Part 7

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, and you have just made an interesting discovery. The girl you had thought to be a simple religious student is in fact the youngest daughter of the previous king, and the bandits that had attacked you had in fact been targeting her.

After a rather traumatic night, in which you had killed a man and her religious guardian Adelheid had broken her vow of chastity, the day opens cold and bleak.

Your party convenes in the common room. Ioveta sits far from her guardian, who in turn sits shame faced against the furthest wall. The soldier Theodore watches your party warily, a spotted hand on his pommel.

For the most part your party is blind to the events of the night before, but Solomon sits with crinkled brow, a look of vague misery on his face as he surveys the opposing party.

Ioveta looks to you as if she wants to say something, but closes her mouth before long and settles back for her far gazed musing.

> we need to talk (speak about the night before openly with your party)
> we best be off (gather the party to travel without disclosing last night's revelations)

I was okay with where last thread was going, might as well replicate it.

Also do you have a twitter? I wasn't sure when you were starting today.

>we best be off (gather the party to travel without disclosing last night's revelations)

you might just want to start where we left off, i plan on just replicating last thread.
>>
(I'm going to speed through some of the stuff already covered unless y'all throw me for a loop and do something different)

You consider your friends, and you consider the party opposite. Your men all seemed rather hung over and irritable. Probably not the best time to bombard them with potentially dangerous information.

"Well there's no time for slacking," you say, "Best get back on the road." It's a long road down to Arsur, and not without risk. Your men gather with a collected grumble. Judith, that is Ioveta, assembled with you.

She cast you uncertain glances as she packed her little mule, and pointedly ignored Adelheid when the nun came to assist her.

As you were leaving the craftsman came up with your helmet tucked under his arm.

"Sir," he said, presenting it to you.

The lion looked as if it were snarling, fangs still hanging from its mouth, framing the eye slits of your helm. The length of its mane fell down around the shoulders and the rest of its pelt formed a draping cape. It really was good work.

> acquired the Lion Helm (+1 War, +1Cha, +1 Lead, - to piety, -2 damage)

Adelheid in particular looks on the helmet with disgust.

"Like the pagan Hercules, or some fur skinned barbarian," she said it so distastefully.

"My thanks sir," you said, sending the craftsman on his way.

On the road and with your new information, you realise new precautions will have to be made. Particularly considering how far the next decent sized city was.

Before you fully depart, the gambler from the night before slinks out from behind the stables, a sack in hand.

"Sir," he said, handing the sack to you.

You open it to see a gleaming array of coins, of various different make.

"Your winnings, sir," he said, thumbing his forehead.

You are surprised, you would have thought a gambling man would have disappeared with the coin. "I make my reputation on honest games," he explained, "And that was honestly won. Give my regards to the young miss." And with that the gambler slunk off again, leaving you 130 pfennings richer.

Back to the matter at hand, you ask Franz to ride ahead to scout. He takes off with a grumble and a grin, begrudgingly happy for some time alone.

With the road before you, you duck back to ride alongside 'Judith' on her mule. She still seems uncertain by your presence, keeping her eyes afield and only briefly looking up at you. There was discomfort writ all over her posture. It was a marked change from her previous enthusiasm.

You keep quiet, just riding in companionable silence with the girl.

"So," she said, casting a look up at you. She tugs at your new lion skin cape, "Is there a story to go along with this...thing?"

There was, of course, but how much of it was suitable for her ears? That was a question. Should you tell her about the whole trip from Acre to Sidon, the lion savaging Alain and the flight to Tyre to try and save him. Should you mention your indiscretions with the women on that journey? Or just keep it to the lion itself. Your instincts as a story teller were flying in several directions.

Still, the girl looked like she could use a story.

"This?" you say, "A memento from my first adventure in the Holy Land."

"Oh?" a bit of that curiosity came back to her eyes.

"It was a little after meeting Solomon. We were hired by an old crippled knight to escort his daughter to Sidon. A wedding, and we rode with her cousin who was likewise a knight. Sir Alain. A band of slaves to carry her in shelter, a maid to see to her needs, and us to guard her from danger.

'Twas only a few days into our trip when trouble began. A lion attack. It ambushed Sir Alain, killing his horse and doing him grievous injury, a mighty swipe to the face that tore it to ribbons.

"I slew the lion then and there. A single thrust of my spear through its eye and into the brain. A good, clean kill.

I ordered Solomon to take the man and ride ahead to Tyre, but it was for not. The man perished from his wounds after torturous days in the care of the church."

You make the sign of the cross, as does Ioveta.

"Jehanne, the lady we were escorting, was greatly distressed. Her kinsman was dead, and our trip was naught but half way through. It was in the coming days that we were most tried. An ambush on the road to Sidon, and a storm under which the slaves fled. We found some shelter in a farming community and we...we enjoyed ourselves. Music, dancing, distractions from our trials.

In the end we delivered the girl to her betrothed.

I suppose I keep this lion skin to remind me of that adventure, the troubles we found and the friends made."

"It's a very dashing outfit," she said, again fingering the hide. "I heard a story that in ancient days Roman soldiers would wear animal skins as a mark of prestige, and that some kingdoms in Africa still did the same." You shrugged, you couldn't say who did it. In truth you were inspired by Hercules. What man wouldn't aspire to be like that ancient Greek hero, at least in some respects. "This Lady was lucky I think, to have you as a protector," Ioveta said, "Was she beautiful?"

honestly I stated this last thread that if our cock gets involved its going to be a far more overt powerplay for the throne than say if we placed Hugo in our stead, not only that but we may be spun as a power hungry heaven thanks to our new Helm.

Honestly I think if we are making our play for power we do this two ways 1) through the undecided lords of the realm & we bide our time until the civil war is at a halfway point or 2) a populist uprising by going full Liu bei for now.

"Very," you say. Lady Jehanne had been an uncommon beauty, that was true. "Very beautiful."

You think on how you'd last seen her, ragged and beat down by the drudgery of house work. A woman like that was not meant for scrubbing floors. "She had hair like fire," you say, "And skin like fresh milk. Her husband was very lucky.

You smile at the young princess. "I find myself much in the company of beautiful women since coming to the Holy Land. Truth, it's one of the charms of the place."

Judith, that is Ioveta, blushed a little but smiled broadly. It was good to see her mood improve.

Before you could say much more a cry came from the back of your party.

Chihirizahd was recoiling from Adelheid's raised club.

Before you spur off to deal with this interruption you look to 'Judith'. "I've the gambling winnings from last night. Come find me later if you want them," you say with a slight wink before head off to deal with the quarrel.

Chihirizahd was recoiling from a furious Adelheid, her club raised to strike. Chihirizahd had a bruise forming on her face.

"Muslim slut," the nun was seething.

"What is this?" you demand, putting your horse between the two women.

"Nothing, master," Chihirizahd said, bowing low.

"This whore of yours was going through my property," Adelheid said, brandishing her crucifix in the other hand, "She was riffling through my baggage."

"Is this true?" you ask your slave.

Chihirizahd looks up at you fearfully. "Yes master, in a way," she said, "I was hoping to find some cotton swadding. I am...bleeding." She motioned to her nether region, eyes cast in shame.

You had sisters, you were aware of the pain of women's divine punishment. But it wasn't one that wholly occupied your mind.

"I had tried to ask the woman," she cast eyes toward Adelheid, "But she refused to hear me."

You dismount from your horse, and you slap Chihirizahd hard across the cheek.

She dropped to her knees and held up her hands to you. "Forgive me master," she whimpered. You pulled her onto her feet.

"If you need anything, you come to me first," you say, "I will get it for you. You do not steal from others, even if they are being stubborn and your need is great."

Then you looked to Adelheid. The nun was smiling a little. "Do you have what she needs?" you ask.

The nun hesitated before nodding. "I do," she said, producing cotton bindings from her baggage. She handed them to you, and you handed them to Chihirizahd.

"Thank you master," she said through some tears.

"And why did you not give them when she asked?" you said to the nun.

Adelheid shrugged. "She is a Muslim and a whore."

"Does the book not say 'judge not, lest you be judged'?" you asked.

"That's one translation," the nun replied.

"Then let's go with another, 'let those who are without sin throw the first stone', can you say you are truly without sin, Sister, to call another a whore?" you say it pointedly, and her wide eyes tell you she knows to what you refer.

"And if that is not enough," it takes some effort to keep your anger in check, "This woman is my property, and damage to my property is damage done to me. Be very careful when next you strike something of mine, Sister."

The words turn her very pale and she nods. "O-of course, sir."

"Then let us be friends," you say with a smile, "And carry on in good company 'til Arsur."

She nodded with half a bow. As you remounted and rode back to the head of the company, you saw a cat-like smile break across Chihirizahd's face.

'Judith' watches for your return with a curious look.

"What was the commotion?" she asked.

"Nothing serious," you replied.

"You've had a tale, now how's about one in return?" you ask, "Tell me how you came out here 'Judith'." You very carefully use her alias.

The girl shifted on her mule. "Well it started up in Antioch," she said, "I was visiting my sister and my niece. We had more guardians then. But my oldest sister sent a letter asking if we could come to visit her. Now my other sister had to stay and deal with a local matter, but I thought to head off early and visit some of the shrines along the way. So we toured through Galilee. It was in Galilee where fever took Sister Ysbette, a wise old woman. We buried her at a shrine to Mother Mary. And on the way to Acre we were set upon a number of times by...bandits. It was shocking. We were nearly taken. Sir Jean led a counter-attack and said we'd meet at Acre but he never arrived."

She had her eyes cast forward as she gave some of the names of the men in Sir Jean's company. "He'd been a templar," she explained, "And a good friend."

"We were told the valley would be a short cut to Jerusalem," she said, "When your band arrived I worried you might also be 'bandits'. God's providence was smiling upon us."

"We were told the same," you said.

"And that is how we came to meet," she said, "I might say more but..." she looked to your men with suspicious eyes.

It was wise not to speak too openly on such matters, but still it frustrated you to hear only half the story.

"You can trust my men," you said, "Within reason. But if there are things you wish to say but cannot, find me later when we make camp and we will continue this conversation in private."

A light blush lights 'Judith's' cheeks. "Yes, in private," she said.

The day passes into night as Franz returns with nothing to report.

Your camp is assembled. Hugo pitches your simple tent and Chihirizahd settles within. Theodore helps Sister Adelheid erect two others for themselves and your companions.

Once that was done Franz set to the task of cooking a quick dinner.

It was not wise to leave your camp unprotected, even if Franz had uncovered no danger.

Chihirizahd lounges against your saddle-for-a-pillow. You set up your shatranj board as 'Judith' ducked in with her own food. She hesitated at the sight of your slave, but sat across the board.

"A game?" you ask, offering her the board.

Judith crossed her legs and wobbled the tall queen piece. "Mhm," she nodded.

"Chihirizahd, fetch us something to drink," you say, scooting the woman off your saddle with an open palm.

"Yes master," she replied, slinking off.

Iovetta was considered the board intensely when you turned your attention back to her. She moved a pawn.

"So who exactly are these bandits?" you ask, straight to the point.

She waves a hand. "Some of them are bandits," she said, "But the attacks aren't random. In the first such attack Sir Jean said one of the men was an officer in Lord Zengi's court. He is known to have designs on Antioch and Tripoli. Perhaps he thought I'd make a suitable hostage."

You took one of her pieces.

"My father was taken hostage once, when I was very small. His captor won a fortune in ransom, and I was held in his place. I remember very little of it though. Four years old and all."

"I doubt my brother-in-law would pay such a fine ransom as all that, but it would embarrass him greatly. For me to be taken in the heart of his land makes us look weak," she moved a knight, "And truth, Lord Zengi has a reputation when it comes to women."

You had heard something of that from Malik.

You moved in to close a trap, and her frown grew stronger as she considered her next move. "There's a rumour he's courting the mountain men, the death cult of the Assassins. If that's true, well, no where is safe. They have people every where."

You'd heard some tales of the legendary Assassins.

"That might explain how wide spread your problems are," you say, putting her in check, "Surely Zengi cannot muster great numbers this far into the kingdom."

Chihirizahd returned with water and cups, she served you both and knelt by the board, eyes down cast.

"Truth," Iovetta said, "And damn! I just saw that!" she punched you in the shoulder as your trap closed, taking her king. She sat back and drank the water, considering you.

"Chihirizahd, can you tell me what you know of the mountain people, the death cult of assassins?"

The girl shrugged. "I know what I hear," she said, "That they worship death. That they are fanatics that will gladly die for their cause, to be rewarded with many virgins in the next life. That they imbibe hashash and other things to give them visions of their god's will and to make them truly fearless in combat. Many stories I have heard, from where I have been kept. One man even boasted that he had been to their citadel in the mountains."

You consider the girl. Should you be suspicious of her?

"Whatever they are, they are rightly feared," Iovetta said, reassembling the board, "Even in the cloister we hear tales of them."

They are a dutiful lot, but we underestimated the effort. Our numbers were cut quick until we had only Theodore left. He's a good man, one of my grandfather's old retainers, but he is old and makes mistakes."

You frown as your attacking line starts to dissolve.

"And Adelheid. I had thought her a good woman, looked up to her greatly in the cloister," she gave you a suspicious look, "It seems the world has a way of testing us in unexpected ways. Of everyone to break a vow, I had never thought she would be one to do so."

Wait, what? She had caught your king in a perfect trap. Iovetta sat back, pleased with her victory.

Iovetta helps you put away your shatranj set, holding up the carry sack for you to slid it in.

"Hmm," she bites her lower lip, "I'd thought to see my cousin Hugh. He is count of Jaffa, and a good friend. Really more a brother in some ways. He was a supporter of my father, and loved him dearly. If any would give armed escort it would be him."

Hugh of Jaffa, word had it he was fomenting rebellion against King Fulk. It was rumoured he and the queen were closer than was decent.

"About Sister Adelheid," you say. She carefully backs a step, brush loose hair back behind an ear. "We all stray from the righteous path," you say, "But its how we hold ourselves after we sin that define us. Not our sins alone."

She turned your words around, twining her fingers in her lap as she did so.

I'm just going to step in on this issue and say, definitively, that there is no chance of a peasant uprising working. Peasants are not soldiers, the peasants of the Holy Land are overwhelmingly not even Catholic, and the things that enforce ruler ship in Ancient China like popular support hold no weight in feudal Europe.

You tap the bag. "When you play the game, do you blind yourself to what your opponent is doing? No, you've got to watch carefully, study his moves, know what his intentions are. Or he'll creep up on you, and take you before you even realise what's happening."

She frowns but nods.

"Women are trouble," he concluded, "They have you thinking two things at once."

Solomon nods. "Aye, they're a good little troop. Steady in the fray. I was impressed how well we held together in the ambush. We've no cowards in our number."

He looks over each of your soldiers, all mounted and watchful. "I'd judge the weak link to be Orlando, though not for lack of heart. His spear arm is simply the weakest, but I think you can count on him. Welf is a good fighter, but I think he favours foot combat to the horse, and he could use a spear to match the rest of us on a charge."

"I don't know this Theodore, or if we should rightly call him one of ours, but he keeps a good hand for his age."

"What about my squire, how would you say he's coming along?" you ask.

Solomon grinned. "Hugo chafes to be older than he is and a foot or more taller, but he's showing promise. Don't burden him too much with tasks though, or he might break. He is still a boy, and needs time spent around others his age."

"I think we've a good bedrock for a band, but we need more men," he concluded, "Ranged support in particular. Archers, or slingers even. A good company of foot would make us a small band worth our weight in gold if we go the mercenary path."

Something to consider.

You motion with your spear. "Men, form a wedge on me," you say, "Women, keep a safe distance. We ride!"

You spur your horse onward. Hugo is at your left and Solomon on your right. You come down the road to see the fighting.

A Templar flag holds firm in a line of men, both infantry and horse, as they were pressed in by Saracens on horseback. They're line was closing down into a near circle as they were pressed around their banner. You could see little of the details, though you saw not all the defenders were Templars. It was hard to get a clear count of numbers, but you saw that the Saracens had numbers on the Franks.

"Egyptians," Solomon said the word with such fury you were worried he'd fly ahead of your party.

You fly by the fighting, and you fly by the flank. A few startled Saracens turn to watch you pass, and some of their fighters break of from the fray to match you. You swoop about like falcon coming down on a dove, turning around the road and bearing down on the back of the Saracens. A rough line of spears had formed to meet you, but it broke on your charge. You felt your lance hit hard against some poor fool, before your world was filled by a towering, swarthy Egyptian on horseback with a long straight blade in hand all thick with gore.

Your men are caught in different combat, cutting down men left and right. The Egyptian slaps sword against shield and closes on you, single combat in the heart of a roaring melee.

The Saracen thrusts over your spear tip, his long arms not quite a match for your spear shaft. You try to bat him away but he manages to hook your spear shaft under his arm and cut at your helm. He doesn't hold for long though, and you draw away with a furious beat around his helm as he cuts at your forearm.

You raise your shield to catch his next blow but his thrusts overwhelm your defense and he is soon pressing the initiative. Your only counter attack is checked on his shield when he cuts toward your face.

You slam your spear through the Egyptians defense, goring his shoulder, but he manages to close your spear aside and strike in at your shoulder in turn. You break out with a thrust to his helm, ringing off the rim, and sweep the solid shaft into his collar as you draw back. He closes in on you, trying to wrestle you from the saddle, but you break away with a beat of your shield. You try to follow up on that with a strike of your spear but he beats it aside with the edge of his shield.

The Egyptian wipes blood from his split lip.

You bring your spear around and strike the Saracen from his horse. As he tries to climb from the dirt your spear tip finds his throat, and he is pinned where he lays.

"You are my prisoner, sir," you say.

The Egyptian casts aside his sword, and lays down with eyes closed, accepting his capture.

The dust clears as a few Saracens manage to flee, the wounded put to the sword.

Your men have managed to make it out wholly unmolested, though Orlando has a cut on his arm that he is nursing and Welf's shield is heavy with notches along the rim.

The leader of the Franks shoulders toward you, sword raised.

"My thanks," the heavy templar said, his white surcoat pink from blood and gore. His men, both secular and temple, stand relieved.

You waves over to the cavalry that was with him and they come trotting up. You spot a familiar face.

"We are in service to Count Hugh," the templar said, "keeping this road safe from bandits. Never thought to see men of Egypt so deep in the kingdom." He kicked your prisoner hard.

"Only a fool lowers his guard when lions prowl outside," Malik said, lowering his chain veil. He smiles to see you. "Well that we meet again Sir Wilhelm."

His daughter comes up beside him, nodding to you as she raised her spear.

"Sir Wilhelm?" the templar looked between you, "Well good to know our rescuer's name. I am Sir Joyce."

"Well met Sir Joyce," you say, dismounting. Your men and the other cavalry all dismounted as well. "I am Sir Wilhelm of Koblenz, and we are happy to be of assistance."

From there you turn to your old comrade. "Malik, I thought you had fled north," you say as you embrace in a quick back slapping hug.

"Say loudly you are going one way," he said, "And then quietly go the other. We had heard Lord Hugh had need of mercenaries, so we took a ship to Jaffa."

He looks to your prisoner. "And you have netted yourself a medium sized fish. This is Mehmed ibn Omar, cousin to the Sultan of Egypt. Worth a pound or two of gold. What are you doing out here, Mehmed?"

The Egyptian simply glowered at the Syrian mercenary.

You brought your womenfolk up to the field.

You shake your head. "You've an important job to do, and I'd see that you do it before looking to us. We've swords enough," you gesture to your men.

Sir Joyce shook his head. "I cannot let you go with nothing. Take ten of my footmen to Asrur at least." He frowns at 'Judith' strangely, then looked back to you. "I insist," he said, placing a hand on your shoulder.

"Further north brings us into the lands of Lord William," Malik said, "Who is twin to Lord Gerard. My daughter is wanted on a count of murder, most unjustly, in his lands. If you do not wish to take the footmen, my lancers will be happy to provide escort." Malik has a body of ten lancers, as well as himself and his daughter.

Neither seem willing to take no for an answer, honour bound as they are to assist you.

This is also irrelevant, as bandits don't attack shit they can't easily defeat, and peasants will assume the women are whores or wives.

"I thank you for your offer Sir Joyce, but Malik and I have ridden together before," you say.

"None taken sir," he said, "Shall we meet again in Jaffa?" he said to Malik.

"If God wills it," Malik replied. The two shared a small embrace before Malik was back in the saddle.

Sabeen rode up. She pulled her helm off, her hair grown thicker since last you saw her. She looked you up and down, an amused twinkle in her eye. "Nice helmet," she said, rapping it with her finger knuckle. "Might get one of my own some day."

Solomon binds your prisoner and throws him over the back of his horse, chuckling as he spoke to the man in a language alien to you.

The Lancers formed on you as the Templar and his men began a march up the other direction of the road, waving farewells as they departed.

"A good man, Sir Joyce," Malik said.

When Adelheid and 'Judith' were back in your number he bowed to them both.

"A pleasure," he said. Adelheid had a suspicious eye for Malik, but 'Judith' replied with a bow of her own and said something in what you thought was Arabic. Malik's eyes brightened, and he said something back to her in that tongue.

It is some days to Asrur.

Malik shrugged. "I do not mind, it has worked well for me. Count Hugh is a good master, better at least than Lord Gerard, and we have made a place for ourselves in his court." He smiled. "I am surprised to find you on the road. I had thought you would find your fortune in Sidon. Come, tell me why you are so far south."

As a quest gets popular, it attracts retards. Additionally, the retards from the early stages get more retarded as they have to face higher levels of play where they must consider more than the here and now effects of their own, physical actions. When faced with such complexities, they flail about like children, not fully thinking their actions through, for lack of experience or ability.

This seems to be a consequence of their sheltered, isolated lives, but more research is needed to confirm my hypothesis.

Continue.

"How is your daughter?" you ask.

"My daughter?" he considers you. "She is well. Why do you ask?"

You shrug. "She saved my life, a debt I've yet to repay."

Malik nodded. "Yes, I suppose you do owe her a debt. I see you still have that slave too. I tell you thus, she is well but could answer your questions better herself." He said that with a very gracious smile. "I like you very much, for a Frank, and see in you the makings of a fine leader of men. Though your talents would be better appreciated in more foreign courts."

"And how exactly is your lord's court treating you?" you ask.

"Hmm?" Malik stroked his beard, "Count Hugh is just, pays well and on time, and does not ask us to do unjust things for him. We seem most occupied with raiders out of Acalon, but after hearing of raiders on the roads, he put together a force to keep the peace from Jaffa to Sidon. A bold undertaking. King Fulk's forces are too busy on the borders of Galilee and Oultrejordan to do as much. Woe is it when a king cannot police his own realm."

"I have heard tales that he is embroiled in some conspiracy," you say.

To that Malik spits. "Count Hugh is no fool, but he's no web spinner either. I have heard the same such. Tales of illicit affairs and power plays. He merely wishes to exercise the will of King Baldwin, and restore natural rights to the local lords."

He shook his head. "Calling it 'conspiracy' goes too far."

Malik seems loyal to his new employer, ad much impressed by him.

The night passes and you set up camp. Malik's lancers keep watch, giving your men time to rest.

You sit back and look at your assembled party. In only a day or two you would arrive in the fortress city of Arsur, and finish the first leg of your trip to Jerusalem.

'Frank' was the generic term for a European, the same way 'Saracen' was the generic term for a middle-eastern Muslim. The term 'German' in local histories only starts appearing after the Holy Roman Empire started to commit forces to the Crusades in a large scale after Barbarossa.

Even Italians were called Franks for ages. Learn to love it.

It's not completely impossible, but I wouldn't bet on it. A lot of land and business are owned by the Church, Church affiliates, or the Italians.

he did mention our talents would serve will in foreign courts. As if he had an idea about which ones
>>
>>34879625
Now that brings up an Intresting idea, but we can hardly do that without setting our brothers in arms against us.

Her job was pleasing men. Her current master can certainly please women. He's also the only one sharing privileges with her.

So there'd be interest in Will getting more the right kind of glory, contacts and women.
>>
>>34879665
shared privileges doesn't mean love & loyalty anon, if we want her loyalty we have to bind her to us with something hardier be it her freedom or something else.
>>
>>34879715
>freedom
For a foreigner heathen, a woman with no family and a dark past. I bet freedom isn't worth much for her.
>>
>>34879770
We should however give her the offer next time we are with her.
>>
>>34879770
true but regardless we need something to bind her to us that is more that mere shared ''privileges'' any man can give her that we need something more what it could be however we have yet to know

>>34879785
Agreed it should be on the tables regardless of its current worth

Ahh Ghost Quest. I did love it..

Remember when we killed that dictator dude, overthrowing his government in order to help the rebels. We then promptly left the planet, letting the 8 or so rebel factions fight among themselves.

6 threads later, civil war between the communists and 'good guy' rebels. Much butthurt was had

>any man can give her that
None cared because of her status. She learned lots of things from nobles and merchants looking for discrete company.

She'd probably try the same on her would-be master. But that went tits up when we rolled too high.

Chiri seems to be rightfully grateful to Wilhelm. That doesn't mean we trust her with 100 percent of things but it doesn't mean we push her away with unjustified paranoia either.

Basically being sensible and giving people an appropriate level of trust and not going overboard in any one direction.
>>

yes a certain degree of caution but no need to go full paranoia yet, if some Important companions in our care start dropping dead well we should start worrying.
