Stage 34: Looking long into an abyss might be better....

The worst part about having family is that win or lose they're still family. Directly related or not, they're still part of your world. Ryuu Wakaba is one of those special cases where you really hope she doesn't share any actual bloodline with you since she's bona fide fucking crazy. She wants Akari's position – not because it puts her close to you, but because it would mean that she would be more favored in Oba-san's eyes. Though she wouldn't mind the opportunity to demonstrate she can defeat you, because she believes Oba-san might reassign her to you as well.

This wouldn't be quite so bad if you hadn't suggest she's so much better than her team of dragonnes, dragonettes, and oni-born that she needs to replace them. She seems to have taken that as an opportunity to give you a performance or as chance to see her in action. Mostly because 'crazy' as near as you can tell.

So far everyone has played their parts perfectly, Kiki-hime the stuck up principle, Kiku-chan in the background, ready by your command to take out any real magic the trio of Void dragonettes might hurl, Akari nearby and ready to take on Wakaba at a gesture, Er Yin and Yui close to Kiki-hime in case the shit really hits the fan. Wakaba being a Stone dragonette puts you at a distinct disadvantage, but Kiki-hime has been training, possible enough to help. Since there are no Fire dragonettes, Er Yin-sensei has a distinct advantage despite the Fire oni-children.
>>
>>35216398
Your Water Eyes tell you the people serving under Wakaba are close knit enough to be a threat and to support each other well, but Wakaba only has a tenuous relationship with them. Most of them are afraid of her, while the quintet of oni-born (two Fire and three Wood) appreciate her foolhardiness and willingness to wade into the thick of things herself. She can afford to – she's nearly invulnerable and hideously strong. But she doesn't have Akari's advantages either, one of those being the favor of a god. Maybe two, possibly three if you count. Interestingly, none of your dragon-born opponents have utilized any of their Eyes; perhaps they're hoping for a peaceable solution as well.

You've offered Wakaba a reasonable tale to tell Oba-san, and she seems to have bought it herself, and you've gotten the right mixture of 'disgruntled clan-girl on a first mission' and 'leader of a bunch of incompetent mercenaries' down well, flavoring it with a touch of 'snobby bitch of a principle bothering me.' Perhaps too well considering Wakaba's offer. As long as no one drops a Barrier, the charms and the matagama necklace you were are protecting your true natures quite well.

On the other hand, Wakaba is one of those problems that's going to come back to haunt you – in a few days, as a matter of fact, to check up on you. And she's a psychopath, an honest to Kami one with every reason to believe her delusions since most of them have a basis in reality. She is obeying Oba-san currently, but if she gets it into her head she could replace Akari and take over her place to please Oba-san....bad things will happen.

You qualify as a Very Bad Thing at this point, even without the power of Horobi.

[] “That won't be necessary, Wakaba-san. Perhaps later.”
[] Keep an eye on Wakaba for signals to her group. “No, that's not necessary, I've already seen how good you are.”
[] “Wakaba-san! You know I can't take challenges while I'm working!”
[] Prepare to have Akari mock-challenge Wakaba, and prepare to take out the closest batch of other dragonettes and oni-children yourself. “Show me how, Wakaba-san?”
[] “You know Oba-san would be upset with use posturing like this, Wakaba-san.” Take a step forward, present yourself as the only opponent.

Could we infer that the reason Akari was assigned job as our keeper was because Oba-san did not want to 'waste' Wakba's skills with such a trivial matter... Really, at what point would being our keeper give her any honour or raise her in Oba-sans view...

[+] Catholics and diversions and implications, oh my.

As much as you would like to take them out and be done with it, it's just too dangerous and unpredictable. As quickly and as well as your people have trained, and despite the difference in power between your family and Wakaba's cadre, the chances of something going very wrong here are too high for even a mock fight.

Which is kind of a pity because you were really hoping to kick some Clan Ryo ass.

Still, there might be a way to make use of Wakaba's misguided loyalties and desires. If you're careful, and maybe a little lucky. You strep forward and to the side, gesturing at Akari to step away a little, allowing Wakaba-san to see the Clan Ryo sign-talk. “You know Oba-san doesn't take well to us posturing during assignments, Wakaba-san.” Akari takes two steps back towards Kiku-hime, who looks worried now. Er Yin's tail lashes slowly as Kiku-chan watches the Void dragonettes warily. Yui-chan is still at attention, holding the spetum threateningly towards the clan members.
>>
>>35217214
Ryuu Wakaba looks annoyed, and flexes her grip on the sheath of the nodachi, though her grip on it's hilt doesn't change from the light clutch that is appropriate for drawing it. You press your advantage speaking calmly, and adjusting your tone specifically for the Water dragonettes and dragonnes. “It's not exactly a prominent position I'm in, much less anyone under me. Oba-san needs better skills elsewhere, and it is trivially easy to do what Akari does for me. Only someone with no ambition truly worthy of Clan Ryo would want her position.” Despite the suggestion that the position is beneath her, your words themselves mean something entirely different to those like you. That sets the Water dragon-children on alert, and one of them gestures to the Void dragonette and one of the Wood oni-born, who now look like they're having a lot more than second thoughts about this entire situation.

Wakaba is looking a little suspicious, but you suddenly stand up straight, crossing your arms and looking casual. “I'll tell you what though. There's a group of priests who have been causing me trouble. If you want to give me a hand and demonstrate your skills, you could take care of them for me – they're human though, so you know what that means. Otherwise I would have taken care of them myself.” That gets her attention nicely.

“Human priests? What on earth are they bothering you for?” As she relaxes, most of her group does as well, though the oni-children look particularly disappointed in the lack of a fight.

“They want to perform an exorcism on Kumatori Kiki,” you supply blandly.

The burst of laughter from Wakaba is followed by laughter among her crewe, the ridiculous idea simply mind boggling. You note with some pride despite the relatively relaxed poses, your family is ready to take the fight right to them the instant you suggest it.
>>
>>35217236
“Truly, Ryukusa-san? They want to drive the demons out of her? Do they think she's possessed?” You nod solemnly, which brings more laughter from the group of dragon-children and oni-born, who know better than to believe such a far fetched idea. “Well, for Ryukusa-san, I will do it. You may count on me.” She gestures and her people start leaping into the tree-line up the hill, deeper into the woods rather than towards the city. Only a few remain – one of the Fire oni men, one of the Water dragonnes, and the trio of Void dragonette. “I'll let Oba-san know what's going on, Ryukusa-san. See you in a few daaaays!” She turns and leaps after the others, followed closely by the people she clearly favors.

The Water dragonette hesitates, and then glances at Wakaba, then back to you. “You should be more careful about your training areas from now on. You cannot tell what might be in the trees watching.” With that she darts off, running swiftly after the others. You let your Water Eyes close, and sigh. Kiki-hime murmurs softly that she can't sense them any longer, so they are far enough away that you can consider your people safe....for the moment.

[X] Gather your companions and discuss what just happened.
[X] Have Er Yin scan the trees carefully for spirits or spies.
[] Kick something.

You make several gestures to Kiku-chan, who immediately takes Er Yin's hand. Er yin gives a slight nod, and takes a deep breath, her arms circled out in front of her, one foot lifted off the ground save for the toes of her shoe, the other knee slightly bent. It's a basic tai chi pose, colloquially referred to as hugging the tree, and easily mistaken for a meditative pose. You suspect there's more to it than that however.

You gathers the others near her, and crouch before them. Kiki-hime lets loose with an exhausted groan and collapses to the soft grass, while Akari goes to her knees seiza next to you, and Yui does so next to Kiki-hime – taking her duty exceedingly to heart, which gives you a flash of pride that you let her see in your smile. Her blush is instant and she struggles not to fidget. It is Kiku-chan who speaks first, tugging on her boyish tunic and fingering the copper belt she is wearing.

“That is one crazy lizard-girl, aniki-dragon.” She glances at the direction they left in. “I don't think sending her after the Catholics was a good idea.”

“They're only humans, but they're sorcerers in their own way. She's crazy, but not so far gone that she will outright kill humans, I think. If they provoke her, that's their own fault, not mine. I don't need the headache from them anyways.” You glance at Akari seriously. “Be honest, Akari-niji-chan. You followed the combat bets more than I did. Can you take her if she's not going all out?”
>>
>>35217902
Akari looks at you with carnelian eyes. “I can take her if she does go all out, aniki. I trained with you, and I have Nikne Kamuy's blessing. She's very well trained, but I'm better in almost every way. I am also not as easily fooled as she is.” The dragonette's gaze turns to Yui. “She's as strong as I am, but she won't hesitate to hurt you as badly as she can, so don't hold back with her if you get into a fight. She won't try to keep you alive, you're not a dragonette.”

The oni-chick grimaces, and runs a hand through her gleaming white-bronze hair. “Fack. You dragon girls sure are prejudiced.” Akari nods sagely.

“Well, when you hang around perfect girls like Kiki-hime and Er Yin-sensei, it's bound to make you envious,” you point out, earing you a handful of grass from Kiki-hime and a shy smile from Kiku-chan. Er Yin drops her pose and sits in the grass; Kiku-chan immediately climbs into her lap, and is rewarded with those powerful arms sliding about her waist. “She wasn't being very sophisticated about it, but that Water dragonette was definitely hinting that they have spies in the woods.”

Er Yin nods slowly. “Yes, Ryukusa-sama. The lesser tree spirits were speaking with the wind spirits, and the wind spirits carried their words around. It's a very simplistic spell, but pervasive. It would take cleansing the entire area to quiet them, or the passing of day into night. I would guess they have one person do the spell with each change of day and night, two one day and two the next.” Kiku-chan makes a soft 'tch' sound. “Very simple to create, very difficult to counter because it is so simple.”

[XX] How long will it take to summon the allies you said we could try for?
[X] Can we turn the spell directly to our advantage?

Leaving the forest-whisper spell aside for the moment, you frown and ask the more important question. “How long will it take you to cast the spell to call other spirit-born to assist us, Er Yin-sensei.” She had warned you that it would only bring those interested in the cause, and that it could bring any type of spirit child to your aide, so those two factors are nothing you can control, so you ask about the aspect you can plan around.

Er Yin considers carefully and asks Kiku-chan something in Ainu. Kiku-chan looks down at the ground, considering carefully, then responds in Ainu. Er Yin considers a moment more. “With as crowded as things have become, and with the presence of more kami in general....I would say several hours to cast, and a few days to see the first results.” Longer than you'd like, but with the upcoming battle, that's tolerable.

The other problems is more troublesome, especially since you can hazard a guess it will affect huge sections of forests, maybe even all of them around Tokyo. Except the ones near the Temple of Forgotten Stones and Flowers. No lesser spirit would be in that area ever. On the other hand....

“Er Yin-sensei....could we turn that spell to our advantage? Or make it pointless? If the charms can't protect us against that, perhaps we could tap into the spell and learn what they learn before they learn it. It's not as good as countering it, but it would be almost as good as tapping into their radio frequencies.” You flex your left hand slowly, feeling the power shift in the strange flesh and gemstone hidden under the glove you are wearing. “Between you and Yui-niji-chan you should be able to work something out.”
>>
>>35218526
“Couldn't I just ask the trees not to tell?” asks Kiki-hime softly. “I mean, if I can control them....”

Akari is already shaking her head. “It is a magical spell, you have no power against it.”

You can't help but agree. “It would be like me trying to drown Akari-niji-chan or Er Yin-sensei trying to bespell Kiku-chan. It just won't work.” Kiki-hime nods, looking thoughtful. Looking like she's trying to work a way around that issue. “But if we can somehow gain some measure of access at least....”

Yui pipes up. “I can always confuse the wind spirits so they can't tell who is who. It won't really stop them, but it will mean they can't tell anyone who is going where. I can even only work it on the ones affected by the spell.”

“If that because of your ties to Kuroukami or because of your ties to the Void, Yui-niji-chan?”

“Both! Communication is part of the Void, but the wind spirits answer to me because I'm one of Kuroukami's oni.” Yui smiles brightly, her eyes gleaming unnaturally in the shade of the trees.

[] Then you can't do that. You're my oni now, and I don't have that kind of power yet.
[] All right, we can give that a try. See how it works.

[] Can you talk to the spirits of the wind and see what they think of it?

Shaking your head, you hold up your hand. “Better discuss it with Miko-Kiku-chan and Er Yin-sensei, Yui-niji-chan. They're more up on how to deal with spirits and kami than I am. Besides, you're not Kuroukami's oni any longer, you're my oni. That means you work under my auspices, and I'm afraid dealing with the winds directly isn't on that list.” ~Yet~ you think. You're fairly certain that Horobi has a lot of pull in that direction, especially with powerful and destructive wind spirits.

Kiku-chan nods, Er Yin's hand playing in her hair lightly. “Aniki-dragon is right. You might accidentally get the attention of the full blooded oni in charge of that sort of stuff that Kuroukami has assigned if you do something like that directly.”

“That does not mean you cannot help with the problem, Yui-san. I think you will be able to help us very well with that problem in a different way.” Er Yin-sensei smiles, her sightless eyes gazing somewhere past you into nothingness. “It is something we can discuss at least.”

Yui-chan looks slightly disappointed that she couldn't fix the problem for you, though.

“For now, we'll just have to keep in mind that our movements are watched by any grouping of trees large enough to be a grove and that any location like that is instantly compromised to Clan Ryo.” You blink and suddenly realize something. “Wait – Er Yin, didn't you cast a spell to make sure Ryuu Wakaba would show up? Why bother if that spell was already in effect?”
>>
>>35219056
“I did not know that spell was in effect, Ryukusa-sama. But the spell also ensured it was Ryuu Wakaba and none other than showed, regardless of who else might have known our whereabouts. The tree-whisper spell reports to the dragon-child who casts the spell, not to all whom know of the spell. I would need names or birth charts to add us to that spell – unless Yui-san can help us bypass that part of the spell somehow.” There is another way that you could counter the spell, of course – it's obvious that the Void dragonettes with Wakaba are the ones who cast it, because it was her Water dragonette that warned you of it.

No Void dragonettes, no spell.

You shake your head, keeping that option open for later. “That's fine, Er Yin-sensei, sorry, it was one of those weird thoughts.” Er Yin shakes her head with a smile, dismissing any lack of trustworthiness that you might have implied. “Well, then....”

[X] Continue training Kiki-hime with Akari while your Void-and-Spiritualist section confer.
[X] Take Yui-chan aside and comfort her.

“....Er Yin-sensei, Miko-Kiku-chan, I'll have You two and Yui-niji-chan come up with something to deal with that obnoxious little tree-and-wind trick, while Kiki-hime and Akari-niji-chan and I train. I have to borrow Yui-chan for a moment though.” The soft chorus of 'hai' is interspersed with the drawn out 'haaaaiii' of Yui, and you grin. Standing up and taking her hand, you walk away from the others, and she blushes a little, despite her tomboy appearance.

When you are far enough away that the voices of the others are unintelligible, you turn and take both of Yui's hands in yours, looking down at her. Her eyes slide away from your face, the glowing blue orbs glittering and off to the side. “Yui-chan, look at me.” She hesitates, then looks up at you, her cheeks flushed, though you suspect more with shame than with embarrassment. “Even if the idea you had doesn't work, it was a good idea. Don't ever hesitate to give me those ideas because sometimes they can be incredibly useful or important. You should never feel bad for sharing them with me, with Akari, with Kiku-chan. You are part of my clan now, and that means I need to be aware of what you think so that I can make the best decisions possible.”

She blinks, her eyes brimming with tears. “It's....not a bad thing that I could have made trouble by doing something like that?” You blink, controlling your expression. You're not entirely sure why she would think even sharing such an idea would be bad, except for how her family most likely reacted to her ideas. Oni, staunch traditionalists as they are, would not take kindly to a bright and forward thinking girl like Yui, despite the fact that some of them were obviously such people themselves.

“It would only have been a bad thing if you had tried it without consulting the rest of us and it turned out badly. Things like that can be really unpredictable.”

[X] I MUST HAVE THESE THINGS.

She blinks back the tears, rather ineffectually, so you bring her hands up together in yours, and kiss her knuckles upon one hand and the ring she bears upon the other softly. When she looks down, still ashamed that she was unable to help you with a problem that much older dragonettes couldn't help you with immediately, you let go of her hands and draw her close, looking down at her as you lightly trace the lines for the word 'perfection' upon her forehead.

Then you smile down at her as she slowly wraps her arms about your waist; you run your fingers through her strange metallic hair, lightly tracing her small horns. “You are my courier, my outrider, and my harbinger, Yui-niji-chan. You are my right hand, as Akari-niji-chan is my left. She is my counselor, my gatekeeper, and my executioner. Between the two of you, I expect you to take care of me and protect me from myself as well as others. So, you may always say whatever you need to say, even if it seems foolish, stupid, or wrong to you.”

She smiles up at you and nods slowly. “All right, aniki. I promise I'll take care of you.”
>>
>>35219974
You lean down and bring your lips close to hers. “I expect noting more or less from my beloved cloud-rider,” you whisper before you kiss her, deeply and slowly. You can feel the heat in her cheeks, taste ozone and lightning on her tongue, and feel the weight of her embarrassment fall away from her like a discarded robe. As you stand up she looks up at you, determination and adoration shining in her eyes. Literally, her eyes are glowing that brightly. “Go and help Er yin-sensei and Kiku-chan, cutie”

“HAI!” She turns and bolts off to join them, while Kiki and Akari are both looking towards you with surprise at the vibrant shout. Kiku-chan is frowning mildly, but more at the noise than the reason for the noise; Er Yin is simply smiling. You walk to meet Akari-chan and Kiki-hime with a smile. “She's got a few issues still. I think she'll be okay though.”

“That's a relief. She looked so sad she couldn't help earlier,” comments Kiki-hime, while Akari-niji-chan merely smiles. “What are you going to teach me, Ryu-chan?”

[X] Clan Ryo hand signs.
[X] Target practice with your bow.

You gesture to Akari, who casually gestures back, the movements seeming innocuous, but your – and her – purposeful exaggeration catching Kiki-hime's eye. “I've seen you do things like that before sometimes. Onee-chan and Akari know what all those mean, don't they....”

Akari is already walking off and looking for suitable targets, though it is obvious to you she's carefully keeping you and Kiki-hime in her field of view as much as possible. “I told her we were going to teach you bow work and to use a couple of stones as targets. Looks like she found some.” You step close to your boyishly dressed wife, and stroke her shoulders gently, brushing her silken hair away from her face and cheeks. “Listen to me carefully, Kiki. While Akari-niji-chan is nearly invulnerable, against your weapons, or any weapons of wood that a Wood dragonette uses, she's as vulnerable as a human is. She trusts you and trusts in her skill to keep her safe.”

Kiki-hime pales and you smile, looking into her sky blue eyes. “I trust you too.” She nods, swallowing, and she changes the staff she has been using, and strings it carefully, making it into the massive longbow used in Kyudo. You hand her a twig and she looks at it, shapes it into a simple looking arrow – even the fletching is of wood, and it has a simple point. “I'm not surprised you learned this so quickly,” you murmur as you step behind her, laying one hand on her shoulder and reaching past her with your other hand. You make two more gestures and Akari nods, holing to flagstone sized pieces of granite, one in each hand.

“I told her that she is to throw one in the air....and the other at you, three seconds after I give her the signal to attack.”

“....wha-” You don't give her the chance to respond before you give Akari the signal to attack, whispering the name of the sign in Kiki-hime's ear. To her credit she quickly notches the arrow and draws the bow, taking aim at Akari. Three seconds later Akari hurls one rock up in the air, and then the second at Kiki-hime. Kiki-hime sights on the rock Akari hurled up and looses the arrow, and the wooden arrow pierces the stone. She stumbles trying to get out of the way of the other rock, but your left hand it there, catching the heavy stone with ease before it slams into her.

She steps back, into you, and you can feel her heart pounding through her back, against your breast.

[] Hug her, then gently explain what she did wrong.
[] Ask her why she attacked the harmless rock, whispering in her ear.
[] Smile and toss the rock back to Akari, rinse, repeat, patting your wife's shoulder.

[] Ask her if she'd feel better shooting at you than at Akari.

You hug her let her feel your presence, and she relaxes, just a little. “You don't need to move that far to get out of the way of something thrown by an expert. You only need to move far enough to make sure it doesn't hit you. You tried to move much further than you needed to, and you're not familiar with the terrain.” Keeping one hand in her field of vision at all times allows you to show her what signs mean what words. You keep the teaching to the simple one hand words for now. “I do have a question though.”

She looks confused as you toss the stone back to Akari easily, who catches it without effort. Akari picks up the other stone, and pulls the arrow out as Kiki-hime looks at you. “Yes, Ryu-chan?” she asks curiously.

You lean close and whisper in her ear, your lips lightly tracing the edge of her soft, pointed ear, which is turning red even as you speak. “Why in the world did you attack the stone that wasn't going to hurt you?” Her heart is beating fast for a much different reason now, and she blushes.

“Oh. I see what you mean, Ryu-chan. I'll do better this time.” You pat her shoulder softly, and you hold out your hand, gesturing to Akari. Kiki hesitantly offers, “Attack with both stones in three seconds?”
>>
>>35220931
“Yes, but you wasted two.” Kiki looks alarmed and swats one stone out of the air with her bow, pulverizing it; the other one passes within inches of you both as you follow her movements easily. You catch it before it zips past you entirely. Kiki's heart is racing and she looks pale as you toss it back to Akari. “That was almost perfect. Next time make sure you push the rock rather than hit the rock – sometimes people use things like dust bombs or glass filled with fluids, and breaking them can be bad.”

The soft blue eyes grow wide and she whispers softly, “This is what you were doing when you weren't in school, wasn't it.” Those beautiful blue eyes gaze into yours, and you feel your heart clench tight.

[+] Perhaps later we can talk about it.

You hesitate slightly, and her eyes widen, which is a really neat trick considering how wide they were before. “It was different than this, Kiki-hime. I'm not really sure you should ask about it right now, to be honest.” Or ever, but you can't really shut her out that much. The very idea of that feels wrong. But definitely not now. Her eyes shimmer a little and she reaches up, touching your cheek softly. You feel for her, though you know it should be more like you accepting her sympathy for you, because to you it was simply life as you knew it. To her it would be something horrible, a series of trials and horrors as much as her own trials were. You smile and lay your hand over hers and kiss her forehead softly. “We should be practicing, Kiki-hime,” you gently remind her and she nods, her expression becoming determined.

Akari-niji-chan is simply waiting patiently, stoic and placid as ever. You know better than to presume that she has no sympathy or awareness concerning what passed between you and Kiki-hime.

As you reach past her she immediately sweeps several blades of grass from the ground, and they change into slender green shoots; then they grow into long shafts of green death. Your lover is nocking one even as you sign to Akari to throw one stone at her and the other to one side and past her. You whisper the instruction to your lover even as you give them to Akari, who immediately responds as you command. This time Kiki-hime's arrow strikes the corner of the stone hurled at her, and it goes off to the side, rather than being pierced. She glances across to the second one and then turns to Akari once more already nocking another grass-arrow, reassured the other stone was not going to hit anyone else.
>>
>>35221598
“You will learn to use the grass and wood around you to sense the people around you, eventually, so you won't have to look as much. When you get very good, you'll be able to sense their bodies like I can, though in a different way. That was much better.” Akari is picking up several smaller stones now and walking further away. You reach past your lover, this time with both hands. “When we use two hands we can make more complex instructions....” You tell Akari and Kiki-hime with hands and words that you want Akari to launch all five stones at Kiki-hime, one by one, intervals of only a second.

“Ryu-chan I only have three-” You grin and gesture at Akari to begin as Kiki-hime yelps in alarm. Sure enough, she takes three of the stones out by deflecting them, and sidesteps one....only to jerk as you catch the fifth stone inches away from her face.

“You stepped to the left the last two times too, Kiki-hime.” She's shaking now, and her face is pale, fully aware of how close she came to getting brained by the fist sized rock. You gesture for Akari to move a little closer as Kiki-hime tries to calm herself.

[X] That's enough for now, time to take a break
[X] Kiss her and hold her tight.

Gently you wrap your arms around Kiki-hime as Akari collects a few more stones of the same size and shape – two of which she makes by crumbling larger rocks with her bare hands. You kiss her soft hair, holding her close as she shakes from the startling experience of nearly being brained by your best friend. You kiss her soft hair and lay one hand over her hear, letting her feel your presence, your strength, your warmth (though really she's warmer than you are – it's metaphorical warmth!). She slowly relaxes in your embrace and lets out a slow, shaky breath. “I know I'd heal very quickly after getting hurt, but it's still really scary,” she murmurs to you.

Turning her head and leaning around her, you kiss her on the lips, softly. “That's enough for now, Kiki-hime.” You gesture to Akari-niji-chan and she nods, setting most of the stones down, keeping one which she starts rubbing and pressing on with both hands as she walks over to where you are. “For a first day of training, you've done amazingly well, and not just because you've had amazing teachers.”

Your wife giggles softly and lets the bow become a staff and then a hair-stick. She leans into you, her free arm holding yours against her body. “Well, I won't say it wasn't scary, but I did enjoy it a little.” Akari walks up, rubbing and working on the stone she picked up as she sits down nearby. “Did you and Akari really train like that too?” You start to put off the question until later but Akari beats you to it.

“We used metal darts.”

….kamidamnit.

Kiki-hime stares at Akari. “But you're invulnerable....”

Akari nods mildly as she polishes the stone she's working on with her bare hands. Kiki-hime turns to face you as best she can, her eyes bright and filled with emotions that you're not too certain you want to analyze just yet. “She can throw things faster than what she threw at me....” You really want to squirm now; it's kind of hard not to, especially with her innocence about that kind of thing compared to other kinds of things.

[X] I'm a Water dragonette, Kiki-hime.

[] I promise I'll explain, but not right now.
[] We had to survive a lot of things worse than that.
[X] ….all right....you're going to want to sit down for this.

You sigh softly. “Water dragonettes don't have that kind of problem, Kiki-hime.”

“What kind of problem?” she asks softly, looking at you with the soft confusion that you'd expected.

“....can I borrow your bow and an arrow?” She blinks, but reforms the bow and an arrow out of a twig for you. “You're going to want to sit down for this. Akari-niji-chan?”

Your best friend glances up and blinks as you study the bow. “How far?”

Nocking the arrow, you tug lightly on the string. That much, huh? Well, she is a dragonette. “Whatever.” Akari nods and stands up, pulling a coin out of her pocket. She takes it to Kiki-hime and shows her the squared opening in the center, telling her to take note of how tarnished it is. She stands up and glances around. You let the world slip away, and you can feel the attention of the others on you now as well. The cool awareness of Akari, distracted and calm. Kiki's bright, innocent curiosity and confusion. Yui's excited curiosity and adoration. Kiki's hot gaze, filled with her leaping, vibrant awareness. Er Yin's sense of your senses.

Akari suddenly turn and hurls the coin in the direction opposite the one you are facing, the near silent ZZZZIIIP of the coin slicing through the air as she hurls it with all her strength. You turn and shoot, making it look as simple and casual as if you had done this all your life. Reverently you hand the bow back to Kiki-hime. “I'll be back in a few minutes, Aniki,” Akari murmurs as she starts walking in the direction she threw the coin.

“Hey – take Yui-niji-chan with you. No one travels alone. You know better than that.” She nods and waves Yui over, who immediately hops up and follows her lover into the woods. You sigh and sit down, as Er Yin and Kiku-chan start over to where you are sitting. “Water dragonettes are different than most of our kind. While Void dragonettes have magic, Wood dragonettes can regenerate, Fire dragonettes destroy things, and Stone dragonettes are strong and durable....Water dragonettes are killing machines.” Kiki-hime shakes her head, not understanding. “We are Clever and Dangerous. We can think and react faster, we can see all the tactical and strategic situations instantly, and we can fight incredibly well even if we're not trained.”

Kiki-hime looks confused. “Why does that matter to how you trained so dangerously?” You understand the gist of her question, awkwardly phrased as it is.

“Because for me, it wasn't dangerous.” You sigh and resist the urge to wring your hands.

Kiku-chan speaks softly. “Nee-chan, Ryukusa's mind is made for fighting. Everything she is, she is because she is made for winning whatever fight she is in.” She kneels next to Kiki-hime who is starting to get a glimmer of understanding. Kiku-chan lays one hand on her sister's while Er Yin sits to the side.

“Is that why you're afraid of fighting in front of me, Ryu-chan? Because you're afraid I'll see you as something scary too?” Her voice is soft, gentle even. Kiki-hime's question is left unanswered as Yui glides a cloud from the treetops and Akari hops off of it as Yui lands. She holds out the arrow with the coin impaled through it, wood shavings around the edges of the square hole.

“It was stuck in a tree about three hundred yards off,” says Yui-chan excitedly. “It was a perfect shot, aniki!”

Akari hands the arrow to Kiki-hime, who works the coin off slowly, looking at the polished edges of the square hole. “That's incredible, Ryu-chan,” she murmurs softly.

“Not really. It was my first time using a bow.” Kiku-chan blinks in surprise and Kiki-hime stares at you. “I do the same thing with guns, knives, swords, rocks, hair pins, beads, string, clothing, badgers....” Yui's jaw drops.

Kiki-hime looks at you with wonder in her eyes. “So when you say you are afraid of killing in front of me, it's not because you don't want me to see you kill someone.” You look at her and smile sadly.

Er Yin speaks for you. “It is because she does not wish you to see her as what she truly is, Kiki-san.” Kiku-chan squeezes her sister's hand gently, and looks at you, sympathy glowing in her soft golden eyes.

You look up at the branches above you. “It's a weird way to have to say it, I guess. I wanted to tell you in another way....but I guess this is as good a way as any. Fire is destructive, wood is nurturing, stone is accepting, void is understanding, and water is just....dangerous.” You smile and stand up slowly. “Sorry, Kiki-hime. It's not something I wanted to hide, just....” You shake your head. There's no real excuse, but it's not something you should have to excuse. Except you feel like you should anyways. Because Kiki-hime is innocent to such things as people who are designed for winning every fight ever.

Not that you WILL win every fight ever, but your brain is hardwired to try and your body is made to do what your brain demands.

You stand up. “I need to be alone for a little while please....I won't be-GUH!”

You grunt as Kiki-hime grabs you and hugs you tightly, tightly enough to kind of hurt a little. “Be quiet, Ryu-chan,” she says in a choked voice. “Just....be quiet.”

[] Well, if it's kiki-hime, it can't be helped.
[] Yes, princess.
[] Um....wait, what?
[] That's....not really the reaction I expected.
[] ….okay.

[X] ….okay.

You look down at her as she hugs you tightly, her eyes tearful and closed tight, face nestled against your breasts. You slowly lower your hands, stroking her soft fuchsia hair, letting her sniffle against you, her body shaking with emotion. You blink back tears of your own, and hold your wife, the girl you once despised and now would give your life for, who cared about you long before you knew any better.

Who doesn't care that you're a killing machine.

Yui is speaking softly to Akari.

“....what's the big deal?”

“Aniki forgets that she's a good person sometimes.”

“....aniki is pretty dumb sometimes,” Yui comments mildly.

“I keep telling her that,” replies Kiku-chan.

“Hush, you three. Come away.” Er Yin herds your family gently away from you, and lets you comfort – be comforted by? - the woman who carries your daughter, who doesn't care what you are, only that you stay with her.

Glad everyone enjoyed. I can answer a few questions if there are any.

The smoke is much less, but still around, while the rain has helped some. Hopefully the fires will be out at the end of the week.

>the woman who carries your daughter
Is there any way we could get a son?
>>
>>35224275
Not without powerful magical interference, the assistance of a Dragon Kami, or the help of a Kamuy. All those XX chromosomes still count, despite their magical nature.

Also, Kiki-hime is already pregnant, it would have to be one of the others.
>>

>it would have to be one of the others.
Of course. I was considering either Akari or Er Yin. Do you have any preference?

Badger-battle when?

Er Yin
>>
>>35224361
Not my place to say, really. Also, pretty random as far as pregnancy occurring or not - the Pearl touching trick only works for Kiki-hime.
>>
>>35224268
Have you thought about getting a gas mask? Army surplus stores usually have them. Hell, I got one for thirty bucks, filter included.

As soon as you meet one.

Incidentally, badgers are considered happy, jolly creatures in Japan.
>>
>>35224426
Take about three wet washcloths. Place them over you nose and mouth. Breathe through them.

That's what breathing is like for me without a gasmask. Having anything over my face is intolerable.
>>
>>35224431
That's a good question. Quite probably after the oni battle, during the beach episode.

A better question might be whom she will be taking with her, if anyone. she has only six doses of the ointment....enough for six one way trips, or three two way trips.

Look at it this way - there is almost nothing that can stop me from breathing. The muscles that drive my lungs are amazingly strong now.
