It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. However, even as mankind grasps the heavens our asses are still firmly planted in the mud.

After a tumultuous 21st century on Earth government has ceded its role to private enterprise. Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are an orbital courier. Your package is pain.

You stumble sideways and into Chisaki before sliding down the wall, groaning in pain. You look across the hall, somewhat dazed as you see the second Noncon fall backwards, a meaty crimson crater where his sternum once was.

You look around vision a little blurry. Your voice croaks as you speak.

“Headcount.”

Chisaki responds first. “Alive, probably bruised though.”

Miyuki and Marek give similar affirmations, which sets your mind at somewhat more ease. You really would like to avoid going back into debt due to a malpractice insurance hike. Those deductibles are sky high too. Standing up straight, you pull out one of your extra flashbangs and examine it. After a few seconds you sigh and shake your head. “What is it sensei?”

“These are a different make than the flashbangs we get at the Armory. Secfors must have a different supplier. I’m positive the fuse is longer.”

“Ahhh,” responds Marek acidically. “I was wondering how a professional mercenary wasn’t able to count to five. Counting, it’s pretty fundamental to functioning in normal goddamn society right? Like you passed kindergarten right? You’re not some sort of hyperdeveloped preschooler that they gave a gun to cause that shit would be funny?”

>Reprimand Marek

>>
You decide to deal with Marek’s shitty little ‘tude later. Right now you’ve got pencil pushers to save from Noncons. You open up a squad wide channel. “Alright everyone, after that little fiasco there’s no point trying for stealth any more. They know some flavor of hostile is here and that means that the hostages are living on borrowed time. Although I would’ve liked to go about this as quietly as possible, we need to resolve this situation ASAP.”

“No shit,” mutters Marek underneath his breath.

“So we’re going in with overwhelming force. Don’t be shy about the flashbangs. NeoLogos can always grow them new eyeballs. Eliminate any sort of resistance we encounter prior to contact with the hostages with extreme prejudice. That means grenades, and Miyuki, we’ll need you to hose them down. Don’t worry about ammo conservation, an LMG is the last thing we need firing off near the hostages.”

The rest of the squad, Marek included, nod silently as you lay out your plan. You were right to avoid a petty confrontation with the rookie, a show of authority did a lot more to bring him into line than any shouting match would have. You imagine that much of his outburst was predicated on the fear that there wasn’t a plan to save the civvies.

“Miyuki, Marek. I want you two to take the main entrance to the room where they’re holding the hostages. Throw the flashbangs into there. Once they go off, Chisaki and I will kool-aid man through a wall for maximum impact. That should draw their attention from the door and allow you two to enter the room as well. Speed not haste. The shitstorm you’d unleashing from killing a civvie would probably be big enough to fertilize all of Atlas, so AIM.”

The rookies nod one final time. “Alright then. Form up, I’ll take point.”

You are about to leave the room when you notice that one of the noncons still has a working headset.

You decide that the two seconds it would take to slap on a headset is worth the potential intel you could garner from it. You pry it off of the dead man’s head and are immediately surprised by how primitive the system is. Some sort of radio based system, no integrated computer, no software, just some insanely antiquated analogue system. No advanced features, no ID system, nothing. But pretty much impossible to subvert. There’s no way any modern military force would carry tech old enough to interfere with this, they’d have to drag out some archeotechnician.

You are relieved to find that the headset is still… tuned… is that the right word for it? to the proper frequency. You listen carefully to the staticy voices.

“-tcher Mickey, I repeat Butcher Mickey, do you copy?”

“They got fragged by the shills, they must’ve sent a team in while Antonin was negotiating.”

“Can’t trust no fucking shills man.”

A commanding voice comes onto the line. You can hear it straining from stress even through the static. “Focus people. Everyone, fall back to the defensive perimeter. Zulu Daffy, I need you and Tango Minnie to team up and then head towards Butcher Mickey’s patrol area. Try to engage the hostiles while everyone else gets ordered.”

The commanding voice shuts off to a chorus of “Yeah Antonin”s.

“Shit,” you grumble. You’d love to make a beeline for the hostages, but there’s no point bothering if it just results in your collective asses getting flanked. “Okay team, change of plans. Antonin is sending a welcome party our way. If the two groups he’s assigned are anything like this one, we’re looking at a total of four hostiles inbound. Take cover in this room and engage them once they enter. Once they’ve been pacified we move on.”

The squad takes up various positions behind furniture, walls and tables. Meanwhile, you keep and ear on the headset. After a few minutes, a button lights up. You seem to be receiving a short range band, probably for squad intercommunication. Gingerly, you move over to this channel.

“Why can’t we just start offing the hostages? Show those shills we’re serious, make them call off the attack squad.”

“Moron, it isn’t about the hostages. It’s about keeping what Antonin- we- know under wraps. The hostages are just a pretext to send in a kill squad. Keep the truth locked away.”

They must be close for you to start picking up their squad channel or whatever this is. You gesture to the rookies and heft your assault rifle. The hostiles seem to be approaching via the doorway your squad were about to exit the room through. Your fingers flex slightly as you squeeze the grip of the AR, butt pressed hard into your shoulder. Even if these guys are a bunch of amatuer radicals, bullets are still bullets. The part of your brain most similar middle aged Jewish Mother chides you for not bringing your equipment.

You think you can hear footsteps. They’re almost here.

You decide to wait until they’ve opened the door before striking. And in this situation, striking means throwing some dud grenades for shits and giggles. The duds arc gracefully through the air before landing behind the incoming group of noncons. They react with blind animal instinct, charging forward into the room, away from the dud grenades. This is a fundamental mistake.

The four of you burst out of cover and open fire. You rest your foot on the edge of the table, the AR quakes in your hand as it spews bullets out. The entire experience is weirdly silent, the report of the guns totally nullified by the silencers, the only sound is the hissing of bullets and a wet smacking as they impact with flesh. To be fair, that smacking might also be the sound of Thund- Miyuki’s frontal buoyancy bags bouncing against one another as her LMG rumbles in her hands. The spray of rounds rend the noncons to pieces, viscera and blood explode outwards from their body cavities, splattering across the floor. Shell casings clatter to the floor, punctuating the soft thuds as dead bodies collapse onto the floor.

The four of you look around. You can’t help but notice that most of your rounds ended up in the far wall. You decide to not point this out. “Alright squad. We’ve finally gotten lucky this time. Dropped the hostiles before they could return fire. That means Antonin doesn’t know that we put down his little expeditionary force.”

You gesture forward with your gun. “Advance to the central conference room.”

The rest of the squad falls in behind you as you move forward, towards the hostages.

Just before you turn the corner to the penultimate corridor leading up to the central conference room you hear some voices down the hall.

More noncons.

You click your tongue in mild irritation. You had rather hoped to impress Thund- Miyuki with your amazing CQC skillz, but so far you’ve been performing surprisingly.. averagely. Certainly nothing that would increase the gravitational pull on local panties. Resigning yourself to a somewhat average performance, you decide to take the safer, and decidedly less dramatic approach, of bang and blast. You were rather hoping to get some bang and blast in on Miyuki, but that possibility seems to be ever more distant.

Gritting your teeth resignedly, you lob the flash bang against the wall, sending it bouncing down the corridor. A half second later, and the flashbang detonates. You and the rest of the squad roll out into the main corridor where the disoriented noncons make for easy pickings. After dropping them with some adequately well aimed bursts, certainly nothing that would make the local XXs drool at your martial prowess. Sighing irritatedly, you dispatch the last surviving noncon in the hallway with a quick blow from your tomahawk. the brains and blood splatter artistically against the hallway wall, creating a stain that will most definitely be a bitch and a half to get out.

With the last vestiges of resistance in this area cleaned out with your usual gormless efficiency, you wave the rest of the squadron on, directing them to take up positions for the burst and entry into the central conference room, where Antonin is presumably holding the hostages.

You press yourself against a wall next to Chisaki, waiting for Marek and Miyuki to toss the remaining flashbangs and your grand entrance.

A voice over your headset.

“That’s quite sneaky of you, Mr. Merc, hiding behind that wall like you have.”

Antonin!

“Shit. Well… Shit.”

Antonin sounds triumphant over the headset. “Is that a surrender I hear?”

You grit your teeth and wave your team back. “Yeah. Yeah it is. I’m coming in alone.”

Antonin sounds pleased. “Very well. So long as your team knows that one wrong goddamn move and I’ll be spread brains all across this conference room. You shills already tried to fool me once, don’t think I’ll be so lenient the second time.”

You grunt in affirmation and wave Chisaki down. “Sensei-” she says, but you cut her off.

“No. This is too high risk for one merc and a bunch of rookies who haven’t even gotten their boots muddy yet. I’m going in alone to try to talk to this guy. You all wait outside.”

“But-”

“No buts,” you voice barks out rougher than usual. The stress is obviously getting to you. “This is an order. You will comply. Do you copy?”

Chisaki looks down, conflicted but defeated. “Yes…”

“Good.”

You stand up and walk towards the door where Miyuki and Marek are stationed. You wave their weapons down and quickly convey what the plan- or lack thereof- is. Surprisingly Marek does not protest, merely lowering his eyes to the floor along with Miyuki as you make it abundantly clear that they are not to intervene without your explicit permission. Miyuki attempts to protest as well. You stay her with a hand. “Don’t worry. I defeated Dreads. These guys are nothing compared to that Rasta Monster.”

Is FG dead?
>>
Miyuki bites her lip, but eventually nods. You smile wanly at her before you turn around, and open the door.

A half dozen barrels are pointed at various points on you, behind each one an increasingly jittery looking noncon. You gaze around the room. A bunch of people in suits are scattered across the floor, bound and gagged. They’re moving, their eyes on you. Not dead. Although the few guns not aimed at you could quite easily change that. Your eyes rest on the face of a bearded man, the only person standing in the room not carrying some sort of armament. The bearded man pulls out a huge caliber revolver, aiming it right between your eyes.

“Guns down.”

Antonin then. You comply, slowly lowering your assault rifle to the ground, never breaking eye contact with the former security guard turned noncon. “All the guns.”

Your shotgun, pistol, and tomahawk follow your assault rifle to the ground. You unceremoniously drop the Secfor issued grenades, making sure to keep a hold on at least two of the dummy frags from Camp Fordsshirebradswoodburg.

You gaze at the man across the room from you. His eyes are almost black, and the whites are bloodshot, lending him an almost possessed appearance. Antonin raises a trembling hand, and twists a bit of beard nervously. A beat. It almost feels as if there is one heart in the center of the room, pulsing for everyone.

You speak first.

Antonin smiles, it is not a happy smile and soon it slips off of his face, lips twitching a bit. “Because… because I saw how this was going to end. A whole… lotta… dead people… Me for sure, maybe you, definitely the hostages. I didn’t like that ending. Would you?”

You pause for a moment before you shake your head. “No.”

“Exactly. But that doesn’t really answer your question… does it?” Antonin draws out his soft consonants, giving him a somewhat ponderous air, like each word is weighed carefully before spoken. “I need… people. People who are respected. People who aren’t crazy, rejects, outcasts. People who Other people will believe.”

“So…” you say, slightly annoyed. Dealing with nutcases was not part of your training. “So. You decided to accomplish that by taking a bunch of innocent civvies hostage? Couldn’t you have just like made a cardboard sign and taken up residence on a street corner like the rest of the nutters?”

Antonin frowns. “No. No I cannot do that. My message is too important. They MUST comply. It is imperative that people know!”

“You’re always talking about what the people need to know,” you shout back, patience starting to fray visibly. This sort of circuitous bullshit is starting to remind you of a certain fruit shaped friend of yours. “What is it? What do we need to know!”

“I… I don’t know.”

“What the fuck does that mean.”

“I knew once,” cried Antonin, clutching at his forehead while his other hand keeps his revolver vaguely trained on you. The tremors are visible. “I knew! I knew why people needed to know! I was here and I knew it!”
>>
You grit your teeth and swallow a certain amount of anger. No good agitating this man further. He's already clearly deranged. The commanding presence of earlier cracking, the facade is breaking. But it was the facade that refused to keep the hostages. You let off a bit of pressure, and speak calmingly. “Yes, the dossier on you said you worked here once. As a security officer?”

Antonin looks up at you, eyes wild. A few beats, and they calm. He straightens up, gun still trained on you, and coughs. “Yes. Yes I worked here. But not truly for NeoLogos. I knew more than a guard. The windows… We could not see through them. We wanted to know what was inside. What was going on in Ismene.”

“Who wanted to know what was going on in the Tower,” you prompt, trying to steer Antonin away from immediately distressing subjects. “Who did you really work for?”

Antonin’s face screws up slightly. He mouths the words, but his vocal chords seem unwilling to comply. The surrounding noncons look on, impassive. “cY-drite!”

cY-drite. NeoLogos’ primary competitor on the neuroware market and longstanding rival. Wherever NeoLogos went, cY-drite was not too far behind, usually cheaper if not later. Well, you suppose a corporate espionage wing is probably cheaper than doing all your R&D in house.

“You were a cY-drite infiltrator then.”

“Yes,” hisses Antonin. “Yes, that was who I was. I forget sometimes… But not always! Not always…”

You glance around the room now. The noncons seem to be fixated on their leader and his extended break down. Their attention and in some cases even guns, away from their targets.

Hey, here's a thought for how we can take out the noncons with the dud grenades. Bluff. They think that we're just here to kill Antonin for what he knows right? So convince them that we're willing to blow up everyone with our duds. Just a guess but if Antonin is somewhat stable, I'd bet he'd surrender.
>>
>>34826972
>if Antonin is somewhat stable
He doesn't seem stable at all dude
>>
>>34826972
We're getting him to talk right now. That's a deescalation.

We don't want to escalate this situation right now.
>>
>>34827001
Let me be a little bit more clear about this. Antonin seems to jump between stable and unstable. If we can catch him while he's stable, or just push him a bit more while he's really unstable, maybe he'll just break and give up? He seems to have some unwillingness to kill the hostages
>>
>>34826972
>>34827001
Yeah, he's going to blow-up and shoot a hostage at this rate, but I'm willing to risk that to learn more.

The dud is also a good way to gauge/jumpstart his survival instincts and see how far he's gone.
>>
Does anyone else think this is at all related to the Pear Aliens?
>>
>>34827272
Yes.
>>
You need to push him more. Keep him off balance, keep the spectacle up, keep them focused on their leader. You swallow. It is dry. “So what is it? What did you find while spying in Ismene? Surely you must have found something?”

Antonin shudders and begins to pace around the room. “Yes. Yes yesyesyesyes! Yes I did! I found something of undeniable import! These were not assets they could deny! Important, it was very important!”

“What was it,” you say, taking care to keep the anger and the fear out of your voice. “What was this undeniable asset?”

Antonin freezes in place, stopping mid stride. “I… I… I…” Suddenly his hands jerk back up again, clutching at his forehead. The grip of the revolver pushed hard against his temple. “I know! I knew I know! I know I knew!”

You are about to speak again, your voice hard and furious. “What di-”

Antonin cuts you off. His eyes are calm. Despite the veins standing out in them, the dark bags underneath, they are placid. The torrent of emotions that contorted his face moments before are gone. This is almost more disturbing than the madman who once stood before you. Antonin speaks, his voice tranquil. “Mercenary. Do you know that feeling when you know something, but you simply cannot remember? When you stand up and go to the fridge, but can’t remember what you were looking for once you reach the door?”
>>
You nod slightly. “Yeah.”

“It’s like that. I know I found something in here. I just can’t remember what it was. No matter how hard I try to think, no matter how often I retrace, I just can’t.”

You chew your tongue a little. It almost sounds like one of those oh-too convenient cases of amnesia in the old movies, where the sufferer forgets only the most plot relevant details. Like someone just reached into his skull and scooped out everything they didn’t want him to know. Dropped off his memories in the trash and pressed delete.

Antonin is still talking. “What I’ve forgotten. I know what I forgot is why I forgot,” his speech is starting to break down again. “Does that make sense? I can’t think too hard on it, otherwise I get sucked into that void. A whirlpool of conscious…”

“So is that all you wanted,” you asking, cutting through Antonin’s reverie. “To get me to listen to you babble for a few minutes?”

Antonin jerks up and looks at you, eyes refocused. “Yes. Yes, you’ve heard me babble. And now what mercenary? You’ve got no weapons, my gun is trained on your heart,” and unfortunately he’s right, the revolver is pointed, solid as a rock, at your sternum, “So what will you do now?”

"You know, I've been having the same dream over and over again. Not every night, but frequently. I see this, thing. I AM this thing. And there's this other thing. This being. And he, it, is trying to explain to me something of importance. Some truth that I must know..." et cetera.

And if he's not calming down and we get close enough for CQC then break his wrist and snap his neck.

Your plan totally encapsulates what's wrong with how you came up with it.

Here's a little bit of theory I have about this quest and the overarching plot. Maybe some of you are thinking the same thing, maybe not. Either way, here it is.

The pear aliens were a race that advanced so much so, that they were able to upload their consciousness into computers and live forever. This has already been shown to us a couple threads back (I think a couple?). They achieved the singularity, and their civilization crumbled because of it. What reason is there to live if you have nothing to accomplish other than simply continuing to live?

The amalgam pear being who has been speaking to us in our dream wants to keep humanity from doing the same thing. (Maybe he wants humanity's assistance in destroying his own race and ending their existence in this quasi-purgatory they've put themselves in? Again, maybe not. Pure conjecture.

Fall Guy has posted times before about (and we've had actual plot points relating to) humans being on the verge of immortality. Either through genetic modification or likewise, achieving the singularity. The pear alien realizes this and sees that he(it) has to stop us, bringing me back to my previous paragraph.

But I believe that it's already happened. The Millenium Man doesn't just send droids to make meetings for him because he likes to. He does it because he has no physical body left. He has achieved immortality. And we are going to have to chose whether or not we want to kill him.

There it is. That's my theory.

>>
>>34828237

Okay then.

We go on Idol Bashers 2 alongside Darius, Valk and Elda and using the downtime to forward Elda's romance plot and gain points in the relationship meter. We operate from the BART, which has been tricked out to be some form of steampunky machine of axing and blunderbussy goodness. Our main goal is to obtain only the finest Boston Creams for our impeccable donut collection.

While this is happening, when we have a bit of time free, we nail all three members of the Himawari Force (who have come back as evil or something for the story, I don't know) while making sure Elda doesn't find out because it would hurt our waifu chances.

Deep enough for you?

“You know,” you say, clasping your hands behind your back and trying to look somewhat less threatening, “This is exactly what they’d want you to do.”

Antonin’s eyes narrow suspiciously. You assume they’re at your words, not the microscopic step forwards you’ve just taken. “What do you mean?”

“NeoLogos. They clearly didn’t want the world… no Human Space itself. They didn’t want anyone to find out what they’re doing here. Think about it. Does taking these hostages, making a scene like this, does it really help people believe your words?”

Antonin’s jaw muscles clench, and he looks away towards the ground. “No. No I suppose not.”

“Exactly!”

Another step

“To everyone else, you’re just another disturbed nocon. Who’s going to believe you.”

Another step.

“Really, did taking hostages really accomplish your goals? Are people going to believe the asshole who took a whole bunch of office workers hostage?”

Another step.

“Really? What can you hope to accomplish? Do you think taking these people captive will help spread the word of… I don’t even know what. Do you even know?”

Another step.

“I’ve been having weird dreams. Of alien architectures and inhuman life forms. Sometimes I AM one of them. Sometimes I’m seperate. It’s not every night…”

Antonin appears to be transfixed by your words. You continue to move towards him. Almost there….

“There’s this other thing. I can’t really describe it, but it’s huge and hot and humid. It says… It speaks with the voices of millions. They press down on me like a living furnace.”

“And sometimes… most times when I have the dream another being appears. It wants to help me, but it can’t manage to communicate. It tries so hard, but it just can’t manage…”

Antonin swallows. It is his turn to be frightened. “You’re insane.”

“And you’re an idiot,” you reply with a cold smile as your arms lash out and grab the noncon, forcing him into a choke hold.

2) you're patsies! surrender and they'll be lenient.

3) I got a grenade! pin is pulled. be cool and you'll get out alive and well.
>>
You make sure to keep Antonin muffled. Don’t want him telling the noncons to forget about him, and shoot anyway. Stupid martyr bullshit. “Now everyone let me be very clear. My muscles are not strictly speaking, human. They are the result of extensive and patented genetic engineering. They were actually grown in a lab before being attached to my skeleton over several days of intensive surgery. I can lift up and throw a goddamn sedan. If you happen to think that I am incapable of snapping Antonin’s neck like a fucking toothpick, then you’ve got another thing coming.”

The room is silent. Well more silent than it was a minute ago, when the two of you were arguing. Eventually, one of the noncons speaks up. “What do you want from us?”

You splutter a little. “Wha-what do I want from you? I want you to slather honey inside a tutu and fuck a guy in a wolf fursuit. I WANT YOU TO RELEASE THE HOSTAGES.”

There is a long moment of silence. It is punctuated as one of the noncons, a middle aged woman with frizzy hair, drops her SMG to the ground. It bounces hollowly against the floor carpeting. Gunmetal grey on corporate grey.

“Good,” you say, speaking with a sort of haughty assurance. “Drop your weapons. I’m no legal expert, but I can’t help but think a peaceful resolution to all of this will commute your sentences somewhat.”

More guns fall the the ground. Without Antonin to provide leadership, the noncons seem lost, unwilling or unable to think and act for themselves. They’re probably all a little bit out of their depths. As the last gun falls to the ground, you call in to your squad.

“Hostage situation is resolved. I repeat, hostage situation is resolved. I need some goddamn help processing all these noncons.”
