High drain is bad because it eventually ends up eating into your Toughness and (behind the screen) Vitality. The less you are Drained, the more you can cast. Strong spells produce High drain while weak ones produce fairly little.

This means that you can sit around in the scenery popping off small ones all day while a big one might take you out of a fight once it's done.

Since a quest is not a D&D adventure I found it more desirable than having a limited amount of spells per day or using a power point system since that would make the spellcasting aspect pretty unfun over the course of several engagements.

Generally you'll want to use something made of wood, metal, crystal, stone or bone.

Force spells prefer crystal and bone, Sight ones crystal and metal, and Body ones crystal and wood.

In general the preferred metals are silver and gold, though in cases they aren't directly usedt to cast they actually interfere which is why preparations meant to counter curses and solutions used to purge sickness tend to contain silver since it interferes with the Etheric aspect of sickness.
