Tires screech as Iptaph’s truck accelerates away, but you’re already sprinting after him. You send out a mental command to Mosnter to get out after the truck and follow it, and take a shortcut after the fleeing demon by hopping a fence. You get most of the way over the obstacle just by jumping, and it’s little exertion to dig in your claws in the metal links and fling yourself over the rest of the way.

You land expertly, and take off at a dead run after the fleeing U-Haul. You flip your radio on as you go. “Ranthix,” you shout, “Iptaph’s in a white moving truck, headed West.”

The truck swerves around a corner, braking to make the turn.

“Make that South,” you add. “He’s going down that road with the cannery on it!”

Ranthix radios back immediately. “CATCH HIM AND KILL HIM!” he orders.

You grit your teeth and force yourself to move faster. You can run pretty ridiculously fast when the occasion calls for it, but chasing down a car is a stretch even for you. You’re not sure whether or not you have Ranthix’s help on this one, but you trust him. Kind of.

Just then, Monster the imp flies overhead with an angry growl. You see through his eyes for a second, and see the route Iptaph is taking. You can see a few dead ends in that direction, so that means he has to make at least a few turns – assuming he doesn’t drive right by where Ranthix is parked. Assuming the big guy has that way covered, that leaves one likely avenue of escape, if he’s not going to flip a u-turn.
>>
>>35635272

Keeping an eye on his progress, you leave the road and run straight at a brick wall, heading straight in the direction of your chosen interception point. You go into a slide and slip through the angle where the wall connects to the concrete, coming out on a darkened factory floor. (-2 PP: 23/32) Machines loom in eerie silence above you, but you ignore them and run onward. You leap over conveyer belts and dodge around inactive assembly line equipment, and just a matter of seconds later come to the far corner of the factory.

You lay on the speed and hurl yourself through the corner, flashing briefly between solid layers of bricks and a place that defies all description before coming out on the road again. (-2 PP: 21/32)

An engine roars and headlights flash. Iptaph’s truck is coming straight down the road. He’s going to blow right past you in a couple seconds.

Barring any weird tricks from Iptaph’s side of things, you should have this in the bag.

You suppress the sudden urge to try and corner step into a moving vehicle – though it would be sweet as hell, you don’t know if you should try anything that crazy. You pop your MP5 and burn unholy energy into it. The muted sound of wailing whispers in your ears, but it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. (+1 Stress: 35/100) (-2 PP: 19/32)

You open fire on Iptaph’s truck. Your aim isn’t very good with his headlights blinding you, but bullets versus unarmored vehicles isn’t really much of a toss up. You pull the trigger and spray the truck with corrupting lead.

The SMG makes an agonizing shriek with each bullet loosed – each shot punches through the front of the truck and chews away the metal around it like it’d been sprayed with acid. A dozen or more shots later, with most striking true, the truck whooshes by you, acrid smoke and fire erupting from its mutilated engine.

You doubt Iptaph’s going to get much more mileage out of his rental. With the engine destroyed, the truck immediately begins losing speed. It’s momentum, however, keeps it moving far past you, and you have to run after it.

You chase after, capitalizing on your surprise attack. If you give Iptaph time to think, you’re going to have to deal with more illusions and who knows what else.

You keep up with the truck easily now that it’s lost the power of acceleration, though it’s still some distance in front of you. Eventually its speed lowers enough for you to gain on it. You haven’t noticed any attempt on Iptaph’s to bail out, so that’s something.

You rush up on the driver’s side – you see a darkened figure inside, clutching at his chest – maybe one of your shots nicked him? It’s too dark to see clearly what’s going on, and with glass in the way, your shadow sight isn’t going to help out here.

Well, from what we have heard very few survive encounters with Verwelkens, and even those who take an interest in them have limited knowledge of what they can do, since they seem to keep to themselves. They're basically boogeymen who, for all you know, are living in your personal shadow. Perhaps people even have superstitions such as saying the word will make them take interest in you. There's all kinds of fun to be had with near-invisible geomotry defying monsters.

You tap out the shadows in the interior of the vehicle, planning on restraining Iptaph while you shoot him to death.

Except you don’t feel anything inside the car. Understanding clicks inside you, and without conscious thought you leap backward and out of the way of a double-barreled shotgun blast.

You round on your target and find Iptaph a few paces off, constrained within a human glamor. He drops the spend sawed off to the ground and stares at you, his greasy face is contorted into a hate-filled glower. Intangible energy crackles about him. (Iptaph: 10? HP; 18 PP)

“You’ll have to bring my apologies to Waldric, One Who Walks the Shadows,” he says as he adjusts his suspenders, his voice barely a growl. “I underestimated your baron – I mean really, a Verwelken? How theatrical. Did he give you a rhyme to toss out as you run me through?” Underneath Iptaph’s cool visage, however, you feel a seething pit of rage and pain, and there’s a confidence to him that’s unsettling. Use explosive flare, it does 14 damage, is AOE so he can't practically dodge, and we have used BE and VE powers in this mission so he probably expects them both, we know he expects VE. Three types is rare as fuck especially IN/VE mix, so it will have the element of surprise.

If the demon hunter or whoever shows up we can pass it off as landmaster pryomancy, and it absolves us of suspicion of being the VE since VE cant into flames (except us).

TLDR explosive flare is good for combat and social reasons.

You’ve been trying to think of something good all night, and now you’re here and it’s time, and you have nothing.

You start laughing to yourself. “No,” you tell Iptaph, finding this extremely entertaining for some reason. And then you pour terror into your gaze and shove it at him.

But you do so sloppily, and Iptaph predicts your attack. He knocks aside the negative energy with a skillful flick of will. You’re taken off guard by having your attack parried, and before you see what’s going on, Iptaph charges you.

His form flickers and shifts into that of a grotesquely fat, hairless goatman clad in a pair of tailored suspenders. He has crooked horns, random protrusions of bone jut out of his body at random. His skin is shiny and sickly translucent. Despite his unshapely appearance, he moves like a cat. (Iptaph: 24/24 HP; 18 PP)

You throw up your claws to intercept him, but he dodges to the side and cocks back a fist. There’s a flash of power, and an emerald light shines forth as he hurls forth a punch. The flash stuns you and chases away your protective shadows, and you take a bone-cracking blow to the head. (+15 Stress: 53/100) (-8 HP: 14/28)

Everything goes spinning and falls into confusion.

Eventually you realize you’re on the ground, on your back. Your nose flashes with pain and blood’s everywhere. Your vision is blurry and your eyes refuse to focus.
>>
>>35639899
Iptaph stands over you with emerald lights dancing over his body. Your hood’s been thrown off, and he can see you for what you are. His breath reeks of eggs, and sounds like a wet clump of leaves when he speaks. “That’s for my brother, hellborn scum,” he says, smiling wrathfully at you.. He flicks his arms out to the sides, and bloody spines shoot out of his wrists like long knives. “And thanks for the powers, chump –I’ll make sure to send your horns to the baron before I visit him myself.”

You try to focus. You need to move or… anything. But it’s so hard to keep your eyes open. It feels like your neck almost snapped, and you can barely think.

A ray of pain stabs you through the shoulder and pins you to the ground. Iptaph wrenches his bloody spine blade to the side, twisting your muscle and blinding you with pain, and then raises his other blade to stab you in the face. (+8 Stress: 61/100) (-4 HP: 10/28)
>>
>>35639925

You clumsily raise your claw in protest, still unable to remember how to use any of your powers to get out of this mess.

Iptaph snarls at you and goes for the kill. Or he would have, if Monster hadn’t just dive bombed him. The little imp screeches, bites, claws, and breathes fire anywhere and everywhere possible on the demon, sticking mostly to the face.

The delay’s all you need. You just… have to pull yourself together, but you feel too disoriented to do crazy stuff.

Iptaph finally manages to grab Monster and snap his neck. He discards the carcass, which turns to ash and blows away into nothingness. The demon’s face is bloodied and burned raw in places, but anger cuts through the. (Iptaph: 22/24 HP)

He turns back to you, but you’ve summoned enough presence of mind throw up a hand. “Get the hell off me,” you growl, hitting him with a straight burst of hellfire. (-5 PP: 14/32)

At this range it’s impossible to miss. The burning, roiling flames incinerate your sleeve and washes out over the front of Iptaph’s body. His skin boils and cracks, and he recoils violently from the seething flames with an agonized yell. “Queen’s blood,” he shrieks, still smoldering from the heat. (13/24 HP)

You stagger to your feet. Charred meat and burnt flesh greet your nostrils. It smells wonderful to you, but it’s background noise to the red pulsing at the edges of your vision. Every second Iptaph isn’t dead makes you angrier and angrier. (+5 Stress: 66/100)
>>
>>35640892
Your raw, unbridled hate for the demon before you lends you a weird kind of strength, and makes you giddy. You feel light on your feet, and things that aren’t moving seem to be having trouble holding still.

Iptaph recovers, and faces you again, the weird green lights across his body becoming more intense. “Shadows and fire - what pit birthed you, scumborn?” he asks, scowling in pain and hate. But you can feel the panic setting in on him – he has no idea what he’s dealing with. You don’t either, but that’s never stopped you before.

>>
>>35641045
We don't get PP back from corpses, at least not so far as I can recall. We regen HP from that, but not PP. We can steal it with Dark Heart passively, or actively with Soul Drinker, and we get a bit back after a kill with Bloodlust.

We're booking it after this anyways though, so don't spare the PP. Him being dead is more important than anything else.

Your mouth twists upwards into a smile as you say nothing in answer to his question. As far as you’re concerned, he can die in ignorance. You snap your hand to the side, and a fiery tendril of seething-hot, liquid flame uncoils from your fingers. (-2 PP: 12/32)

You jerk your hand to the side, sending the line of heat snaking out behind you. You send as much power as you can surging down your fire whip, causing the asphalt to bubble and split at its touch. (-5 PP: 7/32) You strike forwards with a hellish lash. At the same instant, Iptaph brings his boney blades together, and sickly green energy envelopes him like a cocoon. (-6 PP: 12)

Whatever spellcraft he’s using, it’s not enough. When jerk back on your whip it strikes the demon’s arms like an exploding shell. There’s a flash of searing heat and light, accompanied by a resounding bang. His green shield sizzles off of him like the fat off of ground beef when you throw it in the frying pan, and the blazing heat does him in much the same way.
>>
>>35641739

The skin and the flesh of his arms vamporizes into bloody steam, and the whip melts through straight to the bone. The residual heat fries the rest of him that hasn’t already been char broiled, and he collapses backward with a soundless gasp of horrific pain. (Iptaph: 2/24 HP)

You win.

You begin laughing wildly at your fallen opponent. The scent of his blood and the exquisite intensity of his pain beckon you forward. (-7 Stress: 59/100)

You don’t trust Iptaph alive or dead, so you throw another few lashes across his face. It only takes a few more times before you’re sure beyond a reasonable doubt of his mortality. A fevered excitement overcomes you at his fiery demise. (+3 HP: 13/28; +4 PP: 11/32; -4 Stress: 55/100)

You flick on your radio. “Got him, coach,” you tell Ranthix. You tell him about where you are, too.

“WELL ACCOMPLISHED,” Ranthix replies. “I AM ON THE ROAD TOWARD YOU. KEEP OUT AN EYE FOR HEAVILY ARMED MOTORCYCLISTS.”

“Uh. Yeah,” you say, distracted. The smell of sweet, freshly spilt blood is too much to resist.

You let your fire whip vaporize into smoke, and descend upon the cooked goat. You don’t think you’ve ever had goat before, but it’s got a hearty, savory taste. The ashen, kind of sulphuric aftertaste is pretty weird, but maybe it’s just an acquired taste. Either way, Iptaph’s blood is more than filling. (+10 HP: 23/100)

A yellow hummer drives up by the scene, and you peel yourself away from the mutilated body.
>>
>>35642355
Reeber sticks his head out a window and barks happily at you.

Still feeling off balance and light headed, you walk up to Ranthix’s hummer and let yourself in. You find Ranthix already has a seat covering in place, having guessed at how messy you’d be after all was said and done.

Your sensei gives you a fierce, burning grin. “YOU ARE THE HERO,” he declares as you get in. You feel kind of tired, but also wired – you haven’t come off the blood rush yet.

“LET’S RIDE.” Ranthix slams on the gas as soon as you’re in your seat, and starts putting distance between you and the scene of Iptaph’s death. “SO SPAWNLING, HOW DID IT GO?”

Sanity is overrated.

Might want to dance around the part where we had a near death experience from what amounted to a slightly beefed up mook.

Technically we were supposed to be seen, Waldirc's verwelken assassin won't scare anybody if nobody knows we're there.

A bit late but fuck it.

Last thread's electrocution by sword was superbly awesome scene and I wanted to draw something for it. The plan is to have the actual electrocution take places afrer this panel but I don't think I'm there yet.

Soon(tm).

Also rip my participation in Hellborn quests properly until Lawngod gets away from college.

I'd say having all your foes turn into corpses with no sign of how, would be pretty scary.
