Even from the outside, you can smell spices in the air, hear the murmur of overlapping voices. You push open the carved wooden doors, stepping into the inn proper.

The space would seem weird at home- but for this world, the odd assortment of tables, benches and stools looks right. One full half of the tables are human sized, curving benches dotted with early risers on each side. They cluster around the fire, spreading out and leaving a wide path in the centre. A bar, half under a set of stairs, covered in kegs and a small variety of glass bottles. A doorless frame leads further in, and the wafting smells of cooking food billow out from it.

The other half of the room is clearly set for those not quite human shaped. There's a pair of tables without any chairs at all, another set with oversized perches all around it, and a single table set with stools.

Conversation slows as you enter, harpy in tow- but the diners quickly turn back to their meals, chatter resuming. A woman dressed in a classic barmaids outfit waves for you to sit, and you head to the chair-less table, snagging a perch before dropping your body to the ground. Jin hops lightly to the wooden post, shifting feathers this way and that as she settles.

The barmaid is by before you've finished settling in, an oversized mug for you in one hand, and a regular sized one with a pair of handles for Jin.
"Ladies," she drawls.
"Come to eat us out of hearth'n'home, then?"
She's wearing a catlike smirk, though Jin gives her a serious look.
"I cannot eat that much food."
She lets out an unladylike snort, covering up her face to hide the laughter.
"Jinni, one of these days, yer gonna discover sarcasm an' metaphors, and the whole world will open up before you."
"I can fly, yes? The whole sky is open."
"Yeah, just like that."

She turns to face you, crossing her arms.
"What can I get you, sweetheart?"

I was re-reading the quest when I found this passage and realised why Ephram is so simple.

>>They shoot past the three of you, but there isn't enough room on this side of the tree - Ephram slams into a branch and bounces off, catching his safety line and dangling upside down in a daze as Zach shouts his triumph from the bottom of the tree.

Now whenever he does something embarrassing we can just say "Oh don't mind Ephram, he fell on his head when he was 2 days old."

"I- Um, I haven't eaten really anything but raw meat, yes? So- I'd like to try something else. Maybe start small?"
"Plenty of time t'eat a whole animal, right?"
"I don't think you could fit the kind of animals I eat over the fire."

She grins.
"Oh, you're gonna be a fun one. I'll bring out a bit of everything. Got the note from Terry, so don't be worrying about money, yeah?"
"Theresa?"
"Mmmm. Ran around half the village looking like she'd had a good time in bed, nattering on about silk and gold. Keep Jinni away from the fire, eh? Birds got an obsession.

You both turn to look at Jin, who turns back from staring at the fire to face you.
"We do not!"
You both laugh, the waitress waving you off as she heads back to the kitchen.

"Are you going to share, or did you want something else, Jin?"
"I am fine with trying things. Not fire, yes."
You give her a look. There's an expression of mild panic crossing her face.
"I am not obsessed with fire!"
"Of course."
"Not!"
"I believe you."

The kitchens smells get stronger- and the barmaid returns, wielding a pair of gigantic platters covered in gently steaming meat. Your mouth waters, all six eyes zeroing in on the food. She laughs as she sets them down- Yours with a knife and fork, and Jin's already chopped into smaller pieces. You manage to thank her- On your sake as well as Jin's as the harpy has dove face-first into her food, and is now chewing noisily.

You start carving chunks of everything, barely taking time to chew. Slabs of beef, roast pork, chicken, spiced game. Pork, definitely the pork. Which isn't to say you don't wholly devour everything- just that you take a bit of time with the pork. The maid returns, and you put forth your orders- Jin just wants another platter.

You ask for an entire pig.
>>
>>34773937
At some point in your wanton devastation of the inn's supplies, you realize that the human half is blatantly staring. Not that it matters. You haven't eaten this well since your rebirth. Game, eating your catches still warm- They're both amazing. Adrenaline is one hell off a seasoning. But seasonings are also one hell of a seasoning. Maybe every once in a while? You'll make time. Your sibling would probably enjoy it too... Hmm. You'd need to bring the meat then, probably, you think as you tear through a flank. Barring being built onto a farm, the inn is not going to have enough to feed a family of arachne.

You let out grand, satisfied sigh. Jin even looks drowsy, a dopey smile writ on her face. It's not the only thing on her face, though. You grab a rag from your pouch and wipe her off.
"You don't use your hands to eat? Or your feet?"
"It'sssss.... easier, yes?"
She sounds half asleep.

Once you're happy with her state of cleanliness, you replace her on your shell, picking yourself up and stretching. The wreckage of your breakfast is spread across the table: Empty platters, the skeletal remains of your latest victim.

The barmaid cackles as you make to leave.
"Come back soon, y'hear! It does the old bastards heart good to have to work every once inna while."
You wave at each other as you go, and the other patrons busy themselves pretending they didn't watch you eat a table of livestock.

You step into the street with a full stomach and a full day ahead of you. Where too?

I thing we should suggest town-life to Elle. Bet she'd love it. She could live in town and trade silk and silk-goods.
Wouldn't need to hunt at all. She could just go to the inn or market and buy anything she wanted.

The town would love a steady supply of silk. Would be good for everyone.

Get Jin cleaned, and start making that undershirt for the armor.
>>
>>34774673
Now I'm curious, where will everyone end up? Cuz Spidermom is the only spider we've met so far in the forest, which makes me think that once we all grow up, we're going to have move away from each other.
I mean, more than one spider family in a small area is gonna devastate the animal population.
>>
I can't stay longer but I love this quest and the way OP writes the characters. Goodnight!
>>
>>34774942
Well, from our overhead, we saw that spiders are distributed throughout the forest wide enough to not interfere with each other's hunting.
>>
>>34774941
We do need to work on that undershirt.
We'll busy ourselves with it while jin's doing her thing, and then while we're waiting on the steps of the blacksmith.
>>
>>34774942
>>34774984
Yeah, arachnie have to stay spread out to prevent over hunting. Mom has a sister that also lives in the forest.

When the monster civilization collapsed, we had a much higher population, but the loss of infrastructure and things like animal husbandry meant we had to return to the old ways of hunting in the wilds.

Lot less of us now, and a lot more spread out.

I hope we can rebuild the alliance and our civilisation some day.
>>

>>

Does this mean we can finally get ourselves a roof?
>>
You stifle a yawn and change direction, heading for the river. Jin's soft breathing evens out behind you. Did she fall asleep? Can harpies sleep upright like regular birds?

Your train of thought continues as you weave through town- You end up at the river, wondering if Jin would be able to hang onto electrical wires. Probably not. You don't think big birds could do it? Wikipedia is a long ways away.

You step onto the riverbed, cool water lapping at your legs. Despite your colouration, it's kind of apparent that you spent the even killing things: More than a few of your legs are coated in a fine spray of blood. A quick examination shows your friends talons are in the same boat. You step further into the water, heading forward until you guess you're a foot shy of Jin's height.

You set yourself down in the water, waving to a pair of fishermen upstream, and unpack. You strip yourself and your friend down to a breast band and underwear. Then a few rags are dipped into the river and wrung out, and a harpy is dipped into the river and left there. She shivers a bit, making a weird "Mnnmnmnmnmn" noise before pressing up against you for warmth.

How she manages it while unconscious is beyond you.

You don't want her catching cold- But you also don't want bloody footprints all over your shell. You use the rags like an impromptu shower, squeezing the water free so you can wash your friends hair without dunking her. She rubs her head into your hands as you untangle her hair, murmuring.
>>
>>34775408

You wind up holding her one handed while you scrub her talons clean- She's apparently ticklish. Which means you spend as much time chasing her limbs around as you do cleaning them. With one harpy cleaned to your satisfaction, you leave her snoozing on a rock after dabbing her dry as you set about getting clean yourself.

You wade deeper into the river, letting the water flow up over your shell as you scrub at it, flakes of dried blood coming free in the current. Your red carapace shining, you take a moment to dunk yourself into the river, wiping your face clean. You come up with a gasp, waddling back to the rock lined shored and your lazy partner. You towel off your hair before spreading yourself over the rock.

You doze a bit yourself, coming to as the sun climbs higher- Not quite noon, but getting their. Jin has progressed to outright snoring. You're beginning to suspect she's not so much nocturnal as she is lazy. You form up a makeshift nest, and she curls into it with a satisfied sound. Pullign yourself up the bank, you make your way back into town.

>Smithy- He's gotta be done now. Right?
>Check in with the trader- Elle's going to go nuts. Being able to live off of weaving? Maybe they've got an arachne sized house.

>>

>Rebuild the whole thing? Probably not.

Screw that, we'll make it bigger and better than ever. Eventually. I expect it to take a lot of time, but we can do it.

Spiders, harpies, moths and humans. We will be stronger together than any of us could be alone.

With the protection of our little civilisation, we can tempt some of the moths out of hiding. Moth powders and spider silk will make our people rich. Human agriculture and husbandry will allow us to support a much higher population of spiders than could ever survive in the wild.

Some day Anon. Some day.

Best we can do is just support the nearby village and make it turn out well with multi-racial cooperation for that end, then.
>>
>>34775431
Make sure to use the Multi-Weaved Strong Silk when making the undershirt. This ensures that even if someone manages to hit one of the gaps in our armor they still have to cut through a KevlarX10 strong fabric.

Easily knife and even bullet-proof(Small arms fire only). As long as it's not some fancy enchanted supersharp blade it'll leave us bruised rather than bleeding. (This assumes our silk has the same tensile strength as that of a Black Widow.)

Sure it'll take more silk but we have a full tank anyway thanks to the meal at the inn.

Yeah, I know it's one of the strongest materials, but it's strongest in tensile strength.
I don't know how well at all that translates to shearing stressors.
I mean, I know you can catch arrows with silk, but you do that by making it billow so the silk around the cut pulls the arrow. The arrows go through the silk normally.

Let's just say I prefer the spider silk to linen, but don't trust it.

You wander through the village, following sound of the smith's hammer. As you draw up outside the forge, a thought crosses your mind.

OH GOD I HAVEN'T MADE THE SHIRT YET OH GOD

You freeze, eyes wide in the street. Okay. Okay, no, this isn't bad yet. He's still hammering. So he's still working on the armour. You've got time! Unless he's working on something else? What if someone needed an axe, or a shovel? What if he's been waiting but you were just eating and walking around and- No. Calm down. Everything is fine.

You wait till your breathing evens out, then seat yourself next to the doorway, gently lowering your spider half so as to not disturb your passenger. Alright. You want an undercoat. Heavy weave, half sleeves. This sort of thing is easy- you're not trying to create harpy friendly pockets.

You start laying out a thick-woven sheet of material, holding it up to yourself to check the length every so often- and when you're satisfied with that, you double it. Shirts have two sides, Lyra. You map out a pattern in your head, leaving a bit of room for growth, and making sure the sleeves won't be too tight.
>>

>17 threads and not an archive link in sight
>>

Your fingers slice easily through the material, carving out something resembling a doublet- You swipe the front open, using loops of silk and knots for ties to do it up. Sewing the pieces together is slow going- Using your fingers as amateur needles is a lot harder that using them to shred wolves. Gradually, the shirt takes shape in your hands; a slowly growing piece of clothing.

Shadows fall over your work, and you look up to find yourself ringed by a small crowd of children- They've probably been there a while. The shadows are coming from the fence next to you, the downy harpy children perched above for a better view. You smile, turning your attention back to your work.

"Good afternoon, Little ones."
"Hello" "Hi" "Yes" "Okay"
"What are you up to today, yes?"
The kids look at one another sideways, before one of the girls speaks up.
"Mom was sweeping and she said I was in the way, so I got sent outside."
The harpies nod at each other.
"Papa is hunting, yes? We cannot fly yet."

The rest chime in with similar stories- busy adults and messy children. You share a slow smile with them.
"You can sit and watch, if you like. I am making an undershirt, yes."
"What's it under?"
"Armour."
"Are you an adventurer? Adventurers wear armour?"

You give it some thought.
"Of a sort, yes. At the least, I get into all sorts of trouble."
"Does your Mom kick you out when she's cleaning, too?"

You laugh out loud, almost missing your next thread.
"She sent me to get armour- If I am to find trouble, at least I should be prepared."
"Tell us!" "Yeah, yeah, cmon!"
The kids crowd in front of you, grabbing at your legs and begging a story.
"Sit down then, whelplings. There we are. So- At the heart of the forest, deep beneath the stones, an ancient city lies. And within those ruins, a spider walks, taller than trees...."

_________________________________________________________
>>
>>34778041

"And so we carried her from the ruins, yes, to safety and skies above."
The kids are all wide-eyed, enraptured- but before they can chime in with questions, and old, cracking voice interrupts.
"Quite the tale there, little spinner."
His smile is wide, despite the dark circles ringing his eyes.
"Hm. It was a bit scarier in person, I think."
He chuckles, gesturing you up and into the forge. The children scatter as you stand, one girl chasing down the boys with a stick while the herpies hop after them.

Inside is just as oppressive as yesterday. The heat hasn't lessened in the least, and you start sweating almost as soon as you step in. The old man holds up a few connected pieces of plate- a beautifully crafted breastplate, two loose pauldrons and unclasped armguards, a half-plate skirt hanging from the front, making a neat V to fit between your legs.

You grin, eyes sparkling as he shuffles forward with your prize.
"It takes a bit of doing, yeah, but I am good at what it is I do. Step back out there, kiddo, and throw the shirt on. We'll get this fit."

Spiders:
Building houses wherever they feel like it since every single goddamn september when I get spider webs in my face.

>>34778415
One or two. It eventually becomes a tradition were outlying towns that suffer from severe monster attacks have a spider-abode to allow an arachne to set up home in exchange for eating the invading monsters.

I dunno how much we'll live here.
I look forward to finding out whether we're going to stay based in the forest, change our base to the village, or stay mobile. And, if we do stay mobile, will we have a mobile base of some sort?

>>34778745
Literally the mountain spider. We can carry around our own legion of harpies

>>
>>34778766
>>34778745
>>34778775
I still don't think that scale of big is on the table. And it sort of shuts out most adventuring options.
>>
>>34778745
Speaking of our party, who are we taking with us? I know Jin is a given, probably Sara too.
>>
>>34778792
We know that, ust let us have our fantasies before they are inevitably crushed by reality.
>>
>>34778809
Whoever of our siblings wants to come. I assume only Sara though. Aria won't want to stay in our shadow like that.
>>
>>34778809
Possibly the moth girl we saved?
>>
>>34778809
Don't forget Aria. Though she's just as likely to form her own adventure party than to follow us. Or she'll constantly be trying to one up us and get eaten by monsters
>>
>>34778809
Rotating caste of members that switches out upon visits to town as they each have to go off on their own offscreen adventures occasionally.
>>
>>34778809
we'll swap out as we visit town. And 4chan eats my messages.
>>
>>34778832
I can picture Aria becoming a rival adventurer.

Elle will probably settle down and become a housespider. Maybe settle in town and trade silk.

The brothers seem to live for the thrill of the hunt. They'll probably move into the deeper woods.

Sara's got the thirst for knowledge and loves us. I bet she'd beg us to go travelling with her if we don't offer first.
>>
>>34778901
if there's an arena somewhere (that has some 2v2 fights) the brothers are going to love it, i bet
>>
>>34778901
You say that like she wouldn't just be coming along [for the magics and stuff. I pretty sure her love of big books will play a bigger role in Sara's eventual decision.

Also, no one's said anything about mom's reaction to all of this.

You stand straight and still, arms out. The old man circles you, snapping bits into place, pulling straps taught here and there, questioning if it's too tight or not. Jin sleeps.

The chestplate goes first- Interlocked bands and plates, held together by a leather vest, neatly coating your torso in mirror polished steel. Mikhael comments as he works.
"There's a neckguard in the bag fer after- Yer mother skipped out on it before. Said she couldn't bloody well bite people while she was wearing it."
He snorts.
"Dunno wha' sort of person goes about biting people in the middle of a sword fight."
"The kind with poisonous fangs."

He snorts, a full body jerk pulling a strap too tight. It takes him a moment to loosen it, chuckling.
"Bloody smart ass spider. Armour 'r not, you'll be getting yourself into all sorts of trouble."
"Sometimes it comes looking for me, yes."
"Oh, aye, I believe that."
You snort.

Armguards wrap down to your elbows, neatly meeting your chitinous gloves, clipping together. He wraps his knuckles against one as he moves around you to fit the second. Satisfied with each one, he places a pauldron atop one shoulder, winding the straps into the leather jacket beneath the armour. Each side connects, and he makes you rotate your shoulder to ensure a proper range of movement beneath the protection.

He steps back at last, holding up a perfectly polished buckler, and you examine your reflection.

You look fierce. Noble. Knightly, even. You twist, doing your best to examine the armour from each angle before he passes you the shield, pointing out the straps and how to use it.

And finally, the fit meeting his exacting standards, he orders you to take it all off again. The rattle of plates rouses Jin for a few moments- She raises her head from your blanket-nest and blinks around at the situation- but she decides it really isn't all that important, and cuddles back down to sleep.
>>

>You say that like she wouldn't just be coming along for the magics and stuff.
Yeah, like I said, she's got the thirst for knowledge.
Her reaction when we provided her something new to study was intense. No way the few books Dad left will be enough to satisfy her. She'll want to go out and discover more magic.

I bet she'll ask us if we don't ask her first.

>no one's said anything about mom's reaction to all of this.
Well, she knows we'll all leave the nest fairly soon, we have to or we'll over hunt the area.
She's said herself, she won't be hypocritical enough to complain about us adventuring. She just want's us to be well prepared before we go.
>>
>>34779104
Her own mother tracked her down constantly though. I wonder if something like that will happen to us
>>
>>34779040
The smith shakes his head wryly as he packs the armour into a wide bag, and you make your move.
"So-"
"Hm?"
"How does one take care of armour, yes?"
He shrugs as he works.

"'S easy enough, kid. Scrub it to keep it clean, polish it to keep it shiny. You can smear it with ashes and the like to dull the sheen if you plan on sneaking about, too. Wirebrush'll get out anything scrubbing won't. A bit of oil every once inna while ta keep the leather from cracking. Basic stuff'll see you through."

"That's it?"
"Ha! It only sounds simple, yeah? It's work, kid. No shortcuts."
"Hmm. Shortcuts are never really worth taking."
He gives you the first genuine smile you've seen him wear.
"Keep that in yer heart kid. Or yer shell. Where ever you keep the important bits. Anything worth doing is worth doing right."

He slaps a heavy, calloused hand on your shoulder.
"Take care, alright? Tell yer idiot mother to stop by, and we can catch up over drinks. It ain't fair she goes halfway around the world, and we don't even get a story to show for it."
"I'll let her know, yes."
"You do that. I'm gonna go give these old bones their rest, then. Blessings take you, whelp."
"You too."

You wander down the road, lightly clanking package in hand. The sun is overhead, the birds are singing. You can hear the whisper of the river, the screams of children playing on the wind. The town is peaceful. Beautiful. You could probably build a nest around that tree... No, that wouldn't work. Your tree has coverage. A hollowed trunk. Maybe a house would be better?

You head towards Jin's cottage as you think. Two, maybe three floors. Maybe an open face- or a wide central pillar to clamber around? There'd have to be stairs or ladders for dad, then. Your thoughts remain on architecture for people with giant spider bodies as your feet lead you back to the edge of the village...

I honestly have no idea how giant spiders would work. We'll say they take in air through the carapace, but it works like a valve, or something, so they won't drown. Subconcious control over their shell lungs.
We'll work it out.

It's probably going to end up with magic.

You picked up 'yes' from mom. Forest language sentence structure tends to end with confirmations. That you and your siblings don't use it more than you do is because you were human- and they've picked up on your speech patterns.

Apparently Spiders are capable of holding their breath for up to 72 hours...

Another thing to consider, is do we have redundant organs in our human body, or are the organs split between the two parts allowing for either larger organs or secondary/new organs?

If memory serves, a similar discussion was had in that other monstergirl quest... can't remember it's name, but it has a scorpion-girl as the protag... I believe they went with the monster half had it's own organs with the air taken in from between the legs or something, while the human half had it's own organs which served to boost the various functions to the human half as the monster half was just lacking the capacity to fully supply the extra bodily area that the human half gives over the standard monster...

Food for Thought...
