“Awright. Doc, gimme a range.”

“One-hundred yards, plus small change I would predict.”

“Strength?”

“Approximately three foot high snow wall, about six inches thick at the top level and flaring down.”

The four of you sat in a large fighting position, reinforced by wooden logs, sandbags, the works. At one-hundred yards away was another fighting position reinforced by packed snow, ice, and slush that your most hated enemy has decided to take cover in. And that enemy was Bohater. Today’s mission was to capture the enemy and neutralize her (by giving her a bath. She really actually stinks.) All this is in Helvetia, in the shadow of Hill 313.

To your left was the Liberion M5A1 Stuart Witch, known by the moniker of “Jeb”.

To her left was the Karlslander StuG III Witch, known by the sobriquet of “Doc”.

And to your right was Liberion M4 Sherman Crocodile Witch, known by the nom de guerre of “Burnie”.

You are Rosemary Finken. You are a Tank Witch. And today your mission is to assault Bohater’s Hill and make her take a bath.

“Righto. Here’s da plan,” says Burnie as she hungrily leers at Bohater through her binoculars. “Doc, Jeb, y’all are gonna run interference to da left. I’ll rush up da center and grab her while Rosie the Rookie here hangs back and provide supporting fire. Doc, Jeb, you advance under overwatch, cover each other and don’t do nothing stupid. Use dem snowdrifts for cover. Rosemary, keep her head down while I get out there. Keen?”

You nod, frowning a little. “Okay. I can understand that. Why can’t I go up with you all though?”

Jeb peers through her binoculars as well, tongue stuck out in thought. “Well... It’s basically a matter of experience. Never underestimate a Polanian when she doesn’t want to do something. Bohater ain’t too different and she ain’t exactly going to take no bath without no fight.”

You blink. That was too many negatives.

“Jeb’s right. We need veteran witches on this! I’d ask Skip and her friend Hessler to come with us but you know how busy they are,” says Burnie. She mockingly puts her hands up to her head in an imitation of Captain Kelly’s animal ears. “Oooh, look at me, I’m Captain Skip. I know how to engineer and all that bullshit, blah blah blah, math is awesome!”

Doc confusedly looks at Burnie. “But math is awesome.”

“Whatever,” says Burnie. She pats your shoulder, narrowing her eyes. “Rosie, it’s all on ya. Keep us covered. We’re going in!”

Jeb, Doc, and Burnie go over the top and proceed to rush and scream at Bohater. They trundle through the deep snow, stomping and kicking. This is not the weather for running unfortunately. You sigh as you look through the binoculars at Bohater’s position. Sure enough, the little bear has awoken from her nap, and is now proceeding with the snowballs.

“AH! SON OF A WHORE!” yells Jeb as she ducks down. Doc is not too lucky as she receives a faceful, a chestful, and a legful of snowballs in quick turn. She falls over, defeated. “Doc’s down!”

You pat some snowballs up and peek over the top. Bohater’s throwing snowballs like some kind of Santa Clausian Elf.

Well, at the Academy, accuracy was king. You stick out your thumb to give yourself a rudimentary sight. Up at that fighting position, Jeb and Burnie are still pinned down in their own little snow drifts by the incredibly furious throwing of Bohater. That girl’s got an arm, jeez. Alright, anyway, wind’s relatively nill, only about one hundred yards.

Should be an easy throw. You wind up your arm and let fly the snowball. It speeds across the distance and nails Bohater right in the helmet, dazing her.

“Go!” yells Jeb. They immediately advance with the few seconds they have. Bohater quickly gets her helmet straight then throws a snowball straight at you.

Uh oh.

The next thing you realize is that you’re on the ground, your cheek hurts, and there’s snow all over your face.

You sigh. Girl’s got an arm.

“My, my, what do we have here?” You look up to see Captain Kelly, along with two other Witches. The overall commander, Colonel Hessler, and the Royal Farawayland Artillery Witch that is her second in Command, Major Breda. Captain Kelly smiles at you, along with Breda, while Hessler simply looks at you like you’re some stupid kid. “Lying down on the job already, Rosemary?”

> “No, no, we’ve got things under control.”

You quickly stand up and dust down your clothes. It’s all a little wet now, dang it. “Uh- No, no, ma’am. Everything is under control!”

You all look over to Bohater’s fighting position. Jeb and Burnie are thrown out of it like sacks of potatoes. They slam into the snow. Oh, goodness. They hurried stand back and try for another rush.

You look back at the Officers, a little less than sure of yourself now. “Um. Is there something you’re here for, Captain?”

Captain Kelly tugs on your cheek like an old auntie, giggling. You can’t help but feel a bit small at that. “Oh, no worries, love. I’m just coming to check in on my best girls here. I assume all is jolly good except for little Bohater’s distaste of the bath for some reason.”

Major Breda giggles a bit. “Well, I’d like to join in! I’ve got an arm…“ She looks at Hessler, who is very clearly saying “Nein” with her eyes. “… that is better suited for calculating mathematical coordination of artillery and not for snowball fights,” says Breda, more sadly and with her smile gone.

Colonel Hessler says, “Well said, Major.” She looks down at you. “As for you, I am sure you can things under control like the good disciplined Karlslander you are. Me and Breda must go oversee the positions on the Hill.”

“Right,” says Captain Kelly. She gives a salute to them as the two begin their walk. Captain Kelly chuckles a little as she watches Bohater wrestle with Jeb and Burnie, clearly beginning to feel the strain of superior numbers. “I remember when I was like that as a wee child. Not too much to care about.”

You cross your arms. “You ever miss those days, Captain?”

“Of course, nobody likes growing up.” She sighs. “Unfortunately, my duties as an Officer is not to be a kid. It is to be a doting mother.” She frowns a little. “I’d be a terrible mother.”

You smile at the Captain. For all her formalities and Britannianess, she can be quite nice. Jolly in a sense as she usually says. “Well, I would like for a mom. Do you think you could be a doting mom to Bohater, though?”

Captain Kelly sighs with a smile on her face. “I suppose I can. Come on.” You head through the deep snowdrift, passing by Doc. “Hello, Doc. Do you need assistance?” Doc simply reads her field manual on medical dressing as she lies back, snow all over her.

“Nein, keep on going, Skip,” says Doc as she adjusts her glasses a bit.

Once you pass by, Captain Kelly says, “Sometimes I worry for Doc.” You tilt your head, confused. “You know the 10th Panzer Division, correct?”

You nod. “Yes, I-“ Oh. Wait. Surely…

“Yes,” says Captain Kelly. “Deplorable. Encircled by Neuroi forces. Destroyed to a man. Very few survivors, never been reformed.” You look back to Doc, who apparently hasn’t heard you. On her stalhhelm is indeed the Divisional logo of the 10th Panzer Division. Oh, that poor girl. You never realized that.

“But, enough sadness, time to have some fun!” Captain Kelly grins as she trots up to the fighting position. Sure enough, Jeb and Bohater are actually being chokeheld by the incredibly tiny Polanian, Bohater. “Bohater, stand down. It’s time for your bath.”

“Oh thank God, it’s Skip!” yells Jeb, her face turning a bit blue from lack of oxygen.

Bohater looks up at Skip, glaring at her and puffing out her cheeks.

“No, don’t give me that look, Miss.” Captain Kelly proceeds to walk over, bend down, and tug Bohater’s ear. Bohater lets go of the stricken Liberions, who collapse. They start panting, gasping for breath again as Captain Kelly drags a very unwilling Bohater away. “Come on, double quick. It’s time for our baths.”

The little bathhouse for you Witches has been assembled like a mobile home from the side of a Mack truck. A tent has been struck down, and the snow has been piled out, leaving you all with enough tubs for the six of you, and then some. Hot water is provided courtesy of Burnie’s inherent magic. It unsurprisingly involves heating things up, and that includes water.

You sigh, relaxing in your bath. You look to see Jeb and Doc washing each other, sharing a tub. Bohater simply stews in her own bath, angrily glaring ahead. Burnie relaxes happily, hanging off the side, while Captain Kelly enjoys a nice cup of tea.

Jeb tunes the radio to something good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYDmJbFS7HY

Doc says, “Jeb, is this all you listen to?”

“Doc,” Jeb leans back, arching her back and turning her naked breasts high. “When you’re in the jungle and all you have is a banjo, this is all you can listen to.”

You step into Bohater’s bath, to which she only turns her eyes at you angrily. “Come on, Bohater, you need to get clean. People don’t like messy little girls.”

Bohater simply gives you a look that say she would probably eat your head off if she weren’t so small. Ah, little girls like this are like Chihuahuas, all bark, some bite, no size. You grab a sponge and wring it over her hair, wetting it. She further stews down into the bath, half of her head completely buried in the water, and her cheeks red from the heat.

Burnie sighs, smiling. “Hey, Rosie, use the good shampoo, she hates that.”

Bohater looks up at you, quirking her brow lividly. Eh, you might as well. You pick up the good shampoo bottle and flick it open. You take a quick whiff. Hm, strawberries. You squirt it down on her hair, and you swear you could see it start cooking like an egg.

Captain Kelly smiles at you. “Bohater is surprisingly receptive to you, Rosemary.”

You smile. “Well, I consider myself agreeable, Captain.” You scrub the shampoo through her hair. This is some bully hair, you can barely keep it down. You can feel some grit and dirt through it too. Does Bohater just roll around in the mud when you’re not looking? Goodness.

Man, the Rookie would be having a complete conniption right now.

But regardless, you wash down her hair once it’s done. She looks up at you, clearly angry despite the fact that you can’t see her eyes behind her wet hair blocking her face. Aw, that’s cute. But you’re still going to clean her. You grab some soap and a rag and start washing over her body, first her back, then you move onto her hips. She’s surprisingly very curvy for someone of her size.

Jeb looks over at you. “So, Rosemary. Quick question.” You look up at her as you press your hands underneath Bohater’s breasts. “What’s with the StuG E you use? Ain’t that obsolete?”

“Yeah,” says Burnie. “Dat thing’s older than my grandmother and she’s old enough to have been Stonewall Jackson’s maid.”

You shrug. “I would like another Striker. The StuG model E is old, but it’s a reliable platform. Still however, I am trained to use heavier Strikers like the Tiger or the Koenigstiger. I hope when the logistics issues are solved, I can get my hands on one.”

“Bully that,” says Jeb. “Me, I’d like a faster tank than my Stuart. I love my Stuart but it is showing its age a bit.”

“You all talk like old women,” says Doc. “The Sturmgeschutz is a fine platform.”

Jeb smirks a bit, her eyes half-lidded. “You’re only saying that because you use the G you cute little kraut.”

Doc huffs, crossing her arms. “Please.”

You continue to bathe Bohater down. Now that you think about it. What did Captain Kelly say about Bohater again? Post-Traumatic Vocal Disarticulation? What could’ve rendered this poor girl so speechless. You hate to imagine that so you quickly push it out of your mind. Now comes Bohater’s legs. “Kick up your legs, Bohater.”

Bohater shakes her head, glaring furiously at you.

You frown a little, mopey. “Come on, Bohater. Please?”

She continues glaring at you.

You continue pouting at her. The rest of the unit looks at the both of you, expectantly.

Bohater looks away, her face red either from the heat or embarrassment. Slowly but surely, her legs break the water, rising up for you. You smile and say, “There, that wasn’t so hard.” You start scrubbing her ankle, whistling a bit. You glance over to the others, who look particularly shocked.

“Bo’s never done that before,” Jeb whispers to Doc.

“Why don’t you ever do that for me,” asks Doc.

“Because you never say please to me like that,” says Jeb.

Burnie nods admirably. “I think we found our Firefly whisperer.”

Oh jeez. You start scrubbing underneath her thighs, squeezing a bit at her firm and shapely legs. One thing you must note, this girl at least keeps in exercise. That’s the thing about these Strikers that a lot of witches are sure to love: every day is leg day in a Striker Unit, and the results certainly show.

Captain Kelly sips her tea, checking the time. “Oh dear, bath time’s almost over. I haven’t scheduled anything after this. Did you girls want to do anything?”

Burnie grins. “Maybe we could go up yonder onto them kraut foxholes on da hill. I want to show them Karl boys how to start a fire!” She snaps her finger, further grinning with her sharp teeth. “And by start a fire, I mean to say using a bit of flamethrower and-“

“No,” says Captain Kelly quickly. Burnie sulks.

“We could have dinner, ma’am,” you say.

Captain Kelly nods. “Good call. Burnie, perhaps you could cook something for us?”

Burnie scratches her chin, pensive. “Hm… s’pose I could. I’ll figure out what I can cook with what we have in our kitchens round here.”

“Exquisite.” Captain Kelly stands up, baring her wet clean body to the world. “Right then, girls. Finish up your baths, get dressed. We’ll have dinner very soon.” She steps out and grabs a towel, then proceeds on out of the tent.

Burnie stands up as well, her generous assets jiggling a bit. She grins, “Awrighty, you moochers. I’m gonna be cooking up a storm so don’t y’all wait up for me.” She hops out, nearly slipping on the ground before heading out as well.

And as they said, after a few more minutes, Jeb and Doc leave, drying themselves off as they leave the tent. That just leaves you and Bohater. You continue scrubbing her, then she stands up to leave. “Nope.” You pull her back down. “You’re not done yet,” you say.

She crosses her arms, angrily glaring at the tent wall. “Come on,” you say. “Just bear with me.” You press up against her back, further sending the heat up her cheeks you wash her feet, getting in between her toes and everything. Her soft skin and the water feel great in your hands.

Sometimes, you kinda wish Bohater would talk. On the other hand, her silence is quite enduring in its own little way.

But finally, after a time, you let her go. You both leave the tent, out into the biting cold snow, then quickly run over to the other side to the other tent. This is the barracks. Nobody is in you’re afraid so that leaves you and Bohater to get dressed. She quickly puts on her trousers and her bra and works on buttoning up her usual uniform. You’re already dressed in seconds however, Karlslander way after all.

You take a curious look at her footlocker though. You walk over and look down to see a little picture. “Is that you, Bohater?” Bohater looks over to see you pick up a picture. It looks like Bohater, smiling (you’ve never seen her smile). Behind stand four tall men, grinning happily. They wear uniforms of the Polanian military.

Bohater quickly swipes the picture from you, glaring angrily as she usually does.

You smile, just a little. “Brothers?” Bohater nods, placing the photo back into her footlocker and slamming it shut. “It’s- It’s alright. I mean-… I’m an only child so I wouldn’t really know.” Yes, it’s best not to ask where they are. It’s probably obvious. Not like she’d answer you anyway.

Bohater harumphs silently as she walks past you. “Hey, listen,” you say. She stops, turning to you. “You know. I know you don’t like talking much.” You walk up to her, hands clasped together behind your back. “But, you know can talk to me. Just the little things.”

Bohater stares at you, not with a glare, but with a confused look on her face.

“I mean- I don’t know if you’re like physically or psychologically unable to talk. Just- If you want to talk, I’m here,” you say quickly. “And, I’m not going anywhere.”

Bohater sizes you up, slowly, with her eyes. She shuts her eyes, then shrugs as she turns around again to walk out of the tent. Well, at least you’re going somewhere. Time for dinner.

“Order up!” Burnie piles down a huge helping of what appears to be gumbo of some kind. “There ya go, eat up! Cooked it with my flamethrower fuel, gives it a nice zest and flavor I reckon.”

… You’re pretty sure things cooked with gas fire directly don’t taste very good.

Regardless, the others eat it up very well as you all sit around a fire. The sun is starting to set on the day it seems. Now that you think about it, you haven’t heard much from Southern Gallia. You hope your good friend sends you a letter soon or something. But heck, you just got here after all.

Captain Kelly says, “You cook a fine gumbo, Burnie, I underestimated you.”

Burnie looks up from her book. You hear the click of a zippo as she shuts it. Was she trying to burn that book? “Oh, yeah. Totally.”

Hm, well, actually, if she whipped it up in less than four hours, then she probably cooked the meat before boiling it. Okay, that works.

> “So where do you all come from?”

You take a spoonful of gumbo and pop it in. It’s actually surprisingly good. Maybe Burnie’s inherent magic includes cooking. After swallowing, you say, “So. You know, I’m from Karlsland.”

“Really?” says Jeb. “We hadn’t noticed.”

You roll your eyes. “I’m from Karlsland. Just wanted to know where you all come from, what units you were with.”

Doc nods. “10th Panzer Division for a time, then I got switched over to the Medical Corps. Before that, Munich.” She smiles, sighing dreamily. “Ah, Munich. Cannot wait to see it liberated.”

“Well!” Jeb grins, pointing her finger up for attention. “This girl here is from the southron part of Liberion, the best part. 1st Tank Battalion with the US Marines at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Isles campaign before I got picked up for the Joint Tank units.” She starts to turn around, grinning. “Wanna see the tat I got for my birthday-“

“Nobody wants to see it,” says Doc quickly. Jeb pouts at her, turning back again.

Burnie laughs. “Well, I’m from the South too, that makes little Jeb here-“ Burnie tugs on Jeb’s cheek. Jeb growls a bit. Nobody likes being treated like a child. “My little sister. 2nd Armored Division, served in Africa and Normandy for a spell before being switched in.”

You all look at Captain Kelly. “And you?” you ask.

“Doncaster,” she says as she sips on her tea. “Hobart’s Funnies for a time. The old bloke actually recommended me for command after I distinguished myself with my engineering capabilities.”

“Hey, Skip, you ever need those engineering capabilities?” says Burnie slyly.

“… No, I have not found a use for them just yet,” says Captain Kelly. You smile a bit at that. “And of course,” she continues. “We all know Bohater has served with the 1st Polanian Armored.” She pats Bohater’s helmet as she eats her gumbo.

“Jeez, a Marine, huh?” asks Burnie.

Jeb looks at her indignantly. “You got something to say about the Corps?”

“Oh, nothing, just wondering if you ever uh…” Burnie smirks, licking at her teeth a bit. “Tossed the bed with someone or something? I know those jungles can get weird.”

Jeb blushes, looking away. “I- I never! I’m a good girl! I wouldn’t-“

Doc smiles. “Come on…”

“Ah stop it!” says Jeb. “Just because I was surrounded by dozens of muscular men all day don’t mean I’d spread my legs like some country cowgirl on a Sunday night after mass!” She waves her hand a bit. “Hell, we once literally tossed a bed out a window, but that’s a story for later! Anyway, y’all fuck off. Y’all, treat this like it’s some sort of game.” She points angrily at Doc. “I BET YOU NEVER HAD YA FIRST KISS.”

Doc shrugs. “Nope.”

“That’s blunt,” says Jeb.

“It’s the truth,” says Doc. She looks over at you. “Say, Mary. What about you? You ever kiss anybody?” Oh here we go.

You sigh. “Well… there was this medic once.”

Doc, Jeb, and Burnie slide in, grinning. “Oooooh, lifesaver, go on!” says Doc.

You roll your eyes. “I was spending my rotation period in Africa with General Rommel. I was actually shadowing him in order to get a better idea of what goes in the command tents, you know? Anyway, this Neuroi attack happened. I was, rushing to my Striker. It happened very fast, very fast. Before I knew it, I had been blown off my feet, and knocked unconscious.”

Their smiles drop a bit. “Oh. Was it just CPR?”

You blush a little, nodding. “Well, yes. I woke up a few minutes later. His mouth was on mine, and it was…” You hold your chin a bit. It was nice but you don’t want them to know that. “Interesting.”

“Did you get his name?” asks Jeb.

“Sawyer Hackett,” you say. “Volksdeutscher from Liberion. I haven’t seen him since actually, I’ve been very careful not to get hit or wounded. I mean, that was back in 43 anyway, he’s probably off elsewhere.”

“Was he handsome?” asks Burnie.

“He was, actually,” you say. “Not like Johannes, more… charming.”

“That still doesn’t count as a first kiss though,” says Doc.

“I don’t care,” you say.

Burnie smirks, sitting back up and proceeding to go back to trying to set her book on fire with her zippo. “Well, y’all can argue on them semantics of lip wrestling another time I suppose.”

“Yes, indeed.” You all look up to see Colonel Hessler and Major Breda walking up to you. “Captain Kelly.” She stands up and salutes. “I need you and your girls on the hill. Blaskowitz’s Air Recon has spotted Neuroi coming in from the north-east, we might be hit soon.”

Captain Kelly nods. “Alright, Colonel. Any details?”

“No, you are free to do as you need.” Colonel Hessler looks at all of you. “As for you all, I expect diligances, an eternal vigil. The Fallschirmjaeger are the finest Karlsland has to offer, but they are not invincible. Their lives are in your hands.”

Burnie whistles a bit. “No pressure or anything.” Hessler places her hands on her hips, glaring at Burnie. “Just saying.”

She's a good soldier that sometimes gets into shenanigans, though usually as an incidental party rather than an instigator. She's also a caretaker for girls she finds a need to care for. So, really, she's not too much different from her previous incarnation, except she needs far less psychological counseling and meds.

... So, uh, I guess my statement of her "not having an outstanding character" is actually false.

“Sehr gut,” she says. “Major Breda.” She turns to the Farawayland Witch. “Go make sure the mortar positions behind the hill are secure.” Major Breda nods and starts running off. “The rest of you, you already know your place.” She begins marching off.

Captain Kelly looks down at you, her smile faded. “Alright, lassies. Get up and lets go. Here’s how it’ll go down. We’ll pair off. Two witches on the 12 O’Clock, the 1:30, and the 3 O’Clock positions on the hill. Hull down positions as needed. I’ll have the paratroopers dig up fallback positions on the crest. Start pairing up.”

You smile at Bohater. “Welp, come on. Let’s get to work then.” Bohater simply glares at you as usual. You’ll have to take her silence as yes. “Captain, we’ll take the 1:30 position.”

“Jolly good,” says Captain Kelly.

Climbing the hill wasn’t easy. First off, instead of wearing your Strikers, the Colonel insisted you carry them up there to keep your magical signatures from alerting Neuroi of the location of Witches. Secondly, you also had to carry entrenching tools up there as well. Thirdly, the slope that you’re working on is actually pretty steep. It wasn’t gradual like the slope you walked up, this is more like a sheer 45 or 50 degree slope.

But finally, you did manage to get to work. Or rather Bohater did, because as soon as you said, “Right, let’s work,” she started working.

And soon enough, before you finished your own fighting position, she had finished a hull-down position for the both of you, and her own fighting position.

“Bohater.” You look at her as she rests in the snow. “Can you please help?”

She shakes her head.

Hmph. Just because she can work doesn’t mean she can’t not help.

“Guten abend.” You look up to see a trio of Fallschirmjaeger, bundled up in greatcoats, scarves, and gloves. One of them is familiar to you however. It’s Johannes Bucholz. “Rosemary, yes?” You nod, smiling. Wow, he makes them men look tiny. Six feet nine is nothing to shake a stick at. He offers you a cup of coffee. “Would you like some coffee?”

You stand up out of the hole and quickly take the cup. You let the warm liquid wash down your gullet, and warm every fiber of your body. Ah, good coffee. “Thank you, Johannes. This is good coffee.”

One of the paratroopers says, “I should hope so. I made it myself. You don’t get too many coffee beans out there so I used some clever substitutes.” You look down at your cup. Oh boy…

Johannes smiles, slapping the paratrooper with the big mouth on the back, nearly flooring him and making him spill his coffee. “This is Michael Kerner. Man with a big mouth.” Johannes gestures to the other paratrooper, a shorter one with glasses not unlike Doc’s. “That’s Oswald Stern.”

You smile at the both of them. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Oswald motions to your fighting position. “That is a sorry looking fighting position.” Wow. None of these paratroopers have any tact. “Do you want us to help you with that?”

You shake your head, your smile now turning into one of nervousness. “Oh, nein nein, I could not-“ Too late. Oswald and Johannes jump and start digging it up for you. “… ask that of you.”

Michael chuckles, wheezing a bit, then throwing into a coughing fit. “Agh… Knuddel and Oswald are those kinds of people. They see a girl in need and are quick to react.”

You lean on your shovel, nodding. “I suppose.” Bohater walks over, confused. “Oh, I should introduce you three. Michael, Oswald, Johannes-“ They all look at Bohater, who glares at the three of them. “This is Bohater. She’s a Witch as well, for a Sherman Firefly to be precise.”

Johannes smiles, then steps out of the hole. Bohater steps back, completely floored by how big Johannes is. He offers his hand, smiling. “It is nice to meet you.”

Bohater continues to stare at him, almost… fearfully? Johannes chuckles a bit. “Heh, I see the issue,” he says. He takes off his helmet, then kneels down to Bohater’s level, going eye to eye with her even. “Hi there.”

Bohater stares at him, all kinds of emotions running across her face.

“Don’t worry, I’m no monster,” says Johannes. “I have a sister. You look just like her, when she was much younger.” He carefully pats Bohater’s helmet. “I am sure others find you cute.”

Bohater goes back to glaring at him. Johannes simply laughs. He looks back at you. “Your little Bohater does not talk?” You shake your head. “Ah, well.” He turns back to Bohater and says, “No matter. I don’t need words to show you I can be your friend, Bohater.”

Bohater blinks, her glare disappearing. Carefully, she slowly takes Johannes’ hand and shakes it. Johannes grins warmly, almost like a proud father.

This is kind of why I'm ticked off with how German's writing how people interact with Johannes: I actually like the guy a lot, but the only people who haven't creamed their panties when they meet him are Bucholz and Rookie. And Bohater actually not scowling at someone is her equivilant of such. It's really annoying, I kind of want someone to, well, not dislike him, just not have any particular reaction to him other than "fuck that guy's huge".

Well, aside from Rookie: I was impressed that German didn't write anything about how hot he was when she met him.

> Talk to Johannes and crew

You jump back in your hole and start digging with Johannes and Oswald. Johannes looks up at Michael, who simply stands with Johannes and his own cup of coffee. “You not going to help, Michael?”

He shrugs. “Hey, you all volunteered.”

Johannes shrugs as well, then strikes the snow. He tosses it right onto Michael. He staggers back, beating the snow off of him while Oswald laughs. “Ah, to hell with you, Knuddel. I won’t be helping you when you need me to dig your fighting position.” Michael chuckles as he drinks out of Johannes’ cup of coffee.

You ask, “So what brought you into the Fallschirmjaeger?”

“Well most of us enlisted into the Luftwaffe,” says Oswald. He motions to Johannes. “Johannes is here because he is gigantic. Michael is here because he was too big for planes. But for me and Michael, we figured the pay would be better, and that we would uh…” he shrugs, “get more glory out of it.”

“And look at us now,” says Michael. “Digging holes for a pair of a witches on a cold Winter night. Orussia was way colder but still… I miss summer.”

“We all do,” says Johannes.

“Besides,” says Michael. “You get a neat little badge!” He points to a medal over his left breast pocket. It’s a golden eagle diving with the Karlslander cross in its talon. Surrounding it all is a silver wreath. “Neat, yes?”

You smile. “It is. I actually was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class for action in Africa.”

Michael frowns a bit. “It’s not a contest.”

With that, Johannes and Oswald climb out. “Alright. Now that is a fighting position,” says Oswald.

Johannes smiles down at you. “If you need more help, you can call us.” With that, the three wave goodbye to you and start leaving. You look down to see Bohater, already settling into her own fighting position, her Striker nestled into the ground and ready for deployment behind her.

Graf was well written, you just got asshurt that someone dared to be "better" in an insignificant way in the quest. For all the accolades she had, her actual accomplishments in the quest add up to precisely nothing compared to everything we've done, and she was hardly rude to us (our character might disagree, but Rookie's a kid, acts like a kid, and maybe some day we'll actually get slapped for it). Hell, we're getting the carpet we want to munch on so badly.

Christ, you don't even know why I dislike her. I don't dislike her because she's better, hell, I actually liked her when she first came on the scene as an arrogant, cocksure ace. She has yet to keep the same personality for longer than a thread, and she doesn't even fit the idea and theme that German has stated was hers.

As for Johannes, you haven't even read why I'm pissed off: he's basically causing the Eugene Effect on EVERYONE but Rookie and Bucholz, which is annoying because he's a perfectly good character otherwise.

> Rest in your own fighting position

You sigh, sitting down in your newly christened fighting position. Now this is comfy. And defensible as well! In its own hole sit your Striker Units, for when the Neuroi make the inevitable attack.

You’re not optimistic. They are going to attack. It might be brutal for the paratroopers, but you can at least make sure to blunt the damage on them. You look up, to see the trees, and the starry night sky above you. You’d try to sleep, but that coffee’s actually got you slightly awake now.

You sit up a bit, peering over the lip of the fighting position. Bohater has already fallen asleep, her helmet tipped over her eyes as she lies back against the wall of her fighting position. That’s cute.

Hopefully things aren’t too bad in Southern Gallia.

… What’s that noise? A whining whistling…

You cover your head and duck. The tree next to your hole explodes. You’re showered in bark and splinters. Another explosion, and another, and another. “GET DOWN!” yells someone. “ARTILLERY!” You curl up, letting snow and dirt rush over your fighting position with blow and hit. The ground rumbles and shakes with every hit. Neuroi using artillery. That’s something.

You curiously peek up, Bohater is ducked down. Good, good. All she has to worry about are stray shots landing in her hole. Bright flashes assault your eyes. You blink hard and duck back in. You hear the sharp crack of trees splintering, the thoom of the ground getting battered by Neuroi powered shells. You can feel your stomach churning under the shake of it all. Oh please stop.

They’ve stopped. You look up and around. You can hear someone moaning. Someone’s hit. It’s not any of the Witches, it’s a soldier.

This is always an arbitrary measurement. For some people, long and believable in an anime quest is "at first sight I want to fuck." For others they think weeks and months of absurd levels of abuse and obvious disinterest in us means "She's totally into me."

Basically, I was right: you're jealous about an NPC getting attention that is, at best, fleeting. It's nowhere near 'overboard' unless you also want to call Daphne's frankly creepy obsession with Rookie-hair overboard, or Rookie's obsession over Bucholz.

If you're trying to somehow seek out realistic portrayals of relationships or attraction between people, THIS IS NOT THE QUEST TO BE IN. You're here for the lesbian pandering, at least admit it. 'swhat I'm here for.
>>
>>35291033
But everyone has different celeb crushes.
Like, you'd think every girl wants Ryan Gosling from the way the internet talks about him but I don't know anyone who's that into him. My male friends run the whole spectrum of women-celebs. It just strikes me as rather unlikely that practically all the witches have one on Johannes.

All of the anons sperging out makes up a good chuck of the amusement of this thread some how.
>>
>>35290876
>The ground rumbles and shakes with every hit. Neuroi using artillery. That’s something.
>Someone’s hit. It’s not any of the Witches, it’s a soldier.
>Threadanons chose instead to bicker over mildly questionable portrayal of b-list side character.
>>
>>35291165
What's there to talk about here? It's not even like we know any soldiers in this place to speculate the injured one's identity.
>>
>>35291115
....dude, a personification of perfect aryan race is descended upon them, and compared to Steward he is on same rank with them, making him fair play.

> Go out and help him

You wait a moment. Still groaning, gurgling a bit even. Oh, where’s Doc?

Alright, to heck with it. You grab a spare syrette of morphine from your bag then stand up. Bohater looks at you, motioning for you to get down. You yell, “Stay down! I’ll be fine! Just stay down!” You clamber out of the hole and start sprinting.

You hop over shell crates, leap over fallen branches, and keep on running. Around you, paratroopers tell you to duck, to take cover somewhere, or to just keep running. They have the right idea, honestly, you don’t.

But you can’t leave a man to suffer.

Finally, you see him. You run down over to him, a paratrooper lying on his back, a burning hole in his greatcoat. He must have caught a piece of shrapnel. He groans, writhing. “Relax, relax,” you say as place your hands on him. “It’s okay.” He mutters something, almost a cry to his mother you think. You feel your heart drop further. Doc!

Doc runs over, sprinting. Oh thank goodness. “What’s the damage?” she asks.

“I- I-…” You point to the hole. “I think it’s shrapnel.” Doc nods, setting down a medical kit and pulling out some tools. “A-are you not going to heal him?”

“Magic is for regeneration, not for removing shrapnel,” she says. “Do you have morphine?” You nod, handing your syrette over to her. “Sehr gut.” She quickly rolls up the man’s sleeve, then hurriedly injects the morphine in. “Alright. Just-“

Snow splashes over you. The whistling starts filling your eyes as more shells hit the hill. “Ah, no!” Doc crawls over to the man’s arms, then starts dragging him away. “Take cover!” You try to follow her. “No! No! Spread out!” You turn away and dive to the ground, crawling as the ground shakes and erupts.

“Hey!” You look over to see Oswald and Michael, holding their hands out to you and yelling. They’re in a relatively deep fighting position. “Come on! Get in! Get in!”

Actually, I agree with you on that. But no, you're not right that I'm mad because he's getting attention, otherwise I would have been pissed about Jimmy Stewart.

Remember that scene on BoB?

poor Oswald and Michael.
>>
>>35291174
Well, if German bends over backwards to certain thread "anons", we'll have something else to talk about when he puts Johannes on the bus, just like he did with Graf.
>>
I think Johannes is mostly fine too, I just can't really see how he was able to make more progress with Bohater than even her own unit in just a matter of seconds.

This.
Personally I'm disappointed in the lack of lesbian pandering, way too much 'oh isn't he a hunk' 'oh Sawyer~' 'dohoho I bet you got gangrailed in the jungle by those strong, muscly fellows', etc. The SW I watched kepts its scant few hints of heterosexuality to tasteful romance and let the lesbians monopolize lewdness, Schteel! I thought I could trust you! Where's your regard for the shallow readers?
>>
>>35291141
>>35291165

Why do Schteel quests attract sperging over the most inconsequential shit? It's ridiculous. I can sperg with the best of them but only when I feel like something is actually on the line.

Is this going to end up like that Band of Brothers scene?

He's a big teddy bear who isn't constantly trying to force words out of her mouth, unlike us.
>>
>>35291213
Technically speaking, he was already put on the bus back in thread... 16? And I like him just fine, I'm just irritated by German's replacing people being attracted to others normally with exploding panties.

>>35291214
I thought about it, and "Johannes big brother status + Bohater having (had?) lots of big brothers = Bohater warming to Johannes quickly" makes sense.
>>
>>35291214
It makes sense given the whole picture and shit. Doesn't make it better to me since it happened JUST beforehand making it way too blatantly planned for me.
>>
>>35291294
No actually it's perfectly acceptable for a QM to make plans for character interactions and stuff
>>
>>35291282
I know that's what it is, and I can totally understand it, but still, it just feels like it happened unnaturally quick to me.
>>
>>35291322
So did Daphne's panty-wetting obsession with our hair but because you like that sort of thing you're not asshurt about it
>>
Schteel, pls don't negotiate with terrorists
>>
>>35291347
I never said I liked that?

> Crawl to Oswald and Michael

You start crawling towards them, gritting your teeth. “You can do it!” yells Michael. “Crawl! Crawl!”

Oswald nods, frantic. “Hurry!”

Just a few more yards. Come on. Come on.

“Come on! Hurry!” screams Michael. He holds out his hand to you. You can see him about to yell something else. Oswald as well looks as if he’s about to run out to maybe grab you or something.

But their fighting position exploding puts a stop to them. You don’t even see what happened to them. All that happens is Oswald’s helmet flying near you, rolling into the snow, a few flecks of blood inside the liner. All you can do is stare at it. Oh no. No…

You feel hands on you. You look up. Bohater! She starts dragging you to a shell crater. “Bohater! I- I thought I told you to stay down!” you yell. She throws you in and dives down on top of you. She covers you with her body, almost in a hug. Snow and mud fly over your crater, and the explosions rock at your ear drums.

Yes, that's why I put the blatantly.
It's like the difference between Chekov's gun and 'oh hey there's a rifle over there' *danger appears* 'quick, use that rifle over there!'
>>
>>35291389
Hm... I'd agree with you normally, but in this case we're not going to be using Rose's perspective for very long, so I think expediting it is more acceptable.
>>

> Remain quiet.

You hug Bohater tight, shutting your eyes. There’s nothing to say honestly except thank you. She wouldn’t hear it anyway. Oh… Michael and Oswald. You barely knew them for five minutes. You can barely contain yourself.

Another explosion rocks the ground near you. You hear a tree splinter and explode, shattering from a burst. You try to say thank you, but you can barely hear yourself talk over the rumbling and rupturing of the earth. It’s as if God himself decided to bring the apocalypse down on your head.

And boy, did he choose a time to do it.

Another explosion. Snow and dirt fly all over you and Bohater.

And another one. You think your ears are beginning to shatter. You think you hear someone scream over the shells and the explosions.

Oh please. Let this end. Make it stop.

No.

No matter how much she entreats us, no matter how pitifully she laments, Rookie shall always die.

No, anon. Both Rookie and Rosemary are doomed in every possible timeline. The Witches of Certainty and Miracle declare it.
