For a moment, across the vast metal corridors and rooms of the Titan Fortress, an alarm echoes. A shrill, loud, metallic sound, designed to feel as urgent and troubling as possible to human ears.

Maybe that's why alarms usually sound a bit like the cry of an infant, you think to yourself as the horrible wail rouses you from your sleep.
You would usually wake up faster than this, and not feel this groggy, but yesterday night's party was particularly intense, and the aftereffects are... a bit of a nuisance, even for you.

As your mind races to keep up with events, the siren suddenly dies down, cut short in mid-scream. Your ears pick up the noise, outside, of boots stomping chaotically here and there, soldiers and crewmen and civilians responding to the emergency, whatever it is, or trying to find whoever had the genius idea of sounding the alarm at-

Your instincts, waking up just a moment later than you, tell you it's almost noon.

...Okay, it's not so early that you can legitimately be angry for being woken up at this hour. There's only to hope that this wasn't a prank or a mistake. There better be a real emergency somewhere. You've had people put to death for less.

You black out for a moment before realizing, with a jolt, that you were about to fall asleep again. You try and shake that off.

But the bed's warmth is still so inviting, and there are still several of your concubines lying on it, the red silk blankets twisted around them. You could start the day with a few more rounds of fun with them, just to raise your blood pressure a bit. You see them gently stirring and waking up as well, their sleep broken by the same sound that woke you up.

(cont.)
>>
You're sure this emergency is nothing the crew can't handle anyway. And besides, what could it be? You're thousands of miles away from the Border, and the Titan is on standby over the Amenia Archipelago, the epitome of boring even for the standards of the Western Ocean.

It was probably a prank or a mistake, yeah.

You can have whoever's responsible for this punished this afternoon anyway.

>Who are we?
That is a very good question.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

IIRC last we were with Maka, she was having flashbacks or remembering memories of a past life, which I'm guessing this is seeing as she suddenly had knowledge of what the Titan was and somehow knew its name.

Hmm, fair point. The concubines and the fact we're a Zenith do hint that so I guess technically we're Maka, or at least a past life of hers

The setting has Demesnes, that are magical locations where ambient magic manifests. Think of every magical lake, magical mountain, magical grove, magical valley, magical tree, etc in fantasy.

A Manse is what happens when you put a building there and make it geomantically aligned so it can channel that magic.

Manses can have neat features and are essentially magical batcaves.

They can also condense that power in a stone called a Hearthstone, that kind of works like Materia in Final Fantasy VII including the ability to go in weapon and armor slots. They grant some weird power or blessing and help recharge Essence faster.

Normally, you never go full first age.

But since we're actually IN the first age, do as the Solars did.

Yeah but her First Age incarnation isn't Maka. Them having the exact same failings seems boring to me, personally. I find the Usurpation works best when not completly justified by Solars being cunts.

It hadn't been yet half an hour by the time you made that post, actually.
>>
You rip yourself from the bed and stumble around the dark room. Your head feels terrible, and the sudden shift from horizontal to vertical almost makes you black out from low blood pressure.

The footsteps and voices outside have taken on an urgent, worried tone.

It takes you a bit of time to focus your mind enough to summon your suit of armor. You're not so sure the situation is so serious as to warrant you wearing it, but you're not sure you're in the condition to get dressed in some other clothes fast enough.

You have the armor on standby Elsewhere, and it takes you only a few thoughts to make it appear on you.

You walk out of your bedroom, through the living room and across the vast, luxurious complex that is your residence aboard the Titan, finally leaving it for the plaza of the command spire. Officers and soldiers are running each to their posts, even though the alarm has long stopped.

As you enter the scene, everyone stops and the plaza falls in complete silence.

Good. Finally some peace.

You scan their faces. You see nervousness, confusion, panic. They all stare at their feet, not daring to look up at you.

>"Carry on."
>"Give me a report. What's happening?"
>"At ease. Just.. find who pulled the alarm."

>>
"Give me a report. What's happening? What was the alarm for?"

Nervous silence.

"We... We don't know, Exalted." One of them finds the courage to speak up.

Most of them nod.

"It- it was triggered in the reactor chamber, but General Control shut it off almost immediately."

Oh, someone sounds like he knows what he's talking about. You look at him, a young officer in a signals uniform. A mortal, a fairly generic face.

There are way too many crewmen on the Titan to remember them all without memory-enhancing charms, and you never bothered with those. The crew rotates anyway. Besides, it's too much hassle.

"Was it automated? Caused by a power fluctuation or another malfunction?" You ask him.

He shivers as you start questioning him directly. Most others shuffle subtly away from him.

"N- no. It was manually activated."

It's hard to think straight. Your head is still hurting horribly.

Suddenly, the plaza spins, all the officers and soldiers and their concerned faces rotating wildly around you.

When you come back to, it takes you a moment to realize your knees have given in and you're lying on the ground.

"...Exalted mistress?" The officer takes one step forward. "...Are you unwell?"

"Step away from her." A harsh voice startles him.

Your vision is blurry, but as you rotate it - not without pain and effort - you see a group of colorful individuals entering the room. Movement, tension in the air, and the soldiers and officers around you make way for them.

You recognize that voice. Who was it again? You kind of remember it... one of the many dragon-blooded officers onboard. Even as you manage to slide her into focus, the name doesn't come to mind.

"...You." You hiss, trying to stand back up. "...Wh- what do you want?"

Something is seriously wrong here.

"We're getting rid of you." Is her reply, as an aura of fire erupts and surrounds her like a halo. Others step around, surrounding you.

Poison. Of course.

You have no idea what kind of poison this is. You thought you were immune to all of them.

You always learn something new.

Your muscles react slowly, your reflexes even worse. You stand up and activate, in a well-practiced sequence, your combat charms.

But you only manage to get barely started before they're on you. Whatever they did to you, they slowed your Essence flow. That's why it took you so long to summon your armor.

Good thing you did that, at least.

Physical + Dawn = 10 8 5 2 1 7 = 3 successes

You draw your Daiklave and lunge at the dragon-blooded, but your blade is knocked off-course by an arrow, well-aimed. You barely manage to keep it in your hand.

You collide with the DB, the hungry flames licking at your flesh as she slams her palm on your chin.

[1 damage]

As you fall again to the floor, you bang your head on the metal surface. Brief lights flash before your eyes.

"You... cowards..." You manage to mumble.

"We aren't here for a fair fight." Someone else replies as they all close in. "We're here to rid the world of you."

Those words, maybe because of your poison-addled, confused state, hurt you more than the dull pain from the blow.

Why?

You struggle back to your feet.

"...Who sent you? Why are you doing this?"

"Because you'e a monster." The Fire-aspect who struck you informs you with a flat voice. "Because you and your kind are leading the world to destruction. And because we can't stand you anymore.

"...Killing me seems a bit harsh." You grin, and your rebuttal is nearly cut short by a spear driven through your armor and skin, into your back.

[1 damage]

You twist, kick back, manage to not get pinned to the floor, and leap back up, trying to drive back the haze surrounding your head.

Physical + Dawn = 3 7 6 8 2 4 5 7 3 9 = 4 successes

You grab the spear, twist it out of your wound, hurl it in the general direction of your attacker. You hear a satisfying impact, but, right a moment afterwards, another DB shoulder-checks you back into the ground. You feel hands pinning you down, so hard the metal pavement begins to bend.

"This fortress was meant to defend Creation. You were meant to be its commander. Look at yourself now." One of them leans in, so close you can see him clearly past the haze. You catch a glimpse of blue eyes, bent by anger, full of tears.

"You spend your days in bed with those artificial monsters you call concubines, or just laze around fruitlessly. You have hardworking people flogged or executed for breach of protocol, or just disturbing you at the wrong time, which would be any time. Anyone who strikes your fancy, you just take him or her. You play with the hearts and minds of those around you."

"Of course it does." You reply, not really understanding what they're talking about.

Unfortunately for them, your charms are beginning to come through. Your head is still a mess, but you feel your nerves and muscles being infused with the familiar glow of essence.

You shrug the murderous crowd off from you and leap back up. "No way you worms came up with this sort of things. Who set you up for this?" Your mind tries to find something to lock on.

Most of the other Solars are at the Calibration Festival. Only those like you who are supposed to have important duties are stuck with their jobs, or at least pretending to do them. Or it could have been one of the other Solars on this Titan here? Killing you to take your place?

Those assholes. And to think you used to consider them your circle. You did great things together. You lead the Titan to the heart of the Time Eater and obliterated his seven hearts together, and you were together when the Born-Again King managed to break the Border and invaded the south-west with his birdmen army and his thunder-wielders. And after all that, this is how they act? You thought you were FRIENDS!

Of course, you also had your fights. It's been years since you spoke to any of them, and you're pretty sure they're still angry at you for that mass grave affair, but what were you supposed to do? They took it too personally.

But murdering you? That's a whole new level. They've gone insane.

Fortunately, you don't need to see.

You might not remember the names of people serving under you, but you remember the layout of the Titan like the back of your hand.

You sprint out of the plaza and into a side corridor.

The lifts will all be blocked and the stairs barricaded, probably. No sense to even try. This was planned.

The best way to get to the reactor at this point is from the outside. You head for the closest artillery post. Once there, you can climb down the hull and not have to fight your way through the Titan.

You run your way up to an emplacement, manned by three startled-looking soldiers. They probably got here after hearing the alarm, but they could be on to the plan. They stand up as you approach.

You don't have time, you can hear the dragon-blooded hot on your heels behind you.

>Just kill them
>Just ignore them

"The dragon-blooded are rebelling! Send out word to all that may hear it!" You scream at the gun crew.

"...Eh? What?" You see them fall down, their knees giving in.

They're too slow to keep up with what's happening anyway. You leap in the middle of their emplacement, rip the large essence cannon from its emplacement, and turn it to the corridor just as the first handful of DB appear. One even looses an arrow in your direction before realizing what is about to happen.

Mental + Dawn = 10 5 10 3 9 6 9 4 10 5 2 = 8 successes

You flip the switch and the field artillery piece releases a blast of compressed Essence, filling the corridor like water flash-flooding a cave. Walls and ceilings bend and break, flesh and bones melt from sheer pressure, and the weapon's recoil propels you out of the Titan.

In free-fall, you let go of the bulky weapon, instead clutching your trusty daiklave and stabbing it into the fortress' hull at the right moment to slow down your fall.

A shower of sparks follows your descent, but you finally stop right in front of another similar emplacement, this one almost a kilometer lower, on the same level as the reactor control chamber.

Empty. No, you correct yourself. There are three corpses here. Killed by sword blows.

Looks like things in the lower levels of the fortress have been a lot more messy. You wonder if your circlemates are here.

From how the DBs talked, it sounded like they were after all solars.

Kill all solars? That's idiotic. What's going on? The questions still hammers at your head, at least as much as the poison taking effect. You feel like your brain is melting...

"And why would you happen to be here?"

Okay, you DO remember that voice. How could you forget it? Your vizier and counselor. Eight Clouds. Chosen of Saturn.

You just need one glance at his face to realize, despite the murkiness of your vision: He KNOWS.

"Because if I wanted to take out all of the Exalted on this Titan, I would block all the Essence vents on the reactor and let it blow up." You reply, dashing past him.

You see for a moment a prayer strip fluttering through the air, surrounded by a pale purple glow.

Physical + Dawn = 1 10 9 7 3 3 7 3 3 2 4 2 6 = 5 successes

You lift your blade just in time: something terrifying hits you, with enough strength to snap your blade in half with a hideous noise.

It was like an invisible fist, carrying with it-

Suddenly you feel sick, even sicker. You feel your stomach turning and revolting and every organ inside your body desperately trying to leave it, only held in place by the flimsy barrier of your skin.

"What... the..."

As the shattered blade spirals past the artillery piece and out of the Titan, into the sea, you see Eight Clouds lifting a finger. There's a dark aura dancing around it.

"I'm sorry. But you Solars can't be allowed to survive any longer." He says. He sounds genuinely sorry.

"There's almost a million people in the Titan, about as many on the archipelago below. You can't do this." You reply, desperately looking for an opening.

"I don't want to either. But we need to get rid of you."

"Why? Just tell me the reason. I deserve to know as much."

He sighs. "Why aren't you talking with your Circlemates anymore?"

What is he getting at. "We had a fight. It happens. In any case, they were insufferable assholes. They've gotten worse with age."

"Last time you saw Karrel?"

"...ten years ago? Something like that. That drunk idiot punched me."

"And then you took the Titan on an unauthorized mission to blow up his summer Manse."

"It was a training exercise." You reply with a grin.

"There were people in there. Why do you care about the ones here, but not them?"

Before you can think of a reply, and let your guts settle back down, he continues: "Why isn't your husband with you?"

"We-" Ouch. That hurt. Why does that hurt so much? "...We decided it would be best if we took some tim-"

"You were tired of him. That's why you beat him."

"I love him!" You throw a slow punch, but you're losing your edge fast. He parries, puts your arm in a lock.

He could break it, but instead he just shoves you back and lets go. "Doesn't look like that. What about your friends over at Meru? Greenleaf, Ashen, Uruk, Emissary?"

"We... we had an argument..."

"You're losing it. All of you Solars are. You're losing your grip on reality. You're all losing your minds. You're going crazy. Your husband was right to leave you. You have no idea how hard it was for him to not come back."

"He... He loves me too."

"I'm sure he does. Everyone does. You make them. It was hard persuading people you had to go." He pauses. "Your powers are too great to be left to someone who's slowly going insane."

..... Sidereals have ways of bypassing things like 'rules'. They treat Reality like an Elder Scrolls game, and they're the ones with access to the console commands. If Eight Clouds wanted, he could have literally collected the EventID's (fates) of every hangover, flu, and plague in Creation and then attached them to us. It's a thing that is well within their power and purview to do. He may have just stabbed us with the metaphysical concept of 'inside out'.

>>
>>35300445

>>
>>35300422
Thats not how Sidereal shit works. The programming code of reality is what sorcery uses, at which Solars are better.
Not to mention our massive Integrity Charms would shut all Fate or Concept related fuckery down hard.
>>
>>35300445
It can totally be her, nothing says absolutely no Elder Solar took that bargain, and in fact, at least one Deathlord was definitly a Elder Solar.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d10)

>>35300464
Hardly. Personal issues are not a excuse for acting to destroy creation.
>>
>>35300450
Years of complacency and vacuity.

That would make a good exalted name, also.
>>
>>35300450
If this even is a poison. Again, with Sidereals, nothing is ever as it seems.

>>35300468
Sorcery is like, in the Creation=TES metaphor, having the 'Creation Kit' tools to make your own mods. It's the tool set the Primordials and Gods used to forge creation in the first place. Takes long, and can do things that completely break or rewrite the system. Manipulating Fate is just using the console commands to exploit what's already in the system and move stuff around on the fly.
>>
>>35300445
1-EF reserved the right to alter the setting both mechanically and fluffwise to make this the game he (or she) wants to run. Don't rely on canon as proof of anything.
2-I forget but didn't EF do something weird with essence levels? Like there are a few more intermediate ones instead of it being a ten step climb to the essence cap?
>>
>>35300531
No, Sorcery is literally the codes the Primordials wrote into Creation. What you are tlaking about would the purview of Wyld-shaping and shinmas.
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>35300551
I don't think we've heard anything about higher essence levels, well he mentioned something about having something planned, but we haven't gotten anything I think
>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

>>35300551
I think with how EF is doing essence it's more like your "Elder" status as a solar is dependent on your attributes and how many charms you know.

We haven't had a charm that we couldn't learn because our essence was too low, only when our attributes were.
>>
>>35300531
Fate is nothing like that, Fate is just the stuff thats written in the Loom, and the ones who control that are the Pattern Spiders, the Sidereal can only do Fate fuckery thanks to access to the Loom and nothing else.

>>
Rolled 1 (1d10)

Seriously, what's wrong with the dice?
>>
>>35300576
The Loom is the source code. That's what I'm saying. Access to the Fate charms is access to console commands to move stuff around. Sorcery is being able to edit the entire source code itself. I know it's not a perfect metaphor... [Note to self, invent new Sidereal charm: Perfect Metaphor], but the functional effects, from a programming standpoint, are similar enough to make it an easy way to understand how Sidereals work.

But we're getting off track.
>>
>>35300581
Do you know what I would probably not cite as proof of anything from a PC's backstory? A general statement from a cannon manual.
>>
>>35300616
Sidereals making sure the Usurpation goes off as planed.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d10)

Gentlemen, read the post at the top of the thread, off topic Exalted chat should go to the Exalted General threads
>>
>>35300581
She can be a Elder Solar, and even a Veteran of the War without being one of the very oldest.
Not to mention that that statement is extremly vague and downright incorrect since we know at least one Deathlord is that old.

>>35300620
Its not not perfect, its completly wrong. The Loom is a construction that oversses Fate and nothing else, its not the console commands of Creation that is what Sorcery is. Its simply not at all how Sidereal works, especially since the access to the Loom is only one of many things that Sidereals can do.
>>
>>35300620
>Note to self, invent new Sidereal charm: Perfect Metaphor

We'll die either way, but if we save the people the reactor would kill we would die as who we should have lived
>>

You remember.

You remember blowing up a town as petty vengeance for a petty slight.

You remember punching your best friend for making a bawdy comment about your husband, hardly the first or the worst he did, and ruining a friendship that had been keeping you sane for almost a century.

You vaguely remember the floggings and executions. Discipline, sure, but it bothers you that you can't remember names or faces. It's like remembering what you ate for breakfast two days ago.

Eggs and bacon, a cup of coffee and a fluffy croissant.

No one knows why your husband really left you. No one knows what happened when one of your sons tried to get between you during one of your fights.

You shake your hands, trying to get the long-gone blood off them. No one must see it. No one must know.

"...Is genocide the only option?"

"Mh?" He replies.

"...How can you be sure that it's the best-case scenario? How can you be sure that the world will really be better off without us?"

You stare at your hands. "How can you condemn us like this, without giving us a chance?"

You lift your eyes to meet his. Your eyesight is even hazier now. "We... I might need help. No one ever helped me."

"Because they don't want to. Because they're afraid. Because you never asked."

"You never asked either." You reply. "We... we might have talked about this. If you think we're crazy, why didn't you try to heal us? To tell us?"

"The risk was too big." He shrugs the problem off. "The chances were too small."

"...Our previous lives fought and defeated the creators of the universe, Eight Clouds. Were the chances worse than even that? Was the risk bigger than in the First War?"

You see him hesitate. He doesn't have an answer. Or maybe he doesn't like it.

"They weren't." A second voice greets you. You can only see a vague blue blur, but you have some vague memory of this person. One of Eight Clouds' colleagues.

"We're taking the easy way out. Amputating a broken arm takes less skill than setting a bone properly, right?" The man says. He sounds bitter.

"Stay out of this."

"I'm not here to interfere, as much as I want to." He replies. "We reached a decision. The fact that I voted against it doesn't mean that I will sabotage you. He turns to you. "I can't save you. But I can help. The reactor will detonate in three hundred seconds." He points at the corridor.

"...Will you tell him that... that I'm sorry?"

"No need to." He replies, stepping aside.

You hear the roar of an explosion and a large hole materializes in Eight Clouds' forehead, smashing layers upon layers of barriers, magical enchantments, essence-armor and martial defense masteries, and painting the wall behind him red.

You don't even need to look at the figure entering the corridor. You know who he is. And you don't need to look into his sunken, sad, bloodshot eyes to know.

"...I'm sorry. For everything."

He looks at you with those dark eyes, but he doesn't say a word at first.

"It wasn't me." You begin crying, as he lifts his gun, slowly, at you. "It really wasn't me."

The Sidereal turns around, walking down the corridor. To the reactor chamber. To reopen the essence vents, you hope.

It surprises you how much you suddenly care about the faceless, nameless multitudes that are a few seconds from death. For no fault of their own save being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If only you had another chance. Looking into a gun barrel from the wrong end really helps you put your entire life in perspective.

"...It... it wasn't me."

Maybe that's the right end after all.

Its just Solar Bond 5, which is not something Maka could influence. In fact, if that Zenith would have mindfucked her Lunar mate, he couldn't have murdered her now, so clearly she didn't.
We don't even know why he killed her anyway, Lunars are just as crazy as Solars afterall, and he came to this Titan apparently with the intention of murdering her without even being able to know about the Usurpation.
Maybe he was with the Golden Widow society.

>>35301476
>but we killed our son in front of him
We have a) only circumstantial reason to believe that, he could have done it just as easily since he died getting in afight between them, and b) it wouldn't have made any difference if she actually mindfucked him.
And was also not why and when he left her apparently.

Lytek, god of Exaltation, did a shit job of cleaning Maka's Exaltation so we were just influenced by it's passed holders experince of the Usurpation, the event where the Sidereal Bronze Faction, acting on a Prophesy, manipulated the Dragon-Blooded to kill every solar in existence and trap their exaltation in a Jade Prison they missed a few, which is how people in the modern day know about Solars.

Here's a fairly accurate if tongue in cheek sort of summary of the setting, but basically people in Exalted get super powers through magic doodads that attached themselves to people's souls. Sometimes memories of the person who had the doodad last get stuck and the new person get's them.

The background to Exalted is basically once upon of time there were these cool dude and they went crazy and some other dudes had to kill them, we just finished playing as one of the dudes that went crazy
>>
>>35301660
Ok, so here's the link to the thread archive: >>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

The last 2-3 threads have actually been a recap, so you might want to start there. Now, for all the specific questions about the setting I'd suggest trying to get your hands on the Exalted Core rule book. The fluff and mechanics are being reworked but it's a good place to start.

Of course, this quest is also being run for Exalted first timers, so really all the information that Maka (the MC) has access to has been covered in quest by now, meaning supplemental information isn't necessary.
>>
>>35301564
It did come to be in the second Age, although when exactly is a bit unclear. The "we need to eat them because mindrape" is pretty unlikely as the real reason though.
>>
>>35301742
It kind of is, since Maka doesn't know anything about the Usurpation or any of that.
>>
>>35301564
It's relatively new, but has likely been used at least a few times on one of the dozen Solars who escaped getting put in the cage. It's still heretical as fuck and would bring down the fury of the pact if its existence were revealed.
>>
>>35301660
This whole thread was a sort-of-flashback that our MC, Maka, experienced.

Maka is a Solar Exalted, a person that has been Chosen to be a champion of the highest of gods, the Unconquered Sun.

In the past, said Solars ruled the world, but they went crazy and other Chosen, in the end, destroyed them.

This is really the super short version. for more info, there are links at >>35298169
>>
>>35301778
That's not necessary at all anon, its not needed to play Maka, because she doesn't know about it.

That would be metagaming
>>
>>35301778
Maka just found out about the Usurpation. It was actually a pretty good way to reveal it since that info is pretty well hidden in the setting.
>>
>>35301660
>>35301709
>http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Exalted
This is actually a pretty good start, it gives you the summary without needing to know the exact details
>>
>>35301709
>and they went crazy and some other dudes had to kill them
To be completly truthful, the Solar going crazy is the rationalization the Sidereal came up with, its not the actual reason, even if it were a reasn.
The real reason is because the Sidereal were also going crazy. All Celestial Exalted got cursed by the primordials, and having shitty "best plans ever" is the Sidereals.

>>35301805
I don't think this flashback really revealed what all that shit was about.
>>
>>35301660
Ok, here's how it works. There are millions of gods, like in chinese or hindu mythology. Each has their own job to do. Most work invisibly on earth, making sure wind blows and grass grows and shit. Others handle metaphysical stuff. Life, death, souls, reincarnation.

Exaltations are fragments of immense power. the rules that the Primordials made when they made this universe say 'humans suck and cannot achieve any noticeable amount of power, which is hilarious because we also gave them free will to defy us if they want, and it's funny to watch them die.' Exaltations are what happens when one sympathetic Primordial used a loophole in that rule to graft those power-nuggets to the souls of humans, allowing them to kick ass.

Lytek is the god of Exaltations. When an Exalt dies, he takes those power nuggets and cleans them off, so that they don't carry any of their last host's memories on to their next. He fucks up a lot.

Maka is the current age's holder of that particular power nugget.

The Sidereals are Exalted empowered by the 7 goddesses of Fate. They like to pull strings and manipulate shit. the Bronze Faction saw a prophecy that said Solars (Exalted of the Sun God, king of heaven) would fuck up the world if they were allowed to run loose. So the Bronze Faction arranged for almost all of the Solars to be murdered, their empire destroyed, and replaced with the thousands of much-weaker-but-more-numerous Terrestrial Exalted (ones empowered by the 5 elemental dragons who make up the soul of Gaia, the primordial who allowed the others to use her body as the building blocks for the universe)

Prophecy: The Sidereals deal in Fate, Prophecy, and a lot of esoteric shit. With them, everything is about trying to make the universe run on a coherent schedule.
>>
>>35301810
> Sidereal Martial Arts are the pinnacle of kung-fu, and instead of emulating facets of Creation, they make Creation a facet of the Martial Art. This lets them punch people so hard they turn into ducks
>>
>>35301660
>Who
Lytek is the god of Exaltation, it's his job to scrub the Exaltation Shard of the memories of their previous owner's life so they don't influence their new host.
>What
The Exaltation ios what lets Maka do all the superhuman stuff she does, it's literally a piece of the Holy Power of one of the setting most powerful Gods, with Solar Exaltations like Maka's coming from The Unconquored Sun himself.
>Who
Sidereals are the Agents of Fate. They are divided into 2 main camps The Gold and Bronze factions, along with Independents. Also the Silver Faction, but no one takes them seriously
>Which
The Sidereals realized that the Solars were going nuts so, being agents of fate, they made a prophecy to figure out what was going to happen and what they should do.
It had three outcome
1 Do nothing and everyone dies
2 Kill all the Solars and weaken creation, but it survives. This is the Prophecy the Bronze faction follows.
3 Try to help the Solars and make everything better, but if you fail see 1. This is the Prophecy the Gold Faction Follows.
>What
The Jade Prison is the prison the Bronze Faction Sidereals made to keep the Solar Exaltations from seeking new hosts.
>>
>>35301852
Yes that is a thing
>>
>>35301657
Then what is reincarnation? Isn't that a thing in this setting? I could've sworn it was
>>
>>35301865
Tea cup assassins.
Fucking Sidereals.
>>
>>35301660

When the Sidereals arranged for the murder of all the Solars, they built a magical prison out of jade. Instead of going to Lytek for cleaning and reincarnation, all those energy nuggets were stolen and trapped in the prison. That's why the Solars vanished for over a thousand years. Something happened relatively recently that broke the Solar nuggets out, and now random people all over the world are being empowered with god-murdering super powers, random-ass memories of times that the predominant culture and religion of the world say never happened or were the work of demons, and NO IDEA WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

>>35301871
Reincarnation is a thing, normally when people die they pass into the lethe and their soul is wiped clean, sent back to Creation, and reborn as a clean slate.
>>
Rolled 10 (1d10)

>>35301881
They didn't just build the prison though. They also strong-armed Lytek with a west side story gang of sidereals up in heaven to ensure he didn't interfere.
>>
>>35301871
In Exalted peoples souls have usually two parts, one of those gets recycled in lethe and sent back in, that is reincarnation.
The Exaltation is a third part grafted to the soul, but it doesn't go through the Underworld. Its kind of similar to reincarnation, but it isn't the same thing.
>>
>>35301909
I thought they literally broke into his office, held a knife to his throat, busted open his magic cabinet, and STOLE the shards like a straight-up bank robbery.
>>
>>35301909
Poor Lytek, then again he could've told people that everyone was effected by the Great Curse including the Sidereals the dick
>>
>>35301930
Partially, they held him at knife-point and waited for the shards to float in and sacked them.
>>
>>35301930
Depends on your GM.
>>
>>35301848
There are five maidens, not seven.

There are seven incarnae, which includes the two above the maidens, The Unconquered Sun and Luna.

Solars are the chosen of the Sun and their powers are built around what being superhuman.

Lunars are the chosen of the Moon and their powers lie in changing their bodies to gain advantages.

Sidereals are fate ninjas and celestial bureaucrats.
>>
>>35301967
And then five elemental dragons, but fuck those guys
>>
>>35301963
Its spelled out in Compass of Celestial Direction: Yu-Shan. Its why everyone in heaven is mega pissed at the Sidereal and they had to literally break part of reality to escape culpability.

Its also why when the Solars returned the Sidereals send to "question" Lytek found themselves faced with bodyguards sent from pretty much every mover and shaker in Yu-Shan because they wouldn't have this shit twice.
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>35301930
I always figured the idea was that if Lytek got his hands on the shards they'd basically be untouchable by the Sidereals since his entire job is to handle the exaltations.

The only chance the sidereals had to capture the exaltations was to intercept them before he got them. So that's what they did.
>>
The reincarnation business is confusing to me, does Maka's soul keep the Exaltation when she dies and the soul gets reincarnated? Whats the relationship between the different parts of a persons soul during the reincarnation phase?
>>
>>35301993
Nope, they did hold him hostage in his office and caught them before they could go into the cabinett where the shards are stored in-between.

>>35302005
No. Once the exalted dies, his shard goes back into Yu-Shan into a cabinett in Lyteks office to be cleansed. One part of the soul gets cleansed in Lethe and send back, and one disappears, which is why its impossible to truly ressurect people in Exalted.
>>
>>35302005
Okay, so how it was explained is there are two parts to a human soul, only one of which gets reincarnated and recycled, and the other discarded. For Exalted, there is a third layer grafted on to the other two that is then welded off and scrubbed clean of memories. So for an Exalted, one part of their soul gets thrown away, one part gets recycled, and the third gets taken and cleaned and put into somebody else
>>
>>35302026
>No. Once the exalted dies, his shard goes back into Yu-Shan into a cabinett in Lyteks office to be cleansed. One part of the soul gets cleansed in Lethe and send back, and one disappears, which is why its impossible to truly ressurect people in Exalted.
So how does the Exaltation find its way to the soul, is it tied to the part of the soul that gets cleansed and sent back, or is it attached to a different soul each time?

It's kind of confusing how 'reincarnation' works alongside the Bond
>>
>>35301889
A few more things: The current setting's culture, ruled by the Terrestrials/Dragonblooded (whatever you want to call them) and overseen by the Sidereals working behind the scenes, preaches a religion called The Immaculate Way. It's accepted or at least known to most humans. It teaches that Terrestrial Exaltations are the only real Exaltations, everything else (Solar, Lunar, Sidereal) are actually demons claiming to be something they're not and that they should be reported and murdered as fast as possible. So when people who devoutly believe this suddenly become Solars, they and the people around them tend to panic.

There are other types of Exaltation, but most people don't know about them, and the few who know have most of their info wrong. Don't worry, you'll pick those up as you go.

A little vocabulary:
>Charm: Any of the magic powers used by gods, spirits, elementals, demons, Exalts, some very rare mortals and half-mortals, and occasionally a few of the stronger ghosts.
>Essence: The magic energy which powers the universe and can be used by anyone who knows Charms to do magic shit. Usually measured in units called 'motes''

That should clear up everything a newbie needs to know.
>>
>>35302005
She does not keep the Exaltation it returns to heaven to get cleaned up before finding a new host.

A normal human has a two-part soul, named Hun and Po, when someone dies the Hun soul get's sent off to be cleansed and reborn and the Po soul goes away forever
>>
>>35302005
Exaltation shard: Goes to Lytek's cabinet and he cleans it by hand, but often misses stuff that the next host could access later own as if it were their own memories.

Upper soul: If they die with nothing attaching them to the world, the soul goes to lethe and usually gets wiped clean. If not they become a ghost. Is the part of you that represents reason and higher thought processes.

Lower soul: Physical drives. Dissipates with proper funeral rites, otherwise rises as a hungry ghost at night.
>>
>>35302052
It's sent out to a different soul each time
>>
>>35302052
Its like this. Normally a person has two "souls" or soul parts. The Hun, the "higher soul which is you personality and what ghosts are, and the Po the animalistic part, which stays with your corpse.
When someone exalts, the Shard gets grafted to the soul as a third part. Equally bond to both. Once the person dies, and his soul gets "parted", the Po stays with the corpse, the Hun goes into the Underworld and the Shard goes into Yu-Shan.
>>
>>35302077
Lower souls can also be consumed for power by some Primordials.
>>
>>35302052
Most probably a different soul each time. The solar-lunar bond is a metaphysical link between the exaltation shards.
>>
>>35302005

Basically:

the Hun is the "real you". it has your feelings and memories and your personality. When you die, it can become a ghost or pass through Lethe and be reincarnated, but Lethe means reincarnations don't normally retain any memory of previous lives.

the Po is an animalistic, primal soul-energy. It's basically the energy of life. It has the instinctive responses, the needs and urges, the survival instincts, but it's barely intelligent. On death, the Hun and Po split up and usually go separate ways. The Po is the part that must be kept at bay or appeased by burying or burning the corpse and doing the proper rites.

Those two souls are the normal human souls. the Solar Exalted have the Exalted Shard on top of them.

It's kind of like a third soul that grants all the powers and blessings of being Exalted to the person. It also accumulates memories like the Hun. Upon death, the Shard flies to Lytek's Cabinet to have those memories manually scrubbed, but sometimes some memories are left, either because he missed them or because he chose to leave them for some reason.
>>
>>35302052
Nah, new soul everytime. The Hun, or higher part of the soul just moves on to a different life. It doesn't get it's Shard back

As for how Exaltation is determined, basically by being a badass. At least, usually
>>
>>35302110
Yeah, people sometimes leave that part out. Lytek sometimes chooses to leave you with memories; it's not always a fuck up on his part. How or why he does is only for Lytek to know
>>
>>35302110
>It's kind of like a third soul that grants all the powers and blessings of being Exalted to the person
Essentially it's grafting a bit that makes a human more like a god. The anima is how the shard protects the body from getting damaged by essence respiration beyond what humans could normally take.
>>
>>35302110

The Solar-Lunar bond is keyed to the Shard and nothing else, incidentally.

Of course Maka doesn't know the details of spiritodynamics so she doesn't know all of this stuff, but she was right when she said "that wasn't me": different Exaltations of the same shard are functionally different people.

Especially because the Shard is not something you're BORN with, but something that you acquire during your lifetime, so the Shard has no "control" on your birth or your life up to that point.

The fact that you get an injection of memories coming from other people can be confusing and can cause you to think you "were that person in a past life", but that's technically incorrect. Still, like I said, few people in the setting know otherwise, so it's a common assumption.
>>
>>35302026
Can't you just rip someone's Hun out and place a freshly deceased Hun that hasn't gone to Lethe in there and attach it to the Po?
>>
>>35302167
But its not the same persons Po anymore, and you would be just animating a corpse via posession, which is possible.
>>
>>35302117
>how Exaltation is determined

Solars: Do something awesome.

Lunars: Do something awesome, survive it.

Sidereals: Fate and Destiny.

Dragon Blooded: Have DB parents and get lucky.

Abyssals: Do something awesome, die trying.

Infernals: Try something doing awesome, fail.

Alchemals: Do something awesome over multiple lives.
>>
>>35301967
>>35301989
Also Gaia.
And sometimes Autochthon.
>>
>>35302181
No, I mean, can't you rip the Hun out of someone while they are still alive and shove a new Hun in like a transplant? I'm sure there's a way to do that that keeps the body and Po arrested long enough to graft a new Hun on there like an Exaltation shard
>>
>>35301852
Technically it lets them punch people so hard that now they were always a duck.
>>
>>35302223
The moment you rip someones Hun out of them, he very much dies. I'm fairly sure Void Circle necromancy could graft a Hun to a Po, but it wouldn't be the same person since the Po is still very much part of you, they aren't interchangeable.
>>
>>35302259
But the Hun part has all the higher function parts and memories anyway, the Po's just baser shit. Who cares about the Po
>>
>>35302277
Your Hun does. Without all that shit, you are just a ghost possessing a body.
>>
>>35302117
>>35302052
Each type of Exaltation chooses or is chosen differently.

Solars get Exalted by being badasses. The savage tribesman who sees his village being attacked by a hundred velociraptors and charges in to kill as many as he can with nothing but his own severed arm as a weapon? Yeah, he gets put on the list and if there's a Dawn Caste exaltation (each Exaltation group is broken into Castes based on their specialties, Dawns are the brawlers and ass-kickers of the Solars) available, he's got a shot at getting it.

Lunars get chosen for being survivors. Lost in the wilderness and survive for months without help? You're in.

Sidereals get chosen, manually. Since they're all about Fate and Destiny and doing Heaven's Paperwork, they usually just pick a kid when they're born, arrange for them to have a life that will mold them into the kind of person the Sid wants them to be, and then the Sid tags a sticky note onto his own soul that when he dies, the kid he ear-marked gets his shard. It's all about maintaining the Bureaucracy with them.

Abyssals are chosen by the Death Lords (ghosts powerful enough to be greater gods if they weren't stuck in the underworld) and the Neverborn (dead primordials), often from people who had a shot at being badass enough to become Solars but dodged their responsibility and lived or died with the shame of it.

Infernals, very rare, only 50 of them, are chosen by the Yozis (masters of hell, progenitors of all demons, they used to be Primordials who built Creation until the exalted kicked their asses in the First War, mutilated their souls into being something else, and locked them away). They're chosen based on how well the host can advance the Yozis' schemes of escape, or just be how much damage they can cause to Creation. The Yozis are the kind to look at Adolf Hitler or Ghengis Khan and say 'that's a good start, here, have all the powers of Superman and an insatiable hunger for human flesh and try again'.
>>
>>35302277
The po is the power source. It keeps everything else working. While the Hun gets reincarnated, the Po gets eaten for energy by whichever Primordial you happen to live inside (usually Gaia or Autocthon).
>>
>>35302354
>usually Gaia or Autocthon
Creation is not Gaia.
>>
>>35302386
He's basically calling Gaia a huge fatty. Luna would probably be pissed, but s/he's too busy being preggars to notice
>>
>>35302308
>The Yozis are the kind to look at Adolf Hitler or Ghengis Khan
Not as such. The main thing with Infernals is that they had a shot at greatness and then due to some personal failing fell short of their potential, so neither Temudchin nor Adolf would count, who both did rise to the challenge, which makes them more Solar material.
>>
>>35302277
Different people have different drives. No two Po are alike.
>>
>>35302417
But that's dumb, why would the Yozis pick fart knockers who failed at doing something great? Why not pick winners or competent people to get out of that shit hole of a prison?
>>
>>35302216
Gaia doesn't technically have Exalts. DBs are exalts of her "children", the greater elemental dragons. And she isn't an incarnate, her joutunn form hangs out with them while the rest of her is out exploring the Wyld.

Autobot's exalts are just kind of weird and not part of the main setting.
>>
>>35302474
Because the Infernals splatbook is bullshit, thats why.

The idea is, apparently, that these people have the potential for greatness, but fell short because of personal, failing, maybe they chickened out, and the Yozi use that to convince them what a shit place current Creation is and how it needs different management.
>>
>>35302490
Her 'children' are actually a part of her. Probably her lower souls that she leases out to use for Exaltation
>>
>>35302474
Because those 'losers' have the drive and ability to succeed. They just got unlucky. In theory.
>>
>>35302474
Because they have the potential to be amazing, but the personality flaws mean they're unlikely to rebel or betray. They're not as good as Solar candidates, but they're more controllable. That matters a lot to the yozis. Remember, they thought they had absolute mastery over everything, until they were betrayed. Controlling their creations is a big deal to them.
>>
>>35302223
as Twilight savants of the First Age demonstrated, you totally can do this. the result is, admittedly, screamingly insane and incapable of any actions beyond flailing disjointedly, but you can totally do it!

the First Age: when phenomenal cosmic power met phenomenal cosmic boredom and resulted in people tearing apart the fabric of Creation for shits and giggles.
>>
>>35302750
And it was still better than what came after the three subsequent apocalyptic events.
>>
>>35302474
Because the Yozis want champions who are like them.
Great. Powerful. Amazing. And COMPLETELY and unfairly screwed over by a universe that must be FIXED so something like that can never happen again.

It's one of the few legit cool things about the infernal splatbook's fluff. The Yozis need people who understand that a Creation where it is -possible- for bad things to happen to them is broken, and must be set right.

I.E. putting themselves back in charge of everything. This plan's kinda got more failure points than it has working parts, but it's important to recognize it was a plan come up with by the Not Only Embodiment, But Also Creator Of Deceit, Betrayal, And Flaw. Bug and feature are kinda one and the same thing as far as he's concerned.

Something to remember though is that EF isn't going to use canon Infernals, so for the purpose of this quest don't worry about them
>>
>>35302787
And still a pale shadow of what had gone before it, the time when the Creators of the Universe still stood over it as master.
It's one of the touches I like about Exalted: every time the weak rebel against their masters, it is WHOLLY fucking justified by what incredible fuckups their masters have become.

But the price for killing the power-mad tyrants who run Creation is you lose access to all the power that let them run(/create) Creation in the first place.

Heavy lies the crown, kids!

Also: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Canon Infernals, that doesn't he wouldn't use Infernals of his own interpretation

All too true.
Primordials: Existed in the Wyld, a place of raw chaos. Created Creation to get away from things/thoughts/natures which would devour them or force them to not be. Abused all their creations terribly. Were deposed.

Solars: Deposed (with extensive help) the Primordials. Abused the humans they ruled terribly. Were deposed.

Terrestrials: Deposed (with help) the Solars. Abuse humans terribly.
>>
>>35302855
Debatable. Pre-primordial war Creation was amazing if you were a primordial. For gods it was a constant scramble to fix things because Adrian rolled his world body over during a nap and rendered 52 species extinct, along with four cities and a major landmass.
For mortals, the first age was a time of peace, plenty, and long, healthy lives with golden kings who could protect them from any enemy and heal any disease.
>>
>>35303009
If you didn't mind randomly being experimented on, forced to work a job you loathe, have your mind re-written in any of a dozen amusing ways so that everything you once cherished now means nothing to you, have your family kidnapped for a four-decade orgy they might not survive, get murdered for accidentally sneezing while your Solar Lord was trying to take a nap, have your entire village become homeless nomads because some solar decided that your farmland was the perfect spot for a tanning booth and he didn't want to smell peasant while he tanned, or you watched a Solar rape an attractive young girl and his auto-social-defense charm forcibly re-aligns your mind to think that she must have deserved it because the Solar couldn't ever have done anything wrong.

First age was shit. Just because your tyrants dole out a few luxuries doesn't make them not-tyrants.
>>
>>35303107
All of these things affected a miniscule amount of people compared to the milions that lived in happyness and plenty. And it was not the norm in the first Age anyway, some Solar were like that, but by far not all, the Usurpation isn't a clear cut thing that needed to happen.

> or you watched a Solar rape an attractive young girl and his auto-social-defense charm forcibly re-aligns your mind to think that she must have deserved it because the Solar couldn't ever have done anything wrong.
Now thats just bullshit, no Solar would bother raping some random mortal girl when he could engineer a race of beautiful people to abuse, or just use his Gentes.

The thing is, the Solars didn't actuall yinteract with mortals on a personal basis, and in some cases that ended terribly, but overall life in the First Age was good, and a lot better than life without the Solars.
>>
>>35303107
>or you watched a Solar rape an attractive young girl and his auto-social-defense charm forcibly re-aligns your mind to think that she must have deserved it because the Solar couldn't ever have done anything wrong.
Or the social stuff just makes the girl fall head over heels for the demi-god and wants him to bear his children.
>>
>>35303107
Most of these examples are untrue because they require Solars to interact with mortals, which those that were actually that far gone simply didn't. They didn't kidnap or rape mortals, why the fuck would they ? They engineered entire races and automatons for that purpose, the ones who really took the brunt of Solar abuse were the Dragon-blooded.
The mortals were perfectly fine.
>>
>>35303162
>> or you watched a Solar rape an attractive young girl and his auto-social-defense charm forcibly re-aligns your mind to think that she must have deserved it because the Solar couldn't ever have done anything wrong.
>Now thats just bullshit, no Solar would bother raping some random mortal girl when he could engineer a race of beautiful people to abuse, or just use his Gentes.
There is actually a named Solar who did shit like that. He invented the reflexive-mindfuck charm that automatically rewrites everyone's perceptions so that it looks like whatever he did was perfectly just.
>>
>>35303009
Oh, I'm sorry: you were describing the first age as idyllic.

As a result I thought we must have been talking about how awesome things were from the perspective of the people in charge, and all their marvelous works of art and war!

Yes, the Sidereals and Dragon-Blooded are less capable of defending creation than the Solars were. And that's a definite mark against them.

But neither are they capable of unmaking vast swathes of Creation, massacring nations overnight, mindraping cities with a word, or torturing vast numbers of men and gods both to death because they're bored.

The Dragon-Blooded Realm, for all its millions of flaws, is effortlessly superior to the Solar Deliberative on the strength of a single point: it is possible to resist the tyranny of the Realm.

The solars did not permit such things.
>>
>>35303208
He raped Dragon-blooded under his command though. Not random mortals.
>>
>>35303218
>The solars did not permit such things.
Thats obviously wrong because the Usurpation happened.
>>
>>35303223
Dragonblooded AND THEIR FAMILIES, who are mortals-with-potential-to-exalt. Still mortals.
>>
>>35303218
I don't buy into "its better to accept a diminished world than to deal with the consequences of a better one" that sounbds like defeatism to me.

>>35303244
>AND THEIR FAMILIES
Nope. If we are thinking of the same guy, no, he was comanding a First Age fleet, the Dargon-blooded mortal families weren't there.
>>
>>35303241
Because they were betrayed by their should-have-been-equals-but-were-treated-like-bitches. Sidereals consipred against them in ways and places Solars couldn't monitor, the way Gaia and Autocthon conspired against the other Primordials. It wasn't 'lessers rising against their masters', it was 'Lessers GUIDED BY THEIR MASTER'S COLLEAGUES rising against their masters.'
>>
>>35303162
The Prophecy of Gold takes issue with that statement.

Three hundred golden swords, and a hundred arms to hold them aloft. Be strong, o arms! For should you slip but once a sword will fall- and all creation with it.

The Gold Faction believed they could have gone forever without making a mistake.

The Bronze Faction looked at the ruins left in the wake of Solar rampages and, rightfully, responded "Pull the other one, dipshit."
>>
>>35303263
Me either. I don't want to accept that Creation has to keep backpeddaling because bad people were in charge. Thatsecond prophecy the Siddies had shows that there was a chance to make things right, but were afraid of the consequence failure

Well now Creation is on the brink, with many vying to wipe the slate clean, fundamentally change it or remove it outright. That shouldn't be Option B
>>
>>35303223
>>35303263
Two different guys, the "auto-social charms" guy thinks of Desus. Who is never mentioned with anything about random raping of mortals.
And besides that
>Desus was a sociopathic dick, News at eleven

>>35303306
>The Prophecy of Gold takes issue with that statement.
Quite the opposite, the Prophecy of Gold proves it wasn't that bad yet, since it makes clear that if carefully managed the Solars could stay grat Heroes, which means not the majority of them had fallen yet and the possibility existed they might never actually fall. If the Solars were already all sociopathic tyrants on steroids, the Prophecy of Gold couldn't exist.
>>
>>35303306
The problem is that it was a Sidereal Prophecy, and like all things Sid, it is inherently flawed by the fact that they never account for their own actions. It also never accounts for anything outside of Fate, like the underworld and malfeas. Sidereal prophecy is not, and (since the breaking of the Mask) CANNOT be accurate or reliable in any way. It just doesn't work. It's part of the Sidereal Curse.
>>
>>35303289
Which proves that the Solars could be defied. So saying the Solars didn't allow resistance is simply wrong. They could have been policed, the Sidereals were there to do just that, they just fucked up on their job.
>>
>>35303208
Desus?

He mostly used that for when he limit breaked and beat/killed someone.
>>
>>35303263
What isn't better about a world where entire nations aren't held hostage to the whims of a mad demigod?

It is not difficult to see what the First Age would have become, given time. It's only ever a week's walk on silver sands away.

Witness the impossible glory of the Demon City, where civilization erupts in anarchic profusion from every tower and tunnel. Listen to the wondrous music, feast upon its delicacies, and drink deep of the knowledge its savants have long guarded. Dance beneath the scornful gaze of Ligier, and revel in the shadows of Erembour, and know that it is all the sweeter for the knowledge you are only ever a whim of the numberless Unquestionable away from a sudden and brutal death.

The Yozis have evidence- though they deny it strenuously- that their plan will never work. Creation has never looked more like Malfeas than it did in the High First Age.
>>
>>35303420
Well, it's what it was originally designed for. One of the few bits of subtlety in Dreams of the First Age is that given enough time, it worked on him too.

Couple millenia without any negative reinforcement do interesting things to a human mind.
>>
>>35303402
Well, yeah. Aside from things like the Orb and Scepter (Paragon) and a few exotic things like that magic spell that automatically lets you know when someone in Creation says your name and what they're talking about, you could resist the Solars just fine and get squashed for it, unless a Social-Solar was actively talking in your vicinity.
>>
>>35303396
For all we know the second prophecy would have made Sidereals god kings instead with Solars as servants. Quite frankly fuck prophecy, the First Age Solar had it right

"Shit you could havr said we needed help in a lucid moment!"
>>
>>35303456
Except Malfeas isn't what the Yozi can accomplish when unleashed, its their prison, its less than what they might be, and pales compared to what the Solars can do.

And a world in which these nations are held in the vice grip of disease, povert, hunger, catastrophies, wyld invasions and so forth, isn't any better.

>>35303494
And yet, despite all these things, the Solar got defied and defeated.
>>
>>35303511
It's why I'm eager to run a Lunar Savant in an upcoming game, a master of nearly-forgotten magics and magitech. Her plan is to destroy the loom itself, so that nobody ever has any destiny at all and all of Creation has to 'fly by the seat of its pants'.
>>
>>35303306
A huge, very important part to keep in mind is that they both were wrong and what the sids did was ultimately worse and the cause of things they were trying to prevent in the first place.
>>
>>35303524
>And a world in which these nations are held in the vice grip of disease, povert, hunger, catastrophies, wyld invasions and so forth, isn't any better.
I side with the Lunars on this: Fuck the Exalts. What creation NEEDS is mortals with enough power to do the work of Exalts, so the Exalts can retire completely and not be in charge.
>>
>>35303511
How do you tell a lucid moment from a mad one?

That's the terrifying thing about Limit, you see. The margin between a wholly sane Solar and one who is utterly lost to madness is as little as a single question they don't like the tone of- and in the High First Age, surviving that question was a difficult thing to do.

And if the Solars had known the conspiracy was coming, there was no chance it could have succeeded. A fraction of warning could have been enough to end all hope of overthrowing the solars forever.

Kejack was right.
>>
>>35303306
The Sidereals were also wrong, and everyone was pissed at them afterwards. The Shogunates brutality wasn't any less just because it was less elaborate.
They still genocided hundreds of thousands and made the majority of mortals work in backbreaking construction projects. They were just as callous and abusive, just with even less benefits.
>>
>>35303552
The loom isn't just personal destiny, which is tenuous at best. It's how causality and physics are enforced.
>>
>>35303456
What isn't better? Lots of shit, Creation is on the brink of CEASING TO EXIST. As in, BAM, no more anything.

The mad god part sucks, yes, but in a world where Essence and Gods and Titans exist, the first idea shouldn't be 'gee, fuck it all.' It should be coming up with a way to use them to your advantage and come up with some cooperation
>>
>>35303597
Mortals simply can't get the power needed to deal with these things. Even the Lunar realize that. There are simply things out there that dwarf mortal abilities to such a extent that they could not hope to deal with it.
Mortals can never have the power of Exalted because then they wouldn't be mortal anymore.
>>
>>35303621
Creation existed before Autocthon made the Loom of Fate, so it's not 100% essential. Creation could survive its loss. The detonation of a Protoshinmaic Vortex inside the loom, who knows?
>>
>>35303621
Nah ccausality and physics are written into creation. Thats stuff existed before the Loom because SWLIHN said so.
>>
>>35303606
The Shogunate was no less brutal- but its brutality was less total. The Shogunate could grind your body into grist to feed the mill of empire, but it couldn't steal your soul or twist you into a creature that exists solely to be their plaything.

Both of which were much-enjoyed pastimes among the rulers of the First Age.
>>
>>35303646
Hence the Beastmen breeding programs. I once played a Lunar who refrained from taking Hearts Blood and guided her half-caste children in a complex Bene-Gesseritt style breeding program to create an entire tribe of true-breeding half-castes, so they could do what she does without becoming monsters.

>>35303602
The problem with Limit is that NOBODY KNOWS IT EXISTS. None of the Exalts are capable of perceiving that the problem exists. that's part of the Great Curse. Autocthon had an inkling that something was wrong, but didn't have time to properly explore it before the Solars scared him away and he fell into a coma. Gaia isn't paying attention to anything lately. And all the gods are just as blind to the problem as the exalts.
>>
>>35303714
>but it couldn't steal your soul or twist you into a creature that exists solely to be their plaything
They can totally do the second one. And only very very few Solars could do the second one.

The "enjoyed pasttime" is a hyperbole, factually we don't actually know all that much about how the average Solar ruler was like. We know for a fact good and decent ones existed, so obviously not all of them were bad.
>>
>>35303624
Creation on the brink of ceasing to exist, you say.

Do you remember what it was that caused the Siderals to create the Great Prophecy?

It was the revelation that the very shinma were fraying under the efforts of the Solars to tinker with Creation- and that the first reaction of the Solars when the Sidereals informed them of this was "COOL! I wonder if we can make them dissolve any faster?"

They had to go. The Jade Prison may have been a foolish idea- but the Usurpation was an absolute necessity.
>>
>>35303759
>Hence the Beastmen breeding programs.
Beastmen fall under mortal for me, and they can't deal with renegade Primordials and Wyld Crusades or Shadowland incursions.
>>
>>35303714
>but it couldn't steal your soul or twist you into a creature that exists solely to be their plaything.
There are Terrestrial-level sorcery and necromancy spells that do EXACTLY THAT. The Shogunate actually had schools whose purpose it was to teach Terrestrials how to do that.
>>
>>35303759
Nobody knows limit exists. They just know that every once in a while, for no apparent reason, Solars and Lunars go apeshit crazy and usually kill anyone who's pissing them off in the slightest. Sidereals, by comparison, occasionally get too into their work.

That's why you can't tell a lucid solar from a mad solar: they're only ever one wrong question away from "everything explodes now."
>>
>>35303782
>that the very shinma were fraying under the efforts of the Solars to tinker with Creation
Bull-shit. What was being disrupted was the Loom of Fate not the Shinma, and the Loom isn't necessary to Creations existence.
>>
>>35303782
>Do you remember what it was that caused the Siderals to create the Great Prophecy?

>The Sagacious Watchers were often overworked.
Solars and even Lunars became increasingly reckless in
their Essence expenditures, using powerful Charms for
almost trivial reasons and making it nigh impossible for
the Sidereals to remain abreast of future disruptions of the
Loom of Fate.

There was no issue with the Shinma, the Loom was being disrupted from the Essence expenditure, and it just made it harder for the Sidereal to use the Loom to predict the future. Which is not at all vital to creations existence in any fashion.
>>
>>35303789
Primordials, yeah, nothing but Solars, Lunars, and Sidereals working together and armed with either High First Age weapons or Dwarven Weapons could stop them. But a large enough force of half-castes COULD stand against a Wyld Crusade or Shadowland Incursion. The whole point of my character was to make EVERY HUMAN IN CREATION into a half-caste. If every random peasant is capable of looking at a fey and saying 'hmm, lunch', then the fae will be less inclined to swing their dicks in that particular direction. If every soldier can use a charm that makes them immune to Wyld Shaping, the Fae lose their greatest weapon. Same goes for Shadowlands. It COULD work, given a large enough population. But that takes time and non-interference.
>>
>>35303932
But then the Primordials come and wreck your shit. Hell, half-Castes are weaker than Dragon-blloded, what are they going to do about a second Great Contagion ?
Creation needs epic God-Kings to protect it because it faces epic threats. Mortals can't handle these, thats why the Exalted exist.
>>
>>35303988
What primordials? There are none left. Autcthon is gone, Gaia is spaced out, and the Neverborn and Yozis are trapped in their respective prisons. The only way for them to get out is Celestial-level fuckery. Without Akuma and other traitors to work for them at the celestial level, they're not serious threats.
>>
>>35304069
There are still several Primordials out in the Wyld, and at least one that knows about Creation. Its one of the reasons the Directonal Titans were made. As a lesson drawn from the Aftershock War.
>>
>>35304092
The only one who knows is Autocron, and he's as good as dead already.
>>
>>35304123
No, there are still other Primordials. One of which attacked Creation in the Aftershock War, and one of Theyons crew is explicitly still unaccounted for.
