With the sound like a log suddenly catching flame, a shimmering hexagon of white light suddenly burns itself into being in front of her. There's something incredibly nauseating about looking at the light, like it simply shouldn't be there if that makes any sense.

"The first few words you speak like this…" Eriadne is a really good teacher. It gets a bit tricky once she asks me to imagine a series of shapes while speaking, and then even worse as she begins to fuss over even the smallest details of my hand positions, but I just grit my teeth and pay attention. Nobody likes a slacker.

I'm used to this, this isn't worse than being thoroughly pummeled on the training yard. Though I suspect what will hurt after this will be only my head and hands rather than my whole body, so by that standard, it's easy.

Evangelyne and Sora seem to have started to be interested as well, at least as far as I can tell while not losing sight of Eriadne's teachings.

Finally, it's time to put all together.

It seems daunting having to explain it to everyone at first, but quickly my training catches on and I begin. Calm and rational, just like I learned, making sure to use all those big words I heard Pa say.

Eriande, Evangelyne, Thalia, Erato and I form two reconnaissance teams searching the complex from top to bottom and vice versa respectively. Meet-up is on the next clock strike in our room. "Everyone, let's go". I push back my chair, throwing a last, longing glance towards my abandoned dinner and go ahead, Evangelyne and the Twins close behind.

For a while we walk and talk, then split off at the next intersection as Eriadne catches up, stately gliding besides me like a leaf upon the breeze. If only I didn't always feel so awkward compared to her!

For a while we walk silently, and I can feel myself relaxing. It's probably really strange, but somehow it feels comforting just being silent together. Back home that would probably have been awkward, but with her it's just calming. I guess being a Witch really does change you as a person.

The screaming is heard from somewhere around the next bend corner. Eriadne returns my questioning gaze with a green-eyed one of her own, shrugging as she begins to sprint with surprising quickness, my own legs pumping to keep up.

There, a pair of young women is standing on both sides of a short, much younger girl, trying to calm her down as she tries to stand while fighting them off, her angry behavior being somewhat ruined by just how hard she's working to keep her balance.

Wait, isn't that the girl that stared at Helena during the selection? Maybe she-- wait. Wait. Take a step backwards and think. If they have a history together it would be stupid to bring that up now. Still, she probably needs help.

"Uh, excuse me?"

"WHAT IS IT, CREATURE?" She Whirls on me and almost falls, the Witch to her right just managing to steady her. Uh. Just stay calm and pretend she's drunk. You know how to handle drunks.

"Do you need help? I could bring you to a healer".

"That shall not be necessary, as I was about to go there already". Normal volume, nice.

"She wasn't". The left witch shakes her head and sighs.

"And even then, we'll probably have to carry you". The right one adds.

"Listen, Maria. You're kind. But don't let that become a trap to you". With that, she walks off, half-carried by the two older girls.

I'm well aware of my lack of anything approaching decent pace. I'll keep it brief as it's not your fault, but the same thing that currently makes me run this also keeps me from speeding up right now. Mind state's not a good one right now. Working on that, but AToW helps keep me sane-ish.

That's hard. I really like both, even though I only met them today. Curse you Eriadne, why do you have to make me choose?! Having decisions like this forced on you should be criminal! And what do you mean with "Nothing grand?!" This almost feels like the hardest decision I've had to make since we came here!

For a few moments that seem to stretch like eternity, I say nothing, just focusing on my own thoughts and the comforting rhythm of her steps to calm down my indignation.

"Uh, both seem like good people but, uh, let's go with Evangelyne, if that is all right with you".

"That is acceptable. She seems like an experienced person though at times I question her influence".

"Like how?"

"Do not worry about it, I trust her enough to stay with us".

"Hmmmm".

"What if we all slept together?"

"Lady Maria, we do not have enough beds, and I question whether those of different houses sleeping in one room is even acceptable".

Eriadne's even footfalls falter for a few seconds and she looks at me sideways, gaze unreadable, eyes a curious mix of bright green splotched with gold and grey with a thin pink ring around it. Despite myself, I can't help but be impressed by the combination.

"That… yes, I heard something like that having been custom among… regular people. But still, in this situation…". I'm not sure if all the things she's muttering are meant for me. Ugh, I really shouldn't have confronted her with this right now. The awkwardness is cut short by our arrival at our door, seeing Sora, Evangelyne and the twins already inside. For some reason the first thought is how pleasantly bright it's inside, the gas fire being supported by several wood oil lamps I didn't even know we had.

At seeing the two of us without Helena, the red-eyed girl lunges to her feet, making motions as if to run at us before collapsing in a heap, all strenght in her legs gone.

"Why". It doesn't even sound like a question. Just a tired statement.

"I'm sorry Evangelyne, we really--"

"No. No, it's okay. I'm not blaming either of you. You did what you could, even if *I* didn't. Thank you".

I shuffle into the small space, suddenly feeling tired. Dimly I feel that even Eriadne seems kind of awkward all of a sudden. Hey, if you're losing your cool, what chance do we have?

The next few minutes we spend trying to compare which places we visited with reports of others, the feeling of anxiety and dread radiating from Evangelyne making it hard to concentrate. Just as we're about to call it a night -well, most of us, Evangelyne stil seems intent on continuing- the door opens, a messy little girl stumbling inside.

Before any of us can react, Evangelyne is already by her side, catching her as she falls. Nice reaction time!

"Helena! Speak to me!" Are you sure you should be shaking her like that? Something bright and shiny slips from her grasp, rolling over the carpet floor before Erato picks it up, looking at it quizzically. Huh. From here it looks like a small glass vial with purple water. Wonder what Helena wanted with it.

"Heaaavv aaaaachee". The slurred words from the small priestess make Evangelyne jump.

"Where are you hurt? Do you need a healer?"

"Hfeal fwaast. Mwy gift. Ofwnly here." She points to her head. After a quick but very thorough examination of the small girl's body, Evanglyne nods.

"She's probably not physically hurt, a few scratches here and there aside, but it seems her powers are completely blocked. Helena, where is your Sigil? Your neck? Okay". Evangelyne takes out a dark flask from a pocket, holding it up and looking at it speculatively.

"Girls, take out the lights please. All I want is a single candle". Everyone obeys in a hurry, even Eriadne who lights a spare candle on the gas and puts it in front of the other girl.

"Helena, I want you to drink this, okay?"

"-kay. Ugh! What's that?!" Whatever was in there seems to have tasted foul enough to bring Helena at least partially back to her senses. Impressive.

"Wine. Dreamwine to be precise. Keep drinking, it'll help you relax. I don't know how your awakening went wrong, but you'll only get worse if we don't fix this first. Magic is part of a Witch. If one part is sick, all other parts suffer".

Why do I feel like she's lecturing to calm herself,now?

Despite the dim candle light I can see Helena's disgusted expression, but she dutifully swallows till Evangelyne is satisfied. The older girl sits down properly, legs crossed and pulls Helena into her lap.

"Now, I want you to sit. Look at the candle over there. It's okay to lean against me, just keep looking at the candle. Imagine how warm it feels. Feel it spread through your body like the sun. Imagine how every part of you becomes warm, and heavy, and full of strenght. This is how the first Witch felt when the Goddess spoke to her. Magic, Helena. It's warm like the sun, strong like fire, immovable like the mountains. Can you feel it?" A sleepy nod. It seems Helena is completely focused on the flame and Evangelyne's words. I can feel myself grow a little sleepy myself, the low, comforting words pulling me in.

"See yourself walking down steps. They lead to a warm, safe cave. Imagine counting them. Let's count them together. One… two… three… at the end of the stairway you'll see a fire. You'll be happy because that fire is your strenght… four… feel yourself grow closer and closer to it…"

A wind seems to be blowing through the room, making the candle flicker and distracting me from her words as I see the flow of power behind it. It seems all around us, shimmering and pulsing, circling around the two girls in eddies and waves. Yikes, now I missed what more she said. And it was just getting interesting.

"--embrace it. Let it free. Let if flow and make it yours". A pulse washes throughout the room, like the beating of an unseen heart. Everyone else seems to have felt it as well, the twins shooting up from their sitting places looking around in what must be shock, judging from the way they move.

"She'll be fine". Evangelyne's voice sounds tired, and she doesn't stand up, Helena having fallen asleep on her lap.

Erato walks over and blows out the candle, then the room falls silent. …is Helena snoring?

Absently, I wonder why I'm still sitting on Eriadne's bed, but I'm way too tired to still care.A. I can feel my thoughts slow down as the day takes its toll, all the experiences and people blurring together as my mind slowly fades into the land of dream.

And that night, Maria went to bed hungry.
