do not ask for my sister, that deal was already struck."

"Mayhap a kiss?" you ask, leaning close to her. Her smile grows. "But a jest your highness," you then say, pulling back a tad, "My heart belongs to another. I need no reward past what you plan already."

"Ah, but you should not jest so with queens," she said, "You aren't the only lion here." And she put a hand to your chin and her mouth come to yours. The kiss is firm, a slight parting of the lip, and it lingered a moment before she released you. The sight of you so flustered brought a laugh from her lips, the back of her hand raised.

"I see why my sister has fallen for you, Koblenz," she said, and slouched back upon the throne, head propped by her arm, a satisfied smile upon her face.

"The gifts I have for you. The use of some soldiers, ten foot-men of my personal household and a knight to lead them," she pushed out her feet, enjoying the feel of her throne, "A small allowance also, to be drawn from the Templars once a month. 30 pfennings a month. And a gift of two hundred beside that. And of course, you have the freedom of the city."

She slipped back out of her throne, did a dancer-ly twirl. "Ah but I feel so light today, sir," she said. And she danced 'round and kissed you again on the cheek. "Go with God, Koblenz, and my trust." And she gave you a playful push toward the door.

Fair enough

You set forth to find Solomon. Hugo had told you they were encamped in the church of St Anne. It was a new place, and getting directions there was easy enough. Most folk were happy to see you, touching forelock or bowing for 'your lordship', though you had no lands yet to your name. It had been a while since you had last seen Jerusalem, and the ancient city was a warren of tight corridors branching off broad main roads. Stalls were set and crying wares, mostly food for hungry pilgrims, and you had to keep a hand on your pouch for all the hungry young pickpockets running about.

You found the church, a humble place, and when you entered a grey haired nun greeted you.

"Would you be lord and master of these miscreants?" she motioned to a pair of shoulders that gambled in the corner. They rose and saluted you awkwardly. "At last he comes to fetch his dogs."

"Apologies m'lady," you said, and made an irritated motion for the soldiers to leave.

A young nun with pitch black hair and ghost pale skin led you to a door. "The black man rests yonder," she said in an accent you did not recognise. She had very blue eyes, and made no urgent move to leave.

You knocked upon the door.

"W-who is it?" came Adelheid's voice. You grinned, recognizing something in that voice. There was a scrabble, and the door opened.

Had she grown out her hair? It suited her, falling about her face in sweaty ringlets. She had a scowl for you. "Come in," she said. The pale girl peered after you curiously, hoping to catch a glimpse.

Solomon lay sprawled naked upon her bed. He had a black eye.

"Brother," he said, sitting up and covering himself with the pull of a blanket. He wore a grin. The man had grown a thick stubble since last you'd been properly together. Adelheid stood with arms crossed by the door. She had a cross look but her posture was much improved. She looked like a proper woman instead of a shrew made human.

"What, uh," you motioned to your own eye. Solomon laughed.

"You thought you could take me in a fistfight," he said, "Claimed you were invincible. Invincible! But this is not from you." He drew himself up, forgetting his nudity. "You went down fast and hard, you got one hit in on my chin and near broke your hand." He tapped his eye, "This was from the ten or so other young men who hoped to test me."

"It was incredible," Adelheid spoke with a shiver in her voice. No doubt some other female witnesses shared that tremble in her thigh. You nearly laughed.

"You were drunk," Solomon said as he pulled on hose, "All is forgiven." He dressed, pulled on his maile and belted his sword, took up quiver and bow. "Shall we finally be back on the road? I tire of city living." Together you pushed out of the nun's private chambers. He paid no mind to Adelheid, though she looked after him with large eyes.

"Soon," you say, "I'd like to gather everyone outside, meet up with our friends beyond the wall."

Solomon nodded. "Good idea," he said, "I'll see you out there with whomever I can find."

"Wait," Adelheid said, coming to the doorway, but Solomon kept walking without looking back. You saw small tears break upon Adelheid's face. She slammed her door shut before you can speak a word.

"That's a man," the pale girl said in her lilting soft voice, watching after Solomon.

You make a quick wing by the palace. You find your brother at play with the young prince, carrying him about on his shoulders. The child was laughing, bapping Hugo on the head as the boy ran. Hugo was laughing too. Strange you no longer thought of your brother as a child. They were watched by a woman and a little girl.

"Time to saddle up," you said.

Hugo swung the boy down from his shoulders, puffing. "Yes sir," he said, fetching his sword from the corner.

"Don't go!" Baldwin said, fetching a wood sword from the corner as well. He struck at Hugo. "I don't want you to go!"

"I've a duty," Hugo said, tussling the boy's hair, "Don't worry. I will be back."

Baldwin watched you leave with wide wet eyes. "Hugoooo!" he called after your brother, waving his sword above his head.

Hugo gave a puff of emotion, correcting the collar of his tunic. "Let's be on, sir," he said with a false grin.

Pfennings: 593 currently
>>
>>35645381

593 pfennings, 30 monthly income, and ??? from prisoner and corpse.

We should leave a modest sum as safeguard, but I'm pretty sure we can cash out the prisoner and corpse with our gazillion noble friends now.
>>
Since we want to lead a full blown campaign to take a city it'd be a good idea to get the Strategikon of Kekaumenos. We are going to be leading more men than we ever have in a type of battle we have very little experience in.

Definitely get something nice for Hugo that he can't afford himself, let him buy himself a good sword (since he has 30 himself) and get him something awesome. The two tomes though are absolutely invaluable.
>>
We should save some 150 pfennings for those jews we couldn't help.
>>
>>35645401

Sorry, anon, you can have the 14 year old version of her instead.
>>
Shouldnt we have our corpse and prisonder brought before the queen?

>>

> Chivalric arming sword, 5 pfenning (+5 war)
> hauberk, 60 pfennings (-4 damage) x2
> personal standard, 75 pfennings (+2 leadership, +2 War for personal retinue)
> Avicenna's Canon of Medicine, 150 pfennings (+10 intelligence, protection from disease)
350 all togethor
>>
>>35645434

>>
>>35645444

So from going off those found in every list, y'all want:

Strategikon (150)
Canon of Medicine (150)

hauberk (60)

Is that acceptable?
>>

Once we get the gang back together we need to get Solomon to make us swift as the coursing river and shit while we're mustering forces. War isn't our primary focus I know, but we have losses to make up for and we're probably going to be off to fight a lot of hard and deadly battles. Let us do our best to avoid another sacrifice like Welf.
>>
>>35645532
Nigga we have ten more mouths to feed & people to recruit, 30 pfennings isn't going to enough if we go full steam ahead.

98 pfennings with 30 pfennings monthly income plus at least 100 pfennings from the prisoner. Not to mention the corpse. That takes care of our going concern, that's ye olde accounting for you.

Plus we've never been short of opportunities for money.
>>
>>35645569
Hugo scouts ahead, the enemy will eventually try to take out the leadership even if we stay in the back. Wilhelm is going to have to fight directly and if we're unlucky it may be without Solomon or Hugo to bail us out.
>>
>>35645572

>>
So why didn't we buy

for Hugo to upgrade his sword from +2W->+5W? Its only 5 pfennings.
>>
You hand over, well, a lot of coin that day, and Hugo is almost overburden by the amount he is expected to carry. To help him you take one of the books, the one by Avicenna, and leaf through it. Had some pretty illustrations, but it made little sense to you at the moment.

You closed it up as you came upon the gate of David.

A knight waited with men in the colours of Jerusalem. He was a mild looking man with a fussy little mustache and smooth skin, little silver spurs on his boots.

"Etienne," he said, "Formerly of Gascony, at your service." He bowed. This was the man Melisende had given you, and to be honest he didn't look like much. He had a spear with penneons flying from them, and a helm tucked under his arm. He also had a slip of a squire, looked half starved with muddy brown hair and dressed in near rags. "This is Jacques," he said, noting your attention, "Low born, but does a good job." Jacques and Hugo exchanged a nod.

"On to the camp," you said, "I hope you don't mind heathen company."

Sir Etienne shrugged. "You grow used to all manner of company in this backwards place," and he fell in behind you.

You find your camp filled with familiar faces. Tancred and his men, Sabeen and hers, they embraced with friendly greeting. When the saw you the raised a cheer.

"The Lion of Koblenz!" Tancred swaggered up and struck you on the arm, grinning. But you spied a stranger in the man-at-arm's company. A red haired girl in traveling clothes. You frowned. You did not know her, but many of the soldiers seemed to.

"And this is?" you ask, noting the red haired girl. She was a buxom lass, and flashed a ready grin. She looked like the best kind of trouble.

"Maggie Ui Hara," she said, offering her hand. Girl had found an axe some place.

Tancred blushed and scratched his stubbly jaw. "She insisted on comin'," he said, "Did us a service while you were locked up."

"A pleasure to have you Maggie," you said, taking the hand. She squeezed her hand. She had soft skin. That wouldn't last if she'd a mind to use that axe. But you couldn't spend all your time with one pretty lass. Soon you had Franz round your shoulder, laughin'.

"Every time I think yer dead," the old horse faced Jew said, "You find a way to turn it around." You laugh as well and hug the old man, pulling apart only for Sabeen, who has you round the neck. Her eyes were tight from all her laughter

"You had me worried sick, Frank," she said, and planted a kiss on your lips, pushing you away. You were soon laughing as well.

"Three cheers for the Lion!" the handsome young Syrian said. It caused enough stir that other camps were casting your lot worried looks, particularly as the cheer ripped out. You found yourself settled by the dead camp fire, near your hostage, when a pleasant bundle flung itself in your lap.

"Master!" Chihirizahd said, burying her face in your lap, your own hands twinning in her thick black locks.

"Chihiri," you say, pulling her face up. She wore a girl's smile, looking suddenly very young, and you rose for her, a keen yearning gripping your loins. She kissed you, not asking for permission, mouth hungry for yours. The crowd whooped at the sight.

You don't need a written invitation. You're out of your hose and pulling her skirts up all the way. You find her blessed moistness, and push it straight in. No time for teasing or touching, you were to hot and urgent, her body too inviting. She gasps as you fill her, grabbing your fresh cut hair, pulling herself up for a hard, tongue sucking kiss. She was in no more mind for waiting than you, nor in the mood for it soft and gentle. You growled deep as you mounted her, and she responded with animal noises of her own, hard grunts against your thrusts, mouth open and eyes crinkled as she pulled at you, pulled you deeper.

You went for it like that, mindless and biting, pawing, inelegant hard -fucking- for some time. All your frustration poured out and into your concubine.

And when you were done you collapsed upon her, breathing hard and empty all through your body, faintly sick from exhaustion.

Both your clothes, you hadn't the mind to get fully undressed, were stuck with sweat.

"Thank you," you said, kissing her, "You saved us all."

She kissed back and groped your limpness. "This was thanks enough," she said before licking the sweat from your neck, pulling you back into her arms.

By the time you muster the strength to stand the camp has assembled. A baggage train had come from the city, packed mules and with it some womenfolk. They were for the soldiers, and they also had some children with them. They found their husbands, father's took up their children. It was as a small army in that respect.

How many cavalrymen do we have now?

Wilhelm, Solobro, Hugo, Etienne, Sabeen, maybe Franz, and 4 Lancers.

You bring the old man forward.

"No one has stood by me longer," you said, handing him the pole, "And no one I would trust more. You have been like an uncle to me, from when I was a small lad."

The old man looked up at the flapping colours, and a bit of moisture came to his hard old crag of a face. "I served with your father as a lad your age," he said, "Pulled him from a burnin' siege tower in Lorraine. He called me brother then, took me into his service." He wiped at the leaking fluid. Not tears on this old horse. "An' I was there when he wed your mother Brun, and stood by all their children. The ones they had and the ones they lost. Helped 'em bury the wee ones." He gave a puff and fixed his shoulders. "I never took a wife, but I think I have always had a family. And I'm proud now to carry your standard."

He held it up for the men to see, and they roared for it, swords and spears held high.

Your men prepare to travel, but where are you headed?

When Sabeen shows you the remains of Shams ibn Shams you almost choke. The man was rotting thick in his cloth.

"Yeah, we don't like to look after him much," she said, and jerked a thumb, "We get that Egyptian idiot to do it." The man in chains watched you wide-eyed with wrath.

"Let's sell these bones," you said, holding a handkerchief to your face. Flies had long since eaten his eyes from his skull.

Has sir Raymond left the city yet? I'd like to see about getting him on board too if possible (or his doctor acquaintance). In the camp there is a man, an old Turk of some regal bearing. A student of geology and geography, you were told, who was studying the plants and things of the Levant. With Sabeen by you, you confer with the man. He is known in Zengi's court, and can be trusted, Sabeen even vouches for this, recalling the scholar from her youth.

"He used to hold lessons in the gardens of Aleppo," she said.

"And you would interrupt these lessons with rocks and rotten fruit from the trees," the man said, "You are still as ever a wicked girl, Malik's daughter."

He said he could find a fair ransom from the parents and wives of poor Shams. "I should think in his current state, some two hundred or so good coin," he said with a nod, "If he were alive, two thousand could be the price. He was much loved by his friends and family." Indeed, the scholar seemed saddened by the sight of the remains.

You tell him to send the coin to Jerusalem, in keeping with the Templars. They were good for such things, and he agrees.

He instructs a slave to bind up the corpse and take it upon his back, and gives you a respectful nod. "You have done a good thing, young sir," he said, "May your death come quickly and without much pain."

You wave him off.

"Old bastard," Sabeen looked like she could spit, "Used to hitch my skirts and strap me 'cross the bare buttocks when he caught me." She gave her haunches a slap in demonstration.

It took long enough your parting was left for the next day, still finding you camped outside Jerusalem.

You strike your camp a day late, and begin the march to Jaffa. Your baggage train is not so large as to slow you greatly, but it does have an effect. Hard flat footed women keep up with their men folk and their children run playing half-naked as they went, sitting up on the mules when they needed rest. Your excess horses were kept tended by this experieced camp keepers, and in that respect they proved themselves in valuable.

It was a day out across the hard packed dirt of the high road when Maggie gave a cry, looking back. "Jesu!" she said, "That fool girl."

A distant figure on horseback, black haired and pale, riding hard but awkwardly toward you.

"Whose this?" you asked, looking over at the axe-armed lass.

"A dub Connacht girl," she muttered, her usual good cheer gone.

The ghost pale girl with pitch dark hair came up upon your party. "You thought you'd be the only one to sneak away for adventure?" she sqawed at the red-haired lass.

"I thought you weren't fool enough t' follow," she replied, striking her chest out.

"Well then we're both fools," she said.

"But is any fool enough t' have ye?" Maggie asked, eyes flicking to you. The black haired novice looked up to you.

"And you are?" you asked.

"Etain," she said, "Ui Niall." And she brushed a lock back behind her ear and gave you a smile.

You really were rubbish against pretty girls with nice smiles.

Hugo looked from one to the other of the girls, a dumbfound expression upon his face. The girls took note of him and exchanged a giggle. Etain took her horse and fell in beside the red haired countrywoman, and they chatted in their foreign tongue.

The next day opened on the sight of storm clouds on the horizon, rumbling with thunder. A bad storm could clear a road or worse. You were not far from mountainside, and the flow of mud could be deadly.

"Who knows this land best?" you ask, and the handsome Syrian rides forth, a flourish of his lance. The womenfolk all give a little coo at his handsome grin and flare.

"I know this lands," he said.

"We need shelter," you said, pointing to the storm clouds.

He needed. "Yes, I know a place." He took his horse about and set a heel, and you were all left in his wake. He kept ahead to show you the path, but always ahead, until you came upon what looked like ancient ruins.

Old cracked open temples and collapsed pillars, in the midst of high lonely palm trees. A small oasis feeding them.

"A place of dead false gods," he said, "Used by Bedu some times. You draw your tarps upon the shattered ruins, shelter beneath." He showed you how, and soon you were all bunched up beneath high tarps. The crack of lightning came out, and you heard a girl whimper. Sabeen shook with each bark and flash, eyes wide and looking upward.

Some of the children were also scared.

You heard one of the soldiers swear as a fellow coughed on his neck. It was hot and tense beneath the tarps, and despite the hard rain beating down upon your heads, you were all sweating.

Well its not just for her, but thinking of a story about Zeus that doesn't involve rape or adultery is difficult. (I also was suggesting it because of the Heracles Lion Helm connection that we have).

Playing or singing may prove better though. I just thought of Zeus due to the situation and past references to the Greeks and Romans. "Do you suppose that the false god king of the Greeks is angry that I garb myself like his son?"

I AM A MAN WHO WALKS ALONE
>>
You shuffle over to the warrior-girl. She shivered at every distant crack.

"Are you scared?" you asked.

"No," she replied, but the next flash of thunder saw her bury her head in her lap, "Maybe a little."

You might have laughed. You'd seen Sabeen plunge into the thickest of combat, striking all about her with scimitar in hand, laughing at death itself. Now she looked almost meek as she shivered. Almost, except the hard eye she cast you.

You produce your harp and struck a couple cords.

"I hate it," she said, scratching at the dirt on her boot.

"In ancient days they reckoned thunder and lightning the sign of an old god," you said, "Zeus to the Greeks. Jupiter to the Romans. A false god of course, just a story thought up to explain one of god's natural miracles."

"I've heard the stories," she sniffed, "And of fierce old Baal as well. Pagans are stupid." The belt of thunder had her scuffle closer to you. Sweat ran thick across her face, down over her pouting lips. Her eyes were very wide in the dark.

You strum your harp and sing a little, and her panic settles.

"My father would hold me," she said, "To keep it all at bay." She pushed herself up into the crook of your arm. Her shaking settled even as thunder continued to growl in the heavens. "You really do play well," she said, "I remember when you played in Sidon I thought I might...might visit you after." She started to tremble again, but it was a different sort. "You'd made me cry and I wanted to...I am not sure what I wanted to do...."

She lay her head across your chest.

"You are a strange Frank, I wish I understood you people," she said, nestling against your chest. A pleasant warmth filled your chest as you looked down on her face, suddenly very quiet and peaceful. She soon gave a soft snore as she lay against you.

"Don't stop playin..." she muttered, and you strummed your harp for her.
>>
You play on a while for the children in the camp, helping each man and woman find some peace and sleep.

You were soon asleep yourself.

You awoke with her against your chest, your back to a snoring mule. As you rubbed sleep from your eyes the tarp was pulled away to show hard sunlight.

You all stood, and admired the pools of water that stretched across the ground around you. Sabeen herself gasped, her eyes alight.

"The rewards of a storm," you said, and she smiled up at you.

But the pleasure was cut short when one of your men pointed.

Spears on the horizon, and turbaned faces.

"Bedu!" Aymal said, "Up your horses, they are dressed for fighting!"

But your men are slow to form.

You have your spear and lion helm in hand at a moments notice, pulling it on. You point too and fro, sending your footmen in double rows forward, spears presented and shields held high. Tancred and Etienne took up the centre, clapping spears to shields.

"Come on heathen, come on!" Etienne called, his little eyes wide to show much whites, "Come on!"

You gathered up your horsemen, and stamped behind the infantry line. The Bedouin were marching up, one among them stepping forward and gesturing.

"What are they saying?" you asked.

"We've trespassed on a sacred place and must be punished," Aymal said, "I did not know this, forgive me."

The Bedouin did not wear much armour, they looked little better than peasants, and only some rode camels. This was unlike what you had heard of Bedu in the past. They were not often thought a violent people. But those spears sure seemed mean. Perhaos there was no understanding the heathen in the end.

You exchange a knowing nod with Solomon. He brings his spear about, and takes a gallop with his horse. He leaps -over- the line of footmen, his horse stamping the ground before them, nostrils flaring. The Bedu champion comes up on camel back, a long lance across his lap. He is as dark of skin as Solomon himself.

They exchange some words, and Solomon laughs, the Bedu chuckles.

They raise lances to one another.

Though the Bedu's lance is longer, and his camel a strange beast, Solomon comes on calm and unconcerned. It is like a day at play for him. He knocks the long lance aside and brings in his spear.

The Bedu with whom he had exchanged a laugh didn't have time to bring a shield up, or readjust his lance. Solomon took him effortlessly. A wolf on a lamb, his spear point driving through the unprotected upper lip, straight up until it hit the roof of the man's helm. He did it all in a single gallop, and drew his spear out as you rode by. He displayed the bloody tip to the Bedu as their champion slid from the back of his camel, dead.

The Bedu visibly flinched, and began to walk away. They did not break, but simply melted before you back into the desert.

Solomon walked his horse before the line, a cheer from your foot men.

"There's a man," you heard Maggie say, and heard a sigh rise from the womenfolk.

You felt you might swoon a little too.

"He kills so effortlessly, I see why you choose him," Sabeen said, "But really, maybe show your favour to some other warriors sometime." She spurred her horse with a huff away from you.

You ride with Solomon on one side and Hugo on the other.

"You are always impressive," you said, "You'll make us all bad showing off like that."

He smiled. "I do not show off, I simply do," he said. His spear moved dexterous 'tween his thick fingers.

His eyes turn upward and he grins. "Truly, I am at my happiest with a sky above me and a horse beneath. That Church was lovely, but it dug into my skin."

Yes, the Church. You knew something of how he spent his time there. "Why so keen to leave?" you asked, "That Church had some pleasant company."

He shrugged. "It was pleasant enough for a time," he said, "But its time was drawing out. She was saying fool things, speaking of children and marriage, and my eye I cannot help but have it roam." He smiled. "I am not meant for marriage, or I would have remained in Dongola with my betrothed. She will be happier married to my brother."

Women, they were something alright. "You have your eye on anything now?" you asked.

He shrugged. "No, the girls are too young for my taste and the lady a-horse is lovely but....I do not poach." He cast a sly eye over to Hugo when he said that, and you saw Hugo blush.

You supposed he did keep company with Sabeen when he could, but did he really...?

"Hugo has become a man," you said.

"Oh?" Solomon looked at the boy, "You bloodied your spear, eh?"

His blush was furious, but he nodded.

"The start of a mighty tally," Solomon said, "Just like your brother here."

Hugo snapped. "I'll not be like either of you!" he said scowling, spurring his horse away.

You exchanged a look and a shared shrug at his sudden temper. He was a growing boy.

You come upon Jaffa, and you march in organised, many coming out to greet you. Family of the soldiers in your company came out with joyous crying. You saw Tancred embrace a fat little woman, they were crowded with children both small and growing large. One boy near matched his father in height.

"You kept her safe," he said, and he bowed to you.

"I kept myself safe," she said, pushing at her father, "He merely helped." But she flashed you a grin, and pulled you into an embrace with her father. It took some time to disentangle yourself. They were very warm with each other, Malik pressed his forehead to hers, a smile rich upon his face.

"I have heard about your exploits," Malik said, straightening his robes, "Your fame grows. What's next for you?"

You decide not to tell him of your plans. You liked Malik, but he was a mercenary at the end of the day. He might be on Ascalon's walls by time you brought an army down upon it. Though his smile for you was genuine, who knew what would happen when the war drums started.

"Who knows?" you say, "God has his own plans." You reach your hands up to the heavens.

"Very true," Malik grinned, twirling a mustache, "You have grown wiser I think. You certainly look older."

"A night in a Jerusalem cell will do that," you said, "I had twenty."

He barked a laugh and pinched your cheek. "Still a scoundrel though," he said, and released you.

You continued up to the keep. Count Hugh waved down at you. His wife, a grey woman near twice his age, stood by his side. She had been crying.

You dismounted with Sir Etienne. His little squire took the reins of both your horses.

Count Hugh came out. He was smiling, but sadly. You heard the echoing sobs of a woman.

"I've done it," he said, "Though I hated to do it."

"Done what?" you asked.

"Annulled my marriage," he said, "After our talk I got to thinking, that I must have an heir. My dear wife cannot provide one. She already has children grown. She'll be off to live with her youngest, Lord Walter."

"And do you have a bride in mind?" you asked.

He nodded. "My cousin Roger has a daughter I hope to wed. A touch sanguine, but legal. We are close, it would make us closer still."

This was good news. If King Roger saw better cause with Jerusalem, it might be easier to win his support in taking Ascalon. But still the sobs of the aging woman intrude on you both. It did not sit well with you, and you could see it pained Hugh.

"Come, stay the night," he said, gesturing to his keep, "Rest, have a real bed, and let us talk."

That night he throws for you a warm welcoming feast, roast boar and duck for the Saracens. You dine well, he is a generous host. But he sits listless, twirling his knife under his palm, eyes lost in thought.

A young girl sits speaking with Malik. She has the same curly mop as Hugh, and a slight part in her front teeth, but she laughed large and had a generous mouth, strong brows to add weight to her expression. A small black mark beneath her left eye was the only blemish upon her high cheeked face.

A very lovely looking woman, and everyone around her seem infected by her smile.

But even when she reached over to take Hugh by the arm, her smile could only muster a small little turn of the lips from him.

You have Hugo bring forth your harp, and give it a practiced pluck.

"You play?" the woman asked. She wore light grey and flowers in her hair.

"Well enough," you remarked. And you plucked a merry tune that had the folks clapping along. You kept half an eye on Hugh as you played. His expression did not change much, but he tapped along to the rhythm.

The girl stood and took to the centre, did a lone dancer for the amusement of the crowd, some men whistled, while Sabeen drummed her plate.

"Aines," she cried, "You show off!"

"Come dance with me then!" she called with a laugh, pulling the warrior from her chair.

Malik's brow furrowed as his daughter took up the Frank girl's hand, and matched her step for step. It started a normal step, but as they crossed and brushed against one another a lewd hoot went up and the men leaned forward.

"Inshallah!" Malik muttered, averting his gaze as his daughter swanned about with the other girl. When your stop both were red faced and laugh against one another, and everyone but Malik applauded. "Disgusting," he muttered, "It is haram!"

Hugh was laughing though, and poked the sour old man. Other girls were standing and pulling men forward to dance with them.

"You want to dance?" you saw Maggie standing before Hugo, hands planted on hips. "Let's do a dance."

But Hugo scowled and drained his horn instead.

They called for you to play some more, and Maggie danced with Etain instead 'til the handsome Syrian cut in and danced with both.

> play a while longer

You disappoint the crowd when you set aside your harp. Some boo you as you take a bow, but its all in good humour. Your position is taken by the nervous court musician, who doesn't play near so well, but at least has energy. Hugh has risen from his seat and gestures to the corridor.

You pat your brother on the shoulder. "Show some boldness from time to time," you said, "You would be surprised. A woman looks when you win other women, and looks away if you are too much the grumbler. You win nothing by sitting back and glaring."

Besides which, if he did not move quick you reckoned Aymal may have both the Irish girls by morning. They certainly appreciated the way he moved them both at once.

But you have other concerns, and follow Hugh into the corridor.

"What say you?" he said, "Consider my offer?" You had not put much mind to it, though it was still generous. "I've heard a whisper you mean to have a royal bride. My sister is a sweet girl but...I understand." Then he spread his hands. "But Ramla is still yours if you want it. It is a keep with farmland. Good land all around, with a small town growing fast. Overlooks a beach. And a muster of troops besides. If you don't take it, I've a mind to give it to the Church or one of the Orders." He said such you thought he did not want to do that.

>> take Ramla without his sister

>>
>>35648050

No its not actually, but some diehard sadist is haramming everything related to fun. Like ISIS level bigot. Dancing with your belly exposed is haram, but what Sabeen is doing is dancing with a girl so its a mixed case. It could be haram if she do it to sexually entice the men as her intention because she exposed her aurat (forbidden parts, for women you only allowed to expose hands and face) to grown men.

Mixing gender in a merriment is also borderline haram, well blowjob is borderline haram too but its not actually "haram"

It is a big sin however, but no man or woman is without sin

You did not see the conflict between your ambition and this offering. You might serve Hugh, for a time, but who could say where the balance would be when Ascalon was taken, and you had a royal wife? And besides that, Hugh did not seem so bad an overlord to have.

"I suppose I cannot refuse without seeming a curmudgeon," you said, and offered him your hand.

He laughed and took it. "Very good, very good!" And then he pulled you into a back slapping embrace. "We will do incredible things together, Wilhelm, incredible things!"

He released you, held you at arms length. "Was there something else?" he asked.

"I have a mighty task laid out before me already," you said, "Ascalon."

Hugh's brows raised.

You grin. "I mean to take it, as a gift for Queen Melisende. What say you, are you bold enough to help me?"

His brows lowered and he grinned, slapped you upon the thigh. "Aye, that I am," he said, "Ascalon, it will be a jewel in her crown."

You would need warmachines to see the job done, you would need engineers and miners alongside good soldiers. Hugh had put much thought into how he might take the fortress city. "And we would need friends," he said, "Strong ones from beyond the kingdom. Still our people are turned 'gainst one another. We must court foreign capital. Could you call for your one time liege in Trier, and have him come?"

That was an idea, the arch-bishop held no small obsession with making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Still, he would not know you from any other sell-sword that worked up the Rhine. But it was a thought, and a letter with your new title might serve to impress him.

"But first learn your new land, and from there prepare your forces," he suggested, "Train your troops and send for worthy men. Entertain other lords and visit other courts. You are a bold knight, but not yet a true lord. Do not fear, I shall teach you." He took you by the shoulder, his mood much lifted. "We shall be as brothers, bound by oaths of friendship, and when Ascalon is taken, share the spoils!"

Now, you did not know about that....

So the good news is that Elias is on his way to France then ?
>>
>>35648816
Oh come on, you don't enjoy empire building?

It won't be too anal.

>>35648825
Maybe.

Season one Don Draper, that is.
>>

personally I blame Orlando
>>
>>35648853
Meant more in practice than names. I really have no idea who either of them are.
>>
>>35648842

I am from Chapter Quest, if its done with the same mechanics it can be good. Otherwise pointless bickering ahoy

>>35648853

Aye
>>
>>35648854
Probably just less random events/ambushes when we travel
>>
>>35648876

This guy: >>35648859

He's a little cranky. He looks up to both you and Solomon, but he isn't a womanizer and doesn't quite 'get' the whole flirting game just yet.

Whether or not he follows his brother's path or forges one of his own you'll have to wait and see.

Or a 100 for that matter.

Asked this in the general but will ask here too.

I'm thinking about running a Halloween Quest one-shot, but struggling for a topic. Any thoughts?

Doesn't have to be historical or connected to this quest.
>>
>>35649045

Saber? Hodierna or Elaine?

Spooky spooky adventure Wilhelm & Co.
>>
>>35649012
Do you think the items we got for Hugo were sufficient for the shit he went through? Will Hugo talk to Wilhelm about his PTSD episode or all of his adventures in Jerusalem before the trial? What's Hugo's opinion on Fulk?

I'm afraid this isn't Modern Satyr Quest anon.

Eh, that seems like it'd only happen if we got three 100s.

>>
>>35649059

Everyone says you're a vampire or werebeast. However, at festivities you may get a chance to make a friend.

Secret roll to see if the friend discovers you actually are one. Try to make an acquaintance anyway.

They're both good soldiers. Solid War and Leadership. Etienne has a higher int though.

Neither are unstoppable juggernauts, but they'll hold a line. Etienne, as a knight, can be entrusted with more 'diplomatic' tasks however.
