The rhythmic clang of metal on metal echoes in the confines of the blacksmith's workshop, sounds layering in a ringing cacophony. The smith isn't tall- He's old, back bent and twisted with age. But he hammers relentlessly, and the cherry-glowing metal takes shape under his hands.

You stand in silence, waiting on him to finish. He finishes with three final notes, pounding an edge into the blade in his hands before dumping it into a wide well next to his anvil. The tongs he rests near the fire, and his hammer is placed reverently atop his anvil as he turns to face you.

Jin chirps a greeting before he can speak.
"Hello Mikhael!"
He directs a withering stare at the harpy, face concealed behind bushy brows and a raggedy, burnt beard.
"Bird, you know well that you aren't t'be coming in here. Too flammable b'half."
"I am staying away from the fire, yes."
"Sparks'll catch all the same. Leave the harpy at th'door, spinner."

Jin makes a few outraged noises, but hops down into the street nonetheless. You step into the cramped workshop, trying to ignore the wave of heat emanating from the forge.
"Good afternoon- I am Lyra."
The old man rubs at his bald plate, sizing you up. His eyes rove over your carapace, settling on the weapon strapped across your shell.
"Rivermetal n'darkwood? Didja carve it out of some lizard's poker, then?"
"I- uh, yes-"
"Not bad t'all. Bring more of the metal with you?"
"Yes, It's with the trader-"
>>
>>34623785
The old smith breaks into a wide grin, teeth shining beneath his dirty beard.
"Good, good. S'fun ta work with. Cold forgin's always a good time. What can I do for you, lass?"
"I- I need armour. I've got a note from the trader for whatever you need."
"Pretty much covered in armour, aren'tcha?"
"I'd like armour for the bits not covered, yes."

He cackles, turning to rummage through a pile of odds and ends beneath a wide workbench. He comes up holding a few heavy looking leather shirts, lines and numbers writ all over them.
"Lessee, lessee- You done growing, girl?"
"Hm. I don't think so? I'm not yet a month old."

He looks you over again, brows knitting together over his surprised expression.
"Not a month?" He interrupts himself with a bark of laughter. "Oh, yer Nia's blood alright. So the bird weren't telling tales at all."
He chuckles as he advances on you, discarding a few of the shirts.
"Lean down, whelp, so I can fit this. Arms up."

You sink down, putting your arms through the slots as he offers them. He circles you, cinching the shirt tight in different spots, muttering numbers and letters to himself as he works.
"If you don't mind- How do you know my mother?"
"Hah! Made halfa her gear. Fixed it too. She'd disappear for months, then turn up with half her bloody armour missing and an apology for all the spears she'd gone an broke. Made more money on your mother than half the bloody guild."

He loosens the shirt, pulling it free and double checking the markings before returning it to the pile.
"Shouldn't be too hard- Just double up on the straps, then. You'll haveta let it out yourself as you grow."
"Alright. I'm sure mom can help, too."
"It's just a question of whatcha want, then. And you'll be wanting to spin yourself a tunic t'go underneath."

>Ask for recommendations
He's the expert, see what he recommends.

The main requirement for us would be flexibility and freedom of movement. If our human half can't reach around to our spider half, or lean to the side, to extend over our limbs, we'd be handicapped.

Weight is a non-issue for us. Heat probably isn't an issue either. We can still lose heat through our huge spider half. Insulating our human half shouldn't make that much difference. I think.

It's weird to me we're only a month old, and we're dealing with humans.
It is also weird to me harpy kids are with human kids.
Do they age at the same rate? Do harpies grow slower than us? Do humans have accelerated childhoods too?
>>
>>34624325
Harpies age at the same speed as arachne- Full grown in 1-2 months, depending on type. Humans age at the regular speed, Elves age at human speed then slow to a crawl, dwarves age at human speed, but live longer and remain physically fit right up till their death. Dwarf corpses are like statues.

Mixed families must get awkward as fuck. Think about Jins Dad. One day he's holding a little ball of fluff, a newborn Harpy, in his hands. Six months later, she's a grown woman introducing you to her boyfriend (spider girlfriend?). A year later, she could be married. Then grankids could come along at any time.

It's only a few months before your grankids could be getting married themselves. Would fuck with your head.
>>
>>34624654
>(spider girlfriend?)
Part of the wing-girl arrangement is we also help find jin a man.
Possibly using web traps

Speaking of webs, we should ask the smith if he wants some silk or something for the work. If he needs any fabric components to hold everything together at all, that is.
We're not armorists.

"I- uh. I don't really know anything about armour. At all, yes? What kinds are there? Or, what kinds can arachne use?"

He's making a circuit of the shop, plucking ingots out of a small pile and casting them into the flame. He grabs the bellows, and with a strength that seems completely at odds with his age, hauls on it. The fire blazes, burning white hot, and the shop becomes a sweltering box, nearly unbearable.

He turns to face you as the metal starts to glow.
"There's a coupla options. We'll skip out on flat leather- You wouldna come to me if you needed that. You could work plates into a leather coat. It's decent enough, but there's plenty of gaps. A mail coat is solid- You'd really only worry about somthin small poking you, but you'd rattle like a chain in the wind. Full-plate or half-plate is solid. Weights not an issue for spiders. It's a matter a' preference. The only bit to really concern yerself with is helmets- They're a bloody mess with all yer eyes. Y'need an open face, or a visor, and it messes with your vision."

You try holding up your hands, blocking your lines of sight, or covering your eyes completely. Even seated, it messes with your balance, and skews your depth perception something terrible. Your lips curl into a frown.
"Nn. What kind of armour did my mom use? I've seen her weapons, but I don't remember her armour."
"Gah. She wound up wearing a bloody mish-mash. Breastplate, pauldrons, armguards, a bit of a skirt. Mixing whatever she pleased."

He eyes you again, judging.
"I got that old feeling again- You're gonna be the same kinda thorn."
The comparison brings a smile to your face.
"I think that's why she sent me to get armour, yes."
"Bah!"
>>
>>34625099
You spend a few moments considering your options, before you remember the rest of your cargo. Twisting, you pry the strapless buckler out of your pouch and present it.
"What about shields? Could you make anything out of this?"

He sneers at the metal.
"Garbage. Not even fit to melt- You'd be better off using your hands than tryin ta stop a blade with that. The hell'd you get scrap like that, anyway?"
"Kobolds, in the ruins."
"Gods, don't tell me you paid one of those muckrakers for it."
"No- they were hunting a child. I took it after I... dealt with them."

He nods, a fierce smile across his face.
"Good on ya. Don't go making deals with filth."
He pumps the bellows, a few times more, bringing the heat back, oppressive and heavy.
"If yer wanting a shield, of whatever kind, it's not a problem. We've even got a few stones in stock."
"Stones?"
"Elemental stones."
"I have no idea what those are."

He chuckles, then pulls a shimmering rock from a pouch, holding it up for you to see.
"There's little spirits in these- It's not quite enchantment, but you can add a bit extra to gear."
"Mhm."
"Now then- The fire's blazing, and I got work to be doing, lass. You made your decision?"

if nothing else we can wear the shield on our back/thorax like extra armor, or drop it whenever we need both hands for our glaive, as only the toughest things would need two hands since our strength is pretty ridiculous.

>Half-plate (Mom's)
>Buckler
>Water
>>
>>34625246
We've trained using the spear like a quarter staff. It's a far more deadly weapon when used in two hands. The shield is useful but I don't want to compromise our fighting style.

Maybe we can use the shield situationally?
>>
Funnily enough, the fire shield is ALMOST as handy as the water shield.
Firestarters are fucking useful.

The earth shield is third in usefulness, as shockwaves and tremors are kind of dangerous.
>>
>>34625124
>>34625193
If I can I would like to add
>If shield, then a buckler
Buckler is the only one we can reliably strap to our back without it getting in the way. We can't grab well from our spider half, and the kite would get in the way of our upper-body mobility.
>>
A buckler shield is normally held in the hand and is used to intercept attacks, where as a kite shield is attached to the arm and provides partial cover that can be shifted to better block and depending on the model leaves the hand open. So I don't think a buckler is a good call shield wise for us.

>>34625124

Glaives are two-handed weapons. We need something that will let us use both hands.

That sound extremely useful.

If he can, I vote for an Earth stone.

Fire protection you say ? Yes please!
>>
>>34625412
Bucklers are not designed to block arrows they are for blocking swords, if you want to block arrows you want a kite or tower shield, and a kite shield would leave the hand open and we could store it on our spider half.
>>
The most important consideration nobody is considering:
The kite shield is the only one with a "Spout", making it the perfect water source in our eventual cool house.
>>
>>34625343
I had assumed it was a forearm mounted buckler. You can get them mounted on your arm like a bracer. They are minimally effective a shields, but allow both hands free.

That's the type I wanted when I voted here >>34625365
>>
>>34625124
>Half-plate
>Water Buckler

Our inherent protection blessing should more than counteract any problems with a small shield, and we can't really use anything beyond a buckler due to our weapon of choice.

Also, how much water can the stone produce? Is it just a small amount, or can you go full on firehose knocking opponents down with a spray of water?
>>
>>34625474
A kite wouldn't leave our hand really free, it still covers over it afterall and get in the way of our glaives staff. A buckler can very well block a arrow, its not very good at it, but it would serve the purpose when it comes down to it, and it doesn't get in our way all the other times when we don't really need a shield.

Buckler can be strapped to the wrist or wielded one handed
Kite can also be strapped to your forearm, or wielded one handed.

>>34625604
Its a way to wear a buckler, but you can just as well mount it on your forearm, its not as versatile then, because you can obviously move your hand more than your arm, but since we already have a glaive and armored claws on our hands...

There's no hesitation when it comes to armour.
"Can you make me a set like mom's?"
The smith sighs, chucking a few more ingots into the blaze.
"Knew it. The same kinda pain. I'm too old for this, lass."

"So you can't?"
"Of bloody course I can! I'm the best damned smith for leagues! That don't mean I haveta like it!"
His display of pride brings a smirk to your face as he huffs around the forge, getting materials and readying his tools.
"An' before I go an' kick you out of my forge, d'you want a replacement for your scrap or not?"

"A buckler, please. With a water stone, yes."
He nods his approval, poking at the fire with his tongs, his hammer ready in one hand.
"Will you need any silk to make it?"
"Nah. Yer gonna want something to go beneath the armour though. Get a move on."

You nod, thanking the smith before reversing out the door. He calls out over the pounding of hammer on metal.
"Come back tomorrow, lass. My bones are old, but I work fast."
You shout a quick "I will!" through the door, turning to find Jin.

The harpy is on the roof- she's fluffed her feathers out to look bigger, and she's making her best attempt at a scowl. There's a minute of staredown; neither of you blinking or moving, before you straighten your legs, reaching up and snatching the harpy off the roof. She struggles a bit in your grasp, and you wind up holding the sulking bird in both arms in front of you.

"We could've gone in."
Her voice is petulant, a child who didn't get what they want.
"I am almost grown! I am not scared of fire."
"It's not a matter of being scared- feathers burn easily. What'd happen happen if you hurt your wings, yes?"
>>
>>34626529
She sighs dramatically.
"I am not a child."
"Of course you aren't. But you still have to be careful. I've grown, and I'm here buying armour because my mother said so."
She smiles a bit at that.
"Really?"
"She said if I was going to keep throwing myself at monsters, the least I could do was to make sure they choked when they try to eat me."

Her giggling is infectious, and it isn't long before she repents, and asks you to set her behind you. You oblige, and continue the stroll through the town.
"I'll be here until tomorrow- I have to wait for him to finish the armour. Why don't you show me around?"
She brightens immediately.
"Yes, yes! We can show you the town and our house and our nest! Come!"
She flaps twice, taking off and circling you excitedly.

You had to drain meals as a kid before your other teeth grew in. You can currently eat solid food.
>>
>>34626978
Including vegetables and all that ?
>>
>>34626994
You've only eaten meat so far.

Other creatures eat plants, and then you eat them.
It's the circle of life.
And also the circle of being a giant spider.

You can eat whatever the hell you want, though you will need some form of meat or another to keep healthy.
>>
>>34626920
yeah, a bit of a tour.
Also your players are hungry, and have money in their pocket.
>>34627088
>>34626994
vegetables are gross.
The best way to eat them is to wrap them in webbing, acid them up, and drain them.
>>
>>34626994
More importantly, what do we actually get noursihment from, even eating raw meat we still get all those fluids, while "prepared" meat will have at least lost a significant part of that.
Raw meat might actually be the only thing we get proper noursihment from, even if we can eat other things.
>>
>>34627176
don't worry, spiders cook their raw food all the time.
Though they use rapid oxidizing acids in a contained pouch.
>>
>>34627253
What?
>>
>>34627253
Thats not really the same thing as cooking it, in terms of what it actually does to the meat.
>>
>>34627267
Spiders eat food by injecting acid into things and slurping it up later.
It doesn't really matter whether it's cooked or not, since the level of denaturing that comes from cooking is pittance compared to acid, and would only be a problem if we need specifically denatured proteins, which is rare.
>>
>>34627318
The problem is that with cooking the nutrients leave the meat together with the water, which isn't the case with using acids to liquify the meat.
The denaturing isn't really a issue at all.
>>
>>34627318
Oh. I was thinking more expelling acids and igniting them in air.
>>
>>34627354
Well, that really depends on how it's cooked then.
A lot of the time juices are lost, some of the time they're reclaimed and re-used.
also captcha is being a butt, this conversation might die.
>>
>>34627366
Nature and science tend to avoid things like flammable acids.
Mostly because it would be horrible for everyone involved.
>>
You need a certain level of protein to maintain web production. As for regular nutrients- We'll just say you need a large amount of food. Raw meat is best, but eating other stuff just means you need to eat more to make up for it.

Unless you dash into a desert sans supplies, there will never be a point in this quest where I type
"And then you collapse from a lack of proper nutrition"
>>
>>34627488
TEND to avoid. TEND.
Doesn't mean its impossible.
Or a good idea.
>>
>>34627507
Oh, that's fine.
Just determining what we need to eat and what we like to eat are key to determining our tastes, which are then key to determining whether we bring a pie, a plate of nachos, or some meaty dip to the parties.
>>
>>34627511
it is in fact a terrible idea
Also a horrible idea are acids that turn into gasses
They're just horrible

Jin flits in every direction, calling your attention to each building, and making a whirlwind of introductions and laughter from the villagers. She really has spread your stories- half the people you meet are impressed. A few even want to shake your hand; although you're unsure if thats because they haven't met an arachne or if they're just amazed to meet you.

Names blur together more than a bit- Half the larger buildings are barracks, filled end to end with bunks for the local workers. As people pair off, the town pitches in to build a cabin, and the hamlet expands.

There's a few notable exceptions- A special stable for the local centaur, and the local guild's building is part administration, part bounty board, part barracks and part armoury.

Maybe there'll be something on the board that you can do later?

You wind up sharing a bit of candy with Jin. She settles on your back long enough to tear through the stick of rock candy, and you do the same. Jin is nearly euphoric with her first taste of sugar. You, on the other hand, are not nearly as enthused. It's definitely delicious- candi is something you've missed- but not as satisfying as a hunk of game.

Or you might just be hungry. It's hard to tell.

A few people manage to stick out enough that you actually remember them 2 minutes past their introduction.

Aaron, the centaur, is almost comically skittish; Even the smell of an arachne is enough to leave him jumpy for hours. He makes a whole body flinch when you try and shake his hand.
>>
I wonder if we can get a pure magic elemental stone.
One which will purely collect and store magic up to it's limit. Which we can then draw upon for our own use.
Or do those not exist?
>>

Outside the two guarding the wall, there's a small troop of adventurers in town. They apparently take all sorts of jobs, from the town, from the city, wherever. Retrieval of specific plants or animals, hunting feral monsters preying on the town, working as caravan guards. The middle aged hammer-wielding man gives a curt greeting and avoids you and Jin alike, but a young woman with strange eyes and a bow nearly her height is more than happy to swap stories. She goes by Lann- She claims she isn't fond of her family name, so she dropped it.

You wind up spending a few hours at the guild, the three of you chatting about the ruins, local monsters, even your precious few adventures. Lann has been across the continent- their guild has a line of wayhouses across the main road, and she worked her way through each. She's originally from a coastal city on the opposite side of the world- Instead of taking up fishing, she took up mercenary work.

When you leave the guild, the sun is starting to dip behind the treeline. And more importantly, your stomach is growling ferociously. You and Jin set about making plans for dinner.

>Head to the Inn- You've got money. Maybe they'll have enough food to feed you?
>Head to Jin's home, check in, and go hunting
>Send Jin home to eat with her family, catch something for yourself
>Other (?)

>>
>>34628153
Can we go to jin's home, check in, then go eat at the inn?

Paying for food is faster than hunting for it. Unless we get lucky.

Or we get lazy and just put a net into the river.
>>
>>34628153
>Head to Jin's home, check in, and go hunting
Jin needs more XP.
>>
>>34628153
>>Head to Jin's home, check in, and go hunting

Have Jin scout for something big. Kill big thing. Eat well with the Harpy family tonight.
>>
>>34628227
>Paying for food is faster than hunting for it.
Why waste the money ? We can easily hunt something a lot larger than what they offer as meals in an inn. We might as well ask Jinns family what they eat and bring something for everyone.
>>
>>34628301
>why waste the money?
It's burning a hole in my pocket, and apparently we're rich with silk.
>>
>>34628301
money doesn't have much value when you can almost literally shit it

but yeah, hunting is more fun
>>
>>34628345
No inns for you. Tonight... WE HUNT!
>>
>>34628381
You can never have too much money. And there is such a thing as oversupply, especially until they have actually attracted customers from further away.
>>
>>34628418
We don't really need any money unless we actually dedicate ourselves to one project or another.
And even then, we only might need some money.
>>
So the next morning can we ask how good river metal is, like on a scale from 1-10, 1 being shit 5 being like damascus steel 10 being holy shit!
>>
>>34628501
metal generally isn't just "good". Like, good for weapons might not be good for armor and such.

Though I imagine other than its water properties, it's pretty shit. I mean it's malleable without forging. Probably some soft metal.
>>
Spiders are all about family.
And food.
They are also very careful to not mix the two.
>>
You walk through town in the fading light, Jin leading overhead. You pass between cabins, heading for the edge of town, where a smattering of little log homes each sit next to towering trees.

A soft glow exudes from the glass windows as you trot up to the cabin- nearly an entire wall is covered by a pair of double doors. The handles give easily, and you pull them open, stepping into the warmly lit home. Jin's mother and sister are sitting comfortable on large pillows, the remains of their dinner decorating the table in the corner. Both look up as the two of you enter.

"Lyra! I was not expecting Nia to let you visit so soon."
You scratch at your cheek embarassedly.
"Ah, it was not so much that I was allowed to visit as that I was ordered to acquire armour."
The harpy eyebrows make a slow ascent as she smiles.
"Found yourself more trouble, then?"
"Mother did not approve of my hunting, yes."

Sefi stifles a laugh, and Lia makes no such effort, cackling at your embarrassment.
"Don't let her fool you- She was just as bad. She'd turn up in the village, doing work, heading into the ruins- and a day later her mother would show up, trying to find her. Too much wanderlust, and not enough responsibility."

She prods at you with one feather.
"At least she knows where you are. Even if she isn't happy about it."
"Mhm."
"Come here, both of you. Have a seat and chat before you run off again, yes?"

You stomach growls, and Jin's answers. You look at each other, and her mother bursts out laughing again.
"Alright, alright. Go get some food, little ones. We can talk later."
You both nod, and head back into the growing night, alert and ready to hunt.

BWUH

bu-huh?

well, I guess that's fine then. Be sure to archive!

As for questions, uh erm uhm. Can we even make clothing for ourselves yet? About how long does it take us if so? Are our eyes all independant?

It's cool REQM, fun thread even if it was short

See you next time

How strong are we? Strong enough to ward off an attack with a Tower Shield without budging?

How tough is our chitin?

How troublesome are doors?

Thanks for playing!
Sorry it was short, I honestly just ran out of notes. I thought I had more stuff ready.

>>34629806
You can anything simple without a roll. Complicated stuff will take rolls, using the heavily woven silk will just take more time. You made Jin's current clothing.

>>34629862
>>34629886
You're about six feet tall at ease, and can stand straight up to get to nearly ten feet. You're main size problem is the width of your spiderbutt- You need double doors to fit into human dwellings.
You'd be fully capable of bracing yourself to stay on your feet with a shield.

>>34629967
Ill see about sketching something out. Hopefully I haven't already contradicted myself in the quest.
>>
>>34629689
If Lyra and Sara teamed up, could they use magic to clear enough rubble from the entrance to ruin to let mom in?
>>
>>34630039
I think its more a problem of knowledge than power.
Practise twice, don't collapse the tunnel once.
>>
>>34629996
Is "archmagus spider" an evolution known to arachnekind?
>>
>>34630039
Lyra would need to be a lot better at earth magic than she is currently. And Sara's brand of magic would most likely collapse the pieces rather than move them.

>>34630084
Any monster specializing in magic will be given the opportunity to advance as a Half- spell lord, and then a full spell lord. They're characterized as being very human like, but with horns and a gem set into their forehead. They are also absurdly good at magic.
>>
>>34630132
Is Sara going to lose her spider-butt?

That would be sad, but I guess she could ride on our spider butt
>>
>>34630132
That reminds me, do have our next evolution(s) planned out, or will it be made per situation?
>>
>>34630132
Did the arachne scholars of old leave any medical texts that would provide biographies of notably evolved individuals? This is to provide an ic way to hint at the prereqs.
>>
>>34630162
No more spoilers for you.

>>34630172
I have a few in mind- But the focus is on what you do. I've basically set up an achievement system. As you vote, do things, succeed, whatever- I check off things. Then I base the evolution on what you've done.
>>
>>34630266
I hope you remember we wish to keep our spider butt.
>>
>>34630295
Ours will be the biggest spider butt of all. Never fear.
>>
>>34630331
>>34630295
People won't be losing their primary characteristics- I realized I'd typed out a half paragraph answer that spoiled all sorts of things, so I deleted it.
>>
>>34630416
On the one hand, telling us about prerequisites would help keep you honest. On the other hand, anon has been known to bitch relentlessly if anything less than a "perfect run" is perceived. We're trusting you reqm. don't fuck this up

just kidding we love you
>>
>are you done growing yet
Do we LOOK full grown?
Like, all adult and stuff? Or still child-y or teenager-y?
>>
>>34630695
Still a teenager. Your height has nearly filled out, but you're still growing.
