You wake up to an alarm you don’t remember setting, a loud blasting sound that instantly wakes up. You sit up quickly reaching halfway for a service rifle that you no longer have before realizing that, most likely, everything is fine.

Why would you do this?

Your eyes adjust to the light pouring in from the eastern windows and you see Karan staring at you. She’s holding a bull horn.

You scream in fear, but try to keep it brief.

Oh. You didn’t do this, she did.

“I waited an eternity just now, Michelle. If you don’t hurry you will be late for work, and if they kill you then I cannot. Please don’t make me wait again.”

Her avatar blinks out of existence.

You lean back against the headboard of the bed and cover your eyes with your hands. Your head hurts in two different ways now, and your mouth is dry.

You consider your choices without removing your hands.

You’ll get ready for work. All these new clothes Wendy bought you won’t wear themselves.

You stumble into the shower, glad that not only do you only need to make sure the door is closed behind you, but also because the floor is always warm to the touch. You open the faucet and the water is hot almost instantly and you slump down on the floor and let the water pour over you. You read the instructions on the conditioner carefully but it still doesn’t make sense to you. You try your best. At least the face and body washes are obvious.

You feel...better, as you wrap a towel around your hair and chest. Your mouth is still dry and everything is still too bright and your head still hurts.

You dry off quickly and brush what hair they let you keep as well as your teeth. You pull on your smallclothes and look at the dresser with all your new things in it. The scarf is hanging above it and you know that you want to wear that instantly.

You look at the weather quickly on your phone. Mid to upper 50s, potentially into the 60s.

You grab one of the new shirts and a pair of denim jeans and long, tall grey socks that go up to your calves, and a pair of boots that Wendy described as “motorcycle.” Whatever. You like them because they look cool and have these neat buckles on them.

You try walking down the stairs and discover that “motorcycle,” boots really don’t have any flexion in the sole. Hmm.

Wendy looks bored as she watches you clomp down the stairs as she pours a bottle of some dark colored liquid into a mug that has steam rising off of it.

“Fucking finally,” she says.

You rub your eyes. Why is Wendy here?

You mumble something about a good morning.

“...did we have a sleepover?”

“I let myself in. Karan let me in. Whatever.. Your coffee is disgusting, by the way. I tried calling you like twice but you just ignored them.”

She keeps pouring the bottle into her cup and takes a long drink off of it, her face scrunching up. She must tell you’re looking at her funny because she says,

“Hair of the dog. Also, it’s shit. It’s better if it’s mostly whiskey. You look...I don’t know the English word for “almost nice.””

You’re not positive, but that’s probably the nicest thing Wendy’s said to you this week.

She’s wearing a brown sweater with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows that goes down to her thighs and a black turtleneck. She’s also wearing gloves. You can’t see her legs.

“Karan had an air horn.”

“I know. I heard it and then I heard you scream. That was her idea, though. I just told her to wake your ass up.”

“O-oh.”

“You’re a little heavy footed in those boots.”

“They’re not like the ones I usually wear…”

“They’ll break in. Maybe. Bike boots usually have a pretty stiff sole. Just remember that you’re the one who picked those out.”

“I know…”

You have a lot of leftovers from last night. You should eat those before they go bad or Wendy does.

You drop one of the plain white takeout containers into the microwave and Karan dutifully begins reheating it for you.

You sit down at the island where Wendy is and wait patiently for your food.

She has her hair in a ponytail, draped over her shoulder. She knows you’re staring but limits her response to looking disappointed to slightly disgusted.

You’re saved from her gaze by the microwave ringing loudly. You pull it out and grab the training chopsticks with the elastic band around the top off the top of the counter where you guess you left them overnight. You pull pieces of pork and vegetable out one by one from the box and, with some effort, maneuver them into your mouth.

You say as you chew, making Wendy look away in further disgust, “So what do you think we’re going to do today?”

She just makes an ugh sound. “Shut up and eat.”

O-okay.

You do as your told and enjoy your pork. It doesn’t taste like you thought pork did but it’s good and you eat everything in the box. When you're done you wipe your hands and throw the empty box into the trash can in the kitchen area. Wendy finishes her alcohol-coffee and rinses the mug out in the sink and leaves it in there.

She catches you staring, “What? I’ll deal with it later.”

You shrug.

Wendy says, “I’ll see you at the office. I need to go home after and get some of my shit and whatever. We agreed last night that I’d start moving in this week.”

You look at her blankly.

“Remember?”

“No.”

“Oh. Well, I’m moving in. See you at work, roomie.”

She smiles like a feral animal and walks out the door, grabbing her bag on the way.

You guess you should go too. You idly wonder how they punish tardiness as you loop your scarf around your neck. Is it like a three strikes thing, and then they kill you?

Hmm. You engage the car in autodrive, because you can’t really feel the pedals in these boots. You hope there’s a pair in your locker today.

You sit in the driver’s seat with nothing to do.

You set your hands in your lap, tapping your fingers idly against your thighs, as you watch the world go by.

You’ve never been in a city this big ever. Crowds make you uncomfortable. It’s harder to spot the terrorists when it’s a one to ten ratio. At least being inside a car makes you feel anonymous, and anonymous is safe.

Traffic adds an extra five minutes to your commute but it gives you more time to look at everything in closer detail. People don’t look happy in Echo City.

The car takes you smoothly into one of the parking structures attached to your building and parks itself neatly in an empty stall.

Your feet hurt a bit as you walk from the lot into the office, and from the office down the halls until you’re finally back in the familiar smell of sweat and fear and urine in the ready room.

Skyler is there, wearing dark sunglasses and long sleeves, sitting next to Wendy.

He doesn’t move his head, but he must notice you since he says hey in a deep, rumbly way.

That’s not his usual voice.

“Hold on…”

He pulls his glasses down his nose and looks over the top of them, examining you.

“Did Wendy take you shopping again?”

You nod.

“Nice scarf.”

You sit down in a chair next to them and return the greeting.

You mumble out a thanks as you swipe your RFID badge across the face of your locker and pull the lock up and open. You swing the door out and look through today’s clothing and equipment. Service rifle, service sidearm, more regular gear… For clothing today you’ve been given an old, surplus Army field jacket with an infantry patch on it, a pair of ordinary looking dark denim jeans, and a pair of black lace up combat boots.

You should probably change. It’d be a shame if you put a hole in your new clothes.

You peel off your clothing layer by layer and replace them with clothing from the locker and sit down back down, leaning over to finish lacing up the boots. It doesn’t take long, and the three of you sit in silence.

Skyler shrugs, “Heroin? I just bought a new brick from Myanmyar and it’s pretty good, although I think I still might prefer one of the ‘Stan varieties. I suppose diversity is nice.”

He thinks for a second, and adds on, “Oh, I went to one of those tea houses for the first time in a while. I don’t think I’d smoke skooma again. Shooting is easier, eight days a week.”

“That’s nice…”

Wendy rolls her eyes and you try to avoid it by pulling out your phone. You don’t really know how to use it, but you figured out how to install games on it.

As you stumble through a puzzle game by randomly tapping the screen, a voice comes on over the room’s intercom.

“READY ROOM PLEASE CHANGE BACK INTO CIVILIAN GEAR. ANY ARTICLES DAMAGED WHILST ON THE JOB WILL BE COMPENSATED. REMAIN IN VEST WITH SERVICE FIREARMS. YOU ARE EXPECTED IN LOADING GARAGE FOUR BAY TERMINAL ONE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES.”

“Can they...do that?”

Wendy shrugs and says, “They can do whatever they want.”

She stands up and walks over to her locker and begins changing back into what she was wearing this morning. Skyler does so too, although it’s hardly as a dramatic change as Wendy.

You change too, finishing by wrapping the scarf around your neck and the service rifle on its sling around your shoulders.

You look at yourself in the mirror and pull the scarf up over your nose. You think you look nice.

“C’mon, dipshit.”

Wendy pulls at your sleeve and you look back and the contrast between her outfit and the thick ballistic vest and service rifle is weird.

What’s going on?

You walk through hallways which are beginning to seem familiar to you and into your assigned loading bay, where a very plain looking black SUV and driver is waiting for you.
He’s wearing a black suit and black tie and dark glasses and says to you, “We’re en route to a station for an interview for some girl. All you have to do is basically just stand around and make sure the thirty feet from the car to inside the station and back again go smoothly. Stations take talent security seriously so this should be easy for all of us. We’re just waiting for that little shit now and we’ll go.”

You all stand around, waiting. You whisper to the other two, “This seems too easy.”

They shrug, almost in unison. Wendy says quietly, “Jobs and teams are assigned randomly. Some days are easy. Some aren’t. Sometimes we just get lucky.”

Skyler adds in helpfully, “I wish we got lucky more often. I wonder who we’re with today.”

Wendy says, “Does it matter? I can’t even tell, like, half of them apart they all look the same. I don’t get how people recognize all of them.”

Skyler shrugs, “Spend enough time with them and you get used to it, eventually. Mostly. All the makeup and surgery makes it hard.”

Skyler suddenly stands up straight and says, “Oh, here she comes.”

Wendy rolls her eyes but also starts paying a little more attention. You should probably do the same.

She’s small, both shorter and more narrow shouldered than you, and you don’t think she looks familiar but you’ve only ever seen one or two of them and a lot happened these last few days. She’s accompanied by a man about Skyler’s height wearing a suit with a white shirt with a blue tie. He also has rectangular glasses on his face.

He walks her up to you and bows once, “She is in your care now, minasan. Please watch over her.”

He puts his hands on her upper arms and squeezes them (reassuringly?) and says to her, “Please call me when your interview is concluded but before you leave. I’ll be watching from here. Ganbate!”

She looks up at him and smiles. Is she going to cry?

The driver opens one of the doors for her and she climbs into the middle seat. He leaves it open for you and walks around the front of the car and hits the passenger’s side door once with his palm before getting into the driver’s seat.

The three of you decide that you and Skyler should bracket the girl and then Wendy will sit next to you in the window seat. It seemed better to put her away from the girl. Just in case.

The door of the garage rolls up and the SUV begins rolling out.

You sit there awkwardly, shoulder rubbing against Wendy because there isn’t much space in the back with four people. Wendy stares out the window, watching silently.

Skyler is talking to...whatever her name is, quietly. He’s still wearing his glasses and she is smiling, just barely. He seems almost...brotherly.

You wonder cynically what he gets out of it.

Nothing happens on your drive, which you suppose you’re thankful for. The driver pulls into a parking complex and arrows direct the vehicle inwards. He pulls to a stop in front of a wide elevator protected by several men in suits and (ballistic) vests with rifles looped around their shoulders.

This really does seem too easy.

The driver turns the car off and instructs you all to get out. Wendy goes first, followed by Skyler, then you, and then the girl. The driver rolls down the window just enough to speak out of,

“We’ll be waiting here. Radio us when you’re done or if something goes wrong.”

He rolls the darkly tinted window back up.

Well then.

The men page the elevator and the doors open immediately. Several of them get in while the rest stand their ground. One of them waves you in.

The elevator rides silently as it takes you up many floors. It dings, eventually, and everyone steps off. Someone who looks stressed and overworked appears and begins pulling the girl down a hall. The three of you flank her.

She’s pulled into a room by a woman, and Wendy follows her in leaving you and Skyler to watch the door. The first man stands by with you.

“Her segment is around twenty minutes long. She’ll enter and exit stage left, where the three of you will stand quietly. Once she’s done, you’re done, and you all get to go back to whatever unique shithole you had the bad luck of falling into. If anything happens, try not to shoot our guys. Any questions?”

“So...is there anything else on this floor? And if something does happen how do we get out?”

He makes a loud “ugh,” sound. “I hate new kids. We’re the only thing on this floor. The stage and audience are just over there. Everything else is office and working space. There are stairs at the east and west ends, but if someone gets past security we’re probably all dead anyways. Good luck, though. The network pays bounty if anyone makes it past the cordon.”

A little bit later the girl is popped out of the room, looking freshly made up. The man leads you to another room and opens the door for you all.

“Welcome to the green room. You’ll be given a ten, five, and one minute warning. Go through that door and you’ll be backstage. If someone tells you to do something, do it. Don’t waste my or their time. There’s water and some food on the table, help yourselves. Use the handset to contact me if sh- if something changes.”

He pulls the door shut behind him, leaving the four of you in a room about half the size of your living room. There’s a folding table with water and a tray of food on it, and a plain looking TV mounted on a wall is running some show. There are two couches and a handful of chairs to sit on.

You walk over to the table and grab some bottles of water and a little bit of food, although you’re still more or less full from breakfast. The three of them have settled down into the couches and all of them are on their phones. You offer a bottle to the girl and try to smile.

You do your best.

She takes it from you, looking at you...not distrustingly, but sceptically. Some doubt.

You mumble something about being here to protect her and she works very hard to remain pleasant.

“Thanks…”

You sit down and take a drink. Skyler and Wendy do their best not to look at you.

Nothing at all happens for a long time, until finally a small alarm announces your ten minute warning.

Five minute warning. The three of you your final shakedowns and you put your war face on. One minute warning. Brief huddle with them to discuss emergency plan, of which it’s mostly just run and gun down the stairs.

A buzzer sounds and you all lead her through the door, not quite knowing what to expect.

You’re surprised at how busy it is. You can’t see the stage, so you figure you must be directly behind it. A man with headphones and a clipboard spots you and walks towards you.

“Let’s go. We’re on commercial for another sixty seconds.”

He walks quickly, expecting you to follow him, and he leads you around the back and finally towards stage left, where you were told to be.

“Forty seconds. When I give the signal, walk in, wave, greet the host, wait until he’s seated, then you sit. Have you memorized the script?”

She nods.

“Good.”

He checks his watch. “Twenty seconds. On my mark.”

He puts his headphones back on and goes back to watching the hands on the dial move.

You count along with him, and that wasn’t twenty seconds. He begins waving his arm and the girl turns on her smile and walks on the stage waving.

You spend twenty minutes waiting, bored, on the side of the stage. You guess it goes well, since she seems content enough.

The return trip is as dull as the first, although traffic seems to have picked up.

This was a lot of work for a single twenty minute spot on some show or whatever it was you were at. You couldn’t really tell.

You find yourself back in the ready room, sitting in the same chair you were in this morning.

You have the rest of the day, and tomorrow, and it cost you nothing. Why can’t it always be like this?
