You recline into the way-too-large-for-your-tiny-butt chair you found lying around in an alley somewhere - your feet barely poking over the edge. It's an ugly wooden thing, probably made by some apprentice using scraps, but it's not like you'd be allowed a seat in a tavern - childlike as your appearance is. A cool breeze brushes through your blonde hair and against your face, carrying the smells of lunch from the surrounding homes of the city - barely a village the last time you'd been here. Like most places, it's named after it's local deity: Oemis, The Hawk.

You tip your head back, bringing a glass to your lips. Your favourite brand of spiced Mulsum - a honeyed wine that smells of fresh cinnamon. A sweet warmth settles in your stomach and you grab your bottle for more.

Someone snatches it away before you can even begin to pour.

"Hey!" You whine, glaring up at a man from below the brim of your floppy, pointed hat - a novice craftsmen judging by his worn-but-not-quite-calloused hands. Probably the fool who made this disfigured mess of chair.

"Ain't you a bit too young to be drinking, little lass?"

You smirk at him - the bitter mirth of a person who's heard that one too many times. "Oh? Too young am I?" You remark, twirling your hair in your hands. "Is that what you think? Too -young?-"

You lurch out of the rickety chair - hand swiping at the stolen bottle. "I'M THREE HUNDRED YEARS YOUR SENIOR, -BOY-! NOW HAND ME MY DRINK!"

He lifts it above his head, trying not to laugh as you jump up on your tiptoes to reach it; he's almost 2 feet taller than you.

"Sure you ain't a bit too drunk there?" He asks.

"That's besides the point!" You wag your finger at him as if scolding a student, swaying. "Drunk as I am I'm still, in fact, a genuine immortal Magus!"

"Pssh, yeah right. And I'm the son of Oemis." He takes a swig of the bottle and spits out the drink immediately. "Damn, this stuff's more honey than booze! Guess that's a kid's drink for ya..."

You pout, grabbing your staff from against the wall - polished bone. You picture the beast it came from - scales glinting off flames, squalls exploding out from leather wings, gnarled claws that crack the earth. You focus on its jaws and mix it with your power: a silent night, the glow of stars and spectres; Asra's divine mischief.

You push the essence into your hat and the eyeless thing grins - a wide, fanged crack that stretches it's seams. It's tongue lolls out and smacks across the man's face, leaving a trail of black slobber. He shrieks like a girl, scrambling down the street.

"KEHAHAHAHAHAHA" you cackle, clutching your sides. Your hat flops over your eyes - it's tongue flickering in laughter along with you. A group of pedestrians gawk.

"Haaaaah~" You sigh, pushing your hat up as it returns to normal. You reach for your glass, bringing it to your mouth. "Good fun."

You pause as you realize it's still empty. That man ran off with your bottle!

"Oh dear," you remark, squinting into the empty glass with a frown. "It appears I'm out of wine."

"..."

"Oh well!" You throw your hands up with a shrug; the glass flies out of your palm and shatters somewhere behind you. "Probably for the best anyway!" You still had a child's body after all; it didn't take much to get drunk. You stagger down the street - your cloak swishing with the motion - and into an empty alley, contemplating what else to do for the day.

SMACK!

A girl your size collides with you. Long, chestnut hair fans out as she falls over - her orange-brown eyes widening in shock. She hits the ground and winces, clutching at her white dress - it's cloth far too expensive for this part of town.

"She's over here!" Someone yells, and you see a large group of men approach - armed to the teeth and far too foul-looking for city guards.

Well! Doesn't take a sober girl to know what's going on here!

"Good afternoon, boys!" You cheer, waving your hand with a flourish and smile. You wobble right up to the men, making sure to keep the girl in your sight. "You're just who I'm looking for!"

They stop and stare. One of them almost drops his spear.

"You see~" you begin, placing your finger on your lips with a teasing pout. "It's absolutely terrible! This man - the stupid brute - he just walked up and stole my drink away! Now I'm all here alone, lost and drinkless!" You place you hands on your hips, nodding to yourself. "Truly a tragedy!"

You clap your hands together. "But then you fellows came along! Oh please, please will you help find my way home?" You curl your fingers together into a praying gesture - your dark blue eyes staring up at the group like a puppy's.

The man in the front lowers his sword - perplexed. He turns to his comrades and they simply shrug. "Umm, sorry little miss, but we've got other business to take care of. Can't stop to help you with your, uhh, problem." He places his hand on your shoulder and pats it awkwardly - the men around him chuckling.

You smile - a sinister glee - and squeeze down on your staff. Leather wings, thundering gusts, a great roar - you grab the essence and dip it into your cloak, splitting it down the seam.

It cracks and snaps, flinging backwards with a sweep before swiping forward. The men fly backwards - crates shattering, windows snapping off the hinges - a great black wind howling like a ghoul. They smash into the ground at the end of the alley, groaning.

"What the hell was that!?" A gruff voice yells. A large bearded-man with an axe turns the corner - almost tripping over the stack of men. A smaller group follows up behind him.

"Hey, Ed! Randall! Who the hell did this to you?"

"That would be me right here, sir!" You proclaim, sweeping your staff out and pointing down at him - your twintails flicker around you. "Nila Waelind! Divine Magus of Asra: the night child! Protector of all lost children!"

You tip your hat in greeting as it twists and writhes - it's cloth stretching into a large claw. The brown-haired girl "eeps" as it plucks her off the ground and high into the air - your cloak flapping as it carries the two of you away. "I've questions for you but they'll have to wait for later!"

The group just stares as you soar away - a girl hanging out in front of you as if you were some sort of flying angler-fish - skipping to a far away building.

You land - a light thump on the wooden roof of some shop - and set the girl down gently. She stares up at you - mouth hanging open and eyes wide. You rest hands on your hips and make a slight "tut" like a doting mother.

"You aren't hurt anywhere, are you?" You ask, smoothing out her dress and combing your hands through her messed-up hair. "Sorry about all that, by the way. I know Asra's power can seem kind of scary, but she's only here to help. I'm Nila, as I said, what's your na-"

Soft arms wrap themselves around you; the smell of fresh-flowers tickling up against your nose. "That was so coool! We were flying in the air all over the place - Oh - and you beat up all those guys without even touching them and, and - I was so scared but then you just jumped in like 'woosh' and saved me outta nowhere!" She presses up against you - cheeks smooshing against cheeks - and you almost wince, freezing at the touch.

"I'm Amy! Well I'm Amala but you gotta call me Amy, okay? Thank you so much!"

You stutter under your breath - hands twitching out at your sides. Well, at least she isn't afraid of you.

Mulsum is a drink made from wine diluted with water and mixed with honey. Very low alcohol content. The particular brand Nila was drinking was even lower in alcohol and sweeter than usual.

>>
She knows how to respect her elders, at least! You'll forgive her this slight breach in etiquette.

"Well you're quite welcome, Amy!" You say, clapping your hand lightly against your back. "And of course it was cool! That was the power of the -coolest- Goddess ever, Lady Asra, after all!" You tilt your head back and laugh.

"Oh and a dragon," you remark, wriggling out of Amy's grap and showing off your staff. "I was the one who slayed this guy, too! The dumb lizard torched my gear on my way over here so I taught it a lesson!"

"Woah~" Amy's eyes shine - transfixed by the polished bone. "How did you-"

An echoing boom shatters the silence. The air grows heavy, vibrating with a low roar - the thunderous beat of wings dashing across the air like a sonic boom.

You stare up at the sky as it darkens - the wind from the great hawk's wings pushing the clouds together. A crackling, electric hiss snaps and twists from out of the clouds at high speeds - a serpents fangs striking at the bird. The bird smacks the snake away with it's talons - it's tail scraping and scorching the ground outside the city - and crows. Oemis's thunder - a screech that scrapes across the soul.

"Hmm," you muse just as the rain begins to pour. "Even after 200 years Oemis and Ocmos still bicker, I see."

You hear a low, muffled whimper and turn to Amy - her face tightened into a determined non-expression and her fists clutching bundles of her dress.

"Are you scared of thunderstorms?"

"N-no!" Amy breathes out in a panic. She unclenches her fists and turns away.

"It's just different from home," she mumbles. "It's caused by sister foxes playing chase in the clouds there."

You raise your eyebrow. "Yyja and Iyja? You're quite far from home then. What are you doing here?"

Amy sinks her head down.

You sigh, unclasping your cloak and throwing it around the girl's shoulders to protect her from the rain. "You don't have to tell me now. Let's get you off this roof and somewhere safe first."

You lower Amy and yourself down onto the rain-slicked streets - nearly abandoned now - and make your way to your "home away from home." You wouldn't exactly call the place seedy, or run-down, or anything like that; but other people probably would! Amy seems to be considering it right now.

You push open the old wooden double-doors of the two-story building but jump out of the way as a large man flies out of the open doorway - a large blast of wind following. You hear something ricochet off a wall inside the place and a tiny red-headed girl the size of your hand comes flying your direction as well, flapping her wings and kicking her legs frantically - the air rippling and warping oddly around her.

You stumble, trying to fling your cloak up to shield yourself before remembering you'd given it to Amy. The girl's stomach smacks into your nose and you fall over - too drunk to keep your balance this time. It's like you just got hit by a large rock.

"Hah!" You hear a high-pitched, sugary voice trying it's hardest to sound tough. "Told ya I can throw a mean punch! Now take back what ya said about fairies, ya nitwit!"

You groan, glaring up at the tiny girl - the large antenna on her short hair bobbing back-and-forth like a dog wagging it's tail. She has her chest puffed out, laughing. Amy darts her eyes back and forth.

"Huh?" The fairy turns to Amy - just noticing her. "What's a lil' squirt like you doing here? And who's that on the grou- Ah crap, it's Nila!"

"Tuu-li-kki" you seethe, pushing yourself off the ground. "How in Asra's name - after all this time - do you -not- know how to cast that spell properly!?"

Tuulikki sputters and fidgets - her face turning as red as her hair. "W-Well. How come you're still a little kid, huh!?" She plants her fists on her hips.

Your hat snarls as it opens it's maw - dark ichor dripping off it's fangs; a low, rumbling cackle from somewhere deep within.

"Aaaaaaugh- Okay, okay! I'm sorry!" Tuulikki yells, throwing her hands up in front of her - eyes pleading. "He just wouldn't stop makin' funna me and I just lost it, ya know? Kept callin' me names and sayin' I was too little! C'mon ya know how it is! I -know- you know how it is!"

You sigh - dropping the enchantment on your hat. You did. You really, really did.

"Fine..." You huff. "You're off the hook this time. But only because I'm in a good mood."

"Alright!" Tuulikki pumps her fist in the air - hair antennae snapping up like a twirled salute. "Today's turning out great! Got to beat up some scrub and meet up with an old friend - and she doesn't plan on torturin' me! I'd offer ya a drink but it already seems like ya had too many."

"Hey, Tuuli!" Amy steps up, beaming now that she knows the fairy's an acquaintance. "Nila's a Magus of Asra; did you know that?"

"Huh? Aaah, yeah, 'course I did. She helped me out when I was real tiny too." She pauses. "Well, I'm still tiny but when I was a kid, I mean! Well, I still look like a kid - fairy and all - but ya know what- Ahh whatever! Hey! Didja know Nila's also 315 years-old? She's a darn granny."

Amy's mouth shapes into an "O" as you glare at 'Tuuli.' "Coool!"

"Ahh, yea sure!" Tuulikki nods. "Whattya doin' in Oemis, by the way!"

"Just wandering around. You?"

"Same thing,. Adventurin,' fightan,' lookin' to find a God who doesn't have a Magus yet so I can hook them up and get a new spell. Too bad I wasn't around to do you're pact. That would'a been some serious power."

"Are there any private rooms left, Tuulikki?" You ask, grabbing hold of Amala's hand.

"Huh? Ah - well - no, but go ahead an' use mine. Not like I need that much space."

"Perfect, thanks. Let's get you into some dryer clothes alright, Amy?"

"Okay!" Amy chirps, taking your cloak off of her. "Thank you, Tuuli!" She curtsies and Tuulikki giggles.

"No problem!"

The room isn't much - a single bed with a chest and drawers for storage - but it's enough to get dressed in. You pull off your wet robe - the brim of your hat kept you somewhat dry but not entirely - and search through it's inner pockets, standing in just a white blouse and bloomers. Amy sits on the bed and watches you.

"Hey, Nila! I head fairies are really good at illusions. Is that what Tuuli did? The air was all weird."

"Hmm? No. That was a different kind of spell; it's hard to explain," you answer, grabbing for a small pebble. You place it on the ground and concentrate on the inscription within, tapping into the shared inscription of another object miles away. You pour in some of your power and the pebble seeps into a shadowy pool on the ground - a full-sized wardrobe coming up in it's place.

"That's teleportation!" Amy shouts. She turns to you. "Did I say that right?"

You smile and pat her on the head. "Yes, you did. Now go pick an outfit. Something you can move around in." You open the wardrobe and grab another robe.

"Okay!" She jumps off the bed and hums to herself as she rummages through your clothes. "Wow! You've got a lot of frilly dresses. And big hats!"

"Well, I like frilly dresses and big hats. Try to pick something more travel-worthy, though. If there's no one around here to pick you up I'll have to take you home myself."

Amy goes silent - her hands stopping. "...Right."

"Hmm?" You perk up. "You don't want to go home?" You rub your palm into your forehead. "Oh Asra, please tell me I didn't just drunkenly save a runaway from people trying to take her home. Again."

"Huh? No! They took me when I was playing with the village kids back home! I was running away but it was from those guys!" Amy crosses her arms. "I just don't wanna..." She mumbles.

"Never mind!" She pouts, tearing into the wardrobe again. "You wouldn't get it anyway. You haven't been a -real- kid in forever and you can go and do whatever you want!"

You wait for her to finish getting dressed - some earthy-colored outfit with a poncho and matching boots - preparing the most persuasive tool in your arsenal. The pout.

She turns around - words dying before she can speak them as she meets your gaze. You puff out your wine-flushed cheeks with a grumble, angrily flicking your fingers through the curls in your hair.

"What?"

You cross your arms, letting a low "hmph" out of your nostrils. You flick your head away, snuffing her. "I just saved you from kidnappers, you know! And I'm an immortal Magus of a goddess that partially represents every last bad part of childhood! If there's -anything- I understand it's a child's grievances with the rest of the world!"

"What does 'greefence' mean?"

You puff out your cheeks further.

"Mmmrrmm- Alright. Fine!" She throws her arms up. "My mom and dad are real mean, okay? They act like I'm stupid all the time and they're always ignoring me or saying I'm 'dissapointing,' whatever that means!"

She crosses her arms - face mirroring your own. "The dumb kidnappers probably wanted me because my dumb parents are the dumb Maguses of Yyja and Iyja - who aren't dumb by the way."

"I just don't want to go back..." she says - feet scuffling the wooden floor. "Mom will just say it's my fault or something and dad won't let me do anything anymore. I thought I'd get to go on adventures with you now that I'm away from home..."

Long-distance communication is a thing but it requires an object that both parties have put an in inscription in to act as a focal point - just like the shared inscription between the wardrobe and the pebble was the focal point for that teleportation.

Since Amy was kidnapped she obviously doesn't have something like that on her, but her kidnappers might.

>>35341203
Eh, too bad. Could use mundane means to let them know their child at least isn't with kidnappers anymore. I mean the bloody incarnation of babysitting is preferable to kidnappers, right? They'll totally respect that we're letting her stay with us for a while, right?

Right?
>>
>>35341284
We could send them a focal point for communication with the mundane message.
>>
>>35341284
Asra isn't a goddess that's exactly widely worshiped. She's got a holiday associated with her that's basically just Halloween with the numbers filed off, but no one but a kid with a bad lot in life really looks up to her.

It's not just Asra, either. None of the more "conceptual" deities are widely worshiped. Nature deities like Oemis and Ocmus - very physical things with very obvious power - are the most widely respected gods in the setting and their Maguses act as the nobles/ruling families of the setting.

Nila doesn't get much respect, especially from people like them.
>>
>>35341359
>Gods of time, love, life and health being less popular than god of storms
Is everyone in this setting retarded?
Also can you become magus to more than one god?
>>
>>35341304
This seems like a good idea. Engrave a paired set of somethings with magical symbols and send one to her parents by mail. Then adventures.
>>
>>35341439
I'd say time and life are things with pretty obvious power. Lost children not so much
>>
>>35341359
Well fuck them then, we're just trying to be nice here and they give us shit for it. I mean not yet, but they might and that counts too! We should keep their loli just for that.

Also you should stop responding to me and write more. Players don't die from waiting until after your next update!

>>35341443
That's just giving them the chance to march right in and take back their kid. I don't even want to tell them we have the girl anymore.
>>
>>35341439
>Is everyone in this setting retarded?
Maybe they're less interested in intervening in human affairs, so there's not much use worshiping them.
>>
>>35341439
It's not retarded at all. If it's right there and in your face, you respect them more. The god of time isn't going to bend the entire universe over just because you didn't send a christmas card but that fucker living down in the street who controls rain might ruin your crop. Better pay some respect there.
>>
>>35341439
>Is everyone in this setting retarded?
It's more like those gods are easier to communicate with than the conceptual deities - which are very removed from everything. It's not that people don't value the concepts, it's just they can't really "connect" with the god of the concept.

It's a common idea in African spiritualism, for instance. The big powerful guys are kind of incomprehensible so you stick to the smaller guys you can see and talk to.

Even Hoodoo, which is the Bible with African spiritualist logic applied to it, marginalizes emphasison God in favor of the saints in the book - or Conjurers, as the usually call them.

You sigh - a long drawn out breath of exasperation - and run your hands through your hair. "Do you realize how far away your home is?"

Amy shakes her head. "I was blindfolded or asleep most of the time."

"Well, it's very, very far," you explain. "If we go East we have several forests, some plains, and an ocean to cross to get there. West is equally as long of a journey - just more land and less water. Either way you'll be getting your adventure."

And when you meet their parents - and if they turn out to be anything like Amala says - you'll show them what Asra thinks of that kind of behavior.

Amy bows her head, clearly thinking about it. "Do I get to fly again?"

You chuckle. "Sure, we can fly as much you want. I'll even let you wear the cloak."

"Good! because your hat is really creepy."

"Hey, don't insult the hat!" you say, tipping your head a little closer. "It just might eat you~"

Amala smiles wide with laughter, grabbing your hand - her dimples scrunching up her large eyes. Your little sister Rhea's face flashes into your mind. Her short tuft of blonde hair, her clear blue eyes, her sun-tanned skin, everything - it's all different from Amy, but the smile is the exact same. You feel your heart skip - dizzy - as old memories wash over you.

Laughter as the two of you run barefoot down the streets with fruit cradled in your arms - the yells and curses of the vendor fading away behind you.

That teary smile of hers on her wedding day - the complicated expression on her husband's face as he crouched over to dance with you on Rhea's request. Rhea laughing the whole time.

Babysitting her son, Tylor - the 10 year-old boy already taller than you. He never stopped teasing you about in that boisterous laugh of his - annoyingly similar to your sister's.

Burying her in her grave - her husband next to her. Then their son next to him. Their granddaughter too.

Amy stares at you - a light tilt to her head.

You wonder what Amala will look like. As an adult. As a bride. As a mother.

As an old, shrivelled woman - unable to rise from bed. Your hand in hers - much larger than now: wrinkled, bony, shaking. That glazed, distant look in her eyes they all get just before they-

"Nila?"

You feel her hand in your palm - smooth, small, and not shaking at all. You take a deep breath, willing yourself into the present.

"Are you crying?"

"What? No! Of course not!" You wipe at your eyes anyway. "Now let go of my hand and let's go find Tuuli, okay?"

"Alright!" She skips out of the room; you follow behind her.

An adventure should be fine. It's not like she'll be bugging forever, after all.

And what's one more eventual goodbye atop of many?

The concept of time is linked with Asha - which is also linked with the cycle of life and death and is essentially the power source for all of reality.

It's literally a mindless energy source instinctively carrying out it's cycle.
