This gets you a chuckle from Sayaka and Karasuba, though Karasuba’s is less humor and more one of mild disbelief.

Then the two of you go to the center of the dojo and for the first time, against someone other than Karasuba, you begin to spar.

At first Sayaka starts out with just one blade, a dull one for once, and the two of you go at it.

The first bout is probably the best one for both of you overall. It lasts for several minutes, the both of you attempting and then failing, for the most part, to hit your opponent. You get a feel for her style of combat, which is slightly different than yours or Karasuba’s, and you think she gets quite a good feel for yours as well.

In the end it comes down to what basically amounts to chance, with your blade impacting low and on Sayaka’s side, a wound sure, but not a fatal one, and hers impacting in the center of your chest. Karasuba, being the judge for the match, calls it in Sayaka’s favor.

As the next match starts, Sayaka brings out a second blade. This turns out to be much in her favor, as it takes her a relatively short time to overwhelm you with the paired combination. The only other multi-limbed/armed opponent you’ve faced by yourself was Kaede’s puke monster, which was a dumb animal all things considered. The other one you had help with so you really didn’t have to watch all that closely.

It ends as Sayaka manages to get both of her blades against your sides in an upward sweeping motion, which would probably have taken you out of a real fight completely, if not killed you.

For the final spar, things go more your way, as Sayaka tries what is more or less the same combination of moves against you using both blades. Having seen the moves before, you press through with a relative ease, overwhelming her swirling blades with blunt directness. This time it’s your blade against her stomach, which would’ve ended up through her spine.

As the two of break from the final bout, both of you are sweating profusely, but Sayaka has a grin on her face.

“That was fun,” she says, shaking your hand, “I haven’t had a good spar like that in a while, we should do it again sometime.”

“Sure,” you say to her, “next time I’ll get you though.”

“We’ll see,” she says with a smile, then begins to pack up her stuff.

I have real fencing experience i can say this footwork is key to all fighting and the drills for sword fighting have some carry over to fist fighting If i were guide i would add a our sword fighting to our hand to hand without even an improvised baton but at a penalty of say 1-2 levels to represent that imperfect carryover. You’re momentarily distracted as you focus on how smooth Karasuba’s skin is.
