You decide that even if you’re supposed to be all quiet and sneaky and stuff, it doesn’t really do you any good if you sneak around aimlessly. You’ll have to have a chat with the wax-faced definitely-not-a-human guy coming out to his car.
>>
>>35374042

You slip under the corner of the office, and wind up outside. (PP: 30/32) You circle around the car as its owner approaches, smartly keeping out of view. He puts his bag down and fumbles with his keys for a moment. You take advantage of his distraction to corner step into the back seat of the sedan. (PP: 29/32)
The car hasn’t been cleaned for a million years – it smells like rotting fruit, and yeah, amongst countless empty bottles of Red Bull and tequila piledo n the ground, there actually are sickly looking apple cores scattered here and there. The darkness doesn’t hide any of it from you. Gross. (+1 Stress: 19/100)

The door unlocks, and you hold completely still. Wax-face whistles a tune as he opens the door and slides into the driver’s seat, right in front of you. He tosses his bag into the side seat and goes to start the car, completely oblivious to your presence. He smells strongly of stale sweat, alcohol, and bleach.

He has no idea you’re even here. Maybe you should… snap his neck? You don’t know if can, but you kind of want to hear the sound.

>SNAP HIS NECK.
>Resist urge to snap necks.
>Put a claw to his throat.
>Keep him at gunpoint.

You shake yourself out of your neck-snapping mood. That would defeat the purpose of stopping for Wax-face in the first place.

Instead, you wrap your shadow around him, pinning him to his seat. He doesn’t have time to make a sound before you touch your claws gently to his neck, just under his chin. One twitch would be more than enough to do him in. A feeling of power comes through you. +3 PP: 32/32)

Wax-face looks into the the rearview mirror with beady eyes, but all he gets is a shrouded figure with a dark splotch for a face. A weird giddiness settles in the pit of your stomach at having another being so helpless before you. You can’t keep from smiling. (-2 Stress: 17/100) “I’m going to ask you a series of questions,” you say, trying to sound menacing, but sniggering to yourself instead.

Wax-face trips over himself to reply – his voice is raspy and choked, like somebody who’s spent all their life in a coal mine. “Erh… hwatere thou desirest, m… mlahdy,” he manages. His English is broken, and he speaks through a phlegmy, throaty accent. You feel the delightful cascades of fear rolling off of him. (-1 Stress: 16/100)
>>
>>35374885

You press your claws tighter to his throat, because you can. “Tell me where Iptaph is.”

Wax-face tries to length his neck away from the points of your claws, but you keep him firmly in place with your shadow. “The Master… lies yonder,” he says, pointing a shaky finger toward the far warehouse. “He musn’t be… disturb-ed.”

“Who’s with him?” you ask, ignoring wax-face’s warning. “Does he have anyone guarding him?”

“I am with Mjoz,” says Wax-face, beginning to glisten with sweat. He struggles for the words as he speaks. “I am… knoweth not how the… the Master keeps and goes, mlahdy.”

>Sucks to be you, then. (Kill him.)

“Who’s Mjoz?” you ask.

“He is the fasge,” Wax-face answers.

You have no idea what a fasge is, so you tighten your grip on him to prod for an answer.

“The fasge,” he croaks again, even more nervous now than he was. “The… he who workest the… Master’s chattel.”

Seeing that wax-face isn’t really the most useful source of information here, you decide to look in his bag. You eek out a shadowy tendril, hooking the zipper and opening the duffel. Hard pieces of things come spilling out. You have trouble understanding what it is exactly you’re looking at. (-1 Sanity: 96/100) There’s at least a hundred of them. Some scorched, others bearing knotches or cuts. Wax-face’s bag is full of small bones. Or just pieces of bone? They’ve all been cut into a uniform size.

That’s… not right. (+7 Stress: 23/100)

You no sooner process what you’re seeing than you know what you have to do. The only way to fix this is to make Wax-face die right now, here in his messy car.

You drag your claws backwards over the demon’s throat with an almost panicked, knee-jerk motion. No sooner than you’ve done it, the full, coppery scent of blood fills the car. The thing in front of you makes a pained, wheezing sound, clutching at his throat as he begins bleeding everywhere. His form flickers and distorts, turning into something bigger and more misshapen than you would have expected. His coat keeps you from the details, but smooth fluid pours from his open neck.

He keels forward and would have hit the horn if you hadn’t been keeping him restrained with your shadow. You buckle in the ungainly corpse to make sure it doesn’t move when you let it go, and step out of the car. You’re mad now, but killing stuff has cleared your head somewhat. You can handle anything. (-3 Stress: 20/100)
>>
>>35376151

(Bloodlust: Satiated)

Your imp alights on top of the car, blinking its sharp little eyes at you as if asking, “What now?”

You lick off your bloodied claws in thought. It tastes sour, and kind of bitter, but also kind of good. You stop yourself and radio Ranthix. “I know where Iptaph is,” you say. Your voice sounds kind of weird to you for some reason.

“IF YOU KNOW SO MUCH, KILL HIM THEN!” Ranthix advises.

>Head straight for the warehouse Wax-face pointed out. The sooner you get this over with, the better.
>Take it slow and cautious. You know where you’re going, you can take your time.

You take Ranthix’s advice. Or at least, you take steps to take Ranthix’s advice. You send Monster back up into the air to scout, and head in the direction Wax-face pointed out.

You’re pretty mad right now. All those bones. Who just goes around carrying a bunch of people’s bones? Who the hell would cut up people’s bones? Of course you already know. Mjoz, the fasge – whatever that is. He must be the one Iptaph has on the ground floor of the chop shop. You’ll have to make sure to pay him a visit.

Your general angriness makes it hard for you to focus on your job, and you catch yourself not being as stealthy as you should be, in favor of speed. (+3 Stress: 23/100) You cross the darkened parking lot, skimming around the edge of the couple guys chatting by the front door, and corner step your way into the first warehouse. (-2 PP: 30/32) You find it tipped to the top with shipping containers, arranged in long aisles. You can hear voices of workers. Or are they more of Iptaph’s people? It’s hard to tell, especially because from your secret corner you can’t see anybody.
>>
>>35376851

From what you understand, the warehouse behind this one, right on the waterfront, is the one you want. But there’s a few ways to go about it, and there are actually still some people here, despite the lateness of the hour. The brightness of the overhead lighting will be difficult to work with.

>Take a moment to spy on some of the guys around here. This is more people than you’d expect at midnight.
>Run through. Nobody’s going to stop you.
>Make sure you remain unseen, walking through walls and messing with shadows as appropriate.
>Climb up to the catwalks and crane system. It’s darker up there, and the crane rails and catwalks bridge the warehouses together.
>Have a look around this warehouse. You know where Iptaph is supposed to be, but you don’t know if that’s where his ‘business’ is.

You decide to circumnavigate all the lights by heading upwards. You navigate your way through the warehouse towards a staircase, having to darken a few shadows a sprint forward or backward in order to stay out of sight. (-3 PP: 27/32) You eventually mange to get to the stairs, and make your way up as fast as possible to minimize the risk of anybody looking your way.

You get to the top and set out over the catwalk. Luckily the crane isn’t running, because you’d probably be spotted by the guy operating it if it were. While you go, you decide to give a moment to spy down on some of the guys moseying around. You crouch down and look down, taking a moment to concentrate on the sounds of their conversation.

“-hate it when they say one thing and do the other,” says one guy number one.

“And that’s not the worst of it,” says the other.

“And that’s not even the worst of it,” the first replies.

“I was telling Carry just today actually and – wait, have you ever met Carry?”

“Who?”

“You’d know him if you met him. He’s usually on Ireson’s shifts.”

You get bored of listening to their boring conversation. You’d much rather just look at them and see if they’re weird. You can barely see anything about them from where you are, given that you were relying on your night vision, and this is a pretty well-lit place. You decide you’re going to need to break out the optics.
>>
>>35377796

You reach inside your tactical vest and pull out a light aluminum case, and take your glasses out and slip them on your face. Now you can actually see more than twenty feet in front of you.

You look back down at the two people below. Both are wearing orange hard hats and reflective vests. The guy who hates stuff is short and has a lazy way of walking. (Guy: 10/10 HP) His friend looks similarly not abnormal. (Other guy: 10/10 HP). Well.

You continue on, letting your imp slip in through an open window to do some more spying for you. Everybody is normal. Everybody except a few guys by the huge crane bay door that faces your target warehouse. They look normal enough – two lean, rough looking men in orange vests, having an animated conversation about something or other. But they definitely don’t sound normal. They’re chatting loudly and laughingly in language that barely eludes your comprehension.
>>
>>35377813

You don’t think the average dockworker speaks Heltic.

You snap back to yourself, but keep your imp lingering on them, and creep forward. You find that, given their general disposition, they’re unlikely to notice somebody crossing the bridge into the warehouse they’re supposed to be keeping tabs on.

>Cross the catwalk bridge into the warehouse of evil. You can be stealthy and stuff, it’s nighttime.

You know what, after you kill Iptaph, maybe you’ll come back for those two. But right now you have to make good on this whole assassination thing. You come up to the empty bridge, and wait for the pair of demons to get particularly caught up in whatever joke they’re telling, and then you go for it.

You spring across the bridge like a trick of the light, nothing more than a dark spot in their peripheral vision. (-2 PP: 25/32) Dark cranes stand saluted by stars above the building before you. With nothing to your sides or below you except metal grating, you feel like you’re flying, if only for a moment. And as you run, you realize something. You are a ninja. Screw Ranthix and his opinions. (-3 Stress: 20/100)

You reach the other end of the divide, but find the door to the other warehouse locked. You don’t even need to corner step this thing. You can unlock it. You thread your shadow around the edges, and scrape around the mechanism until it opens for you, ninja queen of darkness. You slide into the door and close it behind you.

You are in the top corner of a building slightly smaller than the one you just left. The place has a musty smell to it. You guess the windows and big doors into this place probably haven’t been opened in years. The layout isn’t quite one single big space, either. There’s a second floor that rings around the edge of the warehouse.
>>
>>35378697

Someone’s erected walls of plywood everywhere in an attempt to section off the second floor into a series of rooms. The ground floor is a maze of shabby buildings made of shipping containers, canvass tents, and hastily erected woodwork.

You can see movement in the little encampment below – twitching shadows cast by lights on fabric walls, or a figure wheeling around a pallet stacked tall with heavy boxes.

Your catwalk zigzags over everything, over both tiers. The rooms on the second floor’s ring don’t have ceilings for the most part, so you could easily get the drop on somebody that way, if that was your thing. Otherwise, there are a pair of suspicious persons playing cards at a dinky little folding table. They’re in a position that overlooks the whole place, and they’ve got a pair of assault rifles resting by their chairs.

You could stick to your catwalk. It’s exposed, but hopefully dark enough that anyone who looks in your direction won’t notice.

>Position yourself above the sentinels and drop in on them.
>Stick to the catwalk and explore the second floor rooms. Maybe find a sweet entry point.
>Take awhile to get a feel for the space. It might be risky from your perch, but maybe it’s worth it?

We could top off PP while we slit his throat. Or just sneak by.

I don't really want to go by the cages. That way lies San loss and stress gain from seeing people in cages and not being able to let them out right away because it'd potentially alert Iptaph's goons.

First, check the location out with all our senses. Then go in.

Let's try to steal his PP, he's like a delicious juice box left out for us, and kill him as efficiently as possible. Make sure he doesn't make any noise.

You creep around until you find the perfect spot – on the second floor there’s a demon asleep in a hammock, within one of the makeshift plywood rooms. He’s scrawny, spiny, and greasy. You eye him with disgust and remove your glasses before dropping down into his shaded abode.

The darkness slows your descent, and you catch yourself with your shadow-self. You touch down soundlessly next to the slumbering demon. He has teeth growing out his jaw, outside his mouth, and he’s covered in what look like sores. He smells like bog water, even if you’re pretty sure you’ve never been to a bog before. That’s what it’d smell like though, if you had to guess.

You creep over to Spines McGhee, wrap your shadow carefully around his head, and then strangle him with your claws. He doesn’t last very long. Unfortunately, the suddenness of his death prevents you from getting too much out of him before he dies. If you didn’t have to worry about him making sound, you could have drew it out a little longer. (+5 PP: 30/32)

Anyway, now you have more blood on your hands. It’s a good thing you already ate, because otherwise this would be distracting. You know. More than it kind of already is. Why does blood have to smell so good, even when it’s cruddy scumborn blood? Bleh.

Whatever. You can figure this out. You figure that since you’re on your terrirtory, and there aren’t an infinite number of demons nearby, you should be able to use landmastery stuff to figure out where they are. Then you can check the ones that are easy to check on with Monster, and if Iptaph isn’t one of them, then you can check with your own eyes and stuff.

You try to get all metaphorical and stuff, but the smell of fresh blood keeps distracting you. You try cleaning off your hands a little so you can maybe concentrate better, but wind up getting caught up in the rich, magical flavors of demon blood instead. You wind up wasting a couple minutes contemplating maybe getting more blood for yourself.

Okay, scratch landmastery solving this problem – you just can’t concentrate right now. You just need to go do it yourself. You sneak out of the room, and head down to the main floor. It seems more official for some reason, and therefore more likely to have Iptaph hanging around someplace.

You come out at the bottom of the stairs in a low crouch. You can hear a couple distant voices, but you can’t really tell how many demons are here exactly. This is going to be bad.

You creep forward quickly and quietly, trying to pick out Iptaph’s scent. If he’s really half goat, he should smell like he’s half goat. Nobody you’ve seen so far really looks Nyphican, so his scent should stick out if he really spends a lot of time around here.
>>
>>35380486
After some initial prodding around the peremiter of the encampment, you get some smells enough that you can get into the looking around for stuff business. You head into the maze, more paranoid than ever. You make sure your imp is overhead, so you at least can keep track of those who venture out into unroofed areas. If you had to guess, you’d say there’s probably something like ten demons wandering around who’re awake. How many more there are that are asleep, you can’t say.

You pass by shanty houses and little huts, ringed with stuff you’d usually find at garage sales – old electronics and stereos, cheap paintings and posters, knick knacks and stuffed animals. Everything smells bad, but it’s kept at a minimum through the thick scent of soap and disinfectant. Someone’s gone through an effort to keep everything nice and shiny.

One tent, kind of located more toward the back of the place, seems to smell the most like Iptaph would. Maybe? The tent’s big, and has several bright lights on within. Wires run to the tent from all directions, and the smell of bleach, rubber, and the colorless smell of distilled water waft from it.

You spend a second trying to tell whether or not Iptaph’s scent is really coming from within. It’s hard to tell with so much sterilizers in the air.

You hear footsteps a second later than you meant to, and dive off to the side. You pull darkness around yourself like a blanket, and hold perfectly still, not daring to breathe. (-2 PP: 28/32)

A stalky demon wearing a ragged pair of jeans and a zippered hoodie steps by your hiding place, maybe fifteen feet away. Its face resembles both that of a hyena and a crustacean, with matted tufts of fur smashed together with bony, slightly shiny cartilage. It has two thick arms and a series of smaller and smaller little arms huddled against its chest.

The thing looks at your hiding spot with a pair of eye-stalks and a pair of smaller, predatory eyes, slit like those of a cat. (Thing: 19 HP, 8 PP)

Another demon appears behind him, carrying a suspiciously human-shaped bundle over one shoulder. This demon has a ribcage like a barrel, and thin, sinewy arms ending in long, hooked claw-fingers. He has no head that you can discern. “What is it, Tlenian?” he says somehow, adjusting his bundle and pulling up short behind the hyena-faced thing. It looks like he was headed to the sterile, well-lit tent. (Barrel-chest: 11 HP, 4 PP)

>Hold even stiller.
>Use terrorizing glare on Tlenian. Try to psych them out.

>Try to distract them with your imp.

For the imp distraction I think a nearby fire would work, there's piles of wires and old electronics which might spark something off, and flammable things so it wouldn't be hard to make it look natural. They'll probably notice it quickly and want to deal with the fire before it spreads, and if Tlenian looks at it his night vision should be screwed up for a bit.

Try to time the imp distraction so Tlenian freaking out and panicking a bit coincides with the distraction happening so it comes off as more him being weird, jumpy, and twitchy, not him getting mindfucked.

Sap Will on Barrel-chest while we yank Tlenian off balance with shadows and then Hellfire claw him to death.

Then drag Barrel-chest into the tent and force him to tell us where Iptaph is and what kinds of powers he has and such. Probably want to stuff Tlenian in the tent too or at least in a dark corner.

Bonus points if we flay them open before we leave. Toss mutant shrimp-people organs around the place like streamers. Maybe arrange them in some kind of shape. Should go a ways towards making people think there's some loony Verwelken running around.
>>
>>35380728
Y'know, we might want to be sure that Iptaph isn't in the tent before we drag anyone in there. Into the white, brightly lit, tent.

It seems like a pretty damn likely location for him to be, especially since if I was in his position I'd be paranoid as hell about Verwelkens and spend as much time in as bright a place as possible.
>>
>>35380686
I think this might just get us there, make him scared of a shadow but not notice us.
>>
>>35380751
The tent is bright because it's where they're doing the organ harvesting, not because of Verwelken paranoia. None of these people really think that a Verwelken coming to fuck their shit up is a real possibility, which is part of the reason that it's going to cause such a panic when word spreads that that's what actually happens.
>>
>>35380676
Nice to have you back.
>>
>>35380751
What would you do if you were worried about bear tossing fire demons?
>>
>>35380817
Have good perimeter defenses, patrols, and the like to notice them early. And a pile of goons who can at the very least slow them down enough to bug the fuck out.

This isn't taking into account what abilities Iptaph has acquired during his tenure as a demon though, it's entirely possible that he has fire resistance.
>>
Thanks for running, great thread!

>Continuing operations at the dead of night
>Only well-lit area in this deathtrap is a small tent that needs to be lit up to work
>Crummy scumborn guards
>Paranoid about Verwelkens.

Yeah, no. If he thought Verwelken attacks were a real threat to consider, he'd at the very least only be here during the day. When the sun is out. You know, the thing that kills Verwelkens dead. Or maybe he'd make the warehouse brighter and stop leaving all these pockets of dark and clutter to hide in.

Add to that the fact that 99% of Verwelkens don't leave Verwelkia and even fewer give a fuck about humans or the demons who cut them up for money and I don't think Iptaph considers Verwelken attacks to be a likely event.
