This is a starcraft 1 based quest. I generally try to follow lore and game, but I'm not an encyclopedia and haven't read any of the books. For weaponry and powers I’m not always going to strictly follow canon. This gives me greater freedom to allow character customisation and diversity.

I use D20, best of first three rolls, 1 and 20 are crits and cancel each other out. Skills will adjust DC, not give bonuses, for simplicity's sake. Health is narrative based on the game.
The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
>>
>Last time on Freelance Ghost Quest: You go and talk to a probe, continue your training by possessing a protoss, and make a long distance psionic phone call to Quartus. Two weeks go by until you are called to join a new expedition to the Xel’naga Worldship. You noticed your buddy probe and went aboard the same shuttle, where you started talking to its engineer.

“Hey, excuse me!” Someone taps you on your shoulder. You turn around to find a protoss engineer looking at you. “Would you mind not disturbing that probe? I just found a few errors in its AI core and was about to fix it.”

“Well he did seem a bit depressed earlier…”

The protoss rolls his eyes. “That’s exactly the problem, they’re not supposed to be able to feel anything like that.”

“So fixing it won’t hurt him?” You eye the probe, number 06839. It seems to hover around a bit aimlessly.

“Hurt? It’s a robot, it can’t feel anything. and I can’t afford to get a rogue AI on the loose. Now could you move? I’ve got a job to do” He starts pushing you to the side, but you don’t fully yield just yet.

“You mean they’re not sentient?” You glance at 06839. “He seemed to have a personality of his own.”

“It. It’s own. And that is exactly the problem. I’m not sure how it formed, but that personality has to go.” He worms himself past you, presses a dial on a handheld device, and the probe powers down.

>1. Stop him. The probe is sentient, this is as good as murdering it.
>2. Let him. An AI like that could be highly unpredictable and dangerous.

The protoss looks at you funny. “Dying? You are a strange man, terran.” He ponders for a moment.
“I’m not sure there’s anything you could do for me, and we do need enough probes now on the ship. I’m sorry human. I suppose I could make a backup of its current state for you if you want. You’d need to find something to upload it to, but I suppose you could arrange something with the High Templar.”

“That sounds like an excellent idea.” You extend your hand to the protoss. Confused, he looks at it, as if trying to guess what to do with it. “You shake it. It’s a terran gesture of trust and agreement.”

“Ah. Very well.” He takes your hand and awkwardly shakes it, very much unlike any terran handshake. He goes to work on 06839, and after fifteen minutes or so, he hands you a small metal chip with a crystal in the middle.

“There. That should be enough to reconstruct its personality in most systems.” You thank him and head to a less crowded area in the shuttle. It doesn’t take long before you arrive at the worldship, and you soon find the High Templar again.

Together with him and a few of his acolytes, you head for the chamber around the central crystal while he explains the procedure to you.

“We first have to repair some more systems and stabilise the broken parts that cannot be fixed. We’ll be overseeing the operations from here until everything is finished. In the mean time I would want you to question the entity in the crystal about its goals a bit more. Once everything is in place, you may activate it, and we’ll see how it goes from there.”

Once you arrive, you immediately feel the pressure to activate the symbol again, and the closer you go to the console, the stronger it gets. You manage though, and start talking to the crystal.

>How do you go about asking it?
>1. what are your goals?

"Are you aware of your malfunctioning parts, can you know if activating you is safe?"

You feel the presence pulsate for a moment before a reply comes. It feels like... Reactivation is its priority. All else must wait until after it is active again. Or so it thinks.

"What are your goals?" You continue to probe its 'thoughts'. The reply is hazy. There seems to be some underlying goal, but it is mostly overwritten by reactivation.

"What are, or rather, were your masters' goals?" That triggered something, you see...

* You see stars pass you by.*
* You see planets age from a newformed molten rock to verdant orbs full of life.*
* You see creatures evolve in the blink of an eye.*
* You see a spark inside a creature. It is so small, but you can still see is shine, shimmer, call out to you.*
* You see a creature. It is beautiful. You cannot fully make out its features or why it is so, but you see it is good.*
* You see the spark inside the creature growing until it shines brighter than the sun in the sky.*
* You see the amazing creature continue to evolve. Its body, its form, becomes perfect.*
* You see now, that the spark and the perfect creature merge, creating something so blindingly perfect that you cannot help but stand in awe.*
* You see the creature, perfect in both form and essence. It shines so brightly that it hurts...*

"AARRRGGHHH!"

A searing pain flashes in your mind. When you come to, you find Ur'athan and his acolytes crowd around you. "Are you ok, Artemis?"

“Was I out for long?” You ask. The High Templar gestures his acolytes to move back a bit and he helps you up.

“About ten minutes. You suddenly collapsed while grasping at your eyes. What happened?”

“It showed me a weird vision.” You tell the protoss of what you saw, and the more you say, the more his face darkens.

“It is as I feared. The stories of old are true then. You see, the Xel’naga… uplifted us. They saw in us a purity of form, and strove to create the perfect being from us. We rebelled at one point and they retreated from our world, never to be seen again. However, there is a theory amongst our scholars that the Zerg have been touched by them in a similar way, and that they contain the other half of what the Xel’naga were looking for. Purity of essence. Now, from what we have found, there does not seem to be any kind of experiment on this on the ship, or if there was, it did not survive the ages.”

That’s a lot to take in. And if what you gathered from the vision is correct, then they wanted to make a mixture of… The zerg and the protoss? What a strange hybrid that must be…

“I am beginning to have second thoughts about reactivating this crystal. Everything should be in our control once it starts, but there is still the risk of something unexpected happening.” Ur’athan looks at you, as if you have the last say on the issue.

“Well, it's your salvage and your call.” You tell him. You rub the back of your head for a moment. Your helmet protected you from most of the fall, but it still stings a bit. “I must say that it seemed awfully enthusiastic about possibility of being reactivated, but without much foresight. Or at least willingness to share it.”

“I think we can take the risk. My people are spread around the section in case anything goes wrong.” The High Templar glances upwards to the crystal.

“Do you think the ship is programmed to do something to the planet below?” You interrupt his train of thought. “Maybe it would be wise to have people there ready to evacuate or evacuated already if we reactivate the vessel.”

“A good idea. The vessel is in a geostationary orbit and far enough from the outpost but… Better secure than sorry, is it not you terrans say?”

“Safe than sorry, but yeah, we do.” You tell him. He touches a dial on his arm and closes his eyes for a moment. A minute or so later, he opens them and starts talking again. “Everything is in motion. They will need half an hour to prepare.
>>
——

Half an hour later, Ur’athan finally nods to you. You head to the dais, which immediately lights up. The presence in the crystal seems eager to give you another push, but you don’t need it. You press the symbol that has been aching in your head for a while now.

For a short moment, nothing happens, and you catch yourself holding your breath. You almost want to try and push it again when the four spikes that had sporadically been sending out a beam to the crystal burst to life. Green sparks fly everywhere but after a few seconds, they finally catch on and solid beams of light fly out of it and into the crystal.

At that point, a lot of things happen at once. In the distance, you hear an explosion. Several even, and the whole ship shakes. For a moment, it feels as if you are pressed against the floor, and it takes all your strength not to fall down. Some protoss around you weren’t so lucky and do fall down. The crystal starts glowing much stronger, bathing the entire area in a dark green light. It gives everything an eery look.

The shaking stops. Those that fell down carefully gather themselves and stand up again. “Status report!” You feel Ur’athan speaking to all the men on the ship.

One of the protoss next to him runs to him with a small holoprojector showing a projection of the ship. The front segment seems to be floating a lot further from the rest than you remember. “The front section separated from the rest. The explosions ripped loose what little support it had. The rest of the ship is falling to the planet.”

“Is the outpost in danger?” The High Templar asks his subordinate.

“They should not be, High Templar, but the resulting dust cloud from the impact might make it difficult for us to return any time soon.”
>>
“Define soon! We-“ At this point, Ur’athan is cut off. Something flares in the back of your mind. You feel the presence in the crystal, a lot more strongly than before. It expands itself until it touches the outer reaches of this section of the ship, and suddenly, you feel as if you are having the earlier vision again. It blinds you. The same strange radiance of the creature it showed you is coming from the centre of the crystal. It almost overwhelms you, but you manage to throw it off. You seem to be the only one though. All the protoss, even the High Templar, have collapsed.

You notice a few things though. The radiance is nowhere near as powerful as in your vision though. And it still seems to be coming from inside the crystal. You look upwards and you through the glow you can now make out a tiny spot in the middle of the crystal. You judge it might roughly be the size of a human child.

*RELEASE ME*

It echoes in your mind. You cannot seem to cut it off, but it no longer has the binding will behind it when it tried to make you activate the crystal. And from its command, you figure it’s stuck. You might have some more time.

"What exactly are you? And how the hell are you the culmination of life?”

*I AM PERFECTION*
*I AM PURITY OF FORM AND PURITY OF ESSENCE COMBINED*
*I AM SUPERIOR TO ALL*

Well, whatever the case this thing is full of itself. You can stand to talk to it a bit more and buy yourself some time. At least, you hope it’s buying time. “Evolution doesn't stop, there's always something that needs to be improved there is no such thing as perfection or culmination when evolution is concerned."

*I AM THE END OF EVOLUTION*
*I AM EVOLUTION’S FINAL GOAL*

“Well does evolution’s final goal have a name?” This seems to phase it a bit. It doesn’t immediately goes out and spouting about how it’s the best thing since evolution. When it does reply though, it’s much of the same again.

*I AM PERFECTION*
*I NEED NO NAME*

You start looking around the place. The four conduits firing beams into the crystal seem to be anchored into the building you’re in, and you head over to a wall where one should be. You manage to pull off a metal plate, but everything inside is wires and tiny crystals. They really liked their crystal it seems. And perhaps it might be best to not suddenly depower the thing the creature is stuck in for now.

“But if you are the culmination of life, what is your purpose, other than perfection? And how can you not see another point of view, nor explain your actions? I see no perfection here.”

*YOU ARE BUT A FOOLISH LIFE-FORM DESTINED TO BE ABSORBED OR ERASED*
*YOUR PATHETIC MIND CANNOT UNDERSTAND PERFECTION*
*BUT SOON ALL WILL BE ERASED AND ONLY PERFECTION WILL REMAIN*
>>
Well, it seems to want to eradicate all life other than itself. How quaint. You head back towards the dais, but instead of the earlier keyboards, only one symbol appears, and the hologram of the crystal is replaced by a strange looking face. You can clearly see the protoss traits, but it has an insectoid quality to it that reminds you of the zerg.

You immediately rule out pushing the button, but before you can do much else, you hear a groan from behind you. You turn around and find Ur’athan pulling himself upright.

You immediately take on a defensive stance. If this creature is powerful enough to knock them out psionically, they might be compromised too. Whatever the temple on Lahan II did must have protected you from the worst of it. Cautiously, you call out to him.

“Are you alright, templar?"

“Artemis? What happened?” You cautiously probe his mind and find his defences to be battered but not broken. You try to push a bit deeper, but he suddenly becomes much more alert.

“Artemis? What are you…” At that moment he catches sight of the glowing crystal. “Oh. That happened. Quickly, how long was I out, what has happened since then?”

He seems to be himself. You drop your defensive stance and start explaining. “You’ve been out for about five or ten minutes. That thing over there,” You gesture over your shoulder, ”knocked everyone out but me. I’m fairly sure it’s that hybrid thing you mentioned, but it seems to be stuck in the crystal for no-“

*RELEASE ME*

It shrieks through your mind. It’s half psionic shouting and half psychic attack. You’re fine though, but you shoot a worried glance at Ur’athan who fell back to his knees. He gets up pretty fast and nods to you though.

“Soooo… Any thoughts?” You say.

“We must destroy it, but we can’t risk it getting loose. Have you tried the console-“

“Only one button and that thing’s face hovering over it. No way I’m pressing that.”

“A wise decision. Damaging the crystal or sabotaging its power supply might accidentally release it, so we’d need something that instantly destroys both the crystal and the creature.” The High Templar descends into thought.

We still haven't named her by the way. Just calling her "Omega" leaves bad taste.

How about:
Retirement plan
Retirement benefits
Severance (my personal favourite)
Phoenix
Sanctuary
New Beginning
Darkstar
Ember
(mandatory) She's one of ours, sir.

indeed, crashing it on the planet...
not the sun, nor shall we spend days trying to cut through the hull of a battleship because that airlock simply ain't big enough

You've been spending some thought on this matter...
maybe call it Yamato.
The enemy might assume that we actually have a yamato cannon

This old thread was all about ridiculous sci-fi ship names.

“I get the feeling this thing won’t die so easily. High Templar, I’m afraid we’ll have to abandon the whole ship. Make it follow the other sections and crash on the planet.” The High Templar looks around to his fellow protoss. Some of them are slowly coming to, and you quickly check but they seem to be free of any psionic influence of the thing too.

“I’m afraid you’re right. I’m afraid my expedition doesn’t have much in ways of destructive power aside from my own, and I am loathe to test my power against this creature if it knocked me out so easily. We will have to get all of my people out of here.”

You nod and start helping protoss upright while Ur’athan psionically addresses all the conscious people spread around the section and tells them to return to the shuttle with all the equipment they brought.

*THERE IS NO ESCAPE*
*THE CRYSTAL IS YIELDING*

A sudden flash emanates from the crystal. It doesn’t seem like anything will happen any time soon, but you can spot a few tiny cracks starting to appear on its surface. You run out, carrying the last unconscious protoss in the building with you until you’re halfway to the exit and he finally wakes up. You simply tell him to run to the shuttles and head back to Ur’athan, who is overseeing the evacuation.

Half an hour later, most protoss have left. “I have told my men at the outpost to evacuate just to be sure. We might have to wait a day or two before we can land though.” A small bleep interrupts him. “It seems everyone is almost out. Let us leave.”

As you arrive back at the tunnel towards the shuttles you find the last protoss in the vessel crowding around it, waiting until there is room to go on. Behind you, you start hearing cracking, and there are now large and visible cracks on the crystal. By the time you enter the tunnel, the ship is starting to shake again. Here and there, pieces of the ceiling start falling down, but the tunnel still holds.
>>
You exit the tunnel last, right behind the High Templar, and rush towards the shuttles. As the doors behind you close, you can hear a very loud shattering sound.

*I AM FREE*
*PREPARE TO BE ERASED*

You quickly jump into the last shuttle still on the ship. The others have already lifted off. The moment the door closes behind you and the shuttle has lifted off, you see Ur’athan fiddle with a handheld device. On a wall next to him the Xel’naga ship is projected, and you see a small blue glowing form standing on the platform you left only moments before.

*I WILL END YOU*

Suddenly, dozens of small teal lights across the floating section of alien ship switch off, and another few dozen start glowing harder. On closer inspection it seems that the High Templar intentionally destabilised the ship so it would fall out of orbit. And that it does. What used to keep the ship steady now pushes it down faster than it would fall on it’s own, and you watch in awe as the colossal piece of ship hurtles down through the atmosphere. Moments later, a large green dome of energy forms on the planet surface. An explosion far outstripping terran nuclear weapons. A sudden headache pops up as an agonised shriek pierces your forehead and then suddenly stops. The protoss around you seem to have felt it too.

A few hours later, when the air has cooled down enough to allow the protoss observers to enter the area, you can see the aftermath of the explosion. What little is left of the ship is now a smouldering pile of slag. Nothing could ever have survived that, even if it kept calling itself perfection.

I suddenly realised you didn't have to roll a single thing this thread
And right after that I realised that that was probably a good thing for your survival rate
