We walk back into the room of the occult club as Kaori slams her books onto her cot. She keeps lightly sobbing, but it's no where near the intensity that it was a few minutes go. I just wish people could have happy pasts for once. I am Itsukuma Masami, and it seems like everyone today wants to cry for some reason. Including myself, but that's not anything out of the ordinary. Kaori, the typically stern girl who runs the occult club and and can apparently tell people's fortunes, just broke down in tears after speaking with my mother. She had questions for her, but mom didn't give the answer she was looking for. She's been too distraught after leaving my house to tell me what she wanted to hear. Before she became completely silent, she said that she was a monster. I'm not sure if she means that figuratively, or literally. Kaori drags her bookbag off her cot, before collapsing into it face-down. She sighs into the jumbled up blankets and sheets. "Um. Kaori. I thought you were going to help the night students?" A muffled voice gently answers, "I don't have to tonight." Which I find kind of strange, if she doesn't have to help the night students then why did she come back to school?"Um, Kaori, aren't you going to go home?" She grabs her blankets and sheets, tugging them closer to herself. "Masami, I am home. Welcome to my house. " >"This isn't your house, this is the school.">"W-what!?" >Ask her about what she meant earlier>Ask her how long she's been living here.>"No it's not, you're coming with me back to my house." >Other?

>>35434548>"No it's not, you're coming with me back to my house." She can live there. We have rooms.. and beds.. and bathrooms. Those are rooms where you go to take baths. It's a thing.
>This isn't your house, this is the school! >What did you mean, earlier?>Oh no you ain't, you're coming home with me. If that's good, I'll write!
"No, this isn't your home, this is the school!" She grapples at the blankets in her cot some more. "W-where do you live, Kaori?" She sighs again, seemingly trying to hide her head under the blanket. That' s both confusing and terrifying for me to think about. She calls this place her home? I didn't even know they would let you do that. Is the occult club just a front for her to rent out a room and claim it as her home? Now that I think about it, someone told me that this club doesn't have that many members, if it has any.I walk up to her cot and sit down next to her, "What did you mean earlier by 'That makes you the monster'? You're not a monster, Kaori." I've seen monsters, and you are NOTHING like they are. She slowly pulls herself into her cot, snuggling against the blankets. "Masami, thanks for walking me home, but I need to get to sleep. I'll see you tomorrow.." "I told you, Kaori, you're coming home with me!" She snaps upward onto the edge of the cot, "I can't! I can't go home with you!" "Why!?" "Because! There's things about me that I don't want you to be involved with!" >Push the issue farther>"Okay, I'll talk to you tomorrow Kaori." >"No! "I don't care what you think you're involved in! You're not going to be alone anymore!" Her expression is between shock and confusion. She looks like she wants to say something, but then she slinks back into her cot and tugs her blanket back over herself. "If this is about Fortune, then I'm already involved, Kaori! You keep saying stuff like you're a monster and I wouldn't understand but Mom and I would understand more than anyone! You saw my dream, you should know that." She sniffles again from under the covers. Before replying in a exhausted tone of voice."..Masami, why do you care so much about me?" "Because you're my friend!" "NO I'M NOT, YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME! Earlier I was accusing you of being a spy! I made everyone distrust you with my card readings!" Well, she does have a point, but still! She rolls over in her cot, "If you knew anything about me, you would hate me forever just like everyone else." She doesn't know me very well either, it seems. >>35437659Aww, I wanted to take her home.
>>35437837Everything in due time, we will still take her home, just not today.
>>35437837Patience anon. She will be, eventually, but first we must work on dismantling those walls a little.
"FINE!" I yell, standing to my feet and kicking off my shoes and socks. "I'll stay here tonight then!" I look down at her face to note the mix of surprise and.. anger? "Hmph. Fine." She says, as she throws off her blouse and skirt before rolling back into her cot and wrapping the blankets. "Stay here as long as you want, but I'm not going with you." I don't think I'm going to get quite that naked, but I do take off some parts of my uniform to where it would be comfortable to sleep in.Oh! Right! If I'm going to stay here, there's a few people who need to know. I excuse myself and walk outside the room for a minute to make a call. First up is Mom, she needs to know before anyone else. A few rings later, she picks up her phone."Masami? What happened?! Is Kaori okay!?" "Hi Mom, she's being... distant. Let me put it that way. She had a small breakdown so I was going to stay here at her, um, house tonight. I don't think she needs to be alone right now." Mom agrees with me and makes some small talk before we say goodbye for the night. I punch in Aiko's number and immediately hear her voice on the other side. "Hello? Masami?" "Hey Aiko! I just wanted to let you know that I'm staying here at Kaori's place tonight. She- wanted to have a sleepover." The line goes eerily quiet. "Wow, really? She NEVER lets anyone go to her house. I think I only got to see it like once, and she was super upset that I did!" "Oh you mean the occult club?" "Huh? No, I mean her house." Wait, Kaori has a house and isn't telling me? "..when you were there, what did it look like?" "I don't really remember where it was, but I remember that it was terrifying! It would look like something out of a 'Dracula' film. Gargoyles lined the roof, it was surrounded by a huge fence.""Huh, Um. I guess there have been some changes. But anyway! I'll see you in the morning." "Take care, Masami! Don't get those huge dogs she has bite." D-dogs?"N-Night."(1/2)
>>35438503Sounds spooky as shit.
>>35438503I walk back into the room and- I notice that she's almost totally naked again. Is that a thing with her? Does she just hate clothing? She took the time to hang parts of both of our uniforms up on the rack while I was on the phone, but otherwise she's only in her panties and sits with the blanket wrapped around her slender form. In any case, I'm sure to lock the door securely behind me and make sure the only window in the room has the blinds properly shut. I walk over to the empty spot in her cot she's left for me and sit down. There's some grumbling behind me as she makes enough space in the blanket for both of us. I lay down next to her onto my side and close my eyes. Immediately, I feel her cuddle up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and pulling the blanket around us. There's a tiny, wavering voice that whispers "Thank you" as she presses her face into my back. I can feel the waking world slowly starting to fade with the added warmth against my body."Masami, I saw your nightmares, so I think it's only fair if you saw some of mine. Is that okay with you? We can dream about something else if you're sick of sad things today." >Yes>No>Say something to this? >Dream about something else?>Other
>>35438867>YesI'm not sure if this is 'yes show me' or 'yes dream about something else' but I mean the former.
>>35438867>Yesonly fair, yup
>>35438895It's a "yes show me" choice, sorry.
>>35438867>YesOf course we share her sad things.
>>35438867"Well I don't usually remember my dreams, but I'll try to remember this!">Yes
>>35438867>Yes>Hold her handGotta show moral support!
Ugh, sorry, something came up, I just resumed writing.
Apologies again, I had ANOTHER emergency to take care of. But I'm back and writing continues.
I grab one of her hands that are on my waist and hold it gently. With a final whisper from the waking world, I give her my answer. "Yes..."--I can feel the familiar warmth of dreams flow over me. This time, it feels more like I'm someone I should be familiar with instead of an observer. Which is good, because I'm sick of watching over things that I'm not even sure were real. There's something different this time, though. It's an endless sea of white, kind of like the inside of one of my cards. It feels like I have complete agency over myself, which is a new feeling for a dream! I could get used to being able to make my own decisions. I don't seem to be alone, there's a shadowy figure standing not too far in front of me. I can't see who it is, but I can clearly hear it's Kaori. That's weird, she seems to be wearing some kind of full-body suit. "Masami, thank you. I've never shared my pain with anyone else before. That's, sort of why I founded the Occult club. I- I just.." Her voice tenses up, and her words become hoarse. "What ever you end up seeing, please don't hate me for any of it. I regret enough of it as it is." Before I can even respond, I'm bathed in a light that feels like pure white in physical form. (1/2)
>>35440311This should be interesting. Sadly I gotta sleep so hopefully I'll wake up to some good backstory and bonding.
>>35440311Now I know I'm dreaming, for real. How can I tell? Because I don't feel in control of my own actions. Or anyone's actions for that matter. It feels like I'm once again in a endless theatre watching someone else perform for me. I just wish every performance wasn't a tragedy, judging by how this one is opening, I'm going to guess that I'm in for another good cry. There's a young girl, I can already tell it's Kaori, who is sitting on a chair in what looks like an extremely creepy mansion. She's surrounded by statues depicting mythical beasts of lore, armor sets that stand on their own power, pictures of relatives who have long passed. At least; I think those are relatives. None of them look even remotely like Kaori. She walks into a room that has a set of prints and circles drawn on the floor. With a dominating, menacing man standing in the center of the circles and prints. Blue energy seems to flow from him, into the stone brickwork. Hey, I recognize that guy, he was.. Er. He was at Fortune! He stood behind that jerk's desk like he was part of the wall. I didn't know he could even leave the building. "Father..." Kaori begins, with a hint of sadness in her voice, "I've done as you asked, I'm now in the Student Council. What else do you wish of me?"Wait.FATHER?!(2/?)
>>35440662So... you're the traitor.. that you accused us of being. Great girl... thanks a lot.
>>35440745She already said she framed us.But hey, now we know we got the same dad.
>>35440842Do we though? She may be Empress's little sister. I'd say we're still some sort of lesser figment.
>>35440867Figurative, we are artificial anyway. But so is she as it looks.
>>35440903So, sister get?
>>35440867He might be Moms father too.
>>35440917Yup. After this we are so taking her home with as our new sister.
>>35440961No, I actually don't think her dad was tower, we can't know for sure, but it seems unlikely to me, and the "shadowy guy" in Kaoris vision is the Chairman. So, we don't have the same father. Not that it matters, she is still getting taken home.
>>35440662"You're dismissed then." He says, again never seeming to ever blink. "Yes, Father." She says, "I have a question."He only stares at her, cold and unblinking as per usual. "Um. I found this picture. Who is the woman in the photo?" I can't see it very clearly, but I can tell Mom is one of the people in the photo, as well as Asai and that tall, shadowy man. "That is not for your ears as that picture is not for your eyes. Return it to it's rightful place on your way out." Kaori continues to appear stone-faced. She turns to leave the room, but turns back at the last second to ask something else. "Father, Am I good daughter?" He only continues to stare, in fact you're certain he hasn't blinked once this whole time. That's really creepy. "Does it matter?" Kaori immediately leaves the room, but in the hallway, her progress appears to have been halted. Every set of knight armor lining the hallway is now standing in perfect formation in the center of the hall, with one of them reaching their hand out to Kaori. She sighs, and hands them the picture. They incinerate it with an unseen power before returning to their position in the hallway. --The scene fades, the curtains draw, but this time it's Kaori with the same picture searching through a book of some kind. I'm not sure how she got that picture. She looks like she's in the school's office? How did she get there without anyone noticing? She flips through the book after studying each page carefully, and then another page, and another page. She even answers a phone call, and starts talking way above normal volume for someone who is supposed to be sneaking. "Ryouta, Hey, I found the new student. Have you heard of an 'Itsukuma'?" There's some muffled talking on the phone. She throws the entire file into a copy machine while she's waiting. "Okay, I'll go find out more about her before her daughter's first day at school. I know where she works. Mmhmm, I'll go there after school." (3/?)
>>35441364The next scene; it's kind of confusing. It's simply Kaori, kneeling in the middle of an office. She quietly sobs as to not disturb the office drones that step over and around her like she's not even there. Her tears grow in intensity as she watches an unseen presence.I know this place too, this is the 40th floor of Fortune HQ. Around the corner of a cubicle wall, I see-Oh my god, I see me. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUHHHHHH MOOOMMMMYYYYYY"-and that is so embarrassing. I want to shrink up into a ball and go invisible right now. It's not my fault though, I just hate break rooms, and mirrors, and cupcakes so much. The office workers scramble around and over Kaori. Again, they pretend that she's not even there. I wonder how she does it without a card? Behind Kaori, Mom rushes into the break room, yells at the office drones who have gathered to gawk, and gathers 'me' up into her arms. "Slow down, relax. Just relax here for a minute." A soothing, motherly voice seems to sound out all around the cramped office space. "Mommy.." Wait, I didn't say that. "Mom..?" Kaori has crumpled up into ball behind the cubicle wall. She continues to sob while clenched in her fist is the picture from earlier. The motherly voice makes itself known once more,"You don't have to tell me now, let's just leave." That's when Kaori takes this moment to stand up, she looks as if she wants to say something. But she never does, Mom carries 'me' around the corner to the elevators. While Kaori only stands completely speechless. The scenery melts away again, the stage starts to change as again, I find myself bathed in endless light.(4/5)
>>35441920oh god. Kaori must have been the other card that was taken from Mom, the one we saw in that one dream. She's kind of the Liquid to our Snake, except we will totally have a much healthier relationship.
>>35441920Ahhh... geez. Every post is just cementing the fact that we need to take Kaori home and adopt her as our sister.
>>35442063So... she got all the recessive magic?
>>35442088Well, her abilities are pretty passive, so yes?
>>35442063You mean she passed high school biology?
>>35441920The blinding light seems to melt away as we're both left standing in a sea of only pure white. Almost as if we're both standing in a world of feathers and soft down. There's something more conspicuous about Kaori now. On her face, concealing her beautiful features, is a mask. She was the masked girl all along. "Kaori... Why?" "Because." She smiles with the most beautiful, warm smile. "I hated you." She.. What? "I hated everything about you Masami, I hated that you got a loving family, I hated that you got a home, I hated that you could naturally do things that I couldn't. I hated that you could use cards by yourself, I hated that you kept getting so many cards. I hated that you walked all over Fortune and they only smiled and turned the other cheek." "But the part that I hated the most. Is that even though you were born with all your life decisions made for you; you still came to school with a smile on your face."I.. This is a lot to take in. "I'm sorry, I don't see where you're going with this, Kaori. Why are you telling me all this now? Do you still hate me?" She giggles, looking down toward the powder-white ground. "No Masami, I don't hate anything now. I-" She starts to tear up, "I've accepted that this is the way things were meant to be. Izumi would have never been my mother to begin with. Maybe in another life, you and I could have even been sisters." WAIT A MINUTE"We still can! All you have to do is come home!" "No, you don't understand. This life here at school was never my life to begin with. It was a sham I made to get closer to your friends. I did it because I was a good girl, and good girls always finish their missions."I'm really confused, I wonder if she notices how lost I am right now."I think- I think it's time for me to stop trying to run away from who I really am. Masami, this is goodbye. If we meet again, there's no telling if we'll be friend or foe. Please, tell the student council that I'm sorry. "(5/?)
>>35442594Also that was the 10,000th line in my notes. Fitting.
>>35442594Oh bullshit. Quit that good girl crap. that's just asinine.
>>35442698that good girl thing is the mind-fuckery that dad/fortune seems to use to keep its girls in check, apparently
>>35442698I think this "good girl" stuff, is some conditioning they put them under, thats why mom can't stop working for them.
>>35442742>>35442785Looks like we're going to have to break through that.
>>35442594I can feel the dream starting to fade, in the distance, a bell rings that signifies the start of classes. I can't believe how long we must have been asleep."Kaori! Wait!" "Masami, Please. Kaori never existed. Call me by the name that I've always been known by." I physically grab something, but it easily wrenches itself out of my arms. I try hugging Kaori's ethereal form, but only grab thin air. She leans over, and gently whispers into my ear. She says it so quietly that I almost didn't hear her say it. "Magician. That's who I'll always be." No."NO! YOUR NAME IS KAORI!" "YOUR NAME IS-" --"KAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORI!!" There's no one in the occult room. My outfit is still neatly hanged on the coat hangar. The sheets are stained with sweat. The entire room has had anything even remotely resembling 'occult' taken from it. It looks like an ordinary, disused room at this point. A disused room with a bunch of cots in it. I bolt to my feet and throw on my uniform. Darting out into the hallway, I can't see anyone around. Looking down at my phone, three missed text messages!? "Masami, you stayed with Kaori last night, right? She's not in class!" "hey samisalami, kaori's missing, did you two skip class without me?" 'Samisalami'? Damn it Ryouta."I don't know when you want to come to Fortune today, but call me and let me know! - Mom"I-I can't just lay here! I got to do something about this! No,NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO"I REFUSE TO LET YOU GO, KAORI! I'M NOT GOING TO JUST QUIT BECAUSE YOU TOLD ME TO!" I yell at no one and nothing. Right, Mom! Mom should know more about her. I take out my phone and dial her number, Mom will make everything better. She picks it up, "Oh! Masami! How did the sleepover go." Awkward."Ah, heh heh, Well. About that. Do you know anything about a 'Magician' card?" She stops on the other side of the line, and I hear a very faint whisper in it's place."(I haven't heard anything about that in years. Did something happen involving it?)" I try to whisper too, but I don't really know why I'm doing it."(Mom, Kaori is Magician, that's what she was upset about last night! She's just like I am!)"Silence on the other end. "(Where is she now?)""(I don't know! She was gone when I woke up!)" "(Let me know when you do. I'll see what I can do to find her.)" Whew. I knew it. Mom makes everything better. My next call is to Maeda, I think she might be able to call everyone else quickly."Maeda! Are you in class?" "No, I stepped out to look for Kaori. What's wrong?" "Get the student council together, Kaori has run away!" "What?! Where did she go?!" "I don't know but- "Can I really do this? No, this time is different, this time I will be strong."But I am going to go get her back." >Thread End
Okay! Sorry for that slowdown, but I'm glad we finally got to this thread!Thank you for the thread everyone. Let me know what you thought about these stunning revelations! Oh and how my writing was, that's important too.
>>35444255Its action time! Thanks for running, great thread, the plot truly thickens. Also I totally called Kaori being the masked girl.
>>35444323thanks for running!this sure was a good thread, with this PLOT i'm hyped for the next one
I know we haven't had much contact with Kaori, but how have you liked her so far?
>>35444323Thanks for running.
>>35444367Taking home material, clearly.
>>35444367There's only one thing to do about this.
>>35444367I liked her from the start. This reveal seems a little rushed but I guess that's what happens when you fail 3 composure checks in a row.
>>35447676That's what I was worried about. It does seem like I compressed it a little too short.
>>35448142It's believable though, and that's what matters. If anything, Masami being so stubborn about being friends is the weakest part here, and that's all the voters' fault and fairly in-character besides. Not that I would vote any other way in this situation if I had been here for the thread.
