>> Doctor Savage’s School for Gifted Youngsters <<

… 30 percent?

Once the school bell rang and all the students around you started packing up to leave, you quickly trotted up to the Professor’s desk. “Um, excuse me, Professor Jones?” He quickly wipes his glasses down with a clean rag and looks at you, attentive. “Um, could you explain why I got a 30 on this assignment?” you ask.

The Professor takes the assignment from you, a fifteen page essay on the Lost City of Z. It took you days just researching that, and the field travel too! Admittedly, you did have to go there because there was trouble that Operator #5 reported and it did… might have sunken into the ground during the commotion, but you saw it! The Lost City of Z exists! Well, did exist.

He nods, putting his glasses back on. “Yeah, Lost City of Z, doesn’t exist.”

You blink. “I-… excuse me?” He narrows his eyes at you. Oh boy. “I mean- I just… really? I was there, last week even!”

You sigh. “Okay, I can’t prove I was there, but this-“

“Miss Hunter.” He hands the papers back to you, then begins walking over to his desk. “I am here in the business of evidence in research, history, and archaeology. I did not see a single cited source, no footnotes, no annotated bibliography, nothing to indicate you did any research. I gave you a 30 because I know you’re too honest to actually plagiarize.”

You shrug. “Well. I suppose. But-“

“No buts,” he says as he sits down. “Listen, if you want to be an archaeologist, you have to understand that you are going to have spend a lot of time in the books. Now, I know you are in Doctor Savage’s good graces here, but this is an academic institution. You are here to learn. That means you are at the mercy of the greatest monster man has ever invented: The American Education System.”

And what a terrible monster it is.

Actually, relooking, she really does need to shape up her research paper writing skills. Even if she did go there and didn't bring back evidence she still could have used her research in finding the place as references. Shoddy work, Liberty.

> “Alright, thank you, Professor.”

You sigh, feeling a great row in the pit of your stomach. Your mom’s not going to like this. Then again, your mom probably isn’t even aware of where you even get any sort of higher education. “Alright, thank you, Professor Jones.”

He nods. “Right, Miss Hunter. Listen, I can refer you to Sir Mortimer Wheeler’s works in excavation, he is an absolute pioneer in the art of making entire forts come out as if they were built yesterday. But you need to get into the habit of citation. Without it, nobody will believe you if the second coming of Christ were to happen.”

You furrow your brow, glaring at him a little as you walk out. “I should consider myself lucky I got this paper back on time I suppose.” He quirks his brow at you as reach the door. “Then again, you and me probably have similar pursuits, Professor.

He waves you off, putting a huge book down on his desk to read. “Out with you, and if you can, please let the other girls in class know I’m not looking for any kind of relationship at the moment.” He starts flipping through as you leave.

Doctor Savage’s School for Gifted Youngsters was founded on the principle that today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. So, Doctor Savage put together a bunch of funds, built a school on the outskirts of New York City, and here you are. It is very common to run into fellow co-workers here, but for all intents and purposes, it’s just a regular High School for above-average boys and girls.

As you walk through the terrace under the shade of the trees, you pass by boys cramming for their exams, girls gossiping in the corners, and Professors running off to class. It has been some time since you last saw Doctor Savage.

You blink, looking down at your feet to see a little black cat-like creature walking besides you. “Oh, hey Kirby.”

>> KIRBY <<
>> The American Messenger of Magic <<

“Hello, Liberty. I assume you are well.” He looks up at you with his stark red eyes.

“Sure,” you say. “Is there something you need me for?”

“Posonby and Shelby have been livid over the Shard’s near-burglarizing but I have managed to calm their nerves.”

You stop in place, then look down at Kirby with a hard glare. “You realize how crazy I look talking to a cat?”

“I have considered the judgment of others and have deemed it irrelevant,” he says. “Perhaps you will accompany me, Posonby and Shelby would like your assurance that the Shard is in safe hands and it would reinforce your relations with us Messengers.”

>>35176174
>Not now. Sumire and Rana wanted to meet for lunch today.

>>35176201
Thats was my point, he can complain about the lack of evidence of having been there, but cititizations don't do that.
>>
>>35176174
>Make it quick

Also, 1939? Ain't that cute, she's going for her MRS. Kidding, of course. Assuming the sexism of the age is a tertiary thing at best in the setting.
>>
>>35176174
>> Alright, but we better make it quick.
Fine, but I won't like it
>>
>>35176243
... Okay, ignoring that you really didn't make a point there, the other issue is that Liberty didn't make ANY citations whatsoever. Citations help with fact checking, so that anyone looking at her research can look at what she referenced and see if they see the same conclusions, or even check to see if it's a reputable or reliable source.
>>
>>35176363
But she didn't use any reference, she did original research, which is something completly different.
Thats was the point, she can't make cititizations, because she didn't cite anyone, because no one had researched the topic before.
>>
>>35176395
Where did it say she did all the initial research? All I saw is she did some field work.
>>
>>35176419
Since he says it doesn't exist, obviously no reputable work has reported about it so far, meaning she must have been the first one.
>>
Rolled 1 (1d2)

1. for Going to Messengers
2. for Going to lunch
>>
>>35176479
But then how did she find it? I doubt she just happened to stumble on it. At some point, somewhere, someone else pointed her in the right direction.
>>
>>35176479
That's s pretty big inferance. She could have cited speculative texts, referenced previously-researched clues or hints to its existence. Besides, if she (a student) had actually found it, someone else would have gone out all but immediately to conduct professional field research.
>>
>>35176479
She still has nothing backing it up, and she did do research into it but failed to cite what she used as resources. She might as well be writing a pulp novel.

... Hm...
>>
>>35176526
>Admittedly, you did have to go there because there was trouble that Operator #5 reported and it did…
>>
>>35176537
Well yes, that she didn't bring evidence is why I voted her to accept it. But the cititization thing was nonsense. Because the works she probably used were apparently no reliable sources, which have no lace in a cititization, since the point of those is that the reader can look into them himself. Which obviously isn't possible if she used some ancient text she procured god knows where and is now locked away. Which is pretty likely whith this kind of thing.
>>
>>35176544
And how did #5 know where it was? If your sources are too secret to cite, don't write the paper.
>>
>>35176645
>If your sources are too secret to cite, don't write the paper.
Obviously, thats the part she didn't understood.
But requesting cititization for original research is just stupid, no one does that unless you are referencing someone in the text.
It only requires material of evidence.
>>
>>35176576
The citation thing is not nonsense because, as an academic and as a teacher, her professor has to be able to verify what she's written to ensure honesty.

That said, if she writes a book or an article about her experience, then someone else can cite her for a paper of her own.
>>
>>35176691
>It only requires material of evidence.
And here's the fucking problem: she HAS no evidence. If she did, then that counts as a source. If she doesn't, then she needs SOMETHING to back her claims.
>>

> Alright, but we better make it quick.

“Fine, Kirby.” You bend down and let Kirby run up your arm and then sit down on your shoulder. “But let’s make it quick, I don’t want to be late for lunch. Sumire and Rana seemed a bit adamant on meeting me for lunch today.”

Kirby nods. “Perhaps that is because she wants you to pay for her lunch as usual.”

You smirk. “Heh. That figures.”

With that, you begin the walk to find a phonebooth. On your way, a skinny little lad your age runs over. It’s Lenny, the kid with the squeaky voice.. “Hey, Christine!” He holds up a book and a pen, apparently in a rush. “Listen, I got a math test in ten minutes, could you tell me how to factor-“

“No, Lenny.” You walk past him. Lenny stands there, dumbfounded, then sort of kicks the ground in defeat.

You find yourself a phone booth on campus, then walk in. You hit the buttons 1776, and then you both wait a moment. Soon, the glass in the booth tints over, then the floor begins descending downward.

In the time the Strategic Services Office has operated, they have established numerous bases around the US and abroad in allied countries. One of these bases happen to be beneath the school itself. And you wonder why you keep running into Kirby and some of your fellow Magical Girls here. Soon the floor stops and you find yourself at a metal door which you push open with little issue.

And you walk into the small lobby where agents pass you by to and fro their place of work. At the desk is the secretary, young woman by the name of Julia. You smile and wave at Julia, and she does the same as you pass on by. With a Messenger on your shoulder, they all know you have business to attend to.

“And that is why the Shard must be in our care! The humans have no way of handling it safely!” You stand in the center of a large amphitheater-like room. > “It is safe in our hands.”

You cross your arms. “It is safe in our hands. Doctor Savage has already relocated the Shard to his hidden research base the Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic.”

“Pardon,” says Posonby quickly. “What was that?”

You nod. “Yes, he calls it the Fortress of Solitude.”

“What a stupid name,” says Posonby. “What makes him think that will catch on?”

“That’s not the topic here,” you say. “The point is that we have it under control. I need not remind you that as Messengers, you are playing a support role in all of this. We cooperate with you all at our discretion. This Shard affects us just as much as it affects you all. So do not worry, it is safe. I have known Doctor Savage for many years and he would not make a mistake like he did again. He is a man who learns.”

The Messengers all look at each other, apparently in psychic thought. It lasts only for a few moments before Kirby says, “We have come to the deliberation that we do indeed consider it safe in the SSO’s hands. Thank you for your time, Liberty.”

You nod. “Alright, Kirby. May I go?”

“You may,” says Lazenby. “May the Eternal Hope protect you.”

You step out of the phone booth in good spirits. “Well, what do you think, Kirby?”

Kirby sits on your shoulder. “I believe my colleagues do have faith in the Strategic Services Office. However, I must admit I feel some apprehension over it as well. If we Messengers had more control over the magic we distribute, perhaps we would better guard it ourselves.”

You nod. “But you don’t. That’s why you have the Magical Girls.”

“Precisely, you are learning our history very well, Liberty,” he says. He drops down onto the ground and begins walking off. “I will see you soon.”

You check your watch.

> Get your motorcycle, you haven’t taken it out for a spin lately

Alright, Mom, time to see if your training has paid off. You put on your gloves and a helmet and quickly mount up on your bike. It is a Harley-Davidson RL 45, one of the bikes that saved the company from the Great Depression. You kick it into life, then it erupts in a roar of engine and smoke. It vibrates beneath you, puttering and sputtering like a little dog.

Motorcycles, you can see why your Mom likes them.

After speeding through traffic and nearly getting pulled over by the cops, you managed to find yourself at the café you three were to have lunch at. You hope you didn’t accidentally stand them up, but one look through window and…

Yeah, they’re there. Talking at their own little table. Of course Sumire has bought the most food. Her lunch could feed an entire country for a week. You walk in, the bell signaling your arrival and walk over to them.

Rana smiles at you. “Hey, Christine!”

You sit down, frowning at Sumire. “What’s with all the food?”

She swallows hard, sighing a bit. She grins cutely at you. “Hey, a girl has to eat, Libby. You’re late by the way.” She points to your plate, which is more or less just a simple ham sandwich. “There’s yours. You’re paying the bill by the way.”

You look at Sumire’s plate. Several sandwiches, slices of apples, two drinks of bevo, what looks to be a glass of egg cream, Eggs Benedict, and clam chowder.

Hmph. At least she knows not to starve herself.

You flag down a waiter. “Excuse me, waiter!” He walks over, a notepad and pen ready. “Could I have a salad, some fries, and a bevo, please?” He nods, writing that down and heading into the kitchen. You can’t imagine why a place would still serve bevo with alcohol becoming legal again, but then again you love bevo. “So, anything new going on, guys?”

Rana smiles, holding up a newspaper flashing the dashing mug of Doctor Savage and his few good men, in front of a prototype pusher prop airplane. “Doctor Savage just unveiled his new airplane, the Spirit! It’s projected to break the Hughes H-1 Racer’s record by over fifteen miles an hour!”

Sumire nods. “That is very interesting, Rana. Do go on.”

Rana grins, bouncing in her seat. “Okay! So basically-“

“I was kidding.” Rana’s grin drops into a heavy frown. “Anyway, I have been up to stuff myself!”

“Oh? Have you finally enrolled in the school?” you say. You have been trying desperately to get Sumire to enroll into Doctor Savage’s school. Rana already has the excuse in that she already goes to school in the inner-city, but Sumire does not.

“Pffft.” Sumire rolls her eyes as she takes a bottle of bevo off a waiter’s platter. “No. You remember Deladrier right?”

You nod. Jeanine Deladrier, Magical Girl Siren. “Yeah…” You quickly take the bottle back and place it on his platter without him noticing. “Why?”

“I am working to get contracted back into her new Security Company!” she says.

You narrow your eyes. Hold on. “Wait. Really?” You cross your arms, leaning back in your seat as the waiter puts down your lunch for you. “You’re leaving the SSO?”

“Yeah,” says Sumire. Rana blinks in surprise. “Figured I can get a bigger paycheck with the French bitch rather than stuff it here with you Americans.” She shrugs as she chews on an apple. “That’s the gist of it.”

Sumire scoots closer to you, tilting her head towards you. “Are you mad?”

“A little,” you say. “First off, Jeanine hates your guts. Secondly, we’ve worked together for ages! Months even! You don’t think to tell me about this!? I thought we were friends!”

Sumire smirks. “We’re business partners.”

Rana looks down. “I think we’re friends.”

“Come on, Sumire, don’t tell me all these months of us saving each other, it was all about a paycheck.” You lean forward on the table, glaring at her. “What, do you need more money or something? I can just give you some of my paycheck. Hell, I can convince Operator #5 to work something out.”

“Libby, please, don’t be so hasty.” Sumire bites down on her apple again, chewing. “I go where the money flows. It’s a simple business.”

“What would your Messenger think if he could see you now?” you ask.

“Heck if I care about him,” she says. “He’s dead.” Rana simply sits there, as if waiting for the parents to stop arguing. Sumire continues with, “Besides, Libby, I patched things over with Jeanine. She and I are now buddy buddy! We are tighter than a… describe a chastity belt to me.”

“No.” You groan deeply, shaking your head. “Look. I- We’ve worked together so long and you’re just going to leave us like this?”

“At least I’m giving you the courtesy of letting you know,” she says. “I don’t normally do this!”

You take your hand, and give her the biggest puppy dog eyes you can. She is not just going to leave you like this. She looks at you, surprised. “Sumire. Don’t leave.”

Sumire looks down at your hands, at your Soul Ring in particular, then sighs, shaking her head. Her smile is completely gone. “I’d… you know I would rather not but- The money, Libby! I just-“

“You don’t need money. You need friends. Like me and Rana.”

Rana smiles, waving her hand a little. “Hi, I’m still here.”

“Christine, come on…” She pouts a bit, wiggling her lip. “You know this was going to happen one day or another.”

“I refuse to accept that,” you say.

Sumire sighs. “Give me a day or two and then we’ll see if I actually leave, alright?” You smile a little at that. That’s a start at least. She frowns frustratedly, no longer having much of an appetite. Rana smiles, going back to read the newspaper.

Good, we’re all happy faces again. That’s nice!

> “So, any news in the paper, Rana?”

You look to Rana as you start scarfing down in the food. “Anything in the news, Rana?”

Rana flips through a page. “Says here there’s a new Woolworth’s opening up in town but other than that, nothing new… Oh!” She places down the newspaper, looking at you happily. “You remember our old ship, the Sparrow right?”

“Yeah,” you say. “The one Sumire wrecked a few weeks back.”

“It was a storm!” says Sumire quickly. “And we were trying to dodge planes at the same time!”

“You hit the only mountain for miles,” you say. “Anyway, what about it?”

“Doctor Savage has been modifying it a bit back at the Fortress of Solitude,” says Rana. “It should be ready soon!” She hugs the paper close, giddy. “I just can’t wait! He’s apparently planning on some newfangled Atomic engine to power the thing!”

Sumire sighs. “That will be neat I am sure.”

You check the time. “Ah, I gotta get back to class.” You stand up quickly then quickly unzip your purse. “How much was all of this?”

“About fifty three dollars,” says Sumire. You glare at her. Fifty three dollars!? “What!? I figure if I’d leave, I might as well have a nice expensive last supper with you,” she says quickly.

“That won’t matter because you ain’t leaving,” you say as you write down “Put it on my tab – L”. You know the owner here at least, he’ll know what that means. You start out the door, “I’ll see you two at home.” They wave goodbye to you.

The bell rings with classes over. You stand up out of your seat and start on out of the classroom. You whistle innocently as you start walking, only to get your shoulder pushed. “Huh?” Walking next to you know is a pair of girls, both of you very well-known to you in fact.

“Heya, Christine.”

“Hello.”

Henrietta happens to be one of the more veteran Magical Girls of the SSO, a trainer of the others. She has been working tirelessly with Anneliese to get her up to speed, mostly with how the SSO works. The Minnesotan girl has amazing patience. “Soo, Christine, we was looking into doing some boxing practice, ya? Fitting to join us?”

Studying can wait, it’s time for boxing!

Down in the SSO Bunker, there is a gym for Magical Girls where Henrietta trains the Magical Girls. She leads you down to this gym, where already several Magical Girls lift, train, and stretch. They all exercise for the next job or the next mission for their part in the Magical Girl Division of the SSO.

“Ooh! Grace!” Henrietta walks up to Grace Belle, lifting a dumb bell at a bench. “How are ya today?”

“Doing good, Stringer,” says Grace.

>> GRACE BELLE <<
>> Mecha Magical Girl Fortress <<

“Alrighty!” Henrietta smiles warmly as she leads you two to the boxing ring. You’ve already gone and stripped down to simple tank tops and knickerbockers for this. “Now, Christine! Anneliese here has been training exceptionally hard. Do go easy on her, ya?”

You climb into the ring, wrapping your hands up. “Alright, Henrietta. I’ll go easy on her, just this once.”

Anneliese glares at you as she steps in. “I will not go easy on you, Christine.” She goes to her corner and raises her fists. Good form, good starting stance. Henrietta simply decides to referee at the side of the ring.

You raise your fists as well. “Ding, ding!” says Henrietta. You and Anneliese step closer to each other. Anneliese strafes to your right. Normally that would call for a few quick jabs in response, but you’re playing it safely. Gotta let her have her day.

Big mistake.

Anneliese pulls her arm back and smashes you down to the ground. You smack the floor with a mighty thud, completely out of it. Holy hells bells that was a hit! You quickly regain yourself, and stand back up, surprised. “Whoa!”

“I did say I was not going easy,” she says. Girl must lift.

She rushes at you. “AAAAHHHH!”

You both give each powerful crosses to the cheek. Sweat explodes off your faces, and your teeth sting in pain as they cut the inside of your mouth.

You both fall to the ground, dazed.

Henrietta looks down at you both. “Ooh jeez.”

You turn on your side then spit. Jeez. “Aw… well-played, Anneliese.”

“You caught me on an off day,” Anneliese says quickly.

“Pardon me, girls.” You all look to see Kirby sitting on one of the corner posts. “I am need in of Liberty’s presence at the moment. I hope you will not mind that.”

You hold up a finger. “One more round then I’ll go with you, Kirby.”

Kirby nods. “A fair proposition.”

Anneliese and yourself quickly regain your footing. You rush at her again, throwing a combination of jabs and crosses. Anneliese steps back with each punch slamming into her wrists. You can feel her tough bones resist your blows like a brick wall.

But then you go for a heavy overhand punch. You deliver all your bodyweight down above her guard and into her face. With a meaty smack, she falls to the ground, out of it.

You pant, smiling as you wipe the sweat off your brow. “Good fight, Anneliese.”

Anneliese growls a bit as she kneels before. “You will not be so lucky next time.”

With that, you say goodbye to Henrietta and Anneliese. Anneliese quickly starts begging Henrietta for a stricter training regimen, ostensibly in an effort to beat you. Nobody has ever actually beaten you in a fight in the ring actually, except for Henrietta, but that one took a while and you were inexperienced at the time.

You and Kirby walk to the lockerrooms. “So, what’s the deal, Kirby? Does Operator #5 want something?”

“It has to do with the Shard,” says Kirby as he watches you take off your tank top and start undoing your knickerbockers. “Some of us are still apprehensive in regards to its safety. It is a very powerful artifact that is no doubt already being pursued by our enemies.”

You sigh. “I thought I told you, it’s in safe hands. Doctor Savage is not an idiot.”

“Still, we would like for you to take a trip to the Fortress of Solitude,” he says. “We will loan you one of the SSO’s Bristol Balmorals, specially designed for long range travel.”

You narrow your eyes at Kirby as you start putting your clothes back on. “Kirby, is this necessary?”

“No,” he says. “That is why I am giving you the option. Otherwise I may ask Stringer seeing as how she has been a Magical Girl longer than most of you.”

“And we trust you,” he says. That’s actually quite the surprise. You stop buttoning up your blouse for a second, to look at him with a frown. “But that is irrelevant. Will you take the mission?”

You nod. “Alright. I’ll take your little errand, Kirby. I assure you, nothing bad will happen you little worrywart.”

Feel free to bring along whoever you would like, just as long as you do not oversaturate your presence. We look forward to results soon, Liberty.” With that, he hops off the bench and walks out of the lockerroom.

You sigh, pressing down your shirt. You’ll take a bath at home. Here in the lockerroom, it just feels like Knives could sneak up on you while you were showering. And that is not fun at all.

You shudder. You hate to remember the last time that happened.

But regardless, you have a mission to attend to. You can leave tonight and you should probably bring only two or three people. You can start deciding this later however.

You pick up a phone at the lobby and wait a moment. Technology has not yet caught up to the long distances that is required for calls like this. Finally, a click, a young woman on the line. “Operator, standing by.”

“Operator, get me Savage. Codename: Lady Liberty, pass 226217.”

“Just a minute, Liberty.” More waiting.

Finally, another click. This time, it’s the man himself. “Hello?”

“Doctor Savage? It’s me, Christine.”

“Ah, Christine!” The old man sounds happy to see you. In fact, you can’t remember a time when he’s not been happy to see you. “It’s good to hear from you! How did your essay on the Lost City of Z go?”

“Ah… that’s not important, Doctor Savage-“

“You failed, didn’t you.”

“Maybe. But- Another thing. You remember the Shard, yes?”

“Of course! We have it here in secure storage. Renny and Long Tom have given their assurance that nothing can break that vault. Why do you ask?”

“Kirby and the other Messengers are sending me up there, just to make sure it’s safe.”

“Ah, I don’t blame the old cat. It would be lovely to see you again, you and me could catch up on old stories. I’ll have arrangements for you and any friends you bring prepared, alright?”

Right now though, most of the company’s assets are going into this newfangled energy power, atomic power. Working on converting your Zep to run on it, maybe it’ll be ready when you get here!”

“Yeah, we’re leaving tonight by the way.”

“Alrighty, anyway, Howard’s record is nothing to beat. I’m more looking forward to get these things working the US Army, it’ll save a decent amount of lives. So far, they’re looking to capitalize on something that can outrun the Falke and the Hellhound. “Hey girls.” You walk up to Henrietta standing behind Anneliese, pressing up against her as she gently guides Tiger’s strikes. “What’s up with you two?”

“Ah, helloo, Christine,” says Henrietta. You can see a very deep blush on Anneliese’s angry face as she has Henrietta’s hands on her wrists and her body up against her back. “I was just showing little Anneliese here some proper form on her boxing, ya?” She smiles at you. “What’s new wit you?”

You shrug. “I have to head up to the Arctic to the Fortress of Solitude, pull some security for the you-know-what.”

“Ooh jeez.” Henrietta carefully lets go of Anneliese and walks over to you, leaning on the ropes. “Did you want any of us to help?”

“I was hoping Anneliese might come along, she did save my, Lightning, and Bomber’s life,” you say. “I figured she could use a comfy assignment.”

Anneliese walks up to you, furrowing her brow. “Do you not think I can handle anything more greater?”

You shake your head. “No, it’s just- I’d like for you to come. If you’re not too busy.”

Henrietta grins. “Ooh, Anneliese is currently on standby, so she should be free, ya!” Anneliese sighs, apparently she did not want to broadcast that. “Anyway, I would love to help but I am still busy training some of the new recruits, ya? It’s a darn thing to work on these days, ya.”

“I understand, Anneliese?”

Anneliese sighs. “When do you leave?”

“Tonight.”

She crosses her arms, pouty. “I suppose I will go, I will meet you at the airport, yes?” You smile at that. With that, you wave goodbye to her and Henrietta. Time to head home.

You pull your motorcycle up into the driveway. The old apartment building is bit better than the tenements, but it’s not exactly the best idea to broadcast lonely rich girls in a rich house who live by themselves. At least that’s how you think Operator #5 put it. You open up the door, say hello to the Landlord, then start heading upstairs to the third floor.

Soon enough, you’re there at Room 303. You stick your key in the lock and turn it, and with a click, you’re in. “Hey, guys. Should I cook some dinner?”

You see Rana on the couch, lying back and listening to the radio while Sumire is presumably in the bedroom. Rana greets you happily. “Hey, Christine!”

> Coax Sumire out of the bedroom

You knock on the bedroom door. “Sumire, you changing in there?” No answer. You can hear some ruffling around though. “Sumire?” Hm. You check the door. Doesn’t seem to be locked. “Come on, Sumire! Don’t make me come in there!”

Rana looks over. “What’s going on?”

“Ah, it’s probably Sumire being sore over the contract thing,” you say. You open the door. “And I gather that-“

Sumire is halfway out the window, but unfortunately her ass is caught and thus, she hangs out the window. “Ah, darn it!” she yells. She wiggles her hips a bit, kicking her legs as she tries to force herself free. You simply stand there as she tries to run from this. This would be pretty cute if it weren’t for the fact that she was still trying to sneak out. Finally, she gives up. “… okay you caught me.”

You walk up to her, folding your arms and glaring directly at the back of her head. “Sumire, why are you sneaking out the window?”

“… so I could go work with Jeanine,” she says. She throws her arms up. “Come on, Libby! It’s a lot of money! Do you know what you could do with 700 dollars a week!?”

“Maybe buy a better window so you can’t escape like some Alcatraz mobster,” you say quickly.

She sighs, defeated and deflated. “Just help me back in.”

> “Only if you’ll come with me on a mission.”

You rest your hand on her rump, looking down on her. “Will you help me on a mission? We have to leave for it by tonight.”

Rana pokes her head in. “We already have a mission? Awww…” She holds her newspaper, pouting. “I was going to go the Woolworth’s and get that nice scarf I was looking at.”

Sumire says, “Yeah, fat chance.”

“I’m not helping you out of there until you say yes,” you say.

“Well, I can-“ She struggles harder against the window. She squeals as she kicks and writhes against the frame, banging against the wall and pushing like a caterpillar. Her skirt from her sailor uniform flutters, her shirt nearly rips at the seams. But finally, she relents. “Okay, I’ll go.”

You grab her hips, then proceed to forcefully pull her out. She tumbles onto the floor, holding her hips. “I’ll cook you dinner, then we can discuss some payment, alright?” You pat her on the head and walk to the kitchen.

You put on an apron and start setting out the ingredients. Rana starts packing her things, mostly just spare clothes and the like while Sumire relaxes on the couch to the music.

Soon enough, you have three plates of nice hot piping clam chowder for everyone. You all settle around the small little table and start digging in. “So, Christine,” says Rana. “When do we leave?”

“Tonight,” you say. “Probably in about a few hours actually.”

“Hmph, eager to go on a milk run, eh?” asks Sumire.

“It should be fine. We’re just going up to the Fortress of Solitude.” Rana’s eyes light up. She knows what that means. She quickly slurps down her chowder, eager to get going. Sumire simply smirks in amusement at her.

As much as I love squeeing nerd girls, the have a tendency to touch things that would be best left untouched. Like artifacts that melt people, or books by arabs.

Also, can we have someone pick up that scarf for Rana. I feel like we're ignoring her.

You narrow your eyes. “If you need money so bad, Sumire, you could just ask, honestly.”

“Nah, nah, it’s not that,” says Sumire. She quickly slurps up your clam chowder as well, and with a hearty burp, she smiles.

“Then why?” you ask.

“Well… you know, money makes the whole world go round. Not enough to go around for people during the Depression,” she says.

“I wasn’t aware that affected Japan,” you say.

She shrugs at that, apparently not really knowing either. “Eh, as a kid you don’t really pay attention to things unless they’re important. And money is, you know?”

“Yeah, but why do you need money?”

… Sumire scratches her chin. “Hm…” She shrugs again. “I dunno. I might need it later?”

“You ever think this is some kind of problem?” you ask.

“Do I look like I take all the money and bathe in it? Wrap it in a warm blanket and love it tenderly? Have children with it and still love every curve and every nip of the dollar as we lie in bed romantically?” She giggles a bit. “Jeez, Libby.”

You roll your eyes as you actually savor your meal. Jeez.

Once everyone is packed, you call up a taxi to head to the airport. You throw your bags into the trunk and you all head into the backseat. “Airport, step on it,” you say. The driver nods, moving down through the dark streets of New York. It’s not all bright lights and showtunes. Sumire and Rana sit on both sides of you, Rana already deciding to take a nap and rest on your shoulder.

Sumire says, “Think we should get her that scarf?” she asks.

You smirk, then whisper, “I already bought it for her. I’ll show it to her after we’re done.” Sumire gives a “not bad” look at that.

“You know, Libby…” Sumire frowns a little. “I was wondering. You ever think of settling down?”

You blink. “Settling down?”

“Yes.” She sighs, leaning back and staring out the window. “I mean, me, I’ll keep doing this and that. Gotta keep the money flowing. But you, and Rana, and all the others. I mean- One day, you’ll give up the Soul Ring, give up the powers and everything, just be a normal girl.”

You shake your head. “I’m not retiring, not yet.”

Sumire huffs. “That one of your past lives talking?”

“No, that’s me,” you say. “It’s all me.”

Sumire smiles as she rests her head on your shoulder. “And that’s what I love about you.” You smirk, brushing some hair out of Sumire’s eyes. At the very least she can understand what kind of person you are.

You like Sumire.

You three walk across the airfield, and then you meet up with Anneliese Schulz. She stands by the modded Balmoral, crossing her arms and looking relatively grumpy. “Hold on,” says Sumire. “Are we going with the kraut?”

“Yes,” you say. “I figure I might as well bring her along. She did save our lives.”

Sumire gives you a very unamused look. “Libby. She stares at you when you sleep. I’m not even kidding.”

Rana giggles a bit. “I think that’s cute.”

“It could be worse,” you say. You shudder to think that.

Anneliese looks at you as you approach. “Right, are we ready to go?” You nod at that.

“Sit back and relax. I can fly,” you say.

Sumire says, “Hopefully not into any oceans. The Balmoral isn’t exactly a subplane.”

“Yeah, I’ve realized that,” you say quickly as you hoist yourself inside.

Rana hoists herself in as well once you start getting associated with the controls. “Wow! This must be the Balmoral Gunship! Extra tanks that can take us all the way to Tokyo from here, but all the guns replaced with 20mm cannons! You know, lots of pirates like to use these kinds of Balmorals for anti-zep duties.”

You nod at that. “Yeah, I suppose Kirby wanted security for us.”

Rana and Sumire sit down next to each other in one of the cramped crewspaces. “I’ll say!” says Rana. Anneliese helps herself in then sits down across from her.

“Alright, everyone strapped in?” you say. You click the engines into ignition. “We’re a go.” The props start spinning to life, roaring as the Balmoral starts taxiing down the runway. You can feel Anneliese’s glare at the back of your head. Rana wasn’t kidding, she’s probably going to be staring at you all flight. That’s not going to be fun.

Already about an hour or two into the flight. You’ve probably crossed over into Canada by now. You yawn a bit. You’ll have Tiger take over in a bit hopefully. It’s a really good thing Doctor Savage taught you how to fly in short notice after the Atlantean business. It’s proven to be quite the valuable help.

You look back for a second to see Rana and Sumire, leaning up against each other, out like lights. Anneliese herself has her arms folded, leaning against the hard metal wall of the Balmoral, still facing in your direction, but slumbering. She just won’t give up.

You smirk as you look back forward.

Then the radar blips. You look at the radar, dots, coming from behind. And an even bigger dot coming from your Nine O’clock. Who’s out flying at this time of night. You pick up the radio and say, “Um, Liberty 1-1, unknown aircraft, identify yourselves?”

“This is Edward Roberts coming in from the Royal Fortune.” You look to your left, and soon enough you see the tracking lights of a Zeppelin come out from above a cloud.

Edward Roberts, of Robert’s Raiders, the Sky Pirates.

“Surrender your aircraft or we’ll shoot you down!”

Pfft. Like hell you are.
