Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

After a night down memory lane you find yourself drained and brooding. However, you soldier on as you get your first look at your target, Anna McCoy, and her father Gillian. One way or another you're to see her into your custody to solidify his continued support of the sympathizers. While clear, it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. However, you at least manage to end the night on a pleasant note with Christina.

You wake up to two pleasant realizations. First, you had a full, dreamless sleep. Second, Christina is still asleep, curled into your side, her head nuzzled against your chest. For someone who was hesitant about this, she seems perfectly comfortable now.

A glance at the clock sitting on the nightstand tells you it’s about the time you normally wake up. Barring any late night unpleasantness, at least.

Part of you wants to just lay here and enjoy this sleepy sense of peacefulness while you can. Another part is nagging at you to get up and not push your luck. You could always repay her kindness with a nice breakfast. But that’d require getting up…

With great effort you get out of bed, making extra effort to not wake Christina. Succeeding in that, you make your way back to your own room to see what you're working with. There, Jeeves nods to you in greetings as he goes about dusting the room, humming as he goes. It isn't long before it becomes obvious he's about to burst.

"Go on," You say.

"Hmmm?" He answers, releasing the duster from his teeth to the table for a moment. "What ever do you mean, sir?"

"You want to ask."

"I have no idea what you-"

"You may just be a skull, Jeeves, but your tarotface is horrible."

"It's none of my business what you or Lady Massey do in your free time," He hovers from side to side. "Of course, if you wished to brighten a poor fellows day with gossip..."

"You've read too many gelt novels," You chuckle. "We spent the night going over Intel."

"So no teary-eyed, emotional confessions or declarations?"

"It came close, but I kept my composure."

"You are truly a man of iron resolve, Master Dunkin."

With help from Jeeves you find a tray big enough for the both of you, and to be able to be used in bed. Ignoring your servants subtle and not so subtle questions on the night prior, you finish and head back.

You walk through the door to find Christina sitting up in bed, hair a mess and rubbing at her eyes.

"Good morning," You greet.

"So you say," She mutters, blinking away sleep and sniffing. "Something smells lovely."

"A thank you," You say, setting the tray down for her, "for last night."

"It was nothing," She scoffs, then smiles. "But so long as it's here..."

Taking a seat next to her, you both dig into your meals. Christina seems to be in a good mood this morning. A thought resurfaces, hoping to use this to your advantage, but you hesitate. Perhaps you could try one last time to change her mind about Anna?

suggest possibly working with Delmar and his noble friend to sequester anna away somewhere safe, they just wanted to kidnap anna to make a statement and send a message, but they didn't necessarily want anna brought to them, we could reason it as less evidence leading to them, meaning the operation is safer

You decide to take the chance.

"Ma'am?" You ask.

She pauses in her meal and looks up at you curiously.

"There was something I wanted to talk to you about," You explain. "About the girl. Anna."

"Yes?" She answers warily.

"The sympathizers want the girl taken away to send a message to her father, to keep him in line. They didn't specifically say we would hand her over to them once we got her."

You expect some form of ridicule, but instead she nods for you to continue as she eats.

"So I say we fake the kidnapping. McCoy hands over his daughter in secret, Delmar gives him his word for her safety, and there's no risk of bloodshed. For our people, or his.”

Christina takes her time finishing her meal, possibly just to make you squirm, before speaking.

"Say we do this," She says, wiping her mouth with a napkin. "The sympathizers find out. What then?"

"We keep the number of people that know of it as limited as possible. Judging from the greeting some his people gave us, I'd say they're as loyal as they are suspicious."

"And what if they ask to take her?”

“We reason that she’s better off with us. If McCoy and his friends catch wind, they'll know some two bit mercenary and a Rogue Trader are guilty. Not someone closer to home.”

Christina’s brow twitches, though you take that as a good sign. You said something she couldn't shoot down. A few minutes pass as she thinks your words over. Then, with a sigh, she shakes her head.

“I trusted you with a combat mission and it was a success,” She says. “I suppose trusting you with something more subtle isn’t too far out of the question.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” You tell her.

“But,” She continues. “If something goes wrong, on any end, I expect you to take as much responsibility for it as you would if it goes well. Stop smiling like an idiot. You’re taking a serious risk here.”

“I understand, ma’am,” You nod, still smiling.

Her only response is to roll her eyes.

“Don’t thank me yet. You still have to tell your master plan to Delmar, and then the two of you have to face Mr. McCoy.”

“What do you plan on doing today?”

“Tiberius’ agents may have something new for us, but for right now I’m playing the waiting game. Both with them and with you. Now, get to it. The gala’s not far away.”

You gather up the remains of both your breakfast and head for the door.

“And, Lieutenant,” Christina calls, and you turn back. “Thank you. For the meal.”

“My pleasure,” You say.

With that, you go about preparing for the day. You’re not entirely sure how to handle the situation, considering Delmar had tried to pry the truth out of you before. Still, better late than never.

You decide to meet with Delmar now, rather than later. After a few questions from servants you find the Captain at his personal dining table. He seems to have had better days, still wearing his golden silk night clothes as he sits massaging his temples.

When he sees you enter, however, he manages a smile and waves you forward.

"Good morning, Captain," You greet. "Is everything alright?"

"Gillian nearly killed me. Or perhaps just my liver. However, while my body may be weak my pride is untarnished," Delmar answers, leaning back in his chair. "How may I help you, my friend?"

You signal to a chair and Delmar nods. Taking a seat, you gratefully accept an offered cup of caffeine.

"Do you have five or ten minutes?" You ask.

In his current state, it takes him a few moments before realization dawns. A mixture of excitement and uncertainty passes over him.

"Yes?" He asks, straightening. "What is it we are discussing, my friend?"

You explain the situation, and to your expectant disappointment his eagerness quickly fades. When you finish he is contemplative.

"She's a child," He says, staring down at his cup.

"Which is why I pleaded my case to the Inquisitor," You reply. "Now it's up to you and I to make sure this goes over smoothly. For everyone."

"Then it shall be so," Delmar says, his spark returning. "So the next question is: do we tell him in person, or risk a call over the vox?"

"I'm inclined toward in-person, to limit the chance of eavesdropping," You say. "But you make it sound like a bad idea."

"Gillian is a passionate man, in everything he does. Especially so when it comes to his little Anna. I do not believe he will take this news well, even by coming to him ourselves."

While seemingly friendly, you begin to doubt if the man is as innocent and harmless as he makes himself out to be. You're not too sure about finding out.

"We're working for the Inquisition," You say. "Chances are we will or already have run into something scarier than an angry father."

Delmar shrugs, uncertain.

"We'll talk," You decide. "In person."

"Perhaps that will be for the best," Delmar nods. "I'll make a call and see it done. Any suggestions?"

"Not his estate. Too many eyes. Do you have a place in the city you both know of?" You ask.

"I believe so," Delmar says. "I take it you're ready?"

"If you want we could wait."

"Not at all. Give me but a moment to become beautiful and I'll be prepared."

Rising from his seat, Delmar sets off at a quick pace to what you guess is a shortcut to his personal quarters. Shaking your head, you nurse two cups of caffeine until he returns, looking much more lively.

"He'll meet us in an hour's time," He announces.

"Well that was... easy," You note, uncertain.

"I told him it was important, though not in so many words," He grins. "Delmar is a man of subtlety and persuasion."

Rather than answering, you simply stand and signal for him to lead the way. After boarding his personal transport once more, he explains bits and pieces of his relationship with the nobleman.

"I knew him when he was much thinner," Delmar chuckles. "And poorer. At the time, I was not much better. As a pair of young men wanting to make a fortune, we helped one another turn a profit. For a time he was my employer, and we enjoyed a steady partnership. I was there when he first met his wife. A lovely woman, full of life. They were overjoyed when they found out she was expecting.

"It was a sad day when Alana passed. She died not long after giving birth to their daughter. Anna is his life now, but he misses his wife dearly. But, being the man that he is, Gillian tries to not let it show. Often. The place we're meeting him at is where we spent many a night drinking and planning and plotting. Where he also met his wife, believe it or not."

"Was that on purpose?" You ask.

"Possibly."

(Cont.)

>>34981822

To your surprise, Delmar orders the half dozen men and women making up his personal guard to remain on the ship.

"I won't be gone long," He assures them, then signals to you with a grin. "And look who I have with me. If he can see to Lady Massey, he can see to poor Delmar."

"I'll look after him," You promise the team.

As you both enter to crowded streets of the middle hive, you turn to the Captain.

"Just out of curiosity," You say. "But do you have anything on you?"

"I do," The Captain answers.

"Like?"

"If I told you that, it with ruin the fun."

You're not quite sure having to fight an attacker with a backup weapon would qualify as 'fun,' but you decide to let it slide.

After a lengthy walk Delmar stops at a bar of reasonable dispute called the Lusty Lady. You shake your head in distaste at the lack of originality, but Delmar only laughs and urges you inside. You decide on a booth, not out of the way but not in the crowd either.

It's a short time before Gillian appears, dressed more like an average Hiver. He smiles when he sees Delmar, but it lessens when he notices you.

"Del," Gillian says, sliding into the seat next to him. "What's this all about?"

The Captain looks to you.

>>

"Your daughter is in danger," You say.

Five simple words, but they have a serious impact. Gillian's eyes go wide, his expression one of surprise, then oddly, understanding.

"Noriega?" He asks.

You and Delmar exchange a look.

"Bastard," Gillian growls, taking that as a yes. "I knew it. I knew this would happen!"

"Calm yourself, Gillian," Delmar urges. "We're here to help."

"Explain," Gillian prompts, grinding his teeth.

"We've been assigned to kidnap your daughter to use her as insurance, to ensure you remain loyal," You say. "We'd rather tell the one who hired us to go off himself, but our hands are tied. Instead, we're here to try and see if you'll help us help you."

"You want me to hand over my daughter," Gillian states more than asks.

"Temporarily," You nod. "She'll remain in our custody, well away from the hands of the sympathizers. When things have been dealt with she'll be returned."

"How can I know you're not lying?" Gillian asks.

"Because I stand with him on this," Delmar answers. "On my life, I promise you the girl will remain unharmed so long as I breath."

Torn between suspicion and believing, the nobleman hesitates. Seeing this, your expression softens.

"I've taken a serious risk coming to you. I didn't have to, but I knew this wasn't right. So I beg you, let us help," You tell him.

Heaving a heavy sigh, Gillian looks at you with something resembling respect.

"Del," He says. "If I've ever trusted you, this is the time. Don't make me regret this."

(Cont.)
>>
>>34983224

"You won't," You assure him. "But you have to play your part, and it must be completely believable. Your daughter will be taken the night of the gala, and you're going to be furious. You won't know who did it for certain unless you're told. If Noriega has any reason to doubt you, we'll all pay for it."

"I understand," He grunts. "I don't like it, but I understand."

With that done, you've accomplished your goal of ensuring a bloodless transaction. As well as keeping your conscious clean. However, now is also a perfect time to ask a question or two...

>Question him. (What about? Do you let him know who you really work for?)
>He's had enough. Leave.

"Thank you for your time," You say, standing.

"Uh huh," Gillian nods. "I'll leave the backdoor unlatched. Just..."

"We'll do everything we can," You tell him, and with that you and Delmar take your leave. Joining the masses once again, you start back toward the transport.

"It was good of you to suggest someplace public," Delmar praises. "He's better with his temper with a crowd around."

"He didn't seem so bad, given the circumstances," You shrug.

"Perhaps he's calmed with age. Probably not. Still, I'm pleased to know you're as good of a man as I judged, Michael."

The actual use of your name stops you, and it leaves you feeling off-footed.

"You might want to rethink that one, Captain," You chuckle nervously.

"Delmar is never wrong," He grins. "Except when he is. Now, back home!"

Feeling pleased with yourselves, you head back to the ship. There you find, true to Christina's word, little to do in the way of work. The majority of her ground side agents are still out, and the gala isn't for several more days.

When the buzzer sounds he relaxes his grip on the training rifle and seems to take note of you.

"Lieutenant," He says as way of greetings.

"Trooper," You reply.

"Corporal, actually."

You take a place next to him, looking over the training rifle and deciding it will work. You look at him curiously at the statement, though.

"With Gabriel recovering and Jami being... Jami, I'm the only choice," He shrugs. "I didn't ask for it."

"Things like this happen," You nod. "So I take it you don't mind if I join you?"

"To be honest, I'd like to see this," Jonah answers, placing his own rifle down and crossing his arms, watching you.

You relax your body as the buzzer sounds, letting the background noise fade away. With the way the day's been going you're feeling fairly confident.

The first target springs up and you go to work.

You settle into a rhythm and stay there, catching some targets before they can fully raise. The rifle cracks at a steady pace, never being too quick or slow. It feels like ages, but that's not a problem to you. This is what you would call fun during down time.

The buzzer sounds again and you lower the rifle. Satisfied, you turn to Jonah to see him staring at you in surprise.

"Problem?" You ask him.

"From what the Sergeant told us you were horrible with a rifle," Jonah answers, honestly rather than teasing. "I see that that's not exactly the truth."

"We all have our moments," You shrug, placing the rifle back on the charging rack. "How's the rest of your team holding up, anyways?"

"Jami's more quiet than usual. Gabriel's talking regularly."

"And Roxy?"

"Getting ready to accept our new recruits. They're due soon."

"I'd almost forgotten about them," You admit, though you had helped pick them. "Ready for them, yourself?"

"I'll do as I'm told. Same as you. If that's all..."

Nodding, Jonah departs as you look at your score and nod. Not bad. Not bad at all.

"Well?" She asks.

"Everything went just as I planned," You tell her without a hint of sarcasm.

"Well, that's a nice change of pace," She chuckles. "Delmar told me as much. He gave you the majority of the credit which, I assure you, does not happen often."

"I try, ma'am," You shrug, abashed.

"So I take it you plan on staying again," She muses.

"Well, I mean, if-if that's a problem..." You once more grow flustered on the matter.

"It's nothing," She smiles, closing her book. "But if you're cooking again, I suggest we just stay in your room. Less walking on either of our parts."

"So long as you don't mind Jeeves."

"If I minded him he wouldn't still be around."

"Fair enough."

With that, you again settle into a pleasant evening with Christina. For once it's a strictly social event, with little new news to talk about concerning the rebels. It's a nice change of pace, even with your servants obvious amusement at the two of you.

Cleaning up, you both prepare for bed. It's an odd change, despite your rooms being more or less the same in design. Even so, you relax and hesitantly wrap an arm around Christina's waist.

Within a few minutes you drift off to sleep.

Wait... what's...?

Oh, no. No, no, no, no.

A sense of dread comes over you as you realize you're dreaming. It's slow to form, but the world around you forms and you relax ever so slightly.

It's Naomi's home.

You're standing on the grass looking over the scene. The light is darker than usual, and the wind is blowing. A few moment pass before thunder rumbles somewhere in the distance.

Nervously pacing back and forth next to the pool, underneath the swaying tree, is Naomi.

You don't want to be here, did what you could to not be, yet here you are. Taking a calming breath, you slowly approach her.

You're almost right next to you before she notices you.

"Michael!" She says, looking equal parts concerned and relived. "Where have you been?"

>"Where have I been? Where the hell were you?"
>"Oh, you know. Around."
>"What's going on? What's wrong?"

"Where have I been?" You ask, scowling. "Where the hell were you?"

At that Naomi visibly flinches.

"I'm sorry," She says. "I just... there was this lake of ice and... it looked so real..."

"So you thought you'd leave me on my own?"

"I told you not to push yourself!" Naomi snaps back. "And I thought you would follow me."

"I've got more important things to do here than sightseeing, lady," You tell her.

The thunder grows louder and the wind picks up. The light grows dimmer and Naomi's eyes go wide.

"W-what's going on?" She asks.

"I was about to ask you," You answer, not overly concerned. Oddly, you're not being affected by the wind.

Then you hear something and tense. Not a rumble of thunder, but the bark of an autogun.

"What was that?" Naomi asks, now shaking as she frantically looks around her. "Something... s-something bad's happening!"

You've heard a firefight before, but this isn't one you recognize like the others.

The door behind Naomi bursts open wide and shadows emerge, five in total. Naomi, terrified, stays rooted to the spot as they near.

Should you do something?

With a thought your lasgun is in hand. Then your on a knee, opening fire. However, while your rounds strike true they pass through the shadows like nothing.

"Naomi, run!" You shout. "Get out of here!"

Your words shake her out of her reverie, but she's still too afraid to act.

"I don't- this-" She backs away as the shadows grow ever closer.

"This isn't real!" You try to reason with her.

"Yes," She whimpers. "It is."

You turn to say something, but she's gone and darkness consumes you. You hear hurried footsteps, an occasional burst of gunfire, before they all come to an abrupt stop and Naomi gasps. Then there's another voice; male, and amused.

"End of the line, girlie."

"Please... plea-"

You wake the next morning in a sadly familiar state, bed a mess and in a cold sweat. Of all the questions that spring to you fatigued mind, the first is loudest.

Where's Christina?

You sit up in bed and wipe the sweat from your face, taking deep breaths to try and calm your heart-rate. Your head is aching as well.

Your head is spinning, so you try and concentrate on one thing at a time.

You don't really care to begin with, but it's early, so the halls are empty. You're not exactly looking your best.

You knock three times before opening the door, find Christina exactly as you had the night before. Book in hand, she greets you with a smile.

"Good morning, Lieutenant," She says. "Sleep well?"

At once your stomach sinks, though you're not entirely sure why. Something in her tone doesn't settle right.

"What... what did you do?" You ask.

"I didn't do anything," Christina answers. "I was called away last night and was pulled away. By the time I was finished it was early enough to just remain awake."

Part of you wants to believe her, but the rock in your gut remains there.

"Why?" She asks. "Did something happen?"

"As a matter of fact... yes," You admit, and take a seat.

You keep it short and to the point. Like before Christina listen patiently, though that same look returns to her eye as you finish.

"Anything else?" She asks.

"That about covers it, ma'am," You sigh. "It was brief."

"I'm glad it sounds like it's lessening," She nods. "Keep me aware of any new episodes. For now, look to yourself and get cleaned up. Are you alright?"

"I'll be fine, ma'am."

Preparing to leave, you hesitate at the door.

"This wasn't some sort of test, was it, ma'am?" You ask her, trying to sound joking.

She chuckles.

"Off you go, Lieutenant," She waves you on.

Not exactly telling you what you were hoping to hear, you head back to your room and try to recover. You grab a shower and a fresh set of fatigues. You're feeling somewhat better, but the whole thing still nags at you.

Still, you've got more important things to concentrate on. You can worry later.

Bit of a shitty move but this is actually a good time for me to end it here. Will try and stick to either doing quests on Friday's or Saturdays. We'll see.

Pic related, though I'm holding out for a lasting threesome. Still wouldn't mind throwing the Roxfags a bone sometime down the line and going full harem, though I personally prefer teasing her like a little sis.

Right, catching up. Hope the night's run isn't up yet...
>>
>>34991341
Well, I was far too late. Gonna have to write this quest's schedule down or something once we reestablish one
>>34989888
Jumping on the Roxy train here. As much as I want us to spend more time with Melodie, she'd stand out too much at the gala, and Roxy makes better backup on the off chance it goes ploin-shaped and we have to fight.
>>
>>34991695
We could take both of them, so they can play off each other and Rox can be the semi-sensible one to keep the techie in line.
Also, tbh, I don't think a relationship with a superior is a very good idea. Especially if that superior is an Inquisitor who has eaten through 12 other bodyguards already.
>>
>>34991341
>though I'm holding out for a lasting threesome. Still wouldn't mind throwing the Roxfags a bone sometime down the line and going full harem, though I personally prefer teasing her like a little sis.
Me too anon.

I saw we take Roxy to the Gala, and Melodi if she can wear a dress well

>>34994259
Anon, that's exactly why a relationship is a good idea, we know that this line of work will be the death of the both of us, in glorious service to the emperor, and by the holy throne, the Big E wants us to enjoy what little relative time we have.
>>
>>34989888
