Part 9

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, you have been through a battle that saw a comrade slain and yourself injured. Your last memory had been the sight of the girl Iovetta, followed by a bewildering dream of great blasphemy, with the heat of the sun drumming your feverish head and red wine clouding your wits.

Now though you awake to the sound of birds and sunlight through a window, streaming across a proper bed, and the feel of heavy blankets weighing down your body.

You blink bleary eyes to see an unfamiliar face, a hunchbacked old man with a scrofulous bulge on his neck and wet pale eyes. He was folding your tunics and doublets, stacking them carefully upon a chest. Surely such a task was for your squire and younger brother Hugo? You saw no sign of your men, your arms, your armour. In fact you recognized nothing about your surroundings at all.

The ceiling above was adorned with a vision of the Holy Mother with Christ suckling at her breast, painted in an Eastern style. The look of love for her child was clear, the painter had been quite skilled. That love seemed to extend beyond the child and to all that looked upon the image.

Were our stats updated from last thread? I could have sworn that we were at mid 60s WAR before our boost, but maybe I'm just crazy.
>>
I really wish you had a twitter so I would know when you start this quest.
>>
"Where are my men?" you ask, "My squire, the womenfolk?" You sit up in the bed, a sudden belt of pain up your arm as you put your weight upon it. Your left arm, your shield arm, must still be fractured.

The man looked to you with a smile. He was an ugly creature, with knotted hands that seemed as if they'd been twisted by some malady, but dipped a skillful bow.

"You are awake sir, the Count will be pleased," he said, "As for your men, they have been given rooms that befit their station. Your squire is not stationed far, shall I fetch him?"

"Who are you, where is this?" you asked, though his first answer gave you some idea.

"Jaffa," he said, a place you had guessed, "The castle of Count Hugh, and I am his humble porter Rikard."

Count Hugh, the rumoured rebel lord and lover of the queen. Malik's employer.

"I shall fetch your squire, sir, so that you might be more at peace for a familiar face," Rikard bowed as he retreated from the room. It was a very quiet chamber, you could hear nothing but birdsong. No clatter of servants, no sound of men drilling as you might in other castles. Peaceful, restful.

It did not stay that way for long.

Hugo burst through the doorway with a cry, soon followed by Chihirizahd. He fell across your lap, happy tears streaming from his face.

"We feared you would not wake," he said, "All the ride you seemed taken at once by deep sleep then a sudden laughing madness, but you never once awoke. You scared me, sir."

Chihirizahd stood with tears in her eyes leaning against the doorway, lips barely parted. She looked quiet, and fearful.

> a knight should not fear, Hugo
> I feared as well brother
>>
>>35093115
Yes, but your previous war stat was boosted by your sword, which was blunted and made useless after the last fight.
>>
>>35093243
>> a knight should not fear, Hugo

Unconvincingly, but say it's good to see him and Chiri again. Ask how the other members of our company are doing.
>>
>>35093334
This.
>>
"Do not fear, Hugo. A knight must be bold and fierce in everything," you said, ruffling his hair, "Fear earns you nothing but misstep and self-doubt."

He nodded, arms bunched in your bed sheets.

"It's good to see you little brother," you said, "And you Chihirizahd. My time is not yet spent." You reached out a hand towards her and she took it in hers, pressed it against her cheek.

"Master," she said, kissing your palm while small tears spilled down her cheeks.

You think on all your other companions. "How are they?" you ask.

Hugo grinned. "Sir Solomon is frustrated, he is in the barracks with the soldiers and thinks it an insult. Sir Orlando and Sir Malik have been much with Count Hugh, enjoying fine dinners and entertainment. Franz stays in the tavern, baptised or not Count Hugh distrusts Jews. And Sir Theodore and his girls have been given a place near the chapel. Judith sneaked out to see you once, but the Sister caught her and locked her up." Then Hugo's smile twisted sour. "S-sir Welf is laid out in the chapel. The priest is preparing a burial space. We've only been in Jaffa two days, though it took two more to reach here."

Welf, that's right. His remains would need to be seen to. He had fallen defending you. You owed him much.

And the reminder of battle turned your mind to the plunder of victory. The spoils should have been good from such a well equipped foe. Saddles and horses both, good maile and spears, swords and helms.

>>
"Hugo, send for the Count," you said, pushing the boy aside as you rose. Both he and your slave moved to help you, though your strength was quick to return without their support. "I must speak with the man, and thank him for his hospitality. Chihirizahd, help me dress so as to be presentable."

Hugo was off like a bolt, while Chihirizahd assisted you out of your sweat stained small clothes. She brought out a clean seat of clothes from the neat pile the porter had made, helped you into hose, then doublet, and over that a good silk tunic. She smoothed the folds across your shoulders, and across your hips.

And while you were alone she took a moment to reach up on tip toes and kissed you on the chin.

"You look good," she said, "Strong."

You adjusted your belt, and waited. And waited.

It took another half hour before a man came through your door, by which time Chihirizahd had retired by the window to look out to the grounds beneath.

Hugo announced Count Hugh. He was an average looking man, perhaps a bit broader in the shoulder than most. He had a broad, boyish face covered in brown stubble, thick curly brown hair that made a blaze around that face.

He came over to you quick, hand outstretched, a smile on his face.

"Well met Sir Wilhelm, your companions have told me much about you," he takes you at the wrist, a strong martial grip, "And you have my thanks for assisting my men in battle, at no small cost to your own forces. Your man rests in my private chapel, and we've a space for him being readied."

>>
"No thanks for Christian duty," you say, returning the strong grip. Hugh grins larger at that, and pats your shoulder. "Though I would say there is one thing you can do. Move my men into better lodging. Private chambers nearby, or whatever else you think suitable."

"Consider it done," Hugh drew you by the shoulder, "Now if you have the strength I'd like your company. You caught me at a most interesting juncture, a meeting of minds discussing the concerns of the realm. Your friend Orlando already seems a ready mind, but says he'll speak no further until you have been drawn in."

"I have strength enough," you said. You certainly felt in good health. "But what is my word on this?"

Hugh laughed. "You are not a complete unknown, sir. Some of us have heard of your actions north of Sidon, and now your aid here has just cemented what some have already heard. A true Christian knight has come from Germany, making a course of cleaning filth from our roads."

You are not sure if its all that. Most of your actions had been incidental to other things.

He leads you through the castle, you could not in good conscious refuse him. He urges you on to his private chambers while saying little.

But its in his chambers you see Orlando seated with five other men.

Count Hugh introduces them all one in turn. "Count Pons and his son Raymond, of Tripoli." Pons was a straight backed knightly man, hair cut in the French fashion, long limbed and like a heron in his manner. His son was broader, with heavy eyebrows that gave him a wilder cast, but was otherwise the image of his father.
"My Constable Barisan and Lord Baldwin of Ramla." The two men bowed. Baldwin was a fair man, blond haired but orange bearded, with a jowl heavy face. Balian was darker, near native in his character, and he dressed for battle in maille with sword at hip. "And you have met Lord Gerard of Sidon." The owl faced lord smiled at you, his eyes still as cold as you remembered.

(cont.)
>>
>>35094581
Orlando seemed discomforted to be sitting across from his cousin, shifting in his seat, but he had a smile and nod for you as a seat was offered.

Count Hugh took up at the head of the collection of nobles. He was the youngest of the landed lords, and had a dynamic energy that they lacked. His eyes crackled as they swept over the gathering. This was the start of something, or perhaps the end of a beginning, and you felt a discomfort under your collar.

"My lords, Sir Wilhelm, who has done good service for me and Lord Gerard as well. Welcome to this conclave."

"And what is the purpose of this meeting?" you could hazard a guess, but you disliked being drawn in with no explanation. You keep your eyes on Count Hugh, your question directed at him.

He seems surprised by your question. "To discuss the king," he said, "And the insults he has visited upon the queen and the native lords of Jerusalem."

"The true heir of Baldwin," Count Pons said with a smack of his hand on the arm of his chair, "King Baldwin never meant for Fulk to reign supreme. Melisende was always intended to succeed him, with Fulk only a consort."

Lord Gerard nodded, but at the same time seemed unconvinced. "Tis true the king intended such, many of us were there at her coronation and at his death bed besides, but it matters little when Fulk has the Angevin support, with the French crown besides."

Hugh struck hard on his chair. "It matters," he barked, "It is the law, and it is the will of my king!"

All assembled passed a frown from one to the other. Hugh marshaled himself. "And even if his attitude to the queen weren't disgrace enough, he interfers in the High Court, and appoints foreigners to local posts."

"True, true," Lord Gerard nodded with much more sympathy.

"He plots against her sisters also," Count Pons said, "Why he means to force Princess Alice into a match, and her tender daughter Constance besides. To yet another foreign born Frank. I'll not allow that unchallenged."

Barisan spoke next, toward you. "He has leveled many insults, many unintended, and tempers run hot as a result."

You keep your mouth shut. These were men of power and station, you were but a landless knight with some small company.

"King Fulk has the backing of France and Anjou, perhaps the English besides, while we are but two counts and a lord," Gerard said, "I would love nothing more than to rid Jerusalem of this noxious pest, but we must proceed with caution. He has friends both here and there, while we cannot say how many would support our cause."

"I sent out envoys," Hugh said, leaning back in his chair, "To every lord not deep in Fulk's pocket. Some have answered while others remain silent, but only you came. They fear him."

"They should, he's a fearsome man," Gerard replied.

"It was not an accident that saw King Baldwin reach out to him of all people," Pons spoke, "He is a warrior, as true as our king."

"A good warrior," Baldwin of Ramla murmured.

Hugh's mood turned black, he was not getting the reception he had hoped and he looked near to sulk, and his darkened gaze drops on you. "Tell me Sir Wilhelm, what is your view. New to our country as you are, what do you think of our king's administration?"

And even if we win, we will piss of the franks and maybe the English in this, support which the Kingdom of Jerusalem needs. Unless we get support from both the "Roman" empires(both unlikley).
>>
with all the extra money we get from our ransom and loot, we should get more men under our employ, at least 15 footman and some archers or crossbowmen for support.
>>
>>35095811
we have yet to Ransom our prisoner but yes acquiring some men should be on our to do list.
>>
You had seen little laudable of King Fulk so far, but then you were new to this land. You thought it a mistake to either praise or condemn him wholly, so worded your reply with some caution.

"King Fulk is not a man I know well, and would be remiss to condemn wholly on other's words," you begin, "But in my time here I have been beset by brigands and raiders on all roads. The security of this realm is lax."

"He levels most of his forces in Oultrejordan or in Galilee," Barisan said.

"Still, he keeps his lords in line. Is that not the sign of a strong king? That you do not war among yourself, as the princes of Germany and France do. That speaks of some merit."

"Tyranny," Hugh spat.

"But I ask you this, what numbers can each of you levy? How many knights and men-at-arms can you raise to match him in the field?"

The lords all exchange weary looks. "I can muster twenty knights," Lord Gerard said, "And some six hundred soldiers with them." Not a scornful number.

"And I can call sixty knights, and near a thousand soldiers, perhaps more," Hugh added.

"Tripoli can muster a thousand or so troops as well, and eighty knights in all," Count Pons said with some pride.

(cont.)
>>
we should mention the letter ladu lucca gave us and see if anyone here has people who could forge/reforge the seal if we were to break it.
>>
>>35095888
"Near three thousand in all," Sir Barisan said, "But the king can muster ten from all his landings and supporters, and a hundred odd knights besides. That is not counting whatever foreign mercenaries he might call to his side, or deals made with Frank kings. And his wealth is more than all us together in Acre alone. Supplies and coin."

"We could not win an open war," Lord Baldwin said, tapping the chair arm.

"Not as it stands, no," Hugh said, "But I think there are many who would rise with us if blades were barred. Those sheepish to make a stand now only affect such to keep the peace, and will find a lion's heart when someone stands up to the man."

"The Prince of Galilee loves Melisende dearly, and Antioch besides is held by her sister, their numbers with ours would level the field considerably."

Pons waggled a finger. "Be not so sure of Antioch. Alice is much in my confidence, and her position is weak. The Patriarch of Antioch colludes with the king, against her and her daughter."

"Then the Romans, Alexios or John would come!" Hugh slammed his fist.

"A Komnenos? Better inviting a snake. He would demand Antioch, even if he would deliver victory," Pons said with equal fervor.

"The Muslims then, I would cut a deal with al-Hafiz if I had to!"

With this they all recoiled. Oh it looked as if Hugh had lost them entire.

"Your hatred of the king goes too far Hugh," Pons' son spoke for the first time, his beard a bristle, "To speak of making a compact with the Saracens of Egypt. You dare suggest such? Why not call on Zengi of Aleppo besides and making it a true deal with the devil?"

You do not know quite what to say, but you know it would be poor return to say nothing in support of Hugh.

"Not all wars are won on the battlefield," you say. It's such a simple statement that it draws all attention to you. "Speak of numbers alone, and you get an answer of pure arithmetic. But that's not all there is when it comes to measuring fate. There is the will of God, to which no numbers can ever compete." You point to the cross on Lord Gerard's chest. "Fulk does nothing while heathens rampage across his kingdom. You say he gathers men at the frontiers, what matters the frontier if the heartland is imperiled? I say do not strike him with a naked blade, but strike him with words, and with deeds. Take up the defense of the Holy Land, and do it in the name of the Queen you claim to love. Fight the brigands and raiders where they appear, and use every victory to scorn the king. Take your grievances to the High Court and air them before all the nobles of the realm so that they can see and know how he acts."

Count Pons was nodding while Count Hugh grinned, the others visibly stirred by your words.

"I have begun such already," Hugh said.

"So keep at it!" you say, "Keep at it until all the land loves you and hates Fulk. And only then should you muster your numbers, and reap your fortune."

"Yes," Raymond said, "Yes! I like that. It is knightly, it is valiant. No skulking in shadows!" He cuffed his father and grinned at you.

"Patience is our watchword," Gerard said, "Patience and outward displays of virtue. None must question our character, lest it all fall apart as a sham."

"Deeds, deeds, not words!" Count Hugh was laughing, "Of course, yes, you are right Sir Wilhelm. I thank you for your level council."

But Sir Barisan and Lord Baldwin exchanged a look that did not seem pleased.

The lords talked for some time on that, thoughts of open rebellion gone from their mind, plans drawn for more cunning ploys.

You look at the cross and the expectant lords. What to say, to be brought into such company?

You choose your words with care.

"I am not a man of station," you begin, "My people are landless knights sworn to the Arch-Bishop of Trier. I came to this land with only two boon companions. I have no great resource, no armies to martial should the war drum sound. I lead only a ragged band of wanderers and miscreants. It is not just or right that I should be included in such a covenant, for a queen that is not my own."

"You will find young man," Sir Pons said, "That Jerusalem is a land where fortune turns on the breeze. You are landless now but having heard you speak...no, I do not think you will be landless forever."

"Many of our ancestors were land poor men when first they came upon the Holy Land," Gerard said, "They came here and took what they could, and built a kingdom unlike any other in the world."

"Jerusalem's fate rests on adventurers such as you," Hugh said with a nod, "In the face of all the heathens and Romans, we need young, brave men to come and swell our ranks. And we need reward for such service. You will get your due in time, as our forefathers did. At sword tip and with god's favour."

They all seemed in support of you, though Orlando's smile is stretched painfully, and Lord Baldwin hides a glower that you only just notice.

> take the oath
> for the last time refuse
>>
>>35096738
How so? The whole idea is to turn them down using our status as an excuse, while at the same time appearing to support them in principle, and therefore open up the possibility of working for them and enriching ourselves in the process.

>>
>>35096886
"In that case, so as not to insult those who have claimed land already, I would like to decline this offer, until the breeze has granted me fortune, until this land of opportunity has granted me it's fruit, so that my reward will be just and fair."

"Your words humble me," you say, taking the cross, "I so swear upon the cross, in the name of Christ and the Mother Mary, that I shall stand for Queen Melisende, to see her returned to her rightful station. To stand in defense of the realm against all threats. This I swear."

You give the cross back to Gerard. The lords look pleased, and when you are done they all stand.

"Well, that is our matter settled, caution and patience sirs," Count Pons said with a smile.

"Come for dinner in the hall around the sixth hour," Hugh said, "Let us have small celebration of our common cause."

But as you left you noted Orlando's face was very sour, and he steered away from your path once you left the room.

Orlando, you did not like the way he reacted. You followed him a step.

"Orlando," you say, and he stops and turns, forcing a smile, "Come, tell me what troubles you?"

He mouthed something and fiddled with the toggle on his vestment. "Ah, ah, yes Sir Wilhelm," he said it softly, "What troubles me? I was not there in that room. My oath was quickly given and soon forgotten. Their eyes on you, my friend. Their ears were pricked by your words. And well spoken they were. You always speak so well, that all are ready to listen. My cousin, my cousin," he looked off through the window, "You said you would help me against him, to claim back my stolen land. Ah, but now its that you and he are comrades sworn to one another's defense. My land is gone now with that, my hopes my dreams."

He curled his scarred lip and struck the wall with a fist. "What matters it all now? As Count Pons said, gone in a breeze."

He began to slink away, head low. A slick of blood stuck to the wall where his fist had landed.

"Yes, I suppose," he replied.

You grab him by the shoulder. "You will not be lost or forgotten in all this. By the blood of our covenant, nothing changes between us."

Orlando gives great heave. "Your words again," he pushes your hand aside, "I-I do not doubt you are sincere, please just give me time to think on it."

You look at his crestfallen expression and see a deep sorrow there. "Aye," you say, "Time enough, but we ride together."

He nodded slight. "Yes, we ride together."

Your feet find you over to the chapel. And you find Welf, his face and long body covered in a shroud, almost as if he were on display. Candles had been lit, and little tokens left by his feet.

Strange, silent Welf. Who had stood resolutely between you and death, fighting like mad. What had you truly done to earn such loyalty? You laid a hand by his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," you said, "If my horse had not bucked, had I been a better rider, or warrior. Had I....done better." Your hand brushes the veil that hides his face. It did not seem the face you knew, such injuries had warped its landscape into an unnatural range of hills and valleys. A smell had begun to rise from the corpse, the rot quickened by the heat of the land.

"I would bury you in Jerusalem," you said, "In a quiet place."

The corpse did not reply. Welf was gone now, he was with Christ. This was just his clay vessel, awaiting his return for the Resurrection.

"Until we meet again brother," you said, kissing the brow of your dead comrade.

You leave and you meet the priest. A skinny young man with rotten teeth.

"I'd like to move him," you said, "Take him to Jerusalem."

The priest looked you over. "I can't say that is wise," he said, "The vessel was much damaged, and the rot will have it falling apart faster 'en it might otherwise." Then he really considered you. "But, uh, yes we can ready the remains for transportation."

You bow your head and the priest gives you a small blessing, sending you on your way.

You return to your chamber to find Chihirizahd. She was wearing the dress you'd been given weeks ago by Sir Blaise, considering herself in a mirror of burnished metal. It made her form look dappled, but your eyes saw she was lovely in that French style dress.

When she saw you she froze, and backed away with mouth agape.

"Forgive me master," she fell onto her knees, "I should not have."

"You're right, you shouldn't have," for a very start it was a crime for a peasant to dress as a noble. Chihirizahd hadn't even the luxury of being a peasant. You felt a flash of anger at her presumption, but you could not be entirely angry. It did look good on her, very good. "I've warned you before about going through other's belongings."

"If it takes your fancy, keep it. But beware who sees you in such things, or you will get into trouble," you said, drawing her off her knees, "Riffle through my things without my permission again however, and I will punish you."

She flashed you a grin, batted her eyes. "And how will you punish me?"

Your grip on her turns hard. "This is no jest Chihirizahd." Her smile flounders and she bows again.

"Forgive me, master," she said, kissing your boot.

You drum up Hugo.

"Sir?" he asked.

"Fetch Solomon, we've a dinner to attend," you said.

"Yes sir," Hugo bowed smartly and withdrew. Hugo's birthday was in two days.

Solomon was soon brought to you and he laughed. "Good to see you on your feet!" he said, taking you into a hug. He looks over your shoulder at Chihirizahd and whistles. "Dog!" he said with a broad grin, "You invite me when you have such a fine woman to display? Ah, should I be flattered or worry for your wits." He was dressed smartly for the occasion, in Frankish dress that fit him well.

He took you 'round the shoulder. "Let us enjoy the night," and together you went to the feast hall.

It was set up for the nobles to sit at the edge on a long table, with long tables set up in columns to seat the soldiers and favoured servants. Men of Sidon and Tripoli sat with men of Jaffa, as well as Malik's Syrians. You saw that Malik was at the high table with the nobles, speaking with Count Pons. Orlando sat with Raymond of Tripoli.

Hugh gestured for you to sit with him. He had Lord Ramla and Sir Barisan on his right side, but had seats on his left reserved for you.

The master of the castle did you a great honour by seating you beside him. YOu took up a placement, with Solomon further to your left. Pork and beef were both provided, as well as fish and rice, dates, apples sweetened in a custard, small pastries stuffed with mince and fruits, plates of dates and many other things. It was a handsome spread, and you ate well.

"Sir Wilhelm," Hugh struck you on the shoulder, "Tell me, are you quickly off to Jerusalem?"

"Soon," you say, "By Easter I hope to be there."

"Then that gives you a few days to tarry," he said, "You must come hunting with me. I saw that lion helm you wear and had the story from your squire. A valiant deed. We've large cats stalking the herds up yonder. I could use some help in flushing them out."

An interesting offer, but the hunting of big predators like that was a dangerous game.

"I must thank you on another count also," he said over a goblet of wine, "separate from rescuing my men. Those nuns you delivered to safety. Truly, it is good of you to do so." He said in such a way, with an inclination of his head, that you wondered if he knew. "I had heard that Zengi makes a game of capturing pious Christian women, a perverse delight in despoiling them. It's said he himself was fathered from a Christian princess taken in battle and forced into a harem. Rapine must be in his blood if that is true." Perhaps he did not.

"You simply must, must accept a reward. Name it and if I have it, it is yours," he said with such earnestly.

"A sword perhaps, to replace the one I'd ruined," you said. Hugh claps and unbelts his very own.

"This is no little thing I'm giving you," he said, "This was taken by my grandfather from the Muslim lord of these lands after he defeated his forces in battle. It is the finest steel, said to be tempered and quenched in the blood of slaves. Brought from furthest Hindustan. The Lord of this castle valued it more than his own daughters, and if my grandfather had not slain him would have paid a heavy ransom to have it back."

He held it up in black leather scabbard to see, he bared an inch of blade and you saw the waves and curls in the steel, an odd pattern. And the edge was near white, you feared to touch it.

"I cannot blame him. No sharper edge nor stronger spine. It's balance is perfect. Why you could cut the air and make the wind bleed," he said that with such relish you wondered if it was the wine talking.

"Damascus steel," he said, offering it to you.

> acquired Damascus steel sword (+7 war, +2 damage, ignores armour)

"You are too generous," you say, but he laughs.

"You have earned it, and I think you will need it soon enough."

You ask him a little bit about the matter of the roads.

"I've enlisted some Templars to help, and mercenaries besides," he said around a mouthful of pork, "The Templars are a new group, but quickly rising. You've met the mercenaries, Malik over yonder. Good man, good to have him." He downed some wine. "Yes, I've never had such a hatred for the Muslim as some of my fellows. Though there can be no doubt they must be resisted at all costs."

"Indeed sir," Lord Baldwin said, "There has been talk of an effort to seize Ascalon, long past time."

Hugh nodded. "Many of the raiders that bother us sally from that port." He slammed a fist on his table. "And Fulk does nothing but worry away in Oultrejordan and Galilee, when we have more urgent targets to the south. Egypt, Egypt, Egypt will be the doom of us if we do not take the initiative! "I like this lord," Solomon murmured with a grin.

"You know the Queen?" you ask, redirecting the question. You'd hard they were lovers.

"Aye!" he said, "I grew up with her. Though she's a few years my elder." His face turned red and his smile goofy. "She's a beautiful woman, and brilliant. Baldwin loved her dearly, saw her for what she was. A ruler, a damned good one." He turned whistful. "Ah, I remember swimming in the Jordan with her and Alice, Hodierna too shy to join us. Those were good days, when Baldwin still reined and warred with the Muslims, when my father ruled Jaffa and I could be about any business that took my fancy. Glorious days."

"Is there not a fourth Rethel sister?" Barisan asked.

Hugh nodded. "Little Ioveta. I have not seen her in some years, since she was knee high. Bound for church service I heard. Bright girl, like her sisters. I'd sent her a book of stories to keep her entertained while in the cloister." He burped loudly.

A bard came out, and a man on dulcimer as well.

"Clear the decks, we'll have dancing!" Count Hugh called, "Send in the womenfolk, find a partner! Everyone!" He laughed as he grabbed a passing serving wench and clambered over the table, met with hails of laughter from his soldiers. Barisan and Lord Baldwin both gave disapproving frowns.

Women shuffle forth from the solar they had been eating in, you saw even Adelheid was in their number, looking merry and ready for a dance. And Chihirizahd, who wore the dress and batted at the pawing hand and large grin of Raymond.

There was a noble looking woman of some older age overseeing the whole flock, hurrying them out of their private room with a cheery grin.

"The Lord's wife," Sir Barisan said, pointing her out as Count Hugh cavorting with a slim lass of sixteen much to the cheer of his men.

You spy her in the corner, blushing at the revelry. Ioveta, that is the novice Judith, who wore a garland of lilies around her head and a simple blue dressed belted at the waist. She looked much different than she often did, dressed in secular clothes. The fit was closer, showing her hips, and low along the neck to display the nape of her neck. She had a long, fine neck. She fiddled with her golden braid, eyes wandering the surrounding, curiously lingering on the more intimate couples.

She looked very much alone.

You weaved past Solomon, who had taken Adelheid by the arm, and past Orlando who danced with a shy young noble girl.

"My lady," you presented yourself before her, offering your hand.

"Sir," she replied carefully but curiously, taking it in her own.

You take her out as the dancers are formed, a simple round dance to a simple beat and melody. The bard is not skilled, though he is competent, and as you take 'Judith' round you receive a wink from Solomon, who handles his nun in a way that some might call improper.

You see as you dance that some keep off the floor. None of the Muslims present danced, and in fact Malik frowned disapprovingly at the entire thing.

Hugo kept off to one side, happy to see Sabeen in company, and rather than danced talked to her about something. You saw her attention was on the dancing however, and felt bad that your little brother hadn't the experience to note her disinterest. Lord Baldwin and Sir Barisan were in conversation with Count Gerard and Pons, but Pons' son Raymond was dancing with Chihirizahd, and she smiled brightly up at the tall fierce heron.

Your attention returned to 'Judith' and you saw she struggled to match your step.

"Let me lead and do not worry for grace," you said, carefully showing her how to step.

Soon though you were running out of breath, a flash of pain in your arm forcing you to sit.

'Judith' sat with you, and began to inspect your wounds.

"I tried to see you," she said, "T-to check on your injuries of course!" You'd heard about that. A passing servant handed you both wine and left with a smile.

Count Hugh certainly kept a lively court.

You grin but set your wine aside. Judith drinks a little but follows your example, setting it beside her on the bench. She rolls up your sleeve and unbinds your right arm. The wound was healing fast and clean, a jagged purple scar over the back of your forearm. It would eventually pale over time, and become a light pink pucker of flesh, but for now it stood out ugly with stitches.

"These can come out," she said, brushing the cord. You offer her your knife and she removes them with a steady hand. She smooths over the skin when it was done, feeling the bumps in the skin.

Her face glowed a little, a very pleased smile on her face, a proud lift to her carriage.

"Thank you, for everything you've done."

"T-thank you," she said, "That's what I should be saying. You don't owe me, I mean, that is I owe you so much that, that...you've been so great and I." She closed her mouth and puffed her cheeks. Pressed her hands to her face. "I'm such a turned about child. I'm sorry."

Her shoulders started to tremble a little, was she crying?

You wrap your arms around her, press her forehead to your own.

"You are many things. Intelligent, wise, beautiful. You are a great woman, you will be a great woman no matter what path you take. And I-"

You catch yourself before you say those last words. I love you.

Do you? The thought made your head spin. But you looked down on the young woman and felt a stirring, and a clench in your middle that you hadn't felt in years, a feeling lost to the river Rhine.

"You what?" she asked, smiling through her blush, eyes glistening through her lashes.

"Have every faith in you," you said, rustling her hair. Her eyes darted away but her smile grew. She tilted her chin and gave you a soft peck on the cheek.

"A-and I have every faith in you, Wilhelm," she said, breaking away from you to stand. She spun off into the crowd, her braid thrown out, a last glimpse of her backside before the revelry closed in around her.

Holy hell.

Holy hell indeed.

So how bad will we wreck True History if (and when) we decide to take Iovetta out and away from the nunnery? And if we do so, would we more or less gain a claim on the Kingdom of Jerusalem that we can press on her behalf?

Mein Gut, this is turning into Crusader Kings II.
>>
>>35101207
No, you moron. She doesn't need someone going all teenage Romeo on her.

She knows her life is in danger, she knows she's a potential political tool, she has second thoughts about her vocation in life, and her mentor has proven to be something of a hypocrite, albeit a conflicted one.

She needs someone stable, reliable, confident, and powerful. We've been that in our better moments, when we weren't trying to bone her.

She's drunk, blushing, and we're in the middle of trying to woo her, and you went off on a tangent which no one understood for a reason no one knew.

>a reason no one knew

If you didn't get it, you're severely lacking in social skills. I'm also not alone in this. It's just that the overwhelming majority of posters have apparently learnt how to deal with women via multiple choice visual novels and hitting "romantic" as an option at every opportunity.

Depends on the quality of the battlements, in either scenario.

A few dozen men-at-arms on horse back moving quickly through lightly defended territory can be devastating though. Chevauchee is a pretty good, if diabolic, tactic.

Let me explain, Hugh has let it been known that he and other lords wish to strike at Egypt, after the intrigue with King Fulk is over and done with and the Queen securing the throne if we married Iovetta and participated in the campaign against Egypt it would put us in a great position to take Alexandria for ourselves and not make the whole world pissed at us.

>Apocalyptic? How and why would it be?

Because the Mongolian Eruption was such a successful and large scale operation of mass slaughter, rape and pillage that no other human event has gotten close to matching the sheer callousness of the horrors inflicted with such little effective resistance.

Anyone who tells you the Mongols 'weren't that bad' needs to be relayed a few of the stories of their occupation. Not even conquest (which were worse), just occupation, of various territories.

If you ever get a chance scope out some of the Persian chronicles from the period and give a listen to Dan Carlin's podcast on the subject. I checked out his sources after giving it a listen and if anything he underplays some of the Mongolian atrocities.

Literally no one managed more than a gruesome stalemate against the Mongols until decades after initial contact.
