"We'll let you two talk things out. That's important, you know - talking things out. It helps." Vintage chimes cheerfully as you continue to stare at the Callidus you've caught in the act of shadowing you.

You turn here to see the Equerry of the First bend down to snatch up your white furry boss off of the ground, clutching him to her chest like a child would to a favorite pet."Come on, Kyuubey. We've got to do things for a minute or two."

"Yes, but we need to show Matsuda--" Kyuubey begins, squirming in Vintage's grasp.

"We've got to DO THINGS for a MINUTE or TWO," Vintage cuts him off - and you watch as she shuffles into Kyuubey's office with the mutant cat bastard in her arms. "Just step in when you've gotten everything settled. Take your time, I'll keep him busy." The kimono-clad girl whispers this as she passes you by - the double doors swinging shut behind her with a decisive metal click.

Leaving you completely and utterly alone with your full-time girlfriend...and apparently, part-time stalker.
>>
>>34809789

You shake your head again, before waving her over - pinching the bridge of your nose under your glasses as you do so. She obeys quickly and commendably enough, managing to stumble over her own feet only a couple of times.

"...If you're going to do this, don't get caught." You tell Midori as she comes to a stop in front of you, now blowing her nose on a handkerchief she'd pulled out from one of her uniform's pockets. "Now, I know I told you to wait for me back at the hall, but apprently you saw the need to follow me regardless." You glower at her for a few more moments, before crossing your arms over your chest. "Explain."

"Um..." Midori fidgets underneath your stare, breaking eye contact with you and focusing instead on her twiddling thumbs. "I...um, sempai, well.."

You light up a cigarette as the green-haired girl in front of you explains her actions, guilt and perhaps...a tiny bit of jealousy coloring her words. Apparently, Midori had been more than willing to believe your smoke break excuse - but Wendy, your ex, had disappeared five exact seconds after you exited the hall. The fact that no one saw the American leave - not even Midori herself- was enough to get your Callidus out of her chair. Enough to clue her in that something was up.

"...I got worried, so I decided to follow," Midori finally manages to maintain eye contact with you here, albeit a wavering one, as if the act herself caused her physical pain. "...Um, I didn't find her anywhere, but I found you talking to them. Miss Vintage, I mean. And since I lost Wendy but still didn't know who they were, I thought I'd follow and see what was going on, because I was worried...and...and...

And what? You frown at her, prompting her to continue.

"Pleasedon'tstareatmelikethatsempai!" She finally ends her confession in a rush, finally throwing up a hand over her own eyes. "I'm really sorry, I won't do it again, I promise! I was just really worried for Sempai...!"

[1/2]
>>
>>34809806

You blink at her in surprise, despite your own disapproval. ...What? You weren't glaring at her that hard, were you?

Midori shakes her head, still keeping her eyes averted from yours. "It feels like Sempai's trying to burn holes right through m-my soul! It's too intense!"

You furrow your brow at this, before pulling out your cellphone and glancing at your reflection on the touchscreen. The sight very nearly making you drop the delicate device.

Midori was right. You do look like you're trying to glare holes through someone's soul.

Your eyes, forever changed by the procedure you undertook in Siberia, are glowing. Specifically, your pupils - the crimson dots set in the middle of your purple irises now small pinpricks of blazing red light, as if backlit by hate strong enough to manifest as fire.

You look fucking evil, is what you're trying to get at here.

No wonder Midori couldn't help but look away.

"A-anyway, Sempai, that's...that's why I followed you." Midori's awkward follow-up to her confession snaps your attention back towards her - and she visibly cringes as your eyes meet once more. "That's all. R-really."

How do you react?

Fuck it, bring her with. She'll will be more useful/interesting the more she knows.

Will also have to figure out what Wendy is up to. And our eyes seem to be possibly more fucked up than usual. That could be a problem.

Ok. Our eyes are glowing. Did they always do that, or is this a new thing?

Might be a sign that the GW corruption has advanced further. I think Deculture mentioned that the Siberia procedure did not give total protection afterall.

Then again, we have only really talked to the three stooges recently, and Deculture also said that the DEagle corrupts us least since its our personal GW. So maybe the glowing eyes are a result of the torture Pinky did to us during the timestop?
>>
Hi, guys! Nothing new from me this week because work has been kind of hectic. I have been working on both Odette and Kumatora's designs, but don't have anything finished yet. Maybe tomorrow?

Kind of. She is one of our aids and our girlfriend. Probably one of the few people we can trust, though that does not mean they will always act in ways we view favorably (such as the wendy kiss).

Maybe this is too important for her but... well, we will see. I have a feeling it has something to do with grief seeds which could be big but not too horribly huge probably.

>>34810177
I think our eyes were red since the operation but it sounds like they are glowing more. Possibly due to steadily progressing corruption or being a bit angry. Maybe both. Would not be the first time our corruption has changed our eyes while expressing anger.

>>34810234
That's why we don't ask, we demand. Though I don't really care for waifu'ing, I just think Midori should come along and do something.
>>
>>34810192
I don't know this is a secret meeting and as >>34810204 pointed out even Sayaka is not invited so I think we shouldn't bring her
>>
>>34810177
I'm pretty sure our eyes didn't glow before. Maybe we should ask the Stooges or Yuu if they can tell us our current Corruption level.
Kirika doesn't like to be bothered, and Risa's loyalty is suspect.
>>
>>34810204
>>34810274
Sayaka isn't also aware of Pinky or the Transcended one, while Midori is. This is probably about Pinky since the First are watching over her grief seed on the moon.

Unprofessional.
>>
>>34810234
>>34810204
We don't ask. We just bring her along. She is also our aide.

And one that is pretty quick on the uptake as she has shown many times in the past. If anyone thinks we wanted to drag her along just because she is our gf then he is a moron.

At the moment she is the only person around that knows how Pinky is the real deal apart from the 3 Stooges.
>>
>>34810312
What, you expect her to reveal herself when she thinks someone else who is dangerous is stalking her target?

I mean I don't think Wendy means us harm but I doubt Midori feels that way.
>>
>>34810271

Anon has it mostly right but there's also a few other factors at play here slmd being trust and another need to know/going to know. We talked before about involving Midori more since she's one of the few persons that Chiaki can trust and, on top of that, she has a convenient metaphorical leash on. More than that, although she can sometimes be impulsive, she has shown good insight. That aside, while the meeting is secret, it was never stated that it was "Warmaster only". If it's too sensitive a subject, we can always have her wait a few steps away, it's no big deal. Then again, AR that point it's going to break into need to know/going to know again.

All that said, someone post Maullar's Kumatora.

We're Warmaster, sometimes you have to use your authority a bit or else everyone forgets you have it.

If the meeting is about something Midori really should not know we can always have her step out.

>>
>>34810376

QB, if he is as insightful as he appears to be, will be pleased that Chiaki is taking insurance and precautions. Vintage will probably be bewildered unless she's well informed in which case she might be affronted or ambivalent on the matter, either or.

This makes sense.

Infact, we should ask what the three stooges know about the GW corruption in general and what other symptoms we should look out for. And whether or not the glowing eyes are a serious concern or just cosmetic issue.

Deculture also mentioned that the bonus we can acquire from Murderface of the three stooges has something to do with increased resistance to GW corruption. So Murderface probably knows quite a bit.

I hope we get to have a full conversation with the three of them soon. Theres lots of things we have to say and ask. Heck, we havent even apologized to Braids yet.

The important thing here, for me at least, is to try and get Midori more involved so that she goes beyond being simply "the girlfriend" and becomes an active character

This.

I don't really waifu in general (more of a comradu-ing guy, if that even exists) and if I did I would go for Wendy, but I think Midori should be something other than the shy timid girl that follows us around and calls us sempai all the time. This seems like a good step in that direction.

Quoting from the previous thread,

"Kyuubey wanted an opportunity to share something with you - something that only Incubators and their most trusted Warmasters know.

It feels like Kyuubey is not going to be happy if we insist on Midori coming along.
But so what, we don't especialy care about his feelings and we aren't here to make Kyuubey's life easier.
It's not unprofessional to insist our best Cadillus is brought along to sneaky secret meetings. Sneaky secret stuff is her job.

You glare at your own surroundings, peering into the shadows lurking around the corridor, daring for any one of them to take on the shape of your ex. At the same time, you manifest the stable form of your Soul Gem onto the upturned palm of your right hand, the spiked bauble glowing in preparation to detect any sneaky Callidus - also in the shape of your ex.

"Sempai?" Midori's eyes go wide at the appearance of your Soul Gem. "I...i-is it supposed to look like that? I don't remember Sempai's looking like that--"

You silence her with a sharp hiss and a glare, before holding out the glowing jewel. Focusing on your attunement to the Callidus beside you to check if there were, in fact any other Callidus lurking about.

"I know you're out here, Wendy," You call into the corridor, stepping forward, the hand holding your Soul Gem outsretched in front of you. "I'm not going to be fucking stalked in my own building. Show yourself."

. . .

Nothing. No response. Only the sound of Midori whimpering from behind a handkerchief crammed against her mouth.

Nothing from your SOul Gem, either. Not even a half-hearted throb, or the dimmest glimmer of light.

+ I didn't...sense anyone else, if that's what you're wondering. + The voice usually crisp and cutting with unfeigned self-importance hisses in your mind in a tired whisper. + Only her. +

...

Well. Fine. Guess Wendy isn't really around, then. Or if she was, she'd left long ago.

You put your Soul Gem away, and turn back to a visibly-exhausted Midori. Her cheeks pink with exertion, as if she'd been doing something really strenuous.

In every position I have ever been that is considered an aide? Being someone's gopher / bitch and tossed aside the moment someone with a nice ass came along

Nice to see someone on the other side who isn't a douche though because I honestly doubt you could be mean if you tried Hat
>>
>>34810730

Not much of a big shot, sadly, but a lot of managerial level work and lots of meetings. At my old job I had two aides and one analyst to help with the load, but at the current one I'm mostly running myself ragged. I might drop dead in a hallway while walking between meetings.

Anyways, having an aide is important, but they're not much help if you don't bring them along.

Business!~

"Y-yes, sempai?" She manages to catch her breath long enough to speak. You raise an eyebrow at this - but you simply shake your head, and then tell her to go back to the assembly hall and wait for you there. Where you're going seems to be a Warmaster access-only thing, so she can't stick around. You'll have that talk with her after all this, back at the apartment.

"Al...alright, sempai." Midori's shoulders droop even as her chest heaves in her effort to get air back into her lungs. "I'm...I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure sempai was okay."

How do you react?

[]Reassure her. "...I'll be fine. It's probably just some super-secret document I need to sign or something."
[]Awkwardly squeeze her hand, give her a small kiss on the cheek, and send her on her way.
[]Nod once, and then walk into Kyuubey's office without another word. She needs to learn.

It wouldn't kill us to to actually follow through with her occasional.
>>
>>34811435
To be fair, this is a bad case to consider. We would turn away anyone else in the cast at this point, too.

In general, Midori's skillset just doesn't work well with ours. We're a very in-your-face frontline fighter, and she's not. Therefore she doesn't go on many combat missions with us.

Anyone who says she's only eyecandy obviously came in after Siberia arc, though.

The problem is that we're dealing with one week waits between threads (it's easy to forget minute details) and we have an unstable population (people voting to bring her then others voting to send her away). Really, there's not much to be done other than talking things through civilly and hoping you can come to a halfway point. Like I said, I'm a little sad that even after two years we still haven't been able to bring Midori up to speed or have her work with Chiaki as a team. But there's only so much you can do when threads occur once, maybe twice, a week, I guess.
>>
>>34810852 >>34810876 >>34810878

You look at Midori's downcast face, before pulling your greatcoat tighter around you. ...You'll be fine, you reassure her. With your luck, it's probably some super-secret document you need to sign with your own blood as ink, or something. Nothing so exciting or dangerous that she needs to worry. And if it's Wendy she's concerned about, well - you're pretty sure she's not around to do anything crazy, either.

The green-haired Midori nods silently at this, her head still bowed as she starts to make her way back down the corridor. You let out a sigh, and make to call out her name, to make sure that she's not beating herself up too much over this - but she beats you to the punch, turning on her heel and running back towards you. Catching you in a very sudden and very brief hug that presses your face against a certain soft and warm part of her anatomy.

Before you can even squirm or squeak in protest, she'd already disengaged, running away, her footsteps bouncing off the corridor walls in a hurried stacatto.

Leaving you with your own cheeks slightly red at the outburst of intimate physical contact - something that you're still getting used to, even after the night you shared.

...At least that's settled, you think to yourself, as you turn to face the huge double doors leading to Kyuubey's office. Now at least you can deal with whatever Kyuubey and Vintage wants to show you - something that's apparently so fucking important that they needed to hire an idol for a smokescreen.

Taking a deep breath, you push through the doors and step into the room, over the threshold. The doors immediately slamming shut behind you, locks clicking and sliding into place.

>>
>>34811818

The sight that greets you is Kyuubey's Office. Unchanged from how you saw it last. The cat tower in the corner. The blindingly-white walls and floors, which you've discovered to actually be screens in and of themselves, able to project and display images that Kyuubey needed to show. The Incubator himself is at his desk, in front of his computer and the array of monitors facing him.

...Nothing too weird. Huh. Maybe it IS going to be that super-secret paperwork you'll need to look over. That's a bit disappointing.

Looking around, you find Vintage off to the side, surreptitiously sipping from what looks like a silver hip flask. And looking at the grimace twisting her face after every sip, it looks like she's dealing with some very strong stuff.

"Oh! Warmaster!" Vintage starts as she notices you staring at her - and the flask immediately disappears into a kimono sleeve, quick enough that for a moment you wonder if there was any flask at all. "How did it go? Everything settled, I hope?"

How do you respond?

[]Yeah. Just needed to have a little talk. ...Sorry you had to see that.
[]Nod. "Let's get on with this, I still have a party to grumble and scowl through."
[]"...You don't need to hide it, you know. I think everyone needs a drink now and then."

Why can't a callidus be trained to help on the front lines? (I mean, look at Wendy) Wetwork, Powerful Callidus illusions (which Midori has a talent for), and her bond with Chiaki make her a unique asset.

It's still not very clear what we can do with that besides callidus check, I'm not sure if Decu confirmed if seeing through her eyes or ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL to make shots for her was a viable thing.

This quest was always going to have a waifu, wasn't it?

The only question has been "which one", and they all have their annoyances and their even-more-annoying fanbases. But Hell, if we could just stick to one, It'd be ok, I guess.

I'm still fucking mad about us voting to keep Wendy around, just because it means the Wendy/Midori war keeps going in high gear. I don't really dislike Wendy, I just hate the constant shitting up of these threads.

Every word I write in my threads is driven by a desire to do better than Dec. I'll probably never be as good as his early stuff, but I'll be damned if I don't outshine this modern endlessly bogged down by wafiu arguments stuff.

That said, the story's still good when read in archived chunks - the threads are just frustrating to be in.
>>
>>34812237
What quest do you run?
>>
>>34812203
Just because you enjoy something doesn't mean you can't call it shit when it's shit.

Not that I think it's shit, but it's not as engaging as it used to be on average, and being candid with Decu is better when the alternative is a hugbox echo chamber.

Reader-Quester feedback is important!

Still my favorite long running quest on tg
>>
>>34812103
Quest is still quite good, only complaint I have is how slow it moves. But since Decu is probably human I cannot blame him.

I am kind of scared it might abruptly end far before it should though. Or that I might abruptly end before it finishes for that matter.
>>
>>34812237
Links and trip or you're full of shit.

>>
>>34812237
Nice motivation. I'm doing mine for fun, because I enjoyed other quests and thought to try my hand at it. I don't think I'm very good and not competing with anyone, but at least I have a few players who find it enjoyable.

Its also quite comfy, I don't think I've had a big fight about an in game decision yet.

How is your quest going, anon?
>>
>>34811379
>Has no one considered it was Wendy disguised as Midori?
We did. But we did the Soulgem test. If there's any Callidus other than Midori nearby, they're good enough to avoid our one simple means of checking for their presence.

So either we start poking into every shadow, or we proceed assuming that we probably are being followed by someone and say "fuck it."

Wendy probably just went to the toilet or something.
>>
>>34812293
>>34812248

>>
>>34812354

>>
>>34811855
>Why can't a callidus be trained to help on the front lines?
She probably could. But it's going to take training that Midori apparently doesn't have at the moment, and time which is a luxury we don't have, either.

I like this quest a lot better since Chiaki became Warmaster, honestly. Dec is the reason I got into questing in the first place.
>>
>>34812529
>>34812546
Oh fine Midori a shit

You twisted my arm anyans

My point stands even if Chiaki's a bad example, though. I have nobody else I can cite, but it stands to reason. We don't exactly run with rank and files so it's hard to find anyone to talk about aside from Midori.
>>
>>34812516
>pure ground beef
wouldn't put behind her to use long pork instead every once in a while
>>
>>34812447
Don't mistake subtle for incompetent.

She's a competent magical girl. But in the Ninth, that places her somewhere in the bottom half of the list of "combat effective" Meguca.

BUT, it needs to be noted that not every mission is a combat mission, and when all you have is a hammer-space shield filled with ordanance, every problem starts to look like a nail.

Diversity of opinion and skills is important, so in that sense Midori fills an important role of "sanity check".
>>

>>
I'd rather spend ten threads on one topic than one and brush through it sloppily.

Decu has thus far been reliable in not making long scenes pointless, they mean a lot to relationship development. I'm more concerned about the voters being irresponsible and not taking things seriously, like the threesome thing.

Well I wasn't going to say it (because it's a highly unofficial source sort of thing and actual important quest-related info generally stays in the threads/writeups) but someone else pointed it out - Yeah, I end up giving a lot of Rabbits trivia on ask.fm through 'What would/did your girls do for X/in X situation?'

Mostly I didn't want to end up running off with a thousand different narrators, but in the end it meant a lot of characters only got a little screen time in Wendy's flashback stuff. I do intend to go into more depth with what they're doing presently, but I was planning on waiting until the Church was more in the spotlight for that. "Good to hear it, absolutely!" There's a bit of a slur in Vintage's words, now, not that noticeable but easily spotted if you knew what to listen for. Either the stuff she was hitting on the sly was really strong stuff, or she was a lightweight through and through. You've got money on the former, at least. "Always work things out face to face whenever you can, Warmaster, that's the most important thing I can teach you. Well, the second most important thing, anyway!"

...What's the first most important thing, then?

"'Around girls with green hair, always beware!'" The Equerry of the First giggles, before holding a hand to her head, hissing in pain. "...Dear me. Sorry. I thought you were going to take a while, and...well, I found my own entertainment for a bit."

Huh. That's what they call it way up there in the moon, then? Classy.

Well, anyway. You still have a party to scowl and grumble through, so you'd like to get on with it.

"Right, right! Of course!" Vintage nods, wincing again, before leading the way to the center of the room - where Kyuubey busied himself on his computer, multiple screeds of information scrolling through the screens. "Warmaster's here, Kyuubey, and ready for her super-secret briefing."

"Very well." Kyuubey nods. "I'll start the projection momentarily. Please wait until then, Karasawa, Matsuda."

Vintage nods, before turning away slightly to massage her temple, her face an irritated mask of migraine-pain. "Devil's Moonshine is right. Urgh, and to think she drinks THIS every day..."

Silence. Awkward silence, broken only by the rapid machine-gun fire clicks of Kyuubey's ear-appendages typing on his keyboard. It's...a disturbing sight at best.

[1/2]
>>
>>34813045
And who is Marla?
>>
>>34813100

You turn towards Vintage, the Equerry still suffering from what looks like the fastest hangover in existence - and you whisper what you wanted to say to her as you slide up beside her slight, shorter frame. That she didn't need to hide her boozing, and how you think that everyone needs a drink every now and then.

"O-oh. You saw?" Vintage looks guiltily at you. "It's...well. Another reflex, from staying so long up there." She shakes her head. "Alcohol's not exactly welcome in the moonbase. Forbidden, actually, just like red meat."

...What? Not only alcohol, but red meat, too? How--

"The Warmaster believes in a very strict and a very clean diet. Absolute purity, inside and out." The venom in Vintage's voice could have poisoned an entire continent. "Of course, whatever her diet is, the rest of us needs to follow, too."

...So, she's--

"Vegan. Yes." Vintage shakes her head, before massaging her temple again. "Let's...not talk about it."

Right.

Fuck. You had an idea that the Warmaster of the First was going to be something else, but not like this.

Before you could needle Vintage for more details, however, it's here that the room turns dark - the only light now coming from the screens of Kyuubey's computer. After another moment, those flicker out of existence, too - and you blink in the complete pitch-black darkness as you hear Kyuubey's voice beside you.

"Try and stand still, Matsuda. Do not be alarmed. This won't take long."

What won't take long? What the fuck is this--

You're cut off here, as light blooms underneath you - and you look down to see a circle of blue light etching itself on the floor under your feet. Surrounding you in its perimeter. A beep, and letters flash into existence onto the curve of the circle, making up your name and your rank. "OCCUPANT IDENTIFIED. CHIAKI MATSUDA, WARMASTER OF THE NINTH OFFICIO ASSASSINORUM." A voice speaks out in the room. "VERIFIED FOR ALPHA CLEARANCE."

[2/3]
>>
>>34813085
>>Midori is, again, taller and more well endowed than other girls her age

Papa Hanegawa, what have you been feeding her??
>>
>>34813122

Another beep, another robotic declaration. "OCCUPANT IDENTIFIED. THE NINTH, INCUBATOR OF THE NINTH OFFICIO ASSSASSINORUM. VERIFIED FOR OMEGA CLEARANCE."

One final beep. One final announcement. "OCCUPANT IDENTIFIED. SEVATAR, FORMER WARMASTER OF THE NINTH AND CURRENT EQUERRY OF THE FIRST OFFICIO ASSASSINORUM. VERIFIED FOR ALPHA CLEARANCE."

And it's here that a giant globe - one made out of pure light, with all the continents shaped and teeming with color - drops down from the ceiling. A hologram of the world, projected from above, a simulation of a planet looking real enough to touch. Another globe manifests beside this, a smaller one that orbits around the first - the moon, complete with a pimple of a moonbase and the malignant tumor of a Witch's gigantic spiked grief-seed attached to its dark side.

You notice immediately that the moon - and some of the continents on the slowly-turning globe - are marked with crimson shapes, each one irregularly shaped. Each one glowing with the same malevolent red that your pupils had, earlier.

"Still the same old codename, Kyuubey?" Vintage calls out. "That's sentimental of you."

"I thought I updated it, actually. But perhaps I didn't manage to, in time." Kyuubey returns. "But nevertheless, Matsuda, this is why we brought you here." He nods to the globe. "See those areas on the globe marked with red?"

"The most well-kept secret in our business," Vintage smiles. "The Akashic Points. Portals to the Akashic Realm, where gods and mortals meet."

The biggest of them is somewhere in Europe. Britain, it looks like.

It has a name, unlike the rest.

'Ocularis Terribus'.

How do you react?

Actually, if she asked to, we'd pretty much have to.

This is definitely not something that Midori needs to know yet. I don't see any problem with my previous vote (the feature of bringing her along would have been nice and she could have simply waited outside), but now that it's been established as above her clearance level, well, she'll just have to deal.

There are other important things that we really, really need to talk to her about though, and I hope we get around to them soon.

The Twelfth Incubator's Office is positioned at a surprising place - in one of the National Theatre's loges. The Archive was rebuilt just under it, so we can simply take a lift from there. Our Incubator has always boasted being something of an anthropologist, and since we were moving everything years ago, he used the opportunity to enjoy music arts during work, and focus on our culture more.

When I've entered the office, he was doing something with the computer alright, but through the one-way glass, I could also see the actors on the stage rehearsing something, repeating lines, occasionally starting a song, but never getting past a few verses before the director would yell at them.

"This is a good example of how narrow human perception is, Jarmila." He responded to my silence, not caring to face me, but using my given name as always. It definitely leaves a sense of pretense. "The play is quite interesting, and could provide, to the more curious viewer, a gateway into a whole new unique theatre genre. But, as it often happens, all you humans remember is the title song. The need to translate it also obscures much of the meaning here."

On a wagon, bound for market
there's a calf with a mournful eye;
High above him, there's a swallow
winging swiftly through the sky;
How the winds are laughing,
they laugh with all their might;
Laugh and laugh the whole day through
and half the summer's night.

"It's also quite fitting to our cause, what do you think?" Was he gloating about how he's got us under his thumb?

I did know both the song and this cattle allegory. It especially starts making sense once you spend enough time in the Twelfth, and understand that under all those esoterics and difficult words, there's really just a huge slaughterhouse of the Witch flesh. You get good or go Witch. I know the Twelfth is special in this way, but don't see into the exact methods of this being handled, except for having to purge what's left of the newbies all the time. Grief must flow, or so the cat says.

But now that I thought of it, does participating in it all make me a cow?

"I don't understand art, sir. I came to give you report on Barbara, as obvious. She wasn't a cow or a swallow. I guess she was a bitch to kill."

"Make sure to pass the story of your heroic prevailing to one of the Gatherers. More importantly, how many causalities did you have?" Damn cat kept watching his screen, like I was the pet in this room. He looks so silly, I keep forgetting all the jokes are lost on this guy. He may be good at mimicry and has got a definite talent for ad-libs, but under his act is a mask of cold steel.

"Only one squaddie girl had died, and no expensive wounds were sustained." Well, the one I got from having to the Mach Lunge hurts, but won't send the limb to Jackdaw's ice box just yet.

"I've noticed that your arm-"

"Though wait, damn, actually, sorry. Two girls are dead. That's why I came late. Jackdaw should already have gotten both the bodies a hour ago or so - we sent them in advance."

"How rude. Don't jump into your boss's speech like that. And don't make this kind of a mistake when reporting." Wiggle, wiggle. If only you could make a key charm out of that tail.

[2/12]
>>
>>34813890
or it's a reflection of the fact that we were her.

OR it's a trick of the shadows.
>>
>>34813971
"I am sorry. The Info-Cyte girl had witched out."

His tail slowed down to a still, with a very controlled movement. "That is... actually very interesting, Jarmila. From the Info-Cyte's maker, I hear that was out of the question. You should talk to her, it's Renata Lichtenberg, the Librarian with synthetic arms. Our main hacker, formerly of Fourth." An incubator using given names and nicknames is also odd, girls who transferred here say that a lot. "I'll go over your account of her later, assuming you didn't let her get away. Renata will need it as soon as possible, though."

I've seen that one with metal arms a bunch of times. Obviously she would be a transferee from the Fourth, but. "Was that girl really ranked?"

"The thing to consider here is," he kept going on, "Figuring out how much corruption could mechanization of thought save on somebody other than herself was one of the experiment's purposes." The ugly mascot had finally moved, and, for once, his step seemed oddly unsure.

"This is a very strange situation we may have gotten here, mhmm. I understand that you are quite the ideologically driven person. You should be glad, because today is a very special day - you will get to discuss ideology." He turned his head slowly towards me, in a way that shouldn't be possible for any animal with a spinal column. That actually had more shock value than whatever turn scare setup he could have had planned to try out, what with delaying eye contact.

"Well then, Jarmila. Are you familiar with the Riddle of Witch Flesh?

I've resisted the urge to scratch my head here. The Riddle of Witch Flesh? Don't care about these occasional heated debates the Vanus have, but they really wouldn't shut up about this one. "Isn't it basically asking what's the right amount of emotion in life, and how to tell?"

[3/12]
>>
>>34813986
"Yes, that. You know, it's not just sophistry, it's a matter of life and death for you girls. Panna wants to talk to you today, among other people. And discuss this riddle. So, that's another thing you have to do today. She said she would come at the Archive's reception, and that the other Rank Leaders have already been notified."

"Well, it's where they both live. That's... okay by me. I've wanted to stop by there anyway. Drink some beer with them and complain about my day." I couldn't help being kind of blunt, compared to his curly speech

"I know you have just done a lot of work, but this is really important, and she's adamant that she must talk to all of you Rank Leaders together today. You'd better go. Seeds go to the Librarium, I can't take these just yet." He turned back, apparently considering me dismissed.

"I'll be going then, sir. I've told Popelka to report to you in person. She would understand how Squad Libra had performed better than I do."

And so I've left the cat to his own thoughts, which were, in all likelihood, him plotting to screw us all over with the least effort. Like a twisted child that mechanically plays with its toys because that's what they are for, but never has fun. A toy breaking doesn't even make it flinch.

Or like a farmer who grooms his animals and plays with them for years on the end before having to butcher them, because that was the point all along. He doesn't enjoy the act of betrayal and killing. Happy meat just sells the best.

Such is the painful truth. He doesn't really care about humans at all.

Following the familiar branch of tubes out of the Elevator, I've arrived to the Archive's gate, and the booth built into the wall next to it. Anyone who would happen to wander this deep would be put off by the single led light illuminating a massive steel door.

That is, if they could see it. Which they would most likely not, because the girl standing guard next to the gate would usually either be a Callidus trainee maintaining the Rank Leader's double illusion of seeing darkness along with a touching a stone wall, or the Rank Leader herself. For a third of a day, though, and as was the case when I came there, the Vindicare Rank Leader would sit at the booth instead

Martina, who should, by all rights, have seen them coming from a hundred meters away and could make precautions. Provided she actually physically looked where she was supposed to, which no guard really does. Nothing bad ever came out of it, though. I could actually see the light when I've turned corner, so it must have been her shift.

"Papers please - oh yeah, figured the huge person there was you." The booth girl's voice had skipped a whole octave, to accompany the shift of her social gears from seeing a friend. She had her blindfold pulled over hair, with one hand remaining on it like she wasn't sure which way to pull it, making her look like a scatterbrain. That was precious, because it was far from the truth.

Since it seemed a bit like I've caught her reading porn mags on the job or something, I've decided to tease her a bit more on it. "Won't you still have to probe me with clairvoyance, though? What if I am a Callidus? I guess this looks like a bunch of halves in a bag to you, but it's totally a bomb or some shit."

"Oh, you're okay. Still saw you with one eye. It's the only way I can do something else on the boredom shift." That sounds like it must make her head hurt, though. She had already hidden whatever she was reading under the desk, it really must have been something disgraceful. "You've got magic on your hand, though, did somebody wreck you? My day was shit too."

This already seemed like a beginning of a good, long dudebrochick talk, one of those that will take hours, but in which we won't actually say anything we haven't said before. So, let me tell you about Martina for a bit, instead of showing, since the way this had happened doesn't show her off enough.

In order to be granted the title and rank "Librarian of the Twelfth", a magical girl has to meet a set of requirements:

To be at the peak of her Vanus potential, showing consistent perfect results in mundane tasks. Martina made her Vanus marks with flying colors.

To be resourceful, knowledgeable, and experienced with both inner mechanisms of the Officio and the groundwork, able to fill different roles than just those usually expected of a Vanus: She must have some at least basic combat training and skill, and deep understanding of magic arts, along with the ability to widely apply them to most problems. Martina can do some crazy things with her magic, and both kill and fix problems like nobody's business.

And lastly, to prove with a clean track record that she is worthy of trust, disciplined, and in general fit to become the Incubator's confidant in some manner, dusting off one of the Officio's closet skeletons, never telling anyone what she came to know. As I understand it, this is where it breaks, because Martina is not dependable enough. Her results are too wall-to-wall to handle the subjects that Juunibey needs clean and safe.

But, much like me, she does pretty good when you leave her to do her own thing.

Are there actually lots of gods in the world then? How many are there in addition to Homucifer and Pinky?
>>
>>34814043
That's why, after she had beaten on Liliana's skin with two Grief Seed's worth of enchanted sticks and stones, even if it had little effect and even if she had needed a flying friends help to accomplish it, Juunibey didn't have her replace one of the dead Librarians, but rather the Vindicare Rank Leader, who got gulped down like a chump.

We're similar people, in that we're both thick headed and hard to put a leash on, but also the strongest around. I'll repeat that I never felt like a leader, but Martina apparently does, and says that both prodigies and leaders must be selfish, else they'll never get anywhere. I've got some real issues with her personality, but due to circumstance, she's the closest thing to a friend I've got.

Well, we're friends now, but Martina is a very inconvenient person at first. You will find that she's such a massive pile of issues, it almost makes her seem capricious and many-faced when you get closer to her, because you can never tell what she's projecting at right now. Through her concealed misanthropy, and constant trying to weed her own banes out of others, she gets her job of a Vindicare Rank Leader done.

Panna says she's just histrionic, that I am a jock, and Toy is too soft for our trade, but that's because Panna always has to be a complete cunt to everyone.

I fell on the sofa in that tiny crib, having seen the bed already occupied by Toy, who must have come earlier and tried to catch a nap before the meeting. "Seriously. That fucking cat. If I see that fucking cat try to turn scare me one more time."

Martina immediately gave me the mirror of reason that I've needed, twisted as it was. "He's trying, though. Isn't that worthy of respect? Like, keep in mind this, he must have been at it for eighty years. That's amazing. You've got to respect that, you've got to."

"...It's amazingly stupid of him, if that's what you're getting at. At least it wasn't the fake laughter. That was horrible, god damn."

They don't -and aren't allowed to- keep a bottle opener around for me, so I've always had to conjure up a tiny metal spike and use it to open the bottle cap, which was kind of wasteful. It's always the annoying routines like this that really get to you. I also have to carry my bottles back with me, but Toyen still has it worse, since she can't smoke underground. It also seems to disgust the Vanus when she brings it up, since the Officio spaces are always kept so sterile. You would think that they wouldn't mind, since they so often pretend that shit doesn't stink.

"Sure, but. If my laptop had worked for eighty years, that would be an amazing laptop. Say it runs one of these programs where it tries to learn to speak by talking to you. Except, if you talk to it for eighty years, who cares if the conversational program on it passes the Turing test yet. You grow so attached to it, you even start talking like it, there's no difference anymore."

That was a new thought right there. It had me thinking about it for a while. "Is that like what happened to Panna? Did she talk to an Incubator for so long that she forgot he's fucked up, and became like him? Started seeing the world through the beady eyes?"

"You can ask her herself in a short while.", she turned again. "That reminds me, Toy, I am going to need the bed. Panna insists that since I used to be a Vanus, she wants me to give my account in trance."

[8/12]
>>
>>34814081
Hearing her name called out, the second resident of the booth came to her senses, and sat on the bed's edge. "Sorry. Fell asleep waiting." Then, her mind caught up, and she gave Martina a long, tired stare through her sleepy eyes. "Like, in trance? Vanus trance, like they do in rituals? Like when Řeřicha gets high? So that you can't lie or backtrack on what you've said? What a bitch."

Martina must have been overjoyed, being able to correct somebody that hard.

"Right, except none of what you've said is a given. It differs by person. Like, it usually allows you to focus more on whatever you are doing in the Administratum. Scryers or seers are usually unconscious during it, but enhance their results like this. They get more worked up. Gatherer candidates would stay conscious and focus on digging in their memory, so they can remember what you've said better, and add notes to the account, down to subtle stuff like the faces you were making. My version is that too. And since the blindfold already allows me to see EVERYTHING down to the pimples on their butt and junk food in their stomach, and you can only do so much sparring, I've tried to push the trance a bit as well, when I was bored."

Married to the job alright. Dirudo, was it? But I have no right to poke fun at her here, since I like to abuse the Eversor trance too.

She held her head in her hands now, staring outside. "It took years, but when I focus these days, I basically get photographic memory of everything I've seen lately. So, the Gatherers really like me now, is what I am getting at." she made a short pause, probably realizing that wasn't what she had originally wanted to say. "Besides, it's not like I would lie to Panna now. It's the opposite - I want to throw the whole thing in her face. Because it's all her fault."

I took a swig from the flask. My sincere pity goes to all the poor foreign workaholic magical girls who will never taste bottled bohemian beer after work. "Was it so bad? I mean, sure, retirement missions suck, glad to have them off my back, but still. Don't you do a lot of those?"

"Let me think about that. Hm. Yeah, I do, but no, you're wrong. You can't actually get used to everything. I am not even really a cynic, or fucking Yossarian like Toyen. I have to look into their faces, you know." Martina seemed to struggle with the proper volume to give her voice, like when you're talking to a driver. She wanted us to hear her, without turning back, but also didn't want anyone possibly passing the Archive's gate to hear, since the conversation was straying in a classified direction.

Well, I could take that burden by talking myself, for a while. "Yeah, and get this: I have to look into their heads, and take a trip through their pocket personal hell. How's that not worse?"

That may be when they've also noticed how I've been starting to slip a bit.

"..."

"I also keep count, you know? I've seen thirteen hundred and forty Barriers within five years of service, give or take ten. Some of them don't really count, or I only got a glimpse or something." I've lowered my voice a bit too. "Anyway, that's a Witch almost every day. It also means I've purged an entire Officio in my life, or the Twelfth almost twice over. For the record, I normally use three Seeds a month, since I've got a lot of juice and just smash most of them down with a weapon. You'd think that it eventually gets old, like that all girls would mostly think about wanting to have a dick and that the Barriers would have that. Like that psychologist who wanted to fuck his mom, Freud. That kind of a thing. But no. Still new and new exciting silly shit coming my way."

"..."

"Anyway, I actually think that this keeps me sane. If they started repeating and I felt like I've figured people out, that would drive me crazy. So, I get what you're saying. I don't mind answering the question either, and my answer is also no. I don't just fire and forget. Hehe, no pun intended."

Martina was trying to keep her eyes on outside of the booth, but still shot me a look over the shoulder. "That's some strange math. You do realize the problems with it, right?"

"Yeah. The coolest part about it is that I didn't even kill half the Witches we've produced in that time. Not even fucking close. Not even a quarter of them. A tenth, more like. It's sort of hard to not figure out the... You know. The thing."

Toyen seemed already woken up by us talking things of that sort, so she asked Martina the good question. "Is this going to be about the thing?"

"Pretty sure it's going to be about the thing. It was real crazy and weird. And it's not like this was my first time doing this. Panna has to do the gatherer's role herself because nobody else is really allowed to, well, even hear it. Except you, today, finally. For some reason."

Clearly, this mission she had ben on must have been super bad. Worse than murdering your friends and telling your friends about it, which is what a retirement mission normally entails.

So, when she came, there wasn't much small talk. It was obviously the first thing we had to ask. Why is this so important?

"Because this time, I happen to be dying."

There was a hint of amusement in her voice, being able to tell this to the three people in the world who had probably wanted to murder her the most.

"...After Jarmila left the garden in the morning, I had my soul gem faint on me. This body underwent clinical death for a few minutes, and wouldn't move when I came to." She waved her palm around, like when you're trying to get the itch out of it in the morning.

"I won't humor you with stories of what it's like to be old. But this means I could basically leave you any moment now. I probably won't, but it could happen. In theory."

Martina showed the most empathy of us all, actually having something to ask after a long pause. "So, this is because you've still got unfinished business. No last will, you're basically passing the Officio on right now."

"Exactly."

"Why us? Why not pick a Chief Librarian - or, hell, another Warmaster's Aide like you - and have her just keep doing what you did? Didn't the cat have you make, like, hectoliters of the Potion for future use?"

Panna tapped her knuckles on the table, and laid her shades on it, maybe to indicate that she's finally being level with us. "The problem with that is that I can't really recommend the Incubator any of the Librarians or my Venenum in good conscience. Jackdaw and Řeřicha have what it takes, if we are talking skill, but neither is a leader. They also are too talented, if you know what I mean by that. They lack the versatility. And perspective. And let's be honest, neither has much common sense."

While the Aide was moving her chair to the back of the crib next to the bed, where Martina had already lied, Toyen had to sit by the table too. While she could, she said the thing on everyone's mind. "Don't get angry, Panna, but you're pretty batshit crazy yourself."

Didn't even twitch her brow. She didn't even insult anyone so far, so it really seemed like a grave matter. "Just listen for a while. After you hear Martina's story from this morning, it will all make much more sense."

And then the session was all ready, started, and Martina would start saying all those interesting things. I should get the account itself from Umika, and stick it under this. By now, at least that's going to be easy.

Dead Neptune
:Chapter 01:

At the bow of the Tacoma, Alice leaned on the railings. The sea churned and divided before her, the wind blowing through her outfit and tossing up her auburn hair, her blonde highlights accentuating her wavy, slightly curly hair.

Three ships trailed behind, each flying the flag of a blue pearl with a trident and a soul gem. The first two vessels following were the cruisers Ticonderoga and Yorktown, and the ship bringing up the rear was the destroyer Chandler. The battlecruiser up front waved the same flag, sailing to a particular island somewhere between Japan and Australia.

This was no Officio. None of that bureaucracy bullshit. Officially, they’d be written down as renegades, magical girls gone rogue. These particular rebels, however, liked to call themselves Dead Neptune.

That said, rogue magical girls were usually hunted down and killed to prevent any kind of mass killings or heists. Dead Neptune spent most of its time lying low, avoiding raising any eyebrows of the Officios around the world. They usually took mercenary assignments, taking jobs as guns for hire. Sometimes it’d be shooting shit out of the water, other times it was to defend a hill from a battalion of soldiers.

It was somehow enough to support their way of life. Magical girl pirates.
>>
Living at sea wasn’t too hard. After the usual necessary assimilation to the sea, some girls decided that living on water wasn’t too bad. Though there were expectations, the atmosphere aboard the four ships was more relaxed than in any office building. More casual. Doctrines differed, too, nullifying the disasters of Eversors being pinned down by a single sniper or Vindicares locked in a room with a blade.

Life at sea also meant girls hailing from all over the world. Those unhappy with their incubator or just wanting to get away would work their way through hoops and up ladders, eventually finding themselves part of the organization.

The sky melted into an ominous grey. A short, cute chime brought Alice back to earth, her attention shifting downwards. Fishing her phone out of her pocket, the screen lit up and displayed a few lines of text. It was from Jessica.

>Hey Alice!~
>Come up top!
>Witch in the water!
>Maybe!
>( ̄。 ̄)y-~~

A breath escaped her lips. The Warmaster was usually like this. Playful, energetic. Some people thought she was too much so. Some think it’s a mystery how she manages to hold the whole organization together so well, even more so if Jessica was even the same person when she was serious or angry. Her body language seemed to change at the drop of a hat.
>>
>>34814196
Stowing her phone, Alice paused, taking one more look at the sea before heading inside. Even though dealing with Jess could get tough, at least she was enthusiastic about doing most of what paperwork. Or most of what paperwork there was.

She stepped away from the railing and strode past the the two triple gun turrets, heading into the base of the tower of the Alaska-class. Navigating through the halls, she was greeted with everything from nods to casual salutes, all gestures accompanied by a smile. She returned the greetings with a nod, steadily moving towards the observation deck.

She leisurely opened the door, spotting a brown haired girl patrolling the windows with a set of binoculars wrapped in her bandaged hands. The brown haired girl acknowledged Alice with a small wave as she came in, breaking her stern stare with a smile for only just a moment.

Alice tepidly joined Jessica. “Scanners’re pickin’ up Witch sigs. Everyone’s already on alert. We think it’s gonna show up portside. Ninety-nine percent chance.” Her stare remained unbroken, peering through the glass frequently.

“So why’d you call me up here?” Leaning back against the panel of electronics, Alice started messing with a paperclip, trying to fix it into any shape that it’d submit to.

“Just to have my trusty Equerry with me in case shit hits the fan.”

“Mmm.”

Tommorow?

>>
>>34814215
The four ships continued journeying to the island, swaying gently as the waves pushed against their sides. Silence was heard aboard the Tacoma’s observation deck, save for the
beeping of computers and clicking of buttons.

An unnaturally large ripple began to surface, a depression in the sea starting to become visible. The ground shook. Sirens blared and guns turned portside, followed by the buzzing over the intercom.

“WITCH ATTACK IMMINENT. PORTSIDE, 3500 METERS. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. REPEAT. WITCH ATTACK IMMINENT. PORTSIDE, 3500 METERS. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

The Warmaster was already moving. Jessica immediately started barking orders to the crew, followed by nods and a chorus of reports replying to her. Alice, on the other hand, stayed put, fiddling with the morphing paperclip held in place by her dexterous fingers.

The sea collapsed into the depression and exploded. A serpent-like form rose from the water, roaring to life. Immediately, the guns of the Tacoma and the cannons of the other ships unloaded, striking the witch with a barrage of explosions.
