It is the most exciting time of the day!

You have just been given a whole ten silver as advance pay for your duty as a censor, even before you actually go out and count the number of people that live outside Reboldeux. Then you met the cartographer that is going to accompany you for your exploration charter, who has a friend that will also come (until the first stop), and the cartographer in question is a were-rabbit with long, perky ears and you didn't have the chance to stare at her butt but you presume she also has a puffy tail.

It's almost a pity you and Tahenohan are the explorers and therefore practically expected to be ahead, it would have been nice to stare at something like that for a long trip.

You force yourself to stop thinking about bunnygirl butts and it comes surprisingly easy to you: it's time for shopping!

You've been wearing one set of rough travel clothes for too long. Even if you just want to buy more travelling clothes, you'll have to get others. Unfortunately, you're in a hurry so you can't have a tailor make you one, you must hope they have something about your size available that they're willing to part with, and you'll have to cope with the fact it's hardly going to be fit for you. At least general survival tools, such as bedrolls, rarely need to be custom fit.

You'll also have to think of something to give Tahenohan too. The half-elf barbarian necromancer that you befriended is probably used to just running around in skimpy outfits in rough wastelands for weeks, but that doesn't mean she can't take advantage of the wonders of civilization.

You also remember Bryld told you the wilderness is full of edible food, but scarce in freshwater. You might want to remember that.

You decide that since the land is fertile and lots of things grow up spontaneously and are also edible, you really should go grab what you are actually going to need: supplies.

You can't really expect to consider yourself an explorer, or adventurer, and be taken seriously when you don't even have a rucksack to your name.

As expected, general stores are very easy to find, but you don't need to find someplace large or with exotic equipment: you need something small but well-supplied, and possibly with an owner that isn't a gossip-monger. You wouldn't want your cartographer to learn that you are a complete newbie the wrong way, there's still the possibility that she might decide against coming with you, which would make it a lot harder to get a new one if word about your lack of experience spreads.

You're probably just being paranoid but hey.

You enter the Gilded Glade, a small shop with a fully wooden front, a style that doesn't mix stone and wood like most other buildings, especially those built along the coast. Considering its size and location, you believe there used to be a gap between two other houses some years ago, because this one shop, along with several others, have glaringly different styles of architecture than the rest of Reboldeux. Maybe the town did expand already, and it still isn't enough.

Your entrance is welcomed by the ringing of a bell as soon as you open the door, which rings again when Tahenohan closes it behind her. The inside is well-lit, with windows on the street front and the opposite to compensate for the lack of light coming in from the sides; two relatively small shelves hold several small, daily utility goods in display and the whole place is well-cared for, the wood is lucid and smells faintly of lavender.

"Hello and welcome to the Gilded Glade", a thirty-something man with short brown hair smiles at you from behind a counter, "How can I help you?".

You expected your own incompetence to show earlier or later, but it's the spirit that counts, right? You know little to nothing about mermaids and politics and economics either and there you are doing all of the above already. Certainly exploring some passive wilderness that doesn't seem to hold much danger cannot be much of a problem to someone as resourceful as you.

"I'm going to explore the wilderness on official business", you make it sound important and try to not give the impression you're begging for advice, "What do you think I should get? I have never been in a tropical land before".

"Hmm...", the nondescript owner strokes his short goatee for a moment. He has a book and a few mechanical components on the counter, as if he was busy trying to fix something, but you can't tell what it was since all of the pieces have been dismantled, "Never been in the tropics before?".

"Never", you admit.

"Well, the weather here is warm all year around. We're currently in the dry season, and we're going to be in the wet season in a few months, but expect rain to start increasing soon", he explains, "There's no such thing as summer or winter: it's always hot, the real difference is how much water you're going to wade through".

He chuckles, "You don't need a tent because of the cold, you're going to need it because otherwise you might as well sleep in a lake of mud. I also advise you explore as much as possible before the wet season comes, most people from the West underestimate just how much rain can come down in one day".

"I see", you nod. That's certainly helpful to note, "I'm going to need the full package. Bedroll, waterskins, flint and steel, a knife and some rope for starters". You pause for a moment, better not go overboard in case the costs begin to skyrocket. Your budget is higher than you've had in a while but not infinite.

You pause for a moment, then look at Tahenohan, "Do you need something too? Think we're missing anything?".

"We're going to need an iron pot. For cooking. And then another iron pot", she has that manic smile of hers but doesn't explain why she needs the second one, "Oh, but it can be smaller. Oh, and chalk, I'm running out".

"Right. Two iron pots, one for cooking and one small, and a block of chalk. Also, add a second bedroll, a tent and a rucksack. Are you going to need one too, Tahenohan?".

"I have my bag", she says with pride. A cloth bag full of- you still have no idea what she's actually carrying in there.

"That will be all. Unless I forgot something important?".

The shopkeeper ponders your list for a moment and looks down, tracing his finger on the wooden counter as if drawing something with his mind, "Tent, two bedrolls, rucksack, two pots, chalk, waterskins, flint and steel, knife and rope. Well, that's quite a bit of gear", he chuckles, "Are you going far?".

"We're exploring".

"Then I think you'll also need a lantern", he nods, "Don't go for torches, they're unreliable in this damp weather. Properly closed lanterns are a better choice. Go for the bullseye sort, you're going to need to point them properly anyways, when it gets dark here it's dark for real, a normal lantern would just make you a target for predators".

"Is the wildlife that dangerous?", you ask.

"Not if you know what you're doing". Simple, really, but you don't really know what you're doing, you're just improvising. "By the way, may I ask just how long this expedition is going to be? If I'm not prying too much. I just want to be of help", he amiably asks, "Also, will it be just two of you?".

"It's four of us actually", you explain, "Why? Is it important?".

"Just to get an idea of how many tents you're going to need, mostly. And whether it will make sense to invest in sharper implements or not. You might want to bring a machete around with you", and he walks around the counter to reach the shop area with you, opening a closed wooden armoire, painted green and with floral decorations, grabbing what seems to be a short but thick sword in a leather sheath, "You look strong enough to hack through vegetation with this. The thicker parts are going to be nearly impenetrable even if you have something like this though, and I don't advise trying to use it on wildlife. A self bow would serve you better for food, and it's not a good idea to confront predators directly".

You were kind of hoping to not meet dangerous predators in the first place, but he has a point. Even if you do, you have zero combat training and only know which way is up on a blade because you can handle a knife. For cooking and utility, of course, but you can recognize a handle when you see it.

"If it's not many of you, you might not need to invest in incense or wax. It's for the insects, you see. There's plenty outside, and even in town at dusk and dawn, but my best advice is to just get used to them. They're not strictly dangerous, just very annoying".

"How much will it be?", you then ask. You must, even if you're afraid of the answer.

"For the whole package? Well, considering the tent, the pitons and the pots, which are really the most expensive parts, I can't ask less than five silver", he smiles, "But it's a good deal, I'm practically throwing in the chalk and waterskins for free".

That's half of your advance pay. Ouch. You weren't as rich as you thought after all.

You took a bath today, you got a bureaucrat to give you an advance pay, sure you can handle a merchant.

"Five silver? I know I'm asking for plenty in very short notice but I can't be the only explorer asking for supplies before departing".

"Oh?", the shopkeeper sounds at least curious as to what you have to say.

"I could understand paying premium if they were goods you weren't expecting to sell often, but the fact you have them all ready immediately means you routinely sell this sort of equipment, which means there are plenty of people that leave on adventures or out of town entirely. At this point, being able to sell the goods that you might have a harder time getting rid of should be your first priority".

You think back on your shopping list and then point at the machete, "This, for example, doesn't look like a household item. If there's something you should throw in for free it's this, I can't imagine there being that much request considering how I've been told exploration charters aren't taking off very easily. I don't think you were expecting to sell that chalk for much more than a couple copper any ways and the waterskins can't be worth that much. Truth is, you aren't really offering me much for free".

You ponder on the list for a while, swaying your tail as you do so, "I think four silver would be a more honest price".

The shopkeeper stares at you for a while, silently, then smiles, "My, you're observant, aren't you?".

"So I've been told".

"But you're also the only couple in your four-man team that needs all this stuff in short notice. I don't really think that puts you in the position to haggle, does it?", he keeps his smile. He doesn't seem angry, "If you drop the machete, I can bring it down to four silver and ten copper, but any more and it'd be a severe loss for me".

Ten copper. It's twenty to a silver, so it's practically four and half silver.

>>

You don't want to pay half your advance pay in the first stop. Even if you understand it's probably the most important of them all.

"Tahenohan, would it be okay if we only take one pot?", you ask her, "We'll still get the chalk though".

She ponders about it for a moment, then shrugs, "Yeah. I can live without".

Wow, was it really that easy all along?

"Just one pot, then", you tell the merchant, "Four silver for that, then?".

"Four and ten".

"It's a whole pot!", you pretend to sound surprised, "In iron, no less!".

"Fine, four, but you get the small one", the merchant sighs, "It's four of you, you'll still be able to eat enough. Or you'll have to cook twice every time".

"Deal". You've been through much worse, seriously. Even just having an iron pot is a lot to you. As a matter of fact, most of the time you cooked in copper pots or cauldrons, but iron does in fact serve you a lot better, especially if you want to salt what you're eating. And considering you're on a port town, you don't need to pay salt's weight in gold to get some.

Especially because there's a desalination plant. That must be handy. You wonder how it even works.

You get all of your equipment ready and shell out the four silver you agreed on. It almost hurts to part from that much money in one go, but you rationalize it as an investment.

Tahenohan helps you carry everything outside. Most of it fits in your rucksack or can be hung outside. It's sturdy, in tough leather and very serviceable-looking, you feel especially satisfied about it, it's probably the part that's going to last you more. Or at least you hope.

"Sorry about the pot", you tell Tahenohan, "I had to drop something".

"It's okay", she shrugs again, "I didn't really need it".

That's a half-elf for you.

You can't go around wearing the same clothes all the time. They're also starting to deteriorate. They're getting thinner by the elbows and knees and you think one of your sleeves is starting to loosen and will likely start ripping from the shoulder in due time. None of the damage is embarrassing in a lewd way, your clothes are just socially embarrassing, as in they make you look like a worn traveller at first but then it gets kind of obvious you're really not much more than a hobo.

You have good looks for one, but that only goes so far to console you.

Finding a seamstress isn't difficult. You find one shop in the middle of the old marketplace that you saw when you were looking for the Golden Boar Inn not long ago and decide to check it out. As you make your way through stalls selling food and various other merchandise, including trinkets of all sorts, you reach an open building where a few women and some men are busy tending looms and sewing clothes.

It's somewhat chaotic-looking to an outsider but you immediately realize it's fairly typical for a craftsman's enterprise where the amount of workers passes the half dozen. There's less than that number right now, but then again not everyone works all the time.

One of the older women slowly sits up from her hair to greet you. There's also a couple very young children playing silently in a corner with some rag dolls, but they seem to ignore you and avoid getting in the way of anyone working. "Greetings", the elderly-looking woman says; her back is bent enough, even when she should be upright, that it's clear she has passed the age in which she should be working in such a place, "May I help you, young miss?".

"I need two extra sets of clothing. Sturdy and serviceable", you explain; you instinctively speak lower and a bit louder since you assume the woman is going to be a bit hard of hearing at her age, "About our sizes", you tap your chest and Tahenohan's shoulder, who smiles at the old woman, "Do you have any in stock?".

"There's no clothes in the dock, darling", and she laughs, showing off a few missing teeth, "Maybe you want to know if we have some in stock?".

"Yes". You silently pray she's going to call someone younger to help. And she does. You should try this silent prayer thing more often.

A younger woman, though still past her thirties, stops sewing a long, light blue dress that would be very nice to wear for an evening out with someone and comes to the older woman's side, looking at you and Tahenohan as if sizing you up.

"Dear, help these two ladies out, I think they need some more clothes to wear. The little one in particular looks like she came from the wrong side of the world", the old lady explains, not even trying to whisper that last comment. You're not sure if it's meant to be offensive but Tahenohan doesn't seem to mind.

"We need two sets of clothing. Sturdy, fit for travel", you explain the younger woman, who looks attentive enough to make you feel like this is going somewhere, "And we're also curious as to how people dress in these lands".

The woman remains silent, staring at you for a while, and speaks up only when you were beginning to wonder if you didn't rather talk with grandma again, "Well, airy clothes are preferred here. Those who can afford it use silk, most other people just wear looser clothes and strip the sleeves and cut the chest a bit".

"Get her something to show that cleavage", the granny nudges the younger woman, "It's all the rage here, what with the excuse of heat. Eeeeehehehehe!".

"Do you have something in stock already? We couldn't bring much with us and we'd rather buy used than have everything commissioned in one go", you explain.

"For your size?", the woman wonders, sizing you up again. Most travel clothes should be unisex or good fit for both genders, so you wonder if she's also taking into account the fact you might be okay wearing clothes used by a man.

You don't have to specify you are, though, because the granny interrupts her hesitation, "Don't we still have that outfit? The one with the pleated satin stock and the double-breasted coat? It also came with nice beige trousers if I recall".

"But, that belongs to mr. Highbur-".

"He's never going to come and pay for it", the granny's voice gets harsh all of a sudden, "This lady needs it more than he is willing to shell silver for".

"Yes, of course", the other woman immediately agrees, "If wearing men's clothes is okay with you, we also still have my brother's old shirt, coat and trousers. I just need to fix the button- Oh", you see that she notices just now that you have a tail, "... I... Well, I can also adjust for... That".

"May I try them out?", you ask. You're going to have to if you want to make sure you can actually put them on.

"Well, sure, let me fetch them", the woman says, taking a step back and looking at Tahenohan, "Uhm... I'll see if I can't bring something for her too".

As she leaves, the older woman gives you a smile, "Do you also want us to fix these old clothes for you?".

"Would it take long? I have a tight schedule", you ask.

"Eh. Depends. We can make sure they won't rip in an afternoon, but if you want us to restore them a bit, we're going to need a week. They're in bad shape. Going to have to substitute the sleeves at least. Oh yes", she nods to herself. It's going to be long and probably expensive.

"How much is it for used clothes, anyways?", you ask. Money is going to be very important. Indeed.

"Ech. Considering we'll have to fit your tail in? Don't look at me like that lady it's more than just cutting a hole", you have to agree with her, considering the shape of your tail you can't just cut a round hole in clothes and expect it to fit. You have to make a proper opening with a small button to close it right above the tail so you can fit it in and out without the trousers falling on you. Of course it's a lot easier with skirts, but they're not fit for exploring, "I can already tell you that Highwhatever person's clothes are one full silver. They're worth more than that, but I want to sell them just to spite him. He asked for a simple work and never paid, he probably thinks he owns the place just because his family's rich. Bah!".

One silver for one set of clothes. Good thing they're used and she wants to spite the previous owner, what if they were new?

"Camerin's old clothes? Fifteen copper, and that's just because I had no idea his sister still kept them around. Good for you though, for your friend over there...", she looks up and down at Tahenohan, her expression imperturbable, "Heh, tell you what. Four silver and we'll give you each a pair of new clothes from our pile. Take what fits you. We'll do that thing for your tail, we'll do it proper, and not just a huge hole to show off your ass. Eeeehehehehe!".

She seems to be having fun.

"Could you also repair these clothes?", you pull your own at the chest a bit to show you mean the ones you're wearing, "For four silver it shouldn't be a problem, right?".

"These old rags? Ech", she doesn't look convinced, "Why don't you just sell them to us? Five copper. It's the most you'll ever get from them, don't bother repairing it, we'll just recycle the fabric anyways".

You realize you don't have particular attachment to your clothes. Certainly not of the emotional sort. They're just clothes, they're not even hand me downs from an important sibling that you never even had, so you really don't see the point in keeping them if you're going to get new, better ones. And the old woman has a point: repairing them isn't really worth it.

"Don't you think these clothes should be worth ten copper instead? They served me well for a very long time and they're still usable".

The woman laughs. The unnerving laugh of the elderly who no longer have any sense of shame. "And that's why you've come to look for more clothes, right? You may have some nice tits an' ass, lady, but that ain't working on me".

"It's still worth more than five copper", you insist with a determined frown, "You'd never sell a whole set for just five copper, no matter how old and used. That's insane".

"Well if you're really attached, I can go up to seven. But don't test my patience lady, and don't forget we're doing you a favour already with the free fittings".

The younger lady then returns with a large basket full of clothes. She looks at you, then at the older woman, then at the set of wooden stairs that lead up to the first floor. The ceiling is relatively tall, you just noticed, because the flight is a bit longer than you'd expect from a normal house.

"Would you like to try them on upstairs?", she asks. It's actually a rhetorical question, of course you're not going to strip in the middle of a workplace in front of everyone.

Well, why waste time? It's not like you've never been naked with one another already. More than once. Despite knowing each other for what, two days? Counting this one?

The woman leaves the basket with the two of you in a small, empty room and says she'll be right outside in case you need anything. There's nothing of note there except for a closed crate and a bed lacking a mattress.

Looking at the basket of clothes, you see four that fit more or less your size. The first is the one the old lady described: a red tunic with a double-breasted brown coat with a pleated satin stock and beige trousers. Then there's the set that belonged to the woman's brother from what you understand: a white shirt with dark blue trousers and a long tailed coat. Then there's a blue painted doublet with slashed yellow sleeves and breeches in the same fashion and an embroidered collar, and a doublet in glazed linen that's supposed to go with a loose leather jerkin and a red cape, and red breeches slashed green.

You can't help but see they're all men's wear. Not surprising, considering your size and the lack of time to have fitted clothes. Tahenohan's are all much more feminine instead: she too has a glazed linen doublet but it's whiter and goes with a black wheel skirt and petticoat of the same colour. The second set has a long-sleeved dress with a low-cut cleavage and lace cuffs and a small ruff, the colour between red and dark blue, and a simple embroidered skirt. Then there's a simple yet well-sewn blue chemise decorated with bird patterns and lace cuffs that goes with a pair of thighs of the same colour and a darker pareo to be worn on top. Her fourth option is a yellow linen smock with a low, square neckline, a black bodice and somewhat worn leather pants that were painted dark, but they're worn enough that they don't match the bodice's colour any more.

You can pick two for each...

Since I ran out of space (damn 2000 character limit) here's the greentext version of all the options.

For Lillith:
>A red tunic with a double-breasted brown coat with a pleated satin stock and beige trousers.
>A white shirt with dark blue trousers and a long tailed coat.
>A blue painted doublet with slashed yellow sleeves and breeches in the same fashion and an embroidered collar
>A doublet in glazed linen that's supposed to go with a loose leather jerkin and a red cape, and red breeches slashed green.

For Tahenohan:
>A glazed linen doublet but it's whiter and goes with a black wheel skirt and petticoat of the same colour.
>A long-sleeved dress with a low-cut cleavage and lace cuffs and a small ruff, the colour between red and dark blue, and a simple embroidered skirt.
>A simple yet well-sewn blue chemise decorated with bird patterns and lace cuffs that goes with a pair of thighs of the same colour and a darker pareo to be worn on top.

tahenohan
>A long-sleeved dress with a low-cut cleavage and lace cuffs and a small ruff, the colour between red and dark blue, and a simple embroidered skirt.

I don't know what any of the other clothes are.

So far, Lillith is definitely going to take the red tunic with the double-breasted coat and Tahenohan is definitely taking the long-sleeved dress with the low-cut cleavage.

As for second choice, Lillith is tied between:
>A blue painted doublet with slashed yellow sleeves and breeches in the same fashion and an embroidered collar
and
>A white shirt with dark blue trousers and a long tailed coat.

While Tahenohan is tied between
>A simple yet well-sewn blue chemise decorated with bird patterns and lace cuffs that goes with a pair of thighs of the same colour and a darker pareo to be worn on top.
and
>A glazed linen doublet but it's whiter and goes with a black wheel skirt and petticoat of the same colour.

It'd be nice to have a tiebreaker on those two. At worst, I'll pick one at random

>>
Your choice in clothing done, you feel satisfied enough to take on the whole world. You also appreciate Tahenohan's choice in clothing and kind of want to see her coming out wearing at least one of them already. Not that her previous barbaric set wasn't good enough but the fashion you're more familiar with fits her quite well.

Of course, as she was changing and everything, you realize she still doesn't have any underwear.

Your clothes fit fine as well, though they're all a bit tight on the chest and you really hope they're going to re-fit them properly for your tail, because it's really uncomfortable to not be able to put it anywhere. Damn humans for not designing their trousers for tailed people.

You have to change to your previous ones since the new pair still needs to get their trousers fit properly; you feel a little sorry getting back in your outfit, that feels even older and more worn right now.

You open the door and find yourself back in the upper floor landing. The woman, who was sitting on top of the stairs, turns around and looks up at you, then stands and gently takes the basket from your hands, "Are you satisfied?", she tentatively asks.

"Yes", you reply. But before you tell her which ones you chose there's one more thing you need to do...

>"Do you have some underwear, too?"

"Do you also have some spare underwear?", you ask the woman, who just blinks for a moment, as if not sure what to expect of you, or reading way too much into the question.

"I'll have to go check. I- I think we do. Shall we go downstairs in the meantime? You can talk to my grandma for the payment".

As much as it pains you, you'll have to shell out some more silver. You can pretty much give up on getting arms or iron rations at this point. Fortunately, you don't plan on needing either of the two.

You climb downstairs again while describing which sets of clothing you were interested in for yourself and for Tahenohan. The woman nods and assures you they'll be refitting the trousers to make space for your tail. Fortunately, even if they normally don't make trousers for tailed people, the latter are relatively common and most tailors know how to do that.

You go back to grandma, who seems to be quite interested in what you have to say about the clothes. You inform her that you've already made your choices, and then you drop the other questions.

"What would it cost to have clothes made for me? I might come back when I have more time, I'll definitely need more clothes", you explain.

"Mh. Depends on what you want, lady. Certainly something that won't be too tight for that useless bust you have", she points so close you were expecting her to just poke you, and she has that dirty smile missing some teeth that just doesn't help, "But we're cheap. Linen or cloth? Can do for one silver or little more. You start wanting embroideries, silk and better handwork? That's going to cost".

"Do you have underwear too?", you then ask, and the granny then looks at Tahenohan, then back at you with a huge, stupid grin.

"What? You wanted a wild, savage, barbarian girl and now you're scared because she's wild and savage out of bed too? EEEEHEHEHEHEHEHHEH!". She's laughing so hard, she's having lots of fun.

You decide you're not really that desperate for custom fit clothes right now. Also, you kind of are running out of money and you don't want to go back to the point you were at before. Well, you have spare clothes now, and adventuring equipment, but that doesn't mean you're comfortable going broke just because of that.

Tahenohan is given her new sets of clothing and you're told that by tomorrow morning they will have adjusted your trousers so you can go exploring without having to shove your tail inside there. You know from personal experience that it's amazingly uncomfortable and you'd rather just pull your trousers down a bit just to let your tail sway around freely than keep it confined that horribly.

Seriously, nobody should ever need to tuck their tail inside their pants. It just doesn't feel good, not one bit.

Your shopping run done, and with two silver and seven copper left, you're left once again with the choice of what to do with your time.

It's getting late in the afternoon. It's not dusk yet but you see the sun is slowly beginning to sink in the West. This day is coming to an end and tomorrow might be the start of a new adventure.

Literally.

>>
Since you're already so close, you just head back to the Golden Boar Inn and see if you can't meet your cartographer's friend. From what you understand, she's only going to be there for a short way of your whole trip, but it's still going to be important to get to know her. You wouldn't want to travel with a complete stranger, after all.

The familiar and warm inn is getting more crowded as the evening approaches on and more patrons start to return for dinner, talk, rest or whatever other reason.

You can find the way to the martin room yourself since this is your second time and knock politely. Expecting your return, Bryld is a little quicker at opening the door this time, you don't even hear the sounds of her hastily trying to make her table less of a mess.

From your height, her perky bunny ears are the first things you see; they flop a little at the top, as if she's a lot more relaxed this time around, and offers you a friendly smile as she sees you.

"Ah, Lillith was it? Good timing, my friend just came back", and she opens the door further, motioning for you to come in.

On the previously empty bed is sitting, cross-legged, a woman with the brightest blond hair you've ever seen, to the point it looks platinum-coated. Canine ears and a relatively long tail sprout from her otherwise human body, the latter shifting a bit but not quite wagging; she seems to be busy doing maintenance on something you've only now seen for the first time from this close: it's a rifle, one of those exotic black powder weapons that are still somewhat favoured in the North despite their alleged unreliability and all that problem with mechanisms going haywire for over a decade. For no discernible reason.

"Luna, this is Lillith, and Tahenohan. They're the explorers that will be accompanying me. And you, at least for a while", Bryld is still smiling, while Luna just stares at you silently.

"Hello", you start, she looks a bit cold but maybe that's just your impression. She's clearly a foreigner from somewhere pretty far, you've never seen someone that blond before, "I'm Lillith Taieart and this is my partner Tahenohan, we'll be going the same way for a while. Nice to meet you!".

She stares silently for a little more, and she seems to be preparing something, then nods, "Greetings, Lillith. I am Luna Eisenhart, I will be pleaze to share our journey".

As you guessed, she's a foreigner; her accent is very thick, though she seems fluent enough in Midgaardian. Bryld fortunately chooses to come to her aid to bridge the gap, "Luna is an architect, she came all the way from Yerles to answer the King's summons!".

It takes you a moment or two to remember what Yerles even is, then you remember. It's that kingdom far, far, FAR to the North, past Yuno; even that oddly-named land beyond Amatsu is closer than Yerles. All you know about that place is that it's cold, very mountainous and they did something that angered a god or something and made mechanisms, even simple ones, go haywire for a few years. You don't know how or to what extent, this happened decades before you were even born.

Knowing this, it's almost surprising she even speaks Midgaardian. You can't help but wonder what made her come all the way just to be here.

>"Pleasure is mine. What brings you all the way here".
>"Pleasure is mine. What is that thing you have on your bed?".

>>
An architect? You briefly consider what might be wrong in Yerles that an architect has to come all the way down through Yuno, cross the entirety of Prontera, get a ship from Izulde and reach the Shadow Marches just to find something to work on. Then you realize it was probably just her choice.

Still, lucky you.

"So you're an architect?", you don't have to make an effort to sound amazed. Sometimes you wish you had the chance to study properly and the money to attend a University, although you wonder just what you would had done in that case, "Do you have particular plans for this place?".

"I'm trying to put some order in ze towns and ze villages", her accent is definitely very thick, but you can understand what she's saying, "This town, Rebolkeu, is a mess. Space not properly optimized. You have plenty of ze land, but you must never assume it is infinite. Proper connektions between places eases travel. Eases flow. Iz very important".

She finishes the maintenance on her rifle, which has a smooth wooden stock and a metallic component other than the barrel that you don't understand but it must house important and delicate mechanisms.

"So, you're going to help build better villages?", you ask.

"Ya", she nods, "Best chance here. Best chance to work when everything iz fresh. There needs to be a vizion, and that vizion must be followed. Must be set earliest possible".

She seems to know what she wants.

>>35351302
Nah, there'd be a lot more monster rape, or at least interaction, if that was the case. It's a stupid story somebody made up and somehow it keeps turning up every now and then, but it's just blatantly false.

It must be some other reason.
>>
>>35351323
Ya, I remember you putting that as a rumor but there's nothing else really to go on. Maybe they just like saltiness because they're form the sea
>>
>>35351361
Well, you know that mermaids are an all-female race, so they need men from other species (almost always humans) to reproduce.

And this reminds you that you know pretty much nothing of mermaid sex.

>"Could you help me out with a project? I want to build a mermaid pier in Reboldeux".

Lieing is bad, mmkay?
>>
>>35351437
It's not lying, it's gauging interest before telling her that we're trying to help sailors get blowjobs and not be shot in the face on principle.
>>
>>35351471
We're not helping sailors get blowjobs. We're helping mermaids GIVE blowjobs. There's a big difference, anon.
>>
"This is such a good coincidence!", you smile and can't help but waggle your own tail a little. Ishtar be praised, she must be sending you help through whatever divine means she has, you've been way too lucky lately for this to be just coincidence, "I actually needed some help with a project".

Luna looks quite nonplussed at your statement, and just stares at you, waiting for you to continue. You begin to wonder if she's the silent type because that's her personality or she's just uncomfortable speaking too much in Midgaardian.

"I had something in mind to build an extension to Reboldeux's docks", you begin to explain, trying to make it sound both clear and convincing, even if you're not sure how to speak technicalities to an architect, "Something on sea-level, or a little below, to allow for both walking and swimming, or easy to reach canals reaching closer to the inhabited parts".

And there Luna frowns, her tail shifting a bit, "... And what good would zat do?".

"Reboldeux is close to a very large colony of mermaids", you explain... Diplomatically, "I think that for the benefit of both parts there should be some way to make land walkers and swimmers meet more comfortably. I don't think they have proper diplomatic relationships and all. There may be a mermaid queen that the Duke can't even meet, that needs fixing".

She doesn't look too convinced, but you see that while she stares straight at you, she's thinking about it a bit.

"I can't do it right now", she then explains, as if that needed to be stated, "But when I will be settled and started to plan on ze village basiks, when I will have some free time, I will see. I still need you or someone to take ze measurements for me".

"That can be arranged", well, of course she isn't going to abandon the reason she came here for just to help a complete stranger for a strange project.

>>Check and compare inventories and supplies
That's fair enough, she has her own projects to work with. At least having someone able to do the job will give us ammunition for presenting the project to whoever it is we're presenting it to.
>>
>>35351548
>Check and compare inventories and supplies
Well, we have a mermaid-lead!
>>
You decide to take a moment to compare inventories and check if you have everything.

You see that Luna does have a tent she's going to be sharing with Bryld... Until the former will be travelling with you, that is, then you just have a hope the three of you in your brand new tent won't be sleeping too tight. Every one of you has a bedroll and proper clothes for travelling. You also all have knives because seriously they are just too useful to have when travelling and only an idiot would leave home without one: how else are you going to cut bread and other food?

Luna and Bryld both have a rucksack each, all full to the brim, and Luna also has a compass and the aforementioned rifle. Bryld doesn't carry weapons and her rucksack is full to the brim with drawing equipment, parchments, ink and a lantern with plenty of spare oil. Fortunately she also has a copper pot for cooking, although your iron one is superior. Hers is larger, though, so you might want to favour it somewhat for the first leg of your journey.

All in all it seems you're pretty well set. You can't think of anything you might be missing at the moment. Tahenohan even has her block of chalk... Whatever she needs it for.

While you're there, you look at Tahenohan's bag and see that there's plenty of junk. Trinkets, amulets, talismans, not very precious stones, some sparse coins from different and very distant lands and a set of four six-faced dice made out of animal bone.

You hope you're not forgetting anything important.

Enough time to get food and float the concept of the pier to someone: by the time we get back we should have more information from the Duke as to yea or nay.
>>
>>35351799
>Suggest to depart the day after tomorrow, because you still have some business to take care of

Mermaids need fixind.
>>
>>35351983
It's not going to get fixed that quickly, and time is money. We don't have a day to wait, and I don't think they want to wait longer than they have to either.
>>
>>35351799
>Suggest to depart later in the morning
>>
"We should leave in the late morning, tomorrow", you suggest, "That way we still have time to fully prepare and get everything in order, I want to make a second pass at the Duke's palace to check that all papers are right, you know how bureaucracy works". You actually were planning to do something else about the mermaid situation, but that's a good excuse. You might want to actually check that part, too.

Bryld doesn't seem to be against it, but Luna just shakes her head. "We cannot waste time", she claims, "We must reach the karavanschnecht before nightfall. Get a good night's sleep and then leave again".

You're pretty sure she's talking about the caravansery, Bryld mentioned it before, it's going to be your first stop, just outside Reboldeux's farmland. You should be able to reach it in a full day of travel on foot... But she has a point, if you leave late in the morning, you might get there late. And while it's not supposed to be too dangerous out there, travelling at night isn't the smartest of ideas.

Which means that if you want to meet a mermaid again before leaving you'll have to act either this very evening, before it starts to really turn into night, or tomorrow at the very rise of dawn, and even then you'd have to be quick.

Choices, choices, choices...

>Insist in leaving later
>Agree with leaving early in the morning
>Other?
>>

>>Agree with leaving early in the morning
We can deal with the mermaid issue this evening: send Tahe back to the inn to get some rest early, if we need to, so one of us will be awake enough in the morning
>>
>>35352176
>Insist in leaving later

Already promised to work on something.
>>
>>35352176
>Agree with leaving early in the morning

You really don't feel like you should make a bad impression with your partners, especially not by making demands so early, and to your sole benefit. After all, it's kind of your fault if you picked too much work to do and are struggling to make time for it. But hey, you still have before tonight to do something, and it's not like you could build an extra pier for the benefit of mermaids in a matter of days, it was a long term project to begin with.

Still, you have to tell the others to start organizing hot spots outside of the docks. You have to get at least that started before you leave.

"Okay, I see your point", you concede, "We'll leave early in the morning. Shall we meet right here after breakfast? This place is closer to the East gates".

"Why not meet for breakfast?", Bryld suggests, "So we can all eat together and be ready at the same time. Come here tomorrow morning, we'll tell the innkeeper to add something for you, and don't worry about money", she offers you a kind smile, "You'll need that energy to lead us and help me explore".

You're going to need energy all right, especially to compensate the fact you don't really know what you're doing.

"Very well, that sounds good", you nod and look at Tahenohan, who just smiles in agreement, "We'll meet here tomorrow for breakfast, and then we'll leave eastwards. Caravansery first, then the closest village".

"I'll stop there", Luna reminds you, "Better start from ze closest".

"And I'll keep following you", Bryld also reminds you, "After we're done taking a tour, I can find somewhere quiet in the village to work on my maps while you count the population, would that work out well?".

"It would", you admit it's a very convenient arrangement.

With all said and done, you bid your two travelling companions farewell and leave the Golden Boar Inn. You will come there next morning for breakfast and then leave.

Which means you still have some time to attend to the mermaids' necessities.

And this marks the end of Episode 6!

Thank you again for running with me.

At this point it's quite clear that the only days I can run are mondays and fridays. The latter, however, is not a safe bet and I might not be able to run at that time every week. Heck, there might be weeks I won't be able to run at all.

Still, mondays are (usually) safe bets.

I'll be archiving this thread, and then stick around a bit for questions and stuff. Not much though, it's late and I'm a bit tired.
>>
>>35352627
Damn, time to finally make some money and praise momma ishtar
>>
>>35352627

So, this month will be bad for running? I will miss this quest during its abscence, specially nwo that we are finally getting to the meat of it.

I'll try my best but I'm not sure I'll be able to manage twice a week all the time. I might skip some sessions.

I do want to get to the meatier meat as much as you do though, rest assured.
>>
>>35352627

Would the custom clothes be ready for before the journey?
>>
>>35352902
No.

There's no industry in this world. Everything has to be hand-made. Of course, there's technology and mechanics and everything, so mobile character press and other handy inventions are a thing, but no fully automated industry, and even the partly automated one isn't a thing, mostly due to malfunctions and weird incidents.

This means that to get clothes, you must go to a tailor and have them made for you. This takes time. Or you can buy used clothes that are about your size and then refit them or have them refitted or something.

It still takes a lot of time, they absolutely cannot be made overnight.
>>
>>35352984

Hmm, how develop is technology, anyway? Press and pumbling are a thing, even heating. Apparently gunpowder as well, renaiscence level tech?

How does magic work in this setting and how prevalent is it?
>>
>>35353187
Renaissance level is a good gauge. It's probably a bit more fine-tuned, especially in the medical field, but then there's gods that are a thing so yeah. The only thing that changed from a real-world history perspective is that there's never been an industrial revolution and firearms never took the place of more "primitive" weapons and armour.

Magic is a complex topic.

Saying magic "works" can be interpreted as an overstatement by some. The exact workings you don't know because in-character you have no idea, but the general gist of it is that magic travels through the eight winds from the wind rose plus the ninth wind, the Ether wind, that comes from nowhere and blows nowhere, and yet passes through all things.

Living things too. That's why even those that aren't strictly magic users can eventually surpass the physical limits their bodies and real-world physics should impose on them. Such beings are very rare, however.

Proper magic users can actively manipulate the very winds of magic. What for? Every magic user is a different beast and the possibilities are nearly limitless. Tahenohan, for example, falls into one of the easier to understand categories by virtue of being a necromancer.

But seriously, magic is a mess in this world that not even those that use it know much about, and scholars argue all the time in a jargon only they understand.
>>
Well, I'll be going to bed now.

I'll see about adding an Ask.fm later this week. Stay tuned on twitter for news about that and next episode.

Thanks for running with me again.
