So! Let's see, news.

AWA was fun, good to see everybody- got to torment planefag a bit, though not as much as I'd planned. oh well. maybe next year, hahaha. The panel I went to wasn't bad, but could have stood having a lot more work done by the presenters, but I guess it is what it is.

Archives here:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

Past that, it's good to be back. It's a short road trip, but 74 is a rat bastard. Fucking, who thought it was a good idea to drop the speed limit on a 4 lane divided highway to 35 randomly?

++

Joe was complaining about bruises, again.

To be fair, you're pretty sure he had no idea what he was getting himself into when he got involved with you two.

To be fair, none of you really expected it to have been more than a fling, over as soon as you'd left from California. But then you'd found yourselves talking seriously about the consort program, and getting Joe aboard- and dealing with Frank when he'd found out.

Frank had reacted better than you'd hoped; you'd expected those rocket tubes to be loaded.

You're the first up- Claire has never enjoyed mornings, and Joe usually sleeps late. There's honestly not much for him to do here, other than the homework Claire keeps assigning him in math. You're pretty sure she's going somewhat overboard with it, but it's hard to blame her, neither of you want to see him fail out, and Frank's pointed out Annapolis isn't the easiest thing on earth to handle.

A creeping doubt in the back of your mind says it'll be a lot harder for Joe if matron Longstreet finds out. She's got a lot of clout there, even if she doesn't have direct authority over anything other than the witches.

You let the thought pass, knowing it's not going to do anyone much good to worry about it, and grab your leg from the floor.

1/2
>>
You've always worn a cheetah leg since the accident, even if the navy hasn't always been the happiest with the decision. Ice, thankfully, doesn't seem to care about it, saying as long as it doesn't impede your ability to fly, she doesn't care what you wear.

You'd asked her at the time if that meant you could fly without wearing anything; she declined to comment.

The weather today is bad enough everything's socked in- a massive series of brutal storms hammering the entire region. Extremely unusual, the Polish pilots have said, but not entirely unheard of. Either way, it's bad enough that no one wants to be flying in the mess.

Hell, you'd rather not go outside in it, to be honest. You'll have to, you know, even a day like today with no flying, there's still work to be done, but you'd be a lot happier just staying in bed and taking it easy.

Well, 'easy'. Joe might complain more about bruises and the structural integrity of certain joints.

You get dressed in a flight suit either way- yours are tailored to allow you to get in and out of them easier, with one leg cut right about where your prosthetic begins. Technically, as a witch, you could go bareleg all over the place, like the rest of them, but you're more beholden to the example Frank sets- you're a pilot first, a witch second.

Well, ok, he's not a witch, but you feel a kind of camaraderie with him that kind of obligates you to wear a flight suit. Besides, it's kinda chilly in here.

Downstairs, Wendy's already up, boiling the water for morning tea. She's not got anything on the stove yet, and you kinda feel like cooking breakfast, even if not everyone appreciates your omelettes.

“Good morning, Leftenant Styles.” Wendy says, having heard you coming in. “Morning tea? I hadn't started on breakfast yet, I'm sorry. If you want to have a seat, I'll cook something for you.”

[] Don't worry about it Wendy, I'll cook breakfast.

Hey Ghost, what's the status of Central America? I'm gonna have some free time over Christmas and I wanna run a oneshot.
>>
[x] That sounds good, now that you've offered.

Your paranoia about Frank- he works too hard to 'protect' girls like Wendy- wars breifly with your laziness.

Laziness wins handily.

“That sounds good, Wendy, thanks.” You say, taking a seat at the table.

She nods, putting a cup of tea in front of you a moment later, along with the morning newspaper. “How would you like your eggs?”

You bite back a lewd joke- the last couple ones you've used on her have gone right over her pretty little head. Totally wasted effort- you'd rather try and make Frank or Slider squirm.

Getting Slider flustered would be like finding the holy grail- usually she just greets your attempts with a blank stare and utter silence. You've gotten Tabitha once, and only once, but you had found one of those cheap romance novels she reads, so you'd had something to work with. By now, she's probably not bothered by it anymore. Mav's hit or miss, and you don't dare try Merlin or Goose.

Katya... well, you're not sure she can be bothered the same way. You're reasonably sure if Frank ever found his libido and proposed they did it on the table right there during dinner, she'd take him up on the offer.

You're pretty sure you could charge admission and make some money if they ever did do that.

You're about to open the paper to the comics when Slider... stalks down the stairs. Honestly, it's the only way to describe the movement- fluid, predatory, and powerful. You wish you moved like that.

1/2
>>
Of course, you also wish you had hips like that. Damn, the things you could do with those.

“Aly.” She says, taking a seat and pulling the morning paper over, while taking your tea from in front of you and taking a sip. “Sleep well?”

You nod, getting up to make a cup of coffee. You're glad Frank's sister isn't around- last time you'd made coffee with her in the building, you got all of none. Wasted effort.

“Good. Frank's been bothering us about getting a hack. Tabby has work for him today, guess what that means?”

So, something I thought of.

Wroclaw should probably still be Breslau in SW89, and "East Poland" is probably what NATO calls the third of Poland that the Soviets grabbed in '39. There is no actual nation of East Poland, just areas annexed to the Lithuanian, Byelorussian and Ukrainian SSRs.

It's a little late to finally figure out how the IRL borders in Europe make no sense in the context of WW2 being frozen in 1941. But you're right, probably Wroclaw should be Breslau andthe capital of the German province of Schliesen.

The big reason I'm interested is that 1989 is the peak of the Salvadorean Civil War, with fighting between rebel forces and the military in the suburbs of the capitol. It's the final FMLN offensive, and the biggest by far.

[x] You two are gonna go finally find a secluded spot in a boneyard?

“You two are finally gonna go find a secluded spot in a boneyard?” You ask. Wendy visibly reacts- freezing for a second- while Slider acts like she didn't even hear it, then sighs.

“First,” She corrects. “No, I don't want to have to worry about tetanus. Second, what makes you think it'd just be two of us, and third, if we did, at least the whole house wouldn't hear the screaming.”

“We're not that loud.” You respond.

In response, she simply sets a tape recorder down on the table without looking at it, her finger hovering over the 'play' button.

You cut off when Joe's name rings across the tape loud and clear. Slider hits stop and looks over at you.

“I, uh.” You say, looking over at Wendy, who is very interested in whatever she's cooking.

“Mmm?” Slider says, smiling slightly. “You were saying something?”

[x] Insinuate she'll be just as loud when one of them finally gets Frank

“I was saying I wonder how loud you'll be when You finally land Frank.” You say, sitting back down with your coffee.

Slider grins. “They'll sings songs of that for ages.” She says, simply. “But I'm not going to wake the house up, either.”

“It's one or the other. You gonna dead fish?” You say, then grin. “Or rubber snake?”

“Ha-ha.” She responds, drily. “How long have you been sitting on that one?”

“Long enough, thank you.” You reply.

Slider's retort is lost when Frank walks in, greeting the three of you. He gets a glass of juice- finishing it off, the cunt- then sits down next to Slider, who almost imperceptibly shifts towards him.

Almost. You caught it, and file it away for further ammunition.

“So what's on tap for the day?” He asks.

“Tabby wants to see you after you get chow. She's over at her office.” Slider says, then jerks a thumb at you. “And Aly's going with Wendy to Poznan to see about a hack or something, we need one, and there's a boneyard out that way.”

“Lucky.” Frank says, looking at you with undisguised envy.

“I know.” You say. “It's not everyday one of us gets Wendy all to themselves.”

Wendy, setting down the breakfast plates, turns beet red.

[x] Any requests while we're there?

“So, any requests for us while we're there?” You ask.

Frank shrugs. “Whatever you can find. Multi engine would be nice.”

“Two plus?” You ask, and he nods.

“Yeah, that'd be nice. Liaison aircraft or something maybe, just whatever.”

You nod. “Can do.”

You change into a pair of nondescript BDUs, while Wendy changes into a set of British DPM fatigues with no insignia on them- that kind of bothers you for a second, your own BDUs aren't sterile like that. Then again, you know her history well enough by now to know why- she probably wasn't really ever allowed to wear unit insignia. She doesn't seem to register it, but to you that's kind of a big deal- not having one means you don't belong.

It bothers you enough that you make a note to yourself to talk to Ice about it- Wendy landing with the unit was pretty informal, and while the same can be said of you and Rosalie, you feel like Wendy maybe needs something more formal for herself, to feel like she belongs.

AANNNDD we've been answered.
>>
The two of you sign out a humvee from the motor pool- You'd take a train, but the lines recently have been crammed full of big logistics trains, and those aren't comfortable at all for any length of time.

The drive to Poznan takes a couple hours- the weather's no better this way than out east, but eventually you find one of the aircraft depots. This one's run by the USAF, and it's a regional maintenance and regeneration base- handling almost everything from the US inventory in theater, alongside a Polish unit doing the same work. The Luftwaffe and French ADA tend to send their aircraft further west, with the worst cases usually just stripped at their base and left there as hulks.

You check in with the base security, who give you permission to check the local boneyard, though they warn you there's not a lot there, really, having been picked over multiple times. If you can find anything airworthy, they'll help you move it, but the guy you talk to warns you that they've had a few crashes, and if their chief maintenance test pilot doesn't clear it, you're not leaving with it, witch or no.

There's four rows of aircraft here, mostly small stuff, though you clearly see one battered C-130 in there too.

Wendy looks over at you, tapping a flashlight on the heel of her boot. “Where should we start?”

[] Let's check the row over there, that F-111 looks ok from here
[] That first row. That twinprop looks like it might still be airworthy

Whu-
>The Raven served in the Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. On 17 January 1991, a USAF EF-111 crew of Captain James Denton and Captain Brent Brandon achieved an unofficial kill against an Iraqi Dassault Mirage F1, which they managed to maneuver into the ground, making it the only member of the F-111/FB-111/EF-111 family to achieve an aerial victory over another aircraft.
Holeee Sheeet.
>>
>>35230106
Weight and other issues, they also wanted a dogfighter.
>>
>>35230075

The Australians loved it. It and the Mirage, or later it and the F/A-18 covered all the bases. F-111 had long range, excellent avionics, could carry just about everything.

>>35230106
Obselete design, basically. Or at least for the American air forces. It was designed with an older paradigm in mind. Eyes down, missile boat stuff, you know? Vietnam showed that that was a bloody stupid idea. It was a strike aircraft for nukes, anti-ship stuff, etc, but they had other aircraft in the pipe that could do that, and more, better.

It was basically an aircraft without a niche, and too many complicating factors. Alright for the Aussies, who didn't really have any bombers or dedicated ground attack aircraft to speak of, and they didn't want to run a variety of aircraft for logistics reasons, but for the Americans it was the white elephant they needed to move.

It almost got dropped by USAF after it trialed poorly in Vietnam. The terrain following radar was apparently such a piece of shit it was putting crews in greater danger, and that mitigated a good chunk of the original appeal of the F-111: a fast mover that could get low, stay fast, and be flown entirely from instrumentation in adverse, low-light/night conditions.

[x] That first row. That twinprop looks like it might still be airworthy

You stick the humvee in park and look through the driving rain, trying to find something. Finally, your eyes come across what looks like a utility prop plane, parked next to a hulked mirage.

“Hey, Wendy.” You say, pointing. “That first row, that twinprop looks like it might still be airtworthy.”

She looks at it, frowning, but then nods. “It may be. I can't see any damage from here. Shall we go take a look?”

You nod, reaching around behind you to pull two ponchos up, and handing one to Wendy.

You struggle to get into them in the confines of the vehicle, then step out into the rain, turning so it's not driving straight into your eyes. It's not the worst you've ever been in, but it's right up there.

The ground squelches under Wendy and your boots, and you wish you'd had another prosthetic available- the cheetah foot isn't exactly optimal for conditions like this.

Wendy flicks on her flashlight and steps in the open side hatch of the aircraft while you look around outside. It doesn't look too bad- honestly, you wonder why it's here instead of somewhere on the base's flight line. There's some cannon damage to the fuselage, but nothing critical it looks like- you think it could be patched, so long as you never tried to pressurize it, you'd be ok.

Both turboprops look to be in good shape, though the rightside one shows some evidence of a leak, with fluid stains around the mount.

Climbing inside, you note that the hold has been totally gutted, with nothing attached to the deck at all. “How's it look up front?” You ask, climbing forward and taking a seat after throwing your poncho over the side of the copilot's chair.

Wendy shakes her head. “I'm not sure, Leftenant.” She says. “I'm not as familiar with aircraft as you.”

You nod, having figured as much. You search around the cockpit, looking for the switches you'll need, and finding them after a while. Crossing your fingers, you flip the battery power on- and get nothing.

“Well, no shock there.” You mutter, looking to see if there's any visible damage to any of the cockpit's internal spaces, and being gratified to see none.

“Well, Wendy, there's no power, probably no batteries.” You say. “So we can't get an idea of what kind of shape this bird's in.”

“We can go ask the maintenance people for one.” She points out. “And drive it back here. Or we could keep looking.”

The sun set; the dusk fell on the stream, and the lights began to appear along the shore. The Chapman lighthouse, a three-legged thing erect on a mudflat, stood turgidly. Lights of ships moved in the fairway - a great stir of lights going up and going down. And further west on the upper reaches the red-lit town was still marked dimly against the damp, red-orange sky, a gauzy fog hiding the sunset, a misty glow under the stars.
"And this also," said Tabitha suddenly "has been one of the places we were... uh... together."

Can't do Noir because I don't have a good Noir-esque plot in my head.
Can't do Tolstoy because I don't think I could do it justice.
I might be able to do some shitty Conrad-esque shit, if I just read more into Heart of Darkness.

HoD only has two named characters, so it'll be more into a 10-years-later introspective from Ice's point of view. But only really able to do that once the entire quest is over. Frankly, I think Ghost already did it for some of the more momentous events for SW89.

[x] Let's keep looking, we can come back if we don't find anything.

“Let's keep looking, then.” You say, standing back up and walking into the rear of the aircraft to put your poncho back on. Wendy follows right behind you. “We can always come back to this one if we don't find anything.”

She nods, throwing her own poncho on and stepping back out into the storm.

The rest of the aircraft are in pretty bad shape- even a lot of the light turboprop planes show evidence of catastrophic damage and cannibalization.

Tucked along the back are a trio of camoflague painted aircraft- one you've only seen a few times before.

“What are those?” Wendy asks, closing up to one. “Three seats?”

You nod. “Late model bats. P-67Ds, probably.” You say. “They built them in Saint Louis, my grandpop worked on the production lines before the family moved.”

“Bats?” Wendy asks.

You nod again. “Ask Frank about them, he'd probably know more. There weren't that many, though.”

1/2
>>
Wendy nods, climbing up the slick side of one and slipping, falling to all fours and dropping her Flashlight.

“Careful!” You admonish. “You ok?”

She stands up a little hesitantly, then nods. “I'm fine. Canopy is sealed, I can't really see inside.” She says, quietly. “I wonder how they ended up here?”

You shrug again. “Grandpop worked for McDonnell in the early part of the fifties, dad said. So that's probably around when these were built. The late model ones like this were some of the fastest twin engine piston planes ever made.”

“Would it work for us?” Wendy asks. “Oh! I believe I found the canopy release. Here-”

She pulls the canopy open, sliding the front hood back along the rails and slipping into the seat. “It looks good here.”

You slowly walk around the aircraft, looking for damage. There's some along the wings, but nothing a good maintenance shop can't handle.

Wendy peers down from the cockpit and shakes her head. “No power here either.”

[x] Well, let's go get a cart and try it out. With three of these we can probably get at least one in the air.

You shrug, struggling to remember what little you'd known about the D models, especially why they had three seats. “Well, let's go get a cart and try them out.” You say, and Wendy nods. “With three of them, we can probably get at least one in the air.”

Wendy nods again, climbing carefully out of the cockpit and down off the fighter.

The two of you make your way back to the base admin building, where you eventually scare up a major in charge of one of the base wings, who agrees to loan you a team to check the bats out.

The officer in charge- a captain- doesn't say anything about the bats, though you can tell he's thinking what the fuck about as hard as possible. Still, the teams go over them- the second on in line is the best of the lot, both of her monstrous wright-cyclones in good shape, though her tanks are dry and her electrical system is questionable. She's still got her guns, too, the six 37mm cannon these aircraft were built around, as well as the D model's FFAR bays.

Finally, with the three old fighters checked out, the captain brings in a flatbed- actually an old tank transporter from god knows where- and they, along with you and Wendy, load the three bats up, with the understanding that they'll clear them for flight, but then they become your problem.

Well, 'problem'. You're sure someone, someone named Frank, even, will be excited as hell to get to fly these things.

Now if only you could get him to think that way about 'flying' some of the witches you work with.

simple

lock him in the closet together with a witch. More is preferrable but optional.

>Now if only you could get him to think that way about 'flying' some of the witches you work with.
Obviously we need a sherk quest 2 where we do nothing but this.
>>
And that's it for the night!

I'd planned more, but that bunch of slow updates kinda screwed us- sorry about that, something popped up requiring attention. Very sorry about that, we'll sort it out later, maybe in another shark run.

We'll be back with Frank and company next week, though, and there's a lot to do, I'm looking forward to it, personally.

Anyway, till then guys, I hope you enjoyed, and we'll be back at the regular time next week! till then, cheers!
