Pretty late, heh. Good thing not much'll be happening this thread.

- - - - - -

Captain Amarilis Becker isn't very striking. She looks plain; blonde hair cut down right to regulation, a forgettable face, and an average woman's body. She looks nothing like a top ONI operative in command of a top secret and cutting edge prowler on a mission far behind enemy lines. She wouldn't look out of place as a school teacher.

There is one thing about her though. She stands there, perfect regulation stance, and she exhudes an aura of an officer. Even if she looks plain, you have a feeling deep in your gut that tells you this woman is not to be fucked with.

She breaks that feeling with a smile, and says "Welcome to the Fire Will Come, Corporal Churchill. Welcome to your new home."

How do you respond?

"Thank you, ma'am," you reply.
Captain Becker waits for you to continue, and when you don't she laughs quietly. "We'll beat it out of you eventually." Before you can ask what the hell does she mean by that, she continues. "I do believe you've had somewhat of a tough time down on the surface, but you don't need to worry up here. We're fully stealthed and av-cammed, and as soon as we're out of the gravity well of Reach we're jumping out of system, following the Cole Protocol. Should only be half an hour until then. So relax, you're safe in here."
You let out a sigh, swapping your helmet to your other hand. "Sorry about that, ma'am. It's still a little hard to believe."
"Don't worry about it, Corporal. Now, before we do anything else, let me introduce the bridge officers."

She indicates the three personnel sitting at their stations in the bridge, who have all turned to face you when the captain mentioned introductions.
"At the weapons station on the right, we have Lieutenant Commander Louis Bradley," she indicates an older man with greying black hair, who looks about as old as your father.
"At navigation up front is Lieutenant Carloman Beck." A younger man, with brown hair and a strong jawline. He nods at you.
"Finally, at operations, we have Lexa Duncan. Say hi, Lexa." A dark haired woman with glasses waves at you feebly. You just nod.
"Crew, this is Corporal Daniel Churchill, one of our ground operatives. He's come back from doing some very good work down on the surface. Without him, our mission would probably have been scrapped."
You exchange greetings and nods with the bridge crew, before they go back to their jobs. You are, of course, still on a fully functioning warship.

"Well, that's the bridge, corporal. Follow me." Becker leads you to the corridor just outside the bridge. "I'm not needed for any of the slipspace preparations right now, so I've got some time with you. You want to get the debriefing done first, or would you rather have a tour of the ship?"

"Can you take me to the medbay, first? I want to see how many of my squadmates are still up and about."
"Alright," Becker replies. "It's this way."
She leads you through the bulkheads and cramped corridors to the medical bay. It's a depressing sight inside as you see most of your squad in beds. The only people standing are the medical personnel, Moana and Penny.

"Officer on deck," says one of the corpsmen, who nods at Captain Becker then returns to bandaging your heavy weapons specialist. Moana and Penny turn and give their salutes, and beside them Erika tries to sit up to do the same.
"Easy, trooper," Becker says. "Wounded don't need to salute."
Kendrick stops with his uninjured arm halfway to his head, with a confused look on his face. Becker catches this and chuckles. "Alright, go ahead."
Kendrick finishes the salute, and Becker returns it.

It's here you notice some people are missing. Jacobson and Matilda are nowhere to be found. You ask Moana about them.
"Jacobson is in the OR, getting his skull fixed. Matilda declined medical attention, saying she had to go and tend to her armour."
Becker sighs. "Don't worry about her," she says. "She'll get the medical attention. She just gets... moody after a fight."

"Well, anyway, Corporal Churchill here wanted to come see who's still on their feet. I'm gonna give him a tour of the ship."
"Count me out," says Moana. "No disrespect, ma'am, but I'm wiped. I'll just head to the quarters and sleep."
"I'll take you," says the corpsman tending to Kendrick. "I've just finished here, I'll show you where to go."
"Thanks," says Moana. The pair walked out.

This left Penny as the only one still walking.
"Ah fuck it, I've seen the ship back to front already, but I'll come with you."

"Actually, could we get some of the debriefing done here?" you ask. "While these two are still awake," you gesture at Levern and Erika.
"Well, I guess so," says the captain. "Won't be a formal debriefing, but It's good to get it done as a group."

So you spend the next twenty minutes recounting, as Captain Becker gets it all down on a tablet. The ship transitioning to slipspace isn't enough to interrupt it, and when you finally finish you almost feel good. It feels good to get everything straight and ordered, make your memories line up and make sense.
"It sounds like you guys went through a real shitheap on the surface," says Becker. "That's... It's a hell of a thing, Reach falling. Reach was our stronghold. I wonder how long this war will go."

It's in this pause that you realise you could ask some questions.

[URGE TO KNOW MORE INTENSIFIES]
>>
Welp, time for WALL OF TEXT
>>
"So what's the deal with Captain Rowland, then?" you ask. "Why'd he pull that shit?"
Becker sighs at this. "You heard the name of that Major General, right? MacNiel? Him and the Read Admiral go back. It's a long lasting enmity that's lasted since before the war, back when insurrectionists were a thing.
"Our good Admiral, Paul MacKenzie, was once dismissed for having ties to the insurrection, after one Marine Captain caught the then Lieutenant 'consorting with the enemy' while on lead. It turned out that MacKenzie had been having an affair with an innie spy. He never knew, but he never leaked either.
"After a lengthy process, the spy was convicted, MacKenzie was reinstated into the Navy, and a lot of people were very angry. MacNiel most of all. MacNiel's been messing with MacKenzie ever since, and he hasn't caught shit for it since he has friends in even higher places than him. If it weren't for the Admiral being buddies with Parangosky, he wouldn't be in the navy."

"That's pretty fucked up," says Kendrick. "And Captain Rowland was in on all this?"
"Captain Rowland has been loyal to MacNiel since forever," replies Becker. "It's really no surprise. The lengths they've been going at here on Reach... I mean, the whole planet was in chaos, but did they really think they could get away with it? It's one hell of a move and I'm not sure what the ramifications are gonna be. Good thing we'll be far away from all that shit."

You then remember something that happened in New Alexandria.
"How does the chain of command apply to Matilda?" you ask. "We had a face off back in New Alexandria, and Penny mentioned something about Matilda needing to listen to the groundies? What's that about?"

"Ah, well, it's good that we clear that up," says Becker. "Matilda has some trouble working as a team. She's a Spartan, of course, but her training involved a lot of independent ops. When she got put into duty, the few ops she did with other marines had her sending them off as cannon fodder or distractions while she did the important things. None of those marines ever made it back alive.
"It's taken us a while, but we've finally trained her to work with the marines, rather than independently of them. This is the first mission where she's done so, and from your reports, she seems to have done well so far."

"As for the chain of command, well. Honestly, right now, Sergeant Jacobson should be in charge. Due to his injuries, though, I think it might be a while before he can get back to active duty." She turns to you. "You, however. You've shown some initiative far above your station, Churchill. With Jacobson out of the fight, and Matilda unable to lead... well, Churchill, what do you say to accepting the mantle of responsibility for the squad? I think you'd make a good sergeant."

That... came out of nowhere. You can see where she's coming from, but you expected to have a little bit more experience before you made sergeant. You were surprised when you made corporal after Fumirole, this is pretty much the same situation.
But you weren't about to turn down something like this.

"I accept the responsibility," you say. "I don't really have anything else to say, apart from thank you."
"Congratulations, sergeant," says Becker. She taps a few things on her screen, and your helmet makes a double beep. "There, it's official. Next time we link up with the battlenet, it'll get uploaded onto the global network. We'll see if we can dig up some chevrons in the mean time."
"Thanks, really," you say. Kendrick starts clapping, and the others join in.

"Anyway, moving on from that," you say. "What happens now? What happens to our mission, now that Reach has fallen?"
"Short answer? Nothing," says Becker. "Long answer? Absolutely nothing. Ours is but a long range recon mission. We go to these worlds far behind the lines, snoop around a bit, see if there are any survivors, and then move on. The most likely situation is that we find completely dead balls of glass, and then we move on to the next dead ball of glass.
"The big variable here is survivors. What happens if we find them? Unfortunately, we'll be completely out of contact with the UNSC for the duration of our mission. Earth could fall while we're out there and we would never know. So we'll have to play a lot of it by ear. We cross bridges when we get to them, and we don't start worrying about them before then."

"So, is that all your questions answered? You still up for that tour, or should I just show you to your quarters?"

"I can still go for that tour," you say.
"Okay," says Becker. "Penny, you coming with us?"
"Nothing better to do," says Penny.
You nod at Kendrick and Erika as you leave. You'll visit them later.

"Just one more question," you say as you walk out. "Just how long can we last out there, off the grid in the depths of space?"
Becker turns back to you and grins. "In a word: years. This is a ship like you've never seen in your life."

- - - - -

And I'll end it here. Next thread we'll get the tour done, and that'll be the last ODSTq in a while. I'm heading down to Adelaide for a couple weeks in the second half of September. In addition to that, I've been planning to run a different quest after I've finished this arc of ODSTq, and then get back to ODSTq after that, swapping between them arc by arc. We'll see how it goes, eh? I've really been looking forward to running this other quest.

"In a word: years. This is a ship like you've never seen in your life."

Don't tell me, we'll be out so long that we'll miss all the events in Halo 2 and 3 and have to deal with Post War stuff, huh?

Well, it'll be interesting none the less
>>
>>34525802
Thanks for the thread FF, looking forward to the next and whatever this other quest idea of yours is, running them arc by arc, switching between them sounds interesting
>>
>>34525857
I thought it was a better idea than running them both at the same time.

It's a long time before I sleep, so if anyone wants to ask anything regarding new quest or ODSTq you can do so now if you want.
>>
>>34525897
ok, so

Will we have access to all the weapons throughout the Halo games?

How long do you intend to run the game in-universe? From what dates in 2552 to some future date?

Will we miss events in Halo 2 and Halo3/ODST?
>>
>>34525931
Yes

Yes

Probably

2nd question would be a spoiler if I knew the answer to it. I can't say exactly where the story will go, but it'll probably end when the war does. That's the best answer I can give at the moment.
>>
>>34525897
>ask anything regarding new quest
whats it about/its premise?
>>
>>34525974
Well there are a few more months left in the war. Reach fell in September of 2552, right? And then the war ended around January or something of 2553?

In any case, that might give us a rather short time frame in story.

Say, will we be seeing locals with Insurrectionists?
>>
>>34526022
the official end of hostilities was March 3rd, 2553, but there was still fighting and skirmishes long after with splinter and remnant forces of the covenant, they didn't all just stop immediately and the situation behind the covenant lines was very different to that in Sol
>>
>>34525992
Title of Tank Hunters Quest (Or Wasteland Tanks Quest, I'm still flipping between those two like a moth stuck between two porch lights). The apocalypse has come and gone, the world order has collapsed in a great world war, leaving Europe mostly barren and covered in the scars of war. It's been long enough, though, that new nations have taken up the reigns.

The wastelands are full of mercenaries driving tanks, relics of the war. You want to be one. You've got the tank, you need the crew and you need the jobs.

Basically it's like a combination of Zoids: Chaotic Century, Mechwarrior Mercs, but with tanks.

>>34526022
I can assume that the mission might continue after the war.
>>
>>34526097
Sounds fucking sweet
>>
>>34526097
Will the tanks be modern tanks, or will they involve old timey tanks?

Also, would it be spoilers to say if we'll be meeting Innies in ODST quest?
>>
>>34526164
Cold war era mostly. From after WW2 all the way up to the modern day (but the modern day ones will be boss tanks and super tank style things)
>>
>>34526415
Will we ever get to drive modern tanks or will they just be there to play the boss role?

As for ODST quest, I'm wondering about the soundness of the given mission.

While it is an interesting premise, to go out behind the lines to do recon and rescue, the fact that we're gone so long without support seems kind of risky. Too risky. I mean, I think Grey team was given a mission sort of like this, just more of trying to take out Covvie locals and whatnot, but that was 3 Spartan IIs. We only got the one III, who are generally far more expendable. Though, as you've said, the ship is nothing like we've ever seen, but considering the dire state that the UNSC is in after the Fall of Reach, you'd think they'd try and pull every resource they have into stopping the Covenant advance towards Earth.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I like the premise and I really want to see where this quest goes. It's just that the logic of it, as far as i know, doesn't seem as solid as it could be.
>>
>>34526523
>While it is an interesting premise, to go out behind the lines to do recon and rescue, the fact that we're gone so long without support seems kind of risky.
Such CSAR and deep penetration black ops hhve been a pretty standard affair in the last 40-60 years of modern warfare
>>
>>34526586
But would it be reasonable to expend such resources on search and rescue when you're on the losing end of the war? I mean, Earth's losing pretty badly.
>>
anyways, good night
>>
>>34526523
You may be able to drive a modern tank at some point in the quest
