Part 6

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, and you have been charged with bringing a message to Queen Melisende of Jerusalem by the Lady Lucca of Genoa. This message you will recieve by 'some one known to you' before you arrive in Jerusalem. It is vitally important it is delivered before the beginning of Easter. You have a time frame of a month and a half to get it done.

Currently you are on the road to Tyre. You and all your men are a-horse, with you sharing your saddle with your slave Chihirizahd. You have kept a steady pass mostly passed in silence, with only some conversation passed between you and your men.

The path you've taken will lead you through the spot you were ambushed from a month ago, when you were escorting the Lady Jehanne to her wedding.

> send someone to scout it (nominate)
> ignore the danger and stay as a group

(minor correction to the last thread. It was said that Lord Gerard's twin brother William is the Prince of Galilee. This was an error. William of Bures is the Prince of Galilee. William Grenier is the Lord of Caesarea. Both named William, it was a simple mistake.)

(I have now added companion equipment to the character sheet)

Us and Solomon

Just send Solomon.
>>
Send Franz, he's the huntsman
>>
"Hey, Sol!" you ride up beside the large warrior astride his heavy chested war horse. The man shoots you a grin, lazily turning his spear tip over end in his right hand.

"I need you to scout ahead," you say, gesturing to your own spear.

"Ambush country," Solomon replied, "All of Jerusalem seems to be good for it."

He spurred his horse into a gallop, flying the yards before you.

The rest of your party ride up to find he has flushed the place out.

"Some peasants with more weapons than sense ran that way," he said, pointing off to the rocky yards. You could just make out the form of young men scrabbling over the rocks in fear. Five in all.

You remember the last pair that had tried to ambush you. That the numbers on this road had swelled was bad news.

>>
You watch the would-be-bandits disappear into the hard rock formations, content to let them go. The terrain was too rough for easy cavalry strikes, and you were on a bit of a deadline besides.

You motion your horse back into a trot.

The days pass and you come into the city of Tyre. The port town is busy with activity, the jostling bustle of a harbour busy with sailors, merchants and pilgrims. Nothing next to the packed crowds of Sidon or Acre, still it was busier than you had last seen it. A troop of Templars were in evidence, herding a group of pilgrims on foot and horseback, their impressive white tabards with the red crusaders cross over the heart standing out in the filth and the muck of the city.

It's here the Orlando ventures an offer.

"We could take ship down to Jaffa, and shave weeks off our journey," he said, "It's a shorter ride by far from Jaffa to Jerusalem than to go by land all the way."

Solomon visibly queses. "I have no love for ship travel," he said, "An honest horse and a swift pace. It may be slower, but it will be surer. There are Egyptian reavers on the sea besides, or pirates from Sicily and Cyprus."

"As opposed to the bandits and marauders inland," Orlando snipped back, "No path is free from danger altogether, but ship travel is faster. If we really must be in Jerusalem quickly, it is the best option."

> listen to Orlando and arrange a ship

Our horses drown.
>>
"I'll talk to a captain, negotiate price," you say, "But if the asking price is too steep we may have to hoof it."

It's a reasonable enough compromise, and it mollifies some of Solomon's unease.

There is no shortage of ships heading south this time of year, with winter past and the trade seasons starting in earnest. You find one captain, a Cypriot, drinking in a port side house. He's a sober looking man with close cropped beard and dark eyes.

"Yes, we'll be heading down Jaffa way. With cargo and pilgrims both. There's space enough for a dozen or so more," he said, "But be sure to know the passage is not easy. Egyptian bastards come up and cause a havoc if they think they can get away with it. We'll be cutting closer to shore this season, storms are passed and it should be safe, and the bastards don't like getting too close to the coast. But I can't promise anything."

He finished a drink.

"If you're a company of swords, I'll not reject you, but as for price..."

"You have to see, there is a risk as well in taking on board warriors such as yourselves," the captain said, reclining in his chair, "you could take us and our cargo in the night, take my ship and set yourselves up as pirates. I don't know you, so I'll need something as a vouch of trust." He drummed his fingers on the table top.

"I'd say fifteen pfennings," he said, "If only for porting your horses. It'll be a four day trip, less than half of what it would be on land, and we're not stopping in Acre to take on more goods or sell off. That's a fine deal, if I say so myself. You'll not get better."

Fifteen pfennings. Your money was running low after purchasing those horses. Was it really worth it?

> take the offer

We're landsmen, and if we do get attacked by pirates, we'd get screwed over by the seasickness.

Case in point, our dear brother Hugo was green when we first set foot on the Holy land. Let's leg it lads, because knights ride, not sail.
>>
>>34708874
Will have to agree with that. Lets just hope that there is less bandits on the road
>>
While the offer was not a bad one, and the captain's doubts reasonable, his asking price was outside your range and you politely turn him down. He tips his cap to you and bids you a good day.

You'd be taking the coastal road down to Acre, after that Haita, and beyond that Caesarea. After Caesarea it was Arsur and then finally Jaffa, from which there was good and easy travel to Jerusalem.

Still, the coastal road was not without danger. Bandits and worse, raiders out of the stronghold of Ascalon ranging far afield and causing what havoc they could.

Still, you were on a deadline, and set off that afternoon after collecting supplies for the road.

It was only a day and a part of travel to Acre. In this time you have a chance to socialise with one of your companions.

"Sol," you draw your friend to ride with you. Chihirizahd is sleeping in the saddle, curled against your chest.

"Wil," he said.

"How did your little adventure go?" you asked, pointing to the horses.

Solomon pressed his lips together. "Hmm, it was not so wild as that. Some brat tried to steal my horse, but your squire gave him a thrashing. And then that brat's brothers tried to thrash your brother and I had to step in. No real harm done, but some excitement."

"And how is your horse?" you ask.

He grins and rears the horse up. "Fit and healthy, what good care they showed him."

"It's good we've gone on land," he said, "The sea is an unpredictable bitch. Better good, solid earth. The earth is trustworthy and unchanging. And think of what we might find on it. Ah, there are no women in the sea."

He twirls his spear and whistles. "Oh it was good to have a woman again, wet and willing, perhaps when this is done we shall return to that village and I'll have her again."

The day passes and soon enough you are in Acre. Men-at-arms were in stark evidence, and knightly orders both famous and obscure were about. You spot the Leper Knights on their way out, all burnished chivalry with tabards flowing.

And Templars too, though they seemed more stationary.

One in particular is glaring in your direction in a way you don't like. A broad little templar serjeant with a spear over his shoulder, deep in the company of his fellows.

You decide to put the little man out of your mind, but as you move through the crowd you notice he and his fellows are following you.

"Oi!" he yells in a high English accent, "Oi! Moor-fucker!" He is clearly yelling at you, and its drawing the attention of the crowd. "Hey you, sodomite, Muslim!" He scoops something off the street and hefts in his hand.

You laugh at his claims and continue into the crowd. He lobs the scooped up horse turd (you hope it is horse at least) but it misses you and splatters across a high born lady's bosom. A shocked gasp elicits from the crowd and her knightly companions draw swords forth.

"You dare assault the Lady Domfront?" they begin after the man, who with a panicked yelp ducks back into the company of his fellows and beats a hasty retreat.

Orlando sidles up beside you. "My favourite thing about you sir, is your ability to make friends," he says with some dryness.

With the Templars off your heels, you are in need of lodging for the night.

You seek out accomodation that suits you, but is not so gaudy it would bankrupt you. It's no hard task in a city as large as Acre. A Frank house that has many belligerent drunks downing pots inside, with a rowdy wrestling match far in the back, jeering and cheering drowning out most conversation as two men made every effort to beat the other into submission.

The house is run by a man and a woman, husband and wife, but as the squat frog of a wife explains, her husband was off visiting a shrine to Mary in Galilee and wasn't expected back until Easter. A prayer for their daughter, who was gripped with illness.

"Ah," she says, "But for a rough looking band such as yourselves, no charge if you'll perform some service. It's a rough night tonight."

You negotiate an arrangement. You and your slave would enrertain the crowd, while your men provided security. Already Solomon was hauling out on rabid drunk and depositing him out the door.

The lady struck the palm of your hand.

"With five pfennings and a free drink each in the bargain," she said with an apple cheeked grin.

You set up your harp and inform Chihirizahd of your plan.

"Shall I dance?" she asked, cocking her hips.

The alone was drawing some attention. You nod.

"Then you best play something I can dance to," she said, kissing your cheek.

Solomon and Welf worked together to separate two struggling men, while Hugo just took a seat far from the action and enjoyed his free ale. Orlando looked a little dumb founded, but settled soon enough to watch you perform by the bar.

You strike a clear cord that cuts the room like a knife through ribbon.

You play a song from Brittany, an old Gaelic tune with some lively spirit. It takes Chihirizahd only a moment to find the rhythm and adjust her dancing to the unfamiliar tune, and when she settles in she starts to move.

The men were silent at first at the sight of her gyrations and moving hands, the way she carressed herself as she moved. But the silence soon gave over to cheerful shouts. They hollered at her and threw coins at the stage in delight.

One man tried to pinch at her thigh and she playfully slapped his hand aside, giving the man a wink as she did so. He fell back with a full grin, face and crotch both bursting with delight.

A whistle went up. More men tried to have a pinch of her thighs and buttocks and as she slapped them away she shot you a concerned look.

Soon Welf and Solomon formed a barrier between her and the crowd, their glares enough to stop any more foolishness. Things might have turned nasty, but they staid to listen after Chihirizahd retired for the night. A lost sobbing ballad about the martyrdom of a saint that put them men in their cups.

When you were done for the night Hugo came, having collected all the thrown coins.

"Twenty pfennings, and a fist of useless clipped stuff," he said, passing you the good coin.

You ruffle his head. A good lad.

When you find your room you find Chihirizahd asleep, still covered in the sweat of her dancing.

You strip off for the night, and leave Chihirizahd to sleep. You pull her a little into your arms, and are soon asleep as well.

When morning comes she is dressed and waiting by your bedside. She helps you into your clothes.

"I am sorry for falling asleep master," she said, "It was wrong to sleep before you. I shall do better next time. You do not have to punish me, I will do better."

She helps you buckle your sword about your hips, and when you leave she is a step behind you, head bowed in embarrassment.

Your men are waiting, and with them an older man bearing the crusader's cross, missing an eye and three fingers on one hand. He has a letter in his mangled hand.

"Aye, 'tis the young Frank," he says it as though you had met before.

He offers you the letter.

You decide its best to enjoy the bustling city one last time before stepping off into the wilder parts of the holy land.

There's much to remark on in the streets of Acre. Performers and men in hoods stomping by whipping themselves, the beggars and beggar children pleading for alms in the gutters, the animals being shown off by their owners. Bright birds of far flung origin, little clever monkeys climbing over their owners, proud birds of prey at the wrist. Dogs growling as they stood guard over stalls.

A caged bear went off towards the pits, and a caged leopard as well. Few large beasts like that were common. They'd be set against one another in the baiting pits, with bets placed or set against dogs just for plain amusement.

You note a hospitaller exiting a poor looking quarter, a cloth pressed to his face. He has a kit of surgical instruments.

"Bath more, and clean the shit out of your gutters," he instructed a common woman before him, "cleanliness is the best preventative for disease, followed by prayer. Go to the shrine of St Mark and pray five times, but only after you've cleared the shit out and bathed regularly for a week."

"Bless you sir!" the woman called after him.

"Bloody ignoramuses," you heard him mutter as he stalked past.

You ask around and get some instructions. A pretty young local girl lays out a route for you that is commonly traveled and avoids most disasters, skirting around Haifa and taking a route further inland.

"It is faster too," she said.

You thank her for her time and head out as one.

The road was long and empty for the most part, and as you go along the path the girl had laid out for you, you find it emptying more still. It takes a turn away from the pasture lands and into a high rock formation.

After a couple of days travel your surroundings start to change, the ground grows hard and dry.

You see at a distance three other travelers on the road. A man-at-arms, a nun, and a young woman on a mule.

The man-at-arms has spear in hand, the nun a stout club she was using as a walking stick. They had taken small notice of your party.

Solomon was eyeing the high rocks around you.

"I do not like this place," he said. "Something stirs in the rocks."

"Hugo," you draw your little brother close, "I have a mission for you, possibly dangerous."

"Yes, sir?" he asked. You point to the rocks and he nods, setting off with his quick little horse.

Franz starts a little after the boy. "Is that wise sir?" he asked with a little disaproval in his voice.

"My brother must one day earn his spurs," you say, "Let's start him on that path and not coddle him."

The rest of your band catch up to the pilgrims. The man-at-arms is an aging man in his late forties. The nun a blond woman approaching thirty, a few strands of hair falling out from under her habit. The girl on the mule was likewise blond, and had it long and tied into a pleated tail. She must have been thirteen or fourteen.

"Good morrow!" she said brightly, a wooden crucifix bouncing against her chest as she plodded along on her donkey. She had very wide, trusting blue eyes.

You nod in reply. "Good morrow," you say.

The man-at-arms eyes you suspiciously.

A shout is let up and you see Hugo come crashing down the rocky hillside. Javelins speed past him very suddenly.

"Bandits!" he called, "Bandits!"

Holy hell.

You form your men up in a mounted shield wall, if such a thing can be concieved, and a well flung dart bounced harmlessly off your shield. Hugo was struggling to escape his attackers. A dart found itself jutting from the flank of his horse and it gave off a terrifying scream.

The nun and footman took either side of the girl, readying club and spear respectively, staying close to your protective wall.

A javelin near hits Hugo, and your heart leaps. Dirty men on foot are running fast and catching up, snatching at Hugo with spears.

"Solomon!" you call, unable to keep the fear from your voice. You see a spear point catch on Hugo's gambeson. Solomon bolts forward with spear and sword held high, a Nubian battle cry loosed.

He covers the ground quick and is among the spearmen, killing with each blow, giving Hugo enough time to bolt to your line. He comes behind your wall of horse flesh, panting and pale, a stain of blood forming on his right shoulder where the layers of his gambeson had been cut.

His horse whimpers in pain, the dart stuck strong. It might not kill the horse, but it would slow it.

Solomon is back in your line as more bandits appear on the ridge. A storm of them, maybe a hundred in all. They throw rocks and darts, some javelins, but they do little against your shield and armour, even the tough skin of your horses resist the blows.

When they come for a made charge at your line, you all form up and push them back, spear points goring death blows on unprotected skin.

A champion in their number comes down on horseback, armoured and armed better than his companions. He points and utters what you take to be a challenge in his barbarian tongue.

Welf's axe lashes out, knocking the spear tip far afield and brought his axe back in a reverse swing, clonking the champion hard on the helm. The champion threatened a wobble in the saddle but managed to keep his stirrups. He struck Welf with the rim of his shield, but Welf knocked it aside with his own, and delivered a hard cut to the shoulder that shattered maille rings off in every direction.

The bandit headbutted Welf's mouth, splitting his lip and sending blood gushing down his chin. Welf flung himself from his saddle into the bandit's and tackled him off the horse entirely. They landed in the dirt, a great explosion of dust hiding their desperate grapple. Soon though a loud gurgling cry set out.

You saw Welf kneeling on the man's chest, pinning his spear arm with a knee and working his axe against the man's exposed throat. He near sawed right through it, the man giving panicked screams like a stuck pig as his life burst forth from ripped up tubes.

The screaming seemed to continue even as Welf took the severed head in hand, a last escape of breath from the lungs, wailing out.

The eyes of the head blinked in shock once, twice and then were still forever.

Welf dropped the head, a mad laugh on his lips. The bandits stepped away from the bloody laughing stalk of a man.

"Now! Now! Now!" you call, lowering your spear. Orlando, Solomon, Franz, and even Hugo on his injured little horse, spur forth in a flying v, with you at the tip. Welf is soon back in the saddle and riding with you, swinging axe around and hollering like mad.

The jar in your arm as your spear tip strikes, and then you're already moving past, sliding the tip free in a single motion as a body drops. That's all it is. A bit of shock to the elbow, a slip of the wrist, and on to the next.

They were a flight before your rampage, scurrying back to the security of the rocks, and they were even gone from there as well soon enough, crying out as they threw down spears and ran for their lives, as if the will of haven itself was against them.

The field is cleared. You turn to see Hugo draw his spear from the back of a dead man. He has blood on his face, and though he was pale wore a vicious grin.

"My first," he said, "And five." He wiped sweat from his brow. His first proper battle and five to his name.

As Solomon meant to end a downed bandit, the nun with the club stepped forth.

"You'll not!" she called up at the Nubian, "This man is hurt and no threat. To kill him is murder!"

"Move fool woman," Solomon replied.

She brandished the club. "He is under my care now," she said.

Solomon gives you a funny look and the nun lowers her club. The downed bandit is groaning, clutching his stomach.

"It's just that a gentlewoman would want to care for a wounded man, even a heathen," you say, "but this man is a bandit, and would be hanged anyway."

"Then let him be hanged, but not before!" she said, "I'll not leave any man to be murdered in the dirt if there was something I could do about it."

You frown at the woman. Such sentimental creatures some times. You dismount from your horse.

"I understand that you are a woman of od, and see such labours as your Christian duty," you say, "But tell me this. If this man had killed your old friend over there, raped that girl and yourself. If he had left you stripped naked, ravaged, dying in this wilderness. Would you still show him that kindness?"

She gives you a bold gaze. "Yes," she said.

You nod. "Very well. Solomon, a hand." You kneel and help raise the bandit from the other, Solomon takes him by the other arm. A look of surprise that is soon turning into a smile lights the nun's face.

"You're a better Christian than me, sister," you say, before drawing your knife and driving it into the bandit's throat. The nun gives a shocked wail as the bandit bled out with a gargling sound. "He didn't die in the dirt, at least," you say, pulling out your knife, letting him dance a death rattle on your arms before dropping him.

"You monster," she almost looks in tears.

You turn to your men. "Strip the corpses of anything valuable!" then you turn back to the nun and scowl. "If you want to help someone, help my squire and his horse. He risked his life to protect you."

And with that you slam your knife back into its scabbard and stalk off to oversee the looting.

You strip the dead of all their possessions, leaving them naked in the dirt. The weapons are mostly useless, and they've little armour of value save a good shield and a maille shirt. Orlando manages to captured the champion's horse. Its a very ordinary animal, but any horse has some value.

Of all the dead you gather only a fistful of hard currency, worth fifteen or so pfennings.

Once the corpses are counted you see you've slain near forty. A princely killing for such a small number.

You see that Hugo is pulling off his gambeson. The cut on his shoulder is surprisingly deep, and he is hissing with pain as he draws the quilted armour off. His horse takes the removal of the dart better, and Franz simply has to rub a good salve in the wound with some stitches.

"Hurts like hell," Hugo said.

The three pilgrims inch closer to your group.

The old man at arms steps forward.

"Excuse us m'lord, but I must ask. Would you shelter us the rest of the way to Caesarea?" he asked, helm in hand.

You consider the old man. He has strong arms and a strong jaw, but the age was creeping into his eyes.

"Aye," you say, "We are Christians, are we not? But obey my commands at all times, a captain can only have one ship."

The old soldier nodded. "Of course," he said, "That is just, that is military." He saluted you in a Roman fashion, fist to heart.

The nun gives you a hot look. "I'll obey no command that would have me break my vows," she said.

You smile. "And what makes you think I have any interest in breaking your vows?" you say, "If your vows are broken, it will be by your own actions."

She glares at you as you gather up your troops.

The old soldier was named Theodore, formerly an Armenian soldier, and the nun was named Adelheid, of the Convent of St Anne in Jerusalem. The girl they called Judith, and she kept a little apart from your group, particularly as you all were marked with the sweat and gore of battle.

You push on while daylight permits and organise a camp. Hugo gives himself up to the care of Sister Adelheid, who carefully cleans and tends to his wound.

You cannot say if the bandits will muster another attack, best to keep watch.

You pick the two 'elders' of the group, Franz and Theo, to keep watch. Franz growls at the mention of being an elder. He was certainly a far cry from Theo's advanced age.

"I take from your nose that you are a Jew..." you hear Theodore say as you move on to more pressing things.

Sister Adelheid was stitching up Hugo, who sat upright against his saddle, feeding a carrot to his horse. Solomon had left him a bottle of wine to drink, and he gulped it down every time the needle pierced his skin. She gave you a wary look.

The girl Judith was lying with her mule, reading a book over her skinny knees, resting her head against the beast's scruffy flank. When she saw you her look was slightly fearful, and she buried her head back into the book.

Solomon was fussing over the looted maille shirt trying to fix the broken links, while Orlando and Welf played a game of shatranj.

Talk to Hugo, let him know that as an older brother, we are proud of him. As his knight-master, a squire should remain calm, especially when pursued by the enemy.
>>
You muster down on Hugo. He's only a little drunk. For all that Adelheid has furious scowls for you, she works very delicately on your brother, her hands deftly wielding the needle with some skill.

You crouch on your haunches.

"Hey little brother," you say, ruffling his hair, "You did good today."

Hugo nodded, taking another gulp of the wine.

"A knight isn't just bold, he's also certain in his action," you say, "Focused at the task at hand and not given to panic. You were very knightly out there."

Hugo blushed.

"You were very brave," Adelheid added, "You will make a very brave knight, god willing. You are already a very brave man." She finished off her stitches and kissed him on the cheek.

Hugo's wispy little mustache disappeared under his tongue as his blush went to his roots. You couldn't help but grin, and pushed forehead to forehead.

"We might not share mothers, but you're my brother to the marrow," you say, "And know that I will always be proud of you."

Hugo looks like he might cry. "A-and I'm proud too," he said, "Proud to serve you, that is. You didn't have to. Father was going to have me take vows, y'know. Cousin Werther was meant to be your squire."

You didn't know that. You'd taken Hugo so quickly as your squire, and set off for the Holy Land, that you hadn't taken any concern of father into account.

"Thank you, sir," Hugo said. You hugged him around his good shoulder and he hugged you back.

The night draws dark and tents are assembled.

Chihirizahd lies on the hard ground as if she were in a palace. She had a cat-like ability to drape across things and look incredibly comfortable while doing so.

She had a hot look in her eye for you, as a hand made busy along the inside of her thigh.

"You were amazing to watch," she said, "The way you kill, and command other men, So powerful, so...dominate. Like a king." She come up onto her knees before you, still working her inner thigh but now with both hands.

"And the woman, I liked the way you handled her," she said, reaching up to loop her fingers through your sword belt, "Why you'd think she'd be sweeter to the man who saved her life."

Yeah cup her chin. "Sweetness needs to be drawn out of a woman, some do not give it freely," you say.

"Maybe you should just take it," Chihirizahd said, rubbing her face against your forearm.

"Some are frightened by boldness," you say, drawing her up to her feet.

"Not me," she replied, her hand trailing across your chest.

"No, you are bold enough yourself."

Your mouth closes on hers and the world drops away, the heat of battle carrying into the heat of your raw animal rutting. You think by the time you were done she'd been loud enough to awake the camp. You didn't care, as you held her twitching body against yours, slipping off to sleep...

When you get ready to head off in the morning you earn some looks from the new members of your group. Adelheid has a glare for you, but Judith cocks her head curiously. Theodore just has a disapproving frown.

Chihirizahd walks with a lightness to her dancer's step, and the men enjoying watching her pass by.

The young girl on mule back gave you an uncertain smile as you rode up beside her.

"Your friend Theodore said I should guard you," you said.

"He is a very good guard," Chihirizahd said, kissing you on the chin.

"Umm," Judith blushed a little.

"I saw that you were reading last night," you say, "Pray tell, what was the book?"

"A treaties by Hildegard of Bingen," she said. She drew the book out of her travel back and showed the cover to you. It was very well illuminated, and probably cost a good sum of money. "She's my hero. I want to be as much like her as possible. But I also have a book about Peter Abelard and Eloise, it has some of his music in it. He's pretty good."

She was a bright kid, and as she put the other book away she pulled out the other. It was a bit more rough and tumble, well thumbed and cheaply put together.

"They were very romantic," she said, "I cried when it got to the castration. He didn't deserve it."

"And a healer!" Judith interjected, "She writes a lot about how to treat wounds, and how to find a use of everything God has made for us. Um, she's not Trotula de Rugerrio, but she's pretty good! Lady Trotula is, she's another big hero of mine. I've read her books too."

She eyed you sideways. "Was she beautiful? I hear she's beautiful."

You think on that. "Beautiful is not the right word," you say, "She is handsome, and very robust. Attractive, in that way, but not a flower like Chihirizahd here." You drum a finger on Chihirizahd's navel.

"A woman is more than looks," you say, "A sharp mind, a good sense of humour, and a strong sense of duty. Looks last only a handful of years, but the rest are yours immortal. Aye! Who cares what Hildegard looks like, or the Lady of Salerno. What matters is their words. What they have done for God and for their fellow Christians. A husband might lust for a beautiful woman, but love is born from those other qualities. And you'll keep a good husband and make a good wife by focusing on those things."

She listens to your words with care, nodding. Soon she's smiling.

You launch into song. Planctus David super Saul et Ionatha, the Lament of Saul and Jonathan by King David. Some sing it heavy, but you keep the tune light and sprightly.

Judith is son singing along, knowing the words. She had a good clear voice, no doubt refined through her training to become a nun.

"That's...I like that," she grinning from ear to ear.

"Marriage, that's not for me. My sister wants me to take holy vows. I'd like to, and be like Hildegard, devote my time to god and helping people. But maybe, sometimes I wonder if there's something in marriage that has value. I see my sisters and see how unhappy they are, but my mother and father loved each other a whole lot."

"What happened?" she asked.

"She died."

Judith nodded, her eyes very solemn. "People do that," she said, "Only Mary was spared the pain of death."

"Aye," you reply.

The girl puts a hand to your thigh. "You'll be well Sir Wilhelm, man is not meant to love just the once and only," she said it with a smile that seemed possessed of an understanding beyond her years, "We are made to love and be loved. You nod. "You've surprising wisdom for your age," you said.

Judith blushed. "You are not so much older than me," she replied.

"'Tis not the years, it's the experience," that caused Chihirizahd to giggle in a way that made Judith blush even stronger.

"Well, I should go speak with Sister Adelheid," she said, burning brightly as she trotted her mule around to the solitary nun.

Adelheid had been watching you like a falcon this entire time, her cudgel swung before her legs in low outward arcs as she walked. You'd never seen a pretty woman wear such a sour expression for so long.

The days pass and you are at the gates of Caesarea. It is not so big as Sidon, though the lord within was Lord Gerard's twin brother.

"We'll ride with you all the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre," you say, offering your hand.

The old soldier smiled, taking it.

"Aye, so far you've done right by us," he said, "You seem a virtuous sort." He goes to tell the girls the news, leaving you with your older companions.

"Must you adopt every stray?" Franz grumbled.

"Oh, my master I think has dishonest reasons for adopting these strays," Chihirizahd said.

Franz shook his head. "Bloody women. Who needs them?"

Solomon laughed and clapped Franz's back. "I for one," he eyed the nun distant, "And one in particular, hmm. Something about a face that sour on such a pretty woman appeals, no?"

"No!" Orlando spluttered, "She is a holy woman besides. That is sheer degeneracy!"

Discretion is the better part of valour. You watch with Welf as the two bicker.

"God meant for me to bed so many women, or I would not be so good at it!" Solomon insisted.

"You lunatic Nubian, half-a-heathen if you suggest bismirching a good Sister," Orlando's face was all scrunched up, a balled fist raised.

"I think you just want the pretty nun for yourself!" Solomon replied, causing a gasp of surprise from Orlando. Solomon was probably right. "Eh, Hugo, what do you think?"

Hugo coughed. "Ah, she's very pretty," he rubbed his shoulder as he spoke.

"Men go wild for what's between a woman's legs," Chihirizahd said, "And the harder it is to get it, the wilder it drives them." She casts you a very amused look.

"God knows, you have all entertained the thought these last nights," Solomon said, making a jerking motion, "Even Welf. I am just the honest one here." Then he looked sly. "And if its not the sour sister, 'tis the novice's peaches I think."

They all spluttered at that, Welf and even Franz, but you laughed with some amusement and Chihirizahd simply gave a sigh.

"What's all the laughter about?" Judith came trotting up, totting her book bag, smiling brightly.

You take the book carefully, and open it to a beautiful illustration. This book was not a cheap reproduction either. The lettering was exquisite, the illustrations bright and vivid.

"My thanks," you say, closing the book and slipping it into your saddlebag, "I'll keep it safe, and return it to you in good condition."

She gives you a bright smile. "No thanks are necessary, sir," she said, "Keep it for as long as you'd like." Her long gold braid whipped around her as she turned to run back to her mule.

"Ah yes, nice peaches," Orlando said, admiring her backside.

You figure since you'll be spending the night in town you had time enough to finally make reality your long held dream of a Herculean helm.

You head to the markets, to craftsmen in particular, and find a man who works in furs. He's a normal enough looking fellow, with brown hair and drooping eyelids. A little short. When he talked bad teeth were obvious.

"Can I help you sir?" he asked.

Hugo handed you the lion skin and enclosed helm.

"Hmm, I can get that done for ten pfennings by the day after tomorrow," he said, "I got another commission I gotta do first."

>>

>>
"Are you really sure that other job is more important?" you ask, casually laying a hand on your sword hilt.

The man eyes your sword nervously.

"I suppose I could make an exception, for a knight such as yourself," he said.

You hand him the ten pfennings and he gets to work, with a promise it will be done first thing in the morning.

Now with that finally out of the way, you return to the tavern your party had taken residence in.

Franz and Orlando were playing a game of shatranj while Chihirizahd watched. Theodore had fallen asleep in front of the fire, and Judith was placing a blanket over him.

Solomon and Welf had fallen into a dice game with a group of sailors.

Adelheid you couldn't see, no doubt she was bothering God about something.

Hugo goes over to the dice game, waving to Solomon who took him in with an arm around his shoulder, producing a wince from the boy.

Adelheid, where was she? You check the rooms and come upon one with the sound of a woman's voice.

"Oh God," her voice was low, in prayer. You lean against the doorway. "Give me the strength to suffer this mortal world. Give me the strength to carry on with these venial men. Jesus, give me the strength to shelter my charge from their ways, so that she might enter your service unblemished and innocent. Give me the strength to...to remain virtuous."

You notice her on her knees through a crack in the door. Her head was uncovered, showing a messy crop of short blond hair. Her lips were trembling and head upturned, eyes shut tight. She had her skirts drawn up revealing her calves, and around her ankle was wrapped a nasty looking metal ringlet. It pierced her skin lightly, making it red and raw, a little band separating her leg and her foot.

"I want only to serve you Jesus," she said.

"Blind my eyes to the Nubian," she said, "Cloud his face from my mind. Bless, take from me the dreams you've sent of him, or let me know it is the Devil that sends them." She looked tortured. "Keep these perversions from assailing my mind. Please, tell me I am not that kind of woman in my heart. Please." Her hands fall between her legs and her face shows great yearning. "I dream of men, and the dreams grew worse. I saw them kill, and loot, violate your commandments. God it...it.." she started sobbing, bowed forward, "Show me that this life is the right one, that these temptations are but passing. Show me, show me."

She punched the ground and sobbed. In her smallest voice she spoke words that shook you to the core, that you couldn't even be sure you'd heard her correctly. "Show me a sign that you are real," she whimpered.

You back away from the door frame, much troubled by what you'd heard. You head back to the common room. Solomon was now best of friends with the sailors, and they dumped a toast over his laughing head.

"Aye, brother," you say, calling him over. Solomon gets up, slapping one of the sailors hard on the back. "Come here," you say, pulling him into your confidence.

"That sour faced nun is having a bad time of it," you say, "I think she might need someone to keep her company for the night."

"Oh?" Solomon quirks a brow.

"Mayhap, if you play your cards right," you say.

"Ah, you did promise me," he said, "After you had the maid and lady both."

"Well, go one then," you say, pushing him down the corridor. He walks away with a drunken chuckle, and you wonder how it might work out.

Judith hails you. "A game, sir?" she said, offering you the board.

"That's up to thirty, with a pot of one-thirty, whose still in the game?" the dice roller said, teeth gleaming.

You down a drink and consider bailing out. Judith has finished her ale however, and is calling out. "Next roll, next roll!" she said, giggling. Another pot slid by the two of you. Your jaw was tight set and eyes wide.

Other gamblers were stepping back however.

"Ah that's a win for the young lady!" the gambler said, "one-thirty in all. Hell's bells, that's call of beginners luck right there." The gambler pushed the stuck toward her, one hundred and thirty pfennings.

One of the sailors didn't look too happy about that.

"Fuck that," he roared, "No little cunt is taking my hard earned money." He's drawing a knife from his belt and reaching to grab her by the front of her dress.

Your sword is out, faster than you'd ever drawn it before. You take the man's groping hand. He stares dumbly at the stump, too drunk to realise he was dead. You drove the point through his neck and he fell, finally catching up. You turn on the other sailors and gamblers.

"Is there anyone else?" you demand.

They back away, the dice-roller in particular bowing. "Forgive us sir, we want nothing to do with it," he snivelled.

"Then get out of here," you pointed to the door with your bloody sword.

Judith sat rooted to her chair, eyes wide on the dead man, a hand covering her open mouth.

"Oh," she said.

You kicked the body off the table, away from her.

"Enough fun for the night?" you asked her.

She ran off quickly like a startled doe, a high little cry of 'God!' just once piping out of her.

You chase after Judith. She's running to the backrooms. You catch her right before she bursts through to the room she shared with Adelheid, an arm around her shoulder, and an arm under it. You hadn't planned to catch her in that hold, or to pick her up and hold her against you, but that's how it turned out.

Right outside the door, where harsh moans were coming from.

Throaty, deep, hard moans, interrupted with hard slapping sounds.

"Oh god," Adelheid's prayer seemed more joyful this time, though not as articulate.

Ah.

You cover up Judith's ears.

"Is she...?" Judith's voice seemed very weak. Her head was spinning. She kicks in your grip. "Let me go! He's raping her. She. She would never. Never ever!"

The Devil comes in many shapes...tonight he used the twin vices of greed and alcohol to weaken typically normal men. It was then he struck!

When a devout Christian man raises his hand in anger against his Christian brother, he is no longer following the teachings of Christ, for he has allowed the Devil to play with his heart and mind.

You carry her aside. You carry her aside and settle her down, away toward your room.

It's alright," you say, "It's not what you think. You've been drinking. Have you ever been drunk before?"

She shook her head.

"Yeah, that's what your feeling. It can be scary sometimes. And you hear things, but you hear them differently, yeah?"

"Uh," a hint of doubt was covering her face. The soft light lit her freckles, just a light dusting.

"And I killed that guy who was threatening you. He was going to hurt you really bad. That's got you mixed up double," you say.

You remember vividly how quick you'd moved, to draw your sword and kill the man. Her lip was quivering and she leaned against your chest.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed, "I don't know what I'm doing. I'm stupid, so stupid."

"Hey now," you take her cheeks in your hand. A tear ran across your thumb as she croaked out a sob. It was wicked that she should look so pretty while crying.

You wipe away her tears.

"You aren't stupid," you say, "Just a little messed up from all the excitement." She grabbed the front of your tunic and held herself against you.

"I'm an awful sinner," she said, "Awful."

"No worse than any of us. A bit of gambling and drinking isn't-"

"I've been lying to you since we met," she said, eyes very wide and nervous. Her tears were subsiding, but her face was still fearful. "We've been using you. I've been using you."

She buried her head in your chest. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."

Her head was done and her hands trembling against you.

"My name is not Judith," she said, "That is my father's grandmother's name. My name is Ioveta."

She looks up, looks you in the eye. "Those weren't just bandits that attacked us, they've been chasing me for weeks now, half way across the kingdom."

What?

"My name is Ioveta," she said, "My father was Baldwin. My sister is Melisende."

"My name is Ioveta Rethel. And I am a princess of Jerusalem."

+2 leadership, +1 war, +1 charisma.

Y'all could have done better towards the end. Tackling the guy would have kept things fun instead of her getting freaked out, and leaving Adelhied be instead of sending Sol up to her room would have stopped that particular kerfuffle from happening.

But you did well with the battle. It was possible for Hugo or whoever to die if you'd made too many missteps. You could have handled Adelheid better. She would have been warner to you if you'd stayed out of her argument with Solomon or let her treat the dead man.

She actually wanted to keep him alive for questioning, but you couldn't have known that.

I won't say too much because what could have been will probably still have a further effect, but you're wrong about that. There have been a whole lot of criss-crossing plots y'all have managed to dodge. Big, planned for characters you just missed out on meeting (for now) and plot lines that won't be materializing any more.

Because remember there is a time line, historical people and their non-historical agents are continuing with everything as you putter about doing other things.
