I'm Andreas Sternennacht, Knight of Marconetti and the unwilling recipient of the title of "Knight of the Starry Skies." While my primary duty over the past few months has been to look after the King's daughter Elena, an abrupt attack has out an end to that for the time being.

While Elena and her siblings Luciana and Emilio head down to the neighboring kingdom of Granache for protection, I've been temporarily removed from my post as Royal Bodyguard and am helping the King in his efforts to root out any more traitors. We've had a bit of luck on that end, but still nothing in terms of actually finding out who's behind this entire mess to begin with.

But hey, maybe this new guy that the King's brought in from Granache will help out with that!

"Due to the current... situation," the King says, "I felt it best to ask for assistance from somewhere that I wouldn't have to worry so much about their men being compromised."

Yeah, Gregory was saying that an entire Guard division going rogue would be completely unheard of in Granache.

"And so, I reached out to our friends in Granache," the King continues. "I'd initially asked for the assistance of Guillaume Arnaud, but sadly that request was denied. Instead, King Thierri sent over Sir Anatole here in his place."
"Runner-up choice Anatole Marignac, at your service," Anatole says, bowing to us.
"And now that introductions are done with, we can get to the root of the matter," the King says, clearing his throat. "Be it due to your actions during this crisis or your country of origin, the four of you have earned my trust."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Monique bows.
"As such, I've opted to have the four of you act independently in rooting out the remaining assassins and traitors who have escaped from us thus far... while I have others on the job as well, including some who personally swore loyalty to my daughter Luciana, the strength of a Knight is essential in the event of a physical altercation."

Ah, so this is what he's getting at.

"You'll be splitting up into two groups of two," the King says, "with Sir Andreas and Sir Leopold taking the lead as the senior Knights in this situation."
"Makes sense," Leopold says, crossing his arms. "So who're the other two going to be paired with?"
"That's up to you," the King replies.

Anybody else think Reinhold should convince Karel to spill the beans to Thierri and Gregory before she goes back to Marconetti?

They've proven able to contain Celestino's retardation, and Gregory would never let Adrien's kid pay for her father's mistakes. She is going to get found out eventually so it's only a matter of time.
>>
>>35378528
We can at least pitch the idea.
>>
>>35378528
We should just tell her that in character and let her decide on her own. It's not our life, let her live as she wants. We should just tell her of the dangers she's going to encounter.
>>
>>35378487
There's no professional reason to pick Monique. If you're going to be paired off into teams on an important mission, it's better not to be with someone you think is a douche if given the choice.
>>
>>35378687
magic sword waifu
>>
>>35378528
This isn't a bad plan but I'd like to prove the Adrien=Raoul connection beforehand just to be safe.
Celestino's reasoning for switching up the guards is to prevent his daughters from falling for someone not at a suitable station for their hand in marriage. If we proved that Karel was Granache royalty, that wouldn't matter and he'd encourage Emilio and Karel to get together, seeing as Marianne doesn't care for him. He'd probably oversee the girl swordy issue in that eventuality as well.
>>
If Anatole goes with Leopold he's definitely going to die. If he's with us we got a chance to save him.

Monique has more plot armor and the fate of Leopold is out of our hands.
>>

Sounds pretty solid.
>>

I think the part that rubs me the wrong way is that Karel is living her life like this due to her Mother's desire to live vicariously though it. Even if it isn't right or needed to hide her true gender. I can only imagine how much further she can grow and do if she wasn't hampered by the lie she lives. How much more happier she would be as well. Maybe even connecting with extended family she night not realize just yet.
>>
>>35378803

>>
>>35378752
Magic sword waifu's still helping, just not directly with us.
We've got treble-20 star dust magic on our side anyway. You don't put Magic sword waifu and treble-20 star dust magic on one team and nothing on the other, unless you want the other team to get horrifically slaughtered like the poor, poor red shirts they are.
>>
>>35378793
The important thing is convincing Thierri and Gregory to protect Karel from Celestino.

Thierri would do it because he's cool like that and Gregory personally knew Adrien.

If Adrien is also Raoul then they got an even better motivation to help her and can pretty much solve the situation just by revealing it.

We most likely don't even need to establish that Adrien=Raoul to get them on her side, and them saying something about that is pretty much the only way to prove it in the first place.

"I'll take the new- er, Sir Anatole," I say.

I'm kind of curious about how this guys fights... and also I'd rather not be stuck running around with Monique. I just hope this new guy isn't more annoying to be around.

"Heh, thanks. I already feel welcomed!" Anatole says, laughing as he walks over to me.
"Well I guess it's you and me, Monique," Leopold shrugs.
"Very well," Monique nods.

With that decided, the King then goes on to explain how he has several spies out in the city who may or may not have information on a potential cell of assassins who were unable to escape the country thanks to the blockade on the borders. And on the other hand, there's still the matter of the guards who turned traitor... it seems that the two groups are working independently to try and get the hell out of the country.

Leopold thinks that it's because the assassins are merely hired swords while the traitorous guards ascribe to some kind of personal grudge against the Royal Family, but I can't be sure.

>Anatole was the masked guy all along
>>
Okay so I was thinking about things while I had to spend an entire day cleaning up shit to take my mind off the fact I was cleaning up shit. That's enough about my life story.

I realized that Reinhold probably got maybe 4 lessons from Volker in that week. I'm gonna try and outline them.

First: Don't be an asshole. If you know doing something will make someone else happy, and it's not a particularly hard thing to do, then just do it. Don't be an asshole about it.

Second: How to swing a sword. Fairly straightforward.

Third: Never aim for the weapon. An opponents weapon is, at best, and inconvenience you should avoid or at worst right in your way. If you aim for the person holding the weapon and swing hard enough, something can and will give.

Lastly: A sword is just a sword. Life and death does not rest solely on the quality of one's weapon. What truly matters is one's capacity to win (measured by their skill and ingenuity and, yes, the quality of their weapon) and their desire to win. Desiring to kill won't sate you for shit, desiring to let a magic sword win for you won't leave you satisfied. A true victory comes from wanting to win for your own sake, not letting someone/thing else win for you and not from winning for someone else.

Right, I'm done now, you can all go on with your quest.
>>
>>35379362
Volker also taught him to be a ruthless mofo who aims to kill in combat.

If he had lived to adopt Reinhold he would probably also have given him his hero complex like a bad case of herpes.

Also, that's part of the 'aim for the opponent' thing.

Supposedly, it was all circumstantial. Also, yes, that's how you break a weapon; reckless disregard for the opponent's weapon and swinging too damn hard.

Ser turkey deathflag seems like a decent fellow with enough character build up to not die that easily, that said it has been awhile since someone died so i got my fingers crossed.

Who is to say Andreas is immune from deathflags. Him snuffing it in a blaze of glory would make good character development for our tiny loli princess. Revenge is a good motivator to improve swording.
>>
>>35379515
>that said it has been awhile since someone died so i got my fingers crossed

The only non-villain guy I can think off who died during PGQ is Sir Armin. Hardly enough to see a pattern.
>>
"I'd like to take that lead about the assassin cell," I say to the King. "Interrogations aren't really my thing, you see..."
"Great, so you leave that to us," Leopold laughs. "Fair enough, you show the new guy the sights in town while we head to the dungeon. That fine with you, Monique?"
"It's not my first choice, but I suppose it's something that needs to be done," Monique shrugs.

Great, so I don't have to worry about any grudges when it comes to this stuff.

"I'm surprised to see you going the proactive route, Sir Andreas," the King says to me. "You're that eager to see some more action on the field?"
"Not particularly, Your Majety," I reply. "I'd just like to get this over with so we can go back to how things used to be, I'd much rather be looking after Princess Elena than fighting for my life."

Though Armin was a good friend of mine, and I certainly wouldn't be complaining if I was able to get revenge for him while in the process of taking care of the rest of this.

Once Leopold and Monique leave for the dungeon, the King gives me the information on the identity of the spy in question that we're to meet, as well as the rendezvous point. After making sure that I have all of this memorized (can't risk having this stuff written down, after all), the two of us bid the King farewell and make towards the castle gate.

"Wow," Anatole says, whistling as we walk, "I've barely been in this country for a few hours and we're already being sent out on important royal business. Are things usually this exciting?"
"This is a recent development, " I sigh. "Usually I'm acting as bodyguard for one of the King's daughters, and with any luck I can get back to that sooner rather than later."
"Oh?" Anatole looks at me with a sly grin on his face. "Got your eyes on a Princess?" he says, pointing to a painting of Lucian a that we're passing by.

Still though, I'd rather deal with this than Monique's pompousness. I think.

"So which way do we go from here?" Anatole asks me as we pass through the side gate of the castle. "I was paying attentions to the directions that the King gave, but that doesn't really mean much when I have no idea where anything in this city is..."
"It's just before we reach the fountain in the center of town," I say. "Just follow me and we should get there before long."

"So Anatole," I say, turning to him as we walk down the street, "I see that you don't seem to be carrying a weapon on you. You don't use a sword or anything like that?"

I knew a few guys back in the army who swore by Fragment Blader since they hated being weighted down by weapons...

"Nope, no swords for me," Anatole shakes his head. "My weapon is this thing right here," he says, patting his shoulder.
"Uh... you shoulder tackle guys to death? I mean, I can believe someone like Sir Vincent doing stuff like that, but you don't seem to have the bulk to be able to pull that off."

"Haha, I can tell from the look on your face that you think I'm full of shit!" Anatole laughs.
"Uh... it's not that," I say, shrugging. "I just can't figure out how the hell a cape's supposed to be used as a weapon, that's all."
"Well you see, I cast a certain spell that lets me use it like it's my arm. A reeeeeally long arm."
"Okay?"
"And then there's lots of followup spells that I can use to add different effects to it... hey, maybe you'll actually be able to see it in action today!"

Part of me genuinely wants to see this, but the rest of me just wants to get all this shit over with so my life can go back to normal.

Can Anatole get any more Based?
>>
>>35380808
I don't know why but this sounds lewd.

Wouldn't he quickly deplete his mana reserves that way?
>>

He's not Takamaru.

I'm glad we send Anatole off to Marconetti because I'd be worried about Reinhold trying to consume his legs if they spent a significant amount of time around each other.

As awesome as it is potentially creepy.
Which seems rather in character at this stage.

Is he also George Washington?
>>

"So, uh... this cape magic of yours is how you made Knight?" I ask.
"Yup," Anatole nods. "It was a long, rough road.. but I finally got to my goal and now I get to spend most of my time wandering the country hunting down bandits and other ne'er-do-wells... and sometimes I get shunted off to other countries like this, I guess," he shrugs.
"Yeah, sorry you had to get caught up in our mess like this."
"Eh, it's not your fault," he says, shaking his head. "Besides, Marconetti's enemies are Granache's enemies. It's just one of those things that comes with having a thousand-year-long alliance."

At least he's not sore about it.

Deciding that we out to have an equal understanding of each other's abilities, I explain the basic gist of my own sword magic and Ephemeris Edge and all that while we continue to walk. And lucky enough, I finish just as we reach the general area that we're supposed to be meeting this spy.

I could almost swear that I've been around here before...

"Oh wow!" I hear a woman calling out. "I never expected to see you here!"
"Huh?"

Both me and Anatole turn to see who just shouted that, and I'm surprised to see... no, I really shouldn't be seeing as how I just realised why this area seems so familiar to me.

"Is this a girlfriend of yours?" Anatole says, pointing to the lady who's running towards the two of us.
"No, it's the mother of a colleague of mine," I say, breathing a LONG sigh.

Please please PLEASE don't start hitting on me this time, the last thing I need is for Anatole to have more material to use on me.

"Umm, hey... Alicia, right?" I say, waving unenthusiastically to her.
"How sweet of you to remember my name!" Alicia giggles. "I'm in a super good mood because I just got a letter from my sweet little angel Karel, and now you show up to pay me a visit..."

And then she notices Anatole standing next to me.

"Ooh, and you brought a friend!" Alicia says, showing my fellow Knight a beaming smile. "My name's Alicia, how do you do?"
"Just fine, thanks," Anatole replies. "Anatole Marignac, a Knight of Granache currently on loan to King Celestino, at your service."
"Nice to meet you!"

"So you're from Granache..." Alicia nods. "you wouldn't happen to have met my son Karel, would you? He's Prince Emilio's bodyguard."
"I was barely in the castle for half a day before getting sent over here," Anatole sighs. "So I didn't get the chance to meet your son... though I'm surprised to see that a Royal Bodyguard's mother is as young as you are."
"Oh, you flatterer!" she giggles. "Karel's only fifteen though, so it's not just that I -look- young!"

She seems pretty proud of that.

"So what brings the two of you this way?" Alicia asks. "Looking for a place to eat? Because I happen to own a fine establishment right here..."
"Maybe some other time," I say, forcing a smile. "We're out here on royal business."
"...oh," her expression darkens. "This is about that mess that happened the other day?"
"Something along those lines," I nod.
"Well don't let me hold you up," she says, stepping aside so that we can pass. "The sooner you catch those bastards, the sooner I can see my Karel again."
"Heh, thanks for understanding."

After leaving Alicia to go back to her restauranting, Anatole and I turn into a back street and continue along our way... though much more on-guard than before.

"So that Alicia lady," Anatole begins, "it seemed like she knew about what was going on in the castle. I thought the King was trying to keep that stuff a secret from the general populace so they don't panic... did her kid tell her about it?"

"She was there when the initial attacks happened since she lives in the castle," I say. "Can't really keep it a secret from someone who watched it happen, you know?"
"I guess not," Anatole shrugs.

With that line of questioning out of the way, Anatole follows me through a few more alleys and into an abandoned building. Though it's creepy in here and it feels like we could be attacked at any moment, this is the rendezvous point that the King told me about.

"...so what now?" Anatole asks.
"We wait, I guess..." I reply.

And almost as if waiting for me to say those words, a figure approaches us from the shadows.

"Andreas Sternnacht, Knight of the Starry Skies, and..." the figure says.
"Anatole Marignac, Knight of the Copper Strands," Anatole replies.
"...what?" I turn to him.
"Well my hair's green and that's the color that you get when you burn copper with... ugh, never mind," he sighs.

C'mon, this really isn't the time for jokes.

"He's a Knight here from Granache," I say, pointing to the guy next to me. "For the time being, he's under King Celestino's command."

"Turned traitor?" I scoff. "Not in a million years."
"That's good to hear."

It's especially hilarious because of how Karel brought how she was a year younger than Marianne to explain why Aquaman couldn't be her daddy because mommy doesn't go after married men.

Alicia is around 29-34 years old, right?
>>

She was younger than Reinhold is now by the time of Karel's conception so that put her at 31/32 max.

for reference Adrien was somewhere around 30 at the time.

I think it's more likely one of his older daughters or sons founded it since the assassins were after the younger kids and his wife.

Is Alicia more sexually frustrated than Luciana?

Alicia is 30, Karel is 14.

It's possible, but she lacks anything even resembling knowledge of how to build such things.

That's the plan, and the end is actually in sight!

Five(?) years younger than I am now.

Nope, she gets plenty of action when she so wishes. She's just a naturally flirty person to begin with.
fun fact: she wasn't hitting on Anatole at all, he isn't her type.
The feeling is mutual.

>Did Karel squeel with glee at the prospect of being Emilio's type after Reinhold left?
No, she freaked out pretty bad after that because of WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN.

>for reference Adrien was somewhere around 30 at the time.
IIRC it maths out to Adrien being around 23 at the time, assuming that he and Volker were similar ages.

During the flashbacks Reinhold was 8 or so, which means Karel would've been 5 at the time. Adrien said that Volker had been using the sword he gave to Reinhold for the past 5 years, and Agnes later mentioned recognizing it as the one she gave Volker for his 23rd birthday. (Also somewhat corroborated by Gregory being 38 at present, and him and Volker being wise-ass kids together.)

>>35381852
Best not to. We can nudge her in that direction, but anything more than that would be a betrayal of trust.
>>
>>35382727
Technically, nudging is still making it happen.

It's just a matter of doing so subtly and making everyone involved think it's their idea.
>>
>>35382968
We really gotta confront Gregory about not recognising Adrien's name soon.
>>
>>35382968
On the plus side, if Karel marries Emilio and we marry Luciana, that really would make Karel our little sister.

A bit more nudging may well be called for...just not a nudge as done by Hawke in DAII.
