You watch as your new pods and shuttles come to life. You tow the pods into orbit and your shuttles move to ferry the goods between your hive and your asteroid mining base, moving nutrients and metals back and forth between them. Your hive is abuzz with activity as your workers move from task to task and your pylon works on your newest batch of corvettes.
You can hear an argument in the bowels of your hive. Coil has been helping to drive the twins along in their duties with his usual enthusiasm.

“When we go?”
“You stink of bug, not fish.”
“We help, now we go!
“Yes! Go!”
Coil’s skin shifts through a number of colors before he replies in a more civil manner with his translator. “You have no idea of the importance of your duties! We are here because it was our fate to lend our aid, and that is what we will do.”

“Is what you do.”
“We do job. See no pay.”
“No pay, no stay!”
“You so good with them, you let us go.”

“It’s always the same with you! You can’t seriously place credits over the importance of destiny?”
The two look at each other for a moment before turning back to Coil, “Yes.” They say in unison. Coil's skin flashes through several vibrant colors as the twins scamper off into the vents of the Hel's Angel to seal some coolant leak.

>Regeneration Tank
With your new understanding of both alien biology and the operation of the medical tank, you can now construct your own Regeneration Tanks. These large, protein filled membranes are capable of stimulating cellular regeneration to heal wounds and scaring, as well as perform extensive surgical procedures with a greatly reduced risk of injury. The tank can be prepared in a moment’s notice to accommodate any creature with a biology you are knowledgeable of. The tank can also be used to store bodies for later study, and perform autopsies and dissections at a rapid pace with far more detailed results. (50N)
>Net Gun
This simple weapon uses compressed gas to silently fire a large cellophane slug. Upon hitting the target the slug bursts open, ensnaring the target in a half-liquid membrane that quickly hardens into a cocoon.

I recently realized that the crystalline hive and the biological hive are the same species. The reason the crystalline hive has such vastly different tech is because they were isolated from our kind for so long.

Yeah I was coming around to think that too.

They may have even done exactly what was done to the current queen: sent off a lone pod with a single cocoon and a Thinker to colonize an uncharted world, and that was the current queen's ancestor.

The descriptions of the crystal hives have been so incredibly vague, it's hard to tell, though.

Countless Queens
>>
Oh, reading it over, I think we made a mistake with our fake queen design. The humans have figured out that the queen is the leader of the hive not just a brood mare (Although their minds are unlikely to have wrapped themselves around the intricaties of precisly how a hive mind works.) This unfortunately means that even a basic autopsy will probably show that the Fake Queen isn't the real McCoy. The lack of a proper psionic emitter will probably be explained away, as it does have the basic version. The fact that its brain will obviously be grossly inadequate to do its job, and is far simpler than other examples they would have on file in this eventuality will probably be harder to explain unfortunately. Sure, it has a self destruct, but for a measly 4 N for a quantum brain, better to make sure.

Okay, guy who posted the Frigate design here, and in the last thread some anons made some very good points about some of it's shortcomings. If it's not too late to modify its design a bit I'd like to tweak a couple of things.

Frigate (800N 1600M)
Spinal mount(1): Linear Particle Beam 150M
Fixed(8): Railgun (4 w/acid ammo, 4 w/kenetic) 160M
Turrets(6): Cyclotron 150M
Auxiliary(4): Autocannon 40M
Heavy Armor (375N 1500M)
Rapid Damage Control (22N 30M)
Cloaking Field (75N 225M)

Total Cost: 1272N 3855M
upkeep: 636N

Swapped the cyclotrons on the auxilliary points for autoguns and replaced the plasma lances on the turrets for cyclotrons, so it can wreck havoc on it's target's sensors from a distance. Since we're a bit low on nutrients atm I figured it'd be smart to get rid of reflex armor and add heavy armor instead. The swarm is expensive for a ship that has point defense systems, and 50 fighters is a bit excessive, so I figured it should be left out of the default design. Once the ships are already built maybe we could add them to ONE of the frigates if our nutrient supply is substantial enough. Even without them this ship can tear through armour at a distance and still take one hell of beating.

Also, QD, according to the Ship Builder pastebin the cost of a spinal mounted weapon is 10M per 10 meters, which would make the cost of the Linear Particle Beam 150M. But I noticed that the price of the railgun on the Lancer Corvette's spinal mount is listed at 1000M, while by that formula it should be a tenth of that. Is there a typo here or should I recalculate the frigates value?

I don't see how that follows.

It's possible they know who they gave the crystals to, not necessarily their current locations. So they'd know the crystal's known location in the Skyl system. But not where Coil's current whereabouts are, even if they did see someone weird looking through one of Coil's assigned void shards.

>The humans see us blink on a regular basis idiot.
You mean 'twice'. At Raligha and at Koenig. What's your point?

Both times were blinking rather close by. Koenig was unlucky enough to be practically in their face.

None of that addresses the fact that more distant objects appear dimmer and are more difficult to detect. The only unanswered question is just how distant you have to go before you're dimmer than the least visible stars.

Even if it's powered by the magic-science of photons, the fact that waves spread out as they travel further, becoming weaker, seems like it would still hold.

Your blink drive, like most drives, release a large amount of raw radiation in all direction upon entering normal space. At a distance this can have a similar appearance as a distant supernova or gamma ray burst if the viewer doesn't know what he is looking for. At a distance of a light-day, the radiation would be dissipated enough to not be detected by most sensors, although a powerful radio telescope could theoretically still detect it if it happened to be trained on that exact location.
>>
>>35182098
Increased visibility to what observers in what system?

It would take literal lightyears for an actually visible flash to appear to the other human systems, because they don't see instantly-traveling tachyons, they can only see regular old photons.

Yeah, tachyons are effectively everywhere and nowhere. But in order for humans to even see a flash, they'd be seeing the photons, wouldn't they? They can't see a burst of tachyons. And photons have to propagate like they do in real world physics.

A myriad of vibrant flashes cover the sky for a short moment as your pods blink out of and back into existence.
>M-199
The red glow of the star is dim and diffuse at this distance. Your pod quickly wraps itself in twisted light before accelerating into the system, immediately entering a small nebula engulfing the system. The nebulous shell seems to envelop the star like an ort cloud, tapering off into a sparse layer of ice at its most distant reaches and intensifying into a thick soup of gas as you go further in. Your pod collects whatever data it can as it makes its approach, and you gleam several images of the system in the process.
Further into the system the cloud ends, replaced with a vast debris field. You detect a single planet in orbit of the star. No... it was a planet. A great, shattered sphere, split down the middle and cracked along the sides. The planet itself slowly drifts into pieces, grinding against itself like massive molars and sending bits of itself into orbit to join the rest of the debris. The rock and gas blocks your efforts for a more detailed view at the moment.

>M-323
Your pod enters space to see a vast red giant expanding out in all directions. Even at this distance it's immense size is apparent, as is its ring. A single, dark ring of stellar debris surrounding the otherwise empty system. Perhaps the star, in its ageing years, had devoured its planets as it expanded? The thin ring appears to be all that's left of whatever once resided here. Your pod begins its approach when it is hit with a faint wave of energy. A simple radio frequency, too faint to decipher, but to well structured to be natural.

Your pod quickly activates its stealth field and accelerates into the system. Whatever the source of the signal is, it must have been broadcasting for a long time.

A-295
Your pod enters space and quickly cloaks as it moves into the system. On its outskirts is a small, frozen ball of ice, totally uninteresting were it not for the small metal box in high orbit. You can't tell what its design is, but you can immediately tell it's clearly of human design.
Further in you detect a pair of highly active volcanic worlds rapidly orbiting each other in a dance around the small, white hot star. Even closer to the star itself is a tiny, sun baked rock. Radiation bounces off its surface like a mirror as the solar wind grinds at it like a stone in a river.

Bring up dumb long term ideas at the end of the thread, not when shit is actually potentially happening. Stick to what's urgent.

Because the obvious answers are you have no idea, no one has any idea, try again later.

If you can't figure out the answers from what's been happening in the quest so far, neither can the MC in-character, and neither can anyone else.

>>35183057
No. You're leaping to conclusions. You don't know the details. You only know that all Skyl's authorization to make the crystals listen to them was revoked, once they rebelled, obviously. And that this prevented them from committing suicide. it doesn't follow that their torment was a result of malice rather than ignorance. It's impossible to tell for sure.

I personally would see a better use of our time working altering the DNA of those crab eggs so when they hatch, they would have our drone brains inside them so we could control them like a drone.

You know this system has at least been plotted by the Unity, but as you enter the system you find it is clearly inhabited. The small brown dwarf holds a number of large satellites in its orbit, each one a vast server ship dedicated to a single purpose. One is unfurled like a sail a thousand kilometers in diameter, while another is splayed out like a great metal insect, its arms gouging the innards of a half-built hull. Another is covered in various glowing tumors of glass, inside each one you see a number of strange lights and tangled shapes. As you approach you make them out as plants within the ship, entire biomes uprooted and sealed into giant glass spheres. The server ships are parked in orbit of the star, interconnected into a mis-matched metropolis sprawling out in all directions. No part of the space city appears immobile, and no other planet is within your sight. Perhaps they chose this location believing it to be too absent of resources for anyone to contest it? It seems as good a place as any for a race of machines.

Your pod enters the system and begins its journey inward. The system is surrounded by a thin ring of gas that reflects the light of the star, making it appear far more solid then it actually is. The ring is likely the failed attempt of a would-be gas giant, and is filled with a number of Unity cruisers. You're not sure if they are on patrol in the area or simply harvesting gas, perhaps both. Past the outer ring is a thin asteroid belt, likely long stripped of resources, and still inward is a large portion of a small planetoid. Much of the crust has been ejected into space, and the surface has been shattered into an endless ocean of molten slag. Several server ships are boring into the molten crust with a number of massive energy beams, tearing deep welts and craters into the dense liquid surface as they slowly orbit.

>0-2
As you enter the system you are immediately bombarded with radiation. The small dwarf star is highly unstable, and is sending out waves of gamma radiation as it quickly rotates along its axis. Any useful resources have long since been blasted away, but you note a single server ship holding position nearby. It too appears to have elected to remain good distance from the star, and from within its hull you see a number of thin antenna and sensor clusters trained on the star, silently watching its every move, every churning and twisting motion of its plasma sea and every gust of the solar wind.

In a flash of radiation your corvette is gone, and then back. Your view is that of a single gas giant. A massive orb of blue and orange stripes. In a low orbit, just skimming the atmosphere is a massive cylinder of metal. Lightning bolts arc from the clouds to the hull and back as a stream of gas and asteroids flow into the open end of the ship. Almost at once a formation of cruisers accelerates in your direction as you detect Theseus feed a string of data to you, which is then transmitted via radio. Each cruiser has deployed a cloud of small spherical drones which have assembled in a wall between you and the server ship.
As Theseus finishes the transmission the wall parts and a single cruiser closes in on your corvette slowly. You receive a transmission in return.
"Transmission received. Dock with vessel to initiate exchange."
Yes the Unity as a whole already knows about us.

>crab farms
No. Shut up. There is zero reason for a hive race that does not benefit from a diverse diet to have livestock. Eating animals that have to eat plants in turn is less efficient than eating plants directly, as the animals use up and waste energy in their own upkeep over the slow ass years it takes to grow them.

It's retarded.

At least Unity and us have the same goals, to find new life. We just add it's DNA into our building pools, while Unity just stores it.

Say, while Unity does have badly needed Tech we can trade for, they also should have a wealth of new life forms data/DNA would could pick from and add to our options if we wanted to trade for that as well.
>>
>>35183770
Unity's claimed goal is scientific discovery, not just finding life. This is an important distinction.

Also bear in mind that at no point have we decided that our goal is to find new life. Expanding our repertoire of biological tricks is a vital tool, but very possibly simply a means to an as of yet undecided end.

The end the Unity strive for is really just that discovery. While discovery, for us, might be considered a tool in survival, to Unity, survival is a tool in discovering more of the universe.
>>
>>35183770
When did we become the federation
Our goal is to explore, expand and stomp anything in our way in finding out what happened to the rest of us
Researching is necessary but we aren't aiming for the tech victory

>>35183770
>At least Unity and us have the same goals, to find new life

I don't see much point in farming crabs and I'm the anon who suggested raising them. I'd rather raise them to gain the knowledge of how to and them trade it to the Unity as a part of something. If we are looking for a new food source I'd recommend looking into the: Space dust

While it was too minute to analyze in the field, this space dust contains trace amounts of nutrient contents. Testing should reveal if it is a form of life, or simply some strange natural phenomena, as well as how to make use of it.

As your pod enters its stealth field and starts accelerating toward the system you make note of a small gas giant. A number of server ships are in orbit, gulping down gas as they slowly skim the surface of the atmosphere. Further in you detect a single planet with a dense atmosphere. The planet is covered in a mixture of dense vegetation, deserts, mountains and frozen tundra. Along the equator is a vast collection of metal and plastic in the center of a large desert expanse. The city reaches outward and upward for miles where cruisers dock and undock on a regular basis, running back and forth to the passing server ships. The city itself is a source of mixed radio signals of all kinds, and you can hear Theseus arguing with himself a thousand times per second across the entire system as countless versions argue over each and every course of action. Even from the little you have seen of him, the chaos seems unbecoming of the Theseus you know.

Unity doesn't really care about shit except researching, and so long as we have the necessary info to pay them, they can double as a mercenary force IMO.

I'm skeptical that tech trading will in any way cement an alliance. It's not a consistent or impermanent enough trade to create demand, dependence, or deterrence to attack and/or betrayal.

We can probably find shield tech on the black market anyway. We can also probably sell metal on the black market for cash. Illegal (not actually because we're a sovereign nation but they don't know that) mining, yo.

You return to the binary system, but this time you detect much more activity then you did previously. A single ship drifts into orbit of the Valen colony, slowly descending on the small settlement. You watch as your pod approaches and the small Union corvette appears to dock at the colony. After several hours it ascends back into orbit and makes to leave.

>Aquila
Your pod enters the edge of the system and quickly cloaks. It required several jumps to arrive, and with the vast nebula of what the humans call the Antonine Wall at your back you move in. The star is a mild yellow sun with two smaller companion stars in a tight orbit. Solar flairs leap from one to another in brilliant displays. As you scan the system itself you note a wide range of radio transmissions and small ship traffic. Near the outskirts is a small frozen world covered in a dense metal bunker. Radio dishes and anti-orbital cannons litter the surface. After a short time of intercepting transmissions you conclude it is named Jotun, and is both a military post and a fleet officer academy.

Fuerther in you detect a large gas giant, Helios seems to be the name judging from the local transmissions. In its orbit are two large stations, Renly Station, a large hydrogen processing plant and refueling station, and the ominously titled Odin High Command, a great space fortress covered in weapons and swarming with fighters and corvettes alike.

Even further into the system is a densely populated and fertile New Sparta. The planet is pocketed with cities and a thin metal ring stretches around its equator in orbit where a number of large ships are docked. You detect hundreds of vessels of various size, although almost all of them appear to be merchant craft. You detect at least two battleship sized vessels and quickly identify them as the Saratoga and the Call of Terra.

The planet is covered in urban sprawl, with dense cities converging into vast corridors of monolithic spires. The military traffic is far less, but unending swarms of tankers and trade ships move in and out of dock in an endless stream. As your pod accelerates into the system under the cover of its cloak you are able to determine from the endless radio traffic that it is the capital of the Commonwealth, both in its government and economy. It has been some time since you last spoke with Lyle. He has spent most of his time sleeping within the confines of his cocoon within his cell. He doesn't seem to notice the noise as the door flexes open, but as the glow of the walls brighten the cell he squints his eyes and jerks his head slightly before looking up at your drone.

"I understand humans require... social interaction." Your speaker tilts its head inquisitively. "How have you been?"
Lyle stares at you for a short while before responding. His voice is slurred and raspy. "Still just hanging out. Where did you hear about humans, anyway?"
"A self-help book."
Lyle seems to find the comment genuinely funny. He bursts out into fit of laughter, although it's clear the sudden outburst is painful.

"Are you aware of the location of Constantinople?"
"Yea, up my ass an' round the corner. Why don't you ask that peice of shit Coil?"
"He claimed it is in the Sagittarius system, is this correct?"
Lyle stifled a chuckle as he gasps for more air, and stretches his neck with a sickening crack. "Coil's a fucking moron. Sagittarius was my post back in the day, but that dipshit never stepped tentacle on Commonwealth soil."

Interesting. Well at least you know not to trust Coil's information on the Commonwealth, although that doesn't leave much in the way of good sources.
"What is the state of affairs between the Commonwealth and Union?"
"An' why the flyin fuck are you so curious? Getting into politics, are we?"
"You appear to be dehydrated. Humans require so much water, but there is so little here."
Lyle makes an effort to spit, although he manages little more than an emphatic spray of sweat that is lost in the humid air. "Fuck you! I had a sweet gig, ok? Drop troopers get some good trainin' and better gear. Between that and the odd jobs from that fat fuck of a contact I had it made. I never gave a shit who wanted who dead or why, I just made sure it got done."
Your drone moves around the room, slowly pacing around his cocoon. "Yet you are here, trapped."
"Yea, well you can blame that on shitty intelligence work." Lyle sits still for a while longer before speaking again. "Never watched the news much, but there was never much love between the pigs and the dogs. I doubt they made nice while I was away."
"Pigs and dogs?"
Lyle grinds his teeth as he attempts to stretch himself in his position. "Yea, Union pigs and Commonwealth dogs."

Theseus has offered plenty of simple information before with no payment, just to satisfy curiosity.

It's information that's of more tactical value like technology or the location of Zero Five or how to attack a Union vessel without making it implode to steal its canderon, that he was reluctant to part with.

'How banking works' is probably in the free aisle. And knowing how easily, or not, that he can bypass Union tech is of no tactical value to the hive, which doesn't use such computers.

He's offered information on how and where Canderon is mined, he's offered general info on the various other species and factions, finding out how useful as an ally he might be, if we help him sneak close enough to compromise more Union ships, can only benefit him.

"And what about Coil? How did he come to you?"
Lyle leans his head against the wall and slowly blinks. "Found the little shit on Deep Song. Poor bastard had a case of illegal cargo and nowhere to call home. Said he'd make my ship the fastest ship in space if I took him aboard." He laughs softly to himself. "I told him to fuck off, but when he said he had a working slip drive on offer, and then he showed me the fuckin thing, well fuck, who would say no to that?
"The little shitter's a coward and a moron though. Eventually I found out that not only did he have no fucking clue how to actually maintain the damn thing, but he actually thought it was goddamn, shit you not, magic!" His laughing continues, despite the growing cramps in his side. "I mean what in the fuck? The guy's a member of some big mysterious race of technophiles and it turns out he worships a fucking engine. I might as well start the church of diesel! Fuckin' gets me every time I think about it."

"And what about your ship?"

"My baby, you mean?" He almost yells, although as you think he is about to go into a fit he jerks to the side and gasps in pain. "Stole it from Helviti when I was done with the place. Nasty prison planet, never considered good enough for a colony but the ore is too rich to pass up. Patrols went by the camp nightly, and sometimes they'd stop to refuel. A month of prep work and a riot later, and whata-ya-know, I got myself a nice little drop ship. Of course it didn't have a drive back then, so I had to drift for a while before somebody showed up. A little freight runner by the name of the Fat Lady showed up looking for salvage. Good mates they turned out to be. Scrap smugglers as it happened, few deals later and I manage to get my way to Valen space." Lyle's eyes seem unfocused, as if lost in thought.

Their word for individual is the same as woman, and their word for men are all synonymous with triplets. Any less then that is like a man without nuts." Lyle shifts slightly from one side to another in a vain effort to find a more comfortable position. "Found em in the squalor on Gideon living in the old atmo-processor. They usually hollow them out and turn them into space ports once the planet's good and baked, and the lower levels were nothin' but slums. The two skitter away, their tiny graspers sliding slightly on the bulkhead floor as they turn the corner.
"Yes!"
"Yes!
"This is agreeable."
"Agreeable, yes."
"Very well..." They are already out of view by the time your drone finishes. In moments they are by the airlock, environment suits half-suited, chirping gleefully.

>>35188939
You know its funny really.

We only had one person bring up a design right at the start and it actually was for something we were doing.

It looked like for the first time in a thread, we wouldn't have to deal with someone dumping their designs and the resulting feedback loop.

Well here's some feedback for ya.

The designs a waste.

It's cheaper for us just to recycle and make new drones for anything too damaged and given the amount of upgrades we go through well.

If this thing is supposed to take prisoners well we got special ammo for our weapons and gas to do that.

And really for dealing with anything complex in a drone or other creatures is gonna require the regen tank not this thing.

>Let them roam the area
-Keep watch and keep them from Dieing.
>>
>>35189225
That's not what medics do. I'm doubtful that a mobile biological interface is even useful. Single-purpose drones seem just as effective since we've already got drones that can take captives more effectively. Regen tanks can likely carry out most if not all currently practical medical experimentation -with lower risk- anyway.
>>
>>35189084
>Let them roam the area
>other
Keeps sniffers and warriors near by to save them.
>>
>>35189194
The medic drone sort of runs counter to how the hive functions. It's a swarm, a zerg rush of easily replaceable units with little individual worth. Much simpler to have regeneration tanks.

>>35189264
Unless we are experimenting in using chemicals to manipulate human behavior, in which case they can't be confined and unconscious in a regen tank.

>>
>>35189357
Or on civilian populations. or in ambush. or during boarding actions, depending on suiting protocol among all crewmembers.

Some potential for Speaker drones to manipulate those around them with airborne agents.
>>
>>35189357
Well yeah.

Being in a cell has more freedom of movement than being in a regen tank.

Also being conscious helps.

Small drones are also more mobile than regen tanks in case, for some reason in the future, one wants to start injecting incapacitated humans in the field with things.
>>
>>35189084
You let them work the airlock open, but you make sure to send a warrior out with them just in case.
They almost immediately lose your warrior, although it doesn't seem to be from a direct effort. Your patrolling sniffers manage to keep tabs on them as they roam through the jungle, poking and prodding at various creatures. Their suits seem to protect them more from the temperature than the toxins, which they seem to completely ignore.

You keep tabs on your ever growing number of input. Your ever expanding hive is growing into new and more interesting places. Your pods slowly drift into their new posts, while keeping one in your own system just in case you may need one later. The locals of Raligha continue their strange rituals, erecting totems and shrines around the entrance where your drones stand by. The humans within your hive stir and pace in their cells, unsure of what to do or what to expect. Elizabeth still sleeps, although some random thoughts seep from her mind. They seem to coalesce into a strange vision. Some distant planet long ago, filled with computers and machines of unknown purpose. The vision is cloudy, but it's obviously some memory from long ago.
You look through her eyes. A reflection of a younger Elizabeth can be seen in the glass covering the shelves, her hair longer and neatly trimmed. On the far side of the room you see a man in a lab coat smiling back. His face seems familiar to you.
"Doctor Seiner, it's an honor to be working with your program. I wrote my thesis on your theories of communal civilizations."
"The pleasure is mine. You had top marks in every class. Now, I'd like to introduce you to our little secret project out here on the edge of space..."

Now that we hit the bump limit, I think this is a perfect time to discuss new design ideas. Also, I'll be running a double thread tonight.

Special Operations Warrior

Mandibles: Combat 1N
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Strength 1N
Legs: Sprint 1N
Wings: Moderate 2N
Utility: Explosive Acid Glands 1N

Cost: 12N10M
Upkeep: 6N

A cheaper alternative to sending in a full squad of Shocktroopers in missions where stealth and plausible deniability is required. These specialized Warriors are designed to be deployed in squads led a Shocktrooper.
These drones are able to match a Shocktrooper's mobility with their wings, as well as having increased stealth options with their mimetic skin. They are just as expendable as their unmodified brethren, but their acid glands allow them to be used in situations where leaving a corpse is to be examined is dangerous for the future of the Hive
They are useful only in a few situations, but just putting this out.
>>
>>35189469
I'd like to propose adding gliders to our standard warrior design. The added tactical flexibility of aerial insertion and increased ease of movement over uneven terrain is well worth the 1N cost.

I'd also like to propose having a singe single-purpose Regeneration Tank drone onboard all exploration ships (except probes, obviously) as standard procedure.

>>35189573
I propose "Crack Baby" as the official name.
More seriously, how about "Leech"?
>>
>>35189469
Well, first I have some questions relevant to drone design.

We've reverse engineered the regen tanks, so we now also understand the Union's medical technology scanning abilities.

If we stick a parasite drone inside a human, would Adaptive camouflage and Mimetic skin be helpful in evading detection by medical scanning? Would radiator tubes be necessary to hide thermally, or could it just naturally blend in with a human body temperature?

Adaptive camoflage is said to give bonus against radar, and presumably CAT scans are the same principle?
>>
We really need a drone with the Seek Pod on it. Anyone got a better idea than just slapping one on a warrior to make a variant?
>>
>>35189535
Yeah I wonder about the heavy armor though. I guess it makes sense when consider these are the heaviest ships we can -affordably- cloak, and we're still trying to keep under the Union's radar.

Also, could we design a fighter drone? 50 fighters is a bit much for a frigate, in my opinion. Make much more sense to design a cloaked interceptor-type ship for hit and run attacks on enemy vessels and put maybe half a dozen on a frigate.
>>
>>35189647
Q:
>Conversely would it simply be better to have ship specced out for Point Defense that we use to cover ships using Cyclotrons as their PD equivalent? Part of that question would also be, would you allow a PD ship to actively provide covering support/defense to other ships? Range limitations?

A:
>This is actually one of the primary uses of the Corvette as it is faster and has more auxiliary hardpoints than any other ship. A fleet with a wide mix of weapons and equipment would be able to support and shore up each other's' weaknesses.

I know there are people who don't pay attention to the ask.fm so I figured it'd be good to post in thread.
>>
>>35189666
I was somewhat iffy about the heavy armor, but realistically once we've de-cloaked, we're GENERALLY inferior in terms of maneuverability. It makes sense to double down on defense and survivability.

Building fighters, I think not usefully without something like ions drives, I think. Our current fighter engine should only work in atmospheres. Still haven't actually made one of those, amusingly.
>>
>>35189660
Sticking it on a warrior variant is actually bad.

Warriors and seeker carriers have very different strengths and weaknesses that sorta conflict if you smoosh them together.

A Seeker Pod adaptation is a large, porous sac. Which sounds very vulnerable to damage and doesn't sound like it can be armored, either.

Seekers don't need line of sight to target the enemy, while a warrior's normal projectiles do.

So whatever drone is launching seekers, it's best suited to do so from behind cover, while warriors are best suited for shooting at enemies directly.

A warrior with a seeker pod in line of sight would be more vulnerable to damage via the pod.

So I figure it's best just to have a seeker pod on legs that hides behind cover while the warriors do their thing.
>>
>>35189674
I lost my link to that, mind being a doll and delivering providence upon the unfortunate?

Regarding the frigate design. Questdrone responded to questions about Point Defense

Q:
>How do Cyclotrons fair vs Autocannons in terms of point defense? Does each have their own advantage depending upon the target and are otherwise comparable in effectiveness. If so, can you please give a quick rundown of said situations.

A:
>They both have advantages and disadvantages. With regards to point defense, as in intercepting missiles and destroying fighters, the autocannons win out by far, but that's not to say that the cyclotrons don't fill a useful role in an auxiliary hardpoint. With their low rate of fire they are not as good at intercepting incoming missiles or fighters, but when up against larger targets they can lay down a barrage of low damage, sensor disrupting fire to reduce the target ship's accuracy, making them less likely to hit your ship with unguided weapons. If you want some good old fashioned flak though, there's no better way to go then autocannons with explosive rounds.

>The main reason the weapons all cost the same is because none of them are direct upgrades. They all have some kind of useful niche purpose that makes them useful, but at the cost of the use of another weapon type.

Q:
>Due to them both being useful, would it be possible to split the hardpoints between Cyclotrons and Autocannons? If so, it would obviously result in reduced maximum effectiveness but result in a somewhat more balanced ship.

A:
>Spit the same hardpoint? No, I think at that point ship design would become far too complex to design and keep track of.

>>35189728
no problem. Its in the OP as well http://ask.fm/Questdrone

>>35189744
Except for the exact same upkeep, you can have two drones: a seeker pod one, and a warrior to guard it.

Either way it'll have a big soft vulnerable spot in the seeker pod, even if the two are combined.
>>
>>35189711
Well so far we haven't had much need for aerial fighter craft. The only ships that regularly move through the atmosphere are transports from larger FTL ships. And we've got particle beam bunkers for those.

Maybe we could construct a simple rocket propelled ship, but then I again that would be all but impossible to cloak
>>
Does anyone think we should start scouting out a location in the Desert for a Hive Compund?

Also, did we ever find another location for are hive after we decided to search some more?
>>
>>35189786
Still losing out on limb cost having two drones instead of one. Unless the seeker pod is literally JUST a seeker pod, in which case it has to be dragged in and out of battles which is a potential risk and probably slows the bearer down more than having it be designed into their biology.
>>
>>35189832
>Still losing out on limb cost having two drones instead of one.
Not true.

Seeker Pod 10
Sprint Legs 1

11N upfront, but 5N upkeep. Which is the same as the increase in upkeep of 5N by adding it to a warrior.
>>
>>35189609
If we could get a shocktrooper to use their quantum brain to think for an entire group of these things they would be devastating. An entire squad of giant murderbugs that are capable of thinking tactically for themselves.
>>
>>35189660
>>35189713
>>35189832

Because Seekers cost at least 10N, whatever drone has them is going to be expensive nonetheless.
I imagined the seeker as more of a Grenadier type unit.

Seeker Drone
Olfactory: Basic
Acoustic: Basic
Radio: Basic 1N
Psionic: Basic
Mandibles: Combat 1N
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Strength 1N
Legs: Sprint 1N
Utility: Seeker Pod 10N (10 seekers, Incendiary)
Carapace: Combat 3N10M
Size: Medium
Cost: 18N10M
Upkeep: 9N

Its based on the warrior with a seeker pod. I honestly can't think of a way to make these cost-effective. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

>>35189845
That could work too. But it'll be very vulnerable without armor.
>>
>>35189786
The thing with that though it doesn't matter if it gets damaged. IT WILL GROW BACK. The only thing that would happen is the drone wouldn't be able to use the pod until it healed.
>>
>>35189642
While medical scans are far more detailed, and thus far more difficult to hide from, yes, you could use camo to hide from medical scans. A full body checkup like a CAT scan would still detect some abnormality, but it would appear as a large tumor or cyst as opposed to a giant, squirming insect monster hugging your kidneys.
That is, until they go in to remove it thinking it just a tumor.
That is a scene I would love to write, so very much.

>>35189816
You are still searching, but with the cloud cover hampering any effort to search from orbit, it may take some time.

>>35189888
Can parasite drones wriggle around and attack humans on it's own without a host?
If so then the surgeon is going to be pretty traumatized.
>>
>>35189888
That is a scene I'd love to read. We can fit the parasite drone with an explosive sac right? Just in case a person with one inside is captured. We wouldn't want them getting anything more than a quick glimpse.
>>
>>35189864
Alternatively, we could stick the pod on a flying drone. But it'll be slow, noticeable, and especially vulnerable to damage, I think.

One thing to generally not is that our wings are NOT sneaky. They're loud, especially going top speeds. Not so bad for smaller drones, obviously.
>>
>>35189919
Yes, but only If we build it to be.
>>
>>35189865
If you combine a seeker pod and a warrior, then if you use it like a warrior -- charging out of cover to fire on the enemy--that upkeep for the seeker pod is wasted.

If you use that seeker-warrior as a seeker pod, hiding behind cover, that upkeep for the warrior adaptations is wasted.

If you have two drones, each specialized to their role, they can do both simultaneously. Or both can hold back and one can guard the other. It's more flexible to specialize.

Wait, could a shocktrooper lead a squad of differentiated units and psionically maintain a link between all of them? If it was capable of tracking targets through the eyes of one of the warriors assigned to it, could it use that information to give a seeker pod drone a target?

I'm basically asking if it could use the advantages of it's quantum brain to lead a group of standard or unique warriors as a single unit.
>>
>>35189929
We could add a Rim Jet to make it fast. I've designed a Drone design that does just that and it blinds into the sky.
>>
>>35189941
Not in all cases. The way I'm looking at it is that seeker pods are valuable. Not just in terms of nutrients, but in on-field tactical value, they are important. Slapping armor on that drone provides a tangible, if hopefully unneeded, advantage to the survivability and retention of that battlefield resource throughout engagements. While, yes, deploying them defensively.

The cost isn't even that much, honestly.
>>
>>35189956
What?

Why would that happen. The queen leads them. The queen uses the senses of all her drones to guide the other drones. They're all networked through the queen -- or through a thinker if the queen isn't relayed to them.
>>
>>35189941
Or you could have a warrior firing at them and releasing the Seekers at the same time, because noting stop him from doing that.
>>
>>35189956
We already do that automatically with every one of our drones. Sorry.

>>35189978
Considered a Ram Jet aerodynamic drone with seeker pods for air bombing support. Probably not worth the cost though unless we're entering full-blown invasion territory.
>>
>>35189956

I think he meant the combat bonus that a Shocktrooper's Quantum Brain gives to surrounding drones. IIRC, QD said that one Shocktrooper can provide a bonus to around 10 drones
>>
>>35189983
Then you can be very careful about making sure the warriors are guarding the cover well while they fire at the enemy nearby. It's basically just as effective.

Preventing the enemy from getting line of sight is a better use of the same resources than adding armor.

>>
>>35189995
>>35190006
Yes, but she dictate thinker drones to lead drones outside of her range on her behalf. That's why the default option for space pods and the like used to be a thinker instead of a psionic relay.

Think of it, those quantum brains in the shocktroopers are dedicated to thinking tactically on the battlefield. If they could use those to order other drones, as all thinkers are able to, we could have large groups of warriors able to fight with more finesse than just rushing the enemy. As this guy stated >>35190012
we could spread it out to up to 10 drones. We could have squads of warriors and maybe a seeker pod drone using their combined weaponry and strengths to exploit any week points in an enemy formation or ship. This is literally what the shocktroopers were originally conceived as doing.
>>
>>35190113
What?

Rounding only saves like 1N anyway.

And the biological interface costs 20N for a reason, to make small drones with it not stupidly cheap, so it already seems well compensated for.
>>
>>35190097

>>35190109

>>35190149
I have received that question a lot on the ask.fm, and have avoided answering it because I was still not sure about it.

I will say that a small drone can have an egg sac, but would only be able to lay small drones, and any attempt to hide it from medical exams would be out of the question. The host would suffer from malnutrition, and once the drone actually starts producing other drones there would be noticeable swelling, as well as fever and other flu-like symptoms as the body panics over having a giant, swolen bug inside it.
>>
>>35190191
Still, the point stands that we could use them to buff up other drones in combat situations.

>>
>>35190191
>IIRC, QD said that one Shocktrooper can provide a bonus to around 10 drones
Word of god man, unless QD says this incorrect I'm inclined to believe it.
So I'm starting to think a drone carrying a seeker pod might be a good idea. We can have a nearby stormtrooper order it to remain behind cover while it sends out explosive berry birds to it's targets.
>>
>>35190219
Not because of quantum brains, no. Our warriors already gain bonuses from sensory-laden drone support. That is a thing that explicitly happens.

Thinker/quantum brain support can come from ANYWHERE within our psychic range.
>>
>>35190211
So possible, but with lots of limitations that would make it much less useful in most situations.
It would be very limited in how many it could produce at any given time, and would still be large enough to be easy to find.
So it would have a small, but utterly terrifying niche.
>>

Holy shit, the bonuses shocktroopers give are from their senses. They provide more for the actual battle leaders (us and support Thinkers directing the moves of all of our troops from across our vast psychic network) to work with. Better situational awareness means bonuses to battle efforts. Fancy that.

There is nothing inherently or especially special/unique about shock troopers and they empathically are not leaders. They are /drones/. Drones that provide useful support functions, but drones nonetheless.

New drone design proposal

Parasite
Mandible: Biological interface 20
Claw: Hypodermic 2
Arm: Strength 1(?)
Acid glands 1
Quantum brain 4
Carapace: Adaptive camouflage 8, Mimetic skin 2
Legs: Sprint 1
Size: Small
Cost: 9N
Upkeep: 4N

This drone would be capable of being surgically implanted into a host body, and would be capable of producing and injecting a wide range of chemicals and compounds, both tested and otherwise, as well as self-destructing upon discovery or capture. With the inclusion of a quantum brain it would be capable of learning the behavior of its host and adapting to it on its own, even when outside the range of the hive. Nothing short of a full physical examination and extensive scan would detect the drone, although it may appear as a slight abnormality or growth.

Correct. The main, and just about only difference between a shock trooper and a group of warriors with sniffer and thinker support is that if they were cut off from your network the shock troopers would keep fighting, while the warriors and sniffers would slip into a coma.

This also means they can be sent on fire and forget missions, with orders to self-destruct upon mission completion or imminent capture.

So shocktroopers are more or less a seeker/warrior that can double jump and is capable of thinking for itself. It's like four different niche roles rolled into one.

That's just pointlessly expensive and we'd be better off just having three seperate drone designs fill the same role. Heck'uva lot cheaper on nutrients too. Perhaps it's time to mothball this particular drone variety.
>>
>>35190514
I've thought the same thing ever since they were designed in the first place. They were a poor design.

Or at least keeping their numbers at 20. It might be useful to have some on hand just in case, in the remote future, in a scenario we don't anticipate, we need drones with quantum brains.

It's rather unlikely, with cloaked pods that can extend our range.

Yeah just replace them with winged warriors.

Then have some other warriors that are dense bundles of sensors. I don't think they need smell though. That's not so useful in combat. For tracking we have the Flies.

The best thing about them is the Quantum Brain as they Learn and then share the memories about what they learned. Like during are raid on off world military action, they saw what grenades could do and then utilized said information to better are assault.

I could go for the wings too, really. I just assume Gliders basically don't interfere with armor at all, and I imagine they're less noisy while in use. I don't think our wing designs facilitate silent gliding, but I could be wrong and they're a pure upgrade in every way over gliders.
>>
>>35190630
Not really. Basic wings is essentially just a retractable glider made from chitin. A warrior with basic wings would be able to glide from great heights silently, although they would have no grace to speak of and would not be able to gain any altitude. More like falling with style, really.

>>35190612
Seekers can be loaded with all manner of chemicals, even gas. Other methods could be the subject of future research and adaptation efforts.

>>35190653
Nothing's ever completely impossible, although in many cases having more drones in the jungle could lead to less severe outcomes.

>>
>>35190753

A Fly costs 9N 1M
A Warrior with medium wings costs 10N 10M
Embedding flies in combat and upgrading warriors with wings would probably be more cost effective in the long-run.

However, the one advantage the Shocktrooper has is it's quantum brain.
I say that we just only use the Shocktroopers as they were originally designed for. As a sort or Strike Force that needs to hit hard and fast, and behind enemy lines if necessary.

In short, keep the Shocktroopers as a sort of special forces, few in number and not as frontline units like We've been doing mostly.

Basic Gliders would be even less needed. Think of it this way:
You're attacking a walled compound with 10 Warriors. 5 are normal and 5 have wings They cost a total of 90N 100M. The 5 jump up the walls and are evenly matched by the defenders. It could go either way

Now, if ALL of them had wings. They could easily overpower the defenders, thus making a victory easier and most likely lessen casualties on our sides. The difference is only 10N.
Of course this is all just conjecture. But at least i'm trying to explain my argument.
>>
>>35191212
I'd rather drop them from an invisible shuttle/corvette.
>>
>>35190975
>Upgrade warriors with Moderate wings (2N cost, 1N upkeep)
>Upgrade all ships with damage control (15N 20M, 7N upkeep for corvettes)
This will delay the production of your frigates slightly as your other ships are refitted.

>>35191112
They are useful for detecting sources of radiation, such as power generators or other advanced technology. The fact that other races use radio so extensively is a bonus, making it very difficult to mount any kind of sneak attack against your hive without total radio silence.
>>
>>35191177
Odd. Anyway, I think we should make a dedicated close-quarters bruiser variant when we've got the tech to make it viable, while upgrading our standard warriors to something a bit more tactically flexible.

Really want to crack Lyle's combat armor open for a melee weapon upgrade.
>>
>>35191103
I, for the record, second making a seperate new variant. When we're building a swarm of hundreds of warriors that 2N cost will build up fast.
>>
>>35191230

>>
>>35191247
I think they'll be worth it. Lets say you're deploying a swarm of hundreds to invade, say, a city. Basic and moderate can both jump out of a corvette without issue. Only the moderate wing bearers can easily regain a height advantage over their enemy. Basic wings are useful less often, in fewer situations. Moderate wings should also speed charges a bit, get to melee faster, when there's room.
>>
>>35191265
It's allows them to be more mobile then standard Warriors all the time which is just better.
>>
>>35191290
Except moderate costs upkeep all the time in all situations, and is useful rarely.

>>
>>35191585
Always a pleasure, thanks for playing!

As for the drone discussion, I think I mentioned it on the ask.fm, but you could go with any combat philosophy you want. By default, the hive's strength is fielding lots of drones that are individually weaker than the enemy forces, but use vast numbers and super-organism level cooperation to win the day. With your adaptations you could swing into the other end of the spectrum and create very expensive drones that are individually overwhelming. Once you get to a point of mimicking the durability and combat effectiveness of a human in power armor you would have an incredibly expensive, but very powerful drone, but the downside is that it would hurt a lot more to let it die.
At the moment one of the hive's greatest advantages is that each individual can die without suffering any drop in morale, much like the Unity, while Humans spend lots of resources to increase the survivability of individual soldiers that each are costly to replace, and cause political and moral fallout when lost.

You may lose a dozen warriors to take out a position of five Union troops, for example, but you would just replace them within the week. The Union, however, would have to conscript, train, and equipped five more troops as well as suffer the hit to morale as the news reaches other units.

No need to combine things when we can have modular helper drones that can go where they're needed.

I don't think I'm comfortable with that image anon
>>
>>35191759
But this isn't going to be a combat drone. Its a healing tank on legs. And the needles are an extra 1N. Depending on how that's rounded off that won't even factor into the upkeep.
>>
>>35191754
Can it feed nutrients or chemicals to Subjects as is? If not add Biological Interface.
>>
>>35191754
>Y
>>
>>35191773
That would still cost more in the long run and the Small drone is the size of a fly. It is incapable of moving sufficient amounts of air to speak.
>>
>>35191758
>>35191763
The tank includes a full surgical suite, including feeding tube, respirator, and organic versions of all manner of other medical equipment.
Recommend sedation prior to immersion.
>>
>>35191754
add: Blade: Hypodermic
Arms: Dexterity
>>
>>35191789
So it does do everything a can biological interface do. Can we please add a vocalizer and hypodermic needles?
>>
>>35191788
It would cost the same, actually.

a Small Speaker would have 1N upkeep. Only it wouldn't have to stay to one tank all the time, like grafting a speaker thing onto the tank itself would, at 2N cost / 1N upkeep.

> incapable of moving sufficient amounts of air to speak.
They aren't the size of a fly? They have a minimum size of 4 cm.

And they can be bigger yet still qualify as Small.
>>
>>35191775
Actually hypodermic needles are 2N, they can't be rounded away.

You'd also be adding the arms to support them presumably.
>>
>>35191810
No it wouldn't. Everything in this post is impossible.
>>
>>35191775
Actually why would it need hypodermic needles? It has a full suite for performing surgery, it can already take tissue samples.
>>
>>35191823
Your face is impossible.

>Speaker – (1) – 4
That's the current speaker.

Multiply by .25 and a Small Speaker costs 1N upkeep.

Read the freakin' pastebin man.
>Small: This covers any drone a meter or less in size down to a minimum of roughly four centimeters. They can equip no weapons or armor due to their small size, but are faster, more nimble, and have a natural bonus to stealth efforts over their larger brethren. The total cost of any small drone is .25 of listed price.
It can be as large as 1 meter. Where the hell are you getting your info?
>>
>>35191830
Because using the tank requires that the subject be sedated, and that, along with the process of filling the tank and getting it going will take time. If we want a quick blood sample or administer some drugs, the needles can do so much, much more efficiently and quickly.
>>
>>35191789
Okay so just a tank on legs, if it can do everything already as part of that.
>>
>>35191836
agree

>>35191823
Sorry anon you're retarded
>>
>>35191850
I think by "going under" it means before they get submerged. You can jab them with the surgical anesthesia needle that's part of the tank, presumably, before beginning the procedure.

I mean that's probably how the humans do it.
>>
>>35191836
We actually have 3 speakers now....

QD you really gotta update your copypasta for new thread.

>>35191754
Lay 20, whatever.
>>
>>35191864
Yes exactly, a needle. That is exactly, what we're arguing over.
>>
>>35191898
There are needles and shit as part of the regen tank already.

It performs surgery, it's designed to. of course it can sedate the victim-patient. You can stick the human in the tank and jab them before dunking their head below the fluids' surface.
>>
>>35191853
>>35191830
>>35191818

Look, I just want to point out that the differences we're arguing about cost a total of 5N. In a unit that costs over 50N. A unit that we will scarcely use in all likelyhood.

Just a reminder we also just gave every single warrior Moderate wings for 2N. We have hundreds of warriors and will need many more as time goes on. The difference to the tank drone is tiny, not even a drop in the bucket by the standards of the hive. Why is laying several entirely new drones for more nutrients desirable for such a specialized niche?
>>
>>35191864
This is correct, and even then sedation is "optional, but highly recommended" due mostly to the fact that it's essentially a person sized insect version of a pitcher plant filled with needles and giant insect legs on the inside. It is perfectly capable of diagnosing and treating injuries and illnesses without putting the subject under, but it is also safe to assume that unless they are sedated they will flip the hell out.
>>
>>35191911
Okay so it can do everything it needs to as part of the tank.

Also yes that is beautifully horrifying. Can't wait. Lay away.
>>
>>35191329

What if they are INSIDE a large building with lots of space and multiple levels?

Y'know, like an Underground mall or any number of structures in the FUTURE where enhanced mobility wouldn't be a detriment.

It's hard to hold the high ground when the enemy can just fly up to you.
>>
>>35191911
lay them.
>>
>>35191911
And this is why we should include the vocalizer. The drone can actually tell the subject what is going on before it can damage the unit. Even give the poor bastard a diagnosis.
>>
>>35191993
We can just tell them via the speakers.

It's not like we're doing surgery terribly often.
>>
>>35191911
Lay 20.

Okay, so to learn more extensively and master human biology, QD, would we just have them in exploratory surgery for a couple days, or is just having a parasite inside them going to learn enough?
>>
>>35191911
Who knew all those threads on /d/ were of doctors.
>>
>>35192016
Do we really need 20? These things cost 51N a pop, the upkeep alone will cost 500N. These are not drones that will be used often. With 5 of them we could heal all of human captives in less than a week.
