Part 16

You are Hugo of Koblenz, and the last days before the trial have come, and with it the other defendants.

Count Hugh and Pons had arrived in arms, accompanied by a contingent of foot soldiers, lesser lords and knights, with the Lord of Sidon in their number. Not just them, but the other lords of the realm as well. Pagan of Oultrejordan and Walter of Caesarea. Raymond du Poy, Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitaller. Ancient Archambaud of the Knights Templar. The minor lords of Bierut and Galilee and the knights of further afield. All come to witness the trial in the High Court. The so-called conspirators, the Queensmen, rode boldly forward, banners flying, armoured and in arms as if to war.

You watched them ride down the road, through the outer camp, come in through David's Gate.

Even at your young age you knew this was a battle even if steel would not be drawn. You saw Hugh make a jest, and watched them laugh, but it was with a bitter edge. Lives were on the line here, not least your brother's.

You note those who were not present. Lord Baldwin of Ramla and the Constable Barasan.

You look back the other way, into Jerusalem. King Fulk's men were assembled, an armed greeting party with Prince Elias at the head. You thought for a second that there would be a great clash, a melee in the streets of the Holy City.

But when Hugh rode through the open gate no blades were drawn and friendly offerings were made. You saw Hugh clasp wrists with Elias and share some comment with his neighbour a priest. You saw some of the nobles clap Hugh on the back, offering him grins and support.

You saw all this, and wondered what it could mean for the trial coming.

You make your way down the battlements of Jerusalem. Some of the men-at-arms give you a friendly nod as you pass. You were known as a friend of the King after feasting by his side, the boy-warrior of Germany. No one blocked your path.

You made your way down the muddy street towards the arrived party. They had dismounted by the outer wall of the Tower of David, giving their reins over to squires and manservants. Hugh's clothes were coated with the dust of the high road, every man still tramped the dust and sand off their boots. For all that he was here on a charge of conspiracy, the man wore good humour like a cloak. Even for the king's son.

The sight of Elias sent a hot flash of hate through your gut, and the smile he shot you - so sly and knowing - was near enough to provoke violence. But you weren't here for him.

Count Hugh grinned to see you, rubbed you 'round the bristly pate. "Ey squire, I see you've lost your hair but kept your head. If I should be so lucky it's only for the grace of god," he ran a hand through his own thick woolly hair and laughed.

"Where's Lord Baldwin?" Elias asked before you, "I thought all lords were meant for this most important summons."

Hugh sighed, shook his head. "Poor man took a fever on the road, past just three days ago. We sent his remains back to his wife in Ramla. A sad thing."

Elias blanched but kept his smile. "Yes, very sad." You saw his hands clench.

"Well, anyroad," Hugh slapped his hands together, "I could use a bath and some food. The trial is tomorrow?"

>>
"The day after," Elias said, but he had his head bowed and was already walking away.

"Well then, there you have it. I shall see you in court," Hugh said, waving after Elias' retreating back. When he was out of ear shot Hugh's good smile slipped, "You treacherous fucking snake," and spat. He flashes a grin at you, raises a thumb. "Let's be rested, and merry. It will give us all the best chances."

Hugh and his number gathered up for drinking, catering down the broad road of Jerusalem. Some were making their way to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to give some offering of thanks, or to ask for God's favour in the coming trial. Most had a mind for drinking, bathing, beds and with luck and coin, pleasant women to fill those beds.

That's actually a good point now that I think about it.

When you represent poor people in court, you have to make a point of making sure they are well-dressed. There's some real cognitive biases against people who dress sloppily in the courtroom. It hurts their credibility and makes the jury and judge less likely to find in their favor.

When last you'd seen your brother he had been in an awful state. If he were brought before a court pale and unkempt, who knew what they would think. You thought you had some friendship with the king. Certainly, he had called on your company twice since the feast. Once to share with you a secret to boar hunting with spear, and another to show off a litter of pups born to his best bitches. He had made some noise about finding time to go hunting.

Once the trial was past.

During these visits you had seen Elias skulking around the Queen's company and swanning about Ioveta, and it had made your blood boil.

You found the king in the gardens of the palace, stringing up a bow with a target set up the other side. He sent arrows loose, one, two, three. He was a fair archer. He was attended by court hanger ons, knights and nobles of no standing and most of Angevine extraction. When he saw you he smiled.

"Lad, bring me up that other bundle," he said, pointing to the quiverful hanging by a statue. You take it in hand as he finishes the set he has, and pass it to him. "In England they prize their archers," he said, "My daughter was married to William, son of Henry. Poor lad drowned and left my girl a widow. She keeps to the English court, sending letters when she may. He was a fine young knight. Would have been proud to call him a son. I fear what's to become of England with his loss and Henry so old."

He loosed arrows as he spoke.

"Now did you want something?" he asked, setting the bow across his shoulders.
>>
"My brother, your highness," you said, "His trial is coming and I thought he might be given better rooms for them. A chance to look his best."

Fulk's brow lowered, a dark cast upon his face. But as his eyes took every corner of the garden eventually they came back to you with a nod.

"Fair enough," he said, "Though it is not my nature to coddle a traitor."

"Thank you!" you bow but he raises you up.

"Think nothing of it, the boy has some rights even with the charge," he said, dusting off your shoulder. "Now run on to your sir!"

You took flight just on his instruction, and as you ran near barreled into Ioveta.

"Oh, Squire Hugo," she said with a smile. Your gut twisted at the sight of her flashing blue eyes. For a second you pictured her caught in lustful embrace with Prince Elias, and hated her. "I was about to petition my brother-in-law, to give Sir Wilhelm better lodging." She spoke so demurely, like a good princess.

-she bled a little but moaned like a whore-

And you saw a shadow of that whore on her curled lips. Like ants biting at your gut you saw a shadow of it in her light step.

"Very kind of you my lady," you mutter, stalking on, "But the request was already granted."

"Let me walk with you," she said, offering her arm.

You take her offered arm with some reluctance, gut still churning as Elias' lewd boasts still range through your mind. She did walk with a light step, as if she might begin a dance at a moments notice, and leaned some what into your arm. Had she truly given up your brother on every measure? You felt a mild discomfort and...something else, at the feel of her against your arm.

"It will be good to have this business put aside," she said, "To have Wilhelm free at last. The charge is so much nonsense."

You mutter some agreement but could not bring yourself to make much conversation, not about your brother and not with her.

The two of you pass Sir Joyce, who casts you suspicious eyes and rises half from his seat, but keeps his mouth shut at the sight of the princess. She gives him a dimpled smile and his irritated glare turns into a grin.

"Princess," he said with a touch of the forelock.

She walked with you all the way to Wilhelm's cell, and by order had it opened.

"He is to be given proper quarters," she instructed, "In the queen's wing."

When the cell cracked open Wilhelm looked up to the both of you, blinking at the intrusion of light, a smile slowly breaking across his bearded face. You saw Ioveta's chest and chin lift as a smile broke across her own, her eyes beaming, and knew for certain in that moment Elias was a liar and yourself a fool, and smiled as well.

She made as if to break from your arm and leap upon your brother.

>>
>>35635740
I think a lot of people have an overly negative opinion of Blaise. He didn't even seem that pissed off with Wilhelm last time he met him.

Blaise is one of those guys that only believes in strength. If he respects you, he won't hate you.

>>35635781
He doesn't hate Wilhelm as much as Wilhelm hates him. Blaise considered himself to be doing the right thing at the time. Besides, he didn't even talk Wilhelm down in front of the lord, when Wilhelm was accusing him. He praised his conduct in fighting the bandits and got on with his life.
>>
>>35635846

You let her slip from your arm and over to Wilhelm. He pulls her fast 'gainst himself, buried his face in her golden hair. He was breathing hard.

"You're not free yet," she said, holding to him just as hard, "You're not free yet. Not yet. But you will be."

He gave an unsteady breath, pulled her head back and kissed her. She sighed against his kiss, eyes closed and arching into it, and you blushed for the sight of it. When they parted he muttered something you barely caught. "I am free," he said soft into her ear, and you saw tears spring upon Ioveta's eyes, and she thumped him once upon his thigh.

"We have to get you cleaned," you said, "Your hair cut, shaved, and looking your best."

"Real food," Wilhelm insisted, "And a bath."

And then he came to you and put a hand 'round the back of your head, pulled you into a hug as well. You gave a puberty crackling yelp of surprise, and squirmed as he kissed your bristly scalp.

"I missed you brother," he said, and when you pulled apart you were both grinning.

"I missed you too," you replied. Ioveta watched with hands bunched before her face, masking a wide smile.

"We've got a lot to talk about," Wilhelm said, "Come find me after I'm made presentable."

"I will," you say, and he squeezes your shoulder once more as Ioveta leads him from the room.

It is actually less rough than the lands you passed through, with pastureland further ahead and woods running up the hillside, disappearing into the mountains. A village stands nearby, with peasants about their business.

>"God's will!" the Norman roars, drawing his sword. His footmen give a hearty cheer and charge toward the village, their knights flying before them. Orlando is left ignored, yelling after the fools. Other knights look ready to join Blaise in his charge, and their footmen looked confused.

>Torches were being set and flung onto hatch roofs. Dagger drawn and men gutted in the street. The peasants hadn't even time to flee. Blaise came in with a long axe in hand, laying into any passing figure from horse back. Even from a distance you could hear his blood drunk laugh.

>You saw one knight and two men-at-arms grab a young girl and drag her into an unlit building. A boy tried to race after her but was stopped dead by a spear. It was carnage, the fire was spreading from roof to roof and the men reveled in it like they were drunk at a feast day.

>Blaise took a brand and lobbed it over hand into a central building. When a young boy tried to flee the smoking building he brought his horse around to kick the child, and proceeded to trample him into pieces, all the while laughing.

>The carnage was soon running its course, and you watched Blaise's men divvy up looted foodstuffs and the meager goods of the village. It seemed he now held command over the men down there.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, and you sighed as you sank into the hot bath.

It was a one person tub, set up in a chamber off your bedroom. In the Queen's wing of the palace. You felt a slight itch as the dirt was rubbed off your back, your old clothes stinking in the corner. A clean set, your best, would be lain out waiting upon the bedside.

You did not just sigh for the pleasant heat of the water, but for the company. Ioveta pealed the dirt from your back with a huff and a hard scrubber. She was red, for the sight of you lying naked in the wood tub, and the heat rising from the water. It caused her hair to curl every so slightly 'round her brow and cheeks.

She had a set of scissors lain out for when the bath was done, and some razors and tweezers as well.

You had asked for a barber or some servant, but she had insisted upon tending you herself, and not even her sisters could convince her otherwise.

"You've lost some muscle," she sighed, a hint of disappointment in her voice as she scrubbed your shoulders, round to your chest. She was wet up to her elbow, dressed in her novice dress so as not to ruin any clothes of worth.

"I'll get it back," you said, flexing a bicep.

She lost the scrubber in the water, and just ran her hands across your chest. She had a smile upon her face, and kissed you on the ear.

"Must you really shave the beard?" she asked, brushing it with the back of her fingers.

You splash some water and laugh. "I'm sorry, but I must. Fashion demands it!" And the damned thing itched. You didn't quite see the appeal. She sighed, and simply got to the business of cleaning out your hair with soap and comb, lathing it with sweet smelling ointments. By the time she was done you were scrubbed pink, and felt a slight itch across your skin.

When you pulled yourself out of the tub Ioveta watched with towel waiting, face quite red. She helped you dry, and worked a little shyly across your back and front. She still blushed when she dried you down below.

"I really can do this myself," you said.

"I must learn," she said, "A good wife tends to her husband." Then she sat you down upon the waiting chair, took up a pair of scissors and began to clip. She took away large chunks, fussing carefully, and then she shaved your beard away as well. She near cut you open across the cheek as she smoothed the hair away, her hands were not quite steady, but soon enough you were done and smooth as the day you were born.

She dabbed at a small spot of blood on your chin. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she fussed, brows crinkled, "I'm really just not, God in heaven." She set the blade aside, her hands trembling. She seemed frightened.

"What is it?" you asked.

She smoothed her skirts. "All my life I have been preparing for the church," she said, "And now I-I'm preparing to be a woman and I don't know what to do, how to do it right."

>pull her into your lap and kiss her
>>
You take her by the hand and squeeze it. "You'll do well," you said, "Better. You'll be amazing."

She frowned and twisted away a tad at your words. You gave a small laugh and pulled her by the hand. She gave a small 'huh!' of surprise as you brought her onto your bare lap. You kissed her soundly upon the mouth, and it takes her a moment to kiss you back. "You'll do well, Ioveta," you said, kissing her upon the neck, "Stop worrying so much."

She giggled and held your head against her neck, feeling your tongue upon her flesh. You feel her breathing hard against you, twine her fingers through your new cut hair. "I guess I do worry," she said with a small laugh. She pulled your head away from where it mussed at her neck. She kissed you on the brow, and then the nose, and finally the mouth. It was a light kiss full of laughter.

"You're a fine a woman as there is," you said, and she laughed and blushed and kissed you again.

When all was settled you came into your chambers, admired the spread out cloth. She picked up a tunic and held it against your chest, spread it out. "If only it were decent for a man to be bare chested," she sighed, lowering the shirt to down your waist and trailing a finger across your chest.

You grinned as you pulled the hose on. "You fill that well," she said, skipping back. She laughed. "All these things I'd dare not say a year ago, just tumbling from my mouth." She was red cheeked and smiling, sighing as you dressed. "I wish to be wed already," she said and lay back upon the bed.

It sent a sudden chill down your spine.

Even if you survived this court, a wedding might not be possible. She was princess, and you were a landless knight.

Still the way she lay and eyed you from the bed, a little bit the shy novice but something else as well beneath, could not keep your thoughts sober.

"You fill them very well," she said, blushing and giggling.

You keep to your feet, though it left you sore to do so. Ioveta sighed and flicked a foot toward you before sitting up.

"The trial day after next," you said, "I must prepare for it. As much as I'd like to do other things...."

Ioveta smiled and stood. "I wouldn't worry," she said, brushing back her hair, "Sister has it in hand. She is speaking with Count Hugh and Pons about it now. They'll have it in hand, they've the best legal minds in the kingdom at their disposal."

"But I don't," you said, "And I know next to nothing about the courts of Jerusalem."

"Well," she came before you, wrapped her hands about your hips, "Usually one of your station would be tried in a lower court, but since you are being tried in conjunction with men of higher standing you have become very lucky. You get to stand at the High Court. It's more a tribunal than something you might be used to back in Germany, made up of the other lords of the land who listen to the evidence and pass judgement."

That was a little different, more like a peasant court.

"The High Court doesn't just sit for trials mind," she said, "They also discuss the passing of laws and the dispensation of land. It's very..." she struggled for a word.

"Parliamentarian?" you offered. She shrugged. It sounded better than being setagainst a single stranger.

"If worst comes to worst, you can always demand a trial by battle," she said, as she sunk down to her knees.

"What are you doing?" you asked as her hand moved across your cod piece.

"You worry too much," she said with a bright smile, "And there's this trick I learned the other night, in a prison cell." She slipped your hose and reached...

And then came a loud rapping upon the door, a key turning as your bedroom door was opened.

The door swung open right as she pulled you deep into her...

And in walked Hugo, who was not alone. He was chatting amiably with his companion for but a second before their eyes found the pair of you. The woman. She burned bright red for the sight of it, her dignity and proud carriage all but lost. A beautiful dark eyed woman of golden hair and honey-tan skin, who paused in your door way, a small crown around her long braided hair. The Queen herself.

"Ah!" Ioveta pulled herself away with a speed that was like the devil itself had taken a scourge to her, flying back on her buttocks and coughing as she landed.

"Shit!" you pull your hose back up but its far too late. They'd seen everything. Hugo was as red faced as the queen.

The Queen took a steadying breath, her brows raised high. "Why this room is so dim," she said in a tight voice, "Did you see some movement, dear Hugo?"

"N-no my lady," the room was in truth quite well lit.

"It would be a shame if my dearest sister, famed for her chastity, would do something so foolish at such late an hour," Melisende said, her brows lowering, "It is a good thing I trust her to keep a clear head."

"Yes, my lady," Hugo replied, adjusting his tunic.

Ioveta sat mortified, she looked like she might cry, her face red and sweating, her hair all a mess.

You stood with hands before your bulge, scrutinized by the Queen's hawkish gaze as she stepped lightly into the room.

Queen Melisende took a seat on your bedside and attempted a pleasant smile. Hugo came forth bearing something, set it on the bed. Your helm, and your sword. Queen Melisende took the sword up and drew it, marveled at it while considering you from behind it.

"It is good to see my sister has a man so well equipped," she said, and shuttered the Damascus sword back into its sheathe, "For her protection, of course." She considered you with a smile.

Her tone had a dangerous edge but also...flirtatious? It made you grin despite the fear. "Wine, your highness?" you suggest, going to the bedside table where a pitcher was kept.

"Please," she said, and took an offered cup. She drank a little. "I owe you a great deal Sir," she said, "And as such I shall choose to see and not see at my leisure."

You drank some of the wine, steadied your nerve. She was a beautiful creature this queen. It made you feel all the more awkward, like a virgin boy again. Ioveta picked herself off the floor as innocently as she could and came to stand beside you.

"You come with high regard," Melisende said, "My cousin is quite taken by you, and my sisters both vouch for you."

"But..." you say, pouring a cup for Ioveta.

"You are a landless knight, and Jerusalem needs friends," she said, "Now, my husband has a son, the Count of Maine. And I have also received a letter from John Komnenos, who has a young son too. Roger of Sicily, likewise, has a son. Roger has always thought the throne should have passed to him on father's death. Jerusalem has wed too much within it, we must start looking beyond our borders."

A Count, a King and an Emperor.

"Pray, has the Pope or Kaiser Lothair vouched a candidate yet?" you asked, keeping your tone light, "Or mayhap Prester John has appeared from the wilderness as well."

Melisende smiled at that jest, drank her wine.

"You see where it is," she said, "You will not be punished, no matter what Fulk wants, but I do not think you can have my sister's hand as well."

"We are betrothed!" Ioveta stamped her foot, face red and angry.

"Betrothals can be broken," Melisende said, a hard eye for her sister, "And you will be compensated if you wish. Count Hugh has need of a new lord for Ramla." She paused as she looked into her cup of wine.

"No!" Ioveta looked like she might leap at her sister.

Melisende half rose from the bed, a look of growing irritation on her face. "You are a princess," she said, "We do not get the luxury of marrying who we choose."

Hugo squirmed uncomfortably. You were light in the chest, in an unpleasant way. A Count, a King and an Emperor. Why should they consider you besides all that?

"Why are you doing this?" Ioveta asked, tears drawing from her eyes.

"Because I must," Melisende said, her own voice shaking. With anger perhaps. Or something else.

"If it takes me ten years or more, or just a day, ask it and I'll do it. Anything," you looked to Ioveta, who looked up to you a-whimperig, her eyes so large and face so pale. Peasantry is terrible outside of sneak attacks.
Only time I could imagine that being useful is having the peasantry revolt inside a city to sabotage the armies' food/water/equipment, and even that would be put down very fast, and unlikely to happen to boot.
If we could lure the enemy outside of the castle/city and have the peasantry revolt then, it would be another issue, that could turn a battle to our advantage even in a 1-100 battle.

"I will give you Ascelon," you said, the name of the fortress city popping into your mind. The Egyptian port that had seen many a raider loosed upon Jerusalem, the port from which your own hostage had sallied forth from. "I will give you peace."

"With what army?" she asked.

"With whatever army is bold enough to follow me," you said, "Be it knights or soldiers or peasants with sticks. A legion of Old Rome or a gang of dock rats. I'll take that city for you."

"When?" she asked, breath catching a little, propping her chin on the back of her hand.

"In two years or less it will be yours," you said.

Her chest swelled and breath caught. "Why I almost believe you," she said, her legs pressed together as she slipped off the bed. She came to stand before you, considered you along the shoulders. She had a slight flush to her face. She had her sister's dimples.

"If you can gather the support," she said, "And muster an attack," she picked some lint from your shoulder, smoothed the sleeve, "I may consider..."

Ioveta hit you from behind, grabbed you 'round the waist. "You can do it," she said, "I know you can!"

You can, maybe, you think. But the sight of Ioveta's dimpled grin, face so alive and hopeful. Yes, you could do it.

"You should rest," Melisende said, "Gather your strength for the trial." And she unlooped her littlest sister from around your waist. "Come along, Ioveta, we must have a talk of our own."

But before she could pry you apart Ioveta managed a kiss upon your chin. "I believe in you," she said, as Melisende pulled her from the room. Leaving you alone with your squire, a roused feeling in your heart. As you watched the women leave arm in arm, the sway of Queen's Melisende's hips as she closed the door, that was not the only thing 'roused'.

Yeah. We're not realistically going to be able to pull off a siege against a hardened position. We'll need some naval expertise, to harass shipping heading into and out of the port, and we'll need a mobile enough group of outriders to cause havoc in the countryside around Ascalon.

In the end, we're looking at whittling them to pieces rather than crushing them decisively.

Unless we don't have to do it singlehandedly. Then we could form an alliance of the Queen's Men and do something a bit more muscular.

We are assured to win if we gain somewhere near 2000 Knights (Mounted elites) and 6000 infantry, even moreso if we manage to gain someone with high-tier INT.

In the first stages of our campaign, I'd suggest attempting to gain as many troops as possible, allowing us time to train them into actual troops. From that point, with a mildly established snowball of power, the army could act relatively independent from us under a council we can create, while we ourselves search out allies for the final stages.

We only have two years on this, we cannot afford to fuck it up.

Year 1.5: Pre-attacks, making sure their allies won't interrupt a siege, making sure we attack a proper time when the garrison is low, or exploiting circumstances to gain a favorable situation (Hostage, random, etc.), gathering the necessary resources
Year 1.7: Organizing the start of the major offensive, coordinating with the other forces to make sure we act in union.
Year 2: Start the attack.

You had a little trouble sleeping that night, plagued by lascivious dreams of blonde crowned women with flashing dark eyes. You tossed and turned but you did get rest, the soft bed a better respite than the hard cell floor with its straw and thin pallet. When you awoke it was to Hugo waiting with a grin. He had you fixed with a sword at your hip, the first time you'd held a weapon in what felt like an age. You had a day left until your trial, and for now you had secured something like freedom, though you were restricted to the grounds of the Tower of David.

You saw little of Ioveta, and when you asked Hugo simply said the queen had her in confidence, and would not be drawn to release her.

You paced the palace grounds, keen to just have the whole business done with, mind filled with thoughts of Ascelon and the trial. Your co-conpirators were in evidence. Count Pons and his son Raymond were speaking amiably with Prince Elias. You caught Raymond's wink for Hugo as you passed. Count Hugh kept with Lord Gerard and Sir Joyce, gripping the Templar by the shoulder, old companions parted for a time.

"Such a shame what happened to Baldwin, with no son to fill his seat," Hugh said, "I'll be hard pressed to find a man worthy to replace him."

"Aye m'lord," Joyce replied, but he had a funny glare for you and your squire.

When Hugh say you he smiled and offered a hand.

"Wilhelm, good to see again my friend," he said, taking it up and giving it a pump, "How have you been treated?"

You forced a smile. It could have been worse. Lord Gerard offers you a friendly nod. Count Hugh wears a very pleased grin on his face.

"How do you think the trial will go?" you asked.

Hugh shrugged. "I am not worried over much. Who speaks against us?" he flicked a finger and you followed its trail. Orlando stood with a straight backed man, the Lord of Caesarea, and Joscelin of Edessa beside him. "The faithless and the fickle," he said.

Gerard nodded as well. "With so few opponents against us, we are sure a victory in the court."

Hugh took you by the shoulder. "I must thank you for your help in all this," he said, "For keeping with us when you had little cause. And for warning us of the faithless."

"It was no problem," you said, "Saving myself beside you."

Hugh laughed and slapped a knee. "Better to hang together and have good company at the gallows," he said, "But you have done me a good service, and I'd do you a good service in turn. That is, take you into my service. I heard you have little interest in Ramla, but surely I can tempt you with my sister's hand as well. She's a girl of sixteen, very pretty. And I am childless, my wife an old woman."

"That's my mother you speak of," Gerard chided.

Hugh nodded. "A fine woman, but she's no children left to give. You could marry my sister, take up the lordship of Ramla, and your son with her could be the next Count of Jaffa. What do you think?" He squeezed tight on your shoulder, smile very wide.

"It is too early to speak on future matters," you said, "The days ahead or not so clear, and I'm not so certain of my fortune to speak."

"A consideration to be sure," Hugh said, and draws back his hand, "But after the trial I will want an answer."

"You'll have one," you said, though knew it not one that he would like. Hugh had been very generous with you. To turn down so large an offer did not sit well. But your heart and mind were set on another task.

He smiled and cupped the side of your face. "I do like you Wilhelm, best of luck and keep a strong heart," he said, before withdrawing his hand and strutting away.

You gave a heavy sigh. Perhaps it was the smart thing to take Hugh's offer, but none had accused you of an over abundance of intelligence. And fortune was won by the bold, and that was one thing you had never lacked.

Hugo kept only half an eye on you, the rest on glowering Sir Joyce. What had passed between them, to leave them like strange dogs in a baiting pit?

You had the day and the trial on the morrow.

Shatranj with Hugo

>>35640162
Sand. We can do things with Sand. That may be a little hard however....

Akin to that battle, it may be best to lure them out, then attack them before they're prepared.

Flanking attacks would be useful, which could be performed with the forest, but they'll likely be expecting it. We could attempt a fire attack on the forest when feigning retreat, setting it alight to split their forces and disorient them.

That still leaves a siege though, which would be almost impossible without the right backing. Which means we will need agents inside the walls if we're going with the lure. It may be better to try infiltration, but that brings up a whole host of problems even on that stage.

Agh, I need to get a grip on what troops we'll be having.

Lying isn't beneath us, especially to those who are our enemies. As it is, the Queen has a guarantee for two years until Iovetta is married, in that time we have to make as many friends as possible. Even if that means we lie, cheat and gamble our way to victory.

You decide to take some air in the garden, and bring with you your shatranj set. It had been some time since your last game. You set it on a table and take a seat, offering the other to Hugo.

"You must have some stories to tell, little brother," you said as you assembled the pieces.

"Some," he said, and coughed. A girl had walked past, a pretty little thing of around twelve or thirteen years. She went up to Sir Joyce and gave him a kiss on the cheek and a flower. Hugo's attention returned to the pieces, while you raise a brow.

"How are our friends?" you asked.

"Well," the boy was monosyllabic today.

"Come on, talk to me Hugo, I've been cooped up so long," you leaned over the table, "Speak freely with me." Your eyes dart to the girl and you make a suggestive motion. Hugo blushes but nods, and you laugh. "Good job," you squeeze his shoulder, "Good job. She's a pretty little thing too."

Hugo grins through his blush.

You could use a woman. You wanted Ioveta, but two years was a long time. You wanted Chihirizahd, her generous hips and pleasant hands. Well, you mostly just wanted relief. You'd never gone this long without a woman before.

You put that from your mind and eye the table.

You set the board and consider your opponent. Had Hugo ever played this game before? You instructed him on the rules, and took him through some example plays. As you move your pieces you note his hesitation to sacrifice pawns. He didn't know much by way of strategy. You consider this a valuable lesson.

You take your time, and instead of ending it quickly, take all his pieces one by one by one.

Until only his king is left.

"Damn," Hugo clicked his fingers, demanding another game. It went about as well.

Some folks had come to watch you. A young knight templar and a tanned man with a cane, as well as an ancient soldier of the hospitallers.

"This pup is good," the one on the cane said.

"Wasting time on a heathen game," the old man muttered.

"The heathens have much to teach," the limping man said

When the next set was won, you looked up at them and they gave you considerate nods.

"I'm Roger," the man on a can said, "And this is the grand masters of the Knights Templar and Hospitaller respectively."

Roger of Sicily, of course. You did not know he was here. He had a fatherly air about him, a very warm smile.

"I hear you keep the company of heathens from time to time," he said, "What do you think, have they much to teach us?" He leaned on his cane.

Wilhelm already promised to deliver Ascelon in two years or less.

Reengage on the promise and lose all credibility with the Queen and all her sisters. Basically you expose yourselves as the scoundrels they suspect you of being.

Marry Hugo's sister and we can't get Iovetta since you can't really divorce his sister. Plus again lose credibility with Queen and her sisters, and then piss off Hugo if you want to divorce her later on.

Honestly, our path is basically set in stone now. If we try to reverse directions, it's going to be much worse.

"Of course," you said, because of course they did, "There is much to learn from anyone who is willing to teach. And from your enemies even more so. The only way to beat a man is to know him. And it's the only way to rule him as well."

Roger tapped his cane. "Well said," he said, "And very true. Myself I rule a population of Moor and Christian alike. And have made Sicily a crown jewel of the Mediterranean as a result. I fought the Moor and beat him, and now I rule him. And they are an obedient people should you know their ways."

"You are half a Muslim Roger," Archamboud of the Hospitallers said, though it was with some affection, "Come back to Christ!"

Roger just gave a playful sneer. "I trust the Moor above the Greek, though they are supposedly Christian, and have been less vexed by Egypt than by the petty republics of Italy."

"So you would make common cause with a Muslim?" du Poy asked.

Roger nodded. "If I had to. As the kings of Jerusalem have done so in the past. But do not mistake me, the Moslem has no greater foe than I, as my conquests have shown it. But in peace when they are cowed, why not extend some olive branch and learn from them, as the Romans did from their captured subjects?"

"I would say you are a fool," Du Poy said, "But only make myself a hypocrite. Truly, my personal physician is a Muslim."

"Exactly!" Roger said, and then he turned back to you. "I think you an interesting man Sir Wilhelm, and we are well met. Please, take the time to visit Sicily if you please, and see what I have built. It may surprise you."

"I may, one day," you said, and Roger grinned as he hobbled away.

Lord Gerard you spy in conversation with the straight backed man who had kept Orlando company, the Lord of Caesarea. As you approach Gerard waves to you.

"Wilhelm, meet my twin brother Walter," he said, patting the man on the arm. They were nothing at all alike. Gerard was, to put it bluntly, an ugly man. Walter was taller, strong limbed and square jawed. Perhaps they shared a hint of the brow and cast of the eye, but otherwise not much resemblance for siblings, least of all twins.

"Well met," but he did not speak with much good nature.

"It is good to see you again Lord Gerard," you said, and he gave his strange cold smile.

"You did some service to me, the start of the year. Rooted out some bandits. You've proven yourself a useful man to many," he said with a dip of his head.

"The trial is tomorrow," you said.

"My brother is a fool to make cause with Count Hugh," Walter said, "Not least because he dishonours our mother. He fucks the queen and all the court knows it."

"He does no such thing," Gerard replied with some quick fire.

"We shall see," Walter said, and took himself from your company.

Gerard grumbled. "Stubborn oaf, what matters where Hugh sticks his prick?" then he looked back to you, his good humour lost, "What exactly do you want Koblenz?"

"I thought we might talk about the future a little," you said, "And a task that might be beneficial to both of us."

"Oh?" Gerard's owlish cast rose, "Well, as a fellow of a certain time and place, I'm at least obliged to listen." You took to some place private, and spoke a little. Gerard nodded, but near laughed at the task. "Your mind is so close to ours, it was right to take you in," he said, "We've all dreamed of taking that city. That you mean to do it in two years? That is the trick."

He considered you, and then considered the darkening sky. "I've a son who needs blooding. By the time two years draws, he would be seventeen. If he could earn his spurs, truly earn them, this would be such an endeavor to do it."

"I think you will find, among the men of Jaffa and Sidon at least, good cause," he said, "The only one of us who may think different is Tripoli, for he fears the Turk most. I cannot speak for my brother and those in the king's faction."

Hmm. So it seems you could count on Hugh and Gerard to support your action against the Muslim fortress. That was something at least. Two years was a long time, perhaps time enough to rally others to your cause.

You bid Lord Gerard a good evening and retire to bed. Tomorrow would be the trial, come at last.

>>
>>35641749

There's difference between being the brother of a traitor and the actual traitor.

Hugo had already done two services to the King and had fought under him when he had a chance to stab him. That earned some trust and goodwill. The fact that he was much younger probably played a part as well.

The situation with Wilhelm is much different. Fulk is on the edge, we know that he's a bit paranoid from the Princesses and Adelhide. He's probably suspicious of Baldwin's death from "illness". It's just not a good comparison.
>>
>>35641830

Which basically means we don't really need the Lordship for manpower since the Lord of Ramla is directly under Hugh anyway.
>>
You awoke late to the urgent hand of your squire. A palace servant had lain out your clothes, and Hugo and she dressed you quickly.

"You slept long," he said, "And the trial is about to begin!" You hadn't time for even a small fruit, so hurried were you out the door.

The trial would be held in a seating chamber, for all the lords and lordlings that had assembled. Your party was seated separate to the king, who took up the largest chair, not quite a throne. You were seated beside Raymond of Tripoli, who grinned at you, offered you a date. You plucked it from his palm and swallowed. It did little to ease your roaring belly.

"We are assembled to judge a charge of conspiracy against the king," an old man said. Pagan of Oultrejordan, the king's former butler. "In essence, treason, as well as a lesser charge of abduction of a royal princess. Those who stand accused sit yonder." You all stood so as to be seen, and a mutter broke out among the assembled lords. You spied Orlando seated with Prince Elias and Walter of Caesarea.

Hugh just grinned at the affair, tapping his sword against his chair leg. He even whistled briefly, so small was his concern. It made Fulk glower, and troubled you some.

"As witness we have Orlando, formerly of Sidon," the old man said, "And a written testimony of the Late Lord Baldwin, God rest his soul and Jesus keep him, placing names and intentions to this band of conspirators."

"Who shall speak for your party?" Lord Pagan asked, "What do you say to these accusations?"

You saw Orlando's face fall as you pointed him out. "I name him a false-friend and oath-breaker, liar without shame. The lowest dog I have ever met." You saw him recoil, and the other lords recoil from around him. His face was pale and eye pricked with tears.

Then you round on your fellows. "'Tis true on one measure we met. I stand witness to it. We met to discuss the security of the roads. Thrice I was attacked travelling across this realm, losing a good friend along the way. A true friend. No doubt many others seated here can share that story. We met and made common cause, as the knights of old did. To increase our eyes upon the road, to shelter pilgrims and gentle Christianfolk. Never was the king mentioned but in passing.

If that is all to make a conspiracy, I saw judge the Poor Brothers of St John guilty before you cast stones at lords simply looking to uphold their obligation and duty."

A nod came from du Poy, the Grandmaster of that Order.

"I would only say, that if he considers discussing the safety of his people a conspiracy, what kind of king is King Fulk?" you said, "What kind of man leaps upon good subjects, well-liked men like Hugh of Jaffa, based on the words of liars?"

You looked over the king, who glowered at you.

"What kind of king?" you asked, "Locks up the man who had escorted his sister-in-law safely through Saracen hordes, protected her body and spirit from those less high minded?"

The mutters were growing, heads were nodding.

"What kind of king," you asked, "What kind of king holds such distrust in his heart for his queen, that he would suggest her hand was behind this elaborate farce? Is she not the true born daughter of Baldwin? Where you not there when she was dubbed and named his true born heir?"

"What kind of king takes into his household dishonoured dogs like Orlando of Sidon? What kind of king takes your land and gives it to foreign born men, tramples on your sovereign rights? What kind of king?"

"No kind of king!" you did not see who said it.

"No kind of king!" the call was carried forth, William of Bures the old constable stood up, shaking his fist, "He is right. Baldwin loved Hugh, and he and Melisende are like brother and sister, Hugh was Baldwin's son of spirit if not flesh. I knew them well as children, and knew their father too. King Fulk is no kind of king!"

"King Fulk is no kind of king!"

"No King!" Hugh said, "The Queen!"

"The Queen! The Queen!" young lordlings roared, "Count Hugh and Queen Melisende!"

It looked on the verge of riot. The king's Frenchmen drew around him, the Prince and Lord Walter, hands to their swords.

"You've damned us all," Fulk said to you, "Damned us all to the Saracen."

But he could not stop the carried tied. "Not Guilty!" they all agreed, and even the old butler-turned-lord agreed. "Not Guilty. Damn King Fulk!"

You felt like electricity, you felt like magic. You felt like fucking Cicero.

And you gave the king an evil grin as your fellows crowded around you, cheering your name and grabbing at you. No, you grinned at -Fulk-, for his time as king was done.

Not at this point. This is the period where they were in steep decline, and the Crusaders spent more time fighting the Seljuqs (and losing) than fighting the Egyptians (who they nearly always defeated on the field).

Now the Egyptian Sultanate, which doesn't exist yet, that's a different story.

There are currently three caliphates running, the strongest would be the one that controls half of Spain and most of North Africa.

>In Jerusalem as well, Fulk was resented by the second generation of Jerusalem Christians who had grown up there since the First Crusade. These "natives" focused on Melisende's cousin, the popular Hugh II of Le Puiset, count of Jaffa, who was devotedly loyal to the Queen. Fulk saw Hugh as a rival, and it did not help matters when Hugh's own stepson accused him of disloyalty. In 1134, in order to expose Hugh, Fulk accused him of infidelity with Melisende. Hugh rebelled in protest. Hugh secured himself to Jaffa, and allied himself with the Muslims of Ascalon. He was able to defeat the army set against him by Fulk, but this situation could not hold. The Patriarch interceded in the conflict, perhaps at the behest of Melisende. Fulk agreed to peace and Hugh was exiled from the kingdom for three years, a lenient sentence.
>>
>>35642881
It would be nice if it were possible to go back to square one with the guy. He betrayed us, we tore what he had of his reputation to shreds but we're both still alive and he's still in service to the crown. I can even understand some of his reasoning, and were this "Crusader Quest: Orlando edition" where he was suddenly faced with "Flip on the conspiracy, save your life, reclaim your lands and hopefully the lives of your friends" or "Stay loyal but you'll all probably die, no one saw this coming and the chances of anyone rescuing you or pleading your case is abysmal" I could see many anons voting for the route Orlando took.

Sadly a rift like this is hard for people to leave in the past. Grudges and regrets stick with you for a long time even if you can rationalize it. It'd be great if they could forgive each other, go to battle together to take the promised city, each gaining renown and credibility and re-knitting their friendship while both work together to strengthen Jerusalem. But things rarely work out that well. It would be nice if they could though.

Double thread? Double thread!

Hey man how did things go at the hospital?

I picture Sodomite Heaven as a big wheel made of dudes pistoning in and out of each other with clockwork synchronicity. There's another wheel made of women using tongues. These two wheels are part of the chariot of the Sodomy God who goes looking for more wayward souls to fulfill their desires and get bigger wheels.

Good but complicated news. Still has cancer, but not as deep as they thought.

Might run in a bit.

Y'know what, this sounds like an awesome religion. Let's get all our friends and loved ones in on this!
>>

Gee, you should work on Kingdom Death with those ideas. Make the wheels cherubs and done.

Gotta sleep anyway. If thread happens, get to our prisoner, corpse and Chi. Fight no one, the nobles probably need time to reassemble a government.

Hope all goes well then.

Will be here if you run it.
