You stomp your way across the wooden pier, making your way towards the slip where the fishing vessel is currently moored. It's a simply ship, little more than just a wooden hull and a bench for a fishermen to sit on. You do note that straps of canvas cloth are tied down to metal rings attached to either side of the bench, presumably for tying down the fishermen while they battle a particularly fierce catch. It lacks a sail, instead two oars extend from either side of it.

You carefully step into the boat. You've no desire to capsize the vessel and send yourself splashing into the water. You can't help but feel a touch paranoid as you set to untying the ropes which moor the fishing vessel to the pier. You keep glancing around to confirm that nobody's watching, but knowing what you do of the Varistha's capabilities he's probably aware of all that you've done so far. There's vegetation everywhere, and he's admitted to you that he sees all that goes on in the town.

You free the ship from the pier after only a few moment's work, coaxing up a current in the water to guide you gently from the slip. The boat turns under your gentle urgings to face the sea, and you spare a moment to consider your plan. Is charging out to face the pirates alone really the wisest plan? What if one of their vatis notices you and sounds the alarm? What if that ancient vessel of theirs has some forgotten enchantment on it that prevents you from messing with it, thus rendering your trip pointless?

On the other hand, what alternatives do you have? If you do nothing, then your companions may very well perish in the upcoming battle. If you inform them of your plan you'd likely only invite complaint and argument, you don't foresee any of your companions being particularly crazy about the idea of you running off alone to battle a veritable army of pirates capable of defeating the Shah's flagship in battle. You certainly couldn't bring any of your companions, it would just increase of risk of you getting caught. You might be able to convince Kadir to let you scout further ahead of the party, with one of your companions acting as an intermediary, but you're not thrilled by the prospect of speaking to that man.

>Sail on, you're doing nothing but wasting time.
>Inform your companions, you owe them that much.
>You should probably meditate once you get out to sea, facing the pirates with only half of your reserves seems an unnecessary risk.
>Actually... you're not sure about this anymore. Coax the ship back to the docks, you trust your friends are competent enough to survive the battle.

We don't know that yet.

Whats the plan guys? Are we trying to sneak in, find the shah, wait till the dose clears up? Kill everything in the room as fast silent as possible. then rinse and repeat?
If we're going in for the kill I say we put on Haician armor after we meditate.* On speed or slow*

BTW if we get into a big problem remember we have the vys sword. we can either leech or use the massive blast to cleave a few mother fuckers.
and our other sword we have a few vys charged into as well.

>>
>>35455124
>The positives of this plan --- fucked them voidways royally.
>That's the plan, except for stealing a ship. I personally assumed we were going to stealth in and blow/steal everything and then stealth out. Stealing a ship is kinda pointless when we can just steal the usefull/valueable shit from it. Not to mention the host of problems you no doubt bring up about it. If we do happen to run into any sort of trouble all we have to do is go straight through the floor and into the ocean and they're left with a rumor of ghosts and thinking if they've finally gone insane. Almost no way for them to prevent us from escaping.

>>Simple observation --- Pttuui!
>I think that maybe you are overestimating the risk here. The entire basis of the incorpreality potion is so that we should never have to come in contact with any of the crews. and if we do it will only be lower workers who will ignore us. We pop up from underneath a ship into its lower holds and peek through some walls till we have a grasp of the ship. then we steal any cannons below decks and steal all but a couple of the powder stores which we ignite.

protip: cannons are not manned when not in battle

>Also remember that the main point of this isn't to solo the fleet, it's to weaken them while maybe acquiring some loot

pulling this from the end of last thread
>>
>>35455122
Did you forget what happened after Mik gutted himself in an entirely safe environment surrounded by healers?
She'd be more likely to drop shit and run across the water and bull tackle mik
>>
>>35455124
I'm pretty sure that at this point, our vys sword can cleave a ship in half, if that's what it does. We shouldn't use that here, we have no idea what it does outside of having like 3 points of vys in it. What if it changes after 10+? Soma has explicitly told us we have no idea how it actually works and we've barely experimented with it at all.
Also, remember, we can't use enchanted objects while incorporeal.
I just find more and more reasons for why this plan is stupid especially since we're going in unprepared.

No it's a one man stealth operation.
>>
>>35455185

>>
>>35455124
>The positives of this plan are if we're successful we get an assload of loot and maybe some kind of ship while our companions will be safer during the main battle. What we'd need to do for this to work is spot them before we get spotted and swim up close/beneath them to not get shot out of the water then take the potion and assume we don't get caught while killing people with ice magic while either stealing loot and cannons through our cloak or using bartering applicable fire magic to light their powder stores, assuming the Rhynian cannons use powder like the pistol does and aren't completely magical.
Except the ship part.

>>35455185
nah, that was the plan for the swimmers. We're going to use the ghost pots to infiltrate, steal, and blow up.
>>
>>35455198
We are a better vatis, we have a less stupid plan than poking holes in the ship, we have a magic ghost potion. We are better off than they are.

>>35455150
>>we will kill the Shah

>>35455154
>The shah is dead
While he may be dead. It's not 100%
Capturing the king of a country = HUGE bargaining chip.
to the country not to us. If we have to sacrafice the shah for even our mini spy robot I wouldn't do it.
But yeah. meditate on a usefull effect. I don't think Meditating on the 1 boat we're on of Fire would be wise. While in the middle of the ocean.
I'd rather speed or slow.
Speed to activate on our self. To increase reflexes over haician armor. Will make Silent kills that much easier.
Or slow and throw in slow metal reinforcement into armor and heals. making us a battle god.

I'd much rather speed. Killing more members faster seems like the best plan.
Would be great to land on pirate island and fight our way out with the shah. Make him a bro.
>>
You push the boat onward, urging the currents to carry you out to sea. It's a simple task, at your level of expertise. The water flows eagerly to obey your whims. It takes only a few minutes for you to put the village behind you and turn the boat towards the southwest, where the pirate's distant island lies. You wave to a villager standing on his porch, flipping a meat skewer on a small grill.

Once you're well and truly out to sea, you reach out via that strange connection in the back of your head to contact your companions. {Everybody, listen closely. I've set out to sea with the intention of putting an end to, or at the very least severely weakening the pirates before it comes to open battle. I have with me a potion from the local Alchemist which ought to turn this into an achievable feat rather than merely an elaborate form of suicide. I've already set out to sea, and I'll not be dissuaded from my current course. I merely wished to inform you of my intentions, in the event that I don't return.}

You sever the connection with that, before they all start shouting into your head at once. The last thing you want when you're about to battle an army of pirates is a migraine. Instead, you focus on guiding your vessel across the waters. You manage to coax it up to a steady clip, the bow actually lifting just slightly out of the water as your little magically created current propels you forward faster than any sail ever could.

>>
We're gonna have like +20 modifiers for stealth.
>>
You come to a halt after perhaps thirty minutes at this pace. Your vys reserves have been further drained by the journey but you've made excellent time. You can already see a few pillars of smoke on the horizon, surely indicating the pirate's cookfires. With your vessel sitting calmly in the waters you fold your legs beneath you, letting your eyes close and the world around you fade away. You find your trance comes with surprising ease, and you spare a moment to consider what you'd like to meditate on.

It kind sucks that we never meditated on the "human" body. We could killed dozens of people making tiny spikes since we would have known exactly where to strike.
If we have time Would be cool to get that out of the way. even if we just have to focus on deadly kill spots. and study the rest later.

Don't think Mik knows enough of the body to do that. Which is why i just said upwards/w.e spike to the neck/brain

You begin to draw vys from your surroundings into yourself. Some would find it odd that the sea is one of the more vys-saturated parts of creation, but due to the sheer amount of time you've spent at sea it's no surprise to you. Fish, algae, and sea plants give off vys just as any living thing. Plus, though it might just be your imagination, the vys you gather at sea seems to flow more easily into your reserves than the vys you gather on land. It doesn't need to be so carefully coaxed. Perhaps it's merely due to your skill as a water vatis.

Regardless, all these factors together mean you manage to fill your reserves in what must be record time. Especially considering how drained you were feeling when you started. Your eyes snap open, the ebb and flow of vys vanishing to instead be replaced by an endless expanse of blue. Judging by the position of the sun relative to where it was when you began, only a few hours have passed. You'd guess it's three or maybe four in the afternoon. The evening tide will be coming in soon, and with it the fishermen retiring after a long day at sea.

Your ship has drifted quite a ways on the natural currents since you began meditating. You can just barely see the peak of a mountain on the horizon, the smoke columns much clearer against the backdrop of the blue sky than they were when you first spotted them. You'd guess you're roughly an hour out from shore, or you would be if you were using a traditional sailing vessel. If you were to propel yourself forward with magic, you'd likely be able to get there in ten, or perhaps a half hour.

>Stick to rowing, for now. You don't want to risk getting caught.

Here's the thing with all these options guys. A decent Water Grandmaster, like the pirate leader, would probably see the disturbance in the water or the weird mist in the middle of the day as a big red warning sign. And we definitely can't row up to them in full armor. This is why we ought to don the Hiacin armor and rely on our cloak of murkiness to swim there. It's the best option and least detectable.

You grab hold of the oars where they lie on the floor of the vessel. They'd been pulled in when you climbed into the ship, presumably to avoid them falling into the water. You haul yourself back and dip the oars into the water before pushing yourself forward, propelling the little row boat onward. It takes you quite a while to get into a comfortable rhythm by, fortunately, you've got time.

Your arms feel like they're on fire and the sun is dipping below the horizon by the time spot the shore. The pirates appear to make their main base of operations on the opposite side of the island, as the only man-made structure you see on the beach is a lone tower. Rather than the haphazard wooden construction you'd expect a band of pirates to cobble together for a watch tower, it's a smooth pillar constructed of some sort of black metal, you imagine at night it would be impossible to spot. At the top of the tower a metal barrel faces the sea, its purpose a mystery to you. Perhaps some sort of strange light-house. You don't see anyone on the tower, or even anywhere near it.

Have you lucked out, and showed up in the middle of a shift change, or are the pirates away for some nefarious purpose? You're momentarily struck with worry that they might have rushed off to ambush the navy while they were coming north, or perhaps attacked the village before the navy arrived. However, surely if it was the latter you would've encountered them on your way.

You reach into your cloak, extracting the vial of potion and observing it for a moment. It appears as a solid white glass sphere, roughly the size of your fist. Metal bands wrap around it at regular intervals and the nozzle is painted yellow with various red warning signs indicating possible danger. You press the vial to your lips with some small amount of anxiety and breath in.

Your mouth is filled with... nothing. It's like chewing on a cloud. Cold, vaguely wet, and not a lot of substance to it. You swallow, with some difficulty, and suddenly the vial falls out of your hands. It bounces against the wooden hull and rolls a short distance. The effect seems to begin in your hands and then slowly spread to the rest of your body. Your clothes slowly droop off of your body, eventually falling off of you completely.

You pick up the vial with a manipulate spell, bringing it to hover in front of you. You pick up your cloak in a similar fashion and stare at it a moment. You try to move the vial into your cloak using manipulate, but the cloak simply won't take it. As soon as the invisible 'hand' of your spell touches the fabric of the cloak, the spell is forcibly ended. You're left wondering what the hell you're supposed to do now.

You deftly pluck up all of your clothing and enchanted items and then wrap them in your cloak. You have to be careful to only touch one side of the cloak, as the other side simply destroys your spell. Oddly enough, in the growing darkness of twilight your still appears as little more than a faint black mist, barely visible. However, your items do not fall into it as they usually do. Even though you're certain you've placed them on the right side of the cloak.

As you float out of the boat and start to fly towards the shore, an idea occurs to you. You think as hard as you can about Ricky, but there is no 'direction' to think as there usually is. There is no connection. You're just imaging his form, rather than communicating to him. Hesitantly, you try moving the cloak inside of your incorporeal body. Nothing happens, and you feel no connection form. You try to think in the direction of Ricky, but once again you can find no 'direction' to think in. With an exasperated, soundless sigh you resume floating towards the island.

It's strange, you don't need to breath. You try to breath, but nothing happens. Yet you don't feel short of breath, nor like you're suffocating. You recall that Ghada said you wouldn't need to, but it just seems so strange. You reach the island after only a few minutes, you can go really, really fast actually. Flying was pretty damn amazing, though you didn't have much time to appreciate it with your current task to worry about.

You come to an immediate halt on the island's beach. It's strange, you didn't need to coast to a stop or slow down. You simply stopped. A thick tropical rainforest stretches out fore you, a cacophony of bird calls and insect chirping greeting you. It would likely prove a daunting challenge to navigate, if you couldn't just float through solid objects. Plus, you can see the cookfires just on the other side of the mountain. They serve as a convenient landmark for navigation.

Fortunately, the tower seems just as abandoned up close as it did from afar. The door is locked with a heavy iron chain, the padlock larger than your fist. A sign out front reads in both Rhynian and Samjaan “STAY OUT: DEATH LIES HERE”. You can't help but feel curious as to what might be inside...

You spare a glance towards your bundle of belongings. You can't help but worry that a nature vatis might already know you're here, but you don't want to just carry the bundle around with you the entire time. Maintaining your manipulate spell for so long is already starting to take a toll on you.

You scoop out a hole in the ground with a thought, manipulate carrying it off all at once. Once you've got the hole, you drop your stuff inside and smooth out the sand over it. When you're finished, nobody would suspect that there was anything buried there at all.

Your belongings taken care of, you soar off towards the smoke fires on the opposite end of the island. It's a small island, no larger than a handful of miles across at its widest point, if even that. The mountain is a short, sheer thing. It's only perhaps a few hundred feet tall, with a flat top, and steep, sloped sides of black ash and gravel. The elevation of the island slopes gently upwards as you skirt around the mountain, rocketing towards the opposite end of the island. Eventually you find yourself shooting through a strange sort of basin. You'd almost think it was man-made, the way the earth seems to rise up and curve inwards, guiding... something, rain perhaps, towards the opposite end of the island.

You pass through the earthen barricades and the sight that greets you is... unexpected, to say the least. Built on a rocky pillar in the sea, the pirate's fortress is a massive metallic structure. Turbines dot the structure in several areas, spinning rapidly, and the central tower seems to buzz with activity, even at this hour. The cookfires seem to originate in a small town which has sprung up on the other side of a long, metallic walkway. You can see people moving around rapidly, they almost look like ants at your current height, and even from this distance you can hear music and laughter. The buildings are ramshackle huts and haphazard wooden constructions, but they're certainly serviceable.

This side of the island seems to be mostly cliffs, oddly enough. You would've expected more jungles and beaches. You spot a large cave entrance, large enough to easily accommodate any ship, leading further into the island. You're at somewhat of a loss as to where to begin. You were expecting a shoddy fortress, maybe a castle at most. Not a full blown Rhynian Naval Base.

You soar towards the cave entrance, slowing as you approach. Tied to a wooden post above the entrance, a figure is tied. Hanging by its feat is a swollen corpse. Its face has been pecked away by carrion birds, though what remains is still identifiable as the man you saw just a few days prior. Shah Hadi El-Amin is dead, his body stripped naked. If you had to guess, it was not a blade, an arrow, or a bullet that did him in. Rather, you'd guess he drowned and they fished his body out of the water. You don't see any signs of violence on the body at all, other than the flesh pecked away from his body.

Attached to his body by a nail hammered through his forehead is a sign which reads “Long Live the Shah!” in Samjan. You fly close, taking a moment to study what features are still recognizable only to find your suspicions confirmed. The eyes are gone, as is the nose and much of the left cheek. However, the hair is the same, as is the structure of the face and the general shape of the body. You also note a signet ring on his right ring finger bearing the seal of the House El-Amin.

You fly past the Shah's corpse, nervousness welling up inside you. Does that mean you no longer need to kill the Shah, or that you must now kill Kadir instead? What will happen, should you fail to kill the Shah? These worries plague you as you proceed further into the cave. However, you force them into the back of your mind as you enter what appears to be a large cove.

You note docks built into the wall on your left, a small hole in the side of the wall at the end of the pier leading further into the cave system. Judging by the intricately carved pillars and the perfect arch these are not natural caves, but rather man-made. Perhaps an extension of an actual cave system. Oddly enough, there are no ships in this cove. Not a single one. There are no sailors drinking, or chatting, and you hear no activity from further inside the caves. The place seems abandoned.

Personally yeah, but combined we still have the wealth of a kingdom, soma said so. Mercs are cheaper than you think man.

Too much work. would rather explore the desert and Elaudia and find the dwarves and kill palaka worms and adventure it up.
>>
All these nationbuildings plans are pretty out there. Can we stick to the here and now please?
>>
>>35463214
What we have is enough to buy a merc army large enough to take anthus, not El-Amin.
>>
>>35463214
Yes but who would fight for us? Mercs are too unreliable. They can easily accept our gold and betray us as we would be fielding a 100% merc army. Not only that but we need to find enough mercs to be able to conquer a whole city at least. That means walls+archers+siege weapons. Even after we conquer the capital we need to pacify all the nobles.
>>
>>35463238
Second, let's not forget the spirit of this quest.
>>
>>35463246
I agree with you yeah, nation building would be nice but c'mon it's not like that's thinking waaay too far ahead
>>
>>35462720
my bad I fuckin got distracted and shit

It's not like ruling a nation is the main goal of this quest nor is it even really in the spirit of it. besides we get railroaded too much to even think that far ahead.
>>
>>35463266
Start small, gain rep, get more soldiers, go forward and conquer it all
>>35463281
Read above, take small shit and you'lol get enough of a rep that you'll get actual soldiers, not just sellswords
>>
>>35463390
let's not.
>>
>>35463281
There's such thing as a merc's pride though, if you enlist mercs that are unknown/of bad reputation you can be certain that they'll turn over.
We're rich enough to buy high quality mercs, they could do the recruiting of additional troops themself if we negotiate a contract.

>>
>>35463483
how do you propose that?
>>
>>35463425
Yes and what kind of high quality mercs would accept a contract with someone who wants to attack the capital and usurp the throne? Not only do we not have a reputation or noble title. We lack any sort of guarantee for them except money. We have no actual contacts which would help us in this endeavor. I highly doubt they would be willingly to risk their merc band for some random rich guy who wants the to conquer a country. Remember although we are talanted as a vatis we are relatively weak considering there are still multitudes of grandmasters and masters in the capital.

Destabilize the cliff face by pulverizing or otherwise shifting/weakening a wedge shaped swath of rock at the bottom. We should be able to do it over the course of a few hours with meditation at least.

You fly into the entrance to the caves, but pause. A thought occurs to you. Logically speaking, the powder store ought to be near the pier. Less distance to roll a barrel full of heavy powder when one needs to restock the ship. You take a moment to fly through near-by rooms and quickly find your destination. It's a massive room, filled to the rim with steel kegs. There must be hundreds of them. Nozzles protrude from tops of each keg, all of them currently folded backwards. Each one stands to roughly your mid thigh, and they're about two feet thick at their widest point.

The fact the powder kegs are steel is an issue. Steel doesn't burn, and you're not sure whether or not just getting the kegs hot enough would ignite the powder. You could ignite the keg if you lifted up the nozzles, but you're not sure if a single keg going off would be enough to start any sort of change reaction or not. You could also try setting off all the kegs at once, but that would likely be costly in terms of both manipulate and fire spells. You try to lift one of the kegs into the air with manipulate, but it's too heavy to do so without wasting your reserves.

You take a moment to consider the number of kegs before you, taking account of the room you're in. If you had to guess, there are around five hundred kegs stacked up and tightly packed inside this room. The room itself is massive, but if you were to set off all of the kegs at once you can only imagine you'd cause the cave system to collapse on itself. You may even cause the ceiling to collapse, or cause the destruction of the entire cove. Of course, this doesn't effect you at all, you're incorporeal. There is no way that whatever pirates remain won't be on high alert after you do this.

Ideally we'd wait for them to be in the cove before collapsing it, logically speaking. Otherwise there's little point.

I like the blood area idea because it has Water control and should help us improve and understand melee combat. Both ours and our enemies. And should get dosh.

Guys, I just did some calculations.

If there are about 500 kegs of gunpowder, assuming a keg is the standard 15.5 gallons, that will yield an explosion slightly less than 1 kiloton. That's like a nuclear bomb going off. This will produce a pillar of dust a thousand feet high and might wipe out the village and the facility both.
>>
>>35463932
Could we estimate how much time we have left? Going corporeal without access to cloak or more potion...is a bad thing.

I'll make a second thread in a moment.
