You hold even stiller as the demon searches the darkness for you – if he keeps this up, you’re not going to remain hidden for long. You need to take action.

You meet the demon’s oddly feline gaze with your own, and blast him with terror. (-2 PP: 26/32) (+2 Stress: 22/100) The hyena/lobster-looking stygian bristles at the unbidden impression and takes a step away from you. His headless friend shuffles up to his side and glances in your direction. Of course, Barrel-chest doesn’t see anything, if he even has eyes. “Tlenian?”
>>
>>35457178

The stygian shies away from your position. “I just remembered something, eh,” he says shakily, his voice coming out in a low growl. But you can feel the poorly suppressed panic within him.

Barrel-chest slaps him upside the head with his free hand. “Renender sonething when you don’t hass a jod to do,” he says, irritated, his speech sounding weirdly stilted. He shuffles on the way to the tent, readjusting the body bag over his shoulder. “You’re not on the Styx anynore – Njoz doesn’t take those kinds.”

“No, he doesn’t,” Tlenian replies, following after him. He walks half-sideways, so as to keep an eye on where you lurk. While he hasn’t actually seen you, he certainly knows something is wrong. Time is ticking.

You can see a few shadows moving around within the well-lit tent where the two demons are headed. Maybe one of them is Iptaph?

This is a pretty solid plan.
It's large enough and clearly from halth.
Just dropping it and having it lead people away from the tent would work.
>>
>>35458711
My understanding of Summoning is that Sierra can spend the PP to ready a summon while still leaving it incorporeal. My intention was to spend the points now to have the Shalbaan as a back up in case everything goes to shit.
>>
Once the Stygians get into the tent and out of sight, you slip out of your hiding spot and follow, moving low and fast. You’re careful to keep an eye on things through the eyes of Monster, not wanting to be surprised again by another demon. You creep up to the entrance of the brightly lit tent and, careful to remain out of sight, peek inside.

The tent is full of blindingly bright white lights. Everything inside is thrown into harsh contrast with itself. Stacks of blue coolers form a wall along the back of the tent, each labeled in careful detail in a language that looks like Latin.

The tent is further subdivided into ‘rooms’ of transparent plastic curtains hanging from the ceiling. In the very center of the room, surrounded by standing electric floodlights, lies the centerpiece of the whole space. A metal table – more like a slab, actually - is set up in the middle of the room. Racks and chests full of surgical implements and tools surround this table. Some of the tools are precise, like a tiny stand displaying varying types of scalpels, while others – power drills, circular saws, and claw hammers – would be more at home in a mechanic’s garage.

Besides IV stands and big pieces of machinery the purpose of which you can only guess, the whole room has a meticulous cleanliness to it. The smell of bleach, soap, and disinfectant fills the air, burning out every other scent in the place.
>>
>>35458989

Barrel-chest, followed closely behind by Tlenian, pushes aside the plastic curtains around the central slab and walks in with his load.

Tlenian’s eyestalks twitch. “Niro!” he hisses. “Something’s here.”

“This adout what you renendered?” Barrel-chest asks impatiently, turning around with ponderous slowness. “Agh! Help me with this,” he says, unshouldering the human-shaped bag on his shoulder.

“I saw it go into the shadows, Niro,” Tlenian continues, ignoring Barrel-chest’s request for assistance. “It was in the shadows, it was there!”

A demon in a white smock appears behind the curtain and pushes through. It’s a Nyphican, that much you know for sure. The demon has hooved feet, and is coated in shining black hair. He resembles more of a deer than a goat though, with sharp, elegant antlers, and white spots in his fur coat. Under the surgeon’s smock, he wears a jacket and a pair of jean shorts.

“What’s got him on about shadows, lowborn?” the Nyphican asks disdainfully. The Nyphican has a singer’s voice – it’s a high tenor or something, which really doesn’t match his appearance at all. (Antlers: 10 HP; 10 PP) He beckons Barrel-chest to share the load.

“Sonething he renendered,” Niro says dismissively, allowing the Nyphican to take the legs. The two demons hoist the body onto the metal slab.

Tlenian makes an angry growl and jerks a finger toward the entrance of the tent. You pull back behind cover. “Sonething – something I saw,” comes Tlenian’s voice.
>>
>>35459011

“And what did you see, Tlenchik?” asks the Nyphican, condescendingly.

You can picture Tlenian shrinking back within himself. “I didn’t see it, eh,” he says, voice trembling with fear. “It was in the shadows.”

“Hm,” says Antlers. “This sounds very important. In fact, it’s so very important that I think you should tell Mjoz. Let me fetch him, he’s right over there.”

You decide its safe again to watch, so you peek over.

The headless demon, Niro, stops him. “Mjoz has his work, let’s not troudle hin,” he says, bowing ingratiatingly before the Nyphican.

But Tlenian doesn’t seem as worried about this as his friend. He seizes on the idea immediately. “Go and fetch Mjoz, eh!”

But before Mjoz can be fetched, your earpiece radio snaps on. “SPAWNLING,” Ranthix yells, almost manic, “A HEAVILY ARMED MOTORCYCLIST BREACHED THE PERIMITER!”

You don’t have time to piece that together before he radios again.

“AND LOOK AT THAT, HE JUST WENT INSIDE. YOU HAVE TWO MINUTES.”

A moment later, a radio on the Antler’s hip barks to life, shouting a brief phrase in Heltic before switching off. The deer-demon’s expression becomes tense.

"Changing of the watch?" Niro asks, curious.

“And you know what, I'm actually on for this one," says Antlers. He takes off his smock and tosses it over the body bag . “Excuse me for a moment." He turns to leave.

"What about fetching Mjoz, eh?" Tlenian says, sounding fearful.

"Get him yourself," Antlers says. He walks away.

>What do you do?
>>
>>35459087
Well, I'm pretty sure Antlers is our target. He sounds and acts like the boss and matches the description of being a greasy Nyphican. Doublecheck with our seeking totem, follow after him, look for a good point to ambush and pounce on the motherfucker.

My suggestion is to use Stain of Sin on Zelathis, pin him to a wall through the heart, or something like that, with it, and use the sword as a channel to electrocute the fuck out of him and Hellfire him from the inside.
>>
>>35459087
Welp, looks like someone has the same idea we do. Go loud and try to take downs all these fuckers with grenades and try to find Iptaph as quickly as possible while avoiding this new player in the game.

He's part Stygian, what he actually looks like is probably a matter of debate. I think we saw a picture of his mortal glamour, which had a beer gut and greasy hair, but I don't think we have more info than that.
>>
>>35460060
Glamours reflect the truth to some extent.
>>
You leave the tent and circle around as quickly as possible. Shiny goatman with the antlers seems like a dead ringer for Iptaph, although he does look fatter when he’s in human disguise. You’ve got this in the bag – and none too soon, too, what with whoever the hell it is coming in hot. Not that you have a problem with killing everybody in this place, it’s just that the timing is unfortunate for your purposes.

Anyway, you get around to the other side of the tent, avoiding the gaze of a demon sitting on a box and carving shapes into the wood. You come to the corner at the same time Iptaph comes out the back of the tent. As soon as he’s clear of the tent, he bursts into a run and pulls his radio out. You hurry to follow without being seen as the demon starts barking a number of orders into the radio, none of which you understand.

He’s heading toward the back, where there’s a door and a darkened window probably to some manager’s office. Hastily, you pull out Crowther’s seeking totem just to be sure you’ve got the right guy. You feel it tugging toward the Nyphican as he goes out before you toward the door – probably a back door or something.

The path is clear. You’ll meet him at the door, stab him through the heart, and whoosh, slip out the back door. You draw Zelathis and rush forward with deadly intent.

But Iptaph is a little more perceptive than you gave him credit for.
>>
>>35460236

Perhaps at the slight sound of your claws on the concrete floor, he spins around and spots you mid charge. Crap! But you’re already committed – whether or not he knows you’re here won’t stop your sword from going through his heart.

Your sudden appearance has the demon long enough for you to take advantage of it. You lunge and thrust your blade through his chest. It sails through easily, like a hot knife through butter, or like a hot knife through thin air.

Wait.
>>
>>35460270

The image of the antlered demon before you flickers. You feel a presence behind you, and you spin around to meet it. Iptaph springs out from a crouch behind you. You whip your sword around to meet him, but he thrusts both palms forward, and a surge of power fills the air. A wall of force slams into you and hurls you backward and upward. Your feet leave the ground, and you sail into the wall above the door. The force bashes you against the unyielding wall and pins you there, but the shadows insulate you from serious injury. (-1 HP: 26/27)

Iptaph stands with both hands pressed forward against the air in your direction, hooves planted firmly on the ground. “Looks like you got outstepped, shadow walker,” he says, grating the words out from between clenched teeth. Muscles ripple beneath his fur, and the Nyphican pushes harder against you. Great waves of force crush you against the wall. It feels like you’re being put dogpiled by multiple football teams. It’s impossible to breathe, and your vision begins to swim. (-3 HP: 23/27) (Antlers: 8 PP)

>>3546036

If you were pushed against a corner. You're just against the wall.

Also, Monster is still flying around someplace if you need him.
>>
>>35460305
Try for a Sap Will while we sic the shalbaan on him and.

How close is he to us? Within the range of Shadow Self? If he's within SS range, we could attempt to Soul Drinker him through it.

>>35460378
Hellblaze is a passive buff to Hellfire, Fire Whip, and Hellbolt. We can't apply it to flare, and even if we could, it's an always-on passive.
>>
>>35460427
So we have shalbaan and monster run train on the nyphican while we recover ourself
>>
>>35460427
About how close is Iptaph to us right now?
>>
>>35460305
Terrorizing Glare him, summon the Shalbaan behind him if we can.

Cornerstep through the wall behind us and come at him from a different angle. Maybe shoot him with a SoS SMG.
>>
>>35460440
Would a flare just by itself kill Iptaph? Looking at the sheet, it says that Explosive Flare does round about 14 damage and Iptaph is at point blank..
>>
>>35460427

Also, unexpected business has arisen. Next post will be in one or two hours. I'll post if something terrible happens.

>>35460440

You're being held about fifteen feet in the air against a wall by magical telekinetic force. He's not within touching distance, but he is within spitting distance. You can manipulate the shadows around him.
>>
>>35460305
Either Sap Will or Terrorizing Glare as we do the shadow flippy thing that's so much fun to do where we pull his head back and slam shadows into the back of his legs so that he ends up on his back.

And summon the Shalbaan to tear his throat out and blast him with spikes.

Do you guys remember what was more effective between SW and TG? I would think that SW is harder to fight off.
>>
>>35460537
Clearly Lawnguy is suggesting we use our DEADLY VENOM to slay him.
>>
>>35460668

BITE EVERYTHING
>>
>>35460664

Sap will is stronger, but requires more time and concentration to pull off.
>>
>>35460537
Let's see, Terrorizing Glare him, maybe it'll disrupt the TK, order Monster to come from behind and claw/bite/burn his face.

He seems to need to brace himself to do this, use Shadow Grasp, grab his hooves, and pull up.

Summon the Shalbaan, Iptaph could really use a face full of spines.

>>35460664
I think SW is generally more powerful, and its effects are greater, but harder to hit with, with a limited range, and more expensive.
>>
>>35460731
Ok, that sounds to me like we should use TG then to whip something out on him to throw him off really quick and lead into another attack.

I'm still confused as too who knows what in our circle of friends.

Last thing i remember us agreeing to keep the crowthers being demons a secret, then Ranthix goes and spouts shit about maviel being a demon right in front of isaac and he wasn't even phased.

For awhile we we're kinda spymastering it up with only us being the one to know everything.

You strain to overcome the crushing power and make eye-contact with Iptaph, but the demon renews his attack, and the power is too much. Your face and horn get ground into the wall. You can’t overcome the power – you can feel your bones pushed to the verge of snapping, and it’s all you can do not to let Zelathis clatter to the ground. (-4 HP: 19/27) (+8 Stress: 30/100)

This is not good.

On the edge of panic, you call recall Monster and let Tiger out. Out of the side of your view, you see the shadows rush together and your summon leap out from the midst. Your creature lets out a metallic snarl and charges out of view, toward Iptaph. You give a pained smile and manage to irk out the words, “Go get ‘em, Tiger,” before giving up on speech.

A moment after you lose sight of the Shalbaan, the power keeping you constrained fails. You fall to the ground and the shadows catch you. It takes you a couple seconds to catch your breath and get back on your feet. When you do, you look up just in time to see Tiger brace himself to shoot a dorsal spine through Iptaph’s chest, and jets out a bony projectile with a loud crack.

Iptaph dodges in just the right way. The spine shoots right past and stabs into the wall. He slides out a short, half-circular blade from a sheath on his thigh as he goes, and snaps his arm like a whip toward Tiger.
>>
>>35465572

A wall of invisible force surges forward and catches Tiger face-on, blasting the Shalbaan backwards. The creature collides a makeshift wall of plywood, and the structure it supports collapses on top of him, burying him in debris. (Tiger: 16/20 HP)

Antlers recovers and rounds once more on you. Though he bears a long cut on a leg, the injury is superficial. (9/10 HP; 4/10 PP) He raises his oddly curved blade, and begins stalking to the side. He bellows something loudly in Heltic, loud enough to be heard anywhere in the warehouse, though doesn’t take his eyes off of you. His stance one of experience.

Tlenian and Niro appear behind him, a short run away. Once Barrel-chest gets a sight of you, he lets out a horrible shout. “Serwelken!” he screams. “Don’t let it out of sight! The lights, eseryone! Thousand hells, the lights!” The barrel-chested, headless demon pats himself down as if looking for something, but comes up empty. He turns back and dashes back into the warehouse, shouting ‘Serwelken’ over and over again.
>>
>>35465602

“I told you, the shadow!” Tlenian shouts, his eyes widening and his tiny chest-arms twitching in disarray. “Hotep, get away!” the doggish demon barks, fighting with himself over whether he should charge forward or turn tail and flee.

Iptaph – or Hotep? – ignores Tlenian. He keeps his blade trained on you, as if daring you to make a move. His eyes flick to your holster, then back to you.

Holy crap. You're fucking wasting your time here. (+5 Stress: 35/100)

>Hold on. So you’re not Iptaph?
>Tell me where your boss is, and I’ll let you walk.
>This is getting bad. A couple low-rate demons is one thing, but you don’t like your chances against a half-dozen gunmen when they come running. Time to bail.

You meet Hotep’s gaze, and show him what it means to be afraid. (+2 Stress: 32/100) (-2 PP: 24/32)

Deer man wavers and takes a step back, beginning to tremble all over. “You’re not… what are you?” he mutters, his eyes starting to bug out on you.

You make as if you’re going for your SMG.

Hotep reacts immediately, throwing a great ball of telekinetic force right at you. Except his aim is shaky, and you instinctively know where the strike is going to be before he even throws it. Fear’s made him sloppy – he’s telegraphing every move. You fling yourself to the side, easily out of the way of the main of the blast. It clips you and sends you spinning, but you lash your tail aside to keep your balance. You alight on your clawed feet, and immediately slash Zelathis up and point it at Hotep.

Static energy fills the air, tingling on your skin. You tighten your grip and will on the lightning sword, and the blade sizzles with neon purple sparks of electricity. You snicker to yourself and say, “Zap.” A bolt of lightning screeches in an arc from Zelathis to Hotep – the latter collapses in a convulsive fit, like a puppet with its strings cut.
>>
We might be able to turn this mission around if we kill Iptaph cleanly. There going to be the rumor of the Verwelken with a Shalbaan.
>>
>>35466687

Unfortunately, he’s still living. (Hotep: 6/10 HP) Fortunately, Tiger suddenly explodes from beneath the debris with a surprising bout of ferocity. He fixes his many eyes on the downed Hotep and bolts forward to exact revenge. The Nyphican hasn’t yet managed to recover when the Shalbaan leaps upon him and starts ripping with its powerful arms.

It’s surprising how easily limbs can be torn from their sockets. (Hotep: 0/10 HP) The smell of rich, savory blood fills the air. Your embarrassment is secret now, and all’s well that ends in the problem being mauled to death by a hellish fiend. (-4 stress: 28/100)

Tlenian witness all this in horror, paralyzed with sweet, sweet terror at the sight of Hotep’s grizzly and sudden death.

No, the whole point was to kill Iptaph and spread fear. People latched onto this whole "WE GOTTA BE SUPER SECRET THEY'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT IT WAS!!!" thing when that wasn't the goal or requirement at all. The plan was always to start a rumor of some Verwelken going around killing people.

And besides, someone just busted into the place, armed to the teeth, and odds are it's a demon hunter. We need to off Iptaph and bug out asap.

We can ask, and he'll happily tell us as we have a nice snack. And the taste might tell us if he's also Stygian.

Order Monster to get back to us, starting some fires on the way and looking for a good exfiltration route, or getting us eyes on Iptaph, depending on if we killed him or not.

You walk toward Tlenian, and snap at Tiger to bring you an arm. He shuffles over and hands you a torn goat arm. It’s surprisingly light – you’ve never really held a severed limb before. It’s oozing coated in blood – almost impossible to tell what it is. But you know what it is, you think to yourself, snickering uncontrollably. Snack on the go. (-2 Sanity: 94/100)

Hotap’s blood has curious, wholesome flavor to it – almost homemade, somehow. Either way it’s good enough. (+3 HP: 22/27) It doesn’t taste new, though. The blood tastes like the other Nyphicans you’ve had before.

You toss the limb to the side and sidle up to Tlenian, who by now is shaking almost uncontrollably. You hear footsteps running toward you, so you send Tiger ahead to slow them down to give you a minute to talk to the demon. “Where’s Iptaph?” you ask, using your best batman voice. Close-up, can see the wet, snottyness of Tlenian’s hyena nose. It’s kind of gross, and his body odor doesn’t help things either.

A staccato of gunfire sounds from not very far away at all, causing Tlenian to jump.

You flex your claws. “Start talking,” you demand.
>>
>>35467674
“The… the M-Master’s with the pro… p-provisions!” Tlenian stutters, his voice barely coming out as a squeak. “Outside, there’s a truck!”

Another blast of gunfire sounds. You get the sinking impression that Tiger gave his all to buy you the time for the conversation. You should probably get going.

A thunderous bang sounds from the front of warehouse, from where you came in. The gunfight starts in earnest, then. Almost incessant gunfire begins rapping against your eardrums, amplified and echoing in the enclosed space.

You spot a couple silhouettes making their way toward you through the inside of the chop-shop tent.

You wrap your tendrils around Tlenian and heave him away from you, while draining him of most of the power he has. (+7 PP: 31/32) “Start running,” you tell hyena-face. You’ll let him take his chances with the demon hunter. As for you, you take your own advice and run for the back door.

You cover maybe half the distance when you hear a shout from behind you. “Ix aggot!” comes a rough voice.

You don’t like the sound of that, and so pull all of the shadows everywhere around in behind you to block their sight and (maybe) slow any bullets they throw your way. (-4 PP: 28/32)

Short bursts of gunfire crack out behind you. Shots tear apart the walls and pepper the ground as you sprint toward safety. You remember Waldric’s shielding charm, and use up a charge to shield your torso and head from lucky hits. (Shielding Charm: ½) Your hand gets knocked backward a couple times in the few seconds you have the shield up, sending an unpleasant shock through your arm. You reach the door and slam through it, then ditch out of the line of fire of the shooters. You switch off the lights in the long hallway and keep running.

You can run fast. Hopefully you can run faster than whatever’s behind you, because you’re not turning around to look at it. You come out into a loading area kind of thing, somewhere you could drive trucks up to and load them up and unload them. There’s a dusty forklift, but otherwise everything’s barren.
>>
>>35468635

But there’s someone here. It’s an old guy with glasses and wrinkled skin. He’s standing before an open loading door, and looks out at a small back parking lot. You see a couple cars and a medium sized delivery truck, and beyond that, a frontage road, a mess of cargo containers and cranes, and then the dark waters of the bay.

The old guy wears a pair of off-green scrubs, the kind hospital nurses go around in. His loose sandals don’t really fit the medical image though, and neither does his long scraggly beard and sideburns. And there’s the thing that his scrubs sport layers of discolored splotches, stains, and streaks of various freshness. His clothes haven’t been washed in months, and you don’t want to think about the things he’s done in that time. (+3 Stress: 31/100)

A field of intangible power shimmers around him when he speaks, but vanishes as soon as he finishes. “Is the next patient prepared?” he asks you, turning around. His expression distant and bored. He has a crooked nose, generally uneven features, and big, almost luminescent eyes that catch every glint of light. (Mjoz: 10? HP 22? PP)
>>
>>35468666

You really don’t know what he’s talking about though, because you can hear gunfire clearly from where you stand.

>Bagged up and good to go, chief.
>They need your help in there. Demon hunters and stuff I guess.
>There has never been anything more certain to you, ever. This guy needs to die. (Shoot him or something.)

>>
>>35468694
>They need your help in there. Demon hunters and stuff I guess.

Try to bluff him into letting us "warn" Iptaph.

Slowly approach him as we talk, if we don't think he's going to buy it, like if we read something in his emotions, we can hopefully surprise him with a Fire Whip or something like that.
>>
>>35468694
>There has never been anything more certain to you, ever. This guy needs to die. (Shoot him or something.)

He doesn't give a fuck about the people in there. He probably kills them over trivial stupid shit, judging by how the others were talking about him earlier. Saying that they need his help will probably not do anything.
>>
>>35468694
"Demonbane, we should get moving. This place is compromised."

Wait for him to turn around, then fire a burst or two from our SMG, with SoS, into his back, or head, or whatever.
>>
>>35468694
>>They need your help in there. Demon hunters and stuff I guess.
>>
Even though some things on this world need to die, there’s something about Mjoz that doesn’t sit right with you. You don’t reply to his question, and head to the outside wall and cornerstep through. (-1 PP: 27/32) You hop down a couple feet to hit the asphalt, and then creep in towards the truck.

You glance behind you back at Mjoz, though he’s still standing right where you left him. He’s still watching you, but in a detached, clinical sort of way. You make sure to keep tabs on him, but continue toward where Tlenian told you you’d find Iptaph.
>>
>>35469423
The truck in question sits poorly parked, though the parking doesn’t really matter when there’s only like, three cars in the back lot. It’s a medium sized U-Haul – about the size you might rent if you were moving. You sneak up toward the vehicle, relying on the darkness to conceal you. (-2 PP: 25/32)

In the driver’s seat, you see an oily looking dude napping in the front. He has sweaty skin, jowls of fat, and a thick, brooding face relaxed in slumber. He’s also wearing suspenders. There’s no possible way you could mistake this for anybody but Iptaph, even in the dark. He’s a dead ringer for his photograph.

You can hear gunfire even from where you are on the street. It seems to be growing louder.

>Fill him full of holes. You really don’t have time, you’ve got demons on your tail.
>Now’s the time for your grenade.

Tlenian said it was the provisions truck, while provisions might be people parts, I don't think there are actually people in there.

And well, if there are, hopefully not SoSing the nade and Iptaph's bulk keep them from dying.
>>
Well, no time like the present. You hook your frag grenade off of its little safety clip, prime it, and chuck it at Iptaph’s truck. The metal ball hits the ground, bounces, and rolls perfectly under the driver’s side of the vehicle.

You take cover behind a sedan.

Quiet. Huh. How long does it -

A resounding CRACK splits the silence, and all the windows of the car you’re hiding behind shatter. You pop up once you’re able to reassure yourself there isn’t more shrapnel flying everywhere. You’re ready to finish the job if the job needs finishing.

Except… the truck is in the exact state as it was before. It’s as if nothing happened to it. Even Iptaph continues slumbering peacefully in the front seat.

What the?
>>
>>35469958
Fucking illusions...
>>
>>35469958

Suddenly, there’s a scream of rubber on pavement, and a truck identical to the one you just grenaded peels out from the parking lot, screeches around a corner, and starts heading inland. You spot the real Iptaph behind the wheel. He glowers at you and pushes a sawed off shotgun out the window, points it your direction.

You hit the deck at about the same time he empties both barrels at you. Pellets whizz overhead, but his shot was wide. Sweet mercy it’s a good thing he’s not a better drive by shooter. (+3 Stress: 34/10)

But now there’s the thing where Iptaph made a getaway. This isn’t how you imagined this going.
