“Yeah… right,” you say, wrapping your mind around Rowan’s statement of hypothetical ass-kicking. “All we need is to like, get some scientists up in this to start theorizing like, all about the hypothetical levels of crap that you’d beat out of potential assailants.”

Rowan takes a second to make sense of what you’ve just said, then finally replies, “For real.”

A little later you give Frederick a call and get your secret meeting together, the secret meeting which will have you being looked after by about a hundred demonbane.

--

The mall is a good place to have wacky get togethers with random people you happen to know. Also, it’s good because Frederick thinks he’s safer around civilians. Whether or not that’s true is debatable, but hey, the plus side of you picking out the mall is that after you can like, maybe drop in a store or two afterwards. And then stop by the food court. Yeah.

You and the Hallows walk through the place with a purpose.

“It’s been a while since we all went out and did something together,” Cassandra observes, scanning the faces of the crowd. She’s wearing a green Oakland A’s jacket and a baseball cap, and has her hair pulled into a pony tail. She also carries a not at all suspicious gym bag big enough to fit a couple baseball bats inside, though it’s not baseball bats she packed in there.

“What are you talking about? We do stuff all the time,” says Ro, holding up a second to take a look into a storefront. She has her bastard sword on her back like it’s no big deal, though it seems to match stylistically well with her retro-styled Thor T-shirt.

Cassandra smiles. “I mean we haven’t done any marshal work together in a while,” she says. “It’s nice.”

You wrinkle your nose at all of the disparate feelings and random business around you. It’s been a little while since you’ve been in a crowded place. “Well, this isn’t really marshal stuff marshal stuff,” you clarify, adjusting your belt so it holds your rapier in place better.

Harvey backs you up. “This is not-marshal stuff marshal stuff, Mom,” he explains. All of his gear is hidden in his backpack.

Actually, you’re not sure if he’s backing you up or not. “Whatever. I told Freddy that I would hear him out as a third party person, so even though you’re all here just in case, this is kind of between me and him,” you say.

“Any business he has with you is our business too,” Isaac says from beside you. He doesn’t have his crossbow, and in fact, doesn’t even seem to be armed. You know he’s got more than a few tricks up his sleeves though, so that doesn’t really concern you at all.

You snort. “Yeah yeah, gotta stick together and so on,” you reply.

>So, I’ve got a question about this whole business before go-time. (?)
>You guys should get out of sight and get into position. He might already be there.
>Ro, be my buddy. I’d rather you be within sword’s reach if you need to be in sword’s reach.

Seems redundant with the last choice.

It was risky enough showing up together.

“So, just once more because I feel like it, make sure you stay out of sight,” you say. “I don’t want him getting the idea that I don’t trust him, even if I don’t.”

“Of course,” says Cassandra. “We’ll be nearby if you need us, though.”

“And you’re sure you don’t want someone to stay with you?” Isaac asks.

“Nah, he’d get all skittish. I don’t want Derek leaving crap out of his story,” you say.

“We’ll get into position then,” says Isaac. “We don’t want to tip him off yet. Good luck.”

“I don’t need luck if all you guys are going to be all everywhere and nowhere,” you reply.

Everybody makes themselves scarce. The Hallows split off into the crowd, and in mere seconds you’re pretty much alone. Well, time to go do this.

You go through the mall to the other end where you’re meeting up with Derek. You go the fountain thing and sit down, trying to collect yourself so you’re not jittery or anything. There’s no reason to be, really. Maybe?

Stress: 7/100

After a few minutes of trying to play Angry Bird on your phone, you find yourself markedly more angry than before. It’s a stupid game. (+1 Stress: 8/100) You give up and go back to watching your surroundings. It’s a few minutes more before Derek arrives.

He makes his way through the throng, and soon spots you. He still walks with a limp, but you think he’s somewhat improved from when you last saw him (9/10 HP; 26/26 PP). He wears scratched boots, worn jeans, and a heavy coat that’s big enough to conceal weapons. He obviously doesn’t have his lightning rifle on him, so maybe that’s a good sign. His hair is mussed, but he looks better rested than you’ve seen him before.

Derek makes his way over and stops before you. “Hello,” he says. “How are you today?”

>I’ll be great once you start telling me what the heck you’re doing in San Fransisco.
>I’m fine. How’re the Gracies? And Zote? He’s a robot or something, right?

You shrug. “I’m whatever,” you say. “Sit down.” You move over enough so that Derek can sit down and you can still be far away from him. You throw your arms over the back of the bench and take a second to examine his emotive vibes. He feels kind of… normal. Like, nothing specific, and not very much of it. “So,” you say, “you actually got some sleep. How’d that work out?”

Derek carefully sits down, adjusting his leg so that it’s not giving him undo discomfort. “It took a lot of sleeping aids, but I think I was justified,” he says. He gets a thoughtful look on his face for a second. “Pharmaceuticals are a lot better here than back home,” he notes.

“Yeah, we’ve got some good drugs,” you say, smirking to yourself. “If you like NyQuil there’s a bunch of other stuff you should try out.” You’re not sure if you’re joking or not. Maybe it’s both.

Derek seems a little hesitant to take you up on the suggestion. “I’ll keep that in mind,” he says, though you don’t think he will.

“So how’s Zote doing? Not too shaken up from near death experiences with me, is he?” you ask. But then you’re curious. “Can he get shaken up? I mean. Like. He’s a robot or something, isn’t he? I guess he might not have feelings.”
>>
>>34681376
He shakes his head. “He’s not totally a robot. He does have a pseudo-soul,” says Derek. “Clockers don’t start with feelings, but they usually develop something if you let them run long enough.”

“So what’s he, then?” you ask. “He run long enough or whatever?”

Derek gets a kind of irritated look on his face, though it has nothing to do with you. “As a rule, Zote’s always in a bad mood,” he tells you. “Here especially.”

>So basically, he’s just a huge jerk that happens to be a robot.
>Oh come on. The city’s a total tourist vacation spot. What’s not to like?
>Maybe it’s not the place so much as the company.
>Okay, so I’ve got to ask. Is he a person or is he like, a piece of construction equipment? Because that’s the number one question in Terra.

The way Derek talks makes me think that we're a cameo waifu in his quest instead of the other way around.
>>
“Well he sounds like he’s pretty much a person, so more power to him for being mad at everything,” you say. “I mean, you’re like, fighting a war, aren’t you? And here you are, totally not fighting a war. Sounds like he’s got some good reasons to be mad. The homeland needs good men in trenches and he’s stuck playing time-travel hockey.”

“What on earth are you talking about?” Derek asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Okay, so not time travel, but you know what I mean,” you say, getting kind of impatient. “You’re here and not there. Why the hell did you come back?”

Derek sits back a little. “Frankly, the war isn’t going very well. We need to win soon,” he says. “We have a plan, but it depends on someone working from a foreign plane to make it work. The Revolutionary Army doesn’t have much in the way of operatives who can work outside of Ferra, and since I’m one of the few familiar with the concept, I landed the assignment.”

“The assignment being…?” you ask.

“What I’m about to tell you is sensitive information,” says Derek. “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but the geography of the different planes don’t match up when you cross over. Remember the goblin warren?”

“No, I completely forgot,” you reply sarcastically, scowling at him. You roll your eyes then. No way you’d ever forget about flags and goblins and killing goblins with flags. That’s a once in a life time experience, maybe. “Of course I remember. Why?”
>>
>>34682996
“That warren is in Meridian, the mirror plane,” says Derek. A liveliness comes into his face as he continues. “If you were to go to Meridian, walk a hundred feet, and then jump back to Terra, you’d come out a hundred feet from where you started,” he tells you. “Not all the planes line up like that though. Let’s say you came to Ferra, drove a mile, and then somehow came back to Terra. There’s no telling where you’d wind up.”

Huh. That’s something to think about. “So you’re doing something that has to do with that,” you say.

Derek nods. “The disadvantage we face is that the enemy has air superiority,” he says. “We’re surrounded by seas and mountains. They can reach us, but we can’t reach them.”

“So what’s all this plane stuff have to do with that?” you ask.

“We’re going to use it to launch an attack on their capitol from a thousand miles away,” he says. “The only problem is that the only viable route is blocked. My job is to unblock it.”

We don't know shit about landwell portal making and I don't want to tell Freddy boy that we're a landmaster and I don't want to tell him about our wells. Unless he starts going on about how he needs the cash to bribe a politician to let him do [something] in Muir woods or on top of the mountain, we keep it hush hush.
>>
>>34683234
Agreed. Sierra knows two things: Jack and Shit. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
>>
>>34683084
This means we might just be able to open it for him. In würst case scenario we could probably lend him the land power instead of letting Rowan have it.
>>
>>34683376
No, worst case scenario is definitely 'well, attuned landwells just plain can't be used as portals. Gonna have to cap a bitch - sorry, but it's either one life or the entire resistance, and everything they represent.'

yeah, no. it was a pretty intimate moment with Ro and she greatly enjoys the wings. That shit is not supposed to be given to people we don't fully trust, and Derek has no allegiance to us. There’s so many things you’re not getting here. “Blocked… how?” you ask.

“Every plane is dotted with these… rifts,” says Derek, seeming to struggle with his words for a second. “Rifts that connect the worlds. Travel between planes is difficult to manage at the best of times for even a single person, but with the right preparation, you can use a rift like a doorway. Anything can go through,” he tells you.

“Like an army,” you say. This is beginning to sound strangely familiar.

“Exactly,” Derek replies. “Our route goes from Ferra to Cerra by rift, and then from Cerra to Meridian, and finally from Meridian back to Ferra, right inside Bronzehill, our enemy’s capital. The problem is that the Cerra-Meridian rift is sealed.”

“Okay, so again, how’s it sealed?” you ask.
>>
>>34684202
>landwells
>>
>>34684202

“I’m not certain. It was sealed a long time ago, I know that much at least,” says Derek. “The kingdoms of Cerra war with the creatures of Meridian every few hundred years. Whoever sealed it, whether from the Meridian side or the Cerran side, did a good job. It can’t be opened because it can’t be found.”

You give him a critical look. “But you have some hot plan about how to do that,” you say.

Derek smiles slightly. “I have contact with someone who can sense rifts,” he says. “All we need to do is take him to the area and he’ll find the rift. After he finds it, I should be able to open it.”

It might just be someone like Borya or Philo who can see the landwells without actually being a landmaster.

Odds are, though, they're still going to have to off the old landmaster to take it though.

Which means multiple freed up wells for Sierra to take.
>>
>>34684592
That's a good illustration of why theoretically-immortal landmasters probably tend to die young.
>>
DO NOT GIVE IN TO THE LAWN!
>>
“You’re telling me that you met some kind of uh… some kind of rift lord,” you say, with utmost skepticism. “A rift lord who can sense… ‘rifts.’” You air quote the word.

Rifts. Right. Totally unrelated in any way to landwells.

“I understand your skepticism,” says Derek. “But where magic is concerned, everything is possible. Keep an open mind.”

You give him a kind of unfriendly smile. “Nah, I believe,” you say, settling in to be more comfortable. “It’s actually kind of funny. I think I know somebody who can sense rifts too.” That somebody being yourself. “So if you’re in this for the ‘rifts,’” you say drily, “what’s with the hellborn and the money and all that? And why are you even here in the first place? You could literally be anywhere and be doing what you’re doing right now.”

“Not exactly true,” Derek answers. “The Bay Area is conveniently near the Cerran rift after you cross over – it’s not a bad staging ground. If I was somewhere else, it would take more than a few jumps to do everything, and I don’t have the tools to make that happen in a workable timeframe.”

“Why not work someplace you have the tools?” you ask. “I mean, why not just do all this from Etenrhine?”
>>
>>34685780

“It isn’t safe,” says Derek, a dark look on his face, and a kind of anger smoking off him. “The Order Eclipse has Meridian under lock and key when it comes to Etenrhine. I wouldn’t be able to get an expedition under way without one of their precogs unravelling the whole plan,” he explains. “I can move freely here.”

“So the Gracies are helping you put together some kind of expedition?” you ask. “What’s the cash for?”

Derek seems embarrassed by the question, but that doesn’t stop him from answering. “Mercenaries,” he says, sheepishly. “I’ve augured the success of our expedition. No matter many times I foretell it; the only thing I can think to improve the outcome is security. There’s going to be some kind of conflict – it’s destined to be.”

“Destined to be, sure,” you say, nodding to yourself. Hey, he’s a fate mage. Or at least he says he is. He gets a free pass. Maybe? Anyway, this is beginning to take shape as something you understand. But the one thing you still don’t’ understand really is the whole fight to begin with. “You know, this seems like a really cool plan and stuff, and I’m happy to let you do whatever you’re going to do,” you say, “but there were some people trying to do something kind of similar just a few months ago, right here, in my city, and they weren’t the good guys.” You give him a flat, challenging glare. “Tell me in ten words or less why I shouldn't just get you arrested or something on the off chance you’re evil.”

You feel a sharp pang of anxiety from Derek at your challenge. He collects himself quickly, though, and pieces together a reply. “I could have killed you to get what I needed,” he says, quieter than you expected. He sighs and rubs his eye with a hand. “I didn’t because it wasn’t the right thing to do.”

>Oh. I uh. I guess that's kind of a good point.

Fred went and more or less described landwells, then struggled to think of a term Sierra would understand, presumably because he thinks she doesn't know what a landwells is (most people don't), and eventually decided to just call them rifts so he wouldn't have to bother with an explanation.

“What part of ten words or less didn’t you understand?” you ask indignantly. That was like eighteen words minimum. “Although,” you allow, “you do make a good point. But just for the record even if you tried to kill me, no way you could have.” Though he should get points for not trying to kill you.

Frederick squints slightly at you. “I’m glad you’ve never seen what a lightning rifle does to a living being,” he says simply. His somewhat unrecognizable accent come through a little heavier when he says this.

Something about his voice when he says this makes you feel uncomfortable. (+2 Stress: 9/100) “To be honest, I really don’t have any stake in your war thing one way or the other,” you say plainly. “You’re okay though, so good luck I guess. But for clarification purposes, these rifts - they're like where ley lines meet up and natural energy pools, right?”

Fred gives you a surprised look. “That’s an accurate description, yeah,” he says.

Okay, it looks like you were right. No need to assume, though. “We call them landwells,” you say. “And a word to the wise. Your contact might not be playing things straight with you. That rift seeker guy?” you say. “I get the feeling he’s a landmaster. And if he is a landmaster, then if you take him to the landwell, he might screw you over about the whole bridgeway to D-Day plan. He can be like, nope, and then nobody’s rifting anywhere.”

Freddy gives you the explain yourself look.
>>
>>34687268

“He touches the landwell,” you say, “he masters it. He decides who goes through.” At least that’s your understanding. “He’s probably just using you to get him in the ballpark or to get him past the dangers or kill the old landmaster if there is one.”

“There are other people like this out there?” he asks, sounding dismayed. “Have you ever met somebody like this before?”

“Well,” you say coyly, “I know this girl. Like, she’s pretty cool, you know. Anyway, maybe I could recommend her instead if your rift seeker isn’t going to get pissed if you fire him. Better somebody you know, right?” Because landwells are goodwells. More is better, and your collection is just beginning. Also, the potential to get wings is not something you will let slip from your claws.
>>

Frederick considers the offer. “I haven’t shared much information with him,” he says. “I could just say we’re cancelling the operation and he’d be none the wiser. Do you trust her?”

“With my life,” you reply as seriously as you can manage. “You would too. She’s like, pretty much awesome.”

“Can you put me in touch with her?” he asks.

“Sure. Not today though. She’s got plans,” you say. This continued ruse gives you the detestable urge to giggle, but doing so would ruin it, so you don’t and keep a straight face instead. You look aroudn you for any signs of the Hallows, or for any signs of extra-dimensional company. “Would it jinx us if I said I’m glad we could get through a conversation without getting attacked by anybody?” you ask.

Frederick gets a faraway look for a second, but then refocuses on you. “Not this time,” he says. “A word of advice, though – don’t tempt fate.”

That’s kind of a scary thought, but you can probably forget it if you try hard enough. “So before I ditch you, I have to ask. When you were talking about air superiority, you mean like, planes, or are you talking about something all ridiculous like dragon riders?” you say.

“There are fixed wing aircraft,” Frederick says. “Wyvern riders are common, but they don’t have as much range. They tend to operate exclusively with mancers or cloud cruisers.”

“Like, airship zeppelins?” you ask. That sounds like a pretty dumb idea.

“Not exactly – only civilians operate airships,” Freddy answers. he again struggles for an appropriate word before he decides to just make one up “Cloud cruisers are… electro-craft. They’re flying battleships. They can go anywhere and shell anything with impunity.”
>>
>>34688313

That sounds pretty harsh. You want to ask about what keeps them in the air, but you don't like science very much. “What about the whole thing about reading your fortune?” you ask. “You know there’s going to be a fight?”

“When I augur, sometimes it comes in clearly, sometimes not so clearly,” Freddy says. “It’s hard to piece together helpful specifics. The future doesn’t generally like being known.”

Still, that sounds like it would come in handy at school. And also elsewhere too. “Well man,” you say, holding out your fist. “It was real, but I got to go.”

Frederick bumps his fist with his own. “Thanks for the heads up about the landmaster thing,” he says. “Tell your friend I could use her help.”
>>
>>34688337

You stand up and make ready to leave, as does Freddy. “I’ll send her the good word,” you say. “By the way, I don’t know how you do calendars, but tonight’s New Year’s. Go see some fireworks or something.”

Fred smiles, and for a second you actually feel something positive coming from him. “I’ll give it a shot,” he says. “Goodbye.”

You both head your separate ways.

You run into Isaac about a moment later. He appears out from behind a newspaper, not thirty feet away. “I’m surprised nothing happened,” he says, sounding vaguely troubled. “You just talked?”

>Frederick talks big. We should keep an eye on him just in case.

He's probably got that sweet Germanic broadness about his shoulders, stoked by the fiery valour of the guerilla protecting his people, its flames illuminating his noble Ursine soul from within and inspiring all who follow him with its valor and passion. At the same time, he's been tempered by the raw innocence of his youth, the cynical stoicism of a soldier trapped by the mire of a hopeless battlefield and a dying civilization. And while the fires of his spirit burn bright, they also make the lines on his face, the doubts in his mind, and the cracks on his sale more evident. So 7.5/10, would bang after intoxication and release of stress through mutual problem sperging.

“Freddy’s an okay guy. The robbing banks thing was more Gracie one and Gracie two being idiots,” you say to Isaac. Seriously though, who thinks it’s a good idea to rob banks? There’s much better ways to make fast money without digging your own grave.

Isaac nods. “What is he doing here?”

You tell him the whole story. And then when you meet up with Ro, Harvey, and Cass, you tell them again while eating Panda Express’s orange chicken at the food court. While you’re being chatty, Isaac takes all the weapons back out to the car, because there’s no need for weapons on a mall trip.

Anyway, oranges are likely the best natural fruit flavor there can be. When you put that flavor on a meat flavor, even better. After you finish your half plate of orange chicken, you eat your other half plate of Chicken Chow Mein, which is so greasy but also so good. And then you eat all the rice, because they gave you a big cup of rice.

Even though you maybe had more food than everyone, you manage to finish first. You drink down the remainder of your Cherry Coke, and then take a minute to bask in the delight of having devoured everything in front of you.

Everybody else chats lightly and just mostly be’s themselves as they eat. Wait. Maybe you can try that thought again. They chat lightly and are… your family talks amongst themselves as they are themselves. No. They, the Hallows, while eating, also act as they are usual to act. As they are wont to do.
>>
>>34689980

Being all normal and stuff, like, as is characteristic of them, they eat and talk like they normally do.

That’s right.

Harvey cracks open a fortune cookie, discarding the cookie in favor of the fortune. “To one who waits,” he reads, “a moment seems like a year.”

“That’s deep,” says Rowan.

You glare at Harvey. You can’t just… you can’t just read the fortune. (+1 Stress: 10/100) “Eat your freaking cookie,” you tell him.

Harvey gives you a uninterested look. “Do you want it?” he asks, proffering you the broken shell.

“No I don’t want it,” you tell him back. “You have to eat it!”

“Why? They’re pretty gross if you think about it,” he says. “Nobody wants to eat fortune cookies.”

“You have to eat it – that’s what makes the fortune valid,” you explain. Seriously, it’s like he’s never thought of this before.

“That would explain a lot, actually,” Isaac says, popping another piece of sweet and sour pork into his mouth.

You give Isaac an incredulous look. “Don’t tell me you don’t eat fortune cookies,” you say.

Isaac gives you a helpless look and refocuses on his food.

“It’s just something your dad does,” Cass informs you. “I’ve tried my best but I can’t pull him out of it.”
>>
>>34690000

You feel disgusted with the situation. “That’s – you shouldn’t do that,” you say, wincing as you try to reason with the guys. “You’re cheating. You can’t get a fortune cookie and not – you might as well just get stupid little fortune put in your food somewhere if you’re going to skip the cookie.” This is not the revelation you wanted to have today. You’re okay with a lot of things but this isn’t one of them. (+1 Stress: 11/100)

Ro smirks, her expression bemused. “I think Sierra’s overthinking this,” she says.

You glare at Rowan for taking his side in all this.

However, Harvey surprises you. He shakes his head at Ro, sadly. “No,” he admits. “She’s right.” Then, regretfully, he gathers up all of the cookie parts on his plate, and places them in his mouth. He chews for a minute with slow, mournful motions, and then swallows.

Sweet mercy, he sure took his time. (-3 Stress: 8/100)

Isaac takes advantage of the calm to speak to you. “Are you really set on accompanying this Frederick character for a landwell?” he asks. “You’d be taking a big risk for something you may or may not find.”

Think about the wings. “It was just something I was throwing out there,” you say dismissively. “Haven’t made up my mind yet.”

“What your Isaac’s trying to say,” Cass tells you, “is that we’re not going to tell you what to do. We just want you to be careful around these kinds of things. Consider about both sides of the argument before you make a decision.”
>>
>>34690020

The problem with that reasoning is that you have awesome super powers, and not ever doing anything dangerous means you never have occasion to use your, to be honest, mostly destructive abilities. “Freddy’s not doing the thing until a while from now,” you say. “I’m still in deliberations.”

Isaac nods, seemingly content with your answer. “So, where’s everybody going?” he asks.

You didn’t have anything in mind yet, which in Hallow tradition means everyone answers faster than you.

“Bookstore,” Rowan says.

Cass is less exciting. “I’m picking up a few things from Target.”

“I was going to check out some clothes stores,” Harvey says.

Everybody looks at him, as do you.

Harvey is unfazed. “I need new shirts,” he explains. “New year, new look.”
>>
>>34690040

“What about you?” Isaac asks, looking to you, good-naturedly. “You look like you could use a haircut. Unless… you were growing it out?” He asks the question uneasily. He obviously didn’t consider the possibility earlier.

The thought of walking into a place full of people waving pairs of needle-sharp, brightly glistening little metal scissors all over the place gives you a shiver. (+2 Stress: 11/100)

Cassandra and Rowan give Isaac a deathly look on your behalf.

Actually, thinking about it a little bit, Terrorizing Gaze requires eye contact and I bet a few more Belphegoran powers do too. So eyeballs in the shadows would have mad synergy.

At Panda express, I prefer the Beijing Beef. But the orange chicken is pretty good Americanized Chinese fast food. Though I have no clue how Sierra eats it with a sweet drink instead of water.

“Yeah I was uh. Yeah,” you say, brushing your bangs aside. “Long hair and stuff.” You probably wouldn’t look bad with long hair. The only problem is you lack the discipline necessary to have long hair. “I’ll deal with it sooner or later. Just… not now.” Of course, there are ways to cut hair without scissors. The problem with those ways is that you don’t like how they look.

“Anyway,” you say, moving on and off that particular topic, “I’m with Harvey on this one. I need new threads.” Perhaps new accessories? You don’t buy clothes very often.

“You’re actually going shopping for clothes?” Ro asks, sounding surprised.

“Hey. It’s been known to happen,” you say. “I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that I got a brand new wardrobe. There’s kind of no reason to get new stuff when all your stuff is new.”

“You want any help?” Cassandra asks.

“I got this,” you tell her. “Some things you have to do on your own.”

“Yeah,” Harvey says. “And that’s why Sierra’s coming with me.”

Cass checks her phone for the time. “Well everybody have fun. Shoot me a text if you get tired of bumming around, but let’s try to wrap it up by three.”

There is a general agreement, and people start clearing their places. Doesn’t look like there’s much stopping you now.

We are a walking ball of death in melee, if they are in that range it isn't a problem.

Besides our foes could generally stick their claws in our flesh rather then hair.
>>
>>34692168
Lube it up with lard, and put metal in it, like a pirate.
Yarr!

We could wear it in a bun, or something?
Or we could glamor it away, like horns. Anyone grabbing us will grab us by horns anyway.
