Welcome elders of the Golem. Lead the way to our future.

For those new:
This is still my first quest and English is not my native language. So I take a little more time (look at chapter 1).

Here is Chapter 1:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/34856128/

To summeraize:
Two settlements both in mountain valleys:
-Gneik (holy site)
-Etticatran (copper)

Tech:
The Civ till now:
Tech:
-Basic Farming
-Hunting
-Basic Cloth
-Stone huts
-Copper working

Available Military units:
-Stone slinger
-Hunter/Scouts
-Copperwarrior

Traits:
-Mountainous
-Dancing
-Hero legend

With the war against the Krull over, the elders had to answer one big question. What do we do with the freed slaves?
We lost many men so we could use those additional people. But on the other hand they are barbarians with savage behavior, brutalized by the Krull. If we let them integrate with us their vicious traits may find a way into our character. We could set them free forcing them to settle to the north as vassals. Or simply force them to settle far far away. And there are the more radical voices. Some say to kill them all others argument “They were slaves and they should stay slaves …our slaves.”

>[ ] let them found a vassal settlement
>[ ] integrate with them
>[ ] forceful displace them
>[ ] enslave them
>[ ] kill them
>>
>>34882174
Sacrifice them to the gods.
>>
>>34882453
To shibalba?
>>
>>34882453
I count that as kill them all. But if this is whast most players want the sacrifice seems a good idea
>>
>>34882534
give it a while to see if anyone else has an idea.
the way I see it leaving a band of savages in our midst would be a terrible idea, worse still would be giving them their own village so they can build their numbers and forces and take vengence.
>>
>>34882554
Okay seems like there are not that many anons lurking.
I will wait. Maybe some other anons are reading through chp. 1 or so.
>>
>>34882174
>[X] integrate with them
>>
We should let them go as vassals, but enforce an Israelite in Egypt kind of deal where they can only have one child and i mostly has to be a girl.
>>
>>34882757
>>34882729
Samefag or are this two different voices?

Settle them in the north as vassals, we can levy tribute and forces from them when needed.

No it's okay. Just wanted to know.

Something that constantly reminds them they are indebted to us. That we're the reason they still live.
the 'Freed' sounds ok, or something with a similar meaning.

Despite the anger of some of the warriors the elders stopped a massacre and gathered the slaves old and young, men and women.

They would still be free but enslaved. They would have to adopt our language, our dances, our ways of life. They would be the shield to the north. If an enemy would come ever again from the northern wilderness those ‘Freed’ would be the first obstacle.
To ensure that they won’t betray us, warriors would be stationed there and above all those people were able to farm, to work to accumulate riches, just as long as they stay at the place that should be now called Sarb.

They would be able to choose their own leader but a governor from either Gneik or Etticatran would put a close eye on them.

And so the Freed settled. We showed them the art of farming told them our stories were the stoners gave the wanderers a helping hand in their time of need.
But while the Freed settled the elders began to wonder. What if the Krulls were not the only tribe that made their living by looting, raping and killing.
What should we do to further minimize the risk to be destroyed by force? Should we settle single families on the outskirts of our land that should inflame signaltowers? Should we take the most distinguished warriors and order them that they and their sons and their sons had just one task is to train for war? Or should we fortify our settlements?

>[ ] Signaltowers
>[ ] Warriorcaste
>[ ] Fortifications
>>
>>34883109
My vote goes towards fortifying out settlements. Signal towers are a great idea as well, while the surrounding lands of our settlements are fortified.

Unless selecting both of those isn't available?
>>
>>34883109
Warrior caste.
Let's go full Sparta (Hollywood Sparta, mind you, not the historical one)
>>
>>34883274
Nope limited resources (people, tools, etc.)
>>
Fortify. Our great leader Etticatran knew the virtue of not starting a fight, and we must live by what he taught, for he was the greatest of the Golems.
>>
>>34883274
I'll stick with fortification of the settlements, then.
>>
>>34883399
This sounds like solid advice.
I go with fortify, our homes shall be as sturdy as the mountains.

The elders were wise. While we Golems were brave warriors the losses were too heavy. Never again should we stay undefended. That is why at the main entries to the valleys of Gneik and Etticatran huge walls out of massive stones were build. New methods were invented to form massive blocks of stones out of mountains. And to cary them to the building sides.
The Freed of course had to help to carry the stones. And after several years those walls were the pride of our people. The settlements were filled the laughter of children. The Golem prospered but the stories and dances about the wanderers were kept in the hearts of the people. Stories and dances filled with wonders. And years after the Krull invasion voices (mostly of the young ones that haven’t witnessed the fights firsthand) were raised to send once again scouts out into the world.
But the last time scouts were send, they haven’t brought any riches but the fury of the barbarians with them.

Should our people stay for themselves or should we once again explore the world?

>[ ] Send scouts. The blood of the wanderers runs strong in our veins
>[ ] Lets stay and improve ourselves. We have all that we need here
>>
>>34883708
>send scouts
We should maintain our scouting traditions. Our walls are only sturdy defences so long as we know what is coming our way.

>>
>>34883708
Majority rule- Scouts are my vote as well.
>>
>>34883708
damnit, I forgot that since this isn't officially a quest, nobody announces that its up anywhere.

Make camps. Small stations with a permanent campfire, meagre shelter and a small amount of supplies. Should make it easier for the scouts to travel, at the cost of slowing them down.

the time for the wheel and the road is still far away.

Once agein scouting parties were send out into the world. And like many years ago the scouts returned at different times. Some came back and showed bones of strange animals, some came back with strange hides. But one scouting party that crossed the dense forests in the west came back after one years with a important massage. They met another settled tribe.
As the Elders called for the scouts they answered:

“This new tribe calls themselves the Kátochos. Their biggest settlement was located on a hill but most of their people lived seminomadic lives with huge animals. Those animals had horns and looked dangerous but despite their appearance they were quite docile. Because they used their horns for communication we thought that they were Krulls. But after watching them from quite some time we came to the conclusion that they were a different tribe. We approached them and they reseived us well offering us food and water and a drink they made out of the milk of those “cows”. We felt great and happy after drinking it.
We told them of our coppertools and showed them our daggers which they thought of highly. They proposed to us that we could exchange greater quantities of our coppertools for their cowproducts. While I think we could hold some cows for ourselves, we don’t have space enough to hold larger herds of those animals.”

As the elder discussed the possibility of ‘trade’ a second scouting party came back. This time from the north. And while they told us of tribes similar cruel and warlike like the Krulls they also told us of a river with salty water and so large that they could not see the other side. The brought back golden shining stones (amber) that were most beautiful. Especially the women loved those stones.

Should we invest our human resources by sending trade parties to exchange with the Kátochos or should we send gathers into the cold north?

>[ ] trade
>[ ] gather
>>
>>34884156

It'll be better if we build facilities for these "cows" and make it easier to travel before making trade parties.

Also, amber should be good for trading.

Good point! Haven't thought of that. Well since most people want to go for the amber this won't affect the Golem people. But still mea culpa

Months passed but finally they came back. Or at least most of them. One was killed while crossing a wild river. Others lost their lives while fighting off barbarians. But despite all this hardships they brought back a huge amount of amber.
But could the losses be worth it?
> [ ] Continue to send gatherers into the north when our stockpiles are low
> [ ] The same as first option, but the usage of the amber is highly restricted
> [ ] Stop this amberstuff. It is just a different stone! We have enough stones! Look here! Stones everywhere stones!

But this wasn’t the only problem. While our valleys are highly fertile we are havening more and more people. Feeding those won’t be easy on the long turn. People are starting to plant crop outside the walls. We as the elders could of course order the lesser families to stop this practice. A clever young lad came up with the idea to build terraces so that we have more room for farming in the valley. But this additional work will maybe upset the people.
>[ ] build terraces. WE know what is good for those lesser people
>[ ] we have Sarb and the Freed as our forward defense. The people can farm also outside the walls
>>
>>34884678
>[ ] The same as first option, but the usage of the amber is highly restricted
Amber is only used for trading or crafting. Only those who use it best can have it, to encourage skill in the arts.

At least, until we have a settlement in the north. Speaking of which, Freed are free to join, and if they do, they are given more rights and freedom in exchange for still being on the frontline.

>Terraces
We need more fortifications and space for cows anyway.
>>
>>34884761
These sound good, seconding this course of acion.
>>
>>34884678
> [X] Continue to send gatherers into the north when our stockpiles are low

Newfag here, we should continue to collect this, maybe trade some to Katochos in exchange for these "cows", after all we can use them to help feed our people.

The Golempeople were anything if not industrious. In the valleys stones were moved. Earth was raised up. And soon the mountains became greener as terraces piled up and looked like the stairways for the gods themselves. As a side effect the losses of lives because of avalanches during winter dropped. Nether less the people thought less of the elders. If they forbid to farm outside the walls would they forbid even more?
The amberparties travelled north every 3 years. It was regarded as a man’s duty to travel up north at least once in his life. But because nobody wanted to weaken the defense of the land the notion came up to allow Freed to accompany us. Sharing the hardship of weather, animal and foe, the distance between Freed and Golem reduced itself. Friendships were established and with it trust. While the official laws were still strict the voices of our most valiant warriors led to a de facto equality.

The amber itself was used to craft beautiful jewelry. The simplest polished ambers were used as a currency. But trade between people and the existence of something ‘very valuable’ led to ‘those that have’ and those that ‘have not’. Envy started to spring up between the people. So much that one night a man killed his neighbor because he had more amber and boasted himself with it.
How should we react to those developments?

>[ ] Humans were always like that, now there is just more to quarrel about. And besides it is only fair those that work harder get more. Do nothing.
>[ ] This is only because there isn’t enough amber here. We need more, more and again more! Send more parties.
>[ ] If new amber is brought into the valleys we should give those that have least the most. Try to balance things out.
>>
>>34885318
On the fence about this one. Our people should champion hard work and it's rewards, but we should take care that we do not grow to lack compassion like the Krull our ancestors fought against.

What say you fellow elders?
>>
>>34885318
>[ x ] Humans were always like that, now there is just more to quarrel about. And besides it is only fair those that work harder get more. Do nothing.
>>
>>34885364
LAW!!!
>>
>>34885318
>Teach those who have not. If they show promise, reward them. If they only complain, give them nothing.
This isn't enough, so:
>Those who DO have amber must prove themselves in monthly or yearly festival/tournaments, where the best of the best compete.
If they do well, they keep their amber, and a certain amount of amber is reserved for them. If they do poorly, it is from them that amber is given to those who show promise.

I gotta go to bed, so:

>Freed
Inquire if they have explored their own culture. Do they paint? Write?

>Farming outside walls
The simplest solution for the future is to build new outer walls. When it is deemed safe, the land can be tilled, with preference for lesser families.
>>
>>34885444
Ach, before I forget:

>All entries to the festivals/tournaments are freely distributed to the people. Either random or as prizes from other games, like dancing.

>>
>>34885444
The festival distribution system is a option

>[ ] Establish festival of amber
>>
>>34885647
My vote is on this one, I figure it suited nicely compared to the options we originally had...

The first choice sounds like it would lead to barbarism, which we fought against before in the past.

Then inflation for the other options, by lessening the implied worth through abundance or through charity.

I'm normally for charity in that regard to balance class systems, but... It feels wrong in this sense when we're only just forming a currency system.

Keep it as a ritualistic status thing through festivals, perhaps something else will become proper currency instead for different reasons?
>>
>>34885745
Seconding this.
It enables control of the goods but not in a way that establishes a 'have' and 'have not' system, the public celebration of the goods enables all to posses it to some quantity more or less.

Instead of killing each other over amber an elder came out with an idea so natural and so good that all the other elders were silence for a moment only to proclaim their overwhelming support. We couldn’t let this amber destroy the bonds we shared with each other, but on the other side after several years it was too strong routed into the hearts and minds of the ordinary people. To ban it would have led to revolt.
Soon the festival of amber was announced. Each family should nominate one representative for each contest. Those that had the most amber could only defend their possession. If they lost in a competition they had to give a share of the amber to winning one, if those had less amber.

The competitions were various dances, dances that told stories, dances to court the other gender and always as a grand finale the war dances. Those were held at night and were illuminated with dozens of torches. The men danced and their swords shining in the light of the flames danced with them. The so called ‘amberwounds’ that some had suffered were as great a sign of manhood as the wounds someone has suffered from a Krull while traveling north.
>>
Okay I am on my way.

>amberwounds
Sounds cool.

>>34886130
Well for names we can just follow a general theme born from the name of our great hero, Etticatran.
Names with double consonants such as 'tt' that typiclly start with vowels and have multiple syllables may be the norm.

Perhaps these names would actually mean something if we "translated" them into English.

For example:
Arrateban, meaning 'Born of the Amber' (lit: 'Amber to Born')
Could indicate someone born of a high status family.

As for clothing, I kind of picture them to have an inuit aesthetic, with decorative carved bone / wood jewellery, or amber of course, if the family is high status.

Some would say that at that time our greatest strength was our engineering, some would say it was our urged to explore but it was our ability to adopt us so that even with more people stability of the society was not an issue. The elders were respacted and led our people, while even the young ones and those without possession could shine at the amber festival. The Freed worked as the Golem, danced their dances and bleed as they fought with us in the north.

One event changed all:
Ittelia was daughter of an elder. Raised to dance and to tell stories to worship the gods of the mountains. She was not only young but also beautiful. Always acting as the perfect daughter. But she had a secret.
The night was chilly as always even during summer and she moved quietly through a secret path to avoid the Wall.
Near a small stream waited Grun. Since the day she met him, as she was with her farther to celebrate the return of the Northwalkers (those that bring the amber), she knew he was the one, the only one.

The weak starlight showed the outlines of his body and his many wound. Without a word she fell into his arms. They spend the night together and enjoyed each other. As she lied on him he pushed her hair back
“I know how we can be together …” he said than

“But we are together.”

“Not like now …I want to marry you.”

She looked at him shocked “That is not possible and you know that! You will be banned!”

“That is why I said I have a plan …”

She hesitated but stayed “I will listen…”

“This Amberfestival I will fight. I will dance and I will win, than nobody is going to think less of me.”

“This is madness. You can’t win. Some sons of the elders spend their time only with wardancing.”

“And most of them never were in a real fight! Those that could stop me are my friends.”

“Friends? Golem friends?”

“What have you thought? That I came up with that plan alone? No. Allemakan always uses his bonemask while fighting or wardancing. I will take up his place. But I won’t do this only for us, but also for my people.”

Ittelia looked unsure. “And if you lose?”

“I won’t be unmasked. I promise I won’t do stupid thing.”

“Fighting as a masked fighter during the Amberfestival so that you can propose to the woman you love sounds like a stupid thing. And I…

And so the day came. Everyone cooked their best, children played around and the mood couldn’t be better. But of course the highlight was the wardances.
Above everyone was Allemakan. Veteran of two trips into the wild north. He danced with great determination and fury, evading every strike, blow and stroke.
During the finals he danced like it is told that Etticatran danced at the height of the Krullinvasion and defeated his last opponent.

According to the plan Grun revealed himself, telling how his people are raised like the golem, talk like the Golem, dance like the Golem, eat like the Golem and love like the Golem.

And so the Freed became Golems by right. Of course not everyone was happy with this decision. Some of the poorer Golems haven’t had anything they could be proud of but at least they could say they were something better than those Freed. Also only because they should be the same didn’t meant that you couldn’t tell a Freed from a Golem apart because of their different names.

Meanwhile the scouts brought further news from the world out there. Telling stories that in the south huge animals lived in rivers and of several different and new metals. One that shines like the sun when being highest, another shined like the moon, others were dull but hard.

But the greatest invention came through an accident: A smith has accidentally molten some of the new metals and copper into one and came up with a material that was hard but flexible. It was a marvelous invention. But to repetition it proved to be difficult since he hadn’t enough samples.
Intelligent people looked up into the nightsky sawing not chaos but order counting the moons and the different cycles.
One came up with a crazy idea. To get the whole view, the Golems should build a real stairway to heaven. Carving steps into the stone to the top.

What should the Golem people do since we don’t have enough people to do everything? Sending parties to collect more of those new metals, especially those that could be needed for this new material? Or build a stairway to heaven?
