Well, ok, he's not a witch, but you feel a kind of camaraderie with him that kind of obligates you to wear a flight suit. Besides, it's kinda chilly in here.

Downstairs, Wendy's already up, boiling the water for morning tea. She's not got anything on the stove yet, and you kinda feel like cooking breakfast, even if not everyone appreciates your omelettes.

The two of you sign out a humvee from the motor pool- You'd take a train, but the lines recently have been crammed full of big logistics trains, and those aren't comfortable at all for any length of time.

The drive to Poznan takes a couple hours- the weather's no better this way than out east, but eventually you find one of the aircraft depots. This one's run by the USAF, and it's a regional maintenance and regeneration base- handling almost everything from the US inventory in theater, alongside a Polish unit doing the same work. The Luftwaffe and French ADA tend to send their aircraft further west, with the worst cases usually just stripped at their base and left there as hulks.

You check in with the base security, who give you permission to check the local boneyard, though they warn you there's not a lot there, really, having been picked over multiple times. If you can find anything airworthy, they'll help you move it, but the guy you talk to warns you that they've had a few crashes, and if their chief maintenance test pilot doesn't clear it, you're not leaving with it, witch or no.

There's four rows of aircraft here, mostly small stuff, though you clearly see one battered C-130 in there too.

Wendy looks over at you, tapping a flashlight on the heel of her boot. “Where should we start?”

Obselete design, basically. Or at least for the American air forces. It was designed with an older paradigm in mind. Eyes down, missile boat stuff, you know? Vietnam showed that that was a bloody stupid idea. It was a strike aircraft for nukes, anti-ship stuff, etc, but they had other aircraft in the pipe that could do that, and more, better.

It was basically an aircraft without a niche, and too many complicating factors. Alright for the Aussies, who didn't really have any bombers or dedicated ground attack aircraft to speak of, and they didn't want to run a variety of aircraft for logistics reasons, but for the Americans it was the white elephant they needed to move.

You stick the humvee in park and look through the driving rain, trying to find something. Finally, your eyes come across what looks like a utility prop plane, parked next to a hulked mirage.

“Hey, Wendy.” You say, pointing. “That first row, that twinprop looks like it might still be airtworthy.”

She looks at it, frowning, but then nods. “It may be. I can't see any damage from here. Shall we go take a look?”

You nod, reaching around behind you to pull two ponchos up, and handing one to Wendy.

You struggle to get into them in the confines of the vehicle, then step out into the rain, turning so it's not driving straight into your eyes. It's not the worst you've ever been in, but it's right up there.

The ground squelches under Wendy and your boots, and you wish you'd had another prosthetic available- the cheetah foot isn't exactly optimal for conditions like this.

Wendy flicks on her flashlight and steps in the open side hatch of the aircraft while you look around outside. It doesn't look too bad- honestly, you wonder why it's here instead of somewhere on the base's flight line. There's some cannon damage to the fuselage, but nothing critical it looks like- you think it could be patched, so long as you never tried to pressurize it, you'd be ok.

Both turboprops look to be in good shape, though the rightside one shows some evidence of a leak, with fluid stains around the mount.

Climbing inside, you note that the hold has been totally gutted, with nothing attached to the deck at all. “How's it look up front?” You ask, climbing forward and taking a seat after throwing your poncho over the side of the copilot's chair.

You nod, having figured as much. You search around the cockpit, looking for the switches you'll need, and finding them after a while. Crossing your fingers, you flip the battery power on- and get nothing.

“Well, no shock there.” You mutter, looking to see if there's any visible damage to any of the cockpit's internal spaces, and being gratified to see none.

“Well, Wendy, there's no power, probably no batteries.” You say. “So we can't get an idea of what kind of shape this bird's in.”

“We can go ask the maintenance people for one.” She points out. “And drive it back here. Or we could keep looking.”
