Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you went sailing on the high seas, discovered the aftermath of a naval battle, and had an uncomfortable conversation with an old dude.

You contact Darzi via the brooches, making your way out of the monk's quarters. {I believe I owe you a story. Where are you?} Her response comes after a moment. {So you haven't forgotten! I'm in Skull Kid's room with Mortia and Fulvia.} You're actually relieved to hear Fulvia isn't locked away in her room, but you're curious to see how much progress he's made with that project of his. Especially considering all the help he seems to be getting. You hope he's come up with some sort of solution to his insulator issue.

You make your way through the temple, the hallways are mostly abandoned at this hour with the majority of the monks eating. You knock three times on Skull Kids door when you come to it and his voice calls out. “Come in!” You slip inside, closing the door behind you. Immediately you're assaulted by a heady, chemical stench. Your head begins to ache shortly after you enter, but your armor kicks on and covers your mouth and nose in a mask, as well as protecting your eyes from the fumes. When you survey the room, you see that Skull Kid and Mortia have been busy.

Skull Kid is busy laying out thin strips of a thick, white material on the inside of his nearly completed gauntlet casing. It currently sits in two halves, and you note an intricate series of wires on the inside of each half. He's also created some sort of glove from the same white material, and lined it with metal scales. Mortia, meanwhile, has a massive pile of fresh, green leaves sitting next to her on one side. On the other, a massive pile of dead, crumpled leaves. In front of her are a series of buckets filled with that strange white substance, Fulvia keeping most of them boiling away with fire magic. Presumably the cause of the fumes.

“What on Earth are you doing?” Skull Kid is the one who speaks. “Refining natural latex from a certain type of fig tree we found growing in the garden.” You're about to ask what latex is, but he seems to pick up on your question. “Latex is a type of natural material, a rubber, that insulates against electricity. If my theory is correct, it ought to insulate against vys as well. The military applications are innumerable. Unfortunately, this particular latex extract is also a skin and eye irritant, so I'll need to coat it in something to prevent it from inflaming my arm.” You stare at him for a short while. Darzi has a wet rag pressed over her mouth and nose, presumably to protect from the fumes. The two of you share a look and shrug. “Well, we'll leave you to it then, Skull Kid. By the way, you might want to think about a new name.” He waves a hand dismissively, mumbling some vague promise before returning to his work. Before you and Darzi duck outside, Fulvia speaks up. “Mikhael, when you have time I would like to speak with you.”

You nod. “Just contact me via the brooches when you can. My days have been hectic but I ought to have plenty of time tomorrow.” Fulvia doesn't respond, instead returning to her task of boiling the buckets of latex. Darzi and yourself decide to take your leave of the room, ducking through the door. Darzi is the first to speak once you're outside. “Skull Kid's a real genius, to be honest I'm somewhat afraid to see what he'll end up with.” You have to agree. “It is slightly worrying but I have high hopes for his invention's more domestic uses. Now then, a story?” She nods enthusiastically, and you make your way down the hall to her room.

Darzi stretches out on her bed, luxuriating. You make yourself comfortable in her desk chair. Without further ado, you launch into your tale. You start by relating the sights you saw inside Crazy Hayes' workshop, as well as the man's various eccentricities. You then go on to explain the mask, as well as the various other artifacts', effects and appearances. At your description of the mask, Darzi wrinkles her nose. “Why would you want to wear something like that?” You shrug your shoulders. “I don't know, a giant generator stabbing me in the chest worked out well enough. I figured, what's the worst a mask can do?”

You go on to relate the events that immediately followed putting on the mask. Waking up drained of vys in a mysterious courtyard. Pulling on the cuirass with four arm holes and picking up the rusted out sword. Your journey through the manor, the statue, the puzzle to open up a path to the tomb below. You lavish detail on your fight with the strange vys-consuming creature. Its eventual defeat at your hands followed by the explosion that very nearly knocked you unconscious. You discuss briefly the tomb itself and the engravings on the wall. Then get into just how it was you escaped.

Finally you go into detail about your actual meeting with the Entity, and how it informed you that it was watching. You touch briefly on the godly whispering you heard while you were on the spice and the hallucinatory voice you heard right before your heart stopped. Then you skip all the to the meeting you had with the Entity and the Dragon deep beneath Fort Longia. It occurs to you, she's the only person who knows about your vision of the dragon, and how it seemed to bend your will to its own before those three skeletal figures stepped in and put a stop to it and the Entity both.
(3/?)
>>
You flash back, briefly, to your meeting with the three skeletal figures in the Vault of Anthus. You give her the gist, detailing your conversation and then the artifacts offered to you. You of course mention that, in the end, you chose the cloak you're wearing. At the conclusion of your story, Darzi is staring at you with a mixture of confusion, fear, and perhaps even a touch of admiration. “So do you simply stumble from one horrible situation to another, or do you actively make the worst decisions you possibly can?”

You frown. “Hey! I've done okay. Especially considering I was expected to die in the desert.” She holds up her hands in mock surrender. “I admit, you've done well for yourself. However, judging by the way you tell it you're only a few steps away from being too mad-” You cut in, correcting her. “Insane. There is a difference.” She waves a hand dismissively. “Right, whatever. Too insane to function.”

You don't really think that's accurate. “I'm not really that insane, all things considered. I could be far worse off than I am. All I really need to do is continue to advance my understanding of Metal magic and I ought to be able to ward myself against the worst of any insanity inducing events.” Darzi sighs, shaking her head slowly. “Do you have a plan in place, just in case you do ever completely lose it?” You nod. “Chrys has promised to put an end to me if I ever become dangerous to the party.”
(4/5)
>>
You're not sure why, but that seems to anger Darzi. “How could you ask her to do something like that?! You know how she feels about you!” You hold up your hands defensively. “Hey, I didn't ask her to do anything! She offered!” This seems to throw Darzi off, and she frowns contemplatively. “Fuck, that girl is weird...” An accurate statement, you suppose. Darzi shakes her head, apparently banishing those thoughts. “Look, more important question. How are you going to get rid of this Entity? I think that ought to be priority number one.”

>Just tell her about your conversation with the Varistha, you don't really have a 'plan'.

Yeah I think seeking a cure in the Pa'vala is the only tenable solution in the long term. Having Mik commit suicide and upload himself into a magic android is hardly an appealing option. But let's do other things first. We never found out what happened to our Guar you know.

Anon, I...
No, but seriously, we still have a Shah to kill (hopefully avoid somehow? or kill the fagot we accused, maybe he kills his pa or something), a dragon to hatch, and metal and fire to master. I considered going to the jungle because that's probably the only place where high level metal magic is prevalent, but I think it might have some insanity thing going on in the jungle, maybe as a test, or just a general thing.

>>
>>34832464

>>
>>34832464
Hopefully after we get better at magic and combat, the jungle is a creepy place man, we'll def need nature magic to not be ambushed every 5 minutes. Although there is SOME chance that metal shenanigens in the jungle could help us with insanity, Pav'ala is closer and is a safer (lol, yeah right) bet at this point.
>>
>>34832474
whatever, man, there's no time limit to that, and we can just magic waltz in, and magic waltz out once we're a water grandmaster and quadruple master with 143 effects and 20 metamagics
>>
>>34832474
We will need to commander a pirate ship or two to finish that job methinks.
>>
>>34832488
I hope we get some time to grind out some meditation with minimal distraction (ie time skip with benefits) soon. Get to novice in Nature and Metal and boost Fire up if possible. Learn whatever effects we have on our backlog, get some reading in etc. Then as a reward for ourself and our patient entourage we can go pirate hunting. Set SK to make something that we can use to even the field vs their cannons etc.
>>
>>34832520
I'm waiting for his tinkering to produce a means for his cybernetics to interact with vys. Then we can build him a suit magical power armor.
>>
Rolled 6 (1d20)

>>34832488
You know, for some strange reason, I get the feeling that a much older, "magical" warlord with the resources of a small country, a fleet of ships, and the experience of a few decades in war and conquest might gain power and influence quicker than a very rich young, Samja vatis. Also, at that point, the pistol will probably be useless and we could have all the money we ever wanted if we put our minds to it. In fact, with the new Rhynian weapony and Skull Kid as our tech guy, this mission is looking more and more like a bad investment with little return.
>>
>>34832532
Once he has an understanding of vys we should give him that gauntlet to work with. The Shah turned it down right? (The one that was all techno-magicy?)
>>
>>34832520
Some kind of armor the predators ship use in their extended universe.
The armor on their ship "shed" as it gets damaged, there's a lot of layer of that stuff before whatever's trying to punch a hole into it reach the fragile bits.
>>
>>34832536
Sure but keep in mind he's currently of making war on some forgotten elvish kingdom somewhere. He isn't even home right now.
>>
>>34832536
We can still work alongside the warlord instead of trying to tackle him head on. Upon getting the bauble we can perhaps barter with the old merchant and maybe convince him to tell us why he's looking for items like this.
>>
>>34832549
Oh yeah, that thing. It had to be useful to warrant having in maim the users hand right? Who better to use it than the man with extensive augmentations!
>>
>>34832567
Ya'know, if it were at all possible for Sadik to simply barter the gem into his greasy hands, he would have done so already. What can we, a Master water Vatis and his merry band of misfits offer that an immortal merchant with access to the vast majority of a planet's most powerful artifacts can't?
>>
You cock your head to the side. “Well, I recently had a conversation with the Varistha regarding some research he was performing on my behalf. Just to be clear, by recently I mean less than an hour ago. He came up with three possible solutions to this issue of mine.” You stand up, beginning to pace the room impulsively. “The first possible solution relates to rumors of an artifact deep within the Pa'vala in the ruins of a temple. It's an artifact said to cure the mind of corruption, regardless of what that corruption's source might be. However, as I'm sure you know the Pa'vala is a dangerous place rife with beast of all shapes and sizes. Any fool who's dared to try and reach the center has either come back stark raving mad, or never come back at all.”

You launch into the next possible solution immediately, leaving Darzi no time to respond. “Now, I could also kill myself and attempt to transfer my consciousness first into a presumably sentient intermediary and then against transfer myself into an enchanted simulacrum of my former body. Of course, this would require a truly encyclopedic knowledge of enchanting, something no living being possesses. It would also require the ability to transfer my consciousness, and the nearest approximation I can think to mind transfer off of the top of my head is that strange ability Fulvia has to drag others into her mind. However, I'm not an AI so I doubt that's an option.”

You stop abruptly, turning to face Darzi. “Our third and final option is my death. The Varistha thinks it prudent that, should I grow too insane to function or the Entity begins to grow too powerful, I be put down. While on a rational level I recognize this as a necessary precaution to prevent a cataclysmic event on the scale of creating a second Pa'vala, I rather enjoy life and would rather keep on living as long as life has meaning. Perhaps even a little longer after that.”
(1/2)
>>
We need to remember to give that meditative drugs to Skull Kid.
>>
You collapse back into Darzi's chair, sighing. “So those are our options. To be honest, I've yet to give them much thought. I've only just learned of them and as I've previously mentioned my days have been hectic. We also have this pirate situation to deal with. I know I told the Varistha that it was better to leave them be, but this little voice keeps needling at the back of my mind. Telling me I ought to do something.” Darzi frowns, sliding off the bed and placing a consoling hand on your shoulder. “I think, right now, you ought to just relax Mikhael. You're worrying yourself to death.” How can you relax? In addition to the pressing issues you face you need to assassinate a man in a village nearly a week a way, you're supposedly going to assassinate the Shah in a few days, you need to steal a gem from an increasingly powerful warlord, and there is an ancient lost recipe to recover from the jungles of Elaudia. You have more on your plate than any normal person could handle.

>Maybe Darzi is right, you ought to go to bed. Perhaps meditate.
>What did she mean earlier by Chrys' feelings for you? You've had your suspicions, but if she could confirm them for you...
>You've no time for relaxation. You've task to complete. You ought to look into preparing for a journey to Khmedi, Chryssa's village.
>The village can wait, you ought to prepare for a journey into the Pa'vala.

I'll be leaving for a while to cook, so I'm casting my vote in case we choose to meditate right now.
Use the technique the Varistha suggested, and meditate on fire without the egg. If we meditate with our dragon baby, I want it to be when we're 1 insight away from Master at the earliest, I'm not going to risk hatching a dragon we can't control, and I'd REALLY RATHER IT DOESN'T HATCH HERE.

Yeah in the name of our sanity and increased power we should slow things down for a few days, calm down and get to meditating on some of our backlog. The stuff in front of us isn't going anywhere and if we're to kill the Shah either secluding our self here will prevent it or it isn't preventable.

In any case, we should take the next day to chill and speak with our party members, have Prof intensifies his training, have a quick discussion on what Mortia can do and what she can bring to the party, get SK on the training to use vys, get Chryssa motivated to earn her Vatis rank and have Fulvia and us reach an understanding on private matters or something.

Since they're all cryptic and mysterious and riddling and shit, just something they want us to know. Preface everything with "will you tell me ___ without me needing to do a favour for you" or something, so we don't get into another "lol, now you u owe us" situation. Ask what they want us to do, but let them knwo we have a lot on our plate, so we definitely aren't going to get on it immediately. Hell, we're not sure if what they want us to do is even something we're willing to do.
Just to reiterate, we have to make sure info from the stooges doesn't cost us anything. Afterall, we've been serving as great entertainment for them, they owe us this much at least.

Why do we must kill an hydra just because another Vatis did it that way? If we "need" the heart to absorb the venom, we have some venom gland that are rather potent enough to do the job. Instead of eating it just boil it down and inject it into our veins or snort it if you want.
We could also do something like removing one of our lungs and clean it outside our ribcages or something. Or hell try to breath underwater or shit. Hell why not everyone propose to snort the spice vial full like that friend of the old man did and meditate for a week?

>>34832907
Snorting spice would end up giving the Entity control or us going full MAIM MURDER KILL mode. It'd be bad end. Injecting the venom may work if it's toxic enough.

You hold up a finger, a thought occurring to you. “What did you mean earlier, about Chryssa...? I mean, I've had my suspicions.” She folds her arms in front of her chest. “Oh, your suspicions? Really? What might those be?” You sigh. “Can we not do this? I mean, lets be honest here. I just spent the vast majority of the day sailing a ship all across the Anthosian Sea, discovered the scene of a massive naval battle, and learned that three out of the three possible solutions to removing the Entity in my head will either require or most likely result in my death. This isn't even getting into the fact that, over the last week, there have been seldom few moments where my life hasn't been in danger. Romance has been a very low priority.”

Darzi relents with a annoyed huff. “Fine, but don't tell her I told you this." You nod your ascent, and she continues. "She is infatuated with you. Frankly, I don't think it's healthy." She pauses, placing a hand on your chin and jerking your head around for a moment, studying you. "Granted you're not bad looking, but you've got the common sense the Gods granted waterfowl. You've admitted yourself you're likely to die or go insane in the next several months. That's not the sort of person I think she needs to be attaching herself too.” Sheesh, when did Darzi become so motherly? “That said, she's a friend and I intend to support her. So if you have any shared interest you need to get off your ass and admit it to her. She's certainly not going to do it for you.”

“An associate of mine huffed an entire vial of spice and meditated for a week straight. When she emerged, she was changed. Where once my associate was a kindhearted, gentle woman she was now vicious and bloodthirsty, concerned only with the next battle. The next conquest. She died a week later, facing off alone against a Rhynian golem easily larger than a noble's villa.

You glare at her suspiciously. “Has she told you that in order for her to 'pursue other romantic interest' as she put it, I'll need to kill her husband and leave the corpse in a very public place?” Darzi looks a little taken aback. “No, I knew she was married but I didn't know the husband needed to die for the marriage to be declared void. The way she explained it, her marriage wasn't even properly consummated. I assumed she could just have her husband declared incapable of performing his duties and thus unworthy of marriage...-" She gestures vaguely about the room. "-or something.” You shake your head. “Disregarding the fact that she killed a man to help me escape and would likely be killed in turn if she returned to her village; to impinge the honor of the military within her society is punishable by death. It's the only reason she agreed to the marriage in the first place.”

You feel a little bad talking about Chrys behind her back like this, but you suppose Darzi is her friend. It's probably not too great a breach of trust. Darzi sighs deeply after a moment's thought. “Well can't you just... I don't know, convince her to commit adultery? It's not really that serious an offense.” You raise an eyebrow. “If I put some effort in I might be able to, but I don't think that's the outcome Chrys desires. She'd probably feel terrible about herself if she betrayed her moral principles.” Darzi waves a hand dismissively. “Fine, well. Do what you wish then.” She seems to have soured on the whole issue. “I can't really say I condone murdering her husband over this, even if he is an awful person.”

(2/3)
>>
You stand, clapping your hands together. “Well! This has been an insightful conversation but I need to go and commune with the three skeletal figures to whom I owe a debt.” Darzi looks at you oddly for a long while. “When did my life become so strange?” She wonders aloud, more to herself than anyone else. You respond anyway. “I'm sure you meant to say, 'When did my life become so amazing? Thank you Mikhael!' to which I say, you're welcome.” You stride out of the room with that final line, since you really have no idea how to follow that up. Once safely away from Darzi you retreat to your room and lock the door, sitting down on your lump mattress and folding your legs beneath you in a standard meditative pose.

You slip easily into a trance, reaching out towards the formless void. At first, you're not really sure how to go about such a task, but as you focus on your memories of that strange plane the trappings of reality begin to peel away, layer by layer. Eventually you float in the endless black, alone...

>>34833308
It's a balancing act after all, if there was nothing to do here people would get bored as hell after all the time and effort it took to get here. I'm still hoping for a housekeeping timeskip in the near future but I'm glad we have a lot of interesting things to keep us occupied as well.
>>
>>34833356
I honestly don't like housekeeping timeskips much, I feel like thy just rob us of conversations, rolls, coming up with ideas, etc.
I always thought it's better to just play along regularly, than use the easy way out.
I agree that it's a balancing act, but now we're absolutely swarmed with side quests and time sensitive events, so you know, maybe balance a bit more in favor of relaxation? That's just my personal opinion of course, and it's not like the playerbase hasn't gone actively seeking trouble again.

Story Post:
You search for the familiar caved-in faces of the trio of skeletal mischief makers you're indebted to. As soon as you feel your consciousness start to balloon outwards, you find them hovering above you. One of their faces is just barely an inch from your own, its breath reeking of death and decay. You'd like to say you didn't flinch, but that would be a lie. Fortunately it retreats, standing up straight and tall until it seems to tower high above you.

{He seeks us.}
{About time.}
{It's always so annoying when they play coy.}
{Oh yes, yes. Much more fun to be desired.}

You clear your throat, opening your mouth to speak. Instead of words the only sound to escape your throat is a dry rasping sound, but the skeletal figures seem to understand regardless. You start off by asking that they refuse to answer any questions for which you'd owe them a debt. That done, you simply start listing off your inquiries. The entire time the three figures talk among themselves.

{This one is so nosy.}
{Ah, but remember the last one we spoke with?}
{Hours and hours. Questions and questions.}
{I wanted to bash my skull in.}

This elicits a round of what you think is laughter. It sounds more like metal grinding against metal, or perhaps screaming children. It's hard to tell, to be honest. You finish off your list of questions with a short, sharp hiss of air, and the skeletal figures once more begin to speak.

{You owe us a debt.}
{Don't worry, don't fret!}
{We haven't decided yet.}
{Rhyming is cliché.}

{The next two questions we can't address.}
{Nonetheless you must assess.}
{Whether or not to obsess.}
{Stop it.}

{Regarding the Shah's impending death.}
{His father's already drawn last breath}
{You're not even good at this.}
{Do not dismiss no be remiss, something is amiss.}

{A monster's guest is best not addressed}
{Lest at best you face contest.}

{The old adage goes}
{Some languages predispose}
{Even with additional limbs and extensive practice you probably won't master void sign.}

{Artifacts and enchantment, we cannot answer.}
{Nor is the nature of the cloak a permitted topic.}
{The Millennial Man is tricksy indeed.}
{Artifacts are the tools of his breed.}

{The egg has already begun to hatch.}
{Dragons are not fast creatures.}
{Patience, young one.}

You're not even sure if you got anything of particular value out of his exchange. Frankly, you feel more frustrated coming out of this experience than you did going in, but that might be on account of the skeletal trio's generally patronizing demeanor. You attempt to open your mouth, but find yourself incapable.

{That will be all, we're afraid.}
{Do you think yourself our only client?}
{You're one of few, but there are others.}
{May your journey through life be amusing. To us, that is.}
