Part 13

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Hugo of Koblenz, and you have awoken in strange chambers, recovering from a brutal injury to your chest, earned in a duel against a soldier of King Fulk. You were rescued from doom by Sir Raymond of Tripoli at the eleventh hour, and taken to a safe house where you were patched up by a physician by name of Benicio.

Now you lie with more reflection, having spent who knew how many days in basic recovery to struggling to stay alive, barely able to keep awake long enough to hold conversation. But your strength is returning, and you are eating more each day. Your wound is a neat thick diagonal line from left rib to right shoulder, and when your bandages are changed you admire how ugly the knotted stitched up flesh was.

You are strong enough to stand now and hold a conversation, and can call on one of two men.

You open your door a crack. One of Sir Raymond's 'squires' was on duty. A sober young Syrian man a few years your elder named Thomas.

"Could you get Franz for me?" you asked in Greek. He nodded, and went to fetch him. You retired to your bedside, wincing at the pain in your chest, sat and rubbed at it. The strange bumps across your flesh still seemed unnatural and wrong, and your healing flesh closing around them occasionally gave you great pain and discomfort.

Franz came bow legged through the door, an unusually large grin on his usually sour face. It was...off-putting.

"Hugo m'boy!" he said, grabbing you around the shoulders. He did not hug you too hard, but he did kiss your cheek. "Good to see you standing." He rubbed your bristly head, a light crop of blond hair starting to regrow.

He sat and produced an apple, cutting it in half and offering one part to you.

"We have a lot to talk about," you say, stretching your back. So much time bedridden had left you with bed sores. Franz munched his apple and nodded.

You fill him in on all your adventures, leaving nothing out. You mentioned your efforts to find them, of finding Tancred and Solomon, and your adventures in the Abbey. You stuttered a little and maybe didn't tell him everything about the Irish girls, but you covered your entrance to the palace, and when he heard of Wilhelm's fate he breathed a sigh of relief.

"God be good," he said, wiping his face, "I hope the Queen keeps him safe."

Then you talked of meeting with Sabeen. Though again, you did not quite say everything. Except that you wrestled and beat Sabeen fair and square.

Franz snorted. "Good, a woman has no place on the battlefield." Hmm.

Finally you came to your fight with the guard. "Sir Raymond has shown good judgement," Franz said, "He's kept us safe. Me and a couple of the Jaffa soldiers. We are careful how we move and have so far gone undetected. Master Benicio saved my life as well." He showed you his forearm, a knotted arrow mark in the back of it.

Before he can tell you more you suddenly feel very fatigued from your long conversation.

"Rest up lad," he said, motioning to the bed, "We'll speak on the morrow."

You rest, and slumber deep, dreaming of oiled black skin, and a writhing lithe body trapped under your own.

When you awake you find the other Squire, George, putting out a bowl of pottage. He gave you a smile.

SOLOMON: "Ah, my friend, it is good to see you free once again. While you have been imprisoned, I have had my way with Adelheid many times. You must miss the company of women, no?"

WILHELM: "Not really. Every time the serving wenches came to bring me my meals, they ended up tripping and falling onto my dick."

SOLOMON: ...

You ask him to get Franz, and as he leaves you settle down on your bed. Your sword is propped by the bedside and you take it up, draw it. The keen edge had been cleaned and smoothed out. You wondered what had become of the man Raymond had killed when Franz arrives.

He sees you looking at your sword and has a queer expression on his face. None the less he says nothing on what he is thinking, and closes the door behind him.

"Tell me what happened," you said, and he nodded.

"Well when that constable came they came quick," he said, "And had snatched up Orlando and some soldiers before we had time to blink. Sir Raymond pulled me out the back way. They had a couple archers stationed, and did for one of Hugh's men and peppered my arm. Sir Raymond killed two men quick as a flash in our escape, dragged me half way across town. I was useless with that shaft in my arm.

Anyway, he got us to the house of a local knight. Specifically, a local knight who is currently in Oultrejordan with Lord Pagan, but whose young wife is still here. She gave us shelter in exchange for...well, a private settlement with Sir Raymond. Still we would have been done for if Thomas and George hadn't smuggled us out when the Constable and his men turned up. Stable hands originally, but Sir Raymond has taken them on as squires." He took a break from his story to drink some wine. "Anyway. It was while looking for a surgeon for me that we found three of Hugh's men, and we were lucky to find a surgeon at all. Benicio was meant to travel back to Acre a week ago but was waylaid by talk of raiders on the high road. Fortune smiles on us."

Sir Raymond had been disappearing most days on 'excursions' but other than that Franz had little to say. They spent most of their time in doors, away from the windows. Franz seems fidgety to be inside for so long, and asks after Solomon most of all.

>>
"Do you mind sending for Sir Raymond?" you asked. Franz nodded and rubbed his hand over your head. He hitched out the room and left you alone. You sat a while thinking about the cut that had opened you up.

Finally Sir Raymond arrived.

He gave you a grin. "Good to see you up, lad," he said, "You took a nasty cut. We feared you might not wake at all."

You knew little of this Sir Raymond, but he had saved your life and Franz had vouched for him.

"You saved my life," you said.

"Think nothing of it," he replied, going to stand by the window. He had an air of natural authority about him. A man born to inherit great lands and titles. He was very impressive in his bearing, and handled a sword well.

"Why are you really here?" it niggled at the back of your mind. He had invited himself along so suddenly. "What are your real plans in Jerusalem."

He plucked at his cloak and grinned. "To meet a beautiful woman, and arrange a match," he blew the lint out the window before turning to you, leaning against the frame. "Hodierna, of course!" he said, "She is young, unwed, and beautiful. A princess as well. I'd hoped to meet her and arrange a betrothal."

He shrugged. "And I do not mind a bit of adventure in the mean time," he said, "Keeps the wits sharp, and sword arm sharper."

That seemed honest, but you were not one for guile so who knew if he had another unspoken motive.

Saint ann's is a terrible Idea as others have already noted
>>
>>35361577

As compared to a location not being controlled by the Queen? At St Anne's the worst that could truly happen is the lot of us being arrested and placed together with Big Bro. Considering that the Queen already has plans in motion to clear our names, that won't be too much of a hindrance. Unlike say a more secluded location where reporting eyes are not available, our companions could be captured, killed or made hostages.
>>
>>35361508
Inform with this location our allies our split up into four places. Ask him if he thinks we should remain separate or consolidate somewhere. (Those at the palace aren't going anywhere of course.)

>>35361615
The King could also condem members of St. Anne's as conspirators against the crown harboring a large group of armed men with ties to man suspected of conspiracy to rebel. If used well he could undercut the queen's powerbase using us as the scapegoat.
>>
>>35361615
>Unlike say a more secluded location where reporting eyes are not available

It's in the city itself, hardly a secluded place

>our companions could be captured, killed or made hostages.

as opposed to capturing us all & finding contextual evidence that the queen was in collusion with a traitor & planned to rebel with her lover.

It would get everyone at the abbey killed/raped/tortured/exiled & would make the situation unfathomably worse
>>
Instead of suggesting anything directly, you ask Sir Raymond his opinion.

"Where spread out all over Jerusalem," you said, "Should we all gather some place, like a church or here?"

Raymond made a brushing gesture. "No, of course not," he said, "If we all gathered in one place we would attract too much attention. Better to remain hiding, and contacting one another through trusted agents. There is always the risk of discovery, but should we be spread out at least they do not catch us all in a single net." He tapped his foot and rubbed his chin, fingering the cleft dimple in the middle. "Let us keep as we are, but arrange for trusted locals as go between. I have my boys, perhaps someone at your Abbey can be trusted to ferry messages around."

You couldn't think immediately of a good helper there.

"I'll need you to go and arrange it," he said, "When you are strong enough to walk. In the mean time I have some business to deal with. Pigs to feed you understand." He made a chopping gesture and winked, then he left.

You remain alone for the rest of your recovery, your companions drawn on other duties too busy to spare more than small friendly exchanges. Only the Syrian squires for company and they are not much for conversation. Finally after a week you feel strong enough to leave, and Benicio plucks out your stitches. "Go with god," he said, handing you your tattered vestments.

True. Don't need Solobro assaulting and capturing the palace on his own.
>>
You pull up the hood of your robe and give Benicio a smile as you leave. The old physician just waves you away.

Truth, you had seen little of Raymond's hideaway, and you discovered soon enough it was not rightly his alone. It was a hospice, one for lepers, and run by the green crossed knights of Lazarus. You passed a stinking old woman all bound up in rags, being led by a young man in knightly garb with rags of his own on his face. He gives you a friendly nod as you pass.

Suddenly you feel a paranoid itch in your chest, but try to ignore it as you quicken your step.

Jerusalem was growing easier to navigate. You only had to find Jehoshaphat Road to find the way to St Anne's, and directions were freely given by a woman leading a mule to market.

When you came walking through the church doors it was to no fanfare. Only a few novices were about, and lay people of no standing, to notice. And only one of them knew you.

Etain seemed at least a little surprised, if not enthralled by your appearance. "Wasn't sure if you'd be back," she said, "Your friends have been in quite a stir, checking the streets for you." There was something different about her bearing, but you couldn't put a finger on it. "We've given your room over to a woman from Norway."

Solomon and/or Adelheid
>>
You look for Solomon, and think to first check Adelheid's room. Sure enough he was there, with the nun as well. She worked at her desk, writing something. Solomon sat on her bed, a haggard look on his face.

One that lifted at the sight of you.

"Brother," he came off the bed, and took you in a fierce embrace. You returned it. When he released you he was smiling and bright again. Cupped your head in his large hands. "You look older," he said, thumbing at your eyelids, "Are you sick?"

You remembered the lepers and dearly hoped not. What you do is pull down your shirt, and show him your new scar. He whistles at the sight of it, runs a finger down it. It was pretty impressive, in your own opinion.

"That's a story," he said, "And no doubt explains where you have been these last days."

"I got caught in a bad place," you said, "One of Fulk's men. But he was dealt with by Sir Raymond, and they took me to a physician."

It really wasn't much of a story, but the mention of Sir Raymond had Adelheid's attention as well. "We've been looking for that man," she said, "He has been a ghost. Some glimpses here and there, but we cannot find a house to put him to."

"He's with the knights of St Lazarus," you said, "And wishes to stay there. He wants to arrange communication. People to ferry messages between our groups. Someone trustworthy."

Solomon nodded. "Makes sense. But trust is rare currency, least of all in Jerusalem."

"What's happened since I've been away?" you ask. The both scowled in time.

"Nothing good," Adelheid said, "A summons sent out for Count Hugh and Lord Gerard to explain their actions before the high court, and those talking out against the king have been attacked. Common folk and noble alike. I think the stress is building on Fulk and he might do something foolish."

That didn't sound good.

"I'd hoped to go into the palace and speak with the queen," you said.

Adelheid thought on it but shook her head. "I'd wait until the morrow. Ever since a number of Fulk's men have disappeared he has grown suspicious. I was subjected to a search just yesterday, most improperly I might add." She shuddered.

"We'll make up a new room for you," she said, "But be at peace Hugo, you are in the house of God and safe. Enjoy your afternoon."

She ushered you out and Solomon waved a farewell just as the door closed behind you. The two were insatiable.

You decide to check the Church for something interesting. Something about this all has left you feeling foul, and you stride down the corridor in a black mood. You spy Maggie slipping out of a room with a flushed face, smoothing her skirt. She gives you a smile and a wink as she passed.

What the hell was that about? You wondered what was going on with them, suddenly missing the way they teased you earlier.

You grumble, and head into the chapel.

You find a woman kneeling at prayer, her head uncovered. She had dark brown locks trimmed short around her ears and a strong jaw, long lashes. Even kneeling you could see she was tall for a woman.

She opened an eye and noticed you, smiled.

"Good day," she said in a fluting accent. She stood. Maybe she was not as tall as you'd thought, but she was taller than you. She wore simple pilgrim garb but it cut well, her rope belt forming the cloth about her hips more tightly than it otherwise would have.

"I am Helena, from Sweden way, and you?" she offered you a hand.

"Hugo," you said, "Formerly of Germany."

"Formerly?" she asked, cocking her head to the side. She had a wide, generous mouth and very blue eyes. It was always your brother's plan to settle in the Holy Land some where. That made it your plan too. Beat peeling carrots back at the tavern your mother worked at. She nodded. "You must be a new initiate, of course. I am something of a patron of the Church in my home land, though I've taken no vows," she said, "I have a husband instead, unfortunately. What I'd like but to give my life to the Church."

Uh. Very interesting.

She lit a candle and finished her prayer, making the sign of the cross. As she began to leave a squabble started in the corridor. Three initiates were brawling, cussing and striking each other.

"This is a more rambunctious place than I thought it would be," she said, though not unhappily.

What the squabble was about you couldn't say, but it was Maggie breaking it up. "Take sense girls, take sense. This is a house of god!"

She earned a gob in the mouth from a skinny pale girl for that.

You push into the melee and untangle the throng of girls with hard pushes and a glare.

"I'll kill you Margaret Ui Harra!" the skinny pale girl said, her eyes wild, "You vicious slut. We all know you're a whore, so don't act so pious. You deserve to die!"

Maggie, already bleeding lightly, drew back from the girl in shock.

Something in her words flared something up in you, and you bore down on the skinny girl. Who was she, some given to the Church shut-in?

"Have you killed someone?" you demanded, grabbing the girl by the wrists. She was an age with you, and you pushed her to the wall. "Have you watched someone die, violently?" She cried at your grip and twisted her arms, not daring to kick at you. "I have killed men," you said, "I have killed...many men. And had men try to kill me. I have watched friends die. They die and its not good." You shook her, hard, and felt sick to your stomach. "You are a foolish girl. A foolish girl to want to kill some one, to want to see that! You are a fool!" You slapped her across the cheek. "A fool!"

"Hugo," you heard an Irish voice say your name, pull on your sleeve. Maggie and Etain, and newly met Helena, were pulling you off the girl, and you were crying.

"He was my friend!" you said, doubling over from the sick feeling in your gut, "And I watched em'. Watched 'em kill him. Trample him up." You fought your sobs.

"Come on now soldier, come on," Maggie said, pulling you away.

>>
You just couldn't. You were just tired and heavy, your heart too heavy. You let the girls all gather you up, take you into a room. Your fear was coming out in thick tears and croaking sobs.

For Welf, but more for you, and how you'd bled in the dirt of that alleyway, near dead. You had seen inside yourself and felt a brush of death, and saw nothing. You were only dimly aware of your robes being shed, and you heard the gasp.

"Mother Mary!" Etain's voice, high with shock.

"This lad has been through war," you felt a gentle hand along your scar, a mother's hand, "Aye, he's lucky to still be breathing. Hush now young warrior. No shame."

She climbed into the bed and held you, running a hand over your bristly scalp.

"Will he be well?" Maggie asked.

"Oh aye," she said, "In time. Soldier's heart some call it. If you marry a fighting man you may needs deal with it one day, though its never quite the same with each. My father was never counted the same after coming back from war. A quieter man. Sad. He'd sit some days and stare at his scars, never talked of it much. My husband used to be sweet, but came back a man of rage and thunder. It is not meant for men to kill I think, as Jesus knew."

You had nothing left in you, just a hollow feeling. Still sick, but like a stomach after it had vomited up the last bile. Now you just lay, with eyes closed, asleep but unable to sleep.

You felt another person climb into the bed, wrap you on the other side.

"And I thought ye just a boy," Maggie said soft. She had a ring of sadness to her.

You awoke very early, in the early morning dark. Maggie slumbered soft beside you, and Helena to the other. You carefully untangled yourself from between them, slipping out so as not to wake either.

Etain sat by the door, watching you. She was awake.

"You're up," she spoke a gentle whisper.

O, my good lord, why are you thus alone?
For what offence have I this fortnight been
A banish'd woman from my Harry's bed?
Tell me, sweet lord, what is't that takes from thee
Thy stomach, pleasure and thy golden sleep? 900
Why dost thou bend thine eyes upon the earth,
And start so often when thou sit'st alone?
Why hast thou lost the fresh blood in thy cheeks;
And given my treasures and my rights of thee
To thick-eyed musing and cursed melancholy? 905
In thy faint slumbers I by thee have watch'd,
And heard thee murmur tales of iron wars;
Speak terms of manage to thy bounding steed;
Cry 'Courage! to the field!' And thou hast talk'd
Of sallies and retires, of trenches, tents, 910
Of palisadoes, frontiers, parapets,
Of basilisks, of cannon, culverin,
Of prisoners' ransom and of soldiers slain,
And all the currents of a heady fight.
Thy spirit within thee hath been so at war 915
And thus hath so bestirr'd thee in thy sleep,
That beads of sweat have stood upon thy brow
Like bubbles in a late-disturbed stream;
And in thy face strange motions have appear'd,
Such as we see when men restrain their breath 920
On some great sudden hest. O, what portents are these?
Some heavy business hath my lord in hand,
And I must know it, else he loves me not.

You cannot help but cringe at your own behavior, and clutch your arm with self-conscious embarrassment. The girl just watched you.

"I-I am very sorry," you said, shuffling your feet, "That was wrong of me to do."

She rose from her chair and stepped toward you, and touched you on the chin. She wore only her shift, and leaned forward, giving you a light kiss on the lips. Your first such.

"You've no need," she said, and kissed you again and you returned some of it this time, "Be happy Hugo, let's be happy for an hour." She drew you over toward her bed. She looked very wane, as if a breeze might just be enough to brush her apart. She sat upon her bed, and drew herself back, knee raised, her shift falling down around her waist.

You draw away from her, a strange rush of emotions. "You're a lovely girl," you said, very lovely, "But I can't."

Etain gave you eyes that looked so hurt, and she folded in on herself. "Aye," she said, and pulled a blanket 'round her shoulder, "Aye."

You slipped out the room and went to the chapel, took a knee before an image of St Anne. You bowed your head and said a prayer.

Soon though you are joined by another. Maggie took a knee beside you, and gave you a tired smile. "You're a good man Hugo," she said.

Am I? you thought. You didn't think of yourself as a man. A man would have laughed at death and buried himself deep in a willing girl without a second thought. Your brother would have.

Maggie looked up to the icon of St Anne, Grandmother of Christ.

"Thank you for standin' with me," she said, "I know what they say about me. But the truth is..." she laughed, it was short and bitter. "They call me a whore but I've never done more 'an most of 'em and less than others." She laughed but it wasn't with much humour.

You looked at the young woman. She had a quirk to her smile that seemed a touch wicked, and a glint in her eye that boys come to notice in particular girls, but now her eyes were sober, and her smile hard. She looked in ways more like the men-at-arms you'd met than the other novices and nuns.

"Can I trust you Maggie?" you asked, though you already felt you could.

"Can you trust me?" she asked, looking at you. A bit of that wicked grin return. "Aye, mayhap you can."

You may need to discuss it with Solomon and Adelheid first, but you thought her the right choice. She would act as your courier with Sir Raymond.

The day soon dawns and you are scrubbing the sleep from your eyes. Many are cautious around you, giving you funny looks and stepping lightly as you pass, but the men-at-arms and warriors give you respectful nods. Tancred in particular gives you a familiar cuff to the shoulder, almost fatherly.

Solomon is out of Adelheid's room, stretching in the courtyard. Adelheid watched him from a stone bench, only dimly aware of your presence. You cough to catch her attention, and her eyes snap around.

"Shall we be off to visit our friend?" she asked, standing from the stone bench.

"Not just yet," you say, and make your case for Maggie. Adelheid is suspicious at first, but something about the way you talk has her nodding.

"If you think we can trust her, I can trust her," she said, "Now shall we go?"

"One more thing," you said, and backed away. You had to make amends, for a girl you'd embarrassed.

You found her scrubbing the floor of the chapel, hard puffs as she worked her morning chores.

"Can we speak, Etain?" you asked.

"As I work," she replied, attacking the stains that befouled the shrine to St Anne.

"I'm sorry about this morning," you said, "It was just-"

"A bad time for it, I know," she said, and then muttered something in her home tongue, "To be bold for once and turned aside is no easy thing, but I don't hate ye Hugo." She sat back, sweating but satisfied the stain was gone. Then she looked up at you. "But we could a had somethin' special. Somethin' I ain't ever offered no man before." She moved to the next stain and started to work with frustrated grunts. Ignoring you whole, but smiling at her work.

That was as good as you felt things could be for now, and you returned to Adelheid.

"And now, finally, are we off?" she asked, tapping her foot impatiently.

Classic Paladin morale dilemma

If we pass it, we will have a holy avenger
>>
>>35363793
Pass what. Hugo may be shy but he is in no way pious enough to be some kind of paladin. as this anon said last thread before that previous post by OP.

>so basically Hugo is a less charismatic Willhelm with less reverence for the hereafter?

We should make Hugo more rugged and get his WAR up. We know he's a big pussy when he's already a better fighter than wilhelm. We should push his character arc to make him more confident in his abilities not make god his crutch.
>>
>>35363842

Getting there. All these near-death situations will be an impetus for him to seek out even more ways to pump and train his war. Winning honours on the field on battle will pump his confidence.

Now we just need to stop rolling shit.
>>
>>35363842
hang in there anon we'll get there, honestly depending on Wilhelms trial I see it going two ways: if Wilhelm survives Hugo goes on to become something of a white knight (maybe with Swan Iconography) and generally a decent human being, on the other I can see him going full Black knight & spitting upon the church if Wilhelm goes to the gallows.

>>
The Tower of David, the seat of King Fulk, and you were walking in yet again. Armed only with monk robes and a shaved head. You had been on a lion hunt, and this felt more dangerous. You walk with Adelheid, properly dressed in her habit and wimple, striding confidently through the gates.

Templars and Hospitallers both made common ground in the courtyards of the palace. Some knights of Lazarus also, but mostly it was common soldiery in the silver and gold of Jerusalem. You recognised some faces from Wilhelm's arrest. You recognised Sir Blaise the Templar with his white and red crossed eye patch. He talked with another Templar you were familiar with, Sir Joyce. Sir Joyce's eyes caught yours and he frowned, a flash of recognition on his face. But you were lucky, he said nothing.

You watched a crowd surround two men, who matched spears in a bout. "Elias! Elias!" they called for the younger man, who was a handsome man of broad chest and red hair. "Prince Elias!"

The older moved his spear to check a blow. They were both experts. "Joscelin!" some men in unknown livery called, but their aged patron couldn't match the younger prince. Soon he had a spear tip at his throat, and was forced to concede.

"The king's son is a mighty warrior," one soldier remarked.

"He'd make a fine king, too," his fellow added.

You continued to follow Adelheid. One soldier swaggered up, and clapped her hard on the rump, gripping her arse.

"It's a sin that such sweat meat is forbidden," the soldier slurred, pushing Adelheid back 'til she was against the wall. The man seemed drunk, and tugged at her wimple with his other hand.

You grab his wrist and try to pull him off, and earn a back hand for it. "Little eunuch," he spat at you, before turning his eyes back on Adelheid. You come up and tackle the man and he roars as you grab him round the belt, throw your leg between his and toss him over your hip.

If he had not been drunk it might not have worked, but he toppled slow and sure, arms pin wheeling out as he fell. He crashed with a thud and a groan, kicking limply at you. The soldiers laughed, and with them the prince.

"A fierce little terrier you have there!" he said, spear slung over his shoulder. He cuffed your head. "A lady should be so lucky."

"He should be lucky I did not bring my mastiff," Adelheid replied. She curtsied. "Prince Elias of Anjou, it is good to see you. We were not expecting you for some time."

Elias smiled. "Oh yes, you are my little step-sister's tutor. I remember you now," he took her by the hand and bowed with a kiss, "Be sure to keep her safe from more rouges like that German. I'd hate to have more competition now that she's given up the Church."

What did he mean by that?

Elias strode off, hailing the Templars.

Adelheid gave a small hiss. "That man is bad news," she said, but took back to the path. You dogged her steps through an ornate corridor and round a flight of steps, 'til you came to a familiar chamber.

Theodore looked especially grey today. He bowed low. "Welcome," he said, his voice very shaky.

"You are well Theodore?" Adelheid asked with no small concern.

"A cold my dear," he said with a smile.

He admitted you both, and you saw pretty Hodierna and little Baldwin. Baldwin played with a toy knight and horse, showing it to his aunt.

"Very nice my prince," she said. He saw you and stumbled over, pushed you hard.

"You're it!" he said, and stumbled off with a giggle.

You hitch up your robes and chased after the prince. He gave a high pitched squeal of delight. You ran just fast enough to keep him running, but not so fast you caught him.

Hodierna clapped. "Go Winnie, go!" she cheered. Finally you caught him and he gave a grunt and smiled, crashing on the floor. He sat up with his gap toothed grin, tugged your robe. He pulled out a piece of pear and offered it to you. Being a royal, and the crown-prince at that, you could not refuse him. You took the mushed up pear, wolfed it down.

"And what brings you today?" Hodierna asked Adelheid.

She looked to you.

"We'd like to talk to the Queen," you said. Hodierna nodded. "And maybe my brother, if I can?"

Hodierna smiled. "Of course. I can arrange that."

"We can send for drinks while we wait," she said, motioning to a chair for you to sit. You sit and pull your legs up. You were still pretty miserable from last night. A steward came with a jug of cordial, and poured you a glass before leaving, the jug remaining on the table. It was elderberry, very sweet.

Baldwin did some tumbling. It must be very boring for him some times, you thought. Cooped up here with no other boys to play with. He didn't seem to have a friend outside his aunts and cousin. You look to Hodierna. She really was quite beautiful, as much as her sisters. Perhaps more so, than Alice at least. And yet she was already mid-twenties and still unmarried.Raymond meant to make a bid for her hand, though he was some years her junior.

You decide it was best not to inquire. She might take the question the wrong way.You drank more of your cordial and let the silence stretch out. The Queen was taking some time. Hodierna stifled a cough and drank some of her own, eventually pouring a cup for Baldwin as well.

"Now don't spill it Winnie!" she said with a chiding finger, "Your nice new tunic was very expensive. There are poor boys in Damascus that will kill to own a shirt so nice." The little boy took her warning seriously, drinking slow and carefully.

She huffed. "I feel like all my time is spent with children," she sad, "I'm a royal nanny."

"Uh," you replied around your cup.

"So Squire Hugo, tell me," she leaned against the table, a bright smile on her face, "How are you enjoying Jerusalem?"

You blinked, and thought on all your adventures. The near deaths, the rape threats, the break down. You thought about wrestling with Sabeen. You thought about the awful hair cuts. You thought about the lepers. Mostly you thought - "I think it's making me go bald," you said the thought out loud, just staring into your cup and the dim bald reflection in it.

Hodierna and Adelheid exchanged a look.

"A ringing endorsement of our city," she replied with a very forced chuckle.

You coughed, and took another sip. This sitting in rooms and talking to women was more your brother's thing. You were meant for riding horses and scouting for enemies in the hinterland, scrabbling over rocks with only your tough little horse for company, a knife ready to deal with any surprises. Alone, with the safety of your friends hanging on your shoulders. It was where you were most at ease.

"The Queen!" Theodore's strained voice called.

"Oh do get some rest Theo!" you heard the Queen say just as she entered, an admonishing look for the sick old man, "I have a dozen young bucks that are keen to guard my door."

"A soldier does not rest when-" but the door closed on his reply.

The Queen heaved a sigh, smoothing the front of her dress across her chest. "Men can be so disgustingly stubborn some times," she said.

"Women can be a pain as well," Hodierna replied, "So don't think the alternative is any more pleasant."

You squirmed in your chair at the sight of the Queen. She wore her hair up today, held with silver pins. It must be some new fashion. And she had a warm smile for you.

"And what is the purpose of your visit Squire Hugo?" she asked, "Some news, or just the pleasure of my company?"

"Your pleasure is company...is that is your company is very pleasurable," you said, "B-but I'm not here for pleasure." You tried to sound like your brother, but your crack of puberty in your voice broke the illusion before you could really start and you stumbled over your words. You bury your face in your cup and try to ignore their maternal smiles. The line had been so smooth in your head.

"I might have remembered something, it could be important for my brother," you set aside your cup, "In our camp outside the city we have a prisoner named Mehmed ibn Omar, cousin of the Caliph of Egypt."

"Al-Hafiz?" she didn't smile, "He is weak. And while this is not nothing, it will not move Fulk over much. If you had caught some noble of Damascus mayhap. But he holds no fear of Egypt."

"We also have the corpse of Shams ibn Shams, and he is a Turk," you said.

"Well, that we can trade for something," she said, "The Moslems are particularly proud of how they handle their dead. If his remains are treated with care, we might gain some good favour with this gesture."

"A-and also!" your news was not impressing her as you had hoped, "I've found Sir Raymond! He is safe, a-and he wants to marry your sister! He told me so!"

The Queen and Hodierna exchanged a look. "More suitors for Iovetta? It hasn't even been a month."

"No, not Judith!" you pointed, "Her!"

"Me?" Hodierna said, eyes wide and cheeks puffed.

"Her?" Melisende added. They looked to each other for a long second. Then they burst into laughter. "T-The poor hound. Sniffing at the wrong tree." She wiped a tear from her eye, a deep honest chuckle from her lips. She mustered herself soon though, or near about to muster. "But still, Pons is a friend and his son may be a good ally to have. What think you Hod?" she asked with a broad smile.

Hodierna shrugged. "So long as Rose can accompany me, I do not mind," she said, "But let it be a few years from now. They boy can wait."

"The boy can wait," Melisende agreed, still bubbling a little with mirth. She looked back to you, crossed her legs and planted her hands on her knee, "And is there anything else?"

"Uh, I'd hoped to see my brother, if I may," you said.

Melisende's smile slipped. "I am not sure that can be done right now. My husband watches everyone, me most of all. Perhaps something can be arranged on another day, and I will send for you when it can, but not today. Fulk watches that cell very closely, though he does no harm to the one inside it."

Your heart fell at the news, but Melisende touched your arm, noting your crestfallen features. "Be of good cheer. Though you have not spared him a trial, you have given us good chances. It is only a game of waiting, and hope that nothing mad happens in the mean time."

She leaned back, Hodierna pouring her a cool cup of elderberry cordial. "Now is there anything else?" she asked.

"It's probably not a good idea to see her, but could you tell me how Judith-sorry, Princess Iovetta, is doing?" you asked, "A-and tell her we're all thinking about her too, and hope she is well."

Melisende took a deep breath. "My baby sister is getting better, in a way," she said, "She has stopped crying so much, but I'm worried she's planning something foolish. She has been trying to smuggle things to the stables. I think she's planning a rescue. Very romantic, but damned short sighted." She rubbed at her temple and sighed. "I do not think she trusts me as much as she used to. And Fulk bringing his damned son to court her has not helped. My husband is many things. Subtle is not one of them." She looked over to her son and wore a worried frown, a hint of fear in her eye. She slipped out of her chair and gestured to the boy. "Come give mommy a hug my little prince!" She said, and the boy trotted over very regally to embrace his mother. But then she was tickling his arm pits and he was squealing with laughter, and she was laughing too, but with a nervous edge to it.

"Oh my little duckling," she said, burying her face in his hair, "Promise me you'll be a good man."

"I promise," he said with great solemnity, but then she blew into his hair, making him laugh again. Then she looked up to you.

"My son could use friends," she said, "Would you be a friend to him, Squire Hugo?"

You looked at the small grinning boy. He had no idea what the world was. A complete innocent. But for how much longer?

You nodded. "I'll be his friend," you said.

Melisende gave a smile, reached up and kissed you lightly on the cheek. "A friend of my son is a friend of mine," she said, smiling wider as you burned red. She drew a cloth from up her sleeve, a silver cloth with gold embroidery, and handed it to you. "Take my favour, so that others might know you are my friend," she said, with a subtle tip of her head.

You put the silk cloth up your sleeve and nodded. You think you understood.

Now it was best for you to leave. "Say goodbye to Hugo," Hodierna prompted little Baldwin.

"Goodbye Hugo!" he said, waving you off. You returned it with a small wave of your own.

As Adelheid joined you out the doors and began to leave the palace, you noted someone as you crossed the courtyard.

You swore an oath Orlando. An Oath to guard your rightful Queen and the Kingdom from predation both from within and without.

Did you guys not see this coming after our capture? He moaned and groaned about his lands, got drunk and felt looked down on by Wilhelm. Then Wilhelm got them both caught and his band scattered to the winds. The conspiracy is unraveled and his cousin is in the hot seat. He swore the oath too sure, but it'd be easy enough to weasel out of it. There is a small chance that he hasn't actually switched loyalty, but its easy to doubt.

Depends. From the King's faction's perspective, Orlando is a recent addition and who bring naught to the table. Lands will likely still go to the frank lords that King Fulk favours until they ascertain Orlando's loyalty or they see that hes not a cock.
>>
>>35365848
Of course there is. Give land to foreigners to draw more investments into the latin kingdom.

The King can pay knights easily. Hardly bad to be near all the court nobles either.
>>
>>35365756

There was a lot of discussion about it when we first got arrested and it was pretty common consensus that he might flip.
>>
"Sister, excuse me," you said, ducking away from Adelheid. You kept your head lowered, earning a 'lucky rub' from one guard, but keeping Orlando from noticing you. You followed him through a corridor and around a bend. He seemed quite oblivious to your shadowing him. You follow him down a flight of steps, until you come to a row of bolted doors.

A guard sat out the front of the door.

"Here to see the prisoner again sir?" the guard asked.

"Yes," he said, "Of course."

The guard nodded, got up and wandered down the hall, whistling as he went. Orlando slid open a slate to look into the cell.

"How are you today Wilhelm?" he said.

Your brother's name pricked at your ears, you inched closer, as close as you dared.

"Oh, I'm quite well," you heard him say, "The service here is consistent at least, two meals a day and fresh straw to sleep on. Really I couldn't ask for more." You heard him laugh. "Well, perhaps a couple things. My woman, first and foremost. But also I'd just like my hands around your throat right now."

Orlando blanched. "Do not be that way my friend," he said, "This is not forever. I am your advocate out here. I am working for your release."

"You're working for yourself, you rat," you saw the door visibly shake under the kick of your brother's foot, "It all comes back to the same thing with you."

Orlando had the grace to look ashamed. "If it was just my lands it would be nothing," he said, clutching at the bar, "But he has promised me Sidon, Wil, Sidon! If I'll just give him Hugh and my cousin, and the other highborns. Not you Wil, you are just a footnote. When I have Sidon I will have you released into my service, you will be free."

"Damn you Orlando!" you saw Orlando retreat as a hand reached through the bar, "Damn you, oath breaker, traitor! I do not want you! I do not want your freedom!"
>>
"You do not think they would let you have her, did?" he said in a voice very soft, eyes quite wide, "She is a princess of Jerusalem. See reason my friend."

He said it in German, a language Orlando did not speak. "You loveless fool. You do not know her, not as I do. It is not for others to let her do anything or give her to anyone." Then he laughed, and you worried for him. He spoke next in Greek, his voice strong and calm. "I pity you Orlando," he said, "It was pity for you then, and it is pity for you now. You are still that lost, friendless boy. But more friendless than ever, I think."

"Stay strong my friend," Orlando said, his face tight with shame and anger, "I will ensure you are pardoned." Then he called back the guard, and walked away with head bowed low.

You casually walk away. No one gives you trouble or cries out. You pass by the courtyard, and in it spot a broad grey man speaking with Prince Elias. He has a hard slab of a face, as if it were carved from ringed wood, and wore a fierce beard. He had eyes set deep under a heavy brow. He was of a height with the Prince. No, he was a little taller. A little more muscled despite his age. He was missing two fingers on his right hand, just the very tips.

He did not wear his crown, but he did not have to. The way the prince wilted under his stare, the way he carried his shoulders as if a weight were rested across them. A weight no man should bear but had to bear none the less.

King Fulk.

You pulled up your hood and walked faster.

"I do not know who is worse," you heard him say. He did not yell, but his voice carried. "The vultures at my borders, or the ones in my home. It will be Zengi or the Count of Jaffa that ruins this realm."

"Perhaps the one in your bed," Prince Elias said.

"Mind your tongue," the king replied, a sudden flash of anger in his voice, "None shall speak ill of my Queen. She is Jerusalem."

You kept walking.

You found Adelheid waiting outside, and walked with her back to the church.

You were troubled by what you'd heard. Orlando had been an odd friend, but a friend none the less. Your heart was clutched by a vice, you did not know what to do.

Speak with Adelhid since she's the most politically connected

Better not mention he 2 for 1. Gets people stingy.

Sabeen, we must inform her of what happened.

Solomon with Adelheid, tell them of Orlando. But make sure Solomon doesnt do anything stupid
>>

Out of the palace, and into the lead of an army of rebels about to storm the place, right?

Oh wait

Besides Cheng Yu is the better fit if you want to shoehorn in the Cao Cao advisor since he massacred innocent villages for food.
>>

It's just so played out. You are running the joke into the ground. At least save that for when someone does something worthy. Like when Solomon went full LU Bu

You're drunk, though, go home

You decide to call a meeting of all your companions in the Church, and do so in Adelheid's room. Tancred takes a seat on the bed, frowning down as Maggie sits on the floor in front of him, giving him a grin as she looked up.

Solomon stood by Adelheid's desk, and she sat, just a little too close to him.

You felt a little alone.

"Alright," you take a breath, and tell them of what you saw and spoke of with the queen.

All went fine until you came to Orlando. And as you spoke you saw Solomon's face turn into a terrible scowl, clutching the hilt of his shotel.

"He was one of us," he spoke with thick furious spit flying from his mouth, "We rode together, fought together."

"Easy Solomon," you said.

But Solomon drew his sword, cut a gash across his forearm.

"Traitor!" he said, holding up his dripping arm, "When next I see him. He dies!"

"Easy Solomon!" you say, reaching out for him, "We can't kill anyone, we can't cause a stir."

"Can't we?" Adelheid asked, tapping her chin, "Would killing this man not help secure our own fortune?"

"If he is a threat to Count Hugh, he needs to die," Tancred said.

Quick QnA
>>
>>35366826

Adelaide is a pretty high tier political operator, she knows Orlando is gonna hurt their chances sinces he's a direct witness. Could see her going for it if it's not too risky
>>
>>35366850
oh jesus fuck thanks for running

anything not worthy of spoilers to share?
>>
>>35366850
So impressions on all the shit that happened these two threads? Bad decisions, good decisions etc?

Also are we back to Wilhelm next session or more Hugo?
>>
>>35366850
Has Blaise really been hanging around castles doing nothing since he became a man of god?
>>
>>35366850

Things done well, things done poorly?

Could Hugo have died in the duel?

Will the trial be next thread?
>>
>>35366850
If the Klob bros both die, can we play a psychic like that city guard that could track down Hugo every time he stepped into the streets of Jerusalem?

Seems like Orlando actually think he is doing Wil a favour
>>
>>35366971

I can see where he's coming from but he's still a dick
>>
>>35366850

How'd we do?

And thank you for running the game!
>>
>>35366932
What are you even trying to say?
>>
>>35366971
>Deliver his cousin, as planned with the Jews and himself
>Deliver Hugh, securing hegemony without civil war
>Save Wilhelm and set him up proper

He is. Iovetta is something he can't handle
>>
>>35366899
>Could Hugo have died in the duel?
Yeah, if you'd crit failed the recovery roll.

I was lying when I said 'don't panic'.

> Things done well, things done poorly?

A lot of them weren't so much wrong options as they were alternate ones leading to different things. Nothing was done especially poorly.

>>35366971
He does.

>>35366885
If you'd gone by ship to Jaffa you'd have been on the same ship as Blaise. Just an interesting little tidbit.
>>
Iovetta is going to fuck everything over with a stupid escape plan right as Wilhelm is due to be released. Mark my words.
>>
>>35366882

Find out next time on Crusader Quest!

>>35367051

If Hugo died, what would have happened?

what day and what hour?

All Wilhelm has to do is realise its a stupid move and stay where the hell he is.

And I mean lovettas a smart girl but she's really failing those INT checks
>>
>>35367113
Doesn't matter. So long as some sort of escape plan exists and gets discovered they'll both be in deep shit.
>>
>>35367069
Not like anyone will stop it.

>>35367113

She's a 14 year old experience her first love, give her a break.

Still smarter than Juliet of Capulet
>>
>>35367096
Switch back to Wilhelm.

Which would be a thread of sitting in his cell doing nothing. Then the trial.
>>
>>35367127
Well here's hoping Hugo & the Queen can filter that shit.

Pretty much. Which is why I switched to Hugo in the first place, really. Keeps things interesting and stuff to do instead of sitting on your hands.

Y'know how I said I some times 'cast' folks.

Tancred is modeled off Sam Elliott, but younger.
