Ask Languid anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You’re no mathematician, but if you’re more than fifty percent demon, that means you’re getting demon from more than just your mom. “Wait,” you say, realizing the implications. “My dad couldn’t be part Verwelken. I’m pretty sure he didn’t disintegrate under sunbeams.”

“You don’t disintegrate either,” says Moriah.

“Yeah but I’m not that much made of shadow,” you say, squinting at your shadow-self. “I’m only like… okay, when you say I’m a little more than half demon, how much more are you talking about here?”

Moriah gives it a moment’s thought. “If I had to guess,” she says, “I would say you were three quarters demon, one quarter human. You could easily be less, though. Maybe something like sixty percent demon?” The unspoken thing though is that you could easily be more. But maybe it’s not that easy, though, given that you’re really not all that demony to begin with. At least, until recently.

You wave all of her statistics away. “That still doesn’t answer why my dad didn’t turn into ash on about a million separate occasions. I get that I kind of am more humanish than I have any right to be, but if he was like, half demon or something, shouldn’t he have been, you know, half-demon looking?”
>>
>>34608858

“I don’t know,” says Moriah. “Maybe his glamor protected him from sunlight?”

You snort. “That’d be one hell of a glamor,” you say.

“True. But he was Corithis’s consort,” Moriah tells you. “There aren’t many beings out there that could throw that kind of power around, but I think the Imperiate is a good candidate.”

Okay, so your mom was badass enough to do anything. Whatever. “All right,” you say hesitantly. “Let’s assume you’re right. Let’s say I’m like, mostly demon.” Skepticism creeps into your voice. “If I was mostly demon, shouldn’t I have like, been mostly demon from the get go? I mean, most of my demonyness didn’t start up until a few months ago. All it was back then was claws and being sunburned,” you say.

There’s a moment of silence as Moriah considers your question. Apparently it’s a good point. But it’s not a good enough point you guess, because Moriah answers it. “I think the reason you used to look more human is because your blood is diluted,” she says.

You don’t know if you like the sound of that, but you allow her to continue without interruption.
>>
>>34608881

“You’re part Infernus, you’re part Belphegoran, and you’re part Verwelken,” she says. “And on top of all that, you’re part human. Even if it’s an even spread, that means you’re no more than a quarter of each, and that’s not even enough for your bloodlines to show characteristics. You’re probably a little more Infernus than anything else, though. That’s why the first significant traits – the claws and the blood rage – showed up. That side was strongest at the time.””

“So why am I not red and covered in bone plates?” you ask. “Does human blood win by default or something?”

“Human blood doesn’t fight for dominance like demon blood does,” she answers. “It just is. Demonic heritage vies for supremacy. Without predomination, you didn’t really have a chance to develop demonically until recently.”

“But why now?” you ask. “Why not a year ago?”

“How much were you pushing yourself a year ago?” Moriah asks.
>>
>>34608895

You think you know where she’s going with this. Earlier you used your powers every once in a while, but it’s not like you were really flexing your demon muscles as much as possible. Your powers started getting out of whack since that time you freaked out in the shootout that got Benjamin killed. And ever since then, all the times you’ve gotten stronger – it was right after big fights where you either killed people or almost got killed, or right after you sucked up landwells, or when you’ve come into contact with crazy powerful magic. Either that or after weeks of pushing your limits from training with Ranthix or Isaac and Rowan and Borislav.

>So what you’re saying is that I’ve been neglecting my demon fitness.
>I’m like a Super Saiyan then? Every time I get beat up or beat somebody else up I get stronger? Because that’s kind of awesome.
>Okay. Then pretty much I’m going to get wings soon, right? Rowan has wings and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous a little bit.
>Give me your professional demon and also a wizard sorceress person opinion. Is it… you know, actually a good idea for me to keep pushing my limits?

What a coincidence Languid, I've been moving into a new apartment and having internet troubles, too!
>>
That guy who drew Ranthix made a Moriah.
>>
“So what you’re getting at is that I’ve been neglecting my demon fitness,” you say.

Moriah lets that summation slide. “Not exactly in so many words,” she says. “Your bloodlines all started weak, individually, but they’re all still fighting against one another. Anytime you stretch yourself in any way, your demon sides are going to use that power to try to gain dominance.”

“Okay,” you say, nodding to yourself and trying to compute the information. “I guess that makes a little bit more sense than it did before, maybe. So pretty much I’m getting wings soon, right? Because Ro has wings, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t maybe a little bit jealous.” Will your wings wind up being like bat wings? Or will you have like, cool black feathers? Or are you thinking about this the wrong way?

“If this keeps up, you will get wings sooner or later,” says Moriah, cautiously.

You note her skittishness about the idea. “What’s the thing you’re not saying?” you ask.

She’s reluctant to answer. “You’ll… probably get other things before you get wings,” she says quietly.

Something about the way she feels about this topic makes you feel uneasy. You feel like she’s trying to tiptoe around your power trip fantasies, but if there’s something you need to know, you’d rather know it. “Look,” you say. “Give me your professional demon wizard sorceress person opinion. I know getting more stronger is like, kind of cool and stuff, but do you think… like, it’s actually a good idea to try to push my limits?”

Again, there’s some conflict going on with Moriah, but you can’t figure out the specifics even with your ESP sixth sense BS. “I would be careful,” she says. “Training with your friends… that should be okay. But don’t be reckless. I think… with how your body works… there are things you won’t be ready for if you force it.”

You snicker to yourself. Heh. Things. “That’s what she said,” you say.

Moriah shoves her hands in her pockets, a little cross with you. “Come on, Sierra. I’m being serious.”

You scowl a little at yourself and maybe at her too. “I know, I know,” you say, pushing up off of your tree-root seat bench. “But really. I don’t have much a choice. I just get pulled into a lot of things,” you say. “Sooner or later whatever’s going to happen’s going to happen, and you dancing around it’s not going to help. I’d rather you just like, tell me straight up if you’re privy to some deep secret.”
>>
>>34610955

Moriah sighs, and lets her ghostly light dissipate into nothingness. “I’m worried,” she says. “You take to everything so naturally. I know you like it when people are afraid,” she says softly. “I see you get distracted. And you have an urge to hurt things now,” she adds. You feel the sickly sweet edges of her fear from where you stand, mingled in equal part with uncertainty. “When you start knowing instinctively how to hurt everyone around you,” she continues. “When you start to really, really like causing pain, just because. All it’ll take is for you to stop paying attention.” She pauses, seeming disheartened. “I don’t know if I’ll like that version of you,” says Moriah, albeit reluctantly. “I don’t want you to lose who you are.”

“Neither do I,” you reply, resolution in your voice. “All this stuff hasn’t changed me, and it’s not going to change me. Human, demon, whatever. I’m me no matter what. Sure I might pick up a few quirks, but I’m not going to let that turn me into a jerk.” You chuckle at the absurdity of the idea. “So why don’t we forget about all this emo crap and you show me some magic stuff?”

Your optimism seems to lighten Moriah up a couple shades. “Okay,” she says.

The rest of the night is spent with you, Borislav, and Moriah trading around arcane secrets and also telling you that you need to practice more often.

You free Reeber to dash inside the house while you put your bike away in the garage. There’s going to be some awesome firework show tonight that the family’s going to go to and do and stuff, so definitely there’s no missing that. But the other thing that you’re not really looking as much toward is meeting with Frederick about his definitely not domestic terrorism scheme, whatever the heck it is. In fact you should probably get to organizing all of that junk before you fix up your meeting with him.

>Go pester Rowan about inviting her boyfriend to fireworks.

You head inside, popping into the sewing room to say hello to Cassandra before you hop upstairs and break into Rowan’s room, finding her nearing the end of her huge book and still in PJs. You flop down in the beanbag chair by her bed. “Why don’t we ever hang out in my room?” you ask.

“There’s nowhere to sit in your room,” Rowan says, fighting to put the book down.

“What’s wrong with the floor?”

“That’s the problem,” she says, laughing. “There is no floor to sit on.”

“So I could organize a little. Put that mushroom out on the nightstand for aesthetic purposes. Then how about it?”

“Then we could hang out in your room,” Ro answers, sitting up to get a better look at you. “My room’s got the beanbag chair though.” You can tell she doesn’t believe you have it in you to clean your room. After all, her room’s perfectly good enough for all clean-room needs.

“You know, maybe I will just because you don’t think I will,” you tell her. Not that there’s any reason to be hasty about it. “Maybe I’ll buy a beanbag chair and then I’ll be the one who lays on my bed in my PJs and you’ll be the one relegated to the chair,” you say, not sure if you’re really threatening her or not. “Anyway. You invite Red Hood to our ultra traditional family gathering? Isaac and Cass would just love that.” You smile sharply. “Isaac’s probably going to want to know about his intentions with you.”
>>
>>34612766

“Please no,” Rowan says, blanching at the idea. You can tell from her disgust that she actually has invited poor William. “Dad’s not that lame,” she tells you.

“Of course Isaac’s not lame,” you protest. “He’s… just from another era. A really lame era. Actually scratch that, because he’s from the Nazi-fighting era.” That era’s not lame at all. “Anyway, you’re like, his little cherry blossom girl and all that. He’s totally going to give him one of those menacing fatherly talks.”

Rowan rejects your vision of reality. “I’ll tell him not to,” she says firmly.

So, just wanted to remind everyone that the Verwelken Hellborn that Isaac had to put down back in the day after giving him a second chance was our dad. His reason for living and sanity got pulled out from under him, and he had his second run-in with Isaac after he was too beaten down to offer emotional resistance to being put out of his misery.

On a semi-related note, I'm hoping he was a landmaster. On one side of the family, we're Imperial Infernus/Belphagoran, and on the other we're Verwelken Hellborn Landmaster.

Now, we've been adopted by a family of angelic magic-police.

Rad.

>>

>So, just wanted to remind everyone that the Verwelken Hellborn that Isaac had to put down back in the day after giving him a second chance was our dad.
That hellborn was never specified as Verwelken. It was just referred to as a hellborn, we never learned what type of demon he came from.
>>
>>34613256
A police sniper. Cass used to be a cop, Isaac is a cop who fights magic nazis, Ro moonlights as batman-police, we were a black ops cop, and so forth. Magic-police.

Except Harvey.
>>
>>34613284
>That hellborn was never specified as Verwelken. It was just referred to as a hellborn, we never learned what type of demon he came from.
No, he specified that it was a Verwelken.
>>
>>34613289
Harvey is gonna grow up and be a social worker.
>>
>>34613232
So... what you're saying is we need to find out our new dad killed our old dad and have an emotional break down and go berserk?
>>
>>34613316
No, he specified that Lionel was killed by a Verwelken around the same time. The hellborn was never described beyond "hellborn".
>>
>>34613345
He definitely did specify that the hellborn he tried to give that second chance to was half Verwelken.

Even if the hellborn Isaac put down was Verwelkan, it's a huge leap to assume it was our dad.

true but it is a still very high chance we have been told that verwelken hellborn are pretty rare
>>
>>34613365
No, he didn't.

Here's every single time Languid has ever said 'Verwelken' with his trip on.

Here's the part where he talks about that hellborn guy
>http://archive.moe/tg/thread/32008063/#32012006

Notice that 'Verwelken' never even gets said until after that part.

He also never talks about that hellborn guy again after the first time.

If I'm wrong, feel free to prove me wrong by posting the part where Isaac says, or even implies, that the hellborn guy was a Verwelken. I'll own up to being a wrong faggot if you do.
>>
>>34613468
Sure, it's a huge leap in realistic terms. But in story/narrative terms, it's obvious as fuck. The guy just lost his wife/lover/whatever and one of his two daughters in a really fucking horrific assassination. He barely managed to get his surviving one to safety, with the knowledge that being around her will probably draw attention to her that'll get her killed either. So, he falls into a bad situation, too emotionally wrecked not to.

And along comes Isaac, offering him a release in his darkest hour, an ending to a life gone wrong.

New dad kills real dad, not understanding what his actual situation was, because despite how good Isaac's been to us, that's still what he is.

It's got a really blatant narrative symmetry to it, with just enough foreshadowing to boot.
>>
>>34613535
I think it would be a pretty great reveal.

So is this what happens when we trip into rage mode?
>>
“I think the best you can hope for right now is that they don’t do the talk in the basement,” you say. “You know. The basement fallout bunker full of guns and paramilitary survivalist crap.”

Rowan groans. “He wouldn’t,” she says.

You, however, aren’t so sure. You give her a disquieting smile. “Of course not,” you say.

There’s a moment of silence before Rowan replies. “He totally is,” she says flatly.

“You betcha,” you say.

Rowan scowls and throws a pillow across the room. It hits the wall and flops lifelessly to the floor. “He’s going to scare him off,” she says, growling to herself.

“Lighten up. It’s not the end of the world,” you say.

“It will be for another couple years unless the planets align,” says Rowan. She frowns and lets her halo pop into view. She usually keeps her wings tucked in because most of her clothes don’t work with wings. “You know how lucky I am that I happened to meet somebody who happens to be okay with being dwarfed by their girlfriend?” she asks. “There actually aren’t that many guys that are okay with somebody who’s A, taller than they, B, stronger than they are, and C, somebody who has more wings than they do.”

“I thought he didn’t know about part C,” you say.

“He doesn’t, but the point is point C doesn’t matter if they can’t get past A and B,” she says. “That’s a percentage of a percentage of a percentage – AKA, nobody anywhere.”
>>
>>34613957
“I think you’re downplaying wings,” you say. “That’s more a plus than a minus. Especially super soft huge feather wings.”

Rowan sulks.

“Whatevs,” you say, snorting at her. “You already call the meeps? And by meeps, I mean friends. And by friends, I mean -”

“I know who you mean,” Ro says, cutting you off. She’s still in a bad mood.

Hm. This may be partially your fault. But also it’s just facts with Isaac being Isaac, so she might as well start getting used to it now than be surprised. “Are they coming?” you ask.

“Vikrama said her family’s going too,” says Rowan. “Baron was looking for something to do with his friends – he latched onto the idea when I asked him about it.”

“About that,” you say. “You got any details on the firework thing tonight? Because all I know is that we’re going.”

“We do the same thing every year,” she says. “You go down on to the piers and there’s a huge concert, and there’s a barge out on the bay, and they launch a ton of fireworks off to music. It’s like, the most fireworks you’ve ever seen.”

You’re not so sure you believe that. “I’ve seen a lot of fireworks in my time,” you say, dubious.

“Whatever. You’ll see,” Rowan tells you. “Oh – and I overheard Dad on the phone with the Magister. I guess Moriah’s family’s coming too?”

Whoah whoah whoah. Now that’s news. “So everybody we know is coming?”

“Sounds like it,” says Ro.
>>
>>34613976

“Wow.” You recover from being stunned to ask something else. “Hey, uh. By the way. I have to meet with that freedom fighting terrorist today.” The one that looks kind of good in sweaters. “You want to come along just in case interdimensional battle mages show up to crash the party? I was going to see if Isaac would come too, but I think he's actually coming no matter what I say.”

“Actually while you were out riding around, I think it was decided that we’re all coming,” Rowan answers. “Something about not trusting illegal immigrants farther than you can throw them.”

>You’re joking right now. Isaac did not seriously say that.

>Oh uh. Really? Because I mean, one or two is probably enough.

So wait, did we actually learn anything for sure about Sierra's dad? Currently we think he may have been Veywalken hellborn yes? Because I was thinking, what if when Ranthix talked about Meckor referring to our father as our Mom's assassin he meant it literally, as in our father was an assassin under the employ of our Mother? Does that make sense?
>>
>>34614557
That's.. an idea.
>>
>>34614517

Longer feet is cheating

Also, according to this thing, http://pastebin.com/rNg3Yw8m, Sierra is 5'10 (~178 cm). Rowan's height isn't on there, but I'll throw you a bone. She's taller at around 6'2 (~188 cm).
>>
>>34614557
That could imply:
>He was an assassin in her employ
>He directly killed her
>His actions/presence indirectly caused her death
>>
>>34614557
People have brought up the theory that dad was an assassin working for her before, but I don't think Meckor's words are proof. 99% chance he was just being melodramatic and screaming shit while trying to sound metal. Dude was just blaming dad for her death most likely.

You don’t giggle often, but when you do, it’s at racist jokes. You can’t keep down a snort, either. Graciousness isn’t your strong suit. “He did not say that,” you say, calling her bluff. She has to be joking.

“He said something like it,” Rowan replies, smiling. “I’m taking him out of context. That’s allowed, you know.”

“Right,” you agree, still laughing to yourself. Filthy immigrants. “Anyway, I guess I’m not going to argue with all the magic police staking out my high stakes meeting, so long as you don’t scare Derek away.”

“He won’t even know we’re there,” says Ro. “This isn’t our first rodeo.”

“Yeah,” you say slowly, smiling. “Well so long as you’re coming, you should be decked out to the gills. You’d better be in rollerblades and have flipping Aleopher spirit sword of justice in your back pocket, because I swore a vow that I’d never not have swords when I need them ever again.”

“You heard me, I said shut up,” you say, folding your arms over your chest. You’re not entertaining the circus today.

“We’re coming prepared,” Rowan says, still grinning. “I really hope either this guy or the people that want him dead try something, because it’ll go our way, fast.”

Having a bunch of demonbane at your back is good for business, especially when your business is not getting caught off guard by wizards. “Even so,” you say, “I’d rather not have anybody try anything so I can employ my master information gatherer skills.”

“Right,” Ro says. “I’m not saying I really hope anything happens. I’m just saying, hypothetically if it did, we would hypothetically beat the crap out of everyone.”

>Yeah… right.
