"Give me one reason I shouldn't turn both of you into little balls and hang you from the trees." The snake lady's long, serpent tail continues to whip and splash at the water.

You've come to the conclusion that you may not be a fan of scales.

You are Jack Albator, spirited adventurer, endearing high-roller, and now venturing botanist. You've come to this forsaken marsh to collect a certain kind of mushroom to quell the raging fever of Gallete's illed hero. After collecting a single mushroom, you quickly realize that it seems to grow exclusively on the back of a creature that has a snippy lady for a top part and a snake for a bottom part.

You would consider the possibility of a little situation-disarming tail pets, but this tail looks like it's covered in moss and other kinds of swamp fungus. Even you have standards when it comes to this sort of thing.

"Forgive me, slithery Lass of the marsh. I have a very sick, ailing friend."
"Oh? Let me cry tears for you."

Okay, trying again.
"Yes, VERY sick, and she's contagious, AND the people around her could already be sick. So it's of the utmost importance of-"
"Save it, I already know why you're here then. You're after a red mushroom with an arrow pattern across the top of it."
She points to some of the fungi that has sprouted on her tail, "Like these."

You eye her suspiciously, could she be psychic? It wouldn't be entirely out of the 'ordinary' for what you're used to.
Reaching into your pocket, you take out the picture the apothecary in town gave you to compare mushrooms with. You turn it to her, so she can get a closer look.

The snake lady waves her claws away idly, "I already know what it looks like, I drew that picture you're holding. You got it from a brown book in the apothecary's office with hundreds of pictures of other flowers and fauna."

Now you're really confused, you turn to look at Camille, but she only has the most shocked expression that you've ever seen her have on her face. Which is a shame, because you were hoping she would pick up the slack and ask the relevant questions to the nice snake lady.

A small slither leaves her breath in a sigh,
"If you're here because the person has a fever, then you're going about it all wrong. That mushroom only numbs the effect the fever has on the person. It's good for the young who can get over illness, but if your friend is as sick as you say, you need something to fight the cause."

>"How do you know this? If you know all this, why do you live in a swamp?"
>"Wait, so, you're like a doctor? Come on! I have a patient who needs an exam!"
>"Can you help me find something to fight the cause?"

"Ye know about this stuff?"
"That's right."
"Then, can ye help us find it?"

She sighs, before scratching her claws together. "I could, but my rates aren't cheap."
"That's great! Neither are mine!" you shine a mischevious smile at Camille.

Camille perks up at that and manages to choke out a sentence,
"Hold it, if you really are a genius of medicine, why are you living in a marsh?"

That seems to hit a soft spot with the serpent girl. She slowly slinks back down into the water to where only the top of her head is visible.
Across her face, is a beet-red blush.

She shakes her head and explodes back out of the water with her teeth clenched, and her face distorted into a scowl.
"THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. Why should I even help you two? You come here, hit me with a stick, and now demand my services?" The mushrooms on her tail sway as she thrashes the entire lower half of her body around.
Camille puts on the puppy-dog eyes, ones you've never knew she had.
"Pleeease? This isn't an ordinary patient. This is THE hero of Gallete. The one in the service of the princess herself!"

"Wait."
The scalegal ponders this for a second,
"This is the castle that needs help? They need help doing what their money, riches, mages, and knights couldn't?"
"Yes! None of them could do it, you-"
Camille visibly wretches, the next few words are very difficult for her to choke out.
"-you're the only one who can help us now." She forces her face to stay stoic and composed, but it only results in the vivid disgust with herself vying for control in a very entertaining dance of facial expressions.

The reptile lass coughs into her hand, "I'll help this one time because of the severity of your case, but you both, and especially the castle, owe me."

You're happy enough with this arrangement, even if you can't really speak for Gallete as you're not even their hero.
"Sounds like we have a deal, so where do we start first?"

An hour passes of rummaging through the reeds along the bank of the lake, as well as under various trees and inside moist bushes. Camille seems to think that it's a giant waste of time, and is very clearly not putting her all into the effort.

You grab another petal of a large, yellow flower drifting in the reeds. The serpent girl claims that you need enough petals to make several days worth of tea. Even if you already have an entire sack of the blasted yellow danties.

"You're still going to need more than that, it takes a whole flower to make even one small cup of tea." The buxom reptile replies.
Yellow flowers to make tea with, and tiny brown mushrooms gathered from a swamp. You're not sure how to feel about this anymore.

"Now, you're going to need someone to cut these mushrooms for you, so you need to take it to the alchemist in your castle an-"
"Err. I don't think the castle has an alchemist."
"..Seriously? Who was treating the girl?"
"I waaas!" Camille says, raising her hand.

"That- Ugh." she grips one of her clawed hands to her face. "And I know that bubblehead in the shop can't do it. Maybe I shou-"
"'That bubblehead in the shop'?-" Camille says, her ears twitch as she says that.

The elongated lass interrupts her, "S-So! Any more symptoms your friend was having? We got something for the high fever and the sweating, do you know any more about this disease?"

Okay, here we go, hours of reading medical books finally being put to use:

>"She's breathing a poisonous miasma that needs to be quelled."
>"Her humors are imbalanced, causing her to be unable to balance water and allow her to digest food."
>"She has tiny insects on her skin, which is eating at her and crushing her appetite."

"She breathing a poisonous miasma! Every breath she takes-"
"You didn't treat her, did you?" She says, with an unamused look.
"Argh, No. I just set up a quarantine until-"
She sighs, "Anything that she's doing that you can see?"
You feel yourself slipping into a somber voice, "In my world, we called this the 'Sweating Sickness'. It causes the skin to become flush red, the head to burn like the fires of hell, and near the end, the tongue starts to swell."

She considers this for a few minutes, before turning back into the reeds, she comes back out with a yellow-colored mushroom.

"Good enough, you're in charge then. I'll show you how to cut these mushrooms, but you have to be-"
"Lass, the only food I cut in my life has been potatoes. Lots and lots of potatoes."

She looks confused, if not a little irritated.
"I don't know what you expect me to do-"
"Why don't you come with us?" Camille says, with happy cheer.

Again, the snake girl splashes into the water with a blush.
"ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
"How come?"
"None of your business!"

You sigh, "I don't see how you expect to receive yer compensation if you don't tag along."
She slowly rises out of the water, and raises her tail to reveal the rows of mushrooms along her scales.

"Look at me."
"Hmm?"
"LOOK AT ME!"

Her tail rises out of the water some more, revealing even MORE varieties of mushroom and fungus that have overtaken her scale.s

"Do you think I can go ANYWHERE like THIS?!"
"You mean, those aren't intentional?"
"NO!" Her face is really red, now.

Clearing her voice and calming down, she explains,
"The apothecary in town didn't use to be the apothecary, it used to be a potion shop, the only potion shop in all of Gallete. And I was the one who made it. But-"
She takes her tail into her hand, scratching off a light film of fungus with her claws.

"I can't bathe like you smoothskins do. The water doesn't get under my scales. So years of grinding and cutting mushrooms left spores inside of them that I couldn't get out. I tried to ignore it at first, but then this happened." She waves her tail for effect, before gently setting it back into the lake.

"It was humiliating, rumors spread in town about the potion lady catching some kind of deadly disease because of her stuff. They were pouring my potions out onto the streets because they thought they contained 'evil spirits' or something like that. I left the whole shop to a random person along with a big book detailing all the fauna in the area. Which is why I'm here, in a swamp, and why I'm not leaving."

Camille doesn't see the problem, "Why don't you just pull them out?"
"BECAUSE IT RIPS OUT MY SKIN! They're rooted in my skin!" she emits a frustrated growl.

"Besides, do you think the castle would let me anywhere near them like this? I look like a plague victim! They won't just let some slimy rake from the marsh go visit their princess and hero."

>"Oh come on! You said you would make special exception. They're not that bad to look at!"

It's pretty common knowledge. I mean, when was the last time you saw any kind of fungi growing in warm, dry, sunny spot. Folk knowledge of skin infections like warts is prevalent and Jack has already displayed such functional knowledge. It's been known for god only knows how long that gangrene and footrot will have a difficult time spreading across skin that is often aired out dried, as opposed to contained in a damp, cool environment.

>50 Ways to Touch by Jack Albator

>>34761774
No, that usually just spread the contaminants. Best way to go about it is to cut down the mushrooms as close to the skin as possible, then expose the affected area. Then get her to sunbathe a bit like a good snake would. The more dehydrated it gets the faster the spores will die. Once this has gone on for a while apply some kind of fungicidal disinfectant. Soapy water will do but something stronger would be preferable, ideally something that won't damage her own flesh and skin. See if we can't somehow induce shedding on her and repeat.

Or, alternatively, just convince her leave the mushrooms to grow. That will give us a walking (sorry, slithering) herb garden of medicinal and possibly even magic shrooms in the form of a curvy lamia lady, fuck yea.

You can see the tears slowly welling in her eyes. Despite the fact that she has slits for pupils, she does have a very pretty pair of golden yellow eyes.
"Lass."
You walk up and put your hand on her shoulders

"I've seen plague victims. I've KNOWN plague victims."
She slowly looks away from her fungus-ridden tail. You put your other hand on her shoulder.
"You don't look much the like."

Her cheeks are flushed, her breathing becomes short and panicked.
You reach up to her face, brushing away some of the moist bangs that have fallen into her sullen face. Her gaze turns upward to meet yours, and her golden eyes manage to find yours.
"I put my trust in you, I want you to know that you can do the same for me."
"(ghhk pffft, Hehah)"

You take a hand off her shoulder and grab a hold of her loose tail, which has furrowed up against her body in a defensive stance. The rough surface is covered in a thin layer of water, which dance against the tip of her tail as you gently caress it.

"Kind Lass, what's your name?"
"..Madeleine."
"Madeleine, we need your talent and experience in order to save the life of not just Gallete's hero, but maybe every person who lives in this land. Can you put your trust in us, like we have in you?"

"(SHNRK, hehehaHAH, PFFFFT)"

"..I'll do it.. What is your name, handsome traveler?"
"Jack Albator, but you can simply call me Jack. It's what friends are for."

"(heh..heheh)"

You and Madeleine turn around, immediately noticing a very guilty Camille with a huge grin plastered over face.
"What's so funny, Lass?"
"Nothing!"

You load up the bird as best as you can with Madeleine. Camille and You walk so she can ride comfortably. Slowly, you start making your way out of the swamp, with herbs and medicine in tow.

You look up onto the bird to see how your passenger is doing. Madeleine has already coiled up over the bird's saddle and fallen fast asleep. The marsh probably doesn't act as a very comfortable bed, you reckon.

"What's the matter, didja want one too, Lass?" You flash her a cheesy grin.
She nervously laughs it off, which you take as a sign of being caught flat footed, or a sign of jealously.
Either ways, they're all girl problems that you have no business being associated with at all. Well, at least until you're done teasing Camille for all the joke is worth.

The rest of the trip is uneventful back to the castle. Despite the stares and whispers of passing by travelers. You're glad they had the brains to not say anything to you, because kicking their asses would probably wake Madeleine.

Now comes the part where she may need to be awake for, the Castle.
The bridge draws into sight, lots of guards are busy doing their noon shift changes. Which surprises you, because you didn't think you were out that long. Aligot must be really bored playing Door guard duty to the patient by now.

Announcer, snakes shed, just saying. So we should probably be able to help Madeline.
>>
>>34763126
Even if not, she can have a place on that fancy new airship. It's got to be more interesting than some shitty swamp.
>>
You don't need to make excuses for yourself. You don't even think she needs to make excuses for herself.
As far as you're concerned, if anyone has a problem with her, then they can vent their complaints at you. Your pistol has been feeling rather itchy as of late, anyway.

The guards immediately start whispering and chatting as your party approaches. Some of them run into the castle, others pretend to stand guard. One of them approaches.

"Excuse me! Where do you guys think you're going?"
"Where does it look like Lad? You're looking at one of the best doctors in the land."

"Wait, is this about the sick patient? Or is this girl the sick patient?"
"Does it matter? I'm going in." You push right past him.
"W-Wait! She needs a string! Her evil spirits could burst forth at any minute!"

You rub at his head HARD as you walk by him, catching him off guard and causing him to tumble backwards onto the bridge.

Ahead, several guards come out, but immediately stand down and line the edge of the bridge.

Behind them, walking out in full armor, is Antonin.
"Jack."
"Ah, Antonin, here to escort us to the patient?"
"No, Jack."

You stop, the bird coming to a sudden halt awakens Madeleine.

"Jack, do you have the herbs?"
"Har! And a specialist who knows how to use them!"
"Great, hand the herbs over."

Wait, what?

"What do you mean?"
"Hand the herbs over, we'll take care of the rest. The kingdom of Gallete thanks you for your assistance."

Oh, dear. We're going to have to murder our way up to the room.

It a conspiracy!

Son I will keelhaul your ass for this.

But seriously get Camille to back us up. Her word carries for more weight than ours around here.

Now you're really confused.
"Antonin, why are you here?"
"Because, this whole thing is a matter of national pride for Gallete. We're thankful of your help so far in organizing the recovery effort. But- I think we can handle it from here. We know how to prepare ingredients."

You're not amused by this stalling,
"Antonin, the longer we stand here and chat, the worse off your hero becomes."
"Which is the other reason I'm here."

He points toward Madeleine, or more importantly, the fungi growing across her back.

"I'm here because apparently your answer to going and finding the herbs was to bring another sick patient to the castle. If you think we're a church that does charity, then our hospitality has been mistaken for something that it is not. I think your 'specialist' should work on cleansing her own demons before she tries working on someone else's."

OOh! You know why he's here now!

He's here to get his medicine!

Your finger traces over the pistol you have strapped to your waist. Oh yes, he needs his medicine all right. You're thinking that you should give it to him, if he wants it so badly.

"Camille, Take the bird and Madeleine to the stables. I have to fill this lad's prescription."

Oh no! Our dashing rogue finds himself face to face with danger and suspense!

Will Jack make his way past Antonin? Can he save Gallete's hero in time? Is anyone ever going to learn that it's a terrible idea to go 1v1 against a hero?

Till next time,
Thanks for reading, everyone!

Let me know what you thought of today's thread.

You didn't fill the quota of touching/molesting ears and tails.
>>
>>34763342
This castle is going to be filled with them little furball cats at this rate
>>

Also, stay tuned for an announcement after I get this archived.

It's great! now I have to go and fantasize on what's going to happen next.

Needs more tail rubs. And if you take it this direction, I hope we don't get of completely Scot free. That would be weird.

I say we pick him up by the tail and just hurl him over the castle walls.

>I say we pick him up by the tail
>by the tail
Nignog you just went full animal abuse.

Never manhandle a cat by their tail, that's probably a major crime or something in this country. I mean storming the castle is one thing, considering we'll be vindicated when our methods produce results, but hurling a catman by his tail might actually result in charges that stick.
>>
>>34763461
We will invent the catapult.
>>
>>34763508
Ok how about touchingthe ears and tail?
>>
>>34763384
Man we're a pirate, we don't give a fuck. There isn't a single knight, mage, or fluffy tale in this lad that can overpower us. We're going to heal this kid with our scaly potion mixer and there isn't a single bleedin' thing they can do to stop us.
>>
>>34763538
Not saying they could. But I expect them to be mildly ticked off at the very least. Seeing as how we're dragging a "possessed" person through their castle.
>>
>>34763538
Can't tell if we are the good guys or the bad guys.
>>
>>34763508
Dude these aren't animals, these are people. People whose greed and gloryhounding are putting thousands of innocent people at risk. We need to do a little arm twisting to get through to people, it would be in character for Jack to go for their weak point. Maybe not hard enough to break anything but still.
>>
So beach episode to cure scalelass's tail when?
>>
>>34763565
Well that's their bad. Even if spooky disease ghosts are actually a thing, she's clearly just got a lamia-sized case of athlete's foot. Wibbly wobbly fancy pantsy healing magic is no excuse for not being able to recognize a perfectly mundane mushroom when you see one.

>>34763575
We're the get shit done guys.

>>34763580
We can just shoot him with our gun, it's not like he has any hope of beating us 1v1 to begin with. Going for the tail would be like a Blackbelt getting in a fight with a drunk guy and going for the nuts just because he can.

Okay, now for that announcement.

I never want to bring my RL problems into a thread, not unless they directly affect runtimes or that sort of thing. Even then, I just say "I have RL problems" and leave it at that.

That said

I may be in line for a series of interviews later in the next month or so, and with those interviews come weeks where I'll be away from home and my computer. In places where I can only hope hotels and coffee shops have internet. I'm not really one for running 6+ hour games in the lobby of hotels or in the bar of coffee shops. I'm sure you can see where that may affect my runtimes or at least severely mess up my sleep cycle to where the runtimes would be different.

That said, nothing is lined up yet or set in stone. So it could be nothing happens at all. I figured you all should know this ahead of time, at least a week or two a head of time just in case I get the call say, tomorrow (not likely but I can dream).

This also brings me to part 2 of the announcement. Which is a bit of a confession.

Pirate.

Get Camille to do her hocus pocus quackery then, but don't spend to much time humoring their ignorance. Nobody seems to realize they have pandora's box sitting in this castle and one stroke of bad luck well bring death on an unprecedented scale here.
Oh and btw, she's not possessed, she just looks infected. Worth pointing out that those mushrooms are all medicinal in nature. We reaally ought to get Camille to back us up on this, might save us the trouble of starting a techincal invasion of Gallete.
>>
>>34763637
>Which is a bit of a confession.
Please don't say you hate running the threads.

Just post on your twitter that you won't be running.

And good luck with the interviews.

This gap in my ability to run may not just affect one quest, but two. I didn't mention this before, because Dog Days Quest was a kind of writing experiment of how well I could do quirky + crazy and I really didn't know how it would turn out. But there is another quest I run. I've decided before anything happened regarding one or the other, especially if runtime is concerned, I should let all my players know now.

That other quest is named "Card Priestess Masami". And the alias I use running it is "Heart of the Cards". I don't expect anyone to read it, the overlap between the subject material is really, really low if not nonexistent. And the general atmosphere is diametrically opposed to fun fluffy tail antics. As a brief explanation: Dog Days Quest started when I tried to do absolutely every decision as a QM completely the opposite as the decisions I made previously as a newbie QM. Which resulted in a fun quest about chasing the fluffy tail instead of what that other quest is today, which is a magical girl lite quest.

That said, I wanted to be sure all my players, even the few that still play my other quest, are aware of my potential schedule breakdown over the next month. I'll make the same announcement tomorrow to them so we're all on the same page and be sure to announce it on twitter. Again, I thank all of you for sticking with these fun little writing exercises I've done for myself over the past few months. It's a far more productive and relaxing hobby for me than anything else I've ever done. Just knowing that the silly stories I make are still fun and other people are enjoying them make it all worthwhile for me.

So again, I thank you for your patience and for your support. I hope we get to keep chasing the fluffy tail for months to come.

Traditionally, the phrase
>I have a confession
does not lead to happy revelations.

Good to know that you're sticking with us, though.
>>
>>34763747
Will yeah good luck with the interviews and thanks for running again.
I you ring if you want one.
>>
>>34763712
Oh wow, really? I followed that quest for a few threads, then fell behind and haven't gotten around to reading the archives.

Anyway, life comes first, Announcer/HotC. Just let us know when things happen, and we can wait.
>>
>>34763761
Yeah you made me fearful for a second.
>>
>>34763795
Glad to hear it

>>34763789
Careful, I might take you up on that offer.

>>34763814
>>34763785
Yeah, not my smartest decision to cut it in half there. It was just 400 characters too long to fit into one post. Whoops!

Anyway, I'll be posting the whole announcement on both twitter accounts shortly. Thank you everyone for your understanding. If something happens regarding my quests, you'll be the first to know about it. That's my promise to you
>>
Also as another update, I have the structure for a pastebin about 50% done. Here's to hoping between tomorrow and Thursday I can get one up before next thread so we can all keep track of the fluffy tailed varmits.
>>
>>34763712
Oh. Well that's alright then. Had me worried there Announcer.
Thanks for the heads up, always nice to know what's going on. Understand how life tends to eat into your free time. It's honestly pretty damned impressive that you've kept posting this consistently while running two quests simultaneously.
Anyways best of luck with your interview man, hope it works out for you. Look forward to when you'll be able to update regularly again, I really get a kick outta this quest of yours.
>>
>>34763761
Well "I have a confession" usually leads into bad things, like, "you should get yourself checked", "I secretly hate you", or the dreaded "your QM was actually ME, EGO!

As confessions go it was really more along the lines of fun trivia.
>>
>>34763877
>>34763845
I'll keep that in mind if I happen to have any other "confessions"!

To me it seemed like a big deal in my head, but molehills always seem like mountains until you cross them.
