Don't forget about INSIGHT CHECKS!
It's simple! Just:
>Reply to an EsperQM™ post
>Greentext something from within that post that you want to know more about
>And (if you wish to make my life easier/get a more relevant bit of insight) ask a question or make a comment- not in greentext- below your greentext!

VOTING PROTOCOL:
>When voting, put the option you're voting for in greentext, linking back to the post you're voting towards.
>If you want to do a write-in, choose the “>Something else? (WRITE-IN!)” option, and put your write-in in greentext below it.
>If you wish to support a write-in, vote as you normally would, link back to the post containing the write-in, and include whatever it was that that particular anon... well, wrote!

FURTHERMORE, I'd prefer that you do INSIGHT CHECKS and VOTES in separate (but equal) posts!

YOU are Akari Takamichi, it is July 26th, and the whole world seems to have been plunged into a eerie calm, an unearthly peace...

But that's probably because your eardrums have been ruptured.

Everything's going smoothly.

You gave Mato a hug and passed Burning Glory to her, before sending her on her way, with the others in tow.

You kept the scary fighting-knife with you.

Nee-chan told you, once, that having a knife could change any situation in your favor.
'Always carry a knife.'

And... there's no question about it, this one isn't made for any purpose other than war. They call them 'tactical' knives, these days, and pretend that they're multi-purpose in design, but... they're not. They're multi-purpose in their functionality, as are most knives, because humans are masters of using tools in ways that they might not have been intended to be used.

But this knife is designed for one thing, and one thing only- to kill, as efficiently and easily as possible, in as many different situations as possible.

You brush your fingers over the handle.

It's a fighting-knife, made, not to fight, but to end fights.

It is, in a sense, a peacekeeper. A means to an end.

So why does it feel like it's less dangerous than you are?

Is it because it is?

You shiver as a chill runs up your lower back, goosebumps racing upwards along your spine.

The Eye of Judgment bobs up and down, as if to say, 'Chin up, Akari. You're not done, yet.'

A softness envelops you, and the strange chill diminishes somewhat. Mami's hugging you, now, and- judging by the way her mouth's moving and her sternum is vibrating- singing softly to you.

It strikes you that you've never been the colder half of a hug, before.

Does that mean Mami's warming you up?

Or were you just shivering because of something else?

Still, it's a very bizarre situation you find yourself in; riding in the back of an Anti-Skill armored personnel carrier, empty -excepting, of course, the driver, yourself, and Mami- on your way to a hospital to get your eardrums repaired, after having fought a giant ripoff of Mechagodzilla.

Which, now that you think on it, was pretty cool.
It had the eye-beams and everything.

And that screech-roar thing was remarkably effective.

Speaking of remarkably effective things...

The Eye of Judgment.

You don't even know what to think of it.

Other than that it looks uncomfortably similar to the Eye of Sauron.

Every time.

Alright, you hide it /and/ talk to it.

You're lucky, anon.

Thank 4chanX for having those little pop-up thingies.
>>
You've kept it hidden, of course. You're still entirely unsure what it even is, after all, and, in the city of science, the unknown becomes known... no matter the cost.

It's funny, isn't it?

The way tacking on those four little words makes the sentence far more... unnerving. The more you learn about this city- your home- the more uneasy you become.

Academy City: Where Espers are strengthened at all costs, and where the existence of something as amazing as magic is apparently ignored, rather than explored and understood.

It makes you sick.

The city that claims to be a bastion of scientific growth and knowledge... isn't.

It's disgusting.

Dishonest.

How can you trust this place anymore, when everything you've ever learned could well be false?

So, yes. You hid the Eye.

You deceived Anti-Skill- the law. And you'll continue to do so.

More than that, you've found yourself talking to it. Not aloud, of course- that's not exactly conducive to hiding, even if you /could/ hear.

No, you've been... thinking to it.

You told it about cold. About the absence of heat. About that chill, and how it felt. You told it about how you don't really get cold, because you're... well, /you/. You're hot.

It almost seemed to thrum as you addressed it. As if... listening. Learning.

Like it wanted to know more. Like it was interested. Curious, even.

So you told it about the seasons. Winter, especially. You told it of snow and sleet and hail, of frozen lakes and frosted windows.

You told it of icicles, and just plain ice.

You told it of molecular motion, kinetic energy, and how cold causes things to contract.

You told it of weathering- how water slips into cracks in stone, freezes, and breaks them apart.

You asked how that could work, if things got smaller when they were cold.

Wait... that... wasn't you.

The Eye thrums.

You blink a few times.

What the hell are you surprised about, anyways?

You're the one who was talking to it, after all- what'd you expect?

You sigh a little and shrug the crazy off like it's nothing- because it really isn't, considering you blew a giant robot into next week (which, in case one was wondering, would mean that its dead and broken body is floating in the vastness of space, in the location the earth was at the moment you punched it- thus, Earth probably wouldn't even be visible to it next week, hurtling through space at a bajillion miles a minute like it is) no more than an hour or two ago.

And you explain, to your own little Eye of Sau- err, Judgment, that ice crystals are abnormally spread-out, because of their peculiar structures.

[And that is why snowflakes are as they are?]

Okay, yep. It's definitely talking to you.

Its... 'voice' is distinct from your own, this time.

'Yes,' you think/reply/say, 'that's how it is, as far as I know.'

'Yes, I have... but only once.' You smile a little at the memory.

'Of course it is!' Really, now! Why wouldn't it be?

… It asked if it was a person... to apologize to you? That's... you're not sure how you should feel about that.

'It's fine.'

[Could you tell me the story, then?]

'… Sure thing.'

You made an apparently-sentient being feel so bad it questioned its own sentience in order to make sure it could apologize to you.

Telling a story about your girlfriend is the least you could do.

'Naturally,' you begin, 'it was a snow-day...'

[What's a 'snow-day'?]

>>

[So, what you're saying is, the larger form of Mato risked death by hypothermia in order to cool you down long enough to show you a snowflake?]

'It doesn't sound nearly as sweet that way as it did mine.'

[And, had this not happened, it's plausible that the two of you would have begun your relationship that much sooner.]

'Y'know, I don't even know what you are.'

[In this instance, I would say I am 'being reasonable'.]

'What are you, some kinda wise guy?'

[I am uncertain.]

'Oh, right. Sorry.'

[I have another question.]

'Oh? What is it?'

[Heat is just molecular motion. Cold is what happens when there is less molecular motion.]

You know that, but-

Technically since it would take energy to move that heat, and Espers just generate energy from nowhere, there'd be more heat in the universe afterwards than there would have been before.

>>35620798
It would move itself, if directed. Heat is kinetic energy.

>>
>>35620832
I mean, it depends on what you're talking about. On a smaller scale, sure you can just 'move it', but on a larger scale, any action at all requires energy. If you just make it happen that should still put energy into the system somehow.

But it's not really relevant to this anyways. Besides, lolPersonalReality.

Then, focus. All you have to do is...

Yes, that's it!

You feel... something.

When you open your eyes, you see...

>An odd, hazy mist.

I knew it was coming.
That's even what the option originally was.
But I still laughed.

You realize that this will be the basis for all your potential future cryoshenanigans, right?
Also, you'll have to explain how a frozen statuette of your girlfriend in a probably-somewhat-inappropriate pose got in there with you.
I just want you to be aware.
>>
>>35621665
I didn't think it would be a lot of ice, all things considered. And I'm just not a fan of the other suggestion of Black Fire, which seems pointless to me. Cold fire wouldn't really do anything that our regular fire wouldn't. Except the freezing bit, at wich point we might as well cut out the middle man.
>>
Really, guys? Ice is boring and standard for cryo powers, let's mix things up a bit!
>>
>>35621693
>ice
>standard for cryo powers
>cryo=ice

I wonder why....
What?!
I don't see what black fire would bring to the table here. I would have been okay with mist too, I guess, but I liked the Mato figure.
>>
>>35621717
I'm not quite sure what it's gonna do either, but I'm willing to bet that it's gonna be really interesting, and at the very least we're getting off the beaten path a bit.

Alright I compromise.

But I'm going to hold you responsible if the fire option isn't really interesting.

Maybe.

… Well, it's certainly interesting.

A cool, black flame, with tongues fringed in gray licking upwards, and, within the core of the thing- which seems, for some reason, to be violet; you suppose it's the equivalent of a blue flame- maybe it's the coldest, but, then again, maybe it's the least cold?

Still, the fact that there's a tiny ice sculpture of Big!Mato (who happens to be lounging in a very... aesthetically-pleasing position, much to your shame) in there is rather... well, you'd call it surprising, but, in hindsight, you should've gone into this expecting something like that.

On the plus side, you feel like you've become more like Samuel L. Jackson, made what seems to be cold fire, and can look at Mato's icy butt all you want!

On the downside, this is really edgy-looking, and Mami's waking up.

You're also feeling pretty tired.

[I can't believe that actually worked.]

Wait, what?

>YOU LITTLE SHIT.
>YOOOOUUUUUUU
>What.
>Something else? (Recommended) (Write-in!)
>>
>>35622225
>You can start getting used to that feeling.
>>
>>35622225

How does it feel compared to our regular flame?

>>
>>35622289
>1

... Different. Backwards.
It doesn't feel as... raw and powerful.
But you also feel like you don't have to sustain it, as you normally would if you were to hold a flame between your hands.
In fact, it feels more like you'd actually have to put it out intentionally.

STAY CALM AND PANIC.

You ignore the sassiest eye you've ever spoken with (well, really, you haven't spoken, but- oh, you know what you mean) and extinguish the flames, which fizzle out rather interestingly.

There's no time to watch that more carefully, though, because NOBODY can see this ice thing of Mato.

NOBODY.

So you'll-

Oh.

Oh boy.

You cup your hands around it and warm them up to approximately cookie-baking temperature, and... no, it's still there.

You've made an indestructible sculpture of your girlfriend in a compromising pose.

Out of ice.

AND YOU HAVE FIRE POWERS.

IT'S ONLY STRIKING YOU NOW HOW FREAKING CRAZY THIS IS.

Mami's eyes flutter open.

Her mouth moves.

"Is that an ice sculpture of Mato in a somewhat compromising pose?"

Of course, you can't hear her.

You stuff the statue into your pocket, and she rubs her eyes. *YAWN* "Akari-chan? Are you okay? You look like you just ran twenty feet... if you were Kyouko!" She snickers, then frowns. "Oh, shit, sorry, I forgot about your ears."

And, like some sort of trash-bag full of bricks and frozen pudding, a wave of exhaustion comes over you.

And, much like some sort of trash-bag full of bricks and frozen pudding would if it were to hit you in the face, it knocks you out... COLD.

>You are Miku, and OH GOD THAT'S A BRAIN.
>You're Kyuubey, and diplomatic relations have broken down.
>You're... someone else. (Who, and why haven't you voted for Miku's option yet? I'm just trying to pretend that I don't endorse the cyberloli thing, here! Geez.)

You are Miku Tsuruya, and you're pretty pleased with yourself.

You're mostly done with the robot body- 'mostly' meaning you've just gotta put the synthetic skin on the damn thing.

Which is WAY harder than one might think.

Still... if you don't do it now, you'll keep putting it off until-

Your stomach growls.

>TIME FOR LUNCH.
>Put the skin on the stupid robot.
>Go pick out a wig to use for the stupid robot, before you forget.

You sigh, grit your teeth, complain, and otherwise bemoan having to do it.

But you still do it.

You take the amazingly-lifelike fake person-hide in your hands, give it a stretch, and turn the naked chassis upside-down.

You smile at the thought that you'll be turning the naked chassis into a naked robot, but only briefly.

Your smile ends when you get to work.

It takes two and a half hours of pushing, pulling, swearing, tugging, and shoving, but you get the skin on- and locked in place (not that it's necessary at all, but you'll be damned if you ever have to adjust one of these things).

You're halfway through... whatever meal it is you have at this time, when the front door opens.

Mokarin greets you with the still-jarring combination of an excited hug and a monotone “GREETINGS, MOTHER.”

Naturally, you hug her back and what-not.

Fate follows her in, and you do a double-take. That's a-

Yep.

She's got the brain already.

In the proper neural setup and everything.

She's also got red splotches all over her.

You sigh and motion for her to put the case on the table.

>Point her to the shower.
>Have Mokarin show her to the shower while you go brain-inate the robot.
>Have the two of them accompany you to the workshop; brain-inate the robot.
>Have them wait here; brain-inate the robot.
