Summary: You are Aldan, the Daughter of a Lord of a small village. You were chosen by the God of Ambition, Varsa, to be his Champion and to prove Varsa is the greatest God. Your goal is to amass as much power as you can, and defeat the champions of the three other Gods before they try to kill you.

Last time – After a very poor attempt to patch things over with Charles, you are hired by Count Guartene to hunt down and eliminate a pirate by the name of Blood-Black Jack and the mysterious and illegal ‘cargo’. You went to the ship and looked through the riches on board, but in doing so you allowed Jack and his First Mate to leave the ship.

You hold the book you have stolen against your chest, feeling a faint hint of energy pulsing beneath your hand. The man is starting to count slowly, giving you an opportunity to escape.

Your target, Blood-Black Jack, is gone now. He left the ship to perform some business with his first mate, and most likely whatever mysterious man was meeting with the two of them. It’s starting to creep into the afternoon, and you have until tonight to eliminate Jack before his meeting with the count. You could try to go after him, or you could peek around the Captain’s Room or the Cargo Area.

Do you
>Go after Jack

But summon our snake and send it to the captain's room to kill it he shows up there first.

Go to the Cargo Area.
>>
You decide to head to the cargo area. Your invisibility makes it easy to sneak by the guars and go to the underbelly of the ship. It’s relatively dry, though the air is dank and stuffy. The cargo seems to be divided into two different areas, one filled with small boxes wrapped in canvases and the other large barrels covered in what seems like a water-proofed sealant. You make your way over to the barrels and each one has a tag on it.

“Stayne man. 36 years old.”
“Stayne woman. 11 years old.”
“Stayne nobleman. 28 years old”

You crack open the barrels, but inside are just large chunks of meat in pickling brine. You nearly vomit as your mind puts the pieces together. These men are transporting human meat to be consumed by people in the Empire. You slam the cover shut and take a moment to recover. You are filled with the desire to destroy the ship, and put an end to this business, but you also need to find Jack and make sure he doesn’t escape.

Do you
>Head to the Captain’s Room
>Go Search for Jack
>Destroy the Ship

>Destroy the Ship
This is an abomination to all of the gods, no matter if the plan is ambitious or carried out brutally.
>>
>Destroy the ship
That shit's wrong.
>>
>>35566246
>Destroy the Ship

Its the right thing to do.
>>
The ship must be destroyed. It is an abomination to the four Gods and it is a disgusting enterprise on it’s own rights. You head back up to the second floor and find a few barrels of gunpowder that are stored near the canons. It takes some timing and effort, but you are able to spread large piles of the powder in various hidden points on the ship. You say a quick prayer for yourself and for the lives that were ended in this deplorable business before lighting up a small trail. You barely have time to get to the top deck and the ramp before the first pile lights up.

After the first one goes off, it becomes a chain reaction with more and more being triggered. You get onto the dock just as the sparks reach the rest of the barrels, blasting a huge hole in the ship. Some on the men survive, while many others suffer burns and from the screams you hear inside, some are trapped in the burning wreckage.

Guards are calling the fire brigade, and you go to recuperate around the corner. The effort and the adrenaline in your system breaks your concentration enough that your invisibility shimmers away.

The deed is done, but now your rage is centered towards the Count as much as Jack. This was the cargo he wanted protected. This is the business that he has associated himself in. And this is the crime he must be punished for.

Do you

We'll eventually need to get Jack, but the Count needs dealt with first, or he can just hire someone else.
>>
You move quickly back into the heart of the Feather District. The meeting place of Blood-Black Jack and the Count seems to be the best place, as the afternoon is starting to wear on and night will be here in just a couple of hours. It is a small shack, similar to most of the homes in the poorer neighborhoods of the Feather District. You pound on the door, and the Count is standing there in rags, a very shoddy disguise given his well-kempt appearance otherwise.

“There you are, did you-“ You don’t let him finish before you shove him inside and slam the door. In an instant, your knife is on his throat and you tell him what you found. The stewing remains of humans. People with families and lives of their own. Killed and ready to be cooked for a few rich bastards.

“No, no. The Duke said you were reliable you bitch! Listen, I can give you wealth. Power. I’ll help you get to the throne! Everyone knew you were like that when they heard about you and Edwin. Just please let me live!” He’s crying now, snot and tears streaming down his face.

Do you
>Accept his offer
>Kill him.
>>
>>35566771
>Kill him

We already destroyed the ship, so we must have some moral limits. Besides, we just messed up his business venture. We can't trust him.
>>

>Kill him

>captcha: conscience traeren
Yup, let us keep a clean conscience here.
>>
>>35566771

>>
>Kill him.
Four times.
>>
>>35566771
>>Kill him.

But tell him it might not have ended this way if he told us about the cargo when we asked. Full disclosure, bitch!
>>
He continues to beg, up to the moment where your blade digs into his throat and his blood spills out onto the floor. Your drop the corner of his shirt that you were clutching, and brush a bit of dust off of the slowly reddening cloak. The feeling of satisfaction watching him die is something to relish, but you notice a slight clinging from his coat pocket. Of course a rich man would carry money, even when he was supposed to be in disguise.

Do you
>Take the Money
>Leave it on his body

Blood-Black Jack and His First Mate will be here soon. You will have to deal with them, ever the professional even after murdering your client.

Do you
>Wait to speak with them before killing them
>Hide and kill them both as they enter.
>>
>>35566975
>Take the money

Doesn't matter where his gold is from.

Our priority right now is having the church of Varsa look into the counts affairs. This is something all the four churches can get behind. We find out who his clients are and carefully, quietly, remove them all. The other orders will likely be willing to help us with this.

They don't have to bow and scrape. Just cooperate.
>>
>>35566975
>>Take the Money
No sense in letting it go to waste, besides it might make people think it was a robbery.

>>Wait to speak with them before killing them
Let's see if this man can be "prusvaded" to use his talents in a less horrifying way.
>>
>>35567109

"I will give you one day to flee the city if you tell me everyone who you know is involved with this."
>>
You kick the body of the former Count to the side as you sit down on a chair positioned in the center of the room. The room is very sparse, only the table and few chairs as furniture, and only a lantern in the middle of it all. You rummage around in the Count’s pockets, taking 10 gold pieces and 10 silver pieces for your trouble. You play with the knife as you wait for the correct time, and eventually you hear a knock on the door. Blood-Black Jack and a large man you assume is his first mate rush inside.

“Some bastard ruined my ship I feel like the-“ they stop dead when they notice the Count’s body, and you tell them it would be foolish to run. You order them to sit, with which they comply cautiously. You tell them that you know all about their operation, and that is the reason you killed the Count. You see they have the papers with them, just like the sailor mentioned they would.

Do you
>Demand to know whom they were selling it too

>>
>>35567599

The source is obviously outside of the empire, and therefore a bit out of our reach. The buyers on the other hand can be dealt with, or at least blackmailed.

"Who are you selling it to, and who do you get it from. Cooperate, and you will walk out of this room alive. Don't, and you die."
>>
>>35567599
Demand to know who they were selling to
>>
You hold the knife out, pointing the tip at the two and demanding to know who they were selling to. Blood-Black Jack tries to resist, putting his hand down and trying to be reasonable, but you stab the knife down and pin his hand to the table. He let’s out a scream as you summon the Shadow Snake and have it wait in your sleeve. You turn to the First-Mate and ask him the same question, calmly adding on that since the knife has been used, something worse is waiting for him if he does not comply. The Captain is bleeding and trying to pull the knife out of the table and his flesh, but you embedded the knife deeply enough in the table it won’t come out with his pathetic pawing.

HE starts stammering out names, before you get tired and ask for a list, which he pulls out and gives to you. You plan on killing the Captain, there isn’t a question about that. But there is the matter of the First Mate.

Do you
>Give him a threat and send him away
>Convince him to work for you
>Kill Him as Well
>>
>>35568072
>>Convince him to work for you
We are still gathering power, allies, minions. The first mate fits the last category nicely.
>>
>>35568072
Right.
Kill the captain, first. Then turn to the first mate. "You are coming with me to the temple of Varsa. You're going to explain everything you know to the head priest, and you are going to be a guest. When everyone else involved in this is dead or wishing for death, THEN you can go free."
>>
You explain exactly what is going on right now to the First Mate. The Ship is destroyed, all the people on that list of his will be implicated in their criminal activities, both morally and religiously judged. The Ship that made their fortunes is destroyed, along with most of their money and valuable items. And the Captain will not be leaving this room alive. So you give him the choice. The First mate can either die like the dog he is, or he can be accepted into the forgiving arms of the Gods and serve Varsa to make up for his crimes. It takes very little convincing to get him to say yes. He hands over the papers quickly, a list of all the people who partook in his ‘business’. Some names sound too familiar, given your aristocratic knowledge, and it disgusts you. You tell him to leave as you finish off the Captain is as painful a way as possible.

--
You emerge from the cabin, the dark cloak you took off of the Captain’s body covering your blood covered rags. You could either show these to the High Priest and allow him to take charge, or go to the Capital and show these to the head of the Guards or the Emperor’s himself. You have the First Mate to Prove your story.

Do you

You push the First Mate, who tells you his name is Sven, in the direction of the temple. It’s practically at knife point, but he doesn’t try to resist much
Once safely inside the inner part of the temple, you demand to see the High Priest. He comes out, obviously woken from deep sleep, you didn’t even notice that it was night. You’d become consumed in what was happening that the passage of time meant nothing to you.

The three of you make your way into the High Priests quarters and you throw the papers on his bed. It’s at this point that your blood soaked clothes are revealed, but you demand he read them first. He starts reading them aloud, but his voice quiets when he realizes what he is seeing. Too Many nobles, men and women alike, requesting particular types of people to consume. You balk at the amount that specifically ask for children.

The High Priest closes his eyes and promises to assemble the Four High Priests in the City, to dispatch a note to the Head of the Church of Varsa Tomorrow, and to contact the Emperor. Sven is taken to a room and locked inside, leaving you on your own. You feel like your nerves are still on end, unsure what to do with yourself.

You decide to examine the book. After prying with the strange lock, you feel the energy flow through you as the tome’s pages crackle beneath your fingers. You look down at the words to see….gibberish. Well, not exactly gibberish, but you have no idea how to read the book. And the magic from the symbols is resistant to your attempts at drawing it into yourself. There is something at work here that you aren’t able to fully understand. But you will need to figure it out another time. You are exhausted, and you call it a day, curling into your bed and letting the oblivion of sleep come over you.

---

Varsa is sitting on his throne, not looking please. The dream is hazy, but he looks over at you.

“If I may suggest, little one….” He starts fading away, only a brief glimpse for now. “Keep a better eye on your minions…”

You search for Charles, and find him again tucked away in a corner of the library, but he looks different then the boy you met a few weeks ago. He looks gaunt, pale, like he hasn’t eaten or slept in days. He barely addressed you with a nod before going back to his work. You try to prod him for more answers, but he doesn’t seem keen on talking to you.

“Just leave me alone. I don’t care anymore.” He says, though the tone sounds stern the lips it falls from look like there is hardly enough blood to make them move. When you try to touch his arm, the skin feels like paper. You're less worried about him being a danger to you and more worried about him being a danger to himself. You’re concerned for him, and unsure what to do.

You try to talk to him, tell him that you were being a bad friend the other day, and that there is so much happening and so much going wrong lately that you acted without thinking. But he doesn’t want to hear it.

“It’s fine. I understand. I’m not really upset.” He says somberly. “I’ll go to the infirmary, again. But I went yesterday, and they couldn’t find anything. I guess I’m just a little sick.” He says. You try to push him more, but he doesn’t do anything. He just scratches idly at his neck as he continues his job of putting the books away.

You tell the priest to make sure that Charles is taken to the infirmary and is given exemplary care. You also inform him to go into your room and take a book to him, hoping that he will be able to make something of the strange writing.

You go to the main worship area, bowing to Varsa’s statue before turning to the High Priest. His robes are no longer the regular black, but black with golden inlays and a golden sash with the intricate circular symbol of the Four Gods at the center. When you inquire about his robes, he responds that they are the official robes to be worn when attending a Council with the other priests. You are being taken to the Emperor’s Hold. A carriage, simple yet elegant, waits for the two of you out front.

---
You arrive, when you see other carriages similar standing wait by the very front entrance. A servant waves you inside and you are escorted to a room where 2 older women and the Emperor sits at a table. One woman, with very white hair, is wearing the White Robes of Morra, while the other sits perfectly at attention, wearing steely robes of Rosk.

Let's be professional here.

Now, during OP's absence, I gave this some thought. What needs to happen is we cannot strike until we are ready.

The Guards will arrange for some of the nobles on this list, those who we can, to be arrested on small charges. "It's just a formality" should fall from the lips of the officers making every arrest. Once we have them secured in a cell, nothing is to be held back. Information will be extracted by any means necessary, magic if Morra's priests can handle it, the emperor's own interrogators if they can't. If the emperor's men come up empty, Varsa will step in. Any leads, we shall investigate.

If they crack wise of this, then the followers of Rosk will step in to assist the guard. It could easily devolve into a war against mercenaries, given how many aristocrats there are, and while violent conflict should be avoided, sometimes it is necessary.

Investigations are to be conducted by the order of Varsa because, no offense, the Guard does its job for pay, and therefor someone among them can be bought. Buying a holy man is significantly less likely, especially on a matter such as this.

Once we are certain we have them all, and if we have done this quietly enough, then everyone, the four orders and the guards, will lead a single inquisition upon the homes of any suspects that remain. We must be certain this is everyone before we make such a move.
>>
>>35576392
I'm more worried about eliminating the other three champions. This is something for the guards to handle, let's get back to the task at hand.
>>
You and the High Priest sit quietly at your designated area. Your eyes wander, but the other church leaders refuse to meet your eyes. In a few minutes, the Hema priest arrives and the Emperor moves to stand.

“You are all here. Good. Now we can get this nasty business out of the way. It has come to my attention that a terrible act has been committed in the Capital City. Now, I may not be a pious man, but I pray to the Gods for guidance and strength. I adhere to the tenants, I say my prayers. And most certainly, I stand where I can against the Greater Sins. This includes the consumption of human flesh.” He looks at the High Priest of Varsa, who produced the documents you gave him last night.

“This, combined with the testimony of the man known as Sven Aldersens and others once aboard the Red Mark, confirm the statement. There are nobles and wealthy merchants within the city that are partaking in the consumption of flesh of captives from the war effort in Stayne. I need not tell you how abominable it is, that both in the ranks of my army, and in the city I make the center of this glorious Empire, such acts can not only occur, but stagnate into a pool of filth.” His voice is calm, but you can see pure rage in his lowered eyes. They burn brighter than any many you’ve seen before in your life. This is the will of an Emperor at work.

“Now, as is traditional in cases regarding the Greater Sins, I have called you four here as witness and as consuls as to how best to approach this prolific problem. Lady Aldan is also here as a guest and as the one who discovered these. How the information was obtained is not important, what is important is that this get dealt with as soon as possible.”

“So, Speakers for the Gods. Tell me…” He leans forward. “How do we fix this?”

Do you suggest
>A full, unified assault on the Nobles and their assets
>Quiet removal of the individual nobles
>Bringing the nobles in under arrest and legal trial.
>>
>>35576392
I might have the order of book and the order of scepter mixed up. The scepter order (I just don't remember the name) is to act as a publicist. When this all comes to light, the populace could very well panic. Keep the people happy and in worship of their gods is the duty of the Scepter.

The book order, meanwhile, is to delve into whatever archives they can. While interrogations can yield promising leads, the faster way is to track the sales. It is doubtful Blood-Back Jack is the sole supplier for an operation this large, and if we can get lists from other...dealers...then we might just get some new names. The trick is finding out which cargo was unloaded, where, and who it was sold to. Customs records hopefully are a thing.
>>
>>35576606
Once we have the groundwork laid out, we can let it run autonomously, merely stepping in where appropriate. Being at the head of this kind of inquisition will give us PLENTY of respect. And with respect comes weight to one's words.

>>35576612
I go with >>35576392 >>35576626

Both posts are relevant. Get as many arrested quietly, interrogate by whatever means are deemed necessary, and go through customs records to make sure this entire operation is taken down in a single fell swoop, with the public becoming aware only after the fact is possible.

You and the High Priest suggest bringing the nobles in at once for a legal trial. The Priest of Morra and Hema voice their agreement, but the stern woman from the Temple of Rosk looks displeased. “You fools, do you not think that these fools prepare for such attempts? And due to the corruption of the systems in place, many I’m sure will get off without a care! The rules are clear, those that violet the Greater Sins deserve nothing less than the execution by the Gods!”

“It seems that the council has spoken.” The Emperor says, glaring down the Priest of Rosk. For a moment their eyes meet, but she turns hers away. “Plans will be made. The Guards Will mobilize and by this time tomorrow, any of these nobles still in the city will be making a home in the jail cells of the Emperor’s Dugeon. You are dismissed.” You all bow to the Emperor and begin to file out, when you are compelled to ask the Emperor a few questions. For now, it is just the two of you alone.

Look, do we or do we not want all of them dead?

You tell the High Priest to return to the temple without you, as you go back to the table and sit near the Emperor.

“What do you want?” He says, looking down at the papers. “You got your way. The names on the list will be brought in, questioned and then appropriately tried by the courts. I’m more apt to agree with the teachings of Rosk, ‘strike the enemy while their sword is sheathed’, but I listened to the council.” You ask him about Geoff and he sighs, putting the papers down.

“Oh, Geoff was found. In a little place called Resting. A troop of 20 men went to approach him and return him peacefully to Faran-Ra for questioning. Only one of those men returned alive, and only by running away as the bloodbath began. I don’t know what kind of infernal power Auron was dealing with in that boy, but he is going to have hell to pay. Are you satisfied? Now get out of here.” His voice leaves no room for discussion, and you quietly leave the room.

You are standing in the hallway, several servants looking ready and eager to lead you around. You could try to find Edwin, or you could ask around for the First Empress that you hit it off with so well many days ago.

Better if he's no involved. Also, we need to approach the followers of Rosk. get a message to Geoff that a number of nobles are being charged from cannibalism, and if any of them leave the city...make sure they don't get far.

You leave the Hold, beginning the long walk back to the Temple of Varsa. You pass some of the nobles, caught up in their whispering and little tidbits of gossip like carrions pecking at the last bit of meat on the bones on a dead animal.

The roads are busy in the mid-day sun. The weather is slowly changing now, you think. The nights getting the tiniest bit longer, the sun not quite so bright. It’s been a few weeks and already the excitement of your life has swept you away. For a moment your steps slow, and you think back to home. And if not for the slowing of steps, you’d be dead.

You see the knife fly by your face, lodging itself in the wooden post you were passing by. Your eyes move to see a figure, metal strips embedded in his flesh as though they were extensions of him. You see Geoff meet your eyes for just a moment before he disappears into the crowds and you rush back to the safety of the Temple.

((Ok, Calling it for tonight. I have a 7 hour car ride to expect tomorrow. Fuuuuun.))

good thread i guess...
honestly not sure how to feel about this one in the end

Damn, we need to start upgrading invisibility. Looks like Geoff is specializing already.

People got the wrong idea about the legal arrests.

Who says we make a move to have them eliminated after the trials?
>>
>>35578099
I'm pretty sure they're gonna be executed. The Emperor seemed pissed.
>>
>>35578124
You heard the Rosk guy. Some of them might run, some of them might get away. It requires evidence, and frankly the evidence we have can be called 'lies and slander'. And then where are we?

We should have investigated this.
>>
>>35578162
We burned the fucking ship. The ship with the evidence on it.
>>
>>35578162
On the plus side we're now free to go "liberate" magical artifacts from various people instead of being bogged down in assassination targets.
>>
>>35578240
EXACTLY

We might not be able to kill them using the legal system. I'm just suggesting having contingencies in place.
>>
>>35578240
>tfw when I wasn't here to vote

Probably would have voted to take it over and used the contents to blackmail various nobles.
