You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you were standing in the secluded, TOP SECRET portion of your hangar, where usually the Ghost Hawk and Comanche's classified components were stored and maintained. However, in this case, the techs that normally manned this area were conspicuously absent, with the only occupants being you, Kelsey, and Sokolov.

"All right, Pierce, tell me what you have." Kelsey sighed.

Currently, you had "captured" the White Butterfly, who was actually nothing more than a 12 year old girl who thought she was running combat simulations. For the past week, you and Janice had been questioning her. Well, less questioning, and more innocent small talk, as WB, or Laika, which was her real name, was extremely talkative.

"Apparently, she doesn't even realize we're the enemy." You sigh. "Just a new team that's been rotated in. Apparently it happens very commonly."

"And just what the hell is she doing?" Kelsey asks.

"Apparently, she's running very experimental tech for the Russians. For example, that implant on the back of her neck is an input for a direct man-machine interface, which makes up for the fact that she can't use strikers."

"What's the deal with her legs, anyways?" Kelsey raises an eyebrow.

"Apparently amputated at birth due to a birth defect." You shrug. "No legs for strikers, which is why they developed the neck thing."

"So if she was actually flying that plane, how could she not realize she's been shooting down real planes?" Kelsey asks.

"I believe I might have an answer to that." Sokolov steps forward. "I've been analyzing the components you've managed to salvage from the wreck of the craft. Upon inspection, it's strikingly similar to your COFFIN system, but taken much farther."

"How?"

"Well, you see, the COFFIN system is primarily a means to deliver combat data to a pilot much more efficiently." Sokolov explains. "But this new system not only feeds combat data, but also acts as a direct control system. In other words, Laika literally flies her plane with her mind. The cameras and radar are the equivalent of her eyes and ears. But, since the system is technological in nature, I've seen something that the engineers have added in."

Sokolov then shuffles over to a nearby work bench, where there's a roughed up camera hooked up to a monitor.

"Normally, when a camera is filming, it records what it actually sees, like how our eyes see. However, the visual data in Laika's Vampire was being modified and translated into computer generated graphics rather real time footage."

Sokolov flips on the screen and pans the camera around. Indeed, you see a crude, animated representation of the room you were in.

"That is both deviously clever and absolutely horrifying." You grimace.

"That is the general trend Soviet science tends to take." Sokolov sighs. "But aside from its shady applications, this technology is absolutely fascinating. It's not just cutting edge, it's light years ahead of anything I've ever seen!"

"Any idea who could have made this?" Kelsey asks.

"Only a person with far more in depth knowledge of magical engineering and theory than me." Sokolov sighs. "I would not be surprised if whoever invented this is in some secluded research base, or a gulag, depending on how far along development is."

"Can you replicated it?" Kelsey asks the typical question.

"Possibly." Sokolov frowns. "With the recovered components and data on Laika's implant, I might be able to reverse engineer this system."

"Get on it, then." Kelsey says. "Don't worry about cost. I'll make sure to pass this along the DoD and DARPA."

"As you wish, sir." Sokolov nods and quickly shuffles out of the room.

"And now to the meat of the matter." Kelsey sighs. "What are we going to do with this Laika girl?"

"Honestly? I guess she can stay with us for the time being. It's not like there's really anywhere else she can go." You say. "Plus, Janice seems to have taken a liking to her."

"You do realize, that if this is ever found out, we're all going to be in for a massive shitstorm?"

"Do you have any suggestions, sir?" You ask Kelsey.

"None that sit well with my conscience." Kelsey shakes his head. "We can't hand her over publicly or get the State Department involved. If the Japanese or Russians catch wind of it we'll have a scandal on our hands. We basically lied to the international community. Doesn't matter if we did it for humanitarian reasons. Our only conceivable option would be to hand her over to the CIA, but I'm pretty sure you know what that would entail."

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow.

"We probably can't get her to the coven, but we can have them write out a cover ID for her. Russian born techwitch who's been sent out here to assist Sokolov."

"Can that work?"

"The Navy already has a similar setup." Kelsey says. "That way, Laika can stay on base without attracting too much suspicion. Of course, it's not a perfect solution, but it's the one that will work best in her favor."

You salute as Kelsey makes his exit, and then take a deep sigh to relief when he's finally gone. It looks like you get to keep your job and rank another day. You briefly wonder what to do next. Take Janice aside and work out how to break the truth to Laika.
If she doesn't even think that this is a real war and she's been killing people, or that she needs to keep her mouth shut, she's going to inevitably talk and get found out.

You decide to head over to the base hospital where Laika was currently being held. While she had more or less fully recovered from the crash, you decided to keep her there to prevent her from wandering around. Thankfully, Janice was pretty much there 24/7 to keep an eye on her. You really believe she's taken a liking to the little Russian girl.

"WIlly!" Laika's face brightens when she sees you enter, her little leg stumps wiggling under her bed covers. "You're back!"

"I said I would be, wouldn't I?" You smile.

"So did you smooth things out with the Colonel?" Janice asks, sitting by Laika's bed.

"More or less." You say. "Um, can we talk privately for a bit?"

"Sure!" Janice nods and stands up, patting Laika on the head. "Me and WIlly are going to talk for a bit, okay, Laika?"

"Sure thing, Janice!" Laika nods rapidly.

The two of you step out into the hall outside, and Janice leans against the wall and crosses her arms.

"Well?"

"We're going to dummy up some paperwork saying that Laiki is acting as Sokolov's lab assistant." You say. "What we need from your mom is just some simple ID documents identifying her as a Russian immigrant enrolled at the school and transferred out here to help out Sokolov."

"That should be within her capability." Janice nods. "Also, Will, you haven't given me a straight answer on whether we should tell Laika the truth or not."

Damn, you were hoping that Janice wouldn't ask that question. You had been putting it off all this time, mostly because you had no idea what to do. Should you not tell her she had killed actual people and let her live in ignorance, or tell her the truth and risk completely breaking her psyche? It was a tough call.

"About that..."

If we tell her the truth, she needs to know that it wasnt really her fault. Proxy she was unaware of and all.

The thing is, kids are usually smarter than we give them credit for.

I bet that even if she doesn't know the whole truth, that she probably has an egging suspicion that something weird and different is going on compared to normal kids.

This should be double the case now, since she's in an English speaking environment, with virtually everybody talking to her in English or maybe a little Japanese.

"Let's get it over with, then." You sigh.

"All right." Janice nods solemnly.

The both of you walk back into Laika's room. Laika smile as you return diminishes somewhat, as if she senses the changed mood in the atmosphere.

"Laika, there's something we need to tell you." You say.

"I'm... I"m a murderer, aren't I?" She mumbles.

Both you and Janice look at each other, and then back at her.

"You knew?"

"I suspected." She sighed. "I don't know... there was something about the simulations that felt, REAL. Just like, little things, like how there was a bit of turbulence every time I shot down an enemy. Just a subtle rattle on my hull. At first I thought it was a just a neat little detail they added but..."

"And when did you really find out?" You ask.

"When you shot me down." Laika frowned. "I didn't remember what happened at first, and then I thought it was some sort of mechanical failure, but then I realized it was way to coincidental. I wasn't sure if what was happening was real, or some kind of loyalty test, so I played along."

"Oh, you poor thing!" Janice moved forward and bear hugged Laika. "I'm so sorry any of this happened!"

"W-why are you being so nice to me?!" Laika blinked, tears welling in her eyes. "I... I killed so many of your people, didn't I?"

"Is that wise? What if we're seen?" Janice asks.

"We'll just be sticking close to hangar. Plus, nobody knows what WB looks like anyways. If anybody asks, we stick what we agreed to with Kelsey." You say.

"...okay." Janice nods.

"Let's go for a ride, Laika!" You grin, picking her up and plopping her onto a wheelchair. "PREPARING FOR TAKEOFF."

"Wait, what?" Janice blinked.

"Wait, wha-AAAAAAHHHHHHH!" Laika wailed as you took off at full sprint making silly airplane noises.

Thankfully, nobody bothered you about Laika, you think at least partly because nobody wanted to involve themselves with a crazy PJ carting a legless girl across the tarmac at full sprint, making silly airplane whooshing noises while the girl had her arms outstretched and was laughing like mad.

You first decide to show her to Red and Tarin, who are just hanging around outside the hangar.

"Hey girls, look who's up and about!" You grin.

"Oh, hey there, Laika!" Red grinned as she kneeled down in front of the wheelchair. "It's great to see you're doing better!"

"U-um, thank you, Red." Laika nodded.

"Hi." Tarin says as she walks forward.

Both Tarin and Laika then engage in a staring contest, neither girl saying anything.

"Um, Laika, what are you doing?" You ask.

"If I break eye contact, she' s going to eat me." Laika says, her eyes still focused on Tarin.

You see Tarin subtly raise an eyebrow.

"What makes you think that?" You ask.

"W-well look at her!" Laika whines. "Doesn't she look scary?!"

"Janice, Red, back me up here." You say, taking position behind Laika.

"Oh dear." Janice shakes her head and sighs.

"Yes sir!" Red grins.

All three of you take position behind Rin and each of you make up the silliest, most nonsensical faces you can muster.

You can see Tarin raise her eyebrows before skulking off, obviously defeated, at least for now."

Laika finally blinks and looks around.

"It it safe? Is she gone?"

"I'm never gone." Tarin says, suddenly appearing behind Laika and whispering directly into her ear.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" Laika squeals as she nearly falls out of her wheelchair in fright, with Red catching her at the last second.

"Now that was just mean, Tarin." You sigh.

"Couldn't resist." Tarin shrugged. "I'm heading off to do a perimeter check."

Huh, guess Tarin really did have a sense of humor, after all, though you don't think Laika appreciated it very much.

You decide to let Laika meet the rest of your aircrew and cart her into the hangar.

"OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH!" Laika squeals as she literally takes off on her own on the wheelchair. She can move that thing damn fast, you realize. "Is this some kind of experimental Black Hawk variant?!?!"

"Sure is, kid." Hoskins chuckles as he taps the side of the Ghost Hawk. "Configured for full stealth operations."

"That's so coooooool!" Laika turns her head over to the Comanche. "AND IS THAT A STEALTH ATTACK HELICOPTER?!"

"Technically a recon helicopter." Bullseye laughs. "But don't let Ugly hear you say that."

"Who said something about recon!?" Ugly pokes his head out from the Comanche's cockpit. "Bullseye I'm gonna kick your teeth in!"

"Hey, it wasn't me this time!" Bullseye backs away.

"Ah, so it looks like Laika's out of the hospital." Rex steps out of the Ghost Hawk, with Ghost poking her head out from inside. "How are you doing, kid?"

"Ah, um fine." Laika says, a bit bewildered. "Do all of you know that I-"

"Yes, and we don't hold it against you. Let's just leave it at that." Rex cuts her off. "You don't have to do any of that stuff any more, if you don't want it."

"Ah... okay..." Laika nods.

"Ah, don't mind Rex here." Hoskins picks up Laika and plants her on his shoulder. "Rex ain't much for words, so he ain't too good at that them. How about I show you some of this baby's avionics?"

"Yay!" Laika cheers.

"Nice kid." Bullseye grins as Hoskins carries her off. "Hard to believe she's an enemy super ace."

"WAS an enemy super ace." You correct him.

"Yeah, that." Bullseye nods. "Anyways, we were just about to take the Ghost Hawk on a shakedown flight to test out the new engine. If you want, Laika can ride with us."

"Sure, sounds fun." You nod. "Hey Laika, do you wanna fly?"

"YEAH!" Laika cheers.

The Ghost Hawk is towed out to the tarmac as Bullseye makes the necessary preparations. Meanwhile, Hoskins and Rex make sure Laika is securely strapped in to the copilot's seat, which Snips decided to temporarily relinquish. It was just nonstop questions from her as she tries to deduce what each and every button and switch did, which Bullseye was happy to answer.

"I mean, ohmygod, you actually fly this with your HANDS? How do you people manage that?!" Laika says in awe.

"Well, pretty much everybody does it." Bullseye chuckles.

You sigh. Guess you couldn't have everything.

"Go take her up, Bullseye. Show her the scenic route."

"Got it, Boss." Bullsye nods as he powers up the engine.

You disembark the Ghost Hawk and jog over to where Kelsey is, well enough away from the Ghost Hawk so its rotors wouldn't drown out your voices.

"Problem, sir?" You ask.

"Thankfully, no." Kelsey shakes his head. "I just came back from that background check. Figured out who those people in the photo were."

"Her family? Can they be contacted?"

"Yes and no." Kelsey sighs. "Those two adults in the photo are Laika's father and mother: Sasha and Aleksis Kaidanovsky. Test pilots. They were both assigned to the Su-34 program. Both killed when an engine failed during takeoff. Couldn't recover and they hit the ground nose first. Laika has been in state care ever since."

"For what it's worth, despite all my misgivings, I think you're doing the right thing, here." Kelsey says as he watches the Ghost Hawk take off. "Lord knows, I can't imagine what it'd be like losing your parents at that age."

"Nothing we can do about it now." You sigh.

"Too true. We're just left to pick up the pieces." Kelsey nods. "Sokolov is going to have a prototype of his "Brainwave Control System". He wants to know if Laika would be willing to help him test it. I'm lining up to have a special test plane provided. Normally, I wouldn't ask, but Laika's already got the experience and the equipment for it."

"Yeah, I'll ask her when she gets down."

"Let me know the answer then." Kelsey nods as he returns to his staff car. "It's a good thing your helo is back up and running. We're going to be heading out again, and soon."

As Kelsey leaves, you get the feeling that he was referring to something big. Not just a operation, but THE operation.

Hopefully you'll be ready for it.

Goddamit, Either Sokolov is going the Yuri route, or we're gonna see a stateside version of Yuriko Omega.
>>
Thanks for running, Merc. Gnite.
>>
>>35337437
Good run thar merc!
>>
>>35337470
That and control surface failures are what kill most test pilots

Those are the things that you test for, and unfortunately no computer can tell you how they perform in extended usage accurately.
>>
>>35337570
You know what would be worse? The Praesidium probably kept the crash from the public to avoid undermining the Su-34 program.

Unsung heroes, Laika's parents are.
>>
>>35337592
We should find a Su-34 cockpit/cabin from a intact wreck and use it as Laika's quarters
>>
>>35337634
Like turning the fuselage into a bed?

Sounds like a plan.
>>
>>35337634
.....That quite heartwrecking in many way.
>>
>>35337650
Don't need the fuselage, the cabin is surprisingly large, with a small galley, a toilet and room to stand or lie in the hallway to sleep.
>>
>>35337650
Just cut the cabin off the fuselage, more than enough room to make a decent sized bed in it when you take out the seats, plenty of room in those things, go check out some pics of them.

Aw man, sorry, kinda mixed up the Fullback with a Flanker, there.

Then again, I wonder how Laika's room looks like.
>>
>>35337437
>a special test plane
I'm wondering what plane this is going to be... A Morgan Nah. Probably not.
>>
>>35337634

is that a good idea though?

HERE IS BED OF THING YOUR PARENTS DIED IN. SLEEP TIGHT.

I dunno, man.
>>
>>35337713
Gotta wrack up dem feels tho
>>
>>35337713
Thank you for saying this. I tend to just ignore such comments anymore, sadly.
>>
>>35337712
Nah, it's definitely a Block-1 Falken
>>
>>35337713
IT IS RUSSIAN WAY OF MOURNING

LEETELEST DAUGHTER IS TOO YOUNGS FOR DA VODKA SO WE MUST USE ALTERNATIVES
>>
>>35337713
Need to clear out this tearduct anyway.
>>
>>35337713
>>35337719

On one hand, it would be a sort of reminder that Laika's parents will always be there.

On the other, there's that.

Decisions, decisions...
>>
>>35337732

I mean, depending on how much she takes to us and Janice, maybe we should get her something more our speed? part of a 'hawk fuselage? maybe just a mock-up?
>>
>>35337713
FINE THEN USE AN AARDVARK

We could even just use the survival capsule from the F-111 once its ejected, don't need to cut the cabin off the fuselage.
>>
>>35337745
Hind or Black Shark or Alligator?

I'm thinking a BS or Alligator, side by side seating means more room

>depending on how much she takes to us and Janice,

And one day Pierce walks in on Janice browsing adoption pamphlets
>>
>>35337768
>one day

But anon, we've already adopted her
>>
>>35337768
...and he sees Janice's Father buys all shotgun shells he can find...
>>
>>35337768
>>35337771
>>35337773
Hey now, we still need to find Laika a pet dog guys...
>>
>>35337782
Rex?
>>
>>35337768

Wonder how that would work? Technically she's a ward of the state, but it's a hostile state in wartime... does that make her a POW or do we just have protective custody cos the state is abusive?

can we even adopt her legally if the soviets don't want us to? cos they're not gonna want to let us. Not that it matters now, but post-war it might kinda be an issue.
>>
>>35337802

Acceptable.
>>
>>35337802
No, remember how last PJ thread there was some anon who suggested Laika could have a pet dog who was amputated after a combat injury and was being rehabbed stateside?
>>
>>35337802
What would Ghost think of that idea? Dunno what her thoughts on collars are...
>>
>>35337814
>can we even adopt her legally if the soviets don't want us to?
I don't think we're going to care what they think.

She's our daughteru now.
>>
>>35337832
Give her matching collar and she'll fine

>>35337830
That is OUR (Will and Janice) dog.
>>
>>35337850
Fine, I concur.

>>35337814
There's gotta be some sort of legal loophole there...
>>
>>35337814
Asylum? Not that 100% sure how all that works anymore.
>>
>>35337896
The problem with using that as a reason is that the Sovs could use diplomatic pressure to delay the process.
>>
>>35337922
Couldn't she be 'detain' until such process is completed? Maybe I failing of understanding such refugee laws but how can Sovs really stop it?
>>
>>35337833

You may have it right, too, we haven't really sorted what kind of clout witches have regarding that kind of thing, but I'm willing to bet she's not claimed by any of the soviet ones and even if she was, Janice's mom can bounce any kind of demands for us to return her.
>>
>>35337952

>>35337953 makes a valid point about this. Witch politics could spell a difference here.
>>
>>35337922
>>35337952
>>35337953
These are the same Soviets we are at WAR with right? What are they going to do, sue? With the augs she has and the treatment she's had I don't think a court in the world would rule she be sent back.
>>
>>35338039
I wonder the Hague court would consider this case...
>>
>>35338039
Post-war talk mostly. Technically she should be counted as a POW which would be returned to Sovs after the war.
>>
>>35338057
Since the United States does not recognize the Hague Court, their opinion means just as much as one of Stalin's farts.
>>
>>35338079
ANNNDDD there goes an option.
>>
>>35338076

don't they have the option to stay in some cases? I seem to remember hearing that somewhere.
>>
>>35338147
I'm sure they do. Which might the way to go about this.
>>
>>35338147
>>35338158
Seems viable.
Then again, loopholes...
>>
>>35338057
I don't care where the court is. I give whoever is in the stands about 5 mins of tearful testimony from the tiny adorable witch without legs how she was orphaned and used as guinea pig for an experimental superplane without her knowledge, and everyone in earshot will want to set the kid up in mansion.

For crying out loud, she's an 12 year old orphan with no legs. Weapons grade hnnnngg here gentlemen.
>>
>>35338147
Many did after hostilities ceased in WW2, many german POW's didn't want to return home and started new lives elsewhere
>>
>>35338174
I'd like to see how this course of action works out.
>>
>>35338174
>I don't care where the court is. And We're in a good position to do this with Janice already. Plus, if she likes us....
>>
>>35337814
We're basically creating a new identity for her via the LA coven anyway, so really we just need to get the right documents filed.
>>
>>35338281
I'm getting Witness Protection vibes here...
>>
>>35338293
Witch Protection, you mean.
>>
>>35338343
Yeah, that one.

Then again, I wonder if Drawfag already has a family/squadron image with Laika in it...
