Summary: You are Aldan, the Daughter of a Lord of a small village. You were chosen by the God of Ambition, Varsa, to be his Champion and to prove Varsa is the greatest God.

Last time, you murdered the Baron for the Duke, told Charles he was a wizard, learned a nifty new spell that can kill someone instantly and quickly. and went to the Ball with the Duke.

You’re on your way to the Emperor’s Gala in the Duke’s carriage. As you get closer to the center, you notice more lavish decorations and people out and about. Merchants are in front selling their wears to the upper crust. Eventually, you get to the gate and unlike last time, the guards demand to see your invitation and the seal on the Duke’s ring. After it is confirmed that you two are actually nobles, you are allowed in and directed straight to the Emperor’s Hold. You are escorted inside by two well-trained and masked servants lead you to the front. The Duke takes care of all of the intricacies, and you two are introduced.

“Baron Insmon, and his guest, Lady Aldan!” Is yelled out to the room of well dressed nobles, though very few people care. You two walk into the Ballroom proper, and the Duke instructs you to go around and socialize, just making sure to drop his name when you can, and goes off to fraternize with his peers.

You are standing alone next to the stairs. Three people catch your eye. One is a pair of older men, obviously Royal Academics, arguing about something. There is a single man flocked by men and women hanging on his every word. And near the far end of the room is a woman sitting at one of the long tables, looking a bit bored and lonely as people come up to greet her and walk away.

How about a compromise, talk to the woman and send our shadow snake to listen in on the argument
>>
You go over to the woman. You follow the other people’s example and bow in front of her.

“Yes, yes. The First Empress Maria Kells Alduwan welcomes you to our home.” The woman sitting before you seems utterly comfortable in her position at the head of the table, if a bit unexcited by the prospect of greeting guests. She is wearing a deeply inlaid gold and green dress and sits in one of four of the highest thrones in the room.

This is the Lady Maria Kells Alduwan, the first of the three wives of the Emperor. She’s married from some Lord of a father in the north. She had two kids, though you don’t quiet remember their names.

Thank you, its a lovely party. Though if you don't mind me saying such affairs can be quite boresom, I'd be willing to bet most of these nobles are only here to put on airs. At least it gives her majesty a chance to show off her stunning wardrobe.
>>
>>35431999
That...that actually works well. I go with this.
>>
You manage to combine all three of the options, and you make the Empress smile a bit.

“What a charming young lady you are. What is your name?” You introduce yourself and say that you are a guest of Duke Insmon. “Him? I never imagined he’d be taking a lady to an event like this, especially one with a wit like yours.”

You move around the table and are able to make some small talk, allowing the queen to continue to greet guests. “It’s such a bother being the First Empress. The other two don’t need to put on airs, and my husband can be such pig. You’ll never hear anyone else say it, out of respect, but my son is the First Heir and that fool of a man with the crown wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without me.”

Suddenly you hear fanfare coming from the stairwell.

“Introducing, the Three Royal Heirs to Emperor Alduwan!”

“The First Heir, Auron Kells Alduwan and his wife, Costanza Alduwan.” Two figures, both dressed as finely as the Empress beside you.

“The Second Heir, and Commander of the Emperor’s Army, Rudolpho Alaken Alduwan.” A tall and smug man walks out, a weapon on his side and rows of medals on his chest.”

“The Third Heir, Edwin Vor Alduwan.” You see someone run up and take their place in the small procession…and it’s Ed!

But whisper to her, so that's who he is.

You stay back, not letting Ed see you as he makes a few greetings and goes off to a corner to sit alone. You ask the queen more about Ed, or Edwin as his real name seems to be.

“Oh, him? He’s the first son of Mensha Vor Alduwan. She was so disappointed with how he ended up. Look at his brothers. Auron is a brilliant politician, Rudolpho is a fine Commander. And Edwin is just obsessed with his music and never wants any responsibility like that.” She leans back, holding out her glass for a servant to come and fill it with more wine.

Suddenly, the fanfare starts and you see a few people taking some seats on some tables on the end of the room. “Oh, Dinner is going to be served soon. You simply must join me at the table.” You’re shocked at how effective your charm has been, sending a quick prayer of thanks to Varsa for his gift.

Either try to get Edwins attention with a wave and flawless smile or sit close to him if the queen doesn't offer a seat near her

You accept the invitation, bowing slightly and remaining polite to the Empress. She orders a place be set up for you at her side. “The Heirs will sit next to the Emporer, and I’m sure you would make much more fascinating conversation than any of my fellow Empresses would.” Maria explains.

You sit down next to Maria, with two women joining you on the other side. You assume they are the other Empresses. The sterner one sitting closest to you is Kess, mother of Rudolpho, while a bit further away is who you assume is Mensha. Edwin and his brother’s join the table at the sides of the Emperor’s chair, and Edwin’s eyes widen when he notices you. You merely give a smile and knowing wave as you remain seated. Everyone is waiting for the Emperor now, meaning you have a slight chance at small talk.

You continue talking with Maria, making witty jokes and trying to keep toe conversation light. The Empress is a marvelous speaker, and every word seems to be carefully selected for the exact purpose she requires.

After a while, you start to notice a few people whispering and looking at you from other tables. You see Duke Insmon who takes the occasional worried glance at you from a ways away. “Oh, don’t worry about them. Every time I sneeze they feel as though it’s their business to gossip. Taking a pleasant young girl into my company to break up the boredom they couldn’t do a thing about is bound to put the gentry in a tizzy.” Maria remarks, enjoying her drink again.

Eventually you hear an even louder and more intricate fanfare as the whole room stands suddenly. You follow suit and everyone looks towards the main staircase.

“Presenting, His High Majesty. Conqueror of the Northern Jaw, Defender of Faran-Ra, the Blessed of the Four Gods. The Emperor, Basch De Alduwan!” A man clad in vibrant red and gold strides in. He stands tall and proud, if much older than anyone would care to admit. The room is utterly silent as he strides around the left side and stands at attention. The room waits until he is seated before returning to their own seats. Afterwards, the feast begins with trays of food being brought out. In an amazingly short amount of time, the room is vibrant again and everyone is drinking and talking loudly. Suddenly, the Emperor himself addresses you.

“I don’t recall inviting you to my table. Who are you, girl?”

Do you say
>”I am a guest of your lovely wife, Maria, Your Majesty.”

You say that you are a guest of Duke Insmon and that one of the Emperor’s wives invited you to the table.

“Insmon? That old fool? What kind of company could he have invited to this party? Are you sure there isn’t a man under all those ruffles and make-up?” He says, staring intently down at his food. You feel taken aback at his rudeness, but you refuse to let it show. You merely smile politely and assure the Emperor that you are quite female and continue eating and chatting with Maria.

The party goes on, and eventually you can feel Edwin staring daggers into your face but you ignore him and continue speaking with Maria until the dinner is finally over. You all enjoy water and a few fine fruits until the meal has settled and the dancing can truly begin.

“Perhaps you could dance with one of our sons?” Maria suggests, smirking a bit. “I’m sure you could pull Auron away from his wife long enough to enjoy his steps. And Rudolpho isn’t that bad. And Edwin is an excellent dancer. He had to be good for something.” You notice the Duke is sitting out, laughing at the company of several folks.

You politely accept the Queen’s offer and decide to dance with Edwin. He’s sitting on his throne when you come over to him and hold out a hand.

“Pardon me sir, would you care for a dance?” you ask.

“Oh.” He’s shocked that you’re speaking to him now. “All right.” He joins you out on the dance floor. You were raised with a father dreaming of the Capital, so it’s like child’s play to move your feet in time with the music and match the dancing of the other nobles. Once you’re both in the swing of the music, he decides to speak.

“All right, you didn’t tell me you were a noble. What is it, is Maria trying to set me up for marriage again?” He asks, spinning around you in as annoyed a way as he can manage.

Do you respond

”It doesn’t matter who we are, I was just touched by your music, Ed.” Ed just looks away, a little perturbed. You let him know that you honestly had no idea who he was, and just thought he was a nice man who played beautifully. And you doubt that the First Empress would try to marry him away to you, since you are just an unknown girl and no one here is even sure of your noble status. After the music ends, you two bow and smile at each other.

“And who is this, little brother?” You turn and see Auron with a very stern young man standing behind him. Something about the other man seems off as he is staring at you intently and it is making you uncomfortable.

“Down, boy. You don’t stare at a lady like that.” Auron says, looking back at the man. “I’m so sorry, Geoff is a bit inept when it comes to the finer things in life. But as a bodyguard he is top of the line.” Auron leans over and takes your hand, kissing the back of your hand and smiling.

“Edwin, you must consider yourself lucky to meet such an attractive woman. And she was able to entertain my mother, which is a feat that is miraculous on it’s own. Careful, younger brother. She may be a Fey in disguise and want to steal your breath.” He bids you farewell to go mingle some more, and Geoff gives you one last glance before following after his Master.

You ask Edwin about the bodyguard, Geoff. Edwin just roles his eyes as the two of you return to your seat.

“He’s been a part of the installation guarding my family for years. He’s supposed to be a brilliant soldier but I never stick around the training grounds long enough to see him practicing. My brother hired him as a personal guard a few weeks ago. He was always quiet, but he’s been particularly weird these past few days. Auron’s been letting him train on his own.”

You feel suspicious, but you don’t say anything. You, Edwin and Maria speak for a while until Edwin’s mother, the Third Empress Mensha, comes and says that they need to entertain guests from Mensha’s native home across the sea.

The Gala begins to wind down a bit, and you meet up with the Duke after Maria wishes you a pleasant evening and invites you back for tea some day.

You are too exhausted at this point to do much other than just collapse on your bed and fall into a deep sleep.

You awaken back in Varsa’s throne room. This time he is sitting at a table, spinning a knife under his hand. “You’re making a splash. People are talking about you. And when they talk about you, I get a bit stronger. It’s a beautiful thing, partnerships. So! It’s about time I give you another neat little improvement, eh? Or…if you want. It’s the location of a particular person who has just recently...woken up. If you could retrieve her and get her on your side, I’m sure that she will make an incredible ally. Or, you could kill her and steal her stuff. Really it’s up to you.” Your vision starts to fade out, as you hear one last thing.

“Oh, and you may want to bring the boy with you. For good luck.”

---

You wake up from the dream, feeling a little groggy and sore. Your dress from last night is wrinkled, but you don’t care much, because in your right hand is a very old looking map. You peel it open and inside is a crude drawing of what looks like the area of the mountains a few days away from here. Your town was surrounded by the closest dip in the Northern Jaw, the huge line of mountains separating the southern half of the continent from it’s northern side, but this is a much longer journey to the East.

It was said a Holy Man and Varsa worked together to seal away many demons. The worst were sealed below the earth, but some were locked away by Magic and left in caves, since they weren’t as dangerous.” You explain your information from Varsa.

“Aldan! Oh, thank god you’re here. I did the research you asked for and it all totally makes sense! Of course I must have some sort of magical ability. I keep hearing and seeing things and I thought I was just crazy, but I saw what you did and you said you could tell this stuff too!” He leaps over and gives us a hug.
“It’s so cool! I’ve been reading up on all the types of Wizards and Mages and stuff that worked for Varsa. There weren’t as many as with Hema but there were some! And…..and…” He drops his book and grabs the map from us. “This is Dragon-leather! Oh my Gods!” He collapses back into his seat, stunned at the texture.

“It’s supposed to be impossible to find this stuff. We only have one book in the whole library with this material. It feels like paper, and it was supposed to take ages to make this. Only Korona was supposed to know how to make this…”

It’s wonderful!” He’s running around, taking up papers and small books and shoving them into a small sack. “Oh, I’ll make sure that we’re prepared for anything! And I’ll of course record every step of the way. It’ll be fantastic!” Once all his stuff is packed he slings it over his shoulder and smiles at you. You’ve never seen him so energetic about something before.

Soon you find your supplies and the two of you are getting ready to head off. You’ve changed into a women’s robe that the High Priest has made. You all decide that it would be best to travel with the pilgrims. It will be a bit longer, but it is low key and there is safety in numbers. You talk to the followers of Varsa amoung the group and after seeing your and Charles’ robes they welcome you as fellow travelers and servitors of the God of Night. You travel along, and the walk is hard, but refreshing. Charles is a bit out of shape, and you can tell that Edwin is not used to the labor, but thanks to your blessing you hardly feel a thing and walk along at a pace that makes your companions envious.

Your group continues like this, occasionally stopping at roadsides to help people and provide charity, and you arrive at the first town in the early evening. It’s a reasonable sized town, much bigger than your home but it feels close knit. Your group camps on the outside after paying respects to the town leaders and visiting the Shrine of the Four Gods located in the center of town.

You are now among the group. You could talk to Edwin, who is entertaining everyone with a song about Rosk fighting a dragon to defend an ancient king. Charles is also there, though he is sharing his history notes with a follower of Hema who plans on becoming a scribe. And there is also one of the older members of the group, a ragged old man who is engaging a discussion about the nature of the four Gods with some of the others.

Man
time for plot

“I’m just saying, Lucien. That Gods like Rosk and Varsa have no place in today’s societies. Only petty men like the Emperor have the time and energy to devote to ambition and warfare. If we want to strive towards a more peaceful society, we need to focus out attentions onto the Wise and Compassionate.” A younger man says, getting glares from the men in the circle wearing black and gray robes.

“No, you fool!” One of the large men in gray robes says. “If not for Rosk, then how would man defend himself from others who would do him harm. If anything, We should put our determination in strength!”

The Older man, who is wearing rather plain brown robes and is not directly affiliated with anyone, turns to you. Everyone waits to see what he says, everyone looking at him with anticipation.

“Little one, you are not usually amoung our number. These men bicker daily about what is right and what is wrong. What do you think the world needs to move forward.”

Do you say

"You may have strength within yourself or strength of others. However without a true goal or purpose in mind all that you have will wither or succumb to stagnation."

You say that Dreams and Vision are necessary for the growth of the world. That without those dreams, mankind would never have crawled itself out of the mud and moves to build great wonders or question the world.

The Man nods, and though several people look upset or unsatisfied, the Man’s confirmation is enough to end the debate. The time is late and you all decide to head to bed. The Man stops you before hand.

“Thank you, child. That was a far wiser answer than what I would have expected of one so young. Tomorrow, when we depart, I ask that you speak with me further on our travels. May the Pilgrim grant you dreams of the Road.” And he departs to his own cot.

(Ok, I’m going to call it a night. I need to go get hammered. I’m going to archive this thread and then head out. You’ve been a wonderful crowd. G’night.)
