You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Three down, three to go.

This afternoon, you have some kind of big fancy gala to go to (seriously, for reals, that’s not hobo code for anything), where you’ll be getting up to all kinds of shifty crap. Now, however, you’re playing tag, and you are It (of course you are. You’re a young man somewhere in the mid-point of transforming into a giant mutant lizard. Who else could possibly be It?). After dispatching Layla, you tagged Kevin and Gaby in quick succession. Now you’ve found Lucas and things have gotten… weird.

“Dude.” You break your silence, and your invisibility, materializing out of the air. “What are you doing?”

Lucas nearly jumps out of his skin. What it LOOKED like he was doing, to you, was messing his knuckles the hell up. He stares in silence, the empty apartment seeming almost eerily quiet in the absence of his fists crack-crack-cracking against the wall.

“Uh…” He looks like you’ve caught him with his hand in his pants. Doesn’t know whether he should be running or not. Legs are tense, like springs. “…this is… it’s how I charge up my powers.”

Hey Crusty, if we get Echolocation, will Geointuitive still only be used with JJ's eyes even though his brain is what's doing the intuitive "calculations"?

Yeah, well, that seems sort of like a load of shit.

“Okay… well, yeah, I’ve seen you do that stuff before… but you weren’t bleeding.”

You tried not to sound too accusatory, but apparently that was in vein, because Lucas’ caught-off-guard expression begins to look a lot like anger.

“It doesn’t… it doesn’t work like that.” He explains. “Not always. I can only take so much of the force in, some of it has to go somewhere…”

The blood prickles at your nostrils, warm and sharp and darkly intoxicating, like the aftertaste of rum. You can almost feel his knuckles pulsing from there.

“What about the boat?” You ask. “You didn’t have to hit anything on Creeper’s ship.”

He huffs, rolling his shoulders in annoyance.

“It works different with heat. It’s easier.”

Okay. You think this is possibly time to deploy ‘reason’.

“Listen Lucas, I'm not trying to make fun of you, man, it's just... you’re hurting yourself.” You nod down at his hands. He follows your gaze, and he looks almost… disgusted. “And if it's just to get a better boost of power, then maybe we can come up with a better way to do that. Weren’t you making headway with Noriko, helping her regulate her charge?”

You feel his fists tighten. Nails almost biting through flesh. He’s sweating quite a lot, isn’t he?

“Noriko ain’t always here is, she!?” He shouts, the red in his eyes overrunning their borders, lancing out through the air in bright bands of crimson static. “She most definitely wasn’t there when they snatched me off the street! She wasn’t there in the crate! She wasn’t there when…”

His heart skips a bit. He sways very slightly on his feet.

“…she wasn’t…”

“Alright, uh…” You’re starting to actually be pretty worried now. Little flecks of lightning are coiling across Lucas’ knuckles – reminds you of Noriko. “…Lucas? Did… did you get a top-up from Noriko right before this?”

He nods. His eyes pop and spark, like little Roman candles.

“…And, uh, you’ve been doing that a lot, right…?”

“…Yeah…”

“…And…” And you feel you stomach curdling. “…And you haven’t been releasing any of it, have you?”

He’s silent. The air shimmers around his fists.

“Well, uh… you feeling alright, Lucas?” Small steps to start with.

“I feel great, actually.”

He doesn’t look great. He looks like he’s gonna hurl. Except, instead of sicking up everywhere, he’ll bring the whole building down.

“That’s good.” No it’s not. Not it’s not. “In that case… I bet you twenty bucks you can’t use all that energy to run super fast.”

No! No what are you even doing? Why would you ever say tha–

You duck aside almost automatically as the ground explodes under Lucas’ feet and he goes hurtling past you, snapping free a length of naked rebar on his way. He makes it to the other end of the apartment block in two explosive leaps, each one thundering in your ears like cannonfire, and hurls his makeshift javelin straight out into the opposite building. It bores deep into the concrete, a vague red light propelling it on its way.

And then he jumps out.

Ah. In that case, grabbing him would likely interfere with/interrupt whatever he's doing, right? He believes he can at least make the fall and is planning on it. Coming out of nowhere and grabbing him in the middle of it seems more likely to hurt him, and JJ if attempts to grab him.

Holy shit man.

You dash in Lucas’ wake, the air rippling with faint traces of heat around you. You’re honestly surprised there’s no steam coming of his flesh. You have no idea what he’s doing and no idea if HE has any idea what he’s doing, and you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing either, except now you’re –

You hit air. Your arms stretch and contort, wings spreading in their place. You sail, dipping down to follow after him.

He streaks through the air like a comet through the atmosphere, a trail of bright red phosphorescence bleeding through the sky behind him. Amazingly, he makes it – he looks like he’s in for the drop for a second, but at the last moment you realize his trajectory. He’s aiming for the length of rebar he threw into the opposite building.

And he catches it – just. His fingers slip and slide a little but they eventually find a solid grip.

Barely hesitating, he slams his palm down on the wall. A deep, crimson glow spreads through the concrete, like blood through linen, and without warning it explodes inward, forming an impromptu entrance. Swinging inside, he breaks into a run – presumably for the other end of the building, where he can do that shit again.

>[X] Keep chasing him.

Wow, that was completely insane. You can’t help but he sort of impressed, though.

You definitely couldn’t have made that jump. Not without rockets strapped to your boots, anyhow.

You soar down in through one of the nearby windows, following Lucas as he runs – smashes, okay, he’s smashing through walls now – through the building, debris flying in his wake. You grimace as your arms transform. Kinda annoying having to shift your arms every time to swoop into a building. They’re just not made for the indoors – too big and clunky. In the air they guide you through the void without trouble, but on the ground they just mess up your balance.

Even with the head-start, you’re faster than him on foot, and you manage to cut him off in the remains of some dude’s (and his family of four, heat shadows on the wall, don’t look don’t look) dining room.

“Nicely done.” You congratulate him, and instantly realizing you’re rewarding him for recklessness and overall stupidity. Better back up a bit. “You… you knew you could do that, right?”

He doesn’t answer. He just sort of looks like he’s gonna vomit again, and then… then he raises both his hands up into a ball, the air shifting crimson around them, and –

Ah.

Oh.

The danger sense explodes along your spine.

“No! Don’t”–

He slams his fists down. You feel the floor disintegrate under you. It rolls in slow-motion, like wave through calm seas – a flash of red like a spike in the back of head, concrete shifting and cracking apart instantly, plaster transforming into streams of pressurized vapour. Rolling thunder, like cannons lighting up the horizon.

You jump, or you would, but the ground beneath your feet is like topsoil, just rubble falling away into the void. You grasp at the air and you fall. You –

Everything flashes back and forth. You’re on the ground. Everything’s rumbling. You think you hit your head?

Yeah. You groan. You hit your head. Must’ve been some of the debris. You blink, pulling yourself up, and take stock of your surroundings. You’re surrounded by rubble, most of it from the floor above, some of it possible from the one above that. The building around you groans uneasily, and you realize, glancing about, that one of the main supports is capsized across the very prone form of Lucas, who appears to be out cold.

I always figured that whatever gave rise to the Scar was a straightfoward brawl, mostly physical violence with little to no blasting. Like Captain America fights the Hulk. So the Scar previous residents could have heard when the fight started and got out of there pretty fast. I imagined the death toll to be at a dozen, worst case scenario.

Though that doesn't explain why it wasn't populated in the beginning. I just never stopped to think about it.
>>

Alright. You can hear his pulse. He’s alive.

You stand up carefully, listening for the subtle whines and groans of the building’s infrastructure. It’s taken a great deal of damage – probably more than it was ever really designed to withstand – but it survived whatever made all those awful human shadows and it’ll survive this. You just need to tread with caution.

You make your way to Lucas. Up close, he looks okay – he’s not bleeding or anything. There’s a thin, skin-level glow surrounding him, just barely palpable enough for you to make out. You imagine anyone else would’ve missed it. Whatever it is, it seems to have stopped any inconvenient bits of rubble from braining the kid on the way down.

>>
>(2/2)

It’s fading quick, though. Hopefully that means he’s spent his charge and he’ll be back to normal when he wakes up.

Still, that’s new, isn’t it? Didn’t know he could do that. Didn’t know he could do a lot of things.

You nearly break your goddamn back against that stupid pillar, but eventually you get it off him, shifting the kid out from underneath and easing it down in his place. You don’t see any convenient stairwells, so you take the window out, slinging Lucas under one arm and climbing your way down to the empty streets below with the help of your weird Spider-Man hands.

You’re honestly exhausted. You plop down into the snow to catch your breath, leaning up against some fallen eave or whatever it is. Lucas breathes in and out beside you, slumped incognisantly against your shoulder. You relax. The breeze rolls over you and down through the street, fresh and clear. You can feel your head mending, the bruise along one side of your face flattening out. You –

An arc of colour stands out against the greys and white of the scar. You blink. Straight ahead, at the base of the opposite building, someone has sprayed angry red outlines around the stricken shadows that huddle along the side of the wall. Atop them, in ostentatious red-and-green letters, there are words graffiti’d across the concrete.

THE DRAGON HAS TEETH

You feel yourself tensing up. There are people inside. You can hear movement.

>[X] Uses Senses, Avoid Jinkies

The trek back from the Tabbycat flashes through your skull. You’ve seen those words before, on other walls.

Well, you’ll be damned if that isn’t the most suspicious thing you could possibly write. Aside from ‘Secret Brotherhood Meeting Spot, Very Hush Hush”, you don’t know how you could endeavour to be more obviously menacing. Practically begging for someone to just listen in, isn’t it? Someone with big floppy dog-elf-lizard ears maybe, and deeply unsettling eyes capable of sifting through the thermal range, and perhaps a bloodhound’s big fat hyper-sensitive nose.

Someone like that.

You fade into the background, easing Lucas down onto the ground (he’s still sweating pretty profusely, but he looks much better. You notice that there are some big nasty bruises across his back where that pillar came down, but frankly, he got off lucky. That thing should’ve squashed him flat) and approaching the side of the building. There are numerous ways in – the immense act of property destruction that created the Scar has left the place looking like a beehive – but you don’t take any of them, electing to just press your ear up against the wall near one of the breaches, stretching out your senses and angling your vision into the thermal end of the spectrum.
>>
>(2/2)

“…listen here, you, I have no interest in anything you might be selling, and neither does my companion…”

Wow, that’s an accent. This is the kind of voice that reads The Odyssey on a tape.

There are four heat signatures, as far as you can see. They’re further on into the building, in an open crevasse that was once the back of an apartment. One’s small, female, probably Layla’s age. Then there are two others, both standing to one side. One of them has a thick, long tail, and her body temperature is a mite bit low. The one speaking sits – or stands, you’re not sure – on its haunches, posturing almost defensively between the smaller figure and the others. It… it’s like a really big cat or something.

“Look, we told you, we’re not selling. It’s a taster.” Says one of the warm bodies, spreading her arms as if to imply no harm. “It’ll be good, I promise. It’ll make you feel good. It’s holy.”

“I think not, you absolute harpies…”

You think you’ve heard enough.

>[X] Better intervene. This sounds like it could turn ugly.

One of the others cuts him off with a long, sibilant hiss.

That’s when you decide to get involved. You know exactly what this sounds like. In a way, you can’t believe your luck.

You move quickly through the ruins, soon getting them in visual range.

The dealer – the one that’s talking, anyway – is a tall, lithe woman in her early twenties, probably just three or four years older than you, a streak of jet black hair tied in a tail atop her head and bright, predatory eyes gleaming in their sockets. Her skin has a weird, unhealthy sheen to it, but you can all but feel the dense, powerful musculature shifting under her clothes. You think she has fangs too. She’s not carrying any Jack, as far as you can tell – instead, you can smell it on the shorter woman beside her, who obscures her features under heavy raincoat at least three or four sizes too big for her. Coarse, black scales cover her forearms, and the tail you picked out earlier looks like it belongs to something you’d see in Jurassic Park.

Their prospective customers are a girl in her early teens with a big, unflattering third eye set atop her forehead, and... a lion. Or a panther. Or some mixture of the two. Sitting on its haunches, it’s almost as tall as you, white fur dotted with long sinuous protrusions, almost like feelers, or those… eyebrowey-whiskery things you see on Chinese dragons. It has horns, too – dark, like ivory, swept back like the devil’s. And it was definitely talking a before.

God damn this place is getting weird.

Well, time to send a message, you guess. ‘Stay out’, written in allcaps, with five or six exclamation marks and possibly a little cartoon skull. If you had the callousness in you, it’d be written in blood, too, but you’re far too afraid of yourself for that.

The mule is the closest. At least, that’s what you assume she is. She’s not doing any of the talking and her body-language reeks of nervousness. And she’s not the Jack.

“Look, guy, it’s a gift.” The dealer’s getting impatient. You can smell it on her. Her foot’s tapping hard against the ground. Are those claws on her fingertips, or something else? It’s like they’re made of… copper… crossed with chitin… crossed with bone. “Why don’t you let me talk to your little friend over there, I’m sure she has an opinion of her own to”–

“Absolutely not, harlot!” Ha. Harlot. This guy is magnificent, you swear to God his name must be Giles or something.

You make your way over the remains of the wall separating you from your mark, edging closer.

Suddenly, her heart spikes, and she breathes in deep, nostrils flaring under that hood of hers. A long, pale tongue slips out, tasting at the air.

She turns toward you, and you know you’re done. You pounce, claws out, and are moderately surprised when she raises her own hands to block. You squeeze, knotting her fingers through hers, and she lets out a surprised yelp – your claws dig blood out from under her scales, and hers do the same to yours.
>>
>>34656545

>>

You quoted me there.
>>
>(2/2)

The dealer jumps back.

“What the hell, E? What the hell’re you”–

Luckily, you have an ace. You grind your teeth and apply the volts. The mule convulses in your grasp, bucking against the air, her voice warbling up and down as steam rises where your skin touches hers. You feel yourself becoming visible, feel the immediate gasps of your onlookers.

And… and she doesn’t drop.

She murmurs something under her breath, almost like quiet prayer, and you burn. Lighting – visible arcs of lightning – light up along your arms, an electrical pulse far surpassing anything you could muster exploding through you from the point of contact. Blearily, through the sudden world of pain, you notice the tiny, neon blue polyps embedded along her hands, glowing fiercely with deadly eel-light, and then the shock throws you straight back against the wall.

You wheeze, pooling your will into your legs, and stay standing.

Jesus Christ, is that what it feels like when you give someone the ole’ tazerhands?

The mule stumbles back in clear fright. You can’t see her face, but her arms are held straight along her body, pointed right at the ground, fingers twitching back and forth neurotically, as if tending to the keys of an invisible piano. Your offensive wasn’t all that hurty, but it certainly seems to have scared the shit out of her.

“Nemea, Nemea…” She stutters, retreating back to her companion as if for safety. “Look at him! Look at him!”

“Aw shit.” Mutters her friend.

>Hail Satan!

Got to… Christ, this hurts… got to keep the advantage.

You slip into the background, the cold otherness of invisibility washing over you. You move quickly – you have to, you have to keep moving. You don’t know how long this creepy dino girl is gonna be preoccupied with hysterics. She’s making a good go at it, though – as soon as you disappear she turns to her companion and starts tugging her arm frantically, begging – seriously, begging – for the other girl to acknowledge something that apparently only makes sense to them.

“You saw him!? You saw that?!” Her teeth – her fangs – chatter in her mouth. “He – he – he”–

“Christ, yes, I saw it!” The dealer growls angrily, that weird, coppery bonestuff that comprises her claws spreading out over her hands, moving on up her arms, under her jacket, across her shoulders and abdomen and legs, until it covers the greater portion of her body. It’s… it’s strangely biological-looking, for a metal. Like steel emulating flesh and bone. “Geroff me!”

She shoves the other girl aside, and that’s when you strike.

You slam your fist up under her solar plexus, moving fast over the intervening distance. A fat, clear stream of stomach spittle and stomach acid sputters up between her lips, her eyes bulging in shock. Your knuckles complain loudly – you feel the blood blush through your skin. But you don’t stop.

Before you become visible, you slam her head straight into the opposite wall, and the volts flow from your palm. She shrieks, flaying her arms back and forth, before a lucky kick finally pushes the breath from your lungs and sends you sliding back a few feet.

“Bloody hell!” That's the lion-man-panther thing.

You fix your eyes on the mule, who is gripping her shoulders in her claws hands, mumbling under her breath in muddled oxymoron, and…

And she turns invisible.
>>
>>34657459
