Mortals. The ever-necessary cog in the wheel that is the Spirit World. Mortals feed the Spirit World with Belief which turns into Ectoplasm, the energy source for Spirits like you.

This is where you come in, a Spectre who is in charge of gathering belief in the paranormal. As a being of pure ectoplasm, you were never part of the Material World, and so you cannot manifest directly without using a tremendous amount of energy. Often times this would use more energy than it gained, which is bad for business.

This is why The Bureau of Paranormal Activity has assigned you Haunters, ghosts and entities who can more easily access the Material Plane. Its your job to use these Haunters to gather belief while keeping certain mortals in the dark about your existence. It wouldn't do well to bring a horde of Ghost Busters or Psychic Mediums to hunt you and put you all in jars.

Welcome, Spectre, to Ghost Master Quest.

Your kind don't have names. You were never even alive. You're an entity of pure ectoplasm just known as a Spectre, a Ghost Master, and in one instance, Thrillhor the Spectre Supreme because you decided to get creative with a Ouija Board.

Your most recent assignment is haunting a house to scare out the recently moved in family. The previous owner of the house committed suicide in the bathtub. The Bureau has tasked you with driving out the family using the fetters of Water and Blood, to build belief that the house is haunted by the previous occupant.

Your Haunters consist of three ghosts:

Skitter, the Ectospider. A Rank 3 Haunter who specialized in summoning ghostly spiders. He doesn't take much ectoplasm to manifest, as he is already fed in part by the mortal fear of spiders.

Hector, the poltergeist. A telekinetic ghost in death, a con man in life, the opinionated and stubborn man is your highest rank Haunter at Rank 5.

Gale, the wind elemental. Her ability to control the weather is dependent on how much ectoplasm you feed her. She can also manipulate clouds, she does great weatherwork. She is currently a Rank 4 Haunter, but has asked you to recommend her to the Haunting Council for a rank-up. You aren't sure she's ready for a Rank Up quite yet, but you've assured her that you will recommend her as soon as you think she is ready.

When we left off our previous Haunting, you'd utilized Skitter and Hector to use a combination of the baby and the plumbing to gather up plasm from the parents. The family consists of a mother, a father, the baby, a pair of prebubescent twin boys, and a teenage girl.

Hector is busy trying to get the pool to overflow, while Skitter and Gale are benched.

There's a river mermaid trapped in the pool who you are trying to free, and there's a crucified teddy bear in the walls that utters only “Release me.” when you attempt to communicate with it. The bear seems to have some sort of curse on the nails that bind it, preventing ghosts from removing it directly. If you're to free the trapped spirits, you'll need more plasm.

When we left off, you had decided to gather more plasm from the twin boys and the girl upstairs, settling into their new rooms.

Might as well start here; play them off of each other.

Do something minor to one of them (have Gale blow something off of a shelf onto their head or something) watch him blame the other. Repeat for the other one. Get them more and more frustrated with thinking the other one is messing with them, then do something to BOTH of them while they're watching. Watch them put two and two together and freak out.

Hector is a middle-aged man who died in the 50s. If you have him manifest into a teenager's room, you're likely to get scares, but seduction is likely not going to happen without some sort of mental fuckery.

You decide to take the hunter mentality, and pick off the lone human. A teenage girl, dressed in some fashion disaster somehow labeled as popular. You saw her kick her twin brothers out of the biggest upstairs bedroom, and starts to inspect the place.

Unbeknownst to her, there is a mangled teddy bear inside of the wall, hanging on curse nails impossible for you or your haunters to touch. However, in the advent of the teenager, your consciousness picks up one thing: the teddy bear's head turns to watch the girl move about as she meanders through her new room. The girl seems completely immersed into herself as her headphones blast music while she plays with her phone. Doing anything too subtle would likely escape her notice.

>Manifest Hector
>Manifest Skitter
>Manifest Gail
>>
>>34844926
Let's manifest Hector. Have him snag the headphones off the girls head. Then, when she reaches for them, have him yoink them away.

Do this in the direction of teddy.
>>
>>34844926
While we're here, ask Teddy if he can manifest any powers. He's probably short on plasm, but we've got a limited toolset right now and anything that increases our arsenal would be for the best.
>>
>>34844926
Along with whatever we decide to do inside,
>>Manifest Gail
Top floor rooms are really susceptible to wind; get to blowing and the whole place'll start to sway and creak; not just audibly, but physically. Shit's unsettling. Doesn't do much for making it seem supernatural, but the atmosphere's a good start.

I'm a little worried about focusing on the bear, since they'll begin to connect the haunting to him rather than the suicide, which kind of ruins our intended focus.
>>
>>34845194
Maybe we can make it look like the ghost of the suicide girl is trying to get her long lost teddy bear back? Maybe we can trick them into thinking that freeing the bear will stop everything, when, in fact, that'll just be the beginning.

“Hector.” you call, and the poltergeist manifests right beside you.
“Yes, boss?”

“Yank the headphones away from her. Towards our hanging friend.”
“You got it, boss.” the poltergeist nods as he moves to carry out the deed. “Gale.” you say. “Go outside, work us up some strong winds.”

“Of course, Spectre.” The air elemental answers in her wispy tone as she flies up above the house and starts to gather winds.

You check the ambient plasm. It seems that Hector and Gail's manifestation would take most of the remaining energy, but thanks to the plumbing stunts from before, the family does have a healthy fear running through them at the moment. They're trying to brush it off as new house jitters, but its something you an exploit.

You hear the perplexed yell of the teenage girl as Hector pulls her earphones out, then as she turns, yanks them toward the wall where the trapped spirit is. You feel a fresh influx of fear as she stands in mild terror, looking up at the blank wall as chills creep down her back. She spends a good moment just staring at the drywall.

You venture your consciousness to talk to the spirit again.

Have hector wait until she comes over to get her headphones, then have him pull them up along the wall. Maybe have them spin in midair or spell out "TEDDY with the cord, if he's feeling fancy. Knowing mortals, she'll probably do that thing where she slowly reaches out to touch them. That's when its time to drop them.

Once hector's done with that, have him write "TEDDY" over and over again on her phone, if he can. I know he's no gremlin or ghostwriter, but these things are all touch activated these days, right?

Let her spend a couple seconds staring, and then have Hector give the drywall one good, loud thump from the inside, just to drive the message home.

Drywall's not the toughest material, so it'd be great if it cracked slightly. Helps get rid of some of the aversion to cracking the rest of the way through the wall.

“Drive our point home, Hector.” you command. As the girl scrambles for her headphones, you see Hector drag them up and pin them to the wall where Teddy hangs inside.
You venture into the wall to speak to the spirit once more. “Is there anything you can tell me about yourself?” you ask. The bear silently moves its head to stare at you. “What are your abilities, Spirit?” It opens its mouth and whispers in its pained voice once more. “Dreams...”

Perhaps Teddy was a Dream specialized Haunter.

Outside the wall, the girl tentatively reaches for her floating headphones. As soon as she makes contact, Hector drops them. “All right, time to really drive it home...” the old poltergeist says before throwing his shoulder against the drywall. It bows outward and you are rewarded with a loud scream as the girl tears from the room as fast as she can. The wind outside howls as Gale contributes a wind powerful enough to rattle the shutters and the window panes. Uncharacteristic for a sunny day. You feel the rewards of fresh plasm surge around you. Excellent.

You turn to the drywall and notice a large crack running down where Hector threw himself against it.

"You cracked the wall."
"Oops..."

Ah, so he's a sandman. Makes sense. Maybe we can use him a little later to communicate with the mortals. Shame though, sandmen are specialist haunters, really good at what they do, but nine times out of ten you're better off bringing a utility 'geist like our man Hector or a generic scarfest like Skitter.

I say we wait for the parents to investigate. When they get near, we have skitter or hector make some noise from inside the wall. Hopefully they'll assume some kind of animal is stuck in there and they'll maybe break it open trying to get it out.
>>

Let's go see if those kids are afraid of spiders.
>>
>>34846050
The girl raises a commotion downstairs, you hear her crying to her parents all the way from your position upstairs. You ponder whether to move on to the boys, or wait for the parents to come investigate. However, while you ponder your next choice, it seems the two boys come into the room to see what the yelling was about.
“What was she yelling about?” one of the twins ask as they poke around the room.
“I dunno, she said something about a monster.”
“Dad says monsters aren't real.”
“Whoa.... lookit that...”

The twins move to the big crack in the drywall.
“She's gonna be in sooooo much trouble.”
“I'd say it was a monster to if I broke a wall.”
“Well, it wasn't there when we were in here, so it's gotta be her that broke it.”
“Yup.”

The twins keep contemplating the giant crack in the drywall as you hear their sister frantically try to explain the situation to her weary parents. Like before, Teddy seems to be watching the mortals in the room, his head turning from one twin to the other, still hidden inside of the wall.

You decide to postpone any more paranormal activity until the parents arrive into the room. You bind Skitter and have him pour spiders out of the crack.
“Spiders!” the first boy to notice yells as runs away from the wall. His brother turns to look at him, but when his gaze is drawn to the wall, you dismiss Skitter and the spiders vanish into the ethereal. The twin's confusion is only short-lived, as the parents and daughter arrive shortly after. Still, you feel fresh plasm leaking into the air, a refreshing feeling.

The father arrives first, with the mother shortly behind with the baby in tow. The father, upon seeing the massive crack in the drywall, starts sternly talking to the daughter, asking if she'd done anything. The twins giggle nearby, watching their sister get into trouble with impish glee, and the mother moves to inspect the crack.

The father moves over to the wall next to the mother to see the damaged drywall more closely.
“Looks like it's bowing outward.” the dad says. It seems he relents on blaming the daughter, considering there's no feasible way she managed to break the drywall where it would crack outward. “Looks like I'll have to patch it up. Maybe it's just old and rotted. Or the realtor had it patched with cheap stuff...”

The father muses about more work that would have to be put into the house, thanks to Hector's faucet scares earlier. Still, you had the entire family in one room...

“Skitter, crawl around in the wall, make them thing something's in there. Hector, I want you to open the window a bit.”
You look up.
“Gale, I need you to kick up a nice spooky wind.”

Your Haunters answer in the affirmative as they carry out their tasks. You feel the drain on the ectoplasm, a sizeable one, but for what you have planned, your investment will be paid off twofold. The clatter of Skitter's claws on the inside of the wall causes the family to turn and look at the offending drywall. “What the fuck...” the day says as he moves closer to the wall. “Maybe there really is something in there...”

On one hand, having the father open the door of his own volition to see what's in there is more narratively satisfying, but on the other hand, busting that wall open would be a huge juicy scare.

We should put a bunch of spiders in the wall before hector opens it. Like, fill it to the brim. To the point where they pour out. “Skitter, bulge the wall out a bit.” you order as the spider causes the wall to bow outward. You feel another influx of plasm as the father backs the family away from the wall.
“Okay, on my mark. Hector, bust the wall down. Skitter's got it pretty tense, so it shouldn't be that hard. Gale, thunderclap when he does. I want them to be pouring ectoplasm into the air after this. Ready? Three....two...”

Hector gives a small laugh as he rubs his hands together. “Let's get spooky.”
“One.”

It all happens within a moment. Gale's winds burst the window the rest of the way open, causing it to crash against the wall as the thunder cracks seemingly right outside the window. The sound is deafening, as Hector throws his telekinetic weight against the weakened wall. The drywall bursts open, plaster and dust clattering to the floor.

The family screams as they back away from the wall, you can hear Hector giving his best ghostly laugh along with the howling wind. “Hyeeeehahahahahahahahah!” Wind swirls around them, and they finally register the mangled teddy bear hanging crucified inside of the wall. The winds die down just in time for you to hear the dad mumble, “What in god's name...”

Teddy hands ominously in the wall, staring blankly out at the family. “Kids, get downstairs now. Downstairs, everybody, go.”

The mom leads the kid downstairs while the father moves out into the hallway. You could probably get them to leave the house if you piled on the scares a bit more, but you haven't driven the Water and Blood theme home. That was likely to hurt your ratings if you retirned to the Bureau now...

Good. Good. We're half way there. We have plasm to burn now, so we can begin to actively manipulate our environment and we've set up the bear as something for them to investigate.

We can get the haunting underway, but we're going to want it slow and steady until we've achieved our objectives.

Let's have Hector stop up all the drains in the house and turn on all the faucets - hot water.

Let's get gale to up the storm and make it rain. That'll help trap them in the house and increase the rate at which the pool is flooding (Hector did put the hose in the pool,, right?)

Let's look in the pantry real quick while we wait to see what the mortals are doing. We're looking for anything dark and red.

You take a deep breath. Well, breath is not what it is technically, your kind don't breathe. However, you do take in the fresh plasm now saturating the air. If the family didn't believe in monsters before, they certainly did now.

On the ground floor, the father is pacing around the living room while the kids and mother huddle on the couch. The girls are scared out of their mind, while the twins laugh and talk about how cool it was to live in a house with monsters in it.

“S-Should we call someone?” the mother asks tentatively.
“Call who? The fucking ghost busters?” the dad asks irritably.

You listen to them bicker, just tasting the plasm in the air. “Hector, go stop up the drains. Gale, lets get a bit of rain going.”

You move over into the kitchen. It seems they didn't have that many perishables. A good move during a move, but not exactly helpful to your current predicament. You needed to find something that looked like blood.

You move among the boxes the family hasn't fully unpacked yet, your consciousness not bound by the barriers of the mortal realm. You scan along the interiors until you hit the first thing that looks like blood.

Canned cranberry sauce.

>>34848897
This isn't a bad idea. It keeps the fright going and if they're looking for something to do to stop the haunting, giving them some direction could speed things up quite a bit. Mortals can be pretty slow.

You summon Hector to take the canned cranberry sauce for later use. You'd need a way to open the can, but maybe you can feed enough ectoplasm to get Skitter to bite it. At any rate, you move outside to check the pool

The pool is overflowing with water, thanks to Hector putting the hose in the water.

The river mermaid manifests as you approach. You haven't allotted enough ectoplasm for the nixe to sing her haunting song, so she has been quiet since last you spoke.

“Nix.” you greet her with the name you've come to give her.
“Yes, Spectre?” she answers.

“The pool water is overflowing now. Can you return to the water table in the ground?”

The nixe drifts about the water, then shakes her head. “The ways is open, but not wide enough.”

So, it seems you need more water flowing out of the pool if Nix is to escape. The river mermaid remains trapped.

>Have Gale start up a rain to try and increase the water out of the pool.

What would just continue spamming Save Me count as? Peaceful?

Also, get Gale to make a moaning wind throughout the night. Find a nice hole or slit somewhere in the house and blast a steady gust of wind through it to make that annoying sound.

You decide to not react to the father's outburst. The box impacts and scatters the assembled spiders, who write smaller versions of the “Save me” all over the wall.

“Gale, give us a bit of wind.” you command. A wispy moaning picks up through the house, mostly upstairs through the open window. It seems that the upstairs room was filling with water thanks to the open window and the rain from Gale. It seems the water point is being driven without bothering with the paranormal side.

>Drive the point even further home by having Hector flood the upstairs. This has a chance to either force them to go upstairs and deal with it, or drive them out.

“Hector, flood the upstairs.” you command. The poltergeist gets to work turning the faucets on full blast. The mortals don't even notice as they huddle in the living room.

You watch them scurry about as Skitter continues to write “Save Me” in his spiders on the wall. The wails of the children form a fearful cacophony as the father figure tries to maintain control. The mother is crying, clutching the baby tightly. It would take time for the upstairs floor to fully flood, but thanks to the open window and the rain, you've gotten a good head start.

“Fuck this, we're getting out of here.” the father cries. He moves to one of the boxes, pulls out raincoats and hands them out. The family starts toward the door...

You watch the father usher his family out of the house. Perhaps you stacked on the haunting too thick, but you did have a job to do. Water was one for two fetters you used, though you're not certain the family would be convinced of the suicide haunting. The Bureau might have something to say...
“Gale, whisper for them to come back.” you order.

Her voice picks up on the wind as the family leaves. You even see Gale form another face in the clouds. Not frightening like before, but soft and vaguely feminine.
“Please...”

You notice the father stop and look back at the house. The mother herds the children into the moving truck, the father continues to stare back at the house. You hear Gale whisper again on the wind. The father seems conflicted.

Gale piles on the pleading as the face seems to talk directly to the father. “Please save me...”
“I want to go home...”

The father seems to steel his nerves. He moves to secure the family in the moving van. “Stay here.” he says before he wanders back into the house.

Water from Hector's flooding cascades down the stairs as he meanders up the flooded staircase.
“HOW DO I SAVE YOU!?” he calls out to the house, yelling over the wind and rains.

“Hector, lead the mortal to our stuffed friend.” your oder.

“You got it, boss.” Hector says with a nod. You soon hear splashes. You look down and Hector manifests enough to disturb the water on the floor. He stomps along the floor, the ghostly footsteps leading the mortal through the flooded upstairs and to the hole in the wall.

“Hector, we need to open that can we found.” you say, thoughts racing through your head as the mortal follows the ghostly footsteps in the water.

“They had a can opener in the kitchen.”
“Do it, then dump it into the bathtub before the mortal sees.”
“Sure thing, boss.”

With the family out of the house and the father upstairs, no one notices the can opener lift itself out of the moving box labeled “Kitchen Stuff” and open the single can of cranberry sauce. The watery footsteps lead the father into a false room to allow Hector the time to fly the sauce up and dump it into the water.

While Hector works his magic, you get a brief reprieve.

With the water raging all around you, the thought of Nixie crosses your mind. The river mermaid should be able to return to the groundwater table, but you'd have to visit her to be sure.

You watch Hector work the false blood into the bathtub and lead the father back through the hallway. “I dont know what you want from me! How do I free you!?” he cries as he follows the watery footsteps. “Oh god...” he says as the red water from the bathtub joins into the rest of the flooded upper floor.

It was then that Hector resumed his trek toward the wall where Teddy still hung crucified inside of the wall.

You notice the mortal would have a hard time removing the nails with his hands. You scan the moving boxes until you find one labeled “Tools.” A quick inspection reveals what you were looking for: a hammer.

“Hector, use the hammer and hit the nails with it a few times.”
“Boss... are you sure that's okay? The last time I touched those nails hurt like hell.”
“You won't be touching them directly, just with the hammer. Drop if it turns painful.” you command.

Hector fetches the hammer while the mortal is busy wading through what he thinks is bloody water. Several pings of the hammer on the nail ring out through the wind and rain and water. “What in the hell-” the mortal stars before the house shakes. You feel a massive drain in the ectoplasm in the air before a pained scream rattles the house.

“GRAAAAAH!” the inhuman voice roars. A quick inspection of the house lets you see the stuffed animal writhing in apparent agony as the curse nails are disturbed. “Holy shit...” the mortal says. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?” he yells again.

It seems that hammering the nails caused your stuffed friend a great deal of pain.

“Hector, drop the hammer.” you say. You make a mental note to apologize to the spirit once he is free. The mortal wanders through the red water, the footsteps having stopped in front of the nailed teddy bear.

Teddy seems to turn his head toward the mortal. “Release... me...” the bear says. The mortal trembles a bit. “O-Okay...” he says, looking around. He spots the hammer and moves to grab it. He returns to the wall and looks at the teddy bear.
“If I pull those out, will you leave my family alone?” the mortal asks.

You decide to go check on Nixie as the mortal works on the nails pinning Teddy to the wall. A quick ethereal jaunt puts you right in the backyard. Thunder still roars overhead in the rain as the nails are removed, but you come to the site of the river mermaid driving all around the backyard, which is completely flooded. A good thing you notice is the nixe seems to be swimming in places other than the pool.

She manifests and floats over to you as you show up.

“Spectre, what wondrous news. My water flows freely again.” She says lightly as she drifts about the backyard, enjoying her new freedom. It seems Gale and Hectors efforts have paid off.

You watch the spirit float about before you decide to ask her to join your team. You didn't have a Water Fetter spirit, and Nixie would be a grand edition to your Haunters.

“Nixie, I am happy that you have your freedom again. Freeing trapped spirits is one of my duties as a Ghost Master. I have to ask, however. Would you be interested in joining our team?”

The river spirit pauses and drifts closer. “Joining you?”

You nod. “A water spirit like you would be a great addition to my team. I would be honored if you joined us.”

The nixe contemplates this for a moment before relenting. She gives a slow nod,
“You freed me from my confinement. I owe you much, Spectre. The honor would be mine if I was able to pay back your efforts by joining you.”

You decide to let the river mermaid enjoy her newfound freedom as you move back into the house.

The mortal removes the final nail with a final thunderclap and Teddy slumps to the floor.
“Is...Is it over?” you hear the mortal ask as you have Hector cut the waterworks. The rain and wind still blow outside, but the faucets and flowing water have stopped. Now the upstairs is just one undisturbed red puddle.

“They called me Dream Eater. I spent my time harnessing ectoplasm by manipulating the dreams of mortals. All up until I ate the dreams of that witch. “First off, I have to say, I apologize for the pain we caused you earlier. We were trying to lead the mortal to remove those curse nails.” you say.

The imp lazily waves you off, one hand still clutching his head. “I was barely even conscious, then. Probably thanks to the nails. If anything, I barely even remember it. They did a good job of suppressing me. If anything, I should thank you. Anything is better than being trapped in there.” he shakes his head, finally lowering his other hand.

“I also wanted to see if you would join us. A Dream Fetter haunter would be useful to our team.” you say as the imp starts to pace.

“What?” he answers, looking up at you. “Oh, sure thing. Like I said, literally anything is better than being trapped there.”

“Hector, finish off the mortal.” you command. Water and blood. You freed the trapped spirits, and the family is already geared to leave his place forevermore.

You barely feel any drain in the ectoplasm as Hector manifests, so abundant is the plasm band. He appears as a rotting skeleton under the flooded upper floor before rearing up.

“FEED ME.” he roars as he breaks the surface of the water, lunging forward with his arms wide to try and grab the human.

“HOLY FUCKING SHIT.” the mortal yells, falling backward into the water. The red liquid churns and froths as he scrambles away from Hector. The poltergeist doesn't really try to grab him, but makes a show of lunging forward again as the human scrambles to his feet. He stumbles down the stairs and out the door.

The sound of the moving van cranks up outside the house as the vehicle is thrown into gear and peels away. Boxes steadily fall off of the still-open back. You turn to the poltergeist, managing a bemused smile.

“Well done, Hector.” you say, and the cranberry sauce covered skeleton gives a thumbs up.

With the mortals scared off, you gather your Haunters around you.

“Well, team. Another successful haunting.” you turn to look at Hector, “And with no injuries this time.”

Hector, still as a red skeleton, only seems to grin. Though that might just be the skull he manifested. Luckily for you, there was no clean up required this time.

“Gale and Hector, take Skitter and show Nixie and Dream Eater back to the Haunted Mansion. Everyone introduce yourselves to each other, I'll be returning to the Mansion soon.”

Your Haunters old and new give their affirmatives and dissipate back into the aether.

You started this haunting with none of the required Fetters, and still you managed to do everything the Bureau required while freeing two bound spirits.

And that's why you're the Spectre Supreme.
