Dinner is an... interesting affair, to say the least.

Mom brings up the dungeon immediately- She starts talking advice, what kind of traps, monsters, all sorts of things. Erics sits around with a jealous look on his face till Mom slugs him in the arm, at which point he starts helping with the advice.

Still green with envy though.

"-Really, the most important thing you can do in a dungeon is not panic. A lot of the traps are designed to herd you somewhere; either a location full of summoned monsters, or a bigger trap. Take it slow, watch everything."
He makes a sour face again.
"If it's wide enough, you can even walk on the walls. You'll bypass pretty much everything like that."
"It has been years, are you still sore about that?"
"I spent hours, days marking out that entranceway. Across the white stones, then follow the pattern, double back, repeat the pattern twice to unlock the door- And you just picked me up, strode across the ceiling and kicked the door down."
"It was efficient, yes."

The squabbling continues through dinner, both smiling as they nitpick minute flaws. They excuse themselves as soon as the food is finished, vanishing off to wherever it is they go.

Your siblings pile around, blankets appearing like snow as the suns last rays flicker over the trees. Sheszka snores gently next to you- she's already starting to fill out, muscles and flesh concealing her once protruding ribs. She's curled herself beneath your legs, pressing her body right against your abdomen.

You reach through the cage of your limbs, scratching at the wolf, watching her smile in her sleep.

Despite your nap, you can feel the night's pull on your conciousness, the dull ache of your exertions singing through your body. The buzz of excitement hasn't faded, though. A dungeon- An adventure. Your brain circles the topic as your eyes droop.
>>
>>35261630

You'll need- You'll need to get Jin. You promised. A yawn breaks your face. And Sheszka will probably follow you no matter what. And Sara... Hm. Maybe. Magic is one thing, but she gets scared, still.

You lay your head in a bundle of blankets, eyes closing, one set at a time. There'll be a lot to take care of tomorrow. It'd be best to start with:

>Fetching Jin. Maybe make a visit to the town out of it- Your sisters would probably like to go.
>Get some practice in with Mom. A few tips on fighting in enclosed spaces, maybe?
>Check in with Erics about making something hold magic for you. It'd be useful to have.

Probably a good idea to do this before heading out.

We'll practice with mom when we get back, and since it's a day's trip out and back, Jin can spend the night and we can recover from mom's training.

hell bring the whole family along, the general store owner would probably like to see who she has to give store credit to anyways. That and we can talk to them to see if they'd like to come with us to the dungeon. It could be a real family bonding moment down there.

Its better we train with Aria once she has her new armor. Then doing it before and having to put in anothe rtrainings session for that.

I still think that rather than (or maybe in addition to?) a device, we should practice just carrying some refined (by someone else) magic around for extended time periods. Sure, if we lose consciousness or focus it disperses. but the mental exercise is good for us and we could get some decent stuff out of it if we ration our power.

Also, earth power should help us detect traps.

talk to sisters, find out who wants to come.
Fetching jin should be the last prep we do since it requires first going to town

Speaking of. if our other fighter sister comes, she needs to get her own set of armor from town first.

Once we get into town, we should get Shez some leather armour. We want to keep our Wolfgirl safe.
>>
>>35262306
my only worry about that is how much it'll affect her mobility. Leather thick enough to be used as armor is rather stiff...

I think metal plated fore-arm and shin guards would be better.
Mithril chain shirt when we can finally afford one, too.

Field trip!
I would also ask the boys because they might actually get some nifty tools from the trader if they were interested.
>>
>>35262916
Since they get left out of all trips we take, they seem to not care much for that kind of thing. Maybe they prefer to just go hunting ?

>>
>>35262967
I worry about them a lot.
They're not very socially developed, they can barely read and write.
I don't want to feel embarrassed about our brothers, but they kind of are socially stunted.
>>
>>35263022
No you misunderstood, I pointed out how they never seem to be invited to any of these trips. Which is odd, really. So I assume there is a IC reason for that that just isn't spelled out because neither Lyra not Mom ever seem to make a effort in that direction.

>>35263064

>>
>>35263084
I think we haven't invited ANY of our siblings yet.
>>
>>35263108
>I think we haven't invited ANY of our siblings yet.
We invited Elle.
Inviting Aria is a given since she needs armor.
And we're already thinking of bringing Sara.
>>
>>35263141
hell just invite everyone, if they come they come, if not at least we can say we asked.
>>
Neither of your parents is back by the time you and your siblings start to stir.

Breakfast is the same easy meal of leftovers, everyone scarfing down food to start the day. As your siblings get ready for the day, you take matters into your own hands.

"Elle? Aria?"
Both look at you, then each other, then you again. Aria pipes up first.
"Yes?"
"I- Well, I promised Jin I would take her with me, yes? Whenever I go on an adventure. So I will be heading to Oakring- Do either of you want to come? To get your own set of armour, or to visit the trading post?"

Aria scratches idly at her face as she considers.
"I am not sure I want Mom to be training me any harder..."
Elle laughs, then turns to you.
"Give me a little bit, yes? I would like to bring a few things."

You nod, and Elle speeds off, burrowing into her piles of silk projects. Aria watches her with some interest, and turns back.
"...I'll go. Avoiding it won't make it any easier."
"No. No it won't."
You share a moment of sympathy with your sister in training before she claps you on the shoulder, heading off to get her own gear ready.

The boys have already gone, hurtling out of the tree to start the morning hunt. Sara has taken full advantage of your father's return, surrounding herself with his books.

Literally, she has a half-circle of books open around her, poring through each in turn to find what she needs. She looks back over her shoulder as you approach, raising a one-handed greeting with a smile.
"We're going to head into town, yes? Would you like to come with us?"
She turns back to the books, tilting her head to the side.
"Hmmmn. Not today, I think. I am very close, yes. Just a little more, and I think I will be casting this."
She gestures to a spiralling rune pattern in one of the books.
"Maybe next time, okay?"
>>
>>35263141
we've not actually invited and taken anyone to town yet.
>>
>>35263064
I think they are actually closer to what the "common" Arachne is like, the three sisters might be the unusual ones.

>>35263108
Mom did send specifically us with Aria and Elle to protect Sara on the trip to the Waterfall.
We thought of inviting Elle for the next time already when we came into town the first time.
I mainly wondered why it never seems to occur to Lyra to invite her brothers to these things, or mom for that matter.
>>
>>35263179
You nod, patting her head as you go.
"We will see you tonight, then. Or tomorrow. When we get back."
She grabs your hand as you turn, tugging you back to face her again.
"Take care, yes?"
"I will."

You meet your sisters at the base of the tree, wolf in tow. Aria has been piled high with Elle's work, looking slightly embarassed by the mountain of silk she's carrying. You take a bit of her burden, securing it with Elle's help as your parents walk up to the tree, both looking very- dishevelled.

"Going somewhere, dearhearts?"
"To the village, yes? I need to grab Jin, and they have not been yet."
Elle nods excitedly while your mother smiles.
"Be careful, yes?"
"Okaaaay." "Yes." "We will."

You depart your home at a brisk pace, keeping your stride even so that Elle can keep up.

So, I was thinking it was about time to put our meta-gaming capacity to use outfitting our dungeon raiding party. Owl harpys use their feet talons for dexterous work, so I figure we could try to arm Jin with some throwing weapons, like a shortened javelin. We could also make her 'dart' type weapons Roman Legionaries used (basically an arrow weighted with lead).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumbata
Even if Jin can't quite hurl them with her legs she can still dive bomb her targets or just drop them from really high up. We could also coat them with our venom to give them a little extra punch.

As for Sheszka, perhaps we could have a set of laminated leather armor. Hard enough to deflect glancing blows and arrows, but light enough not to slow her down any. Maybe layers of hardened and supple leather, using this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiled_leather on the exterior.

Godlike vision and super dexterous talons doesn't scream "javalin thrower" at me.
I would think a crossbow would be more up her alley. it multiplies strength a lot and is more of a precision weapon.

Also, that leather armor plan just doesn't sound very viable. Also, please remember her fur
I think this anon >>35262498 has the right of it.
its just hard to properly armor / arm a monster. we should look up info on what kind of equipment wolf warriors of old used to utilize, it would be a good starting point.
I am guessing a Cestus or brass knuckles for when she needs to deliver smashing damage (eventually enchanted)
And a magic knife when claws aren't enough slashing power.

with her high agility she would probably make an excellent fencer with a light sword. But we don't know anyone to teach her. while mom/lyra can probably teach her knifework (there is the species difference to consider).
>>
>>35263946
>And a magic knife when claws aren't enough slashing power.
Also when you don't want to be touching something that needs to be manipulated.

Mom recommended to always have a knife handy; something we should remind Aria about.
>>
>>35263946
>crossbow
She would have pretty big problems holding and firing a crossbow. A composite bow seems to more suited to he physiology.
>>
>>35263946
>I would think a crossbow would be more up her alley.
A crossbow? For a Harpy, to use with her feet?
You didn't think that through, did you.

For arming Jin, the best thing I can think of would be short javelins of some sort. She can't carry much on herself. We could carry a quiver of them on our back for her to use.
>>
>Lyra is level 68
>Not even a month old

Horee sheeit.

Mom is gunna be mad jelly here in a day or two.
>>
>>35264019
what? a bow is significantly more difficult to wield than a crossbow.

although in general either would be difficult to wield because she would have to do so while flying.
probably better for her to stick to melee combat.

... or magic actually. if she got some magic power

>>35264086
I did think it through, despite its difficulty it is amazingly more practical than a javalin.
A harpy simply cannot perform the motions to toss a javalin with its legs, and even if she could, can't exert the force needed, and even if she could, it isn't as effective a weapon as a crossbow
>>
>>35263946
I thought about crossbows, but it seems to complicated to operate and aim while flying. With javelins or other thrown projectiles Jin can use speed and gravity to hurl them with sufficient force.

As for the armor, I was thinking about her fur when I came up with that. Her coat grows on her limbs, not her torso, which houses her vital organs. Forearm and shin guards could be useful, and mithril would be great, but I don't think Michael would have any in stock. Layered leather is the lightest armor option available right now, and it's light enough for a werewolf to use.
>>
>>35264136
Technically level 168 if you include the first evo
>>
>>35263725

REQM confirms once again, that this is both a self-insert, and that he is a pretty good spidergirl.
>>
>>35264136
I aiming for hitting stage 3 of the spider tree before we hit puberty
>>
>>35264144
>a bow is significantly more difficult to wield than a crossbow
Not for the feet of a harpy, since she would have to hold it angled sideways in her feet, which works better with a bow. And a composite bow is also easier to reaload for her.
Its not "ideal" but definitly easier to use than a crossbow.

I want Jin to evolve into a thunderbird so bad
>>
>>35264158
>I thought about crossbows, but it seems to complicated to operate and aim while flying. With javelins or other thrown projectiles Jin can use speed and gravity to hurl them with sufficient force.
oh, you were talking about field fighting not dungeon crawling.
Yea, that would work. But in a dungeon she is not going to be able to TOSS a javalin from lyra's back.
really, not having hands is a ridiculous handicap
>>
>>35264144
She doesn't need force anon, she can let the momentum to the work for her. And if harpies are sufficiently dexterous to operate a crossbow while flying, they can certainly drop a pointy stick while flying.
>>
>>35264218
>She doesn't need force anon, she can let the momentum to the work for her.
not inside a dungeon, see >>35264198
>>
>people discussing what weapon jin should use during flight
OBVIOUSLY she should use tiny nets.
Nobody can resist tiny nets.
>>
>>35264198
hopefully her next evolution does something about the no-hands thing if we plan to do much dungeon-diving.
>>
>>35264144
>A harpy simply cannot perform the motions to toss a javalin with its legs,

I'm sure she could. Flying towards a target and releasing her weapon at high speed. Or just dropping the weapon from above.

I just can't imagine how you think a crossbow would work for a flying creature that manipulates things with her feet. It's unclear if her legs would even have the dexterity needed to use one.

When she's on the ground, her talons are occupied. She can't use the crossbow. when she's flying about, she's... Y'know, flying about. Cocking the string, placing the bold, holding the weapon steady to rest a bolt on the rung and aim.... All while airborn?
>>
>>35264158

It has just occurred to me that Lyra could probably use a horrible crossbreed of a crossbow and a ballista comfortably.

Y'know, if we go musclegirl route.

Taking Dragonslaying to a new level, firing ballista bolts fitted with heavy chains...while moving.
>>
>>35264198
Eh, I'm assuming if this dungeon is roomy enough for Jin to fly around in, she'll be able to fly fast enough to dive bomb monsters. If it isn't big enough for that, she likely won't be doing any fighting at all.
>>
>>35264258
we're big enough to have a back-mounted ballista, yes.
And we also have jin riding us all the time. Might as well give her heavy weaponry.
>>
>>35264198
>not having hands
She does have finger on her arms though, so she could probably use a crossbow from Lyras back.

>>
>>35264258
Getting a retardedly oversized arbalest would be perfectly practical for someone of our size and strength.
>>
>>35264218
>And if harpies are sufficiently dexterous to operate a crossbow while flying, they can certainly drop a pointy stick while flying.
if you just drop it and leg gravity handle it, it will have insignificant stopping power compared to a crossbow bolt.

>>35264195
>Not for the feet of a harpy, since she would have to hold it angled sideways in her feet, which works better with a bow.
a bow ALWAYS requires 2 hands, it is impossible to use a bow 1 handed.
a light crossbow can be wielded in one hand
make it a repeater crossbow too.

to reload it she sits on her ass and uses both legs to reload. to wield it she stands on one leg, while using the other to point and shoot like a pistol.

to wield a bow she has to sit down on a chair or lie on her back and then use both legs to hold and pull, and handling the arrows is gonna be a pain too.
>>
>>35264265
Can you imagine the sort of weaponry we could equip on Seranthis' back?
>>
>>35264244
that is actually a very practical thing for her to do. drop a net on something to entangle it up. But it again requires she has enough space to fly.

>>35264251
see >>35264198
>>
>>35264308
>a bow ALWAYS requires 2 hands
But she has 2 feet, and firing a crossbow angled sideways makes for horrible accuracy.
>>
>>35264323

>>
>>35264251
>I just can't imagine how you think a crossbow would work for a flying creature that manipulates things with her feet. It's unclear if her legs would even have the dexterity needed to use one.
1. we were explicitly told her feet are extremely dexterous
2. I said a crossbow would be more practical than bows and javalins, not that it is the best weapon for her (best is melee)
>>
>>35264308
Just look at your own picture, and try to imagine for a moment how someone with the claws on her feet is supposed to operate that. Both in tersm of pulling the trigger, and in loading the weapon without snapping the string with her sharp claws. The string on a crossbow is too small for Jin to be able to draw without snapping it.
>>
>>35264291
Who is to say that we cant go that route?

I mean we have a RNG loot table for us already. All we need is a smith that is good enough to craft with whatever materials we bring him.
>>
>>35264368
Fuck man, we wouldn't even have to fight battles with something like that. Any sentient army would piss all over themselves when they see something like that coming at them.
>>
>>35264264
last time we went underground she couldn't fly at all, she sat on our back the whole time. and even if she had some room to fly, she would not be able to pick up speed and divebomb things. there is no way this would be possible inside a dungeon.

>>35264289
she does? ok, that solves all the problems. along with >>35264265
>>
>>35264388
>crossbow would be more practical than bows
But it wouldn't be, it would be way easier for her to use a bow, since a bow has far more space for her to grip, making up for her problems gripping things even with her legs, you might remember how she talked about that in the inn.
She can use a crossbow while on lyras back, with her finger, but in flight a bow would be a lot better.

>>
>>35264403
she won't be angling it sideways, she will be using one foot to point straight forward.
and you never ever touch the string of a crossbow. It is loaded with a lever
and my post explicitly said to modify it into a repeater crossbow.
And we were told she has extremely dexterous feet so don't give me that "claws for feet" thing. this isn't a bird its a harpy

>>35264472

Maybe get her some spear that has something to grip for her at the end ?
>>
The big question is how much will a ballista/gattling gun/cannon/flamethrower slow us down.
>>
>>35264356
>But she has 2 feet
and using one to stand and one to shoot is more practical than lying on her back while using both to shoot.
and there is no sideways angling. stand up, now lift one of your feet while pointing it straight ahead. there is no sideways angling involved

But are they as "I'M A GIANT GOD DAMN SPIDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRR" as this mother fucker?
>>
>>35264308
a couple pounds of javelin dropped in a dive will have significantly more kinetic energy than a crossbow bolt because of its far greater mass.
>>
>>35264485
It would still be all but impossible to aim while flying. Humans aim crossbows by lining up the sights in front of their eyes, which is an impossibility for a flying harpy. She might be able to shoot ok while sitting down on her favorite spiderperch, but that would be it.
>>
>>35264509
>and using one to stand and one to shoot is more practical than lying on her back while using both to shoot
I thought we were still at something she can use while flying.
>>35264509
>>35264485
How would she draw the trigger like that ?
More importantly, you expect her to stand on one foot while firing ?

>And we were told she has extremely dexterous feet so don't give me that "claws for feet" thing
Her feet explicitly end in claws. No matter how dexterous those might be, they are still sharp.

And don't come with that "you have never" crap, the string of a crossbow can still be cut by something sharp.
>>
>>35264581
I think you aren't reading the parts where he mentions crossbows are loaded with a lever, not by hand.
>>
Ok everyone, how about this, we make Jin a couple javelins/weighted arrows for use in the open, and lend her Elle's crossbow for the dungeon. We can see how well she handles both weapons, and if she takes a shine to the crossbow we can build one for her.
>>
>>35264602
We would need to make a pretty large crossbow so that she wouldn't come into contact with the string while trying to draw the lever.
>>
>>35264602
If she isn't dexterous enough with her feet to hold cutlery, she most certainly can't draw the lever on any crossbow small enough for her to reliably hold in one foot.
>>
The path is easy, especially in the daylight. Through the forest, the ruins, to the road and on. Simple.

Well, simple for you, anyway.

The scene you come across would be hilarious if it wasn't so clearly fatal for the people involved.

It's a perfect tableau, straight from a movie. A half collapsed carriage lies in the ruined road. A pair of dead horses before it, blood spattered across the stones. A chubby merchant, family in tow, has climbed higher onto the cart, lashing out with kicks to keep away the wolves snapping at his heels. His wife and son sit high on the canopy covering the cart, screaming and wailing while the man lets loose with a string of ridiculous curses.

You stand watching for a moment. Why in gods name would someone try to enter a forest ruled by monsters without so much as a guard? There's idiocy, then there's whatever this moron has that passes for brains.

You look at Aria and shrug, moving forward into the pack of wolves- You pick up the largest, lifting it by it's neck and hurl it into a nearby tree, the resounding snap of bone punctuating the sudden silence.

The wolves take one look at you, then at the snarling Sheszka- and bolt, flying through the trees as fast as their legs can carry them. For his part, the merchant continues to prove himself a god amongst fools, now directing his kicks in your direction, howling all the while.

"Thrice-cursed! Hellbeast! Let none but the Gods judge me, I will lay you low, and the wrath of a thousand thousand will fall upon your head, like rain upon countryside, and you will be washed away by the fury! You will-"
>>
>>35264581
>I thought we were still at something she can use while flying.
the crossbow explicitly refers to something she can fire in a dungeon where she can't fly
either from lyra's back, or standing in the back while the frontline fighters do their thing.

>More importantly, you expect her to stand on one foot while firing ?
How do you expect her to stand on ZERO feet while firing?
>>
>>35264602
>crossbows are loaded with a lever

Correction. Some types of crossbow can be cocked with a lever attachment.

Even if we could get on of those. If would add a separate tool to the job and increase the awkwardness of the whole job.

How the hell is Jin to brace the crossbow in one talon while fitting and drawing a lever with the other?

Lie down for 5 minutes in the middle of a battle to free up both feet?
>>
>>35264668

Elle stands off to the side, keeping Aria between herself and the screaming fat man.
"Lyra, what is wrong with him?"
Aria shrugs. You gesture, while the man's face grows ever redder.
"He is an idiot, yes."

She observes him a moment longer.
"Yes, but what is he doing?"
"Trying his utmost to die in the forest, I think."
Aria chokes a bit, biting back laughter as the rotund organic megaphone finally quiets.

"So, beasts! You speak the true tongue!"
"This is plainspeak, not spider-tongue. It is not even the forest language."
Elle has joined her sister in laughter, trying her hardest to restrain herself while you mock the man. His family still sits astride the cart, watching quietly.
"The tongue of man! The one true ruler of all!"
"I think our Queen was a spider, actually."
"All would bow before us!"
"No, I think getting that low would be a bit hard, really."

Aria is wheezing for breath as the man watches you.
"Are you mocking me?"
"Yes. What are you doing in the woods? This is our land, yes? And without guards. There is nothing but monsters for leagues."
"There are riches in these woods, beyond your wildest imagination. Silks and powders the likes of which you have never seen!"

You simply stare at him, transfixed.
It shouldn't be possible to be this dumb. This can't be real.
"You.... Do you understand that everything you are talking about is made by monsters?"
"What?"
"The arachne make the silk. The moths make the powders. And anything else would belong to us, anyway. What, in all the gods names, are you doing in the woods?"
>>
>>35264670
I already made it clear the bow was a idea for something to use while flying. I agree with using a crossbow while on the spider perch, assuming she can actually hold a crossbow like that.
>>
>>35264537
you are underestimating the force with which a bolt is launched. and even if true kinetic energy =! stopping power.
lacking penetration it causes significantly less damage, especially to anything armored. like every monster worth hunting
>>
>>35264685
Let's make him some silk to demonstrate.

this man, he must be a saint for there is no other answer for someone to be put on this world to give others such amusement

He is clearly one of those remnants of the human-supremacy church. I don't think we have reason to do anything but send him out of the forest as fast as possible.
>>
>>35264685
Still hanging from the side of his cart, he blinks rapidly, trying to sort out his thoughts.
"I- uh, I-"
He gets a second wind as you watch, chest inflating with misplaced pride.
"I hail from the greatest of cities, monster. I am a merchant of impeccable renown. Why should I grovel for goods in some godsforsaken hick town at the edge of nowhere?"

You gesture to his shattered cart, his massacred horses.
"Because the alternative is to die in the woods, yes?"
He sneers, lips curling as he prepares a retort.
Luckily enough, his wife interrupts him.

"I beg pardon, weaver. His intentions are good, if his plan is not."
You give her a flat look as her son clings to her. Her husband starts to ramp up into something, and she shrugs, speaking over him.
"Would you be so forgiving as to assist us back to town? I am afraid we would not survive the trip."
You sigh, rubbing at your temples.

bigger town is a good thing, and it's weird how you only brought up this argument and flipped sides AFTER a fat merchant was introduced.

That's also because no Arachne has been to the town in his generation.
We're the first to come through since Mom came through, and that was years ago, implied to be more than 18 years.

If more Arachne trade and interaction with monsterkin happens, and everyone in the town has a small but steady supply of monster-produced goods, then it won't be as big a problem as you're making it out to be.

No it doesn't. The humans came into the region, tried to subdue the monsters, got their shit slapped. Afterwards the monsters let it be, the supremacy church spent some time fostering the racial hatred because no one did anything about it, and the crusade started later as revenge for the shit slapping earlier. So yes, leaving humans to allow them their delusions and trading with them will not bring about monster/human utopia.
>>
>>35265405
>talking out your ass to win an argument
>>
>>35265503
So what you are saying is that monster/human trade would explicitly prevent all of these problems, and you agree 100% with the human/monster trade utopia path?
You are also saying we should be helping the humans out to give them good impressions?
Because that is what the evidence you are citing suggests.
>>
>>35265536
>So what you are saying is that monster/human trade would explicitly prevent all of these problems
Yes.
>You are also saying we should be helping the humans out to give them good impressions?
No. Because the humans of that empire had been living close to monster for centuries, and it didn't prevent the supremacy schurch at all, a lot of good impressions were made in that time, and it obviously didn't help.

Trading with others is a great and wonderful thing. But letting them settle near you without any restrcitions leads to shit.

>>
>>35265565
The good news is that most of those cannon rounds will be going over your head.
>>
>>35265536
Actually, monster/human trade would help things, as the supremacy church banned trade with people not belonging to their empire in order to isolate their people from monsters.
>>
>>35265558
Actually, building a big bustling human city off of helpful monster/human trade would probably lead to a great many wonderful things for both parties involved.

As opposed to, you know, forming isolationist empires and ignoring the other to such a degree they can start ENTIRE CHURCHES dedicated to misinforming about us.

How would helping one human that is explicitly a asshole foster better human/monster relationships ? We already have those, that town is perfectly ok with us. This guy isn't going to go back to us racist friends and tell him about the great arachne who are wonderful beings that deserve respect and admiration, just because we played pack mule for his shit.

>As opposed to, you know, forming isolationist empires and ignoring the other to such a degree they can start ENTIRE CHURCHES dedicated to misinforming about us.

They were isolationist enough that nobody knew about monsters very well, and everyone was entirely misinformed on how monsters were.

That doesn't sound like they had any actual contact. Almost as if they were two incredibly isolationist empires on the verge of war or something. Funny that.
>>
>>35265597

Or, y'know, we could build a big city based off of monster/human trade until some outsiders came in, took over said city, and thought a better alternative was to force us to make the goods we traded before.

We don't NEED to trade with them, at all, we are entirely self-sufficient, they will come to rely on us for their wealth and will acknowledge this FACT and more than likely find themselves completely HATING the idea and take ALTERNATE routes.

This is a COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE concern.

Then the foreign empire moved in and took over. Imposed restrictions on trade and contact. The HFY Church then spent generations poisoning minds against us.
>>
>>35265803

Maybe THAT is the STYLE he was GOING for?

Lot's of people do that kinda shit, fuck, I do it subconsciously on here when trying to put extra emphasis on it, it's very difficult to perform a very common action and yet somehow still have enough of a "unique" spin to it for it to be noticeable.

I mean, I don't agree with that guy on some points, but the same basic idea I can-sorta-maybe agree with, and that idea is CAUTION when dealing with outside influences on our home-turf and not upsetting the balance of said turf through unnecessary and not-entirely beneficial growth.

That dude's main concern, or at least what I managed to pick up, was the concern of rampant idiocy infesting the town too fast for it to be vetted out, and the following results of said idiocy ruining everything for everyone.

Idiocy is the only real infinite resource after all.

You advance on the carriage with a sigh, circling it to check the damage.

It's not as bad as it looks- The front wheel snapped, and the seat is pretty much gone, but you could probably hoist it like a two-wheeled cart and carry it back to town.

Aria and Elle have drawn closer, your smaller sister moving towards the canopy.
"Do you need help down?"
The woman nods affirmative, handing your sibling her son, and shimmying down the side. Her husband releases his death grip on the cloth, and slides off bouncing off the forest floor with a grunt.

Slinging your glaive over your spider-half, you deftly slice away the remains of the horse's reins. Taking hold of the wooden bits the reins had held, you hoist the carriage with ease, kicking the remains of the damaged wheels free.

You watch the family; the scared child, the apprehensive wife. The angry father.
"It is not so bad, yes. I can carry it back to town."
The lady releases her breath, an honest sigh of relief.
"But-"
All three look to you.

"It is a bit heavy, yes? Someone will have to walk."
The woman's lips curl in a smirk, and she turns to her husband. He twists towards her.
"You can't mean-"
"I am feeling ever so faint, Xander. And you would never force your son to walk in these woods, of course."
"Of course not!"
"Then it will have to be this way."

She wipes away false tears as she clambers into the wagon behind you, child in tow, and the man nods, chins wobbling as he acquiesces. A simple tug starts the wagon rolling, your sisters on one side, and a wheezing, overweight merchant on the other. The trip is anything but silent- and his wife spends most of it with her head buried in her hands.

"-it would be a most simple matter to settle trade between-"
"You are not listening. You will not be allowed into our territory in the forest- and more to the point, you would die attempting to reach it. If you wish to trade, work through the village."
"It would be a simple matter to set a trading post further in- There was even a road here once, it could be restored-"
"We do not allow people into the ruins! Noone!"

His wife groans. He continues, unrepentant, taking huge gulps of air as he tries to speak and walk at the same time.
"If they are not interested in trade, we could make arrangements- people would be willing to handle it. For a fee, of course."
"We trade with Oakring- Which is in the harpies territory. Where they have given the village permission to settle. We would drive out anyone trying to settle in our territory."
"The forest is very large."
"The forest is very full of monsters. And very, very few of them are friendly. And the closer to their homes you get, the less friendly they become, yes."
"We could just-"
"This is not up for discussion. Stay out of the woods. You will not be saved a second time."

"We could bring in soldiers-"
His wife, having finally had enough, chimes in.
"You would have a war. The monster-kin will not allow an army into their woods- and more importantly, none of the lords would risk it again. People have not forgotten, Xander. Nobody wants to see history repeated."

He falls silent in the wake of her declaration- relatively silent.
He breathes louder than the cart creaks.

"Lyra. This is Elle, and that is Aria, yes."
"Thank you. I would rather have disliked to die."
"Hmm. Did the guards not warn against coming into the woods?"

"We tried to hire adventurers, but there were none willing to travel into the woods- not into the spider territory, anyway."
You raise an eyebrow.
"Then, why-?"
"We thought, if there was a road, then perhaps it was kept."
"Not for a long, long time, yes. The harpies do not watch so far from the village. What are your names?"

"I am Yari, He is Xander. And the little one is also Xander."
"A strong name." He manages to wheeze out with pride.

You watch him, red in the face, legs churning to keep up with your, well. You're not even walking, at this point.
You can see the gate approaching, finally.
Anything to be free of this.

>The replenishment of air is unnecessary in well-oxygenated water, because the bell permits gas exchange with the surrounding water; there is net diffusion of oxygen into the bell and net diffusion of carbon dioxide out.[6] This process is driven by differences in partial pressure. The production of carbon dioxide and use of oxygen by the spider maintains the concentration gradient, required for diffusion. This system has been referred to as "the water spider's aqua-lung of air bubbles", though an aqua-lung lacks gas exchange with the surroundings;[7] this system is more properly referred to as a form of physical gill.

You drag the cart the last little bit, pulling up alongside the fence.

The older adventurer is back, staring, open-mouthed as you haul the carriage before the entrance, while the old man is desperately sucking in air, frantically trying to keep breathing around his laughter.

"I'm not going to lie to you, girl. Of all the jobs you could possible get, draft horse would probably pay the least."
You give him a glare while you lower the remains of the cart to the ground, and the woman brings her son out into the sunlight. Xander himself is leaning heavily on the side of his cart, sounding for all the world like a beached whale.

"No, No-" The old man can barely contain himself. "Armour that fine, she could only be a warhorse!"
He dissolves into cackling again, while Elle looks between you, before leaning in.
"I think he might not know what spiders look like. Or horses."
This, of course, does nothing to stop his laughter.

The adventurer is up now, patrolling around the shattered carriage with a frown across his face.
"Bloody, godsdamned- You snuck out?!"
He advances on the merchant one hand wringing through his hair. He glances to you, worry written on his face.
"Tell me he didn't reach the ruins. Please."
"We found him on the road, yes. Wolves had torn apart the carriage."
>>
>>35268416
He breathes a heavy sigh of relief.
"Small mercies, then."
He turns back to the merchant.
"This isn't some sort of bloody game! When we said 'stay out of the forest', we meant 'stay the bloody hell out of the forest'! If you'd broken the bloody compact-"
He shakes his head, fiercely.

"We have border. We have peace. We are allowed, Allowed. To stay here. You enter, you leave, only from the other side of town. And If I see you anywhere near the godsdamned forest-"
Yari speaks up, her soft voice interrupting.
"Captain, please. We have spoken with the arachne. We know we are not allowed into the woods. We will repair the carriage, and we will leave."
He stands tall a moment, facing the lady down. He grunts.

"Fine. See that you do."

The moths can't produce silk of comparable strength- it takes a lot of layers to make their homes.
>>
>>35268512

This exact kind of faggotry I mean.
We called a giant spider army on the last guy going into the ruins. Its a huge deal for the people of the forest.
>>
>>35268579
that guy was a NECROMANCER.
There's a huge difference between a necromancer raising armies and a bumbling merchant stepping on the "do not tresspass" sign.

One gets an army, the other gets a smack on the head and a yelling at.
>>
So, if it's not to late to get back to discussing weapons...
What if we whipped up one of those huge fuckoff crossbows, like a Roman scorpion. We could have Jin operate when perched on our magnificent spiderbutt and she could use the bolts as javelins when she flies.
>>
>>35268543

It's a HUGE GOD DAMN DEAL.

>>
>>35268543
>Every so often people accidentally break compacts.
He was told not to do it, and if you let people get away with breaking agreements without consequences, they stop meaning anything.
>>
>>35268618
It's not really that huge of a deal.
There'll always be doofuses who wander out. If your entire compact falls apart because a drunkard stumbled in the ruins, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did.
>>
>>35268647
That's a stretch and a half.
>>
>>35268652
The compact doesn't fall apart from that no, he still needs to be punished to ensure people keep following it. If you keep giving inches of "ah not so bad" the pact becomes meaningless.
>>
>>35268683
But it aint so bad.
Yell at him and toss him back in the human village.
That's about enough.
>>
>>35268652

>I'm just going to scavenge the ruins of your people's ancient civilization.
>It's no big deal, I mean, I'm just doing it for profit, you guys don't mind right?

The compact would NOT fall apart because some fucker decided to dick around in the ruins and got murdered because of it, the ruins are NO WHERE NEAR CLOSE ENOUGH for this shit to happen on accident.

Why would the compact fall apart if people say "Don't go there and dick around or you will fucking die" and people go there and dick around and fucking die as a result?
>>
>>35268705
