Last time, you went on a shopping trip with Uzume where you met a crying girl with an oversized warhammer named Yashima. Moments later, two more girls arrived in a blast of thunder and lighting. You are currently on your knees with a piece of rebar piercing your chest.

You stumble, clutching at the piece of rebar lodged in your chest. Blood oozes out, staining your white shirt crimson. Your vision blurs, and you can only taste iron.

But.

But what?

You've felt this pain before. You will not break. It's not enough to put you down. Your fists slam into the concrete. More pain surges through your bruised and scraped knuckles. You gulp down the burning air and will your legs to move.

Unsteadily, shakily, but slowly you stand back up. You grab the rebar. In that moment, nothing else in the world matters. Inch by wicked inch, you pull it out. Fresh pain pumps through your nerves as the wounded flesh knits itself back together.

“Are you okay?” asks Yashima.

You place a hand on her shoulder.

“It's fine.”

You have no idea where you are, what's going on, why you're here. You can feel the surging euphoria in your fighter's heart.

“Don't fight,” she says, “You need to get out of here.”

Just before she would rush into battle with that leviathan maul, you grab Yashima and dash behind the corner of the department store.

“Let's make a break for it,” you say, popping your head out to survey the destruction. You don't see those oddly dressed twins. Three thoughts flit through your mind.

First, those outfits seem oddly familiar. Second, you don't actually have any idea where you're going. Third, if you can't see them, they're probably setting up an ambush. Chirping like a thousand birds wails in your ears, confirming the latter.

Your vision goes white for a moment. You stumble around in dazed confusion and pane. The acrid scent of burning flesh overwhelms your senses. Every movement hurts, as though a thousand daggers have been stabbed into each square inch of skin.

You hear the ringing sounds of battle. And Yashima's screams.

You shake it the black spots and look around. You can see Yashima standing her ground, dress torn and flesh burned. Blood trickles down one limp arm. The lightning twins have not fared so well either. You can see a hole in a brick wall through which one was smashed. That warhammer must hit hard. They circle Yashima like vultures over a wounded beast.

A memory comes back to you. A sensation of battle.

Armor. You remember your ironclad body, indestructible. Inevitable as death. (But what did you fight?) A dark liquid flows out from your pores, solidifying and hardening into a spiny, tough exoskeleton. As the visor comes to rest over your face, your vision turns red.

This feels right. This feels natural. Most importantly, this feels like the time for the cavalry to arrive.

Rolled 54 (1d100)

You charge forward, feet tearing gouges into the road with every step. They see you coming and clasp hands. The bolts cuts into your armor, but it holds. You stumble a step but keep bearing down on them.

Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Yashima jumping away onto a rooftop. Perhaps that figure from last night was just like the warhammer-wielding girl. One of the twins chases after her. The taller, bustier one remains to face your charge.

She panics as you close the last few paces. Her lightning flies erratically off, carving a gouge into a nearby building. Bricks and dust rain down you, but they cannot hold you down. You come in low, wrap your spiny arms arms around her legs. You drive your hips upward, taking her feet off the ground and drop. She hits the ground with a hollow, reverberating smack.

“What are you? Get away from me, you monster!”

You've definitely frightened her. She starts to scoot away from you as you stand up and approach her.

“No, no! Get away! Please!”

It doesn't matter that she could call down the wrath of a storm on you. Fear is the mind killer. Your gauntlet wraps around her neck and you lift her up.

“We're going to have a heart to heart talk. I want you to talk quick and talk honest.”

She kicks and squirms until you slowly return her feet to the ground.

She stares into your faceless visage, trembling.

“Who are you?”

“I'm Hikari... the other girl, my sister, is Hibiki.”

She's barely coherent in her terror.

“Why did you attack?”

Your grip on her soft neck tightens in anger. The sputters and coughs until you get control of your emotions and relax your hand.

“We were removing competition. It's for this thing called the Sekirei Plan. There's MBI, and one-hundred and eight of us.”

You grab her and sling her over your shoulder like a sack of potato. She squeeks and struggles in protest, but eventually settles down.

You go clamber up a fire escape until you are on top of the department store. The trail of destruction is obvious. The wind whips over the streamlined surface of your armor as you leap from roof to roof. Your legs absorb each impact and you never break stride.

You follow the signs. Scorches here. A crater there. Burning roofing. A smashed machine. The scene you arrive is not a pleasant one. Hibiki, whom you see is the one that Yashima had injured with one of her swings toys with other girl, content to hurl lighting until she finally falls. Yashima is on her last legs. Her chest rises and falls in exhaustion. Her hands are bloody and one of her legs involuntarily twitches.

You see Hibiki raise a hand, gathering in it the power of the storm. You urge yourself forward. Faster. You must intercept it, even if it means taking the hit yourself.

Lightning falls. Yashima hits the ground. At this moment nothing else matters. You cast aside Hikari and rush to her side. You drop the visor so that she can see your face. She reaches up and brushes a weak hand against your cheek.

“I want to say that I love you,” she says.

Then she collapses, comatose. You shake her, talk to her, beg and pray that she respond. She doesn't. You sit down and cry until the rhythmic percussion of strange flying machines reaches your ears.

Yashima never even knew your name.

Mea culpa doesn't really make sense in that context. "Through my fault for completely misreading..." You'd want "Mea culpa I completely misread..."

Alternatively, you could use Culpa mei. "The fault of me" or more colloquially "My bad".

“You, what's your name?”

“H-Hikari!”

You mutter “Fantastic. Pleased to meet you,” as you hoist her over your shoulder like a sack of potatoes. You can hear the roar thunder, and clamber up the rusty iron scaffolding on the side of the building.

“Be honest and be fast, or I will hurl you to the ground,” you growl, “Understood.”

“I understand,” she whimpers.

“Who are you two?”

“We're twins. She's Hibiki.”

You can see the trail of destruction and picture the battle. Lightning rains down, but Yashima rolls out of the way, smashing into one of those rumbling metal boxes on the roof. With that hammer of hers, she swings and sends it flying at Hibiki. What a fight! You hope she's okay.

“Why did you attack?”

“Competition. We want to knock out the competition early.”\

“Explain. Further.”

“There are one-hundred and eight of us – us Sekirei. We're out trying to find our loves, but in the Plan there can be only one. So we figured we would knock a weakling out of the bracket.”

These words jumble together and float around in your head. She's halfway hysterical, so you weren't expecting much. It's something. Infinitely more than what you had before.

You arrive at the scene of the battle. Both girls are hurt and weakened. Hibiki, the twin, looks like she's been smashed through several walls. Looking at the wreckage, that's probably what happened. Yashima breathes heavily, and one of her legs is twitching involuntarily.

“S-sis, I thought you said you had him handled!”

You jump onto the roof and glare at the other lightning twin from behind your menacing visor.

“Get out of here,” you command calmly.

Hibiki starts to turn but pauses, paralyzed with indecision, as she stares at her sister. You frown and throw Hikari at her twin who catches her. They run faster than a cat with its tail on fire.

“Yashima,” you say, “Are you okay?”

“I-I'm fine.”

Her cheeks are flushed, and she unsteadily walks toward you. You let the armor recede as you catch her in your arms. She looks into your eyes, smiles, and suddenly pulls you down into the deepest kiss you've had in your life.

You can't say that you expected the wings.

I have no problem with hissy fits. I have a problem with people being wrong.

But Hell, enjoy the quest. I bet Jagow's never going to give you any more meaningful choices - your options will be "win", "win more", "win differently", and "write how you win" from now on, because he knows the kind of shit he'll get if he does anything else. If that's your thing, power to you.

It's not what I enjoy, and that's why I'm getting out.

I'm not going to stop having choices that can have undesirable consequences.

This is a case of me rereading the vote and realizing I simply did not read it correctly.

Bad things can still happen. They won't be glaringly obvious like "Pick X to die," but details and the way small choices pile up do matter.
>>
>>34967137
To be fair, if we were previously able to interrogate a girl and then haul her over our shoulder and catch up to Yashima just in time to watch her die, it makes sense to be able to catch up when only doing the latter.

I still don't think the QM should have caved as hard as he did, though.
>>
>>34967415
Actually, this thread was set to end in my notes either with Yashima's termination or winging. It wasn't a snap decision of appeasement
>>
>>34967415

>>
>>34967480

You'll have to clarify: are you actually attempting to imply that people read Sekirei for characterization and story? A manga that's about a jobless guy who couldn't get into college and his his harem of big-titty aliens who are basically programmed to go out and find some random person to "love".

Speaking of titty aliens, I kind of hope we end up hanging out with Akitsu. Mainly because Mikogami is an asshat and nothing good ever happens for her in the manga.

Plus, it would give us a reason to fight for the Jinki, since they could potentially be used to "unscrap" her.

It looked more like she got her wings through Mikogami's paranoid self-loathing resonating so strongly with her that Magic (TM) happened. That's hardly a ringing endorsement.

Also, Gokurakuin seems to keep killing the best girls. First Uzume and then Akitsu.

He went on about how the people around him were so terrible, except for the brainwashed aliens, and exclaimed that the Sekirei were all he had. Then Akitsu tears up, talks about her own self-loathing, and can magically be winged and sent to die.

If that was a friendship speech, it was a really bad one

Isn't, like the whole series bad?
>>
>>34974708
Worse: it's bland.

I mean, the set-up is actually really good. You could write a lot of good stories about 108 aliens who bond and pledge themselves to humans and are being forced by a megacorp to fight in what amounts to a series of death matches.

Unfortunately, Sekirei is a seinen harem manga, and the core demo for this sort of thing doesn't want an examination of what life would be like in Tokyo if a bunch of random people were bonded to super-powered aliens who would obey their commands. They want tits and some light violence, so to avoid offending the audience, that's what they're getting. With a side of "bonds of friendship are the true strength" since that's super-popular in Japan right now.

It's a lot like Freezing, actually. There's so much more that could be done with the setting.
>>
>>34975054
Yeah, like the UN shutting MBI down.

I think that Gabe is a pretty good writer, but the flaws in his work are exacerbated the longer it goes on. I legitimately enjoyed 'Debt of a Sword,' but 'In Flight' has all of his usual problems, starting with his length, and cookie cutter protagonist. I gave up on it about a third of the way through, and I'm not wading through the length of 'War and Peace' in bullshit to find out how it ends.
>>
>>34975859
Oh, he absolutely shafts the Nasuverse. I don't like his writing much, but I think he deserves some credit.

The best Sekirei fanfic that I have read was 'Postnuptial Disagreements,' which I especially admire for its pacing in a world of "longer = better."
