LAST EPISODE: Sachiko helped settle a family dispute.
- - -

You stare at the clock that’s high up on the wall. It’s a kerokerokeroppi brand, green and cute, and smiling.

You think you’re starting to personally resent it.

The bad news: You and the other GBs are stuck inside a mental facility.

This is what you know: There is CCTV footage of you and your partners entering into P-COC offices and leaving with something. Mae is insisting that you stole something. Yasuo has expressed his concerns that you are a danger to yourselves and others. They want to lock you up.

However, this is where things go a little off the rails. Mae was asked by both law enforcement, and P-COC brass to describe what it was that she believes was stolen. She was unable, or unwilling, to say. This has complicated things.

Secondly, P-COC Central, and Walter Peck himself, are not happy with the direction the Japanese branch has taken. The ‘Plan’ that they received from you, coupled with their ‘un-vetted, radical hiring policies’ and the fact that they’ve been keeping Peck out of the loop of all of this, has ticked him off. As a result, he’s been wrapping P-COC up in its own red tape. While he’s never unhappy to see GBs being shipped off to the asylum, he’d rather it be by his own hand or be so airtight that you’ll never see the light of day again.

As a result, he’s stating that P-COC is not pressing charges for you entering the facilities. The Ghostbusters and P-COC have had a long working relationship with each other. It’s not surprising that you’d be there. Mae, and Yasuo deny it and try to circumvent that statement, Peck and Lady Une then counter, and since they ARE their superiors…things get complicated. It’s a bureaucratic nightmare.

So, as a result, no one has any goddamn clue if you’re in trouble or not.
>>
>>35591031
However, you can be held for an observational period of 48 hours, to make sure that you aren’t a danger to yourself or others.

So you’re stuck here, looking at the damn frog clock.

This isn’t a full asylum/hospital, those they keep far from the public eye. Rather it’s a ‘medical observational/self-admittance facility,’ or some combination of those types of buzz words. You’d describe it as an emotionless, sterile, too-bright-light, kind of hell.

You’re in the large day room and can see the others.

Sato is pouring over a map of Japan. He’s got little pokemon figurines all over it and he’s moving them around.

Akira is playing ping-pong against a wall. Justing by the force of his swings it looks like he’s planning on tunneling out by breaking a hole in the wall with the ball.

Starr is on a couch, watching the TV in the corner with a look a disgusted malaise on her face.

This is not how you imagined you’d be taking your vacation.

You wander over to Sato's table and sits down. He frowns and looks up at you.

"Do you think we're better represented by a squirtle or an abra?" He asks, holding up the two little figurines. "They don't exactly have a big section here, and no ghost pokemon either."

"I take it you're trying to figure out our plan?" You ask.

"Kind of...mostly trying to see if there's any way I can make it so we get to be the ones piloting the gundam."

"I'm sorry?"

Sato sighs. "I think we may need to let someone else use the Gundam to fight the giant skeleton titan." He scratches his head. "Not like that isn't our only concern."

The thought occured to me that in the enemies plan if we leave the base, we are instantly promoted to a level 5 priority and they will launch a major assault on it.

However, what if we dressed some Pagan fighters in our uniform and had them drive out in the Yomi-1, the enemy would presume we were leaving and make their attack. Where we will be in the base ready for them.

And those in the Yomi-1 can drive back protocon-canon and Super Trap blazing.

Good thing we didn't take any of that gold, eh mates?
>>

Righto, even if we didn't know I'm always leery about taking gold, especially PKE slathered gold. Gold is just far too easy to curse.
>>

>>
>>35592957
"Use the squirtle." You say. "So...any ideas about those strike teams?"

"Yeah. Those are a bitch aren't they?" He drums his fingers. "I mean, we can suit up our PAGAN friends, and make it look like we're everywhere...and a face full of posi-slime is enough to give any yokai a second thought. But...eh. It's still a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing, using tech they barely understand, fighting a foe they know almost nothing about."

You give him a look.

"Okay. Point taken." He says. "But still...we're woefully undermanned." He points on the map. "I don't want teams smaller than four, so we're the pikachus, and the strike teams are, as best I can tell, represented by all the other involved pokemon."

It's clear that the PAGANs are outnumbered. 2 strike teams for every 1 PAGAN unit.

"You're leaving a squad at base, right?" You ask.

"Yeah." He points to one pikachu. "Also Yurei and the Vagabonds said that they'd try to help as best they can. I don't know what that means."

He sighs. "But still, we don't have enough people to cover all of Tokyo."

"What if we put the teams into pairs?" You ask.

"Maybe...but a team of four PAGANs should be able to drive off a yokai team...no idea if two can handle it."

"Are there any other people we can use to bolster our numbers?" You ask.

"There's Rini and her warren." He shrugs. "But the whole point of them paying us is to make it so they could avoid a fight. You'd have to be very convincing." Sato says.

"Anyone else?" You ask.

"Well..." Sato bites his lip. "I think...if we could break people free of the P-COC registry, we'd be golden."

"How do we do that?" You ask.

"No idea." Sato says.

Talk about >>35592846 as a viable tactic. Might not change the entire battle, but if we can secure the base that way and take out a lot of their forces.
>>
Some other ways I can imagine bolstering our forces is to add some armored vehicle complements. A team of two riding an ecto-shielded car with a turret would give them a bit more protection.

Also we could consider the use of Penal-divisions. Select some ghosts from inside the containment unit and magically bind them with a promise for their freedom if they fight for us and cause no more harm.

Not exactly the best ideas, but I'll just throw them out.

>>
>>35593513
But doesn't Tamomo as of right now literally hold the word and will of the Emperor in her hands?

As in, her having the official blessing of the emperor and power over the land through paperwork a major plot point?
>>
>>35593687
That's probably gonna be more trouble than it's worth I think.
>>
>>35593814
It's worth a shot. Central has freed ghosts to help them fight other ghosts in the past.
>>
>>35593798

It's binding the gods and many of the local experts. I'm not 100% sure what effect it would have on that suggestion.

That damn registry is the biggest problem here. The PAGAN people could do it IF they had skilled backup but she's taken all the real players off the table.

At the very least: We need to find anyone she hasn't put on the registry yet.
>>
>>35593934
Is there even anyone else? I was under the impression that Mae was pretty damn thorough aside from the embarrassments like PAGAN and the Ghostbusters.
>>
>>35593983
Who knows. Pity we didn't get a list of all those registered so we could cross check it with other paranormal experts and exorcists and psychics.

Pagan does have a substantial number of them, at least, hopefully.
>>
>>35593892
Hmmm, maybe just a few then. We certainly don't want full legions since I don't think we can either control or trust that many.
>>
>>35594019
A full legion would work if we could secure the aid of an Organizer class spirit.

For example, Central managed to capture an entire fort of armed American soldiers from various periods of history as well as accepting the willing surrender Major-General Anthony Wayne. If having saichiko go back to the Containment unit weren't so damn dangerous and we had a convincing reason for him to help us, I'd wish we could summon him and their soldires
>>
>>35593983

I have no clue. Still, there might be a few that have slipped through the cracks...maybe.

Just tossing stuff at the wall.
>>
>>35594088
Can't hurt to try I suppose.
>>
I still really do not like the idea of going back to the registry since we're already on thin ice here in the asylum. They know we have broke into it before and will likely be prepared or even expecting us to break into it again.
>>
>>35593413
>> Let's plan on talking to Rini and the rabbits.
If they're so afraid, we'll see about arming them.
>>
"Well...we're on thin ice already, but the Registry is a big problem." You say. "We break that, and Mae's got a lot more to deal with than us."

"If we can." Sato sighs. "I mean, right now my plan regarding that is 'Find the damn contracts and burn them.' I don't know if that will work, or count, but..." He shrugs.

"And we can't even get near that building." You say.

"Yeah. Assuming they're there. Although, you said Mae's very arrogant. I think she'd be the type to keep her trump cards close to her chest." Sato says. "And that place is going to be swarming with yokai on the night of the Conjunction. You'd need to be a..." He gets a thoughtful look.

"What?"

"Did we have any big plans for Kali and Gramps?" He asks.

"Protect the zone, help out the PAGANs..." You pause. "You want to send them to attack P-COC central DURING the Conjunction?"

He shrugs. "It's just an idea."

> I like it...provided we can get them to agree.

>>35594552
But this way PAGAN gets even more support. Quite a lot of it in fact.
>>
>>35594608

>>
>>35594420
> I like it...provided we can get them to agree.
It's about time they got a bigger part in the story
>>
>>35594420

> I like it...provided we can get them to agree.

We'll need to coordinate with some of those people BEFORE we get the contracts destroyed though. So they know that it's actually happening.
>>
>>35594622
We're not attacking the registry, just the vamps. We'll still be around to do all sorts of crazy shit and throw wrenches into various works.
>>
>>35594657
Really? that sounds like a major leak in information that would warn them of us
>>35594665
That makes me even more concerned of the success of freeing the registry.

We did give Yasuo our word they wouldn't stir up anymore trouble so they wouldn't be extradited to China.
>>
>>35594692

>Really? that sounds like a major leak in information that would warn them of us

Yeah, you have a point. My concern is that if we DON'T tell any of the experts what's going on...they won't be able to help even if released from the contract.
>>
>>35591031
Holy shit how am I just finding out about this quest?

Fuck /tg/ you're so great.
>>
>>35594721
But at least they won't be shooting us anymore.

And maybe seeing all the Pagan around fighting other ghosts would give them the incentive.
>>
>>35594721
Not necessarily, we just have to go out of our way to raise hell and spread the word while said contracts are being destroyed and take it from there.
>>
>>35594420
>I like it...provided we can get them to agree.
>>35594692
It's up to them if they're willing to take the risk. It wouldn't hurt to ask.

Almost a year now. Go ahead and catch up in the archives. It's well worth it.
>>
"I'm a little worried that Kali and Gramps are getting a taste for yokai blood." You say with a smile.

"Better than human blood." Sato says. "Why don't vampires feed on monsters anyway?"

You shrug. "Rarity, taste, the fact that monsters fight back."

There's a tap on your back. It's one of the orderlies.

"Your sister is here to see you." He says.

"Kaede?" You ask.

He nods.

"Go." Sato says. "I'll continue to plan." He gestures to the field of Pokemon. "The evil army of demons is NO match for our horde of pikachus! As the ancients say: A battle won with toys is a battle that can be won with men! Or something like that."

You give the orderly a smile, and hope against hope that this man isn't one of the people who will be singing your release papers.

You're lead out of the day room and into the visitor's center/cafeteria.

Chad looks well, and happy. She gives you a hug, and then admonishes you in French.

You get a table, and she sighs.

"So...I suppose this was inevitable, huh D?"

"Kindly get stuffed, K." You say. "How are things."

She shrugs. "Kudzu is having me take child care classes. She wants me to take care of the lousy parts of having a baby."

"Do you want to?" You ask.

She nods. "Money, travel, Kuzu's tutoring in languages...I can handle diapers and bottles at 2am."

"What about school?" You ask.

She shrugs. "I dunno. Next year I have to take the Central Test...but now..." She shrugs. "I'll have to think about it. And it's MY choice brother."

"Okay, okay." You say

>>
>>35594825
"How's Sachiko and the others?" You ask.

She bites her lip. "That bossy girl who runs PAGAN went into overdrive when you guys got hauled off. She's been barking orders and talking to Sana, Sachiko, Reika and Rini. Reika also called in some favors and is handing them out." She nods. "Maybe it's not...such a bad thing you guys are here."

"What?" You ask.

"Well...let's just say that maybe it's not a bad thing that you have a rock solid alibi right now." She says with a grin. "I mean, it'll avoid issues that might come with vandalization of a public statue, and other things."

You palm your face and groan. "Do I want to know?"

"For legal reasons, you probably don't." Kaede says.

"Do I NEED to know?" You ask.

"YOU need to put some trust in other people." Your sister says. "Just know that things haven't gone on hold just because you're in the funny farm...although Sachiko will NEVER let you forget this."

"Lovely." You sigh.

"Anyway..." Kaede sighs. "I'm here to give you this." She hands you the Chyme. You see Yurei smiling and waving at you from the screen and then she makes a 'ssh' motion and the screen winks out.

"Thanks...why did you bring her?" You ask.

She blinks. "Didn't...you ask for her? I got an email from your business' account. It said that I was to bring her over."

You frown. Did one of the others ask for that?

"Anyway," Kaede says. "I have something else to ask you."

"Go ahead." You say.
>>
>>35595176
"Well, Kuzu got married, and she offered to have me travel with her on her honeymoon as her PA." She bites her lip. "We'd leave tomorrow and be gone for the rest of the month."

"So you'd miss the conjunction here." You say.

She nods. "Although...I know Kuzu talked about how she was unhappy that she would miss having a chance to beat Tamamo-No-Mae again." She drums her fingers. "I...I don't know if I can pull it off. But maybe I could try and convince her to stay?"

Kuzu doesn't even need to actually fight. She just has to make it known where she is, and be seen publicly.
Mae will assume that Kuzu is here to mess with her plans and fight her, because Mae is the center of the universe so someone as powerful as Kuzu MUST be here to fight Mae.

"What?" You ask. "Why?"

"Well, firstly, they're going to be in Nagano on the 'big night' so...hopefully they'll be okay." She says.

You motion for Kaede to begin.

"Dad and Mom broke because good things happened to people who deserved them." You sister says.

"What?" You ask.

"Through no fault of their own." Kaede continues.

"Alright. Start from the top." You say.

"Dad works at a medical supply company." She says.

"Yeah. I know. They produce plastic goods and tubes and needles. All the little stuff. Tongue depressors." You say. "It's why I was slated to be a doctor, so to give the family a tighter connection to the firm."

"And because you're a decent medical student and like helping people." Kaede says.

You nod to concede the point. "That too, but Dad is works in Accounts and Receiving. He pushes paper, and never so much as steps foot inside a hospital."

"I'm getting to that point." Kaede says. "And Mom was a proper societal wife for the firm. She went to social meetings, kept house, and entertained when it was our house's turn."

"I am AWARE of our parent's job positions. They're good little cogs in the firm. But you have to admit, they weren't THAT important cogs." You say. "Not like there weren't four other husband/wife combos that did the same thing."

"Right." Your sister says. "Now shut up, because now I have to talk about some people who have nothing to do with our parents."

"What?"

"The CEO of the firm adopted a 22-year old heir into his family." Kaede says. "You didn't know about this because this was when you were trying for the Central Test and were in Examination Hell and never left your room because you were studying."

You nod. You do NOT remember those days fondly.

>Tell me the story, K.
If there's the supernatural involved, it's our duty to butt in and come down on the perpetrator with both feet.
>>
>>35595909
"Now, the CEO of the firm was at a restaurant one day, and he suffers a heart attack. He was lying on the ground, a crowd of people watching, horrified and frozen. Bystander effect. A kid from a third-rate university, who was working a job as a waiter, pushed through the line and starts performing CPR. For like nine minutes, or four minutes, or something like that. Either way, the guy saves the guy's life and probably his mental faculties as well."

You hold up a hand. "Are there any supernatural elements in this story?"

She shakes her head. "Just human pettiness and the horrific side of Japanese Corporate Culture." She sighs. "Anyway, CPR guy's story reads like a novel, orphan, bullied, worked hard, never had the money to help him keep up, and so on."

"But one day he does the heroic thing, and suddenly the universe rewards him with a new family, wealth, and a position as heir to the Firm." You say. "I've seen this story on Sachiko's soaps."

"Yup." Kaede says. "But sadly, life doesn't have a curtain." She taps her fingers. "Turns out, when you suddenly place a new heir in the kingdom, people freak out. It didn't hurt that the kid was great for business and was a good pick to run the company."

"Wait...there's no way that Dad would have been the next in line." You say.

"No, but his superior was...or at least was planning to go up." She sighs. "Some people accept the loss of ambition and move on, other people give into spite." She gives you a needling glare.

"Father's superior decided that, as retribution, he would make the Firm pay...so he intentionally set up his division to fail." Kaede says.

"How do you know all this?" You ask.

"Kuzu showed me...she's got a lot of neat tricks and she likes showing off." She says.

"Anyway, this asshole...well...you know people don't get 'fired' in Japan. They just get shown that they're not wanted. They get hammered with unreasonable deadlines, longer hours, told to redo assignments, and never get praised." Your sister says. "He did that to everyone below him. He wanted the Firm to suffer, and he knew that it would be 'rude' for someone of his level to just be fired."

"Didn't people quit?" You ask.

"A few felt they could take the shame." She sighs. "Not Dad...but...well...it sapped him. And word went around that Dad was now part of the Pariah Branch, because there had to be a REASON why all those people were being 'convinced' to leave. So...Mom became a pariah too. People stopped associating with her, and there was gossip."

"And that broke them." You say.

"Yup." Kaede says with a sigh. "Then YOUR whole thing happened...and they turned to the only people they saw as strong and connected enough to get them through this dark time."

"Grandmother and Granny."

"Yep." Kaede shrugs. "And now they're cursed."

> Alright, I agree. Take the curse off. They're just drifting in misfortune and misery. Who are we to be heaping on more? We should be the better people and give them some mercy.
> I...I don't have any opinion on this, K. Do as you will.

It was mostly the Grandmonsters that were keeping them down. Not even sure if we were right to do this, but we have to deal with things as they are now.
>>
>>35596534
Don't shift the blame off them entirely, just because their situation was shitty is not an excuse for the original crimes we cursed them for anymore than a murderer is excused for murder "because I grew up in a bad home"

Breaking the curse or keeping it there isn't going to change anything.
Dad's going to stay at a company where the section chief is going to continue to try to grind him down.
Mom's not going to change her social circle just because the curse got broken.

No. The only real solution is to remove the problem at the root.
Expose the Section Chief for what he's been doing. Shame him into committing suicide, and vindicating the members of the Pariah Branch. That is the only solution that will actually bring about real, lasting change.

They'll never get any better without an external motivator, which we have now provided.

That motivator won't do jack shit if the original external reason for them being so miserable remains there to keep grinding them into the dirt.

Kuzu has connections that she can use to have this information distributed, have internal investigations and internal audits of the Branch done.
This is eminently possible, even if she isn't there personally. That's why she has connections and money to move things.

It's just what I think, it doesn't mean it's right.
>>

>>

>but we would need some sort of evidence beyond 'oooo psychic powers' before anything would come of it.
We don't need evidence. We only need Kuzu to use her money and influence to have an internal audit of the Pariah Branch done in order to expose the problems there.

All the Internal Auditors need in order to mobilize and begin their work, is the fact that this Branch is underperforming and its shed employees without a good reason.

>>35596761
Daisuke would not let such obvious corruption go. He would do what is needed to be done in order for Justice to be meted out, no matter the cost.
>>
>>35596793
But won't that just bring more shame onto the branch and thereby bring more shame unto our parents?
>>
>>35596807
Not really, all the ire would be focused on the asshole bringing the branch down. If anything, dad would probably be commended for doing his job and suffering in silence.
>>
You frown. "Can't we just take out the other guy? The one who wrecked our folk's lives? Have Kuzu help?"

Kaede smiles at you. "It's not that simple."

"Why?" You ask. "No more jerk, our folks can get their lives back together. Voila."

"The guy is already gone." Kaede says. "His own family married into another company and he resigned on his own, and moved into a better paying position."

"Okay. Good." You say. "So, everything's back to normal?"

Your sister shakes her head. "It's not that simple. The Firm can't admit that's what happened. It would be...embarrassing." She sighs. "So...they plan to just let things go as they are. The Pariah Branch will be slowly whittled away, and then business can continue."

"So why can't Dad just quit? If there's no way out, why can't he get away from that hell?"

"Because he isn't brave." Kaede says.

"He was brave enough to marry Mom." You say.

"He had love and hormones working with him...this...he has to be willing to jump off the path into the wild." She shrugs. "He can't do that. Neither can Mom. People need something, some line that they tell themselves they can't cross. They can be hypocrites in every other parts of their lives, but if they hold on to this ONE stupid thing, then they believe that they can..." Kaede sighs and puts her head in her hands. "I don't want to cut ties to them, brother. I know you're strong, and independent, and a bit of an asshole and a failure when it comes to traditional Japanese mindset...but...I...I don't want to write my parents off."

She sighs. "I guess I already know your response, huh?"

You nod.

She nods and then hugs you. "Don't hate them. That's all I ask."

"Have fun on your vacation." You say, hugging her back.

After that meeting, you're taken to a 'group therapy' session with the others.
